  • 2019: Shekarau joins race for PDP’s presidential ticket

Former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has signified his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2019 general elections under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Shekarau, who is also the immediate past Minister of Education, said in a letter made available to newsmen on Monday, that his decision to seek for PDP’s presidential ticket was informed by clarion calls from Nigerians and after wide consultations.

“As you may be aware, for quite some time now, since after the 2015 general elections, there have been various calls made by individuals and groups from many quarters, nationwide, urging my humble candidature for the contest of the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the next general elections, due in 2019.

“I strongly believe that the people are doing so out of their conviction of contentment and satisfaction based upon the modest successes recorded while I served as the Governor of Kano State (2003 to 2011), and also as a Minister of Education (July 2014 – May 2015).

“In response to these calls, and in view of the seeming intricacies and the boundless complexities involved in such a national assignment, I have consulted across the geopolitical zones and different interest groups, who examined and appraised the issue and advised me accordingly.

“I am pleased to say, based on these wide consultations, that I am better informed and convinced that participating in the democratic process of serving humanity goes beyond party affiliations/boundaries, and also beyond just winning an election.

“I have therefore decided to accept the clarion calls, and will in due course and in accordance with the guidelines of my party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), offer my humble self for the contest of the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during the forthcoming 2019 general elections,” Shekarau said.

With the declaration, Shekarau had joined the likes of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Ibrahim  Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State, former Kaduna State governor and Ahmed Makarfi and others  who were reportedly seeking PDP’s presidential ticket.

  • Ekiti PDP Chief abducted, kidnappers demand N30m ransom

Unknown gunmen have kidnapped the Financial Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Mr. Kayode Oni.

Oni was reportedly seized at a location between Efon and Erio at about 4.30 pm on Saturday on his way back to Aramoko, headquarters of Ekiti West Local Government Area.
He was said to be returning from Efon where he officiated in the PDP local government Congress.

Ekiti PDP spokesman, Mr Jackson Adebayo, disclosed to reporters on Sunday that the kidnappers had established contact with the
victim’s wife and younger brother and demanded a sum of N30 million as ransom.

He revealed that Oni, who was in his car alongside his daughter and grandson, was waylaid by his captors and whisked to an unknown destination.

According to him, only Adebayo was taken away to the kidnappers’ hideout leaving behind other occupants of the vehicle.

Adebayo said: “He went to conduct our Local Government Congress in Efon Alaaye and was abducted while returning to Aramoko.

“The family had been contacted , but they told the abductors that even the entire family can’t raise N1m and they were requesting for a staggering sum of N30m to secure his freedom.

“The family told us reliably that they have made formal complaint at the police station in Efon about the situation and they promised to take actions.

“Our party is not resting as well. We are making contact to ensure that his safety is guaranteed in the kidnappers’ den.”

The State Police Command was yet to make official pronouncement on the incident at time of filing this report.

  • PDP, Obaseki clash over assault on Senator

    • Police beef up security at Urhoghide’s residence

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki are up in arms over last Friday’s assault on Senator Matthew Urhoghide (Edo South) at Benin airport.

Urhoghide escaped being mobbed at the airport by angry youths who removed his cap for moving the motion for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over the purchase of 12 Tucano aircraft without approval from the National Assembly.

The party accused the governor of sponsoring the attack, saying the youths were members of the APC kitted and recruited from the Edo Government House.

Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikhare, in a statement alleged: “In the presence of the governor, these thugs kitted in black by Edo state government, attacked Senator Matthew Urhoghide, a former state woman leader and our youth leader.

“After observing and supervising the attack with a smirk on his face, the governor, Godwin Obaseki, climbed into his Jeep and gave a fist pump in approval and solidarity with his thugs for a mission accomplished.

“This act is another evidence of the disdain and intolerance with which the APC government views the legislature and opposition voices.

“Edo PDP will send a report of this ugly incident to the police for investigation and necessary action.”

The Senator, who addressed reporters yesterday in his residence, recounted what transpired at the airport.

According to him: “They have promised to deal with me. But I obeyed the Police Commissioner. I remained where I was until the Governor came.

“We were walking side by side talking when a boy hit my head and the Governor walked away.

“Before I left Abuja, I knew what was happening and the person responsible for it.

“I called him to tell him that it was unnecessary but he didn’t pick his calls.

“It would be cowardice for me to abort the journey. I wanted to see what will happen and they displayed their thuggery. I am not cowed by it.”

The Senator accused the Chief of Staff to Obaseki, Taiwo Akerele, as responsible for mobilisation of thugs that attacked him.

But Akerele denied the allegation, saying he had nothing to do with the incident.

The Chief of Staff said he could not have concerned himself with a senator from Edo South when he hails from Edo North.

“It was obvious to the public that the people that protested are from Edo South. I am not from Edo South. Am I from Edo South?

“I have nothing to do with him. I have no business with me. He should go and ask him people who protested from Edo South.”

Special Adviser to Governor Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said it was treacherous for the PDP to link Governor Obaseki to the clash at the airport.

Osagie said it was unfortunate the party would attempt to drag the governor into dirty politics after witnessing the governor’s commitment to the dictates of law and order.

He described as laughable the PDP’s threat to report the incident to the Police, as the Commissioner of Police witnessed the incident and was instrumental in placating the two parties.

According to him: “How does report of the clash widely reported by the media, connect the governor to the incident?

“It is unfortunate that Nehikhare has decided to paint a different reality by manufacturing his own facts.

“And this is understandable because the only job he has is being a Publicity Secretary of a party that is almost non-existent in Edo State.”

The Edo State Police Command immediately beefed up security around the Senator’s Benin residence yesterday.

When our correspondent visited the residence, two police vans were stationed outside with heavily armed operatives outside.

Party supporters were at the residence to show solidarity with Urhoghide.

Urhoghide said he does not have any regret for moving the motion on the floor of the Senate.

He stated it was a shame on Nigeria for a boy to hit a serving senator.

“”If this game is not played along the direction that some people want it, then they see you as a deviant.

“That is what you saw yesterday, asking a riffraff, a boy of no consequence to lay his hands on me, an elected representative of the people, a serving Senator, it is a shame on this country.”

  • Ekiti 2018: PDP’s crumbling peace accord

Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, reports that the recent Peoples Democratic Party’s peace accord may have crumbled as the leaders go back to the trenches ahead the party primaries

The remnants of the peace accord procured by a delegation that included the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, and former President of the Senate, David Mark, barely a week ago for the Ekiti State chapter of the opposition party, continued to shred all through the week as gubernatorial spirants and other chieftains of the party renewed allegations of high-handedness and political thuggery against Governor Ayodele Fayose and his deputy, Professor Kolapo Olusola.

“If the governor’s camp is not properly called to order, the PDP will lose Ekiti State. If the violence and attacks on party members just because they are supporting Adeyeye or Olujimi continue, PDP will lose the support of even its own members across the state and both Fayose and Olusola, as well as those encouraging them to despise other PDP leaders now, will pay a huge political price,” an elderly party chieftain in Ikere-Ekiti, who sought anonymity, told The Nation.

“Reports about the ongoing party congresses from across the state give the indications that the peace accord reached a week ago is crumbling. Fayose promised not to interfere in the primary election, but he is hand-picking delegates that will vote in the same delegate. He has reneged on the promises he made to our leaders during the peace accord and the implication is that Ekiti PDP will go into the election divided,” our source warned.

Fayose has been constantly accused of a plot to impose his deputy, Olusola, on the party as its governorship candidate for the July election in the state. Amidst crises that threatened the chances of the party at the polls, a number of aspirants and their supporters have dumped the party while some others insist they will not leave the party nor will they allow Fayose have his way.

Worried about the unpleasant developments, the national leadership of the PDP, after months of pockets of interventions that failed to yield fruits, decided to take the bull by the horn. Leading other party leaders, Secondus and Mark stormed Ekiti and summoned Fayose, Olusola and other aspirants and party leaders to a peace parley which resulted in a much hyped peace accord.

Other governorship hopefuls at the parley, aside Olusola, were the Senate Minority Whip, Biodun Olujimi and former Minister for Works, Dayo Adeyeye. Consequently, not only did Fayose say he would give room for a free and fair primary election, he also added that he will temporarily relocate from Ekiti during the primary to ensure his neutrality, saying that without being physically present on the day of election, he would still win the election for his party.

“I want the other aspirants to be comfortable. The ultimate is to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti and Nigeria. I will not do anything that would undermine this process, the party and aspirants. In a matter like this, there will be many interests. I am for Olusola but I will stand by whosoever wins the primaries,” Fayose had assured those present at the peace parley.

In return, Olujimi and Adeyeye pledged to accept the result of the primary provided it was free, fair and transparent. Secondus said: “I assure you once again that there will be transparency and the process would not cheat anybody. I urge you to join the leaders to work together to ensure free, fair and transparent primaries. Trusted and eminent Nigerians will conduct the primaries.

Mark, who chaired the reconciliation committee, said the party has been working on bringing peace to Ekiti by reconciling all parties and that has been done very well, adding: “I thank you for the peaceful agreement to work together. I assure you that the process leading to the final election of whoever will become PDP candidate in Ekiti for the July poll will be free, fair and credible.

    Things falling apart

But with the election about three months away and the state PDP congresses to elect delegates that will vote at the primary election now generating more controversies across the state, observers of the politics of the state say the peace accord may have collapsed. Reports say not only are the processes of the congresses across the state being interfered with, supporters of gubernatorial aspirants are also being attacked and prevented from participating in the processes.

State coordinator of the PDP Youth Volunteers, (PYV) group within the party, Tayo Olubodun, while speaking with The Nation, lamented what he described as “the criminal manner in which delegates were being decided across the state.” The PDP chieftain called on Governor Fayose to be wary of those advising him to flout all democratic rules in his quest to force his deputy on the party as gubernatorial candidate.

“Daily, we are hearing tales of how people are being prevented from exercising their rights as party members to determine who their delegates will be. Stories of how aides of the governor are going round with ready-made lists and announcing names when people are supposed to be voting abound across the state. This is happening after the governor signed a peace accord to allow democracy to thrive. I am afraid the accord has failed,” he lamented.

But another chieftain of the party, Hon. Tade Fatukasi, accused those opposed to Olusola’s ambition of crying foul over nothing just to paint the process in bad light. He wondered where all the alleged happenings transpired. According to him, party members at ward and council levels have been electing delegates peacefully all through the week.

“It is unfortunate that some people are determined to cause problem in the PDP before jumping to the parties they really want to use to contest the next governorship election. They are unpopular in the party and they know. Go round the state and ask questions. People will tell you all these allegations are lies meant to give Governor Fayose and Olusola bad names. But they have all failed,” he said.

In one of the reported incidents of violence, a former Chairman of Ikere Local Government, Banji Aluko, was allegedly beaten up by youths suspected to be supporters of Olusola. “He was accused of working against Ikere Agenda, fashioned by Fayose in support of his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola. He is a supporter of Adeyeye,” a party source told The Nation.

Speaking on the incident, Aluko accused Olusola and Hon. Wale Ayeni, a member of the State Assembly, of masterminding the attack. “Our group won election at Ogbonjana ward 7 and we were rejoicing only for these thugs to pounce on me and beat me up. I have reported the case to the police and proper action will be taken against the sponsors,” he said.

    Back in the trenches?

Given the current developments, pundits are predicting a return to the trenches by the gladiators in the Ekiti PDP crisis unless something drastic is urgently done by the national leadership of the party again. Already, Adeyeye, one of the aspirants opposed to Fayose’s choice of Olusola, has raised alarm about what he described as a fresh clampdown on his supporters vowing to resist such henceforth.

Adeyeye, former Minister of State for Works, alleged that suspected thugs loyal to Olusola, led by a legislator, had been launching attacks on his supporters. “If truly Prof Olusola is popular at his hometown, why resorting to beating people and forcing them to swear to an oath to support his ambition in Ikere? This is a manifest sign of rejection at home and flagrant violation of the fundamental rights of association of these people.”

Adeyeye identified his supporters who were allegedly attacked on Sunday to include Ikere Local Government Deputy Chairman, Sunday Olorunfemi, Ikere PDP Treasurer, Tunde Ajewole, former Ikere Local Government Chairman, Banji Aluko, and Gbenga Ayeni. He said they were attacked during the ward congress on Saturday. He called on the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the alleged attacks and bring the perpetrators to book.

But the Director-General of Kolapo Olusola Campaign Organisation (KOCO), Chief Bisi Kolawole, denied the allegation of forcing Adeyeye’s supporters to swear to an oath to switch allegiance to the Deputy Governor. Kolawole alleged that people suspected to be Adeyeye’s supporters attacked Commissioner for Local Government, Mr. Ayo Alabi, with masqueraders in Ise-Ekiti (Adeyeye’s hometown), during the congress.

“The issue of putting some people under oath to support the Deputy Governor is not true. Was the oath done with the Bible or traditional means; we challenge them to tell the world. As politicians, we know those working for Adeyeye in Ikere and I want to say that those suffering such fate are double dealers who collect money from Olusola, Adeyeye and Olujimi. If you are for Adeyeye, why do you go to Olusola’s meeting? You came as a spy, why do you double-deal” he asked?

This was just as Fayose’s half-brother, Olanipekun  Oluwayose, on Tuesday defected from the PDP to the Action Democratic Party (ADP). He said he was quitting the PDP due to the alleged failure of his brother during his tenure, adding that the state was now poorer. Oluwayose, who shares the same father with the governor, formally announced his defection in his hometown, Afao-Ekiti, Irepodun-Ifelodun Local Government Area.

Oluwayose also described Fayose’s continuity agenda of endorsing his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as “an attempt to prolong the sufferings of Ekiti people and hold them in servitude.” He said his conscience could not be reconciled with “the directionless situation facing the state.” “How can I ignore the pains that unpaid wages have brought on our people?

“If we want a better society, we must not let our relationship allow us to hold us back from standing by what is right. My decision to dump PDP for ADP is borne out of my patriotism for an Ekiti that works for everyone. “Ekiti is in shambles and we must embrace the right ideas that can take us out of the current economic and social doldrums,” he said.

  • Shunning of Melaye recall exercise a verdict on the APC – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the poor turn out that characterized Saturday’s bid to recall Sen. Dino Melaye (APC/Kogi West) signified a total rejection of the Gov. Yahaya Bello-led administration in Kogi.

“`The general apathy that greeted the exercise, in spite of government efforts to mobilise people to participate, is a clear indication that the APC has lost relevance in Kogi,” PDP said in a statement signed by Mr Dickson Achadu,  Director, Research and Documentation.

The statement was issued on Saturday in Lokoja, shortly after INEC conducted its verification exercise for the recall process.

The Nation reports that the exercise witnessed a very low turn out with some polling units in Lokoja, Kabba, Ijumu and other local governments recording zero votes.

In Kabba, INEC officials were threatened by youths, while some women and youth groups sang songs praising Dino Melaye and vowing to resist any attempt to disgrace him out of office.

The PDP, while accusing Bello of trying to force the idea on the people, said that the rejection of the recall process had confirmed that he had lost value in Kogi.

It thanked leaders and people of Kogi West senatorial district for heeding its call to shun the exercise.

“The failure of the recall exercise is an indication that the present administration is not popular which, of course, is only natural because it has inflicted poverty, hardship and suffering on the people,” the statement said.

The PDP accused the state government of being insensitive to the plight of the people, and condemned the Bello-led administration several months salaries and pensions.

“It is unfortunate that in spite of the massive resources available to the present administration, no visible development has been witnessed in the last three years.

“The failure of the recall process is a signal that the people have bid the administration goodbye.

“We want to advise Bello to start packing his load; the red card signal is clear. It is an indication that Gov. Bello and his APC’s time in Kogi is up,” the statement said.

  • PDP urges members to vote against Melaye’s recall

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday directed its members in Kogi State to vote against the recall of Senator Dino Melaye during Saturday’s verification of petitioners’ signatures.

The PDP said in a statement in Lokoja it was not in support of Melaye’s recall from the beginning.

The party’s Director of Research and Documentation, Mr. Dickson Achadu, who signed the statement, described the attempt to recall Melaye as a product of internal crisis in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He, therefore, urged his party members to distance themselves from the exercise.

However, the party said it was in support of the senator’s agitation for good welfare for workers and the downtrodden, adding that the state had been made a laughing stock.

It urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to guard against being used in the plan to forcefully deny Kogi West quality representation at the Senate.

The party urged its members to remain peaceful and law-abiding but refrain from submitting to intimidation and inducement by the sponsors of the recall.

However, the state Police Command has assured the people of Kogi West senatorial district that the exercise would be peaceful and violence-free.

The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Ali Janga, in a statement, urged them to cooperate with the security agencies to ensure that criminal elements do not hijack the process.

Janga warned political thugs as well as those who do not have business at the polling units to stay away.

  • NASS invitation to Buhari reflects mood of the nation – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday hailed the decision of the two chambers of the National Assembly ( NASS ) to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to a joint session over alleged constitutional violations.

At the planned session, the President will also be required to discuss security issues, particularly the unprovoked killings by herdsmen in Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Adamawa, Nasarawa and other states.

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said the decision to invite the President was in consonant with the mood of the nation and the expectations of Nigerians.

“More so, the vote of no confidence passed on the Service Chiefs by federal lawmakers is a direct indictment of President Buhari, as a failed commander in chief of our armed forces, who must be held responsible for the security failures of our nation in the last three years.

“President Buhari has roundly failed in his oath of office and allegiance. He has roundly failed to dress his parade as a commander-in-chief in the last three years and must not be allowed to hide behind the Service Chiefs for his failures.

“Nigerians are very eager to listen to President Buhari and watch him respond to them through their National Assembly members. We therefore harbour no reservations in urging the federal lawmakers, as representatives of the people, not to succumb to any form of executive intimidation, blackmail and pressure to surrender their constitutional powers and duties.

“Section 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) fully empowers the National Assembly, as the collective voice and conscience of the people, to summon any person, including the President, to give evidence on any matter of state and to apply appropriate sanctions for noncompliance,” the statement said.

The party urged the President to take questions and address the nation in an open session at the National Assembly, stressing that matters of security were of paramount importance to Nigerians.

The party added: “Nigerians are eager to know why the Buhari administration is completely insensitive to their plight and why it has refused to take decisive steps to end the ceaseless killing and daily pillaging of citizens by insurgents and marauders.

“They are also eager to know why President Buhari, particularly, failed to act on intelligence reports and danger signs from flash points, particularly in Benue, Taraba, Yobe, Adamawa, Plateau, Zamfara, Kogi among others; a development that paved the way for the massacre of helpless citizens in these states.

“Furthermore, Nigerians are anxious to know why it took President Buhari months before he visited the troubled states; allowed his handlers to turn supposed condolence visits into political rallies to further his ill-fated 2019 re-election bid.

“We commend the courage exhibited by our lawmakers in initiating the constitutional process on the violations of our constitution particularly in the controversial Tucano fighter jets purchase deal and in summoning Mr. President to shed light on his efforts at curbing the endless mindless killings across our nation.

“Finally, we charge our legislators to note that Nigerians are looking up to them to rescue our nation at this critical time. They must therefore brace up to the imperatives of patriotism and set in motion necessary machinery that will ensure security and cohesion in our country.”

  • Alleged N322m fraud: Senator gets bail

    …trial begins June 13

The Federal High Court in Lagos on on Thursday granted bail to the Senator representing Delta North, Peter Nwaoboshi, on self-recognisance, following his arraignment on Wednesday for an alleged N322m fraud.

Justice Mohammed Idris, however, gave Nwaoboshi, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, 72 hours to provide two sureties on a N50million bond each.

The judge also ordered the lawmaker to deposit his international passport in the court’s custody. He must also not leave Nigeria without judicial permission.

The case was adjourned till June 13 and 20, for commencement of trial.

First defendant Nwaoboshi is standing trial alongside two firms on two counts bordering on conspiracy and money laundering, filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The second and third defendants are Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd and Suiming Electricals Ltd.

In a charge marked: FHC/L/117C/2018, the EFCC alleged that Nwaoboshi and Golden Touch Construction Project purchased a property known as Guinea House, Marine Road, Apapa, Lagos for N805m between May and June 2014.

The court heard that N322m out of the N805m paid for the property, was part of proceeds of “an unlawful act, to wit: fraud.”

The EFCC alleged that the N322m was transferred to the vendor of the property on the order of Suiming Electricals Limited.
Suiming Electricals Ltd was accused of aiding Nwaoboshi and Golden Touch Construction Project Limited to commit money laundering on or about May 14, 2014.

The prosecution said the offences contravened sections 18(a) and 15(2)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 and were punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

  • ACF, PDP, Mark, Suswam, others decry killings

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has described   Tuesday  killings in Benue State as “unfortunate”.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, the ACF said:  ”The spate of attacks on innocent people, including clergy men and worshippers in their places of worship, is most callous and unfortunate.

”ACF therefore calls on the security agencies to be more proactive and re-strategise their security operations in order to nip these avoidable bloodlettings in the bud.

“Perpetrators of these heineous crimes should be fished out and be brought to book to serve as deterrence to others.

”Furthermore, ACF urges the Federal Government to set up a panel of inquiry into these incessant killings that have continued to bedevil most of the Northern states, with the hope that amicable solution would be found for common good.

”ACF consoles the government, people and families of those killed and wounded and hope that God would provide them with what it takes to bear the losses. May their souls Rest In Peace.”

Former Senate President David Mark condemned the killings.

In a statement on Wednesday by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark said: “I am saddened by this unabating carnage. The people of Benue State are accommodating and law-abiding but it seems this gesture has been misconstrued to be cowardice.

“Our people are known for their bravery. We are not cowards. Something must be done to stop this carnage. Enough is enough.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described it as sacrilegious and callous.

Spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan said: “More worrisome is that the Federal Government has continued to allow these killings without any decisive steps to stem the ugly trend.

“President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) Federal Government must live up to its basic responsibility of protection of lives and our national territorial integrity. Indeed, our citizens cannot continue to daily fall victims to attacks by marauders while the government fails to exert itself to guarantee their safety.”

“The PDP commiserates with the Catholic Church, the government and people of Benue State as well as the families of the victims of these horrendous killings.

“We pray God to heal our land and enthrone a national leadership that would restore peace, unity and harmonious living in our country,” the statement added.

Former Governor Gabriel Suswam and former Assembly Speaker Terhile Ayua condemned the killings.

They also sent their condolences to the Catholic Church and the people of the state over the killings of two priests and 14 other worshippers by alleged herdsmen during mass on Tuesday.

Suswam, in a statement he personally signed said: “Words fail me to convey my feelings of grief at this sad occurrence, neither can another mere condemnation of such a dastardly heinous act suffice.

“It is becoming a tragic routine to witness those killings and issue condemnation to them, after which they continue.”

  • Southwest PDP tackles APC

The Southwest arm of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday urged members to channel their energy towards wresting power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It said they should not dissipate it on needless in-fighting.

The party warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to desist from meddling in the internal affairs of parties.

PDP National Vice Chairman (South West) Dr. Eddy Olafeso spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, at the zonal meeting of the Extended Working Committee of Southwest PDP.

He said the task to reclaim the region for PDP in future elections must be accomplished, warning the chieftains to expect a big fight from the APC.

”What is important here is not fighting ourselves, but fighting the APC government so that we can free our people from the clutches of this bad governance. Within the last few months and years that they have been there, Nigeria has turned to a mystery land; it’s a killing field for everybody.

“The economy has gone down. No family can say they are better off today than they were three years ago that the PDP was in power. And if that is the situation, what should confront us is the unity we must share to deal with the APC government and the common enemy among all of us is the APC and not ourselves.

“Winning the Southwest is a task that we all must do; it’s no longer a Disneyland story of happy ever after. APC government will fight us, but we are ready to rewrite this ugly chapter in Nigerian history and we’ll do everything possible to mobilise and ensure that our people are properly positioned to vote out, in the coming general election, this government that took our country and shredded it.

“When you talk about a renewed and rebranded PDP, this is just the beginning. Internal democracy has been strengthened and we will ensure that everybody is allowed to participate. The era of impunity and self-righteousness is over in our party,” Olafeso said.

He expressed satisfaction with the activities of PDP in Ekiti and Osun states, saying it is on ground.

The national vice chairman advised those aggrieved to work for harmony, and refrain from inimical activities.

The PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, said members should have confidence in themselves and refused to be intimidated.

He said the party, through the National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, had taken a strong and irrevocable position on the situation in the Ogun State chapter.

In a communiqué at the end of the meeting, the Southwest PDP resolved to hold a mega rally in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on May 5 ”to engender brotherhood and comradeship within the party in the zone.”

It said the PDP national chairman and leadership of the party from across the nation will be in attendance.

The communiqué reads: “That we abhor INEC’s interference in the affairs of parties and thus declare this attitude as interloping and overbearing. This we do in view of the Supreme Court declaration on the powers of party convention and authority conferred on them.
