Last two standing Ondo PDP lawmakers join APC

Two lawmakers from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo – Hon. Oladiji Oguntudo and Hon. Raymond Oluwatoyin Daodu – have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oguntudo, who represents Akure South Constituency I, and Daodu, the Deputy Minority Leader representing Akoko South West Constituency I, announced their defection during Thursday’s plenary session of the Ondo State House of Assembly in Akure.

The Nation report that the defection of the two lawmakers from the PDP to the APC makes it a total of 26 legislators dominating the House of Assembly with no opposition.

Speaker Olamide Oladiji presided over the plenary.

Their defection came a month after the duo resigned from the PDP, citing leadership tussles and deepening internal crises within the opposition party.

In their separate resignation letters, the lawmakers explained that their decision to join the ruling APC followed extensive consultations with family members, constituents, and political leaders, who advised them to align with the state’s governing party.

Before their defection, Oguntudo and Daodu were the last remaining PDP members.

Welcoming the new members, Speaker Oladiji commended their decision, expressing optimism that their defection would further strengthen the APC’s numerical advantage in the House.

He lauded President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and described the development as a welcome boost for the ruling party in the state.

The Speaker also praised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his progressive governance, urging the defectors to contribute meaningfully to the party’s growth and collective success.

Over 500 PDP, NNPP members defect to APC in Jigawa

No fewer than 500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sakwaya Ward, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Receiving the new members, Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Abdullahi Tsoho Garba, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to citizens’ welfare and the consolidation of Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s development agenda.

Garba highlighted the governor’s inclusive approach to governance, emphasizing progress in infrastructure, human capital development, and service delivery — all aimed at building a prosperous Jigawa State.

Ibadan convention critical to sustenance of democracy, says PDP

Former Special Duties Minister  and Deputy Chairman of the National Convention Committee, Tanimu Turaki said the 2025 elective National Convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will be the best ever convention to be organised by any political party in the country.

Turaki spoke just as National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba said the Ibadan convention was critical to the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria, which he said explains the enthusiasm and the interest being shown Nigerians across board.

Speaking at the inaugural of the Security sub-committee for the convention, the former Minister said the leadership of the party and the National Convention Planning Committee will leave any stone unturned in ensuring that whatever that can be done is done to make the convention worth the while.

He said “The success of the Convention is 85% contingent on what members of this committee will do in Ibadan.  Security is key. Security is fundamental.

“We are hopeful that at the end of the day, will come up with a convention that other political parties will see as a benchmark for holding their own conventions”.

Chairman of the Committee and Governor of Taraba state, Agbu Kefas said the job of the committee will be to ensure a hutch free convention by gathering intelligence and working hand in hand with the security agencies.

Speaking through Senator Austin Akobundu, he said the committee will ensure that the convention devoid of incursions from undesirable elements that will like to physically truncate the exercise.

Addressing journalists, Ologunagba said  Nigerians were excited and are eager to know what the party is doing, adding that “we eager to ensure that we put ourselves together as a party, because that is the only way that we can guarantee the sustenance of democracy.

“Since 1999, Nigerians can make a determination about where to stay. We had 16 years of unbroken governance by the PDP. Where we had what I always refer to and many Nigerians believed that to be the glorious era in development and hope in this country.

“Before that time, before 1999. It was difficult for this country to have recognition worldwide. We were like a paral state when the PDP came on board and set the country back on the path of development. We paid off our debts. We had double-digit GDP growth. We had inflation contained. We have policies that are invested in people in their human capital development.

“We had economy that was number one in Africa and by the time the PDP left government in 2015, we had over a $600 billion economy. Nigeria was then the number one destination for foreign capital investment and all of that has been rolled back in the last 10 years or so.”

Kaduna PDP suspends Secretary over alleged anti-party activities

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State has suspended its State Secretary, Mr Sa’idu Adamu, over allegations of gross misconduct and anti-party activities.

Mrs Maria Dogo, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, disclosed this in a statement  made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Tuesday.

Dogo said the suspension was in line with the provisions of Articles 58(1)(h) and 57(3) of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended).

She said: “The decision was reached on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, during a meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC) held at the party’s secretariat in Kaduna.

“The suspension, which takes immediate effect, will last for one month pending the outcome of investigations and subsequent decisions of the party.

“During this period, Hon. Sa’idu Adamu is hereby barred from participating in any party activity at all levels.”

The party assured members and the public of its commitment to internal discipline, fairness, and justice under the leadership of the State Chairman, Mr Edward Percy Masha.

“The ongoing efforts of the State Working Committee are aimed at strengthening the party’s structures and ensuring accountability across all ranks,” Dogo added.

PDP crisis: stop misleading public, causing division, Anyanwu tells Ologunagba

The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has cautioned the party’s Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, to desist from making statements that could mislead the public and exacerbate divisions within the party.

Ologunagba reportedly stated that Anyanwu’s role as PDP’s National Secretary is limited to administrative duties, such as managing day-to-day activities, handling correspondence, and ensuring that directives are carried out.

Ologunagba’s comments were in response to a perceived misunderstanding of roles within the party, and he emphasised that Anyanwu could not summon meetings or issue statements without authorisation.

But in a statement yesterday by his media aide, Dr. Ikenna Onuoha, the National Secretary described Ologunagba’s claims as “ridiculous and ignorant”.

He emphasised the National Secretary’s critical role in the party’s operations.

Anyanwu noted that Ologunagba’s comments indicated his lack of understanding of the party’s constitution on the duties and functions of the National Secretary.

He said: “This statement, if indeed it came from a supposed party spokesperson, is an indication that he lacks the requisite knowledge of the provisions of the party’s constitution regarding the duties, functions, and programmes of the office of the National Secretary.

“Debo Ologunagba, who ordinarily should be speaking for the party, failed to highlight the duties of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary of PDP in Section 36 (1) of the PDP Constitution 2017, as amended, simply because he was out for mischief-making.”

The statement said Anyanwu’s role is far more significant than what Ologunagba suggested, arguing that his actions were guided by the party’s constitution.

He urged Ologunagba to focus on constructive strategies to strengthen the party rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.

The statement said that despite the provocation, Anyanwu would continue to act with maturity and wisdom, upholding his oath to ensure the party’s cohesion.

  • Wike’s loyalists elect Nosa Ogieva as factional PDP chairman in Edo

Wike’s loyalists elect Nosa Ogieva as factional PDP chairman in Edo

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has elected Nosa Ogieva as its new state chairman.

The factional executive emerged at a congress held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, with 576 delegates from the state’s 192 wards participating in the exercise.

The development comes a week after another PDP faction in the state held its own congress and re-elected Tony Aziegbemi as chairman.

Addressing delegates at the Wike-backed congress, the PDP South South Vice Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, blamed former Governor Godwin Obaseki for the party’s dwindling fortunes in the state.

Orbih said the PDP’s poor performance in recent by-elections reflected its declining popularity under Obaseki’s leadership.

He urged party members to elect capable individuals who could revive the PDP in Edo State, while dismissing critics who had advised members not to attend the congress.

“Just yesterday, I saw a statement from some funny characters advising party members not to attend this event. Are you not here?” Orbih asked. “Those who have no moral authority to speak on behalf of the party should keep their mouths shut.”

“As we prepare to elect our executive, I will appeal to you to vote for those with the capacity to lead this party, not those who will sell out, not those who will deny members their legitimate right

“As members of our great party. There is no doubt that PDP is going through a leadership crisis, both at the national level and in several other states.

“Let us not deceive ourselves. For the first time in the history of our great party, we have elected governors of PDP and founding leaders, founding members of this party, leaving this party every day for one simple reason: failure of leadership.

“Elected governors are leaving. Elected senators are leaving. Elected members of the House are leaving. In Edo state, we know the root of our problem. We had a united party where everybody related with one another as brothers and sisters, until Godwin Obaseki joined our party.

“Obaseki destroyed our party. He sowed the seeds of discord, deep-rooted seeds of discord in our party. He sinned against the party. He sinned against the people. He sinned against the state.

“Obaseki came into the party and destroyed everything good in the party. Today, our party’s umbrella is shattered, torn, and we are here today to rebuild the party.

“What used to put us together as a family was destroyed by Obaseki. He fought every person except himself, and in the end, we are at a very disadvantaged position in the politics of Edo state.”

The new factional chairman promised to reunite the party, saying the PDP would soon begin to win elections again in the state.

Addressing officers, members and stakeholders at the meeting Lady Inamke Friday Sunday, the PDP Ward Women Leader stated that the PDP members in Oruk Anam particularly Ikot Ibritam Ward II install Governors, National Assembly members, State House of Assembly members and other political offices through party sweat and loyalty.

It was reported that the motion passing vote of confidence on Barr. Igwat Osagyefo Umoren the State Caretaker Chairman was moved by Ex-Officio 4 Bishop James Emmanuel James and seconded by Blessing Sunday Jumbo.

In his vote of thanks, a former councilor, Hon. Idongesit Udoetor emphatically called on the party faithfuls to take the support for Barr. Igwat Osagyefo Umoren and PDP as a personal project. “We use to work hard for others. It is now time to work for our own,” he posited.

Eminent personalities who flanked the new Akwa Ibom State PDP caretaker chairman at the meeting were Hon. Harrison Ekpo (Deputy Chairman), Enoch Godwin Enoch Esq., (State Legal Adviser), Comr. Aniekan Asukwo (State Youth Leader) And Comr. Ewa Okpo (State Publicity Secretary).

Others present at the meeting include Ubong Emmanson Udo (Ward Publicity Secretary), Comr. Esitime Udoetuk, Anietie Isonguyo Okon (Ward Treasurer), Mr. Godwin Michael Akpan (Former Treasurer), Hon. Idongesit Daniel (Member), Samuel Umoren, Unyime Uwem (Ex-Officio 1), Ufok Effiong Udo, Idiong Effiong Akpan (Ward Secretary), Anietie Dickson Umoiso (Ex-Officio 5), Emmanuel Sunday (Ward Financial Secretary), Glory Ezekiel Thompson (Ward Vice Chairman), Eno Paul Udo, Pius Ben (Ward Auditor), James Okon James (Ward Youth Leader) and Unyime Udokang (Chapter Youth Leader).

It would be recalled that the Guide Newspaper had in its latest publication this week reported that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sacked Elder Aniekan Akpan Led Exco of PDP in Akwa Ibom State.

The development was made known in a press release signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba National Publicity Secretary of the PDP.

Consequently, the NWC in a press release made available to newsmen approved the composition of a Caretaker Committee to run the affairs of the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of our Party from today, Tuesday, September 30th, 2025 for a period not exceeding 3 months or pending when a new State Executive Committee will be elected in the State.

  • Power tussle in PDP NWC deepens

Power tussle in PDP NWC deepens

Power struggle in the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) National Working Committee (NWC) has deepened the crisis in the opposition platform ahead of next month’s National Convention.

The convention, scheduled for Ibadan, Oyo State capital, is billed for November 15 and 16.

The fresh discord is triggered by the decision of the divided NWC to dissolve the Akwa Ibom State chapter and set up a caretaker committee.

While a section of the party leadership, led by the National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, approved the decision, other party officers, led by the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, voided it.

Anyanwu explained that there was no formal sitting of the NWC where the decision was ratified.

The secretary chided the Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, for misleading the Akwa Ibom chapter and the public with a fabricated decision.

Trouble started when the secretary rejected a directive from the chairman to summon the NWC meeting to deliberate on the composition of the Akwa Ibom State Executive Committee.

Ologunagba explained that a new caretaker committee for the chapter was set up to replace the state executive committee controlled by the governor, Pastor Umo Eno, who had defected from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, Anyanwu said any meeting of NWC presided by Damagum without a prior notice by him as provided by the PDP Constitution is illegal, null and void.

The secretary said that he has the constitutional duty of taking the notes of the meeting, which was not exercised.

Anyanwu, insisting that the NWC never decided on the dissolution of the leadership of the party in the state, pointed out that the National Executive Committee (NEC), and not the NWC, has the power to dissolve any state executive committee.

A letter by Anyanwu, dated October 1, and titled: “RE: Dissolution of Akwa Ibom State Working Committee,” reads: “My attention has been drawn to the purported press statement by the National Publicity Secretary (NPS) of our party, announcing the dissolution of the State Working Committee of Akwa Ibom State.

“For purposes of clarity, that press statement should be discountenanced because there was no formal sitting of the National Working Committee (NWC) in which such a decision was taken.

“It is not in the official position and duties of the national Publicity secretary to take actions relating to the implementation of the decisions of the National Working Committee of our party. As a result, the purported press statement is null and void and of no effect.

“The State Working Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State stands un-dissolved.

“Please, consider this letter as the rightful authority for you to continue in your duties as provided in the PDP Constitution 2017, as amended.”

Anyanwu is a member of the Nyesom Wike camp that has been locked in conflict with Damagum over the position of the national leadership on outstanding party issues.

Anyanwu can’t void NWC’s decision, says Ologunagba

Ologunagba said Anyanwu, who claimed to have voided the NWC’s decision, went beyond his constitutional role.

Citing the PDP Constitution, he said only the national chairman can summon any meeting of the party, adding that the 607th meeting was duly held and decisions binding on the party taken.

He said 16 of the 18 NWC members attended the meeting where the situation in the Akwa Ibom chapter was discussed and decision taken.

Ologunagba dismissed reports of a crisis between the acting national chairman and the national secretary over the conduct of congresses in some states and the setting up of a caretaker committee for the chapter.

He said it was important for every member of the NWC to understand their role as contained in the constitution to avoid violations.

The secretary, who also spoke on Channels Television last night, accused Anyanwu of promoting his personal interest

He said: “There was indeed a meeting of the NWC summoned by the national chairman in line with the constitution. It was attended by 16 of 19 members. The national secretary was absent, and having failed to issue the notice of meeting as directed by the chairman, the chairman exercised his powers under Section 29 of our constitution to summon the meeting. “Decisions were taken, including the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom executives, and I was directed to communicate same. That is what I did.”

He insisted that Anyanwu’s rejection of the decision was not in defence of party interest.

Ologunagba added: “What you are seeing is the projection of personal interest above the collective interest of the PDP. It is not in the duties of the national secretary to nullify decisions of the NWC simply because he was absent or disagrees personally,” Ologunagba declared.

Explaining why the Akwa Ibom executives were dissolved, he said the NWC acted on reports that the state structure was compromised and in open alignment with the APC.

He said: “Section 10 (6) of our constitution is clear: no member of the party shall align with other parties or groups to undermine the PDP. The Akwa Ibom executive was openly controlled by the governor, who even boasted in public that he was in charge of PDP and APC in the state. For us, that was unacceptable.”

    Ogidi: caretaker committee in order

The National Vice Chairman (Southsouth), Chief Emmanuel Ogidi defended the setting up of the caretaker committees for Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

He said: “Since the governors left, we thought all was well. We found out that a few people were taking advantage of it.  The NWC of the party intervened and set up a caretaker committee to manage the affairs, pending when the issues would be resolved. It is an NWC decision that must be respected.”

Last month, members of the group met at the minister’s official residence in Abuja, warning that failure to meet their demands would “render the proposed convention invalid as legitimate members of the party would be disenfranchised.”

At the meeting were Wike; PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu; former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose; former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu; and former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.

The meeting was also attended by the Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, Senator Phillips Aduda, Senator George Sekibo, Micah Jiba, some serving and former members of the National Assembly, as well as some state chairmen and some BoT members.

A communique read by Ortom listed the demands:

    • Fresh congresses to be held in Ebonyi and Anambra states in compliance with subsisting court judgments;

    • A new Southeast Zonal Congress must be conducted.

    • The outcome of the Southsouth Congress in Calabar, upheld by the courts, must be respected;

    • PDP should conduct the Ekiti local government congresses in line with judicial pronouncements;

    • There should be no micro-zoning of offices beyond the general zoning formula adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to maintain peace and stability;   and

    • The national chairmanship position must remain in the Northcentral, consistent with the zoning arrangement of the 2021 convention.

Before the meeting, Wike, who had spoken on the preparations for the convention on a television station programme, said: “The issue of the national convention is not the problem; the issue is the problem leading to the convention, and people should understand that.

“If they are not well taken care of, there is a likelihood that the convention will not hold.”

Wike also said the choice of venue was not in dispute, insisting that the party must resolve its internal issues before convening.

He stressed: “The venue is not the subject matter, the subject matter is: ‘Have you done what you were supposed to do before holding that convention? If not, it may be a setback.”
