Oyo lawmaker alleges armed herdsmen have taken over Ogunmakin

A member of the House of Representatives, Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, has raised the alarm that armed herdsmen have invaded Ogunmakin, Gambari Reserve and surrounding communities within the Oluyole Federal Constituency, Oyo State.

The lawmaker alleged that herdsmen have been destroying farm produce, intimidating local farmers, and using weapons such as guns and cutlasses to instil fear in residents of Ogunmakin.

She noted that this has jeopardised the livelihoods of farmers, exacerbating the economic crises and food insecurity of the region.

Akande-Sadipe, who represents Oluyole Federal Constituency, said she raised this concern in a matter of Urgent Public Importance in a Motion on the need to avert further loss of lives, humanitarian and food security crisis as a result of invasion of farmlands by armed herdsmen in Oluyole Federal constituency on the floor of the House earlier in the week.

She called on relevant arms of the Federal government and security agencies to intervene before the people are completely wiped out from their ancestral homes.

Akande-Sadipe, who chairs the House committee on Humanitarian Services, further accused the armed herdsmen of “a deliberate agenda to destroy farm produce, intimidate local farmers, and using weapons such as guns and cutlasses to instil fear, thereby jeopardizing the livelihoods of farmers, exacerbating the economic crises and food insecurity of the region.”

She further noted that despite multiple reports to law enforcement agencies, no decisive action has been taken to address the situation, leaving farmers vulnerable and unprotected.

“The failure to act swiftly has emboldened the perpetrators, leading to increased attacks, destruction of crops, and threats to lives and property, with the risk of further escalation if immediate action is not taken”, she added.

Akande-Sadipe asked the House to call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to: Provide immediate relief materials and support to affected farmers and communities to mitigate the impact of the crisis on their livelihoods, enable them to recover from losses incurred, and resume agricultural activities.

  • Rep Olatoye’s murder: Monarch exonerates Oyo lawmaker

THE traditional ruler of Lalupon, Ibadan in Lagelu Local Government Area, Oyo State, Oba Muniru Adekunle, has exonerated the Chief Whip of the state House of Assembly, Olafisoye Akinmoyede, who is being held over the killing of the member of the House of Representatives representing Lagelu/Akinyele Federal Constituency, Temitope Olatoye, (a.k.a. Sugar).

Olatoye was killed by yet-to-be identified gunmen during the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Akinmoyede, who contested for the Lagelu State Constituency for the second time under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost to the rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is being detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, in connection with the incident.

The monarch, while speaking with reporters in Ibadan yesterday, described the lawmaker as a man of peace, saying he had contributed immensely to the development of Lalupon town and the local government area through his philanthropic activities.

Although he admitted that both Akinmoyede and the late Olatoye belonged to different political parties, Oba Adekunle described them as “brothers and best of friends”, saying they had jointly and individually committed enormous resources to the socio-economic wellbeing of the people of the area.

“I have always known Sugar and Akinmoyede as not only brothers but also best of friends. It is, therefore, inconceivable that one would want to terminate the other’s life for whatever reason.

“As the traditional ruler of Lalupon town, where Akinmoyede hails from, I know him to be a man of peace. He does not encourage thuggery and violence. I’m sure he didn’t know anything about the incident,” he said.

The monarch added that the fact that the legislator voluntarily responded to the police invitation by walking to the State Criminal Investigation Bureau (SCIB), Iyaganku in Ibadan as well as the testimonies of most of his subjects on Akinmoyede’s characters were enough evidence that he was innocent,” the monarch said.

Although Oba Adekunle hailed the police for the job they have done so far concerning the killing, he urged them to further intensify their efforts to find the real killers with a view to bringing them to book.

He commiserated with the Olatoye family over the untimely death of the lawmaker, describing it as unfortunate and disheartening.

The royal father said the late lawmaker would be sorely missed as a good ambassador of his constituents and for his unprecedented philanthropy, which had endeared him to his people.

Among the properties destroyed was the palace of the traditional rulers.

  • Oyo lawmaker to police: I’m innocent of Sugar’s killing

Oyo State House of Assembly Chief Whip Olafisoye Akinmoyede has exonerated himself from the killing of a member of the House of Representatives, Temitope Olatoye.

He said he knew nothing about the incident.

Olatoye, popularly known as Sugar, was killed by yet to be identified gunmen during the March 9 Governorship and House of Assembly elections at Lalupon Area of Lagelu Local Government.

Akinmoyede, who contested for the Lagelu State Constituency seat for the second time on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but lost to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has since been in detention at the State Criminal Investigations Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan in connection with the incident.

The legislator, in a statement issued yesterday by his media assistant, Mr. Segun Olawale, said he was not, in any way, connected with the death of Olatoye.

“Although both of us are from rival political parties, ‘Sugar’ was my friend, brother and long- time political ally. We were together in APC for a very long time before he defected to the African Democratic Party (ADP) under whose platform he contested for the Oyo South Senatorial election.

“I am a man of peace. This can be attested to by my political associates, colleagues in the House of Assembly and indeed, the people of my constituency. The fact that Sugar and I are not from the same party does not mean we should be at each other’s throat.

“Incidentally, we did not contest for the same political office. While he contested for the Oyo South Senatorial seat, I contested for the Lagelu State Constituency seat for the second term,” he said.

Akinmoyede said on receiving a call from the Police Command headquarters at Eleyele, Ibadan that his attention was needed in connection with Sugar’s death, he honoured the invitation by going to the police command, since he knew he was innocent.

He said the unfortunate killing of Olatoye did not happen at his polling unit, Ward 7, Isale Osun, where he had earlier cast his vote, adding that there was no crisis while the voting lasted until the arrival of the federal lawmaker in Lalupon town from his Alape village with his “boys”, which resulted in the electorate scampering for safety.

According to him, it was not long after that he heard that gunshots were being exchanged between Olatoye’s “boys” and some people at the Lalupon motor park, which resulted in his being shot.

“I am, therefore, surprised by the reports in a section of the media that I was arrested by the police. I must state emphatically that I was never arrested. I reported myself to the police voluntarily upon receiving their call,” the lawmaker said.

Akinmoyede, a former chairman of Lagelu Local Government, urged the police to carry out investigations to fish out the killers.

  • Oyo lawmaker escape assassination

A serving member of the House of Representatives from Oyo State, representing Ibadan North West/Southwest of Oyo State, Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, has said he narrowly escaped assassination attempt. He said he owes his being alive to the quick intervention of men of the Special Joint Task Force Team of the Oyo State Government, codenamed ‘Operation Burst’, who rescued him from the hoodlums and suspected assassins before they could carry out their plans.

“Early hours on January 6, 2019, I was coming from a meeting around 12:30 when some hoodlums suddenly blocked me with two branded vehicles at Sabo area of Ibadan. About 10 men with guns and cutlasses alighted and ordered me into a gutter. When I was there, I tried and called my father. They were threatening to kill me. I saw and recognized all of them. I saw my opponent in the forthcoming election who is contesting the same seat and others among the hoodlums.

“Fortunately for me, when my dad came, they were struggling with him. After then, the Operation Burst men who were just on their own routine patrol came and rescued me.  When the hoodlums saw the security men approaching, they ran away but one of them (the driver) was arrested. When their vehicles were searched, they saw loaded guns and cutlasses in the branded vehicle. The vehicle is with the policemen now. You can go there to verify,” he claimed.

Ajanaku was subsequently invited and quizzed at the state criminal investigation department in alongside the arrested driver, but later released in the evening. When contacted, Ajanaku, a former member of the APC who defected to the Zenith Labour Party and contesting the same seat with Fijabi, described the allegations as false claiming that it was Fijabi who ordered his boys to destroy every campaign billboards belonging to the ZLP.

He wondered why someone of the caliber of a federal lawmaker would condescend so low to lying about what never happened, challenging him to tell the world if he ever sustained any kind of injury or wound, despite his claims of been harassed. Responding, the state police command through its spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, Adekunle Ajisebutu confirmed that the “case is under investigation at the State CID.”

Oyo lawmaker clears air on court judgement

The lawmaker representing Oluyole Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abuja, Samson Olusunbo Olugbemi has described the rumour of his removal from the Green Chamber by the Supreme Court as wicked, malicious and a figment of the imagination of some unscrupulous politicians.
Reacting to the recent pronouncement of the Supreme Court on his 2015 electoral victory which generated some ripples within his constituency, the federal lawmaker, described the misinterpretation of the court statement as a futile attempt by some disgruntled elements to mislead unsuspecting members of the public.
“For the avoidance of doubt, what the Apex Court did last week was to clear the air on a pre-hearing matter which had to do with the jurisdiction of the High Court over the case instituted by the loser of the APC party primary held in build up to the March 28, 2015 election. The substantive suit is still in the pre-hearing stage at lower court.
“However, the facts remained that I emerged victorious at the keenly contested party primary prior to the general election and the facts supporting this are available for the world to see. In as much as I would not want to join the complainant in seeking self help through the media on a matter which is already before the court of law, it is imperative to set the record straight and correct the misinformation and malicious spread of unfounded rumor on the matter.
“Members of the general public should be informed that I, Hon. Olusunbo Olugbemi, remain the holder of the sacred mandate of the good people of Oluyole Federal Constituency and I remain resolute in my determination to represent my constituent well at the Green Chamber regardless of the all odds.” Olugbemi stated.

  • Lagos lawmaker urges police to arrest Oyo lawmaker’s killers

A MEMBER of Lagos State House of Assembly, Segun Olulade, has urged the Police to investigate the gruesome murder of a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu, to bring the culprits to book.

Olulade, who represents Epe Constituency 2 in a statement issued yesterday, expressed outrage at the murder of the lawmaker, who represented Orelope Constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly.

According to him, the murder of late Aremu would send a wrong signal to the local and international community about the state of security in the country. “If a lawmaker can be gruesomely murdered with ease, then how safe are the people who are not politicians?

“The police and other security agencies must intensify their crime prevention and detection activities. If police can foil assassination attempts and unravel cases of murder within reasonable time, it will serve as disincentive and deterrent to those who perpetrate evil deeds.

“The security agencies must quickly move against the killers of late Aremu and others who may be behind this gruesome killing before they have the opportunity to cover their tracks. I want to also appeal to the people to help the police in their investigation,” the statement reads.

Olulade commiserated with the family of the deceased, the Oyo State House of Assembly and the Oyo State Government. He prayed that God should grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
