  • PDP decries killing of Catholic priests, worshippers

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday described as sacrilegious and callous, the gruesome murder of two Catholic priests and worshippers at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Ukpor, Mbalom, in Gwer West local government area of Benue State.

The party said the attack on innocent and defenseless Nigerians while during worship is extremely wicked and cannot be justified under any guise whatsoever.

In a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party expressed worry over the unabated killings in Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Kogi, Zamfara, Plateau, Bornu, Adamawa and other parts of the country where bloodletting has become a daily occurrence.

The statement said: “More worrisome is that the Federal Government has continued to allow these killings without any decisive steps to stem the ugly trend.

“President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government must live up to its basic responsibility of protecting lives and our national territorial integrity. Indeed, our citizens cannot continue to daily fall victims to attacks by marauders while the government fails to exert itself to guarantee their safety.”

The party urged security agencies to take immediate steps towards apprehending the perpetrators and masterminds of the dastardly act and ensure the safety of Nigerians, particularly in the troubled states.

“Finally, the PDP commiserates with the Catholic Church, the government and people of Benue State as well as the families of the victims of these horrendous killings.

“We pray God to heal our land and enthrone a national leadership that would restore peace, unity and harmonious living in our country,” the statement added.

  • Fayose’s brother dumps PDP for ADP

    •Ekiti people ‘are suffering’

Ekiti state overnor Ayo Fayose’s half brother, Olanipekun Ayo Oluwayose, has dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the Action Democratic Party (ADP).

Oluwayose joined the ADP in his hometown, Afao-Ekiti, when the party’s governorship aspirant, Otunba Segun Adewale, visited the community in continuationof his mobilisation tours.

He explained that he dumped the PDP because of the alleged failure of his brother, Fayose, who, he said,  made Ekiti poorer.

He described Fayose’s continuity agenda and his endorsement of his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as “an attempt to prolong the sufferings of Ekiti people and hold them in servitude.”

While admitting sharing blood relations with the governor, Oluwayose said his conscience could not be reconciled with “the directionless situation facing the state.”

Oluwayose said: “How can I ignore the pains that unpaid wages have brought on our people?

“If we want a better society, we must not let our relationship allow us to hold us back from standing by what is right.

“My decision to dump the PDP for the ADP is borne out my patriotism for an Ekiti that works for everyone. Ekiti is in shamble and we must embrace the right ideas that can take us out from the current economic and social doldrums.

“Let me make something clear here. I think today is the first time I’m meeting Adewale, but I have heard  a lot about his capacity and resolve to turn a hopeless situation into an endless opportunity.

“We need someone of his standing to bring to bear his experience and discipline to the resuscitation of our social and economic values.”

Oluwayose pledged his commitment to the success of Adewale’s aspiration in Afao-Ekiti and the state at the July 14 poll, vowing to resist any attempt to manipulate the votes of the people.

Adewale welcomed Oluwayose and his supporters to the ADP, which, he said, has become a movementthat is attracting members on a daily basis.

The aspirant said the party will provide good governance, create jobs and attract investment to Ekiti to make it a model state in the country.

  • PDP charges NASS to sanction Buhari over withdrawal of $1bn ECA fund

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday charged the National Assembly to commence constitutional processes against President Muhammadu Buhari.

The party said the President violated his oath of office by “illegally” withdrawing and spending $I billion from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) without the constitutionally required legislative appropriation.

A statement issued on Monday by the spokesman of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said President Buhari was aware that his unilateral spending of $496 million (N151.374 billion) from the ECA, without recourse to the legislative approval of the National Assembly, was a gross violation of the laws and constitution of Nigerian and a direct affront to statutory order as a democratic state.

“By this action, President Buhari has technically suspended the 1999 Constitution (as amended), plundered the inherent powers of the National Assembly as the principal institution of democratic rule, while re-enacting a sole administratorship in governance as if our nation is operating a military regime.

“More disturbing is the revelation that President Buhari paid the $496 million for the purchase of military aircraft from the United States, ignoring allegations of overprice and issues concerning due process, just to achieve a political expediency of currying President Donald Trump’s support for his 2019 re-election bid,” the statement added.

The party further stated that the President’s action amounted to a gross misconduct and betrayal of public trust, adding that in the bid to push a personal agenda, he deliberately side-stepped statutory legislative scrutiny and acted in clear breach of section 80 (3) (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“While Section 80 (3) states that “no monies shall be withdrawn from any public fund of the federation, other than the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the federation unless the issues of those monies have been authorized by an act of the National Assembly

“Section 80 (4) provides that “no monies shall be withdrawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund or any other public fund of the federation except in the manner prescribed by the National Assembly.

“It is shocking that President Buhari, whose administration prides on claims of transparency and zero tolerance for corruption, elected on a platform that lay claims to the height of progressivism, who boasts of the highest standards of integrity, can mundanely resort to a violent abuse of our constitution just to suit a desperate passion of seeking re-election.

“It would be recalled that following the public outcry over the announcement that President Buhari had unilaterally approved the withdrawal of $1 billion from the ECA, the Presidency, through its  Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Inang, on April 9, 2018, stated that no such approval had been made, adding that the President would never act in breach of section 80 of the constitution; yet they were aware that payments have been made,” the party added.

  • 2019: Can APC beat PDP in Edo parliamentary polls?

Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial and House of Representative aspirants have begun consultation and mobilisation ahead of next year’s elections. Correspondent OTABOR OSAGIE examines preparations for the contest.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are preparing for next year’s parliamentary elections in Edo State. Aspirants are intensifying their consultations and mobilisation, ahead of the exercise. There is no governorship election in Edo State. So, the  parties are focusing on the National Assembly and House of Assembly polls. While the APC is boasting that it will install majority of the legislators, the PDP is also saying that it will pull the rug off the ruling party’s feet.

For the APC, the National Assembly elections is a must. The Senate election will be a big battle. The party is planning to field individuals capable of unseating PDP legislators in Edo South and Edo Central districts. Edo North is the stronghold of the party. To the APC, it is a ‘revenge election’ to finally ‘ bury’ the PDP in Edo. The calibre of APC candidates will determine whether the party will be victorious at the polls or not.

However, the PDP is not sleeping on guard. It is trying frantically to consolidate on its successes in the 2015 general elections. Following the announcement of the 2015 National Assembly elections results, APC leaders were shocked that the PDP emerged victorious in Edo South and Edo Edo Central senatorial districts. Two senators-Clifford Ordia (Edo Central) and Matthew Urhoghide (Edo South) were elected on the platform of the PDP while APC’s Francis Alimekhena was victorious in Edo North, the stronghold of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

To ensure victory at the polls, the PDP has inaugurated a 10-man committee on grassroots mobilisation. It is headed by Prophet Emmanuel Ojo. The committee, according to the party chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, is to woo new members from every part of the state into the party.

    Edo South:

Senator Urhoghide, is nursing a second term ambition. Many members of the PDP have given him the nod to seek re-election, owing to what they described as his ‘superlative performance in office.’

Urhoghide is the fourth person to represent Edo South since 1999. His predecessors are Senator Roland Owie, Daisy Danjuma and Ehigie Uzamere. Only Uzamere has succeeded in securing a second term in office, based on the support of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who was in a battle of supremacy with Chief Tony Anenih.

The seat has always been occupied by the PDP. But, Senator Uzamere decided to jump ship. He was elected to the Senate in the PDP. He defected to the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN) after he fell out with Anenih. After he was re-elected in 2011 in the ACN, the serial defector returned to the PDP, a party he once described as worthless as the Zimbabwean dollars.

From all indications, Senator Urhoghide may become the flag bearer at the primary.  Former APC governorship aspirant Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki has indicated interest to run for the Senate. But, PDP leaders have urged him to drop the ambition and allow Urhoghide to run for a second term.

APC chieftains who are interested in the Senate in Edo South are  the former deputy governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, Special Adviser to Governor Obaseki on National Assembly Matters, Hon Patrick Obahiagbon, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, Hon Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, Samson Osagie and a former Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice, Henry Idahagbon.

According to sources, Obahiagbon is more favored to get the APC ticket. Obahiagbon served as Chief of Staff to Oshiomhole. He served in the state House of Assembly for two terms before moving to the House of Representatives where he served only one term. A chieftain of the APC said Iduoriyekemwen may give Obahiagbon a though battle at the APC primary. Others are still consulting on whether to run or not.

    Edo Central:

The APC has found it difficult to penetrate Edo Central. The PDP is a household name in the district. Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu got majority of votes from Edo Central during the 2016 governorship election. In 2011, the defunct ACN scuttled its chances of winning the elections because its leaders were not united. Party insiders said Senator Clifford Ordia of the PDP, who is currently representing the zone, will get the ticket to re-contest. His victory at the poll may not be easy because APC leaders are also working hard to dismantle his stronghold.

Chieftains of the APC interested in the race are Prince Joe Okojie, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, Emmanuel Usoh, Hon Frank Okiye, Felix Akhabue and Theophilux Okoh. It will be a battle of wits for the contenders. The serious contenders are Okoh, Okojie and Inegbeneki.

The chairman of the Esan West Council, Patrick Aguinede, said Anenih’s retirement from politics and the defection of some PDP chieftains are a great blow to the PDP in Edo Central.

He said: “Edo Central was the core hub of the PDP because of Chief Tony Anenih who is from this place. But now, many PDP leaders like Osunbor have defected to the APC. Chief Anenih is now retired. His retirement also means a lot of people are retiring. Government’s deliberate developmental policies have made a lot of people to see the need to appreciate what the governor has done. They are joining the APC. One of their arrowheads in Ekpoma, Felix Akhabue, is now in the APC. He commands a large following. He has left the PDP. Many of them have left the PDP. The PDP is a thing of the past in Edo Central. We are going to get pockets of opposition here and I see that the APC victory will be overwhelming.”

Aguinede added: “The APC will win in this state because the governor has performed very well. The elected chairmen are success-driven. They cannot but replicate the developmental drive of the governor. If the chairmen have performed well, why will the APC not win? With the local government chairmen on ground, I see no reason why we will not win. The policy of ‘you must win your ward’ as introduced by Governor Obaseki is such a thing that will help us. It will be good to introduce it at the federal level. Every politician that wants something in government is enjoined to win his ward. You will now see politicians working hard to win elections in their wards. It has paid off very well. In the local government elections, if you did not win your ward, you have no reason to aspire. It was implemented in this contest. Many people did not make it because it shows they are not popular in their area. People are now looking inward and working to win their wards.”

But, Orbih said the APC will fail at the polls. He said: “The APC have the right to say whatever they want to say. but we know the reality on ground. Today, I can frankly state that the APC situation in Edo Central is worse than it was in the last election. Edo Central is one senatorial district that they have been denied everything politically. Look at all the appointments in the state. Edo is made up of three senatorial districts and each senatorial district has been well represented by previous administrations. But today, under Obaseki, for reasons best known to him, Oshiomhole, his political godfather, determines and dictates what is done under his administration.

“For reasons best known to Obaseki, the position of the Speaker was taken away and given to Edo North. Edo North that had a governor for eight years and now has the deputy governor. Is that what will make them consolidate their support in Edo Central? That is one district they should not expect any support in the next election. It is very unfair to Edo Central people. It is an insult for the APC to even consider coming to Edo Central to ask for votes.”

    Edo North:

Since 2008, the PDP has always found it difficult to win elections in Edo North. It was a fierce battle in 2016. Alimhekhena is interested in returning to the Senate. But, the primary will not be a walk over for him or any other aspirant. He has a serious opponent in Professor Julius Ihonvbere, who contested at the APC primary against him. The former university don is still be interested in the Senate. But, some postings on the social media by his supporters also suggest that may be interested in the House of Representatives ticket. Edo North is a stronghold of the APC. The PDP’s dream of winning election in the zone may be a mirage because of the achievements of Comrade Oshiomhole.

  • 2019: Challenges before PDP

What must the PDP do for it to actualise its desire of returning to the presidency after the 2019 General Election? Given the vastly divided opinions of its leading chieftains and members over how to procure the party’s next presidential candidate, Assistant Editor, Dare Odufowokan, writes on the options before the opposition party ahead of the forthcoming elections.

PROMINENT chieftains of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and some other notable politicians, who are currently members of other political parties, were locked in a marathon meeting penultimate Wednesday night in Lagos. This is even as the party announced its plan to put in place a process that could see youths taking over the leadership of the party and the country in 2019.

National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, had said the party was coming up with “Generation Next” programme for repositioning youths to take over leadership in 2019. He said that the programme was designed to prepare the youths to take over political leadership in the country. According to him, with the programme, age barrier will be removed and a 25-year old that is popular and intelligent can be voted into power as governor.

The Lagos meeting, sources told The Nation, was convened by concerned party chieftains from the various zones of the country to deliberate on the lingering uncertainty over how the party will choose its 2019 presidential flag-bearer. Worried that less than a year to the much anticipated election, there is so much confusion and anxiety over the process, chieftains at the marathon meeting, held in the private residence of a prominent member of the party, in the highbrow Ikoyi area of the state, looked at the options before the party with a view to advising its leadership accordingly.

It was gathered that at the meeting, the group resolved to meet and consult with more party chieftains and stakeholders within and outside the PDP. Issues the parley discussed at the meeting included how to ensure that the process that will produce the party’s presidential candidate is crisis-free as well as how to douse the growing discontent among PDP members in the Southwest which has been resulting in unending defections.

“We are still discussing. I can tell you this is just the first of such meetings. There is need to look at the many options before our great party and decide on how best to approach 2019 as a political party, especially one in the opposition. Many people have said PDP has what it takes to return to power immediately. We feel so too but there is great need to ensure that we get it right before and during the election.

“What we are gathered here to do is largely to intervene in good time to ward off some things that are militating against a peaceful primary process as we approach the 2019 presidential election. We know that there are already varying opinions and interests within the ranks of our party leaders and chieftains. This is expected. Even beyond the party, people are interested in how we will choose our flag-bearer. This is because Nigerians know we are the one with the best alternative plans for Nigeria,” a source at the meeting told our correspondent.

The Nation was reliably informed that the group has decided to expand its membership and meet again in Abuja next month. It was also gathered that committees were formed to discuss with other stakeholders, including aspirants, party leaders, governors as well as other opposition political parties as part of consultations aimed at helping the PDP make the best decision concerning its 2019 presidential ticket.

Beyond the Lagos meeting, there are several other indications that the PDP will have to promptly choose from a number of options as it struggles to reposition itself in time for the next general election. Party sources say there are already pockets of underground scheming and rivalries among party leaders over many of the issues that have to do with 2019 and the elections.

“Things are not alright within the party. There seems to be no agreement among our leaders on a number of things and this is affecting the party’s preparation for the next presidential election. While it is the desire of many of us to see PDP win the presidency again, the inability of many chieftains to submit to the desire of others is making decision making difficult. In PDP today, there are not less than five camps as far as the presidential ticket is concerned,” our source claimed.

    PDP governors, will they bow?

To start with, many stakeholders within the party today are unhappy with alleged plans by governors elected on the platform of the party to foist a presidential candidate on PDP just as they allegedly did last December when against all odds, their preferred candidate, Uche Secondus, emerged as the National Chairman of the opposition party from a highly disputed convention.

“Today, some of our governors carry on as if they own the party. It was not only the governors who fought to rescue PDP from the impostors that almost crippled it. We all did. So, it is unacceptable for the governors to be insisting on determining who will be the candidate of the party. Other stakeholders must be allowed to participate in a free and fair selection process.

“A situation where some governors, who see themselves as the alpha and the omega of the party, are openly telling some aspirants to forget the race as they will not support them is undemocratic. Unless the governors allow for a level playing ground, PDP may not make the best use of the opportunity provided by the next presidential election for it to redeem itself as a political party,” a PDP federal legislator from Ogun State said.

But the governors on the other hand, are said to believe that for PDP to get it right this time around, they must ensure that control of the party lies with them as the main financiers of its activities. The Nation gathered that the issue of how to choose the presidential candidate of the party is already tearing the Governor’s Forum apart following the alleged opposition of the majority of the governors to the presidential aspiration of one of them, Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State.

Aside Dankwambo, other PDP presidential aspirants include a former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, the immediate past Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, who is kicking against the party’s decision to zone the ticket to the north.

The alleged overbearing attitude of the governors, according to reports, has angered some prominent chieftains of the party from the north who argued that since the party has zoned the slot to them, they should be allowed to drive the process that will eventually produce the candidate in 2019. Determined to ensure they are not sidelined in the process, northern PDP leaders instituted a number of committees to fashion out modalities on how the party should produce its candidate, but it appears the move is generating ripples within the party.

But in a statement that underscored the determination of party leaders from the north to ensure a process beyond the dictate of the governors, Sen. Walid Jibrin, the Chairman of Board of Trustees (BoT), recently urged the party to support the north to give PDP a credible candidate from the zone. He said the party’s leadership in the North had already put in place machinery to ensure the emergence of the best presidential candidate from the area in 2019.

“All of us as a party have agreed that the President of Nigeria should come from the North in 2019. I enjoin you to support the North to bring and give us capable presidential candidate. We are all doing what we can in the North with all the leaders to identify who is the best candidate to rule this country. The best person that will take power from the ruling party in 2019 is our own, 2019 is for the PDP,” he said.

For the PDP to do well in the 2019 presidential election, it is important that the choice of who flies the party’s banner does not pitch prominent chieftains of the party from the north against the governors. Both divides need one another to do well in the election. It is now left to be seen whether PDP governors, who, according to reports, are unwilling to leave anything to chance this time around, will allow for a process beyond their influence.

    Merger, alliance as options

Also being seriously discussed within the PDP are the issues of either merging with other parties to prosecute the 2019 general election or forming loose alliances in the quest to defeat the ruling APC. Still, for many, including some governors and other prominent chieftains and camps, the option of going it alone in 2019 is still preferable. And as the debate rages, some developments ahead of the election are daily forcing the hands of PDP to promptly take a decision.

While nearly all party leaders are conscious of the fact that the PDP may not be able to confront the APC without the help of some other political parties and groups, they have been unable to agree on the best way to enlist such support as the election draws closer. While some are calling for merger as being demanded by some political parties under the auspice of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), some are advising loose alliances that can be dismantled after the election, while many are insisting the PDP stay on its own.

Last Wednesday, Secondus said the PDP is now ready to work with other political parties and is consulting with a number of groups. Recent consultations, he said, were useful, and that in the coming days, a broader platform would be raised to wrestle power from the APC. He said that PDP had taken it upon itself as the leading opposition party to broaden its scope, open its doors and allow ideas to flow in for a more robust democratic process.

“Our consultations have taken us to meet with various interest groups, who are willing to do business with us. I can report to you that it has been very fruitful. We expect in the coming days to have a broader political family, working hard to rescue this democracy and our beloved country from the hands of APC.” He hinted that all former presidents and former leaders of Nigeria were in unison to make sure that in 2019 a fresh and new government was formed in the interest of the nation.

The PDP boss called on members of the party and other political parties to join forces to rescue power from the APC. “We, therefore, invite our brothers, sisters, youths and women from other political parties in this platform to join us to rescue our country that is in distress, socially, politically, economically and security-wise,” the party chairman appealed.

Rather than douse the uncertainty over the party’s political journey to 2019, Secondus’ statement, according to party sources, may have ignited fresh anxiety as many party leaders, especially those opposed to merger, are making frantic efforts to find out what the party chairman meant by being ready to ‘work with other political parties’. “Many of them have been meeting to discuss the statement with a view to opposing any merger plan.

“But the truth of the matter is that the PDP, if we are serious of defeating the APC next year, must seriously consider working in tandem with many like-minds. APC saw this need and did the needful in 2014. They are better off for it today. Why shouldn’t PDP do same? The party has a decision to make about this and it is a decision that must be made as soon as possible,” a party chieftain said.

    Vice Presidency

While zoning its 2019 presidential ticket to the north, the opposition party also decided that the vice presidential ticket will be given to the southern part of the country. But the zoning arrangement was silent on which of the three zones in the south will get the ticket. This has been interpreted correctly to mean that any of the three zones can aspire and produce the running mate to PDP’s presidential candidate in 2019.

The Nation however learnt that leaders of the party in the south, sometimes last year, prior to the national convention in December, micro-zoned the position to the Southeast, just as the national chairmanship of the party was ceded to the Southwest. But with the inability of the Southwest to produce the national chairman, which eventually went to the South-south, contrary to the agreement, a fresh tussle for the vice presidential ticket has ensued between the Southeast and the Southwest.

‘The ticket is zoned to the south by the party. It was not agreed which part of the south it should go but I think the southerners met and reached some agreements. Perhaps developments have altered that agreement and now the party must carefully decide on the matter. It is something that calls for serious consideration. It can make or mar the PDP during the presidential election,’ a party leader from the Northcentral said.

The Nation learnt that the issue is one of the things currently being considered by a committee put in place by the BoT of the party to advise the leadership on the 2019 presidential election. “Both the Southwest and the Southeast are crucial to our winning the election. Of a fact, the PDP must strive to win the Southwest if it is to defeat APC. What with the huge population of Lagos State alone? Should we allow that to fall into the hand of our opponents? I don’t think so.

“But the Southeast is our stronghold. We must not lose that to the opposition too. But they also desire to be on the ballot for them to have a sense of belonging. Since 1999, the Southeast is yet to produce a President or Vice President in this country. So, the Southeast is looking forward to having the chance this time and it will not be easy to convince them to forget the idea and still vote for PDP,” our source said.

To further complicate the matter, leaders of the PDP in the Southwest are insisting that the only way to appease the zone for being denied the national chairmanship position last December is to cede the vice presidency to it. It was learnt that a leading presidential candidate from the zone (Southwest) is strongly supporting this agitation from which he is currently seen as the most likely beneficiary.

It is now left to be seen how the PDP will resolve this tussle between the two zones without losing support in either ahead of the 2019 presidential election. Already, there are talks about the need for the party to give Governor Fayose the vice presidential ticket once the presidential ticket is given to a candidate from the north as a way of pacifying him and keeping him in the party beyond 2019.

“Governor Fayose is a smart politician. He declared presidential ambition, knowing fully well that his party has zoned the ticket to the north. It is nothing but a gimmick meant to announce his interest in the vice presidential slot. Now that he has done that and he is always winning his state for the PDP, will it be easy for the PDP to ignore him and give the presidential ticket to the Southeast? I don’t think so,” a source added.

  • Mace Saga: PDP calls for urgent inquest

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called for urgent inquest into the security breach that characterised Wednesday’s invasion of the Senate and forceful removal of its mace.

The party made the call in a resolution at its emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.

In the resolution released on Friday, it said that security at the National Assembly complex was compromised during the incident, and that it should be expeditiously addressed.

The party described the invasion as treasonable and direct attack on the sovereignty of Nigeria and her integrity, which must be jointly condemned by all Nigerians.

It charged security agencies to arrest and prosecute all persons involved in the embarrassing incident “notwithstanding status’’.

The party also resolved that the PDP leads a strong conversation and discussion towards a formal coalition of democratic forces to guarantee Nigerians the much-desired all-inclusive platform ahead of 2019 general elections.

It directed the NEC to commence action towards the establishment of a shadow cabinet to pilot its roadmap towards national economic recovery and good governance.

According to the resolution this should be done in line with the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians, ahead of 2019 elections.

“In the same vein, the NEC also strongly condemns the branding of Nigerian youths as lazy by President Muhammadu Buhari. It is a direct injury on the sensibility of the youths.

“Nigerian youths are known worldwide to as hardworking.

“The PDP reaffirms its belief and confidence in Nigerian youths and boldly announces to the world that our youths are resourceful and agile.

“Our nation is blessed with hardworking young men and women,’’ it said.

  • PDP to President: youths are not lazy

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disputed President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged statement describing youths as lazy.

According to the main opposition party, Nigerian youths, by their demonstrated industry, could not in any way be described by anybody as lazy.

A statement yesterday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Nigerians find it extremely shocking that Buhari could make such a “false, derogatory and unpatriotic” comment against our citizens at a time the nation was looking up to him to properly present the country’s potentials to the global business community.

The statement said: “It is alarming that at every international event, the President makes it a favorite past time to de-market, paint and denigrate our dear nation and her citizens in very negative light, an indication that he has stopped believing in Nigeria.

“Mr. President’s latest salvo is totally unacceptable and must be condemned by all right-thinking people to avoid further verbal assault against our country, particularly at international fora.”

  • 2019: PDP broadens consultations to challenge APC

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it has stepped up consultations with a broader spectrum of stakeholders from diverse political leanings.

Its National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, who gave the hint in Abuja yesterday, said the move was geared toward defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections.

According to him, responses from the various stakeholders have been encouraging, adding that the need to rescue the country from the grip of the APC was an enormous challenge.

“Majority of Nigerians who are disillusioned about the state of affairs in the last three years, are excited that we are trying to get it right as we remain the last hope for our democracy”, Secondus said.

The party chair, who spoke at the 79th edition of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP, hailed some elder statesmen, who have raised their voices against what he described as the misrule of the APC.

The chairman said: “We commend our elder statesmen and other patriotic Nigerians who have spoken up on the urgent need to rid the country of the current bad APC government and enthrone a government that will serve our needs.

“Because of this challenge, we have taken it upon ourselves as the leading opposition party to broaden our scope, open our doors and allow ideas to flow in for a more robust democratic development.

“We, therefore, invite our brothers, sisters, youths and women from other political parties in this platform to join us to rescue our country that is in distress, socially, politically, economically and security wise.

“In this country today, over 3.1 million citizens are languishing in various IDP camps across the country, yet we are not at war with any country.

“Our consultations have taken us to meet with various interest groups who are willing to do business with us and I can report to you that it has been very fruitful.

  • ‘PDP to present candidate better than Buhari’

A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Ebenezer Babatope, said yesterday that the party would present a candidate that would defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Babatope, ex-minister of Transportation, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the phone that PDP would take its time to produce such a candidate.

He said: “PDP will present a better candidate than President Buhari in the next elections. We can give Nigerians that assurance.

“We will take our time and ensure that our presidential aspirants are not navigating the political terrain unnecessarily.

“They must be sure of themselves such that anyone who eventually emerges the party’s candidate will be better than President Buhari.’’

Babatope noted that the party will not care if the candidate is a political heavyweight or a light weight, but a candidate who will deliver the goods to the masses.

He said the party would give aspirants equal opportunities to sell themselves.

Babatope said PDP was not fazed by the declaration by the President to seek re-election, as he had a right to do so.

He said it was the right of PDP to present a candidate to defeat him and perform better.

The former minister expressed excitement that the leadership tussle in the Southwest zone has been resolved.

He noted that the task before the party in the zone is to reconcile members ahead of the general election.

“We are in the process of uniting the rank and file of the party in the zone.

“Nobody will be left out, everybody will be carried along.

“We will ensure factions are kept together for unity and peace before the election,’’ Babatope said.

He hailed Dr. Eddy Olafeso, chairman of the party in the zone, for his efforts, and urged members to support him.
