  • I was not in Abeokuta to endorse Atiku, says Kukah

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Mathew Hassan Kukah on Monday said he was not at the Hilltop mansion of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta last Wednesday to endorse the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Alh. Atiku Abubakar.

He said he only went to reconcile the former President and his hitherto estranged deputy.

He said he declined moves by Obasanjo to drag him into what he described as a “forest of politics.”

He insisted that his personal preoccupation was a” pastoral one, and not a political one.”

He said as a convener of National Peace Committee(NPC), he has a moral limit which he sticks to.

He said when it was clear that both President Obasanjo and Abubakar were on the verge of making peace, he alerted the Chairman of the NPC, General Abdusalam Abubakar and a former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Sir Emeka Anyaoku.

Kukah, who made the clarifications in a statement, said he was “a bit nervous, seeing that the circle was getting larger for something I thought was between three of us.”

He said he rejected moves by Obasanjo to drag him into a hall to go and say how he and others got to Abeokuta because it had a tone of politics.

He said he also skipped lunch after the session and avoided flying in the same aircraft with Atiku when he was offered a seat.

He said having been conversant with Catholic doctrine, he knew the limit of a priest in political engagement.

He said the widely circulated photograph of the reconciliation meeting was taken behind closed doors.

He explained that nothing could have prepared him for the way things finally shaped up.

He said theoretically and practically, he has come to know that peace making is a very risky business and often a thankless job.

The statement said: “I have deliberately made this explanatory note long because I think it is necessary that people make up their minds based on the facts, given my central role in the event.

“I note that Sheikh Gumi has already told his own side of the story. I feel obliged to state my own side so that Nigerians can have a clearer picture of my own involvement.

“ Sadly, I personally did not read President Obasanjo’s statement until two days later on the Internet since I was not physically in the hall.

“Although trying to reconcile President Obasanjo and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was something I had been working on intermittently in the last few years, nothing could have prepared me for the way things finally shaped up. My focus all along had been with President Obasanjo and I had never brought Alhaji Abubakar into what I was doing. Quite fortuitously, a chance meeting changed the tide in favour of reconciliation.

“Understandably, the pictures of the four of us (President Obasanjo, Alhaji Abubakar, Shaikh Gumi and I) literally lit up the social media and elicited divergent reactions from the general public.

“Although over 99% of the reactions that have come to me have been largely those of commendation, with people focusing, rightly, on the reconciliation, there have been others whose focus has been on an isolated development that had absolutely nothing to do with what I had in mind all these years, namely, the endorsement.

“I must say that I am eternally grateful to God that this reconciliation finally happened. The focus of attention has been on the endorsement of Alhaji Abubakar by President Obasanjo, a development that I can call the third leg of the process which I initiated. I am not sure of President Obasanjo’s other interlocutors after we agreed to meet leading to the participation of other actors and so, I will only clear the air on what I can take full responsibility for.”

Kukah gave insights into how he was contacted by Obasanjo and how he resisted being dragged into what he described as a “forest of politics.”

He added: “Let me state first that I am a priest of the Catholic Church and by the grace of God, a Bishop. I have more than a passing knowledge of our discipline and doctrine in matters relating to the role of a Catholic priest in political engagement. My doctoral thesis was on Religion and Politics in Nigeria. So, this is an area that I have written and spoken extensively about for over thirty years. I am therefore very clear about the boundaries, the slippery slopes and the contexts. Unlike Shaikh Gumi and Rev. Oyedepo who were invited to this event, I am a central actor. So let me explain what really happened.

“On Tuesday, October 9th, 2018 I had the honor of being the Guest Speaker for the annual Conference of the Four Square Gospel Church in Alagomeji, Lagos. (The Presidential Spokesman, Femi Adesina, a member of this Church had first invited me some years back but I could not honour the invitation). President Obasanjo was the Chairman of the occasion.

“ At the end of the lecture, he indicated that he would have to leave because he had a scheduled meeting. I told him I needed to see him briefly and he obliged. I brought up again the issue of what he thought of his reconciliation with Alhaji Atiku.

“My last discussion with him this year was either January or February. His response was still negative and he told me what he later told the media. I reminded him that I was not interested in the politics of reconciliation but the spiritual angle.

“ After all, I said to him, ‘as a Christian, this is an important thing for you to do’. He was quiet and then said he would speak with me later that evening on his final decision. We parted, he to his car and I returned to the Church to end the event.

“At about 9pm the same Tuesday, he called to say that he had thought over the issues I had raised and finally decided to accept my suggestion and that yes, he would be happy to reconcile with Alhaji Abubakar. When did he think we could meet then, I asked him? He said he would look at his diary and get back to me later.

“Then, just before 11pm the same Tuesday, I received another call from him saying his diary was full, that the earliest date for him was October 21st. I accepted happily and told him that I would try and reach Alhaji Abubakar either directly, or through his aides to convey the news.

“My initial intention had been to return to Abuja that same evening from Lagos, but my hosts at the Four Square Gospel had suggested that I should get some rest. Next morning, Wednesday October 10th, after I had finished celebrating the Holy Mass, I received a call from President Obasanjo: ‘Bishop, listen, I have changed my mind’. My heart nearly sank, but before I could ask why, he said: ‘Let us do it tomorrow if you can reach Atiku. I am going to deliver a lecture in Ife and will be back home before 1pm. “So, tell him to come at 1pm’. I started frantic efforts to reach Alhaji Atiku without luck. I reached one of his aides, Paul Ibe, and asked him to please let him know I am trying to reach him. Finally, at about 1pm, I received a call from him. I told him what had happened with President Obasanjo. He agreed and said he would be in Abeokuta for 1pm on Thursday.

“I got back to my hosts, the Four Square Gospel Church to tell them about the change in my travelling plans especially as I had no car to take me to Abeokuta.

“ I didn’t want to ask President Obasanjo’s people to send me a vehicle because I believed I needed a leeway of independence and trust. My hosts were exceedingly gracious in making a vehicle available, a driver and an aide to take me to Abeokuta.”
Kukah admitted that Obasanjo expanded the scope of the session beyond what he anticipated.

He said the development made him to walk up to the former President to ask for the protocol for the meeting.

He said: “ Earlier that morning, President Obasanjo had called me a second time and told me that he wanted Alhaji Abubakar to come with the Chairman of the PDP, and two or three others. He also told me he had also invited both Shaikh Gumi and Rev. Oyedepo. This was welcome news- Rev. Oyedepo is a kinsman of his, and the presence of Shaikh Gumi made sense. I was a bit nervous, seeing that the circle was getting larger for something I thought was between three of us.

“I arrived Abeokuta about 12.15pm ahead of both President Obasanjo and Alhaji Abubakar and his team. Alhaji Abubakar and his team arrived, and then I saw more and more people coming in. “I saw familiar faces of different people who turned out to be the leaders of Afenifere. All these years, whenever I brought up this matter of reconciliation, my idea has always been for the three of us to sit down together. I still believed that the meeting would be between the two of them and the three religious leaders.”

Kukah said he rejected moves by Obasanjo to drag him into a hall to go and say how he and others got to Abeokuta because it had a tone of politics.

He added: “When President Obasanjo appeared, I walked up to him and said I wanted to know the protocol for the meeting. He suggested that we would meet in a hall and that I should say a few words about how we got here.

“ I declined because it seemed again that at this point, we were in small forest of politics and I had no wish to be caught in it. I was happy that what I wanted to achieve had been achieved, namely, getting these two men to put the past behind them.

“My personal preoccupation was a pastoral one, and not a political one. I was uncomfortable with this and I decided to make my position clear. I offered a different proposal to help us sift the moral grain from the chaff of politics via a three-step process so as to insulate the three of us from the political fallout.

“I proposed that the first step would be for he and Alhaji Abubakar to sit down behind closed doors, sort out their issues and then the next step would be for both Sheikh Gumi and I to go in and listen to the two of them as Rev. Oyedepo had not arrived.

“After that, I said, they could continue with the third phase which from what I could see was high wire politics and I had no wish to be caught in the web. After they both finished their brief meeting, Sheikh Gumi and I went in and sat down with the two of them.

“ We had some small briefing and then both of us spoke briefly on what they had done, encouraging them to ensure that this reconciliation holds. I even said jokingly that I am a Catholic priest and our marriage vows are indissoluble! After that, we prayed and then took what has now become the famous photograph behind closed doors.

“At this point, I felt that my spiritual duties had been achieved and I was prepared to maintain my independence. Sheikh Gumi and I shook hands and although I was hungry and food was being laid out, I skipped lunch. I quietly let myself out by the side door, got into the Four Square Gospel car and we drove off to Lagos. Despite the dread of Lagos traffic and the disruption of flights at the Airport in Lagos, I had declined the offer of a seat in the Aircrafts which had flown them to Abeokuta.

“ Although flying with them was the best (and most convenient) assurance I had of getting to Abuja in time for a speaking engagement at an event with the Sultan and Cardinal Onaiyekan for 9am the next day, it was necessary to ensure that I took no favours from any of the two parties.

“I was not in Abeokuta to endorse Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party. I perfectly understand the feelings of many of my friends and members of the opposition who believe that I travelled with Alhaji Abubakar and his team to attend his endorsement by President Obasanjo, but I reiterate that this was not the case.

“All the bills for my travel were settled by the Four Square Gospel hosts for the earlier dated programme who had bought my tickets, booked accommodation for me and took care to get me to the airport for my flight to Abuja and Sokoto.

“I am a strong believer in a peaceful and united Nigeria, ideals for which I have striven and served my entire adult life as a thinker and a priest. My instincts for reconciliation and peace were sharpened during my involvement and experience with the Oputa Panel. When the Generals refused to respond to the invitation of Oputa Panel, I personally undertook to visit both General Babangida and Buhari (he was not at home) at a time that today’s latter day Buharists were asking the Panel to compel them to come or risk being blacked out of national life. Objective-minded people will remember that back in 2001, when the Christian community and many of President Buhari’s opponents claimed that General Buhari had said that Muslims should vote only for Muslims, many people in the Christian community were disappointed that I wrote a long article to explain the context of what he had said after speaking with the General. His party, the ANPP later used part of my article for their 2003 campaigns! My faith and experience have taught me to learn to suspend judgment till I have heard both sides of a story, no matter what.

“I hope that this clarification helps to allay the concerns of those who may have seen all of these in a different light. Many minds will remain set no matter the reasonableness of my comments here, and this is to be expected- one cannot please everyone. This is why it is often best to seek to please only one’s own conscience, and here, mine is very clear.

“I have been involved in a few behind-the-scene shuttle diplomacy for years, largely on my own initiative, taking advantage of my knowledge of those engaged in the conflict or at the invitation of third parties. Some have succeeded and some have not. As priest, it is not in my place to publicize what we have achieved.

“I am the Convener of the National Peace Committee. This alone is enough to place a moral boundary which I am bound to respect. The NPC able to accomplish much because of trust and that is not what I can treat lightly. When it became clear that both President Obasanjo and Abubakar were on the verge of making peace, I alerted the Chairman of the NPC, General Abdusalam. Since I happen to be in Lagos, I drove to the Ikoyi home of Chief Emeka Anyaoku and alerted him. I spoke to my Metropolitan, the Archbishop of Kaduna, Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso. All in all, everyone believed this was a very good move if we could achieve it. None of us imagined the third phase of this meeting.

“Both theoretically and practically, I have come to know that peace making is a very risky business and often a thankless job. I recall listening to the late Kofi Anan speak about his on two different occasions. Anyone involved in peace making from domestic quarrels to larger battles, must be ready for the good, the bad and the ugly.

“In the end, we must wear the shoes of the long distance runner, believing and trusting that the truth never ever sinks to the bottom of the sea. The truth will always have a stubborn way of defying the hostile elements and popping up at the right time, no matter how long it takes.”
Kukah took time to explain that he was not in any way involved in politics.

He said: “I perfectly understand that with Alhaji Abubakar having just picked up the Presidential ticket of his Party, without providing this context, definitely, I can appreciate why many people will have a lot of anxieties. They will definitely be right to question my neutrality.

“ However, I have far too many friends across party lines for me to openly endorse one candidate or party against the other. It will be against the principles of the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church which regulates our public life in the political space. The President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference has signed a statement to the effect that no altar of the Catholic Church must ever be open to any politician, something we have all taken seriously. I therefore hope that this clarification helps those whose minds are open.

“I am thankful to God and quite pleased that this reconciliation took place and that I was a small instrument in making it happen. However, I am sorry that it has been given a different colouration and doubts to many people. Its timing was purely fortuitous and purely circumstantial not a contrivance. Personally, I will never relent in the very urgent task of making peace and reconciliation across the spectrum of our country.”

  • PDP: Makarfi, Hunkuyi in fierce battle over senatorial slot

Ex-Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi is now seeking the senatorial ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Kaduna North having failed to secure the party’s presidential nomination.

Contending the ticket with him are Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi who, himself  failed to secure the PDP’s governorship ticket  and  Ahmad Rufai Shehu (Ubale) the only PDP member who initially obtained the party’s nomination form.

Shehu has approached the Federal High Court, Abuja to restrain the party from taking the ticket away from him.

He asked the court on Friday to prevail on PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to stop the party from  fielding  either Makarfi or Hunkuyi.

According to investigation, both Makarfi and Hunkuyi are banking on the Kaduna North Senatorial ticket as their Plan B.

Following the loss of presidential ticket, some aspirants including the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, Governor Aminu Tambuwal, were allowed to retain their elective offices.

But Hunkuyi has vowed not to concede Kaduna North Senatorial ticket to Makarfi.

A top PDP source said: “We have a fresh challenge at hand in Kaduna PDP. There is an ongoing battle between former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi and his long time political enemy, Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi over the party’s senatorial slot for the Kaduna North Senatorial District where the duo hailed from.

“Both Makarfi and Hunkuyi (who is a serving Senator) have lost out in the recently concluded PDP presidential and governorship primaries in Kaduna State.

“Makarfi’s preferred aspirant in the Kaduna Governorship Primary, Isa Ashiru defeated Hunkuyi who defected to the PDP from All Progressives Congress (APC) after a political battle with Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai.

“Makarfi, Hunkuyi and Ashiru are from the same federal constituency which is Kudan/Makarfi.

“The only party member, Ahmad Rufai Shehu with the senatorial form has been screened and waiting for the primaries, is from Zaria LGA. In fact, going by INEC deadline, Shehu is the PDP’s automatic candidate for Kaduna North Senatorial District.”

Another source said the “PDP is also split on Kaduna North Senatorial District ticket.

“While the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus  is backing Makarfi (who was his predecessor). Those in Hunkuyi’s camp are claiming that they have the support of the National Leader of the party. Dr. Bukola Saraki.

“Our leaders are insisting that Makarfi should be honoured for stabilizing the party. The PDP governors also failed to fulfil their promise to compensate Makarfi for doing a yeoman’s job in giving PDP a second chance to survive again.

“These leaders said the conditions Hunkuyi gave for defecting from APC to PDP were to contest only for governorship. They said he can’t come home with a story of automatic senatorial ticket.

But Ahmad Rufai Shehu (Ubale), who was the only party member who obtained the nomination form for Kaduna North Senatorial District, filed an application on Friday at the Federal High Court, Abuja seeking to restrain PDP and INEC from nominating any other candidate.

He asked the court for an “order of injunction restraining PDP and INEC from fielding and sponsoring Hunkuyi and Makarfi or any other candidate for the 2019 Kaduna North Senatorial District seat without conducting primary election.

He said: “That the primaries for the Senatorial seat were scheduled to take place on October 2, 2018 but the election committee postponed same without any justification.

“That the primary elections in the other two senatorial districts of Kaduna State have been conducted. However it is only Kaduna North Senatorial District that the primary has not been conducted.

“I wrote a letter to the Chairman Election Petition Committee of PDP, Kaduna State on October 6 and submitted it on the 8th of October.

“I have not received any response from the Chairman Election Petition Committee of PDP, Kaduna State with respect to the aforesaid letter.”

He urged the court to declare as follows:

*A declaration that the claimant having purchased Nomination Form for Senatorial Primary Election of PDP for Kaduna North Senatorial seat (Zone 1) and has satisfied all the legal requirements to contest, is entitled to participate in the primary election of the party.

*A declaration that the claimant having completed and complied with every requirement of law and qualified to contest the primary for Kaduna North District is entitled to participate in the primary election of the party.

*An order that any act of 1st (PDP) and 2nd (INEC) defendants in fielding and sponsoring the 3rd (Hunkuyi) and 4th (Makarfi) defendants and / or any candidate without duly conducted primary for the senatorial seat is invalid and illegal to that effect.

*An order of injunction restraining the defendants(PDP, INEC, Hunkuyi and Makarfi) either  by themselves, agents, privies, assigns, authorized representatives or howsoever described from fielding and sponsoring Hunkuyi and Makarfi and / or any other candidate for the  2019 Senatorial seat of Zone 1(Kaduna North) in Kaduna State without conducting primary election.

*An order of mandatory injunction directing the 1st Defendant(PDP) to conduct primary election for the Senatorial Seat of Zone 1, Kaduna State.

  • PDP rejects travel ban on 50 high-profile Nigerians

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the placement of travelling restrictions on 50 high-profile Nigerians.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party gave the rejection in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, on Saturday in Abuja.

Ologbondiyan described the restriction as a ‘draconian step’ clearly targeted at members of the opposition parties, business community, religious leaders, former political leaders and traditional rulers, perceived to be averse to President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid.

He added that the ‘decree’ was a direct clampdown on the country’s democratic order and an overthrow of rights of citizenry as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“We hope this is not a ploy to harm certain eminent Nigerians on the claims of resisting travel restrictions.

“The whole world can now see how fascism is fast taking over our democracy and judicial system and how the Buhari administration, by fiat, has directly ordered that citizens be secretly trailed.

“Their movements and financial transactions are restricted by government agencies, without recourse to due process of the law,” he said.

Ologbondiyan said that the Presidency had gone into panic mode since the popular emergence of Atiku Abubakar as PDP presidential candidate and the spontaneous jubilation his emergence evoked across the country.

He said that the party maintained that the resort to total clampdown on the opposition and PDP supporters would be totally unacceptable.

“What this means is that all Nigerians, particularly opposition members, members of the business community and religious leaders have become endangered and stand the risk of state violence under the APC administration,” he said.

Ologbondiyan alerted the international community to take note should any harm befall any opposition leader, key members of the business community and religious leaders across the country, as Nigerians march towards the 2019 general elections.

NAN recalls that Buhari had mandated the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to implement the Executive Order 6 (EO6) in full force following the instant judicial affirmation of the constitutionality and legality of the order.

According to a statement issued by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President, Media and Publicity, a number of enforcement procedures were currently in place.

Shehu disclosed that the Nigeria Immigration Service and other security agencies had placed no fewer than 50 high profile persons directly affected by EO6 on watch-list.

They are to be restricted from leaving the country pending the determination of their cases.

He added that EO6 was specifically directed to relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that all assets within a minimum value of N50 million or equivalent, subject to investigation or litigation are protected from dissipation by employing all available lawful means, pending the final determination of any corruption-related matter.

“The Buhari administration reassures all well-meaning and patriotic Nigerians of its commitment to the fight against corruption, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the general principles of the Rule of Law.

“Accordingly, this administration will uphold the rule of law in all its actions and the right of citizens would be protected as guaranteed by the Constitution,” he said. (NAN)

  • Obasanjo lobbying US for entry visa for Atiku, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo has commenced moves to make the United States government with it’s alleged travel ban on PDP Presidential candidate and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

In a statement signed by the Acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, the party said it has credible information that Obasanjo has started lobbying the US government to issue Atiku with an entry visa.

The statement reads “we have come across credible reports that former President Olusegun Obasanjo has made moves to secure United States entry visa for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alh. Atiku Abubakar, whose candidacy he endorsed on Thursday.

“It is learnt that that the former President who during and after leaving office insisted on Atiku’s unsuitability to govern Nigeria based on his knowledge of the latter’s extensive corrupt practices while he served as Vice President, is lobbying US authorities to withdraw the ban reportedly placed on Atiku from entering the United States following a 2005 $500,000 bribery scandal that involved Atiku, his fourth wife, Jennifer and former United States Congressman, William Jefferson.

“Recall that the former president while in office had deployed enormous resources of the country on a global dragnet coordinated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in getting Atiku prosecuted for corrupt enrichment and money laundering.

“A report by the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, chaired by Senator Carl Levin reported that Atiku used offshore companies to siphon millions of dollars to his fourth wife in the United States, Jennifer while still the vice president of Nigeria between 2000 and 2008.

“The report further stated that then President Bush had on the strength of his report, barred Atiku and other corrupt politically exposed persons from being issued visa to the United States, a reason for which he has been unable to travel to the United States till date.

“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s intervention in Alh.Abubakar Atiku’s ban from the United States of America is evidence of Obasanjo’s legendary hypocrisy and self-serving interest in national affairs.

  • Crisis rocks PDP over Lagos Central senatorial ticket

A crisis is brewing in the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the Lagos Central senatorial ticket for next year’s election.

Four aspirants are jostling for the ticket. They are: Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, a successful estate surveyor/valuer who is also the General Secretary of Lagos Elders Council; Mr. Kolawole Vaughan and two others.

There are agitations over an unpopular aspirant, whose name was said to have been illegally submitted to the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The aspirant is believed to be least popular, least competent and least credible for the ticket.

In a letter, dated October 8, to the party’s National Chairman, Uche Secondus, in Abuja, and its state chairman in Ikeja, the party’s local government chairmen in the senatorial district said Chief Adesunbo David Onitiri’s name was forwarded as the consensus candidate for the seat.

Titled: Selection Of Chief Adesunbo David Onitiri As Consensus Candidate For Lagos Central Senatorial, the letter reads: “We, the undersigned leaders in Lagos Central Senatorial District, wish to inform you that we have unanimously selected Chief Adesunbo David Onitiri as the consensus candidate for the Lagos Central Senatorial District.

“After proper review of the shoddy election process, which was poorly organised and failed two attempts at the primary, the leaders in the Lagos Central took this decision in view of our readiness to present our candidate for the general election in 2019.

“We have reviewed the credentials of the four aspirants as regards their integrity. We have come to the conclusion that Chief Onitiri is the most qualified, most credible and most competent. We shall be grateful for your kind consideration and positive action on our request.”

The letter was jointly signed by Dr Amos Fawole, Alhaji Alfa Adeoye (Chairman, Surulere Local Government Area), Mr Kehinde Fasasi (Chairman, Eti-Osa), Mr. Rotimi Kujore, Mr. Malomo (State Exco), Mr. Mike Kolawole (Vice Chairman, Apapa) and Ajisefini Fatai (Acting Chairman, Apapa).

Lagos Central Leaders who signed the letter include Senator Kofo Bucknor-Akerele, Board of Trustees (BoT) Member, Lagos and Mr. Adeniyi Adams, State Youth Leader.

The party leaders noted that if the PDP desires to win in Lagos, it should field credible, popular and electorally valuable candidates.

  • PDP, Atiku can’t avoid corruption scrutiny, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) cannot run away from the issues of corruption and integrity of its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Reacting to a statement by the PDP  Acting National Publicity Secretary Yekini Nabena said the former Vice President grapples with many corruption indictments, saying “this is a fact and reality he needs to deal with and come clean about.”

The APC spokesman said the PDP could not be simplistic in its attempt to wish away the issue of the integrity of candidates seeking elections into positions.

The statement said: “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  Kola Ologbondiyan released a statement accusing the senior officials of the All Progressives Congress-led administration of “deliberate efforts to impugn on the character” of the PDP presidential candidate, Alh. Atiku Abubakar.

“The PDP’s assertion particularly coming from its spokesperson is ironic and laughable, given the fact that Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan as an editor with one of the national newspapers in fact, unearthed the Special Audit/Forensic Investigation of Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) which indicted Alh. Atiku Abubakar, then Vice President for the mismanagement of the Fund.

“The PDP spokesperson in his published report disclosed that from 1999 to 2006, Atiku’s approval for the release of $20m from the treasury and subsequent placement in Trans International Bank without appropriation and approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) was illegal and amounted to abuse of office.

“There are no lies here. Alh. Atiku Abubakar grapples with several other corruption indictments. This is a fact and reality he needs to deal with and come clean about.

“The PDP cannot be simplistic and attempt to wish away the issue of the integrity of candidates seeking elections into positions at all levels, particularly as 2019 approaches.

“We reiterate our position that the Nigerian electorate must have that opportunity to choose from candidates that can pass the integrity and anti-corruption test. The character of office holders we elect into public offices is important as our very progress and development as a country depends on it.

”When the choice is to be made, the electorate have the option of a proven and decent presidential candidate who is putting the people first and on the other hand a racketeer who will readily mortgage the country commonwealth to personal coffers and cronies.”

  • PDP can’t retain power in Gombe, says Gwamna

The former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Gombe State, Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, has promised to work for the victory of  President Muhammad Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya in next year’s elections.

Speaking to reporters in Gombe Tuesday, Dr. Jamil said: “We are going to work tirelessly and assiduously to ensure that president Muhammad Buhari wins the 2019 elections and the candidate of the APC in Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya will become the next governor of Gombe state.”

Jamilu, who defected to APC with a large crowd of followers in Gombe, reiterated that he is not seeking the governorship of the state for his personal gains rather for the development of the young state and its people.

He said: “I am not seeking leadership or position of governorship for the sake of becoming the governor of Gombe state but I am doing that because the good people Gombe state have called on me to do so and I have answered to their calls.

“I am not seeking election for myself iam seeking election for the sake of development, my people and as such I shall continue to make myself available to render my services to my people the good people of Gombe state, wherever and in whatever capacity I found myself. APC is our new home and we are ready to collaborate or partner with any good person or organizations that have something good for our people. That we vowed to do and that we shall do with the last blood in our vessels.”

According to the Sarduanan Gombe, “Having considered what transpired during the just concluded PD gubernatorial primaries that took place at the banquet hall of the Gombe State government house,” I felt that Gombe state will not be adequately, justifiably and judiciously be represented by the PDP in the state therefore, I belief we have to seek an alternative of that will represents the aspirations of the good people of the state.”

He said the noble aspirations he represent cannot be realised under the PDP because of the actions of the governor and his likes, which he said have clearly demonstrated that PDP as a party will not guaranty the actualization of the dreams of the good people of Gombe state.

“Having consulted with my people, the good people of Gombe state, we have come to the inevitable conclusion to leave the PDP and decamp to the APC in order to actualize our dreams of taking Gombe to the promise land. And having carefully reviewed our position, we felt that the aspirations of the good people of Gombe state being a young state and with all the hopes of a young state will be best represented by the APC. I therefore, declared that as from this moment I and all my followers wherever they are in Gombe state will be members of the All progressives congress (APC).

  • Court voids PDP’s expulsion of Kashamu, Ogun Chair

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Apo, Abuja has set aside the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) expulsion of Senator Buruji Kashamu (Ogun East) and Ogun State Chairman of the party, Engr Adebayo Dayo.

Justice Valentine Ashi, in a ruling on Wednesday, held that purported expulsion was unlawful because it was done in flagrant disobedience of a subsisting order of the court made on December 7, 2017, which was restated on January 9, 2018, directing parties not to do anything to jeopardise the hearing of the pending case.

Justice Ashi, who nullified the expulsion, also set aside the PDP’s letter, dated August 1, 2018 conveying the expulsion to Kashamu and Dayo.
The judge ordered PDP’s Chairman, Uche Secondus to, within 48 hours of his receipt of the court order, to show cause why the court’s disciplinary measure should not be deployed against him for aiding his party to violate a valid court order.

  • Fayose not wanted in our party, says Ekiti APC

PDP GROUP: FAYOSE SHOULD NOT TRADE OLUSOLA’S ‘MANDATE’ WITH APC

Less than twenty four hours after he threatened to leave the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has said Governor Ayo Fayose is not wanted in its fold.

The state APC Chairman, Mr. Paul Omotoso and party chairmen in all wards in Irepodun/Ifelodun local government, where the governor hails from and all wards in Ado-Ekiti, where he lives and has businesses that he is not welcomed in the party.

The party chieftains have told the governor to forget his plans to dump PDP to join APC “until he clears himself of several criminal cases hanging on his neck.”

The warning came on the heels of reports that Fayose had concluded plans to dump PDP following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the PDP presidential candidate as against Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal who was supported by Fayose.

In a statement on Tuesday by the APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ade Ajayi, said the party leaders advised the outgoing governor to conclude his court cases bordering on sundry alleged crimes before contemplating to join APC.

He said: “We want to prove to the world that APC will not provide sanctuary for criminal suspects, political prostitutes and lepers. We will never admit such character to this party and we advise Fayose to play his politics of destruction somewhere else.

“Fayose’s criminal prosecution on 2005 poultry project fraud resumes on November 4, 2018. Fayose cannot turn Ekiti APC to a haven and sanctuary for criminal suspects and we advise him to forget any plan to smear Ekiti APC with criminal records.”

In a statement, Omotoso told Fayose that APC “is a political party bounded by common ideals of integrity, openness, discipline and commitment to common goal of progressive governance, which Fayose does not possess or believe as can be seen from his style of politics and governance”.

He added: “Fayose over the years abused, disrespected and openly denigrated President Muhammadu Buhari, the leader of our party who is also the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Fayose is coming to destroy our party and ensure President Buhari does not get a second term in 2019 and we won’t allow Fayose’s evil plan to materialise”.

Omotoso vowed that on no account would Fayose be admitted into the APC.

He advised Fayose to look elsewhere for a political party that he will destroy after destroying three national political parties when he found it difficult to control the parties.

“Fayose said many times that he would destroy APC. He destroyed Labour Party (LP), All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) People’s Progressive
Alliance (PPA) and at a time he also destroyed PDP before his current activities that led to the present sorry state of PDP in Ekiti State.

“APC is looking for builders and not destroyers in its fold. We will not accept this destroyer in our great party APC and we advise Fayose
to look elsewhere towards his promoters outside the state so that he can destroy the cohesion of the party in the backyards of those promoters.”

He warned all ward chairmen where Fayose lives and runs his businesses against accepting him to the party.

He added: “Our party is not a sanctuary for criminal suspects, political lepers and serial destroyers of the parties they once belonged.

“We hereby warn ward chairmen where Fayose lives or runs his business against admitting him to our great party.

“We hereby state clearly that no ward chairman must open talks with Fayose until such ward chairman clears with the party leadership at the state level.”

Meanwhile, an interest group in Ekiti PDP, Bring Back our Mandate (BBOM) has warned Fayose against negotiating what it called “the mandate given to Prof Kolapo Olusola by the Ekiti electorate with the ruling APC as a soft landing following his latest threat to leave the PDP.”

BBOM in a statement on Tuesday by its Coordinator, Gbenga Ogedengbe, said that the mandate given to Olusola by Ekiti PDP in the last governorship election in the state is not for sales and that the mandate of the people which he claimed was stolen by the APC will be retrieved at the election petition tribunal.

The statement read: “It is important to note that Fayose’s deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka, who doubled as the PDP candidate in July 18, 2018 Ekiti governorship election is currently seeking judicial redress at the Ekiti election petition tribunal holding in Abuja over series of alleged irregularities in the conduct of the poll which returned Dr Kayode Fayemi of the APC as the governor-elect.

“We are not unaware of Governor Ayodele Fayose romance with the APC and his several unrealistic demands with the aim of paving way for a make believe excuse that would enable him save his face while he goes by the way of Akpabio.

“Fayose is afraid of being persecuted by APC attack dogs after leaving office. While wishing the outgoing Ekiti governor a safe trip to APC we are warning APC to avoid being fooled by Fayose as any promise to stop or frustrate the ongoing tribunal by Fayose is simply an empty promise.

“Fayose cannot give what he doesn’t have. The process of retrieving Eleka’s mandate from APC is beyond Fayose. Fayose can’t sell or negotiate with what does not belong to him.”
