    Patience goes home with grace

Governor Umo Eno is in mourning for his departed wife and partner for decades. When the Akwa Ibom State Governor remarked that she had all the virtues in a wife, no one can confirm that more than 22-year-old Grace Emmanuel. Emmanuel bombed twitter with the pathos of her story. She is a mother of four pushed to the limit by her destitution. She was employed but not gainfully. So, she was feeding her children with chicken and fish feeds in the poultry farm where she was a staff. She was actually stealing them in an act of desperation.

Patience Eno heard of the story and she was moved. She unfurled a N500,000 donation to the young woman. But it was not a cynical gesture for throwing money and looking away. She gave her a furnished accommodation with kitchen utensils, and food supply for at least three months. The girl was earning 15 thousand naira a month in her work place, but the First Lady supplemented it with N20,000.

She had a psychological grasp of Miss Emmanuel’s condition.  A mother unsupported by the children’s father. A lone at that age to care for family.

Hear Patience Eno’s words: “We are mindful that this is a girl that is still a child, doesn’t have a bank account, no phone. You don’t raise money and give to her in bulk. She is already vulnerable. So, anything you give her that could make her live flamboyantly, she is going to fall prey. People will come under the guise of love and deceive her,” she added.

She said she should go through counselling, and if she was ripe for proper work, she would get proper training. That was the last public testament of Patience Eno. She goes home with a halo of compassion and humanity, a halo of grace.

“Her Excellency was not just a compassionate First Lady, but a mother extraordinary.

“Your Excellency, as a Pentecostal Preacher and father of faith in your own right, we need not remind you of the scriptures in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 which says, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed. We are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed”

He then prayed that the soul of the deceased will find peace with the Lord and strength for the governor to continue in ministry and to pursue the state functions entrusted into his hands.

  • Winning your unbelieving spouse to Christ (4)

Dear Reader, I am sure that you have been receiving some helpful truths on how to get your spouse saved.  Continuous practice of what you have received will further guarantee a quick testimony for you in Jesus’ name! This week, I will be teaching on one virtue that is very helpful in getting your spouse saved.  It is one virtue that looks so insignificant that many believers find very hard to use.  This virtue is PATIENCE.

Patience, is the human ability to accept delay, annoyance or suffering without complaining. It is also the ability to keep doing something that requires a lot of effort. Patience is a must when it comes to the salvation of your spouse. Many who are faced with the challenges of being married to their unsaved spouses always seek quick ways of quitting the marriage. Rather than staying in it to work out these challenges, they opt for ways to put an end to the marriage. If this is the situation with you, I would like you to know that this is not the solution.

Praying, fasting and living a Christian life that speaks will demand your patience, as your unsaved spouse may try to frustrate your efforts by constantly doing those things that may upset you and is against your Christian faith. Your unsaved spouse’s contrary actions to what you are praying for, is not of his or her will. Remember, he or she has not seen the light and can be considered one that has been blinded and is still under the influence of the prince of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4). Patience, while praying, fasting and living a life that speaks is needful when an instant miracle does not happen the way you expect it to. Hebrews 10:35-39 says: Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.  For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.  Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.  But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

Remember, that when you too were unsaved, you might have done worse things in foolishness, but God still found joy in accepting you as His child. He forgave you and redeemed you so that you could do the same, especially towards your unsaved spouse. It may take some time for him or her to come around to accepting Jesus with you, but patience will help you not to give up just too quickly. Your faith will be tried as written in James 1:3-4 which says: Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.  But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. But when patience is in place, you will always find yourself strengthened instead of fainting at such times. Learn to exercise more patience with your spouse who is an unbeliever. Do not see him or her as the person responsible for all those negative actions, rather see the devil as the sole culprit and address the situation that way when you are before the Lord.

Instead of talking back, nagging, shouting, insulting or giving in all together, remember, that it is the voice of the devil that is controlling your spouse and not your spouse. When you see it this way, you will seek ways to protect your unsaved spouse and direct your anger back at the devil accordingly.  Also, you meditate on all the testimonies that you have read so far, which had the working of patience attached to them.  The people involved, carefully and patiently acted on the Word of God that they had received.

Here is another testimony that will further build your faith: “I give thanks to God for quelling the war in my home between my husband and I.  I kept praying for God to touch my husband’s heart, so that we could both be attending church services together.  I remembered God’s Word; I believed it and kept appropriating it to myself. On Tuesday, when another fight was to start, I left the house for my mother’s house. On returning home in the evening, my husband said he wanted to talk to me.  He said he wanted to give his life to Christ.  This morning, to the glory of God, my husband is here in church with me.”

I tell you once again, there is nothing that is too much for God to do.  But for Him to fulfill His part, you have to fulfill your part effectively. Can you imagine a situation whereby you could have led your spouse patiently unto salvation, you opted to walk out on your marriage and much later by some other miraculous means your spouse becomes a believer! You may also just be the vessel God wants to use to get the message of salvation across to him or her. You will not fail in Jesus’ name!  You will make it! So, don’t give up!

The act of being patient can only be easy when God becomes your stronghold. It is quite impossible to be patient by your own power and might.  Zechariah 4:6 says: …Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.  God’s Word in Colossians 1:11 also says: Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness. Holding unto Him will give you an access to that power.  However, if you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, you too can do so, and become a child of God. If you are not born again and you want to accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour, then say this prayer in faith: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

With this, you are guaranteed all-round rest and peace in Jesus’ Name! Call or write to share your testimonies with me through contact@faithoyedepo.org, 07026385437 OR 08141320204.

  • Minimum wage: There’s limit to our patience, says Wabba

Minimum wage: There’s limit to our patience, says Wabba

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, said the  understanding being exhibited by  workers on the minimum wage issue should not be taken for granted.

In an interview with The Nation, he said: “There’s limit to the patience and understanding the workers can have on the issue of minimum wage,” warning that labour might be forced to react if the issue was not urgently addressed.

He said: “It is good for workers to express their fears on the issue of minimum wage, but it’s also good for leaders to be up and doing. For us in Organised Labour, it is an issue that we think that is long overdue and we have gotten commitment from all levels, including the National Assembly that this sue is addressed once and for all.

“You can even see that in the last one month, an action has been taken, the Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila proposed a bill to the effect that the issue of the review of minimum wage should be a provision of the law, because you are aware that in 2011, what we had was a tripartite agreement that after five years, the minimum wage will be reviewed.

“But they have even gone one step further by saying that it should not only end up in the tripartite agreement, it should be a product of law. And I think that all of them in the National Assembly, whom we have interfaced with, are ready to do the needful, including if there is supplementary budget today, that they are ready to give it accelerated hearing.

“Therefore, those fears are real, but we are working assiduously from our perspective to ensure that those issues are addressed.  It is an issue that you need to bring to the attention of the governors, employers, government and Organised Labour. And you know businesses are for profits and anything that will take a dime out of their profits, they are ready to do everything possible to delay it. We are mindful of that. It’s not the first time we are treading this path, you remember in 2010, it was also the same process.

“But I think when the die is cast, all of us will then know that certainly, when the workers are pushed to the wall, there is a limit to patience and understanding. Certainly, a hungry person, however you explain to him, there is no basis how he will understand. So, we are looking at reality.”

Wabba said it was clear that N18,000 in the context of the economic reality could not take anyone for a week.

“ I assure you that we, on this side, will play our role very importantly so that we take into consideration some of the issues that our members have brought to our attention. But I think the important thing is that the process must start and we must see to the fact that this process must have a time-line where we can end it. We shouldn’t allow those workers to die first before the fruit of their labour will manifest,” he said.

On child labour , Wabba said there is a tripartite committee working to review the law, adding that the Nigeria law is not consistent with the ILO convention on child labour.

“There is the need to get that law reviewed because you can’t work outside the law, especially when it is a convention.

“And, especially the age that is being referred to as a child, our old law back at home is not actually consistent with the ILO convention. But as I speak with you, I think we are through with that law.

‘’We are working assiduously with the National Assembly. They are supposed to have had a public hearing on that law but because of the fact that at the last ILC meeting, we agreed that the law should be recovered from the NASS, the tripod should do a review and then send it back to the National Assembly for enactment. So, progress has been made,” Wabba said.

  • Court orders forfeiture of Patience Jonathan’s $5.8m, N2.4b

Court orders forfeiture of Patience Jonathan’s $5.8m, N2.4b

THE Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday ordered the temporary forfeiture of $5,842,316.66 belonging to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience.

Justice Mojisola Olatoregun made the order based on an ex-parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The commission said it found the money in an account numbered 2110001712 with Skye Bank Plc in Mrs. Jonathan’s name.

The judge also ordered the forfeiture of N2,421,953,522.78 found in an Ecobank Nigeria Ltd account numbered 2022000760 in the name of La Wari Furniture and Baths Ltd.

EFCC said the funds were “reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities”.

Justice Olatoregun directed the EFCC to publish the interim order in a national newspaper.

It is for the respondents or anyone interested in the funds to be forfeited to appear before the court within 14 days to “show cause” as to why a final order of forfeiture should not be made in favour of the Federal Government.

EFCC’s counsel Rotimi Oyedepo said the application was based on Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related Offences Act 2006.

In an affidavit in support of the ex parte originating summons, an EFCC operative, Musbahu Yahaya Abubakar, said he was a member of a Special Task Force Team assigned to investigate the case.

He said the commission received an intelligence report that funds suspected to be proceeds of crime were “warehoused” in the accounts.

“The intelligence was analysed and found worthy of investigation,” Abubakar said.

He said Mrs. Jonathan opened the Skye Bank account on February 7, 2013.

“Upon the opening of the account, several huge cash deposits in dollars were made to the account.

“One Dudafa Waripamo Owei, who was the Senior Special Assistant to the former President was one of the frequent depositors in the account.

“Another frequent cash depositor of funds reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities into the account is one Festus Iyoha, a steward at the State House, Abuja,” the deponent said.

The EFCC investigator said Iyoha also made deposits with fictitious names.

Abubakar said between February 8, 2013 and January 30, 2015, $6,791,599.64 suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities was deposited into the account in cash.

He said Mrs. Jonathan had dissipated part of the funds, leaving a balance of $5,731,173.55.

“If this fund is not forfeited in the interim, the operator of the account, Mrs. Dame Patience Jonathan, will fully dissipate it.

“She made cash withdrawal of $100,000 on April 7, 2017 from the account after obtaining court order in suit No FHC/L/CS/1343/16 on the ground that she was not made a party to the suit,” the investigator said.

On the N2.4 billion, the operative said the commission also traced the money to the Ecobank account following suspicions that it was a proceed of crime.

He said the “purported” signatory to the account was Ada Ifegbu, with a telephone number belonging to Esther Oba.

The EFCC operative said the N2.4 billion “was substantially the naira equivalent of the United States dollars given to one Chima Nwafor John of Ecobank Nigeria Ltd by one Esther Oba at the Aso Rock Villa”.

He said it was John, who contracted bureau de change operators to convert the money to naira and deposit it to La Wari Furniture and Baths Ltd’s account.

Abubakar said the dollars, which were subsequently converted to naira and deposited in the firm’s account were all received in cash by John.

The operative added: “The various deposits by Chima Nwafor John through the bureau de change operators were placed on fixed deposit.

“The sum of N2,033,196,721.31 reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities is currently on fixed deposit in La Wari Furniture’s account.

“Apart from the fixed amount, the sum of N388,751,801.47 reasonably suspected to be proceed of unlawful activities is currently standing to the credit of La Wari Furniture and Baths Ltd’s account.

“It is in the interest of justice to, in the interim, make an order of forfeiture to the Federal Government of Nigeria and allow any person who has interest in the properties sought to be forfeited to appear before this honourable court within 14 days to show cause why the properties reasonably suspected by the applicant to be proceeds of unlawful activities should not be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“It is in the interest of justice to grant this application.”

Ruling, Justice Olatoregun said: “Application is granted as prayed.”

This is coming a day after EFCC withdrew its application for a stay of execution of a judgment which freed the account.

The EFCC frozen the account last year.

Justice Olatoregun on April 6 freed the account after Mrs. Jonathan’s lawyer, Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), had argued that her client was not a party to suit.

Dissatisfied with the order, EFCC filed an application for stay of execution but withdrew it on Monday.

Justice Olatoregun adjourned until May 15.

Daddy Fresh urges patience amid economic recession

A veteran entertainer, Innocent Onyemuwa popularly known as “Daddy Fresh’’, has called on Nigerians to show love, patience and tolerance towards one another in spite of the economic down-turn in the country.

Onyemuwa who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos against the backdrop of the recent release of his latest single entitled, “I love Ya’’ said the prevailing situation in the nation spurred him to release the song.

He said that his song was appealing to people to unite in love so as to be able to weather the storm of recession and for people to shun vices.

“Since things are not moving as people expected in the country, and the economic recession is hitting hard, we need to preach love and patience for one another through our music”.

“I am expressing how I feel about my lady and the country, I know the country is going through hard times; we can still overcome it and be happy.

“The recession is affecting us, also affecting families too, but with love, we will surpass it and be good and happy,’’ he said.

“With good musical lyrics it can calm the nerves, when listened to, to help lift your morals and emotions.

“Music has to lift up peoples’ spirits and talk to them for inner peace, help them relax, not the ones that make noise in their ears.

“Music should to talk to people ahead of time, because musicians are like philosophers, when music talks to one, the person relaxes,’’ he said.

The musician, however, urged Nigerians to anticipate good things, noting that, the country would be better.

He expressed optimism that “I love Ya’’ will be a massive hit, “I expect it to be better than others I have before’’.

On why he had not been consistent with his works, he told NAN that he was not feeling intimidated by the current developments in the entertainment industry.

“No I am not, because, what obtains now in the industry is what I have been doing back then.

“I was dropping songs that were ahead of time which happens to be now, am not intimidated, rather I am back to set up new standards,’’ he said.

He told NAN that his full music album will be released sometime in June, and it will be a 14 track album.

Some of his songs are “Think About,’’ “Maloro,’’ “Oyoyo,’’ “Syncro Dance,’’ “Onion Lover,’’ “Kole Tan,’’ “Take your Bras Off’’ and “Winchy Winchy’’.

NPFL players must have patience to succeed-Lawal

Former  Nigeria international Garba Lawal believes Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) players can make a career breakthrough if they remain focused and have the spirit of patience.

Following the surprise switch of Ezekiel Bassey from Enyimba to Barcelona II in January, the former Super Eagles star insists players can actualise their dreams in Nigeria if they shun fraudulent agents.

“The important thing for most players is that they need to remain focused,” Lawal told Goal.

“I watch the local leagues. Most of the players get carried away by agents. During our time, we did not have agents – maybe that’s why we concentrated playing good football.

“Some of the agents sway them with their sweet mouths and they follow them. As a player, you should know what you want. Let them talk, but you focus on playing what you’ve been playing.

“Don’t leave what you have and start thinking of grabbing what is not possible. Hold on to what you have. If you’re here, you stay and keep trying your best.

“If you keep listening to those agents who promise to take you to this or that country – you will just get yourself distracted for nothing.

“Football is all about time and opportunity. If the time comes, that opportunity you have will make a way for you.

“But if it is yet to come, remain calm. Patience is very difficult but very important and with it, you will succeed.”

    Ganaru calls for NPFL patience

Wikki Tourists technical adviser, Mohammed Baba Ganaru has called for patience and understanding among the side’s teeming supporters in the ongoing top-flight.

“Wikki Tourists are perfectly fine as far as the ongoing 2016-17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is concerned. We may not have churned out the desired results or met the expectations and heights of our teeming supporters.

“However, we know that nothing has gone amiss as things are still under control.

“I know for certain that we will catch up with the front-runners in no distance time.

“Key to achieving the lofty dream is patience and understanding on the part of our fans and supporters.

“We are passionately appealing to them to be calm and supportive as we are determined to meet their expectations. The league is still young to press the alarm button, we want everybody to queue behind the team and all shall be perfectly well,” said the former Kano Pillars and Nasarawa United coach to supersport.com.

Ganaru said his side are ready to claim all three points at stake in the top-flight clash against FC IfeanyiUbah on Sunday in Bauchi.

“We are ready to confront fellow Caf Confederation Cup campaigners, FC IfeanyiUbah.

“Every league match is quite important to us so we are determined to claim the whole three points at stake.

“We will miss the services of Idris Guda Mohammed to injury and Shammah Tanze on greener pasture run, but we have good replacements for them,” said Ganaru.

  • AKWA UTD APOLOGISE TO FANS, ASK FOR PATIENCE, SUPPORT

AKWA UTD APOLOGISE TO FANS, ASK FOR PATIENCE, SUPPORT

The management and players of Akwa United have apologized to those they refer to as “genuine fans and supporters” for their current poor run in the four-week old Premier league.

A release by the club media officer Mr.Mfon Patrick yesterday quoted the club Chairman Mr. Paul Bassey as saying that the current poor run of the team is regretted and that despite the “……strong conviction that this may turn out to be our best year in the league we are trying not to misplace the emotional outburst of some fans last Wednesday at the GodswillAkpabio International Stadium.

“Every fan has the right to feel bad when his or her team is doing badly yet we must guard against taking the laws into our own hands by way of protest or dissatisfaction. We can understand what Liverpool fans are going through for losing two key matches at home in one week, including a semi final against Southampton after losing to Swansea 3-2 in the Premiership yet all hell has not been let loose…..

“Should we over react to the point of being fined or banned out of Uyo, great will be our loss going forward.

“The league fixture as it involves Akwa United is the most trying of all the teams. We started off in Ilorin on Sunday, rushed back to play Rivers on Wednesday (they strolled down the road) ran back to Bauchi (over 19 hrs on the road) hurried back to play Rangers(they strolled down the road) and here we are off to Katsina (Two days on the road) and we are expected to get back in time to be ready for Remo Stars.

“Let it also be on record that the two teams we have played so far at home are the best as per last season’s league, who have gone ahead to fortify their squad in readiness for the CAF Champions League

“These are not excuses but facts that need be addressed, realities that should evoke sympathy.

“If there is anytime we need our supporters and fans, it is now. We use this opportunity to thank the Akwa United Supporters Club most heartily for the over ninety minutes performance exhibited on Wednesday and promise that they will not regret supporting us.

“We call for patience, we call for understanding. We plead that unnecessary pressure should not be exerted on the boys and their coaches to the point where they become tense and anxious in front of their home fans. Elsewhere as we witnessed in Bauchi even when we outclassed them, they stayed with their team to the very end,” the release said.

The club explained that its pre season transfer acquisition was not faulty and that it stands to defend the quality and pedigree of every coach and player brought into the club and ended by being grateful to His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel by providing all that is needed for the club to succeed including the support of the supervising ministry headed by Sir Monday Uko the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports.

  • Anambra Central rerun: Umeh pleads for patience

Anambra Central rerun: Umeh pleads for patience

The candidate of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Anambra Central rerun, Chief Victor Umeh, has appealed for calm and patience.

The former past National Chairman of APGA, assured that the rerun would hold, despite politician’s antics to frustrate the conduct of the exercise with frivolous court cases.

The rerun fixed March 5  was postponed indefinitely by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enable it appeal an Abuja High Court ruling compelling it to include the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the judgement of the Court of Appeal that disqualified the party and its candidate from participating.

The APGA candidate said: “What played out in Anambra Central was what played out in Kogi East and Kogi Central Senatorial districts.

The PDP challenged conduct at the tribunal on the ground that they did conduct primaries. And the elections were nullified and their candidates were also disqualified by the Court of Appeal.

He said the rerun had  been concluded in Kogi East and Kogi Central senatorial districts.

Umeh said: “In the case of Anambra Central, PDP doesn’t want to give up. Their candidate has also gone to the Supreme Court, I mean their then candidate, who is no longer a PDP member, had gone to the Supreme Court to seek reinstatement, even when the final court that handles National Assembly matters is the Court of Appeal.

“So, they are doing everything to deny the people of Anambra Central the right of representation. Why PDP is struggling to be part of an election they are already out of the way, their candidate who was disqualified by the Court of Appeal is also struggling to get reinstated outside the provisions of the law.

“They’ve boasted openly that since they can no longer occupy that senatorial seat that nobody will occupy it until 2019. And they are working hard to frustrate the Court of Appeal from hearing the Appeals pending at the Court of Appeal against the judgement of the High Court that ordered that PDP should take part in a rerun after their candidate has been disqualified.

‘They are doing everything to frustrate the progress of the matter at the Court of Appeal. For me, I feel so bad because there are so much to be done for our people using that opportunity. But they have no option other than to be patient. I am urging them to be calm and patient. The antics of those causing this unnecessary delay will be exhausted very soon.”

He explained that Ekwunife’s adventurous appeal at the Supreme Court, was argued on the November 14, noting that the Supreme Court has reserved judgement for  February 10 next year.

“If on that day the Supreme Court upholds the law and puts her case to rest, that distraction will be completely over; her own distraction will be over. Then we will accelerate action on the pending appeal at the Court of Appeal for which they have gone on an interlocutory appeal to the Supreme Court. So, God willing and God being our helper all those protracted issues will be resolved. And the election will be conducted by God’s grace.

Umeh added: “I know the good people of Anambra Central are missing a lot already, because if I have been there before now, the story would have completely changed. But they must know that anything that will be good, before it will come your way; you have to put up a very strong fight for it.

“I am assuring them that even if it is two years that we are able to salvage in the current tenure they will see the difference, very big difference than what they have been seeing before. And like I have said before, they will just have to be patient because there is no alternative to doing what is lawful.

“If we don’t fight all this brigandage that has been going on in Anambra State during elections – the manipulations they have been doing in this state, there will be no stop to it. So, by the time we go through the whole hog of this Anambra Central senatorial district issue, people will learn their lessons.

“People will be prepared to submit themselves to the provisions of the law. Anybody who wants to contest election knows that there is no shortcut to obtaining the mandate to represent the people.

“When elections are called in the future, people will be prepared to be vigilant and look at what the law say, keep yourself in line with the laws and go to the people to obtain your mandate, without keeping your hope in rigging elections, manipulating the security agencies and the INEC.”
