Appeal Court judgement, temporary setback – Makarfi

The Caretaker committee Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Muhammad Makarfi has described Friday’s ruling of the Court of Appeal which gave judgement in favour of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as a temporary set-back.

Addressing newsmen at  his Kaduna residence in reaction to the ruling ,the PDP chieftain reiterated that his party would overcome this set back politically and legally and would come out of it stronger‎ and bigger.

He said further, ‘”We have utmost respect for the judiciary. So we are not going to take the laws into our hands. We might not agree with the judgement but there is a process and procedure if you did not agree with something.

To this end, he said, “as an individual, I cannot decide for the party until the party stakeholders meet and take a definite decision.

“The party will meet on Monday to take a decision of the Court of Appeal Judgement. Every person concerned had been notified. The governors, members of the National Assembly, members of the Board of trustees and Party officials.”

He therefore called on party members to remain calm, urging them to remember that PDP is in opposition. “We have to accept this temporary set-back,” he reiterated.

He maintained that since he took over the party, the party had done a lot of things to remain afloat, pointing out, “We will not allow opposition to be killed. We must strive to ensure that we survive for the sake of democracy and the country.

Asked if on Monday, the Ali Modu sheriff faction might occupied the party secretariat based on the judgement, he said he is not in position to tell the world what Sheriff will do.

However, he would be surprised if the security will allow him (Sheriff) access to the party secretariat.

“When a court ruled in our favour sometimes ago, we were not allowed to occupy the secretariat. So, we are going to see what happens this time around,” he emphasised.

  • Abia PDP chieftain, others defect to APC

Abia PDP chieftain, others defect to APC

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart in Abia State, Chief Uche Akwukwegbu, with his supporters, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akwukwegbu and the other defectors were received during the party’s stakeholders’ meeting at the country home of a former member of the House of Representatives, Obioma Acho, at Umuopara in Umuahia, the state capital.
Prominent among the defectors were: Humphrey Azubuike, former member of the House of Assembly; Maj.-Gen. Ogbonna Okoro (retd.); former Transition Committee (TC) Chairman of Bende Local Government, Ben Kalu; Uwah, former TC Chairman of Isiala Ngwa Local Government and Chidi Nwosu, former member of the House of Assembly from Umuahia.
APC chieftains, who received the defectors, were: former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu; Chief Sam Nkire, Board of Trustees (BoT) member; Senators Bob Nwanunu, Nkechi Nwogu and Chris Adighije.
Others are: Mrs Enuice Uzor Kalu, Capt. Awah, Chief Tony Ukasoanya, Obioma Acho and K. C. Ugboaja.
Addressing reporters on behalf of other defectors, Akwukwegbu said he and the others left PDP because the party had failed Abia residents, particularly in the past nine years.
He said: “We sympathise with Abians. We regret being party to the mess they’ve been through, particularly in the past nine years. That is why we have come today to apologise to them.
“We are people who believe in the masses and who believe that the right thing must be done. That is why we’ve abandoned PDP to join APC, the moving train.”
BAWAS, as his supporters call him, said: “The immediate past government in the state was horrible and terrible. The present government should be independent of itself and work towards tidying up the arrears of workers’ salaries.”
The politician advised other Abia residents in other parties to join the APC.
He said this would enable them to see what he and other defectors saw that spurred them to join the progressives’ train and save the state.
Akwukwegbu said the PDP was in the hands of those he called cabals, who he said hijacked the state’s commonwealth.
The politician, who is popularly called the Prime Minister of Ibeku, said APC would produce the next Abia State governor in 2019 and win majority of the seats for elective positions.
Receiving the former PDP members, APC State Chairman Donatus Nwankpa expressed optimism about the chances of the party in the state.
The chairman recalled that former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu recently joined the party with his supporters.

Nwankpa said he was elated by the calibre of men and women joining APC in the state.
He expressed optimism that with the heavyweight politicians in the progressives’ fold in Abia State, the APC would form the next government in the state.
Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Acho Obioma, urged the party’s state executives to work harder for its success in future elections.
A delegation of APC stalwarts, led by Senator Chris Adighije, visited a BoT member, Prince Benjamin Apugo, at his Nkata Ibeku home, also in Umuahia, for what they called a reconciliatory visit.

  • PDP chieftain escapes death in Lagos

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming House of representatives bye-election in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government of Lagos State, Babatunde Akinyele, narrowly escaped death on Saturday when his campaign office was attacked by unknown gunmen.

The men, alleged to be brandishing guns, machetes and other dangerous weapons, damaged the doors and windows of the building when it was clear to them that their objective of attacking the aspirant could not be achieved. They also vandalised campaign vehicles of the candidate and went with all the keys of the vehicles.

Disclosing this to The Nation in a telephone chat moments after the attack, Akinyele said he narrowly escaped from his assailants since he left his campaign office barely five minutes before they arrived. He said his neighbour, a retired security operative managed to dislodged the assailants, and seized two hand held pistols from the attackers.

Akinyele who said he has gone to formally lodge the development at the police station said he was shocked at the development. He demanded adequate security before and after the election to forestall any other development.

  • PDP chieftain defect to APC

    PDP chieftain defect to APC

Scores of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Alliance for Democracy (AD) supporters in Oke-Agbe, Ondo State, have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors were led by their leaders, including a chieftain of PDP, Hon. Gabriel Talabi and the Secretary of AD in that council, Mr. Sunday Akindeji.

They offically dumped their old parties at the campaign rally of the APC governorship candidate, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) at Oke-Agbe.

They were received by Akeredolu and the Director General of the Akeredolu Campaign Organisation, Hon. Victor Olambitan, Ade Adetimehin, Tunji Abayomi, among others.

Talabi lamented the neglect of the local government area by the outgoing PDP administration, in terms of roads and other social amenities.

He stressed that they have decided to join the progressive party and also believe that if Akeredolu emerges, Akoko will not be neglected.

Abayomi promised to deliver the local government area to the APC on November 26.

Akeredolu and Olabimtan, who spoke at the rally, promised to correct the mistakes of the past in the local government, if the APC wins the coming governorship election.

They thanked the defectors for their support and equally urged them to beware of the antics of desperadoes who are deceiving people around that the APC had collapsed its structure with AD.

They insisted that the APC remains intact in the state and that it is mentally, intellectually and physically-ready to end the age-long underdevelopment that had enveloped the state in the last eight years.

  • PDP chieftain hail Edo lawmakers over Speaker’s seat

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state, Okharedia Ihimekpen has hailed lawmakers in the Edo State House of Assembly for returning the Speakership seat to Esanland.

Ihimekpen said the lawmakers did the right thing by picking a lawmaker from the Okpehbo axis in Esanland.

The PDP chieftain said the Okpehbho axis has been marginalized over the years by Chief Tony Anenih who is from Agbazilo axis.

Mrs. Elisabeth Ativie stepped down for Justus Okonoboh to emerge as Speaker following criticism that the APC had marginalized the Esanland.

Ihimekpen said the crisis about Edo Central marginalization started with the PDP in 1999.

He said the APC should be commended for looking at Okpehbo people and that such move would serve as a good omen for the party.

His words: “If it were some PDP leaders in the past, they will prefer it is zoned to Uromi or Agbazilo. In 1999 they conspired to zone the governorship to Edo South at the detriment of Edo Central. In 2003, the same leaders came up with a formula that they was no vacancy at government House still at the detriment of Edo Central.

“In 2007, when an Edo Central man became governor, the conspired to remove him just for three commissioners. Still at the detriment of Edo Central. In 2012, they zoned it to Edo South to the detriment of Edo Central, in 2016 again, they zoned it to Edo South at the detriment of Edo Central. Then the question is who is fooling who? And who has marginalized Edo Central?”

A chieftain of the APC, Comrade Mathew Emiohe, said the move would guarantee victory for APC in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Comrade Emiohe said the APC was now positioned to break the PDP grip in Edo Central with the return of  the speakership to Esanland.

“I think it is a welcome development for my people, we actually felt marginalized but now with the Speaker position I can assure you that a lot of thing will change politically in the area, it was a good.”

  • We are ready for APC in Ondo, says PDP chieftain

We are ready for APC in Ondo, says PDP chieftain

Ayo Fadaka is the Director of Media and Publicity of the Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). In this interview with DAMISI OJO in Akure, the state capital, he speaks on the preparation for the governorship election and other issues.

How is the PDP preparing for the governorhip election in Ondo State?

In the life of our state, this year is very important because of the governorship election that hopefully comes up in October. Political parties, both the serious and the mundane ones, are already getting set for the all-important contest.

In the PDP, we are mindful of our placing and position in the state. We have also taken cognizance of developments in our polity, the new challenges that may confront us and the possible emerging variables that may play a dominant role in the election. I assure you that we are working ahead, confident that all issues will be properly addressed. The fact that you have not seen any of our governorship aspirants running around and heating the polity is a clear manifestation of the control mechanism within the party. Discipline within the party is a strength we hope to use to the maximum in the coming days.

Many of your members have defected to the APC in protest against Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s style. Will that not affect the fortunes of your party to retain power?

I don’t understand what you mean by saying our valuable members have defected to the APC. What I do know is that we lost some and  gained others. As some were leaving, many were coming in droves. So, I cannot say that their leaving have had much impact on us. You may wish to ask me, why? Before the elections last year, many left the party for the APC and another set of fifth columnists remained in the fold to sabotage our presidential election efforts; they  only decamped after that election. Of course, we lost the presidential elections to the APC. This was not because of their activities, but due to the fact that the electorate had swallowed the deceit that the “change” mantra represented. However, the defining moment for us was the House of Assembly election which we won overwhelmingly. These so-called “valuable” members were defeated flatly in their backyard during that election. Their much-touted relevance, which they claim is their selling point simply did not sell; it was bad market for them and the trend will also continue. Therefore, you will agree with me that the election points to the fact that our party is resourceful and absolutely dynamic, because it demonstrated its ability to reverse an ugly trend and equally its mastery and understanding of the terrain where we play.

Most of the politicians that defected were mere political jobbers in search of filthy lucre they presume will be available to them through their membership of the APC. I wish them luck. I know however that some of our friends who defected to the APC are daily groaning and full of regrets for their hasty action. This is because they still remain outsiders in that party where some “aboriginal” tenets are employed to shut them out or limit their level of participation. Again, I declare that before the election, we will still harvest  some, if not all of them as undemocratic actions within APC will drive them back to their political homestead which the PDP represents.

The PDP remains solid in this state and that has not changed. You also allude to the presumption that Governor Mimiko hijacked the party. That is not true; no such thing happened. There are many levels of decision making in the party at all times and in all issues. These many levels play their roles effectively and it is not a case of the Governor, as the leader of the party pronouncing decrees on developments. For every appointment that the Governor made recently, it went through these levels, so it’s erroneous to even think or imagined that Mimiko hijacked the Party, he is too democratically minded to contemplate such action.

There is a rumour that Mimiko has his own candidate for the ticket. Don’t you believe in credible primary where an acceptable candidate will emerge?

There are numerous talk in town about candidates, the most interesting thing is that the APC is the one shouting loudest about Mimiko’s choice amongst the aspirants, this only indicate that they are scared about the fact that our Party will once again trounce them, as we traditionally do, in the forthcoming governorship election.

However it is absolutely necessary to restate the fact that our Party has guidelines and constitutional provisions that guide how our candidates will emerge and we respect the constitution of the Party so much that every provision and clauses that relate to the conduct of the primary election will be obeyed. Ours is a democratic Party that relies absolutely on the desires of its membership and does not have a conclave where anointing  is made, thus at the appointed time, the whole world will witness our primary elections and see who emerges as our flag bearer, but I tell you that whoever becomes our candidate is that man who must have transversed the length and breath of the State to sell his candidature to Party members and in whom confidence must have been reposed!

What is your opinion on the proposed local government election in the state?

This State is actually overripe for the conduct of the Local Government election and I thank God that we now have a date for the election. Our Party welcome the development and will as such contest in every Ward and local government. I understand that the APC says it won’t contest the election, no problem, but I belief the Party is merely scared to expose the fact that is is merely a surface Party here in Ondo State and therefore not likely to make a headway in the election. They therefore do not want to expose to their sponsors that they are a bad investment here. That election will certainly be free, typical of elections conducted under PDP governments since the Jonathan era. It is only in APC States that actual results of voting in local governments elections are completely disregarded and conjured results are produced and made to stand. This happened in Lagos under Babatunde Fashola and also in Rivers under Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, but ours won’t be like that as we have credible professionals manning our SIEC, men who will work according to the dictates of their conscience and do only that which is right.

Governor Mimiko too does not breath down on the institutions of state as he allows them to discharge their statutory functions unhindered, therefore if there are people in this APC wishing to contest and they are sure of their popularity and ability to win elections in their wards and local government, let them get out of that party, join another and test their popularity now! It is evil for them to jettison their ambition because a Party is just to timid to test its popularity and acceptability.

How how many aspirants are in the race for the PDP?

We have a number of people that are interested in becoming governor and they are solid characters who are accomplished in every respect. They are men who are of stern characters and discipline in every respect again. It will be wrong for me to tell you their numbers now as I may be shutting out some who may still wish to enter the race. However we have a manageable number and not a motley rowdy crowd others have and the benefit in this is that it will give us an added advantage in managing the Party.

How will you react to the on-going probe of $2.1b arms cash?

Like any well intentioned Nigerian, I have always said that corruption is evil and we are its victims, any action that is geared to exterminate this scourge is laudable, but such actions must be sincere and wholesale. It must not in any manner be selective or enmeshed in propaganda and falsehood. The $2.1billion issue is a propaganda issue, fact of the matter is that this amount represents the entire defense budget for the about six years that Jonathan was President and we all know that in all budgets, there are recurrent and capital issues and if the Buhari government is saying that all this was stolen, it means salaries were not paid to the personnel under the defense ministry, both military and civilian! Isn’t that curious? It is also not out of place that people saddled with responsibilities may sometimes become deviant and not execute their assignments diligently, thereby necessitating this kind of development. It does not mean that it is the Party he belongs to that is responsible for it. The Halliburton matter far outweighs this issue and those responsible for that heist are today me,bears of the APC and government is still silent on it. Corruption is evil and its perpetrators are evil minded, there must be no discrimination in addressing it. I am sure more revelations on corruption will still be unearthed, even the President must be ready to surrender himself for probe when those that directly concern him are mentioned, that is just the required attitude to deal with corruption.

Again I observe that only PDP people, safe for that Isa, have been interdicted for corruption, tried and convicted in the media, while APC people are angels! It is even jocularly said that if you become a member of APC today, your past corruptions are forgiven and this talk is being walked! There is a Jim Nwobodo who was also alleged to have received  N500 million, but since he became APC, nothing has happened to him.

It is essential that government get its act together and work for the nation properly, what obtains today is a mere mockery, though not that I expected much, in any case.

  • ACF, PDP chieftain say campaign reckless, uncharitable

ACF, PDP chieftain say campaign reckless, uncharitable

AN advertorial entitled: NIGERIANS BEWARNED!, sponsored by Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and published yesterday on the cover of two national dailies, has introduced a dangerous dimension into the presidential election campaign.

In the advertorial, the author asked Nigerians not to vote for the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), who in his wisdom, is too old for the exalted office.

Besides, Fayose alleged that three former leaders, who hailed from the Northwest of the country died in office, saying the country could no longer afford state burial. The governor listed Gen Murtala Mohammed, Gen Sani Abacha and Alhaji Musa Yar’Ardua as former heads of state, who died in office.

But a chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Anthony Sani, described the on-going campaign against Gen. Buhari as worrisome. He said the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has gone berserk.

The ACF had an ally in a former PDP governorship aspirant in Kaduna State, Shuaibu Idris Mikati , who said the campaign of death-wish by the PDP against Gen Buhari has done incalculable damage to whatever chances President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP may have had have in the North.

Sani and Shuaibu spoke with The Nation in separate chats.

Shauibu, who has not defected from the PDP described the advertorial credited to the Ekiti governor governor as “most reckless, unwarranted and uncharitable.”

According to him, it was unfortunate that the governor Fayose embarked on such a devilish analysis aimed at denigrating the Northwest region, stating that his action smacks of desperation and lack of the fear of God.

He said: “Governor Fayose’s advertorial is most reckless and unguarded. He has forgotten that no human has control over death. Only yesterday, I attended the burial of a two-year-old child, yet it was not the wish of his parents that he should die.

“Now, we have a governor in modern day Nigeria, talking about the death of former leaders as if he himself has control over death. This is quite absurd and unfortunate. “

Also speaking, the ACF spokesman described the campaigns against Gen. Buhari as worrisome and unfortunate. He urged politicians to keep to what they know instead of telling lies about the health and certificate status of Gen. Buhari.

Sani said: “The allegations about certificate and ill-health against Gen. Buhari by the opposition party is worrisome in the sense that the campaigns should assume responsibility for issues that are of real concern to Nigerians instead of dwelling on irrelevance and things that do not matter.

“Happily enough, both Professors Itse Sagay and Tam David West have said the courses attended and the public offices held by Buhari are over and above the educational requirements being demanded by the constitution.

“Also Ahmadu Bello University has put health matter to rest by saying the documents being circulated about the General’s health status are fake. So, as the politicians canvass for votes, they should keep to what they know”, Sani said.

  • Oyo blames PDP chieftain for market crisis

Oyo blames PDP chieftain for market crisis

Oyo State government has accused a leading Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain of coordinating renegades among Temidire Plank Market sellers against the administration.

The government said the aim of the PDP chieftain was to cause disaffection between government and the people.

The Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Dr. Festus Adedayo, made this known in a statement in reaction to allegation that a government agency dispersed some of the renegades from the market.

The government had acquired the market some years ago and relocated the traders to the Fashade area of the state capital.

But this decision had generated bad blood between it and some members of the market who insisted that they would not move out of the market.

“It is apparent that the said PDP stalwart is doing this for an ulterior motive. He coordinates dissent against government at the market and is their arrowhead. In fuelling the renegades, he apparently hopes to score cheap political points and paint government in bad light.

“The market construction has been delayed for too long because of this prolonged, fuelled antagonism against government. Government considers the interest of the people first and not the narrow interest of politicians who are sponsoring the dissent,” said the statement.

The government said it had done everything humanly possible to advance the cause of building a befitting market for the people of Temidire but its efforts were frustrated by a cabal, whose actions were fuelled by a political undertone.

It said it had in the last one year met leaders of the market several times, provided an alternative market for the plank sellers at the Fashade village, with all conveniences, including transformers.

PDP chieftain embraces Obasanjo’s olive branch

The Chairman, Organisation and Mobilisation Committee, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest, Prince Buruji Kashamu, has welcomed the olive branch extended by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and others who offended him.

Obasanjo said on Sunday that he had forgiven Atiku and others who offended him.

In a statement in Lagos, Kashamu, who has been quarelling with the former President over some issues, said: “Baba Obasanjo’s offer is a welcome development that should be embraced not only by all those who offended him but also by those he (Obasanjo) had offended.

“Although some doubting Thomases have said they are waiting to see him walk the talk, I strongly believe that this is one opportunity that we all must not allow to slip off our hands.

“It is in the light of the above that I hope to see a rapprochement in the days ahead between Chief Obasanjo and I on the one hand; and between him and the present administration on the other hand. On my part, I have embraced our Baba’s offer and will do all within my powers to keep the peace. I have equally forgiven him and others who might have offended me.”
