  • Atiku’s campaign council: Umahi denies rejecting appointment

The Ebonyi State Government has debunked insinuations on social media alleging that the state governor, David Umahi, has rejected his recent appointment as the South-east coordinator of the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign.

A state official also said Mr Umahi has pledged loyalty to Mr Abubakar’s presidential campaign.

Mr Abubakar is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has selected a former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, as his running mate.

Mr Umahi, who is also of the PDP, has in the past declared his fondness of President Muhammadu Buhari and recently criticised the mode of selection of Mr Obi; a factor that may have fuelled the rumour.

The Ebonyi governor’s stance was explained after Friday’s State Security Council meeting.

The government also denied speculations that the governor had concluded plans to distribute bags of Abakaliki rice branded with campaign pictures of Mr Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Mr Umahi’s stance was declared by the Ebonyi State information commissioner, Emmanuel Onwe.

He said the reports that the governor was working for any other presidential candidate other than Mr Abubakar and his running mate was false, wicked and malicious.

Mr Onwe said his principal considers his appointment as the South-east coordinator of Atiku/Obi campaign organisation as a great honour and would discharge the duties thereof with immense commitment and dedication.

He urged the general public to disregard any other reports to the contrary, describing them as the handiwork of mischief makers.

The social media has been awash with reports alleging that the governor had rejected his appointment.

The governor was said to have disclosed his rejection of the appointment during the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

But Mr Onwe said there was no time the issue of Atiku/Obi election or campaign was discussed during the meeting.

“The governor never rejected his appointment as the Coordinator of Atiku/Obi Campaign Organization for South-East”, he said.

“The social media report to that effect is false and should be disregarded. I was at the exco meeting of yesterday, at no time was such thing discussed. The governor considers the appointment as a great honour and would discharge his duties in that regard with great commitment and dedication.

“They also said that the governor has concluded plans to distribute bags of rice with the pictures of the presidential candidate of the APC; that is also not true.

“The governor does not know any other Presidential Candidate except that of his party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Mr. Peter Obi,” Mr Onwe said.

  • PDP stakeholders accuse Jonathan, Turnah, others of anti-party activities

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  under the auspices of the Ogbia PDP Renaissance (OPR) has accused some leaders of Ogbia Local Government Area including former President Goodluck Jonathan of working against the interest of the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The stakeholders specifically accused a prominent traditional ruler, King A.J Turner and the lawmaker representing Ogbia Constituency 1 in the state House of Assembly, Mietama Obodor of anti-party activities.
The Chairman of the group, Obhioru Mitanoni, in a statement on Friday said that Turner and Obodor were sponsoring candidates in other political parties to challenge PDP candidates.
Mitanoni said following failures of their preferred aspirants to emerge victorious in the just-concluded PDP primaries, Turner and Obordor allegedly purchased nomination forms in other political parties for them.
He further alleged that the Chairman of the State Environmental Sanitation Authority, Chief Robert Enogha and former Special Adviser to the  Managing Director of the NDDC, George Turnah, were also involved in anti-party.
He claimed that Turnah, who lost in his bid to clinch the PDP ticket for Ogbia Federal Constituency was backing one Cleric Awudum for the Ogbia Constituency 2 seat in the State Assembly.
The statement said: “We are raising this alarm because of the emerging political development in Ogbia kingdom which is very disturbing. We want everyone to know that some people who call themselves leaders are working against our collective interest as a party.
“We want our people to know that the likes of King A.J Turner, Hon. Mieteme Obodo, Chief Robert Enogha Ayalla and Barr. George Turnah are all guilty of anti-party activities. These men bought forms for those who lost the PDP primaries to go to other parties to contest against our candidates.
“We are aware that for George Turnah the man he is sponsoring Cleric Awudum in Accord Party has not even resigned his appointment in the Niger Delta University. Everything is being done to ensure he wins the Ogbia constituency two seat. But we are ready for them”.
Mitanoni lambasted Jonathan for failing to call some of the leaders, who are his known allies, to order, adding that the ex-president was promoting political divisions in Ogbia.
He said Jonathan was the one who encouraged Chief Nimi Barigha-Amange to contest the Bayelsa East senatorial seat on the plattform of the ADC, having lost the PDP ticket to Blessing Ipigansin.
He wondered why the former President  would conspire against a party that brought him to the limelight.
He said the group decided to make a public statement and put the leadership of the party on notice to prevail on leaders to retrace their steps.
He described the leaders as disgruntled and blamed them for the gross underdevelopment of Ogbia.
  • PDP demands reconstitution of Osun Election Tribunal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded the immediate reconstitution of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

The party, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Thursday in Abuja, said that further delay would jeopardize the course of justice in the matter.

Ologbondiyan frowned at the disbanding of the panel by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachwa, saying it was a development which, if not quickly addressed, would send a very bad signal on the integrity of the judiciary.

He said that PDP’s submission was predicated on reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had been mounting pressure on the judiciary to deny the PDP justice in the determination of the Osun governorship election dispute at the tribunal.

Ologbondiyan said that in the lawful effort of PDP to reclaim the mandate, the party duly filed its petition on Tuesday Oct. 15, 2018 in accordance with Section 285 (6) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which prescribed that judgment must be delivered on or before 180 days.

The PDP spokesman said that while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was served, the APC and its candidate evaded service.

“Consequently, the PDP on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018 applied for substituted service, which was slated for hearing Thursday, Oct. 18, only to be informed that the panel has been disbanded on Wednesday without any reason and without providing a new panel to hear our matter.

“The President of the Court of Appeal should note that her disbanding of the panel without setting up a new one, goes to a deliberate attempt to prevent the PDP from serving the APC and its candidate and to meet the constitutional 180 days timeframe for the determination of the case at the tribunal.

“Election petition matters are sui generis, with specific timeframe allotted to various stages up to the final determination.

“The failure to set up a new panel to timeously hear our application for substituted service on APC and its candidate smacks of a shenanigan to deny our party full justice in the matter.

“The PDP, therefore, urges the President of the Court of Appeal not to bend to the proclivities of the APC and its candidate to bring the vouched reputation of the judiciary into a shameful disrepute, in their desperation to hold onto a stolen mandate.

“It is also imperative to state that the 2018 Osun Governorship election has become the interest of not only Nigerians but also the global community.

“As such, every institution that has a role in ensuring fairness and justice, particularly, the judiciary, must rise to its responsibility and not succumb to unlawful and anti-people predilections.”(NAN)

  • Edo PDP members seek cancellation of party primaries

Members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency have called for the cancellation of the party primaries in which one Lady Uwa Osunbor was declared winner.

The PDP members who protested to the state Secretariat of the party said the party primaries for Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde was won by Hon Etinosa Ogbeiwi.

They said the party primaries were conducted at Abudu in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State and was presided over by Hon. Tony Aziegbemin.

Spokesman for the protesters, Mr. Osazuwa Osakpolor Collins, said counting was on-going after the election when thugs disrupted the process.

Collins said Ogbeiwi was leading other aspirants before the disruption.

He said the people of the constituency would resist any attempt to superimpose any candidate on them.

Collins urged National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus to prevail on the State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Prbih not to   impose any candidate in the state.

“On October 3rd, 2018, primaries election was held in the above constituency at Abudu, presided over by Hon (Dr.) Tony Aziegbemin.

“Election commenced at about 12:30pm with Hon. Ogbeiwi Etinosa, Hon Uwamose Amadasun and Lady Uwa Osunbor as aspirants.

“Although no accreditation was done by the said presiding officer but the election and sorting out of ballot papers was done successfully.

“According to the presiding officer, 214 people voted, 3 votes voided, Uwamose Amadasun got 14 votes and Hon. Etinosa Ogbeiwi got 56 votes as at the time of counting why the rest ballot paper was with Hon (Dr.) Tony Aziegbemin the presiding officer when thugs came to disrupt the counting.

“At this point, everybody then ran for their lives. Since on the October 3, 2018, we are on the dark hence we are calling the state chairman and his Exco to declare Etinosa Ogbeiwi winner since it was only his votes that were counted”, he said.

“We of the above constituency shall resist any attempts by some bad elements to impose any candidate on the people of our constituency,” he said.

  • Senate in rowdy session over sitting arrangement

…APC, PDP Senators square up for a fight

For over 30 minutes Wednesday common sense took flight in the Senate.

Tempers rose. Political party affiliation rather than national interest took better part of senators.

It all started with a Point of Order raised by the Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan.

Akpan (PDP) specifically raised Order 43 which deals with personal explanation under which a senator is allowed to speak about himself and his constituents.

The Akwa Ibom North East lawmaker informed his colleagues about alleged looming crisis in Akwa Ibom State.

He claimed that the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state was allegedly plotting to unleash mayhem in the state that would possibly lead to the cancellation of the governorship election in 2019.

He further alleged that the aim of APC in the state was to instigate the cancellation of the governorship election in the state in order to deploy federal might to cause challenge of leadership in the state.

Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, ruled that the information given by Akpan was “well noted.”

Senator Godswill Akpabio (APC Akwa Ibom North West) who appeared to be agitated by Akpan’s information was angling where he sat to respond to what Akpan said.

Saraki asked Akpabio to go to his seat before he could be recognised to speak.

The Senate President said that Akpabio cannot speak from a seat that is not his.

Saraki added that there was no microphone were Akpabio sat.

Senate Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan reminded Saraki that there was no formal sitting arrangement in the chamber.

He said that Akpabio has the right to speak from where he was since the leadership of the chamber has failed to ensure formal sitting arrangement.

Lawan noted that he has raised the issue of a formal sitting arrangement with the Senate President without the expected result.

The Senate Leader who insisted that the chamber must be guided by its rules added that “we must have sitting arrangement.”

Lawan said that there had been movement across party lines with the possibility that more people would still move as they deem fit.

Saraki said that the Clerk to the Senate, Nelson Ayewo, was directed to allocate seats to senator.

The Senate President said that he believed that the new sitting arrangement would be completed next week.

As the exchange of words between Saraki and Lawan continued, Akpabio was visibly boiling where he sat.

He insisted on being allowed to speak. Saraki stood his ground that Akpabio should go to his seat before he could be allowed to speak.

Senator Dino Melaye came into the picture.

The Kogi West Senator attempted to shout Akpabio down.

Akpabio got irritated and was also shouting on top of his voice.

Confusion descended in the chamber as other senators joined the fray.

    Chamber decorum momentarily became casualty.

Attempt to restore decorum was made by Senator Emmanuel Paulker who reminded his colleagues that Akpan raised Order 43 (personal explanation) which did not give room for contribution or discussion by other senators.

The Bayelsa State senator added that by relying on Order 43, Akpabio was not entitled to respond to what Akpan said.

Attempts to calm frayed nerves failed.

Lawan moved to confer with Saraki apparently about the way forward.

Saraki explained that his position was that Akpabio should go to a seat where there is a microphone.

He said that Lawan was not fair to him by insinuating that he did not want Akpabio to speak.

Lawan said that APC must not be discriminated against on the floor of the Senate.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, raised Order 11(1)(2).

Ekweremadu said that every senator has the right to speak for himself and the people he represents.

Senates Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC) and Kabiru Marafa (APC) began to shout on top of their voices.

Ekweremadu was forced to sit down. He later explained that the rules of the chamber made provision for sitting arrangement.

Akpabio took the floor and said that the seat he sat was allocated to him by the Senate Clerk.

He added that the embarrassment he received was uncalled for.

Saraki disagreed and asked the Clerk to confirm if he allocated the seat to Akpabio.

The Clerk said that when Akpabio requested to sit on the seat, he informed him that there was no microphone on the seat.

Ayewo said that Akpabio insisted on sitting on the seat.

He said that he had no choice than to allow Akpabio to sit where he wanted.

After Ayewo’s explanation, Saraki gave Akpabio the floor to speak.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom State promptly demanded for an apology “for the unwarranted embarrassment I received today.”

He added that even the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) apologized to Nigerians.

He concluded that “until the Senate sitting arrangement is properly constituted I rest my case.”

That appeared to be the end of the matter until Ndume revived it by tendering apology for preventing Ekweremadu from speaking.

Ndume said that he has nothing against anybody.

Lawan also apologized for the altercation on the floor.

He said that his position should not be misinterpreted as if he took side with APC senators on the issue.

Lawan noted that they should always see themselves as one body working for the good of the country.

  • PDP names Saraki presidential campaign DG

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership has named Senate President Bukola Saraki as the director general of the party’s presidential campaign for the 2019 election.

The party also appointed campaign coordinators for the six geopolitical zones.

The zonal coordinators are: Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal (Northwest); Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwabo (Northeast); Benue State Governor Mr. Samuel Ortom (Northcentral); Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike (Southsouth); immediate past Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose (Southwest); and Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi (Southeast).

A former Special Duties Minister, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki will be in charge of legal matters and Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel takes charge of Fund Raising Committee.

  • 2019: APC, PDP engulfed in post-primary crisis

All is not well with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Ogun State, less than five months to the governorship election in the Gateway State. Correspondent ERNEST NWOKOLO reports that while the fringe parties appear set for the race to produce a successor to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the same thing cannot be said for the APC and the PDP.

The die is cast in Ogun State. The journey to next year’s general elections has began. While the fringe political parties appear set to participate in the race to produce a successor to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, barely five months to the governorship election, the same thing cannot be said for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

The fringe parties, including the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), the Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP), the Alliance for Democracy (AD), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have picked their governorship candidates, after seamless primaries. In contrast, the APC and the PDP are yet to settle for the candidates that will fly their flags at the election.

The two main political parties are still embroiled in crisis, because each of them conducted separate parallel congresses that produced two candidates for each of them.

In the primary conducted by the Muhammad Ndabawa-led electoral committee sent to the state by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC on October 3, Prince Dapo Abiodun was declared winner.

But after the contest, Ndabawa said Abiodun’s emergence as the APC governorship flag bearer would be “subject to ratification by the party’s NWC”. He added that he is not aware that parallel primary was conducted by a committee set up  by the Ibikunle Amosun-led state chapter. It was at the second primary that the governor’s preferred candidate, Adekunle Akinlade, emerged winner

In line with the provisions of the party’s guidelines and constitution, Ndabawa said his committee is the “authentic body constituted by the NWC” to conduct the exercise in Ogun State”.

Since emergence of two candidates, Abiodun and Akinlade,  for the same APC governorship ticket, it has been all confusion and uncertainty in the minds of the people, regarding who is the authentic candidate; as each camp insists that it is legitimate one.

Many stakeholders have accused Amosun of plunging the party into the current crisis, by single handedly picking Akinlade in a manner that shut out other contestants. The governor conrtinues to maintain that his man is the candidate of the party.

Spurred by the claim that he built the party from the scratch, the governor described those backing the other candidate (Abiodun) as “profiteers” seeking to reap from where they did not sow.

As at late last week, Amosun was still adamant that he would have his way and that Akinlade emains the APC candidate. But, like a bull, Abiodun entered the ring and routed the governor’s annointed candidate and thereby checked what many party members considered as the state chief executive’s inclination to capture everything for himself.

Prior to the arrival of Abiodun on the scene, the governor’s camp had bullied Senator Olamilekan Adeola, who had the backings of stakeholders from Ogun West for the plum job, to the extent that the latter had to shelve the idea of contesting for the Ogun governorship and return to Lagos, where he succeeded in retaining the ticket for the Lagos West senatorial race.

In bid to break what appears like a deadlock, Amosun has  been shuttling between Abeokuta and Abuja to influence the emergence of his candidate, by upturning the decision of the NWC panel on Abiodun.

It is not yet clear if the governor and Akinlade camp are having any success in that direction, as evidenced in the discordant tones emanating from there.

While on one hand, he kept flying the kite that they may toe the path of his predecessor,  Gbenga Daniel, who herded his supporters and anointed candidate, Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, to the Peoples Party of Nigeria(PPN) when the PDP denied them the ticket in favour of General Tunji Olurin in 2011. On the other hand, the camp also continued to assure its supporters that Akinlade’s name has been accepted as the party flag bearer.

At a stage, the Abiodun campaign organisation had to dispel the alleged falsehood, accusing a key member of Amosun administration of being the purveyor of it.

However, a chieftain of the party in Ogun Central, Bode Mustapha, said Dapo Abiodun assured that all is well with Abiodun and his candidacy.

Mustapha who said Abiodun remains the authentic candidate of APC in Ogun State, regretting that many who had no knowledge of the true situation of things are swallowing falsehood as if it is an opium that Akinlade is the party’s candidate.

The Egba chief gave the advice on Sunday at Iperu residence of Abiodun while addressing thousands of party members and supporters from the 20 local government areas during a solidarity meeting, noting that the ‘war’ is over and advised all party members to come together and rally round Abiodun for the greater task ahead; which is winning the governorship election.

Mustapha said the oil magnate and real estate operator from Ogun East senatorial district, would carry everybody, including the governor’s camp, along in the race to ensure the victory of the party.

He said it is only when they come together to secure the ultimate victory in 2019 that they would also have cause to celebrate the joy of electoral victory together.

However, it is hoped that the governor and his camp would look at the bigger picture and work for the unity and continued progress of the party.

The source said Governor Amosun may have weighed the options and concluded that pulling out of the APC won’t pay him as was the case with Daniel and his supporters.

But, while there appears to be a flicker of hope that the APC may resolve its post-primary crisis, a similar disagreement within the PDP remains intractable.

The Sikirulai Ogundele – led  group produced Ladi Adebutu  as sole candidate during its primary conducted by the Capt. Mike Williams Hart- led committee, a faction  loyal to Senator Buruji Kashamu  has  Adeleke Shittu from Ijebu-Igbo, in Ijebu North Local Government Area, as its  governorship candidate.

Not contented with having Shittu as its candidate, the faction loyal to Kashamu also secured  a Federal High Court order  sitting in Abeokuta,  directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Uche Secondus-led national leadership of the PDP to accept and process the list of candidates and delegates submitted to them by the Engr. Adebayo Dayo-led Ogun State Executive Committee of the PDP for the purpose of the 2019 general elections.

The implication of the court order is that the candidacy of Ladi Adebutu who emerged from the primary conducted for the Sikirulai Ogundele – led faction of PDP may be hanging in a balance.

But, the faction has since gone to same court, asking it to set aside orders directing INEC to accept and process only list of candidates and delegates authenticated by the Dayo-led executives for the 2019 elections, citing lack of service on defendants and lack of fair hearing.

The Counsel to Ogundele faction, Emeka Etiaba (SAN),  who filed the application on 10 grounds,  he argued that the orders (obtained by faction loyal to Kashamu) are “a nullity, having been obtained by false representation, concealment of facts and fraud,” leaving party members confused as to which of the factions is the authentic PDP governorship candidate for the 2019 election.

Besides, while the national body of PDP has expelled Senator Buruji Kashamu and Dayo who leds a faction of the PDP, making it politically illegal for them to conduct primary on behalf of the party, another court judgment recently declared their expulsion unlawful.

Certainly, these are not the best of times for Ogun APC and PDP, as it is not certain who will fly their flags in next year’s general elections, about five months to the governorship election.

  • Inauguration: Fayemi unfolds four-point agenda

     …TAKES OATH OF OFFICE

Fayemi who took the oath of office at about 12.25 pm said he will ensure that the payment of arrears of workers’ salaries is fully and firmly addressed as soon as possible.

  • Ondo Primaries: Protests persist in APC, PDP

A factional group within the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Akoko Division and leaders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Odigbo/Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo federal constituency are aggrieved over the outcome of the primaries conducted by the two major parties.

They alleged that the exercise was fraught with irregularities that called for outright cancellation, stressing that its members were schemed out of the affairs of the party in the state.

At a rally in Ikare-Akoko led by one of the aspirants, Sunday Fagbemi, the group noted that only popular candidates could win elections in the area.

It described the recent primary election in the state as an hoax, stressing that no election was done to warrant the emergence of any candidate.

Also, the PDP leaders in Odigbo/Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo petitioned the National Chairman, Uche Secondus over the emergence of Tomi Akinfemiwa as its candidate.

According to them, there was no election on October 3, to warrant the declaration of anybody as candidate.

They said out of 21 wards under the federal constituency, Osogbo has 11 wards, Ologbo has four wards and Ile-Oluji with six wards.

The aggrieved PDP members wondered how Ile-Oluji with six wards out of 21 purportedly conducted primary election that produced Akinfemiwa as winner without the involvement of other 15 wards.

It noted that it would not be possible for two local government areas to produce both Senatorial and Representatives candidates from the same party, calling for outright cancellation of the purported primary.

In the APC,the group loyal to the runner up in the 2016 APC governorship primary Olusegun Abraham lamented that its members were marginalised by the leadership of the ruling party in the state.

“Even outside government, he has been promoting education and welfare of people in several communities in Akoko Division especially Akoko Northeast.

He said even though he was prevented from clinching the party’s ticket, Fagbemi said he would remain in the APC as its loyal supporter.

APC’s spokesman, Alex kalejaye insisted that the primary held in the area was peaceful and devoid of irregularities.

He said some faceless group within the party were out to destabilise it’s affairs ahead of 2019 for their selfish interests.
