Ondo PDP holds congress as Agboola Ajayi’s absence fuels defection speculations

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State over the weekend held its congress, with its 2024 governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, notably absent from the exercise.

Ajayi, who contested the November 16, 2024 gubernatorial election but lost to incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has sparked fresh speculation about a possible defection to the APC after recently withdrawing his Supreme Court case challenging Aiyedatiwa’s victory.

At the congress, Barrister Victor Modupe Aisida emerged as the new PDP State Chairman, succeeding Bakitta Bello, who had completed the tenure of the late Hon. Fatai Adams.

Other newly elected officials include Akin Oyewole (deputy chairman), Oluseye Olujimi (secretary), Jolade Aladetan (publicity secretary), and Woke Akindiose (legal adviser).

In his acceptance speech, Aisida pledged to restore unity, discipline, and strength to the party.

He emphasized the need for inclusiveness, intergenerational collaboration, and rebuilding internal trust.

“Our party has faced turbulence and tribulations, sometimes from enemies outside but mostly from cracks within. Yet, like the palm tree in the storm, we have bent but never broken. We will rise again, stronger, wiser, and more determined,” Aisida declared.

“We are determined to instil discipline to regain the glory of our party through a deliberate recourse to our party’s constitution and organs at all times,” Aisida said.

Aisida also promised a constructive opposition to the APC, advocating for engagement over hostility and adherence to the party’s constitution as the bedrock of his leadership.

He called on party faithful to set aside past grievances and unite to reposition the PDP as a credible alternative in Ondo state.

The peaceful congress was attended by prominent figures of the opposition party, including its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, former National Vice Chairman, Eddy Olafeso, State Elders Council Chairman, Omotayo Dairo, NEC member, Engineer Clement Faboyede and the PDP Electoral Committee led by Hon. 2027: Hon Ajiya dumps PDP, joins APC in Abuja

    • …cites internal crises

A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Honourable Abraham Stephen Ajiya, has dumped the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal crises as major reasons.

Recall that Hon. Ajiya has been in a legal battle with the party owing to the poor outcome of the PDP North Central Vice-chairmanship election in which he was a candidate.

Ajiya, who made this known during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, said that he chose to join the party after due consultation and with a sense of responsibility to the people of FCT, and he decided to join the APC.

While throwing more light on his well-thought-out decision, he noted, “Many may ask reasons for the decision, but you and I know that my journey with the PDP as a party platform has not been cordial and promising for a young and upcoming politician like me.

He said that with the bad and threatening experiences he had in the PDP, he is left with no choice but to seek a better platform where he is valued, where his ideas and sense of innovation can be put to practice to help build his region, which is presently backward in economic development.

“What makes one political party different from another is the name, logo, members, operators, structures, level of organisation, and reach. All of the above are in mature democracies, but with the most important thing missing – the platform”, he added.

Further highlighting some of his reasons, said,  “It would be of great value to enlighten you about my ordeal in the PDP. And this forms the main reason for my departure from the ruling APC.

“Yours sincerely contested for the PDP Vice-chairman, North Central micro zones to the FCT. The outcome of the election at Jos, the host city, was short of the practice of democracy, as the election was predetermined by party leadership.

“The event further turned into a mere formality when the caucus and other leaders pressured me to step down for an unqualified candidate, which I refused. Afterwards, “I sought the intervention of the appeal panel, but I never saw their meeting venue. I was later informed that the panel sat immediately after the election, the same day, and gave their verdict. A practice which is unheard of.

“I later headed to seek redress at the ordinary court of law, but after due consultation, it became imperative to seek a new ground to further my political career”.

He informed that these are the kind of politics played in so many political parties without vision and mission, which are mere self-serving.

He stressed that struggling with a non-committal political party like the PDP seems to be a waste of time, energy, and resources.

Meanwhile, Ajiya has revealed that part of his reasons to join the APC as an indigene of the Federal Capital Territory FCT is to be part of the ongoing good works being executed by the Hon. Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike, and his own brother Christopher Maikalangu, the current Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC)

He described the FCT transformation under the duo as a testament to the vision of a political party committed to ensuring the people benefit from the dividends of democracy proclaimed by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

“Today, I can announce to you that I have become a member of the APC, with a vision to make meaningful contributions and add value to the good works the APC leadership is bringing to my people.

“The ruling party, we have seen, has assured the removal of fuel subsidy; it has also assured that the country has a new tax regime, as well as the ongoing electoral reforms and review of the constitution for a greater Nigeria.

Obviously, President Bola Tinubu has shown that he is a fearless, great politician who has the political will to stand on his promises without fear or favour. I welcome you all on board as we take Nigeria to greater heights”, he said

Otunba Emmanuel Fayose has withdrawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary in Ekiti State, citing alleged compromise by the party’s national leadership.

“I am using this occasion to formally announce my decision and that of my teeming supporters to resign our membership from the PDP,” Fayose said.

According to him, the party’s leadership under Damagum and Anyanwu has “hindered the progress of the PDP in Ekiti State,” making the governorship primary an exercise already programmed for failure.

2027: ‘PDP’s open ticket confirms Olawepo-Hashim’s position on zoning’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally aligned with the long-held position of technocrat and politician, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, by declaring that its zoning arrangement will not prevent aspirants from other regions from contesting the presidential ticket in 2027.

PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, spoke on Arise Television’s “Morning Show”, stressing that while zoning remains an important tool for equity, it cannot override the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees all citizens the right to seek elective office.

“Even if we zone our presidential candidate to the South, it will not stop anybody from any part of the country from showing interest. We cannot do things that will contradict the Constitution of Nigeria, which is the grand norm,” Ajibade explained.

The clarification mirrors the exact argument consistently advanced by the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, which had insisted that zoning must not be weaponized to exclude competent leaders, particularly from the North. According to the group, internal party arrangements must never supersede constitutional provisions.

Reacting to PDP’s pronouncement, the South West Coordinator of the movement, Alhaji Abass Olaniyi, described the development as “a major victory for democracy and a vindication of Dr. Hashim’s ideological politics,” adding that the party had chosen the path of fairness and inclusivity.

Dr. Olawepo-Hashim, a global businessman turned politician, has been widely recognized for his issue-based politics and efforts at bridging Nigeria’s North-South divide. His rising popularity, especially in Osun State, where he is seen as more influential than President Bola Tinubu, has fueled growing speculation about his presidential ambition ahead of 2027.

With the PDP now aligning with his long-argued position, political observers believe Hashim is better positioned than ever to enter the race as a unifying figure capable of rallying Nigerians around a vision of competence, equity, and national renewal. With the PDP now aligning with his long-argued position, political observers believe Olawepo-Hashim is better positioned than ever to enter the race as a unifying figure capable of rallying Nigerians around a vision of competence, equity, and national renewal.
