Pogba tips  Dembele  ahead of Yamal for Ballon d’Or

Paul Pogba has backed Ousmane Dembele to win the 2025 Ballon d’Or ahead of Lamine Yamal.

The former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder insists that if his fellow Frenchman Ousmane Dembele does not win the Ballon d’Or this year, he never will.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has enjoyed a sensational 12 months, helping his side win their first ever UEFA Champions League crown with a 5-0 win over Italian giants Inter Milan.

Dembele finished the 2024/2025 campaign with 35 goals and 16 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions, but he has faced stiff competition for football’s most coveted individual honour from Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal.

Yamal has cemented his place as the beautiful game’s most exciting young prospect over the last year, but Pogba believes Dembele deserved to win the award after PSG’s Champions League triumph.

“It’s not about that [choosing Dembele because he is French],” said the former Juventus and Manchester United midfielder during an interview with iShowSpeed. “It is my opinion that Ousmane Dembele will always be a bit ahead of Lamine Yamal [this year], even if he killed it this year, because he won the UEFA Champions League.

“He was so important, scoring goals in big games and doing stuff like that.

“This is his year; if he does not win it now, he will never win it. So I will definitely go for [Dembele]. That is what I think.

“It can go both ways, though, but that is what I think. It does not really matter what I think, I think about what they are going to say.”

Pogba signed a two-year deal with French side Monaco this summer.

The FIFA World Cup winner had previously missed almost two full seasons after receiving a doping ban.

Yamal helped Barcelona win La Liga last season, scoring 18 goals and providing 25 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions.

Other contenders for the 2025 Ballon d’Or include Dembele’s teammates Vitinha and Achraf Hakimi.

“Bro, it is tough,” added Pogba. “Lamine for sure will be in the top three, [and then there is] Hakimi, Vitinha. Hakimi and Vitinha have been crazy.

“Kylian Mbappe, I know they have been killing him, but he is the top goal scorer in Europe. It is crazy.

“It is tough for me to say, respect though, it is going to be a tough one, but I think Dembele is ahead.”

Pogba’s brother, five others docked  for blackmail

Six men linked to France midfielder Paul Pogba, including one of his brothers, went on trial in Paris yesterday  accused of blackmail, attempted extortion of millions of euros and holding the player at gunpoint.

The case at the Paris criminal court has shocked the French football world – all the more so because the alleged perpetrators include three childhood friends and Pogba’s own brother Mathias.

Tuesday’s trial comes on top of professional woes for Pogba, whose career has struggled since France’s spectacular 2018 World Cup win when he scored against Croatia in the Moscow final.

He suffered through repeated injuries and patchy form that led to his 2022 departure from Manchester United, returning to Juventus where he remained in and out of treatment.

The Turin club this month cancelled his contract following his 18-month suspension until March 2025 for doping.

The six defendants in Paris are accused of attempting to squeeze 13 million euros ($13.5 million) out of Pogba.

All, including Mathias, and one defendant who has been remanded in custody, were present in court as the trial opened. Paul Pogba himself was not present and his lawyers have said he will not attend the trial.

Defence lawyers asked for the trial to be adjourned on procedural grounds with the court due to rule later.

Mathias was the one to go public in the case, publishing a video on social media in August 2022 promising revelations about his younger brother that were “likely to be explosive”.

In a subsequent clip, Mathias accused Paul Pogba of casting an evil spell on his France teammate Kylian Mbappe.

Paul Pogba’s lawyers and his agent Rafaela Pimenta said in a statement later that the videos “came on top of threats and attempts at extortion”.

He had already filed criminal complaints in Italy and France in July that year.

Pogba told French investigators he had in March 2022 been “tricked by childhood friends” from the gritty Paris suburb where he and Mathias grew up.

He accused them of snatching him before he was held at gunpoint by two hooded men with assault rifles, demanding 13 million euros for “services rendered” and blaming him for not helping them financially.

Pogba said at the time that he had paid them only 100,000 euros.

The footballer said he had also been pressured at the France national team’s training centre in Clairefontaine, at one of his homes in Manchester, and at Juventus training ground.

Pogba added that he had also paid a bill of more than 57,000 euros that the same friends had racked up at the Adidas store on Paris’s glitzy Champs-Elysees avenue.

“It’s been really difficult for me off the pitch, what’s happened, it’s been especially hard mentally,” Pogba told broadcaster Al-Jazeera at the end of last season.

“Money changes people, it’s the truth, it can destroy a family, start a war.”

Pogba’s lawyer Pierre-Jean Douvier declined to comment ahead of the case when contacted by AFP.

  • PAUL POGBA: The back-story, the wasted talent

PAUL POGBA: The back-story, the wasted talent

    • By Emlyn Begley

Paul Pogba’s career could be over after his four-year ban for doping with the feeling that the 30-year-old Juventus midfielder never fulfilled his potential. The former Manchester United player, who won the World Cup with France, was supremely talented and in bursts looked an absolute world-beater – but he never really showed it on a consistent basis.

He has already said he will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), but if that fails, by the time he will be eligible to play again – August 2027 – he will be 34 and without a club.

So it will be a big ask for a player who has not managed the equivalent of 22 full league games in a season since 2018-19 to stay fit and motivated for such a long period of time.

French football journalist Julien Laurens said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Euro Leagues show: “I remember seeing him as a 15-year-old and he was the best thing I’ve ever seen.

“He was so good, a generational talent, an absolute genius.

“He had a good career, he won four Serie A titles and the World Cup. It’s a really good career. But he was so good that I thought there was no limit.

“I thought he’ll get to the top, he’ll win Ballons d’Or, he’ll win more trophies and be the best player in the world.

“In the end we will always look back at his career and him probably the same way thinking what should have been.”

    What now for Pogba?

Pogba was provisionally suspended in September after a drugs test taken after the opening game of the season found elevated levels of testosterone in his system.

Laurens said: “The story being told is he’s got a friend who is a doctor in Miami that gave him some food supplements which he took not knowing what’s in them and that’s what caused all of this.

“He could have easily said ‘I was naive, I didn’t pay attention and I should have mentioned it to Juventus’ medical staff’ and maybe the sentence would have been reduced.

“For him to expect less than four years because he said ‘I didn’t know I was taking it and hoping for the best’, I find it a little naive.”

Italian football expert Mina Rzouki said: “His sentence can be reduced if an athlete can prove their doping was not intentional or their samples were contaminated – or if the player provides substantial assistance to help the investigators.

“So it’s hinging on whether not he can prove this was unintentional and then there is potential we could see the ban reduced to two years which may mean he could make a comeback.”

Laurens said: “I think four years does [end his career]. He’s almost 31. You add four years to that. For 18 months he has barely played because of injury. So it’s not just four years without football, it’s almost six years.

“I’m not sure he would want at 35 to be ready to go again. I think this is how it will end if this ban is upheld. If it’s two years there’s a chance at 33 someone gives him one last contract.”

Juventus are thought to have cut his salary down to about £2,000 a month – as part of a collective agreement between clubs and the players’ union.

Pogba was earning £6.9m a year. Juve have the option to cancel his contract, which runs until June 2026 – more than a year before the four-year ban would be over.

Italian football writer James Horncastle said: “Juventus have not put out a statement. Their sporting director, when he was last asked, said they’d await the final outcome of the process.

“There’s still an appeal to go to CAS. Until that is exhausted we’ll not have an official statement from Juventus on what actions they can take.”

Did Pogba’s career live up to expectations?

By most metrics, Pogba had an extremely successful career.

He started his career at Manchester United before moving to Juventus, where he won Serie A in each of his first four seasons at the club – including two doubles.

He then returned to United for a world-record £89m in 2016. In his first season at United he won the Europa League and FA Cup.

Pogba, who won 91 caps for France, then helped Les Bleus to 2018 World Cup glory, scoring a goal in the final as they beat Croatia 4-2 in Russia.

In the two seasons either side of that World Cup, he had a hand in 38 Premier League goals for United (six goals and 10 assists in 2017-18 and 13 goals and nine assists in 2018-19).

But for a player who was tipped to be a legend, he never got close to a Ballon d’Or – and those two trophies in 2017 with United would prove to be the last two of his club career.

Injuries interrupted his final three seasons at United, with lack of form not helping either, and his return as a free agent to Juventus 18 months ago was meant to be a new start.

But more injuries, and then this ban when he was finally fit, mean he has only played 213 minutes for the Italian club.

“It was supposed to be a reunion telling a new story, a prodigal son returning to Juventus. This summer everyone thought this would be the year and he would do something special,” said Rzouki.

“Both the club and the player wanted to write the story of the icon’s triumphant return. Instead, we will be left wondering what will happen to a player who never quite fulfilled his true potential.”

Laurens added: “He got to be one of the best players in the world, 2018 was the pinnacle of his career in Russia with France, but not as high as he should have been. He’ll agree with that.

“The only way I’d use the word waste for him and his talent is because he should have had a much better career than what he’s had.”

  • Real Madrid push for Pogba again

Real Madrid are ready to make one last approach for Paul Pogba this summer, with Manchester United facing a fight to keep him at the club in the long-term.

The France international has been heavily linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu for some time and the player has hinted he would be keen to join the La Liga giants.

Manchester United are adamant they will not sell this summer, particularly given they can’t replace him until January, and plan to reject any offer out of hand.

But Real Madrid want to apply more pressure on the already strained relationship between Pogba and United by pushing to sign him again, according to The Times.

With Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera leaving in the past eight months, United are light on central midfield options and any sale seems unlikely.

But with Pogba’s agent working on a deal for months and Real president Florentino Perez desperate to deliver Pogba for Zinedine Zidane – who had made the Frenchman and Eden Hazard his top summer targets – Madrid will make a last ditch attempt to land him this summer.

  • Pogba remains at Man. Utd – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he has “no doubt” midfielder Paul Pogba will stay at the club this summer.

The France World Cup winner missed United’s final pre-season game, a penalty-shootout win over AC Milan in the International Champions Cup.

But Solskjaer said Pogba, who did not travel to Cardiff for the match, was not risked due to a back strain.

“I wasn’t expecting him [to travel],” he said.

Solskjaer also confirmed the £80m signing of Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire is set to be announced “very soon”.

  • Maradona offers to manage Manchester United without Pogba

Diego Maradona believes he is the man to bring the good times back to Manchester United if the club has run out of patience with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The outspoken Argentine is currently managing Dorados in Mexico’s second division but nonetheless, he is adamant he can deliver trophies if he was put in the Old Trafford hot seat.

Maradona, who was speaking to FourFourTwo, hinted that he  would shake up the current squad by ditching midfielder Paul Pogba as he feels he ‘doesn’t work hard enough’ to remain in the side.

‘If Manchester [United] need a coach, I’m the man to do it,’ he said. ‘I know they sell lots of shirts around the world, but they need to win trophies, too. I can do that for them.’

Pogba’s future remains unclear this summer after enough tricky season back with United.

Real Madrid are keen to bolster their midfield while Juventus are also rumoured to be monitoring the Frenchman’s situation at Old Trafford.

For Maradona, Pogba’s work-rate would see him axed should he ever find himself in the hot-seat and managing the player.

Maradona, who managed the Argentina national team between 2008-10, is a cult hero throughout the game but may face a tough task of winning over United supporters given his links to rivals Manchester City.

City striker Sergio Aguero used to be Maradona’s son-in-law and the 58-year-old paid close attention to the success garnered by those in the blue half of Manchester.

Aguero was married to Gianna Maradona and the pair have a son together, Benjamin, leading his ex-wife’s father to form a bond with Aguero’s side.

‘Manchester United used to be my favourite English team for so long. So many great players and a great team under Alex Ferguson,’ he added.

‘But now I have to say Man City. I know you shouldn’t change like that but it’s because of Kun [Aguero]. We speak a lot and he plays in a very good team,” Maradona had said when the going was good.

  • Pogba penalties seal victory for Manchester United over West Ham

Two penalties from Paul Pogba earned Manchester United a 2-1 win over West Ham at Old Trafford as they moved up to fifth, within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea.

Pogba converted in the first half after Robert Snodgrass was adjudged to have fouled Juan Mata and after Felipe Anderson equalised early in the second, struck again after a foul on Anthony Martial.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rested Victor Lindelof, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay ahead of next week’s Champions League game at Barcelona while Marko Arnautovic did not even make the bench for West Ham.

Fred had a shot from outside the area blocked after the ball fell to him from a Mata corner, and Declan Rice cut out a Martial pass as United tried to work the ball into the box.

After 10 minutes, West Ham had the ball in the net when Anderson hooked home amid defensive confusion, only for United to be reprieved by a tight offside call.

But after 19 minutes Pogba who put United ahead from the spot after Snodgrass challenged Mata just inside the area.

Lanzini saw a free kick deflected over after Pogba was penalised for a high foot 25 yards out, and Anderson’s flick-on went across goal with no teammate able to get a touch.

Romelu Lukaku set up a chance for Pogba, whose strike was blocked, and he was again involved when he found Dalot, whose attempt was wayward.

With the first half entering its final 10 minutes, Mata’s cross was steered over by Martial from a difficult angle and then Chris Smalling’s header from a Mata corner was too high.

But West Ham needed only four minutes of the second half to level, Lanzini producing an excellent cross for Anderson to steer past De Gea from close range.

The visitors were growing in confidence, Pablo Zabaleta trying his luck with a shot from outside the area that was held by De Gea.

Solskjaer made an early change as he looked to refresh his side, Rashford on for Mata, and Rashford almost made an instant impact when his angled strike was stopped by Lukasz Fabianski.

Lanzini suffered an injury and was unable to continue, Grady Diangana replacing him and then Rashford headed over from close range when he should have scored.

Marcos Rojo tried his luck from 25 yards, Fabianski saving, and at the other end Rojo blocked a fierce Rice effort.

Former United player Javier Hernandez made way for Michael Antonio after 72 minutes and Solskjaer made a double change, Mason Greenwood on for Lukaku and Andreas Pereira replacing Rojo.

Moments after West Ham had introduced Ryan Fredericks for Zabaleta, Antonio smashed a fine strike against the crossbar from the edge of the box with De Gea well beaten, and the United keeper then conjured a stunning save from the same player’s header.

And the Hammers were left to rue those moments when United were awarded their second penalty, Fredericks fouling Martial and Pogba stepping up to convert again for the game’s decisive moment.

  • Paul Pogba:  Ole deserves Man United full-time job

As if rubbing in his widely known cat and dog relationship with former Coach Jose Mourinho, France international and World cup winner Paul Pogba has described Manchester United caretaker coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the “man wey sabi” ( The one who knows the job as opposed to the special one).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer according to Pogba who has become a super performer for the Reds, ‘deserves’ the Manchester United job full-time after transforming the club during his three months as caretaker boss.

Pogba admits the united players lost confidence and stopped enjoying their football under Jose Mourinho, who stripped the Frenchman of the vice-captaincy in September as their relationship turned sour.

Solskjaer has engineered a remarkable turnaround, guiding United into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and giving his old club a strong chance of finishing in the top-four.

No-one has benefitted as much as Pogba who was dropped to the bench at the end of Mourinho’s reign but has scored nine goals in 17 games under his Norwegian successor.

Solskjaer has yet to be told by the Old Trafford hierarchy if he will be handed a long-term contract beyond the end of this season, but Pogba insists he has the players backing.

‘Of course we want him to stay,’ said United’s record £89million signing. ‘The results have been great. I have a great relationship with him; he has a great relationship with the players.

‘When a player is happy, he wants to keep being happy. Solskjaer deserves it. He knows the club; he knows everything about the club. He is a really happy coach that gave confidence back to the players.

‘This gave us the freedom to play and enjoy football again because maybe we lost that with the results that we had before.’
