  • PDP’s missed opportunity

    PDP’s missed opportunity

The fierce battle for the soul of PDP comes up at its crucial convention in two days-time. The battle line has been drawn between self- proclaiming founding fathers of the party made up of veterans of coup d’états such as Ibrahim Babangida, Aliyu Gusau and David Mark and PDP’s serving governors coordinated by Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose. There are other marginal interests made up of ex- PDP governors, opportunists and a presidential aspirant like Abubakar Atiku for whom ruling Nigeria has become an obsession.

PDP, formed in 1998 has in 18 years produced 14 chairmen through a deadly game of dog eat dog. The battle became vicious under Jonathan when in an effort to undermine the PDP zoning policy to pave way for his emergence as presidential candidate in 2011, the party produced five chairmen in quick succession: Vincent Ogbulafor (2008), Okwesilieze Nwodo (2010), Haliru Belloý Mohammed (2011), Kawu Barajeý (2011), Bamanga Tukur (2012), Adamu Mu’azu 2014). The battle for the PDP’s plum job did not get any less ferocious even with the defeat of the party in 2015. If anything, it got more vicious with the imposition of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, a total outsider whose name was not on the north-east list for the plum job by Wike and Fayose.

Either in victory or in defeat, PDP has always been at war with itself. For instance, disagreement over sharing of spoils of office after the party’s 1999 victory was followed by assassination of party members and opponents including Ahmad Sardauna Ahman Pategi, Janet Oladapo, Victor Nwakwo, Marshal Harry, Bola Ige, Aminasoari Dikibo,, Funsho Williams, Ayo Daramola, Theodore Agwatu and Andrew Agom among many others whose killings till today remain a riddle.

What is not a puzzle however are the reasons for the war of attrition and brutal killings. Unlike political parties that serve as recruitment centres for political offices and as modernisaton agents in developed democracies, PDP is an association of ‘wheelers and dealers with no identifiable ideological world-view or a coherent manifesto’. John Campbell, a former US envoy to Nigeria during a debate on Nigeria in the British House of Commons a few years back described PDP as ‘an elite cartel at the centre of power in Nigeria, a political party that came together … essentially as a club of elites for sharing of oil rents and political spoils.’

If anyone is in doubt, PDP and its members provided sufficient empirical evidence to validate Campbell’s thesis. For instance, Babangida who a few days ago proclaimed himself a founding father of PDP is widely believed to have institutionalized corruption in Nigeria. In fact President Buhari recently claimed his regime was toppled in 1985 by Babangida, Gusau and Abacha for insisting that one of the three involved in import licence scandal be brought to book.

Another PDP founding father is former vice president, Atiku Abubakar. Both President Buhari and ex-President Obasanjo recently argued that Atiku’s refusal to visit America may not be unconnected with his association with corrupt and jailed US lawmaker – William Jefferson. (Atiku however attributed his inability to visit the US to repeated denials of US visa by US authorities). At home, Atiku Abubakar is haunted by his role in the ill-implemented Nigerian privatization policy, an exercise roundly condemned by a House of Representative probe.

If further evidence is needed to consolidate Campbell’s otherwise unassailable position, we also have it on record that 17 of the 24 governors elected on the platform of PDP in 2003 were charged to court for corruption by EFCC. We can also add how desperate PDP stalwarts first created artificial fuel scarcity before stampeding President Obasanjo to  set up the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), an instrument used by PDP stalwarts and their siblings to defraud the country to the tune of N1.6 trillion under the fraudulent fuel subsidy scam.

And a critical look at the PDP candidates and their god- fathers for the Saturday battle presents no less depressing outlook. Uche Secondus is a leading contender. At a period when most part of Borno State, including military barracks,  were overran as a result Boko Haram’s superior fire power, Secondus was part of PDP leadership that allegedly converted $2.1 loan meant to cover military hardware and welfare of soldiers to war-chests for the purpose of 2015 election.   Secondus recently admitted he was drafted by Fayose who according to EFCC and Musliu Obanikoro, received N3billion out of the $2.1billion military hardware loans as war chest to fight the Ekiti State gubernatorial battle. His other sponsor, Wike along with his other South-south supporters have sworn ‘to fight to the death’ on Saturday.

Also gunning for the plum job is High Chief Dokpesi, a successful business man and media mogul. He admitted collecting N2.1b from Dasuki, ex-President Jonathan’s NSA but insisted it was payment for media publicity and special duties carried out on behalf of President Jonathan.

Also set for the battle is Gbenga Daniel who as Ogun State governor, locked up the state House of Assembly chambers and ruled as a sole administrator after chasing the state lawmakers out of town. Besides his battle with EFCC, Daniel will also be remembered for carrying ex-President Jonathan on his back on a campaign trail around Ogun State, commissioning uncompleted  or yet to take-off projects.

Another serious contender for the PDP plum job is Chief Bode George. He was part of Babangida’s South-west military administrators that in the guise of liberalization, sold off some Yoruba national patrimony including the Ikeja Cocoa industries at less than the cost of land on which the industry was built.

Another serious contender for the plum job is Professor Tunde Adeniran who as an accomplished intellectual had attempted albeit unsuccessfully to set an agenda for standard of behaviour for his fellow PDP contestants. Unfortunately his godfather, Babangida has never been known to do anything for Nigeria out of altruism. He destroyed our budding industries and turned our nation to net importer of the labour of other societies. He took the nation through a ‘transition without end’ for eight years only to annul the results of the most credible free election in our nation’s history.

Since it has been established that PDP as an association of wheelers and dealers cannot pass for a political party, Saturday’s convention would have been an opportunity for its stakeholders to reinvent the party by giving way to youths not tarred by PDP 16 years of mindless looting of the nation’s resources. Unfortunately, Saturday’s vicious battle will end the way of all past PDP’s deadly battles: as a family affair if a consensus is reached on equitable sharing of spoils of war or as vicious foes set on a war of attrition with itself. The losers  as usual will be Nigerians especially those that had hoped PDP will reinvent itself as a viable alternative to wobbling APC and President Buhari who two and half years into his administration, still depends on PDP appointees to manage some of the over 500 small governments he needed for effective governance.

  • Atiku’s daughter still in PDP

    Atiku’s daughter still in PDP

Fatima Atiku-Abubakar, daughter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, did not follow her father to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Fatima, a doctor and Adamawa State Commissioner for Health, said she is preoccupied with state duties.

Her words: “I have not resigned and I am performing my duties as the representative of the governor on health.”

Fatima, 45, is Atiku’s first child. She was appointed commissioner in August 2015.

Her rebuttal comes a day after reports said she had stepped down from Governor Jibrilla Bindow’s cabinet with seven commissioners.

It was gathered the commissioners resigned because of their loyalty to the former vice president. But at least two of the eight commissioners debunked the rumours.

Commissioner for Land and Survey Yayaji Mijinyawa, who was listed among those who resigned, denied the report.

Oyo PDP Exco endorses Ladoja for national chairmanship

The Oyo State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday endorsed a former governor of the state, Sen. Rashidi Ladoja, as its choice among those jostling for the seat of the National Chairman at the party’s national convention slated for Saturday.

The state chairman of the party, Alhaji Kunmi Mustapha, announced the endorsement and adoption after a show of hand vote, during a meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Molete, Ibadan, on Tuesday.

But another aspirant, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, said the endorsement carries no weight because he had also been endorsed by the same State Executive nine months ago.

To him, the endorsement was a mere recognition of aspirants’ move to contest the election.

Mustapha said: “On behalf of Oyo PDP, we must vote for Sen.  Ladoja come December 9. The Southwest is the rightful zone to have the chairman of our great party.

“The Southeast and the Southsouth have produced the chairmen before now and that is why it is our turn to have the national chairman.

Speaking earlier, Ladoja assured members of the party that if given the opportunity to serve, he would return the culture and tradition put in place by the founding members of the party.

Ladoja, who has been a Board of Trustees (BOT) member of the party, promised “never to compromise on things that are not right and are not in the constitution of the party.”

“I will do things the way they should be done and everybody will be happy. That was how our founding fathers were moving the party forward.”

He argued that it would be best to fortify the defence for the PDP in the South-West where it only boasts of a governor with the position of the national chairman so as to make the entire southern part of the country a home for the party.

Saraki, Kwankwaso, others should return home – PDP

The Board of Trustees of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has called on aggrieved members who left the party to follow the footsteps of former Vice President Abubakar Atiku “and return home.”

The Chairman of the board, Sen. Walid Jibrin, made the call while briefing journalists on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said “as the party joyfully welcomes Atiku back to his home PDP, we are equally waiting to receive more members.

“We are waiting for the President of the Senate, Sen. Bukola Saraki, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, other senators, members of House of Representatives and APC governors who left the PDP.

“Let all of us unite and take back power from APC come 2019.”

Ahead of the December 9 PDP Convention, Jibrin urged aspirants to develop the spirit of sportsmanship.

He urged aspirants to accept the verdict of delegates, cooperate with the winners and remain loyal to the party as power comes from God.

Jibrin said the BoT had not anointed any contestant, saying the board was ready to work with whoever emerged victorious.

“I want to assure our party members that whoever emerges as National Chairman, the BoT is ready to cooperate and work with him or her for the progress of the party.

“I will like to reiterate our position that the BoT has not anointed any candidates for now,” he said.

He commended the Judiciary for saving Nigeria’s democracy by putting and end to the crisis in the party.

I represent new face of PDP – Dokpesi

Founder of Daar Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said he represented the new face of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) where political aspirations of members would be attained.

Dokpesi, a national chairmanship aspirant of the party, stated this at a news conference in Owerri, on Wednesday as he rounded off his nationwide campaign ahead of Saturday’s national convention of the party.

He said that his leadership would mark a departure from the culture of imposition and impunity of the past, and urged Imo delegates to the convention to vote for a new beginning in the party.

“Vote for a new beginning and a new PDP that will ensure and give each member of PDP a level-playing ground to attain their dreams.

“Vote for leadership that will be respected by all and sundry, leadership of the party that will recapture power in 2019.

“That is the kind of leadership Chief Raymond Dokpesi is offering,” he said.

Dokpesi said that the party was on the rise again after its defeat in the 2015 general elections, adding that to sustain the achievement, it needed a leader who had what was required to properly project it.

In his response, Chairman of PDP in Imo, Mr Charles Ezekwem, said that the state was yet to decide on candidates to vote for at the convention.

According to Ezekwem, a collective decision on that will be made before the convention.

In his speech, Mr Chuma Nnaji, a running mate in the governorship election in the state in 2015, said that the delegates from Imo would vote for honest aspirants who understood the challenges of the state.

Nnaji described Dokpesi as one of such aspirants.

PDP raises alarm over plot to disrupt convention

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) on Wednesday alleged that some “overzealous elements” in the All Progressive Congress (APC) were planning to disrupt the party’s national convention holding on Saturday in Abuja.

Mr Dayo Adeyeye, National Publicity Secretary of the National Caretaker Committee of the party made the allegation in a news briefing in Abuja.

Adeyeye called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate and ensure that the convention was not disrupted.

He said that the president was not involved in the plot but that some members of his party were out to cause confusion.

“We have credible information that some overzealous elements in the APC Government want to disrupt the PDP national convention.

“It is not from the very top; they know that if we have a hitch-free convention, it will mark the end of APC in power.

“We call on President Buhari to investigate and ensure that those who want to disrupt the convention refrain from doing so,” he said.

According to Adeyeye, disrupting the convention is tantamount to disrupting the country’s democracy.

He urged Buhari to go the extra mile to ensure that the PDP convention was successful by providing sufficient security in and around the arena.

He stated that while PDP was in power, the party did not interrupt programmes of other political parties rather, it encouraged the growth of other parties.

Adeyeye said that accreditation for the convention would be strictly monitored, and warned that persons not accredited would not be allowed within the vicinity of the Eagles Square.

According to him, the list of accredited delegates will be made available to all aspirants at least 48 hours before the convention.

According to him, this is to clear the air as it was rumoured that the list was altered to suit selected aspirants.

Adeyeye said Osun would not participate in the national convention and that Anambra was still under consideration, following disagreements in the state.

He said that former Vice President, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, would deliver a speech the convention but may not be allowed to vote.

He announced that the Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, would meet with all chairmen of the party in the states on Friday.

He said that the meeting would hold at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja at 10 a.m. and that attendance was mandatory.

2019: APC to win in Cross River – spokesman

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Cross River has expressed confidence in its ability to win the 2019 general elections including the governorship election in the state.

Mr Mens Ikpeme, the APC Publicity Secretary in the state, expressed the confidence in an interview in Lagos.

Ikpeme said he was optimistic of the APC success because of the unimpressive performance of the government of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) in the state.

“APC in 2019 will run an issue-based campaign and focus on three core areas namely, the fight against corruption, stabilising the economy and the restoration of peace and security in Cross River State,’’ he said.

The secretary said the party would ensure that its candidates in the 2019 elections were of impeccable character and could deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

He said the party would also ensure internal democracy and conduct free and fair primaries.

“APC is the party to beat in Cross River State in the 2019 general elections. We are determined to provide democratic dividends to our people.

“APC has been sensitising the people of what is happening and the people can see for themselves that we have a government that does not serve their interest.
“Calabar used to be a beautiful place, but the streets are now being taken over by wastes.

“We are determined to move the state from its present political squalor to greatness,’’ Ikpeme said.

He said the APC-led Federal Government was fixing the country’s economy, infrastructure and rebuilding its image at the international level.

“When we took over in 2015 at the federal level, we promised Nigerians that we will fix the economy, ensure security of lives and property and fight corruption no matter who is involved, and this is what we are doing,” he said.

Convention: Don urges PDP delegates to elect people of integrity

A Don, Prof. Aloysius Okolie, has advised delegates at the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention in Abuja, to ensure the emergence of people of integrity as national executive of the party.

Okolie, a Senior Lecturer, Department of Political Science, University of Nigeria Nsukka gave the advice in an interview in Nsukka on Tuesday.

He said the quality of executive that would emerge from the convention would determine the future of PDP.

“The type of national executive elected by PDP on Saturday will make or mar the party’s progress and its ambition to reclaim power at the centre in 2019.

“The party should ensure that those that will be elected are men and women of integrity that have enviable past track records,” he said.

He also urged delegates to “resist attempt by some political money bags to buy their votes’’, adding that “such will spell doom for the party.’’

“I advise delegates to place the interest of the party first as that will help the party to enthrone dedicated, transparent and focused leadership.

“If the delegates have the interest of the party at heart, they must shun all forms of financial inducement and vote according to their conscience.”

The don also said the character of whosoever emerged as the PDP national chairman would determine the level of discipline and internal democracy in the party.

“For any political party to survive as well as remain relevant there must be discipline and internal democracy that will give hope to aspirations of party members.

“Absence of disciplinary and internal democracy have ruined many political parties and resulted in some members acting with impunity as if the party is their personal enterprise.

“Saturday’s convention is an opportunity for PDP to get it right and correct its past mistakes, this will strengthen and reposition the party.”

PDP chair: Lagos chapter endorses Bode George

The Lagos State Chapter of the PDP on Sunday night endorsed Chief Olabode George as their preferred candidate for the National Chairmanship position during the forthcoming  December 9 National Convention of the party.

Dr Moshood Salvador, the State Chairman of PDP, gave the certification at a feedback meeting between George and members of the party, held at the party’s secretariat in GRA, Ikeja.

Reports say that George had been on campaign in the Southern states of the country to seek support for votes ahead of the National Convention.

There are about eight aspirants jostling for the National chairmanship seat of the party from the south.

They include: the former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniel, former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran.

Others are: the former Minister of Youth Development, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja and former Lagos State PDP governorship candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje, Prince Uche Secondus, a former acting National Chairman of PDP, and Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

Salvador said: “ On behalf of Lagos PDP, we must vote for Chief Bode George come December 9;  the South west is the rightful region to have the chairman of our great party.

“In the last dispensation, Ekiti produced the Vice- Chairman while Osun and Oyo states took the highest office. It is only Lagos that is left and what we want is the chairman.

“The South-east and the South-south have produced a chairman before that is why it is our turn to have the chairman of PDP,’’ he said.

Earlier, George assured members that if given the opportunity to serve, he would re-establish the culture and tradition put in place by the founding fathers of  the PDP.

“If I am given the opportunity, I will not be new to the management of this party because the party’s constitution is not going to be new to me; I know its provisions as I know the back of my hand.

“We grew up with the party and the founding fathers handed over the culture of the party to us and that is what we would re-establish.

“Just check out, from the end of our convention to the national election is a very short time, it is not a time where you can do experimentation, it is not a time you can bring a green horn to be the chairman of the party.

“If you are desirous that you want to win that election, on that day before you cast your votes search your consciences and think very carefully.

“Secondly, it is not a matter of life and death, if I don’t believe that I have anything to offer, I will not be here.

“I will not compromise on things that are not right and are not in the constitution.

“ I will do things the way they should be done and everybody will be happy. That was how our founding fathers were moving the party forward ,’’ George said.

Atiku’s return will add value to rebuilding party – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) has said that the return of the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, would add value to the process of rebuilding the party for greater heights.

In a statement issued by Mr Dayo Adeyeye, National Publicity Secretary of its National Caretaker Committee, the party described the return of Abubakar as “welcome development”.

“We are indeed glad that he has realized the unbridled lies and deceit of his former party, the All Progressive Congress (APC).

“The PDP remains his home; a house he was part of building and which he helped to nurture. We believe his return will add value to the process of rebuilding our party to greater heights.

“This is another milestone recorded by the current leadership of our party in its quest to reconcile, rebuild and restructure the PDP ahead of the 2019 general elections and beyond.

“We will continue to remain transparent and dedicated to the service of this party,” the statement said.

The party called on all its members still in the APC or other parties as well as others frustrated in the party to return.

“Anyone who is desirous of a return to
the era of abundance and freedom under the PDP administration is welcome.

“The Umbrella is big enough to accommodate all.”

The PDP urged members nationwide to come together as one family “as we march to Eagle Square, Abuja, on Saturday and Sunday to elect new leaders who will manage the affairs of our party at the national level. (NAN)
