By-election: PDP, APC woo voters in Edo

The Peoples Democratic Party (P) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have continued to woo voters in seven local government areas where by-elections will be held next Saturday.

Both parties have embarked on door-to-door campaigns to mobilise voters to troop out en masse to exercise their franchise.

A total of nine political parties fielded candidates for the election, but only the PDP and the APC have been seen in active campaigns

The PDP, which flagged off its campaign on Thursday, said it would win in all five local government areas that make up the Edo Central senatorial district.

Speaking at Uromi, headquarters of the Esan North East Local government area, governorship candidate of the party in last year’s governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, urged the people to surprise the opponents by voting for the candidate of the party, Prince Joe Okojie.

According to him, “Since 2023, we haven’t had a representative in the Senate. Esanlan has been known for people of intellectual capability and strength. We don’t want the world to see Esan land as a place where we don’t go to school.

“We must get the best person to represent us as Esan people. The time has come for us to tell the world we will not make the same mistake. The Esan people know what is best, what is proper and what is good. Collect their money and vote for what is right.”

Prince Okojie assured the electorate that he would deliver real dividends of democracy.

Governor Monday Okpeholo, who led the APC campaign in Edo Central, said a vote for the party would usher in a new era of development and progress across the region.

Speaking in Ewohimi, Awu and Ubiaja communities in Esan South East Local Government Area, Governor Okpebholo said the time had come for Esan people to take their destiny into their own hands by supporting one of their own.

Represented by the APC Senatorial Leader, Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd), Governor Okpebholo described the by-election as a crucial test of the Esan people’s commitment to consolidating power and attracting dividends of democracy.

He urged voters to come out en masse and vote for the APC candidate, Hon. Joseph Ikpea.

The PDP is yet to flag off its campaign in Ovia Federal constituency, but the APC candidate, Barr. Omosede Igbinedion visited Oghede and Oduna communities.

At both communities, Barr. Igbinedion announced a scholarship to two girls.

She assured that she would work with the state government to ensure roads leading to the communities were constructed.

2027: PDP expresses worry over members’ increasing endorsement of Tinubu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over the growing wave of endorsements for President Bola Tinubu by some state chapters and prominent party figures, describing the trend as anti-party activity capable of damaging the party’s unity and electoral prospects.

In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, the party’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said such actions have led to division, disaffection, and a worrying exodus of influential members.

He warned that if left unchecked, the situation could significantly erode the party’s strength ahead of future elections.

To address the situation, the PDP had earlier set up a national disciplinary committee led by High Chief Tom Ikimi.

However, internal contradictions have emerged, as Ikimi—who previously accused the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, of anti-party activities—is now reported to be appearing at events organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alongside other Atiku Abubakar loyalists.

The Ambassador Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) has now moved to enforce stricter disciplinary measures.

It is threatening sanctions against high-profile members, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and PDP chapters in states such as Osun and Lagos, who are openly endorsing Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election.

Although Wike was not directly named in Ologunagba’s statement, sources within the party indicate that many within the PDP leadership are increasingly discontented with him and his loyalists.

The statement, titled “PDP NWC reprimands members over anti-party activities …warns members endorsing Tinubu will face stiff sanctions”, underscored the seriousness of the matter. Ologunagba said the pro-Tinubu declarations violate the PDP constitution and tarnish the party’s image, warranting immediate disciplinary action.

“Of serious concern is the persistent public media outbursts against our Party by some prominent members whose actions and utterances including their public declaration of support and willingness to work for the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 Presidential election in violation of the provision of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017) constitute a serious threat to the stability and sustenance of our Party.

“Specifically, Section 10 (6) of the PDP Constitution provides that “No MEMBER of the Party SHALL align with other Parties or groups to undermine the Party or any of its elected government”.

“In the light of the foregoing and the instance of protecting and preserving the existence of our Party and its electoral fortune, the NWC, pursuant to the provisions of Section 59 (1) of the PDP Constitution hereby issues a strong reprimand against such anti-party activities and cautions those involved to retrace their steps or face stiffer sanctions as provided in the PDP Constitution.

“The NWC charges all members of the Party to remain loyal, focused and continue to work assiduously towards the successful conduct of the PDP National Convention scheduled to hold on the 15th and 16th November, 2025, in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital,” Ologunagba stated.

Southwest PDP appoints interim committee for Ekiti branch

Southwest chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed an interim committee to oversee the party’s affairs in Ekiti State.

In a statement issued at the end of its meeting yesterday by the party’s Zonal Secretary, Olumuyiwa Obanewa, Southwest PDP said the decision was made in accordance with the party’s constitution and in concurrence with National Working Committee (NWC) and Southwest PDP Governors.

The interim committee is headed by the Southwest PDP Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati as chairman, Mrs Lanre Fajuyi (secretary) and Chief Adeola Ogunrinde.

The statement said the party also constituted a five-member fact-finding panel to assess the current state of the party in Ekiti State and submit a detailed report to the party’s NWC.

The fact-finding committee is chaired by Olumuyiwa Obanewa. Other members include Seyi Bamidele, Benson Amuwa, Mrs. Oluwakemi Bello and Chief Tunji Adeyemo.

The party directed the committees to assume office immediately and begin groundwork in anticipation of the arrival of national interface committee from the PDP national secretariat.

The PDP Southwest lauded the outgoing Ekiti State caretaker committee led by Chief Dare Adeleke, for their dedication and efforts in repositioning the party in Ekiti State.

The party restated its commitment to unity, justice and internal democracy, as it strengthens its structures across the zone in preparation for future electoral successes.

2027: Shun zoning, field candidate with national appeal, Wudilawa tells PDP

The coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Vanguard in the North West, Hon. Aminu Bala Wudilawa, has urged the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to resist blackmail and pressure to hand over its 2027 presidential ticket to any regional political heavyweight under the guise of zoning or power rotation.

Speaking through a statement issued on Wednesday Mallam Wudilawa warned that zoning has inflicted significant damage on Nigeria’s national psyche, stressing that democracy should be driven by popular choice, not a “turn-by-turn” mentality.

He maintained that the PDP’s path to victory in 2027 lies in presenting a candidate with broad-based national appeal who can attract votes from both the North and South, rather than relying on regional sentiment.

“Any candidate that cannot win an open, competitive primary by building national consensus has no chance of winning the general election,” he asserted.

Wudilawa described Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as the kind of leader Nigeria needs—one with the character, competence, and values to lead the nation at this critical point in its history.

“Liberal and patriotic forces in the North are rallying around Gbenga Hashim not because of political sentiment, but because of his broad national appeal, integrity, and long standing commitment to democracy and unity,” he said. “He is a candidate both the North and South can trust.”

Highlighting Gbenga Hashim’s track record, Aminu noted that in the past eight years, no aspirant across PDP or APC has demonstrated deeper insight into national security and economic reform than Dr. Hashim.

He also dismissed the often repeated claim that the PDP presidential ticket in 1999 was zoned to the South, clarifying that General Olusegun Obasanjo emerged not by zoning, but by his strong reputation for national unity following military rule.

“Opportunistic politicians often distort history, but the truth is that Obasanjo was chosen in 1999 because of his commitment to the unity of Nigeria. Today, we see that same spirit in Gbenga Hashim.”

As the political terrain shifts toward 2027, the Gbenga Hashim Vanguard has reaffirmed its commitment to mobilizing support nationwide for a pan-Nigerian presidential agenda, one that prioritizes unity, development, and democratic values above ethnic or regional calculation.

  • Kwara PDP loses members to APC, ADC

Kwara PDP loses members to APC, ADC

A wave of defection has hit Kwara State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Prominent members of the party led by ex-Kwara State governor, AbdulFatah Ahmed, have defected to African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The move by the defectors is seen as one of the biggest setbacks for the PDP in the state.

Although former governor Ahmed has not officially announced his defection, he was quoted to have said last month that he would leave PDP for ADC.

Citing a “lack of vision and internal democracy”, Ahmed reportedly said  the party could no longer deliver on the aspirations of its members.

Bolaji Abdullahi, PDP’s 2023 senatorial candidate for Kwara Central and a former All Progressives Congress (APC) national publicity secretary, also joined ADC.

In a speech in Ilorin, Abdullahi accused the PDP of “stagnation” and called the ADC “the only viable opposition in Kwara.”

Other politicians that dumped PDP for ADC include Amuda Kanike, a former member of the House of Representatives; Hajiya Nana Suleiman, PDP North-Central zonal women leader; and A.T. Asanloko, a former council secretary.

They said PDP’s leadership had failed to provide opportunities for inclusion and growth.

Similarly, the 2023 PDP deputy governorship candidate and a two- term member of the House of Representatives, Gbenga Makanjuola, has joined the defection train by pitching his tent with the ruling APC in the state.

He resigned from the PDP last year, keeping his next move then under wrap.

But at a rally last week in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state, Makanjuola said the PDP had “lost its soul” and that ‘’Kwara’s future lies in a party that works for the people.”

Also, 2023 PDP House of Representatives candidate Dare Bankole has announced his defection to APC.

Makanjuola and Bankole had pledged support for Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s development agenda.

Others who had defected to the APC include Wahab Issa, a former member of the House of Representatives; Kehinde Alex Bankole, a 2019 state constituency candidate; Haliru Dantsoho, former PDP youth leader; Adam Zakaria, a ward chairman; Toyin Ibrahim, a former councillor; Samson Osoba, a former council secretary in Oyun; and Joshua Jalalala, a former Oyun Local Government chairman.

Governor AbdulRazaq has welcomed the defectors, describing their decision as a vote of confidence in his administration.

At a rally in Kaiama, he said: “Kwara is moving forward, and the APC is the vehicle for progress. We welcome all who share our vision.”

For the PDP, the fallout has been severe. Many grassroots leaders, councillors and organisers who have formed the backbone of the party’s political structure in the state have abandoned it. With the departure of such a large number of leaders and their followers, observers say the PDP faces an uphill battle to remain relevant.

2027: Ogun PDP affirms support for Tinubu

…says APC candidate stands no chance in Remo bye-election

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that its recent endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is strictly for his 2027 re-election bid and not an endorsement of Governor Dapo Abiodun or the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the August 16 Remo Federal Constituency bye-election.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, PDP Publicity Secretary, Arc. Kayode Adebayo, said efforts by individuals believed to be loyal to Governor Abiodun to misrepresent the party’s position were deliberate attempts to mislead the public.

Adebayo emphasized that the endorsement of Tinubu should not be misconstrued as support for the APC’s candidate in the forthcoming bye-election, insisting that the PDP remains firmly behind its candidate, Asiwaju Bolarinwa Oluwole.

“The bye-election has no connection whatsoever with Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign,” he stated. “Our endorsement of the president does not translate into backing the APC in the August 16 poll.”

He accused the APC of twisting the narrative surrounding the PDP’s campaign flag-off, saying it was a desperate attempt to distract from Governor Abiodun’s alleged poor performance and waning popularity in the state.

Adebayo also cited Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) records from the 2023 elections, which showed that Governor Abiodun lost both his polling unit and ward to the PDP, as evidence of the APC’s declining influence.

He dismissed any attempt to link Tinubu’s endorsement to the local bye-election as “a political mirage,” and called on the ruling party to focus on credible governance rather than propaganda.

Reaffirming the PDP’s stance, he said: “Asiwaju Bolarinwa Oluwole remains our candidate. No amount of propaganda, threats, or misinformation will deter the people of Remoland from making their voices heard on August 16.”

Adebayo concluded by warning against any use of state power or intimidation during the election, urging Governor Abiodun and his supporters to allow a free, fair, and credible process to unfold.

  • PDP: Gana’s moonlight tales

    PDP: Gana’s moonlight tales

It would appear a fashionable national curse here to wax poetic over the past, in the sweet belief that it would — indeed, must — always be better than the present, and indeed the future.  That’s not backed by facts.

On the positive side: Lagos has not solved all of its problem — it probably never will.  Which entity ever solves all of its problems?

But between pre-1999 Lagos and Lagos of 2025, there have been some spectacular changes.  Better security, for one: whoever hears of daylight robberies these days? Transport infrastructure for another: witness Blue and Red rail lines — and the Green line (CMS to Lekki) in the nursery.

On the negative side: By the advent of 1999, PDP was the all-conquering power behemoth.  Today, it screeches, to be heard, as the most formidable opposition party, matched against the wannabes: like Peter Obi’s Labour Party (LP) and David Mark’s — no thanks to a hostile take-over — African Democratic Congress (ADC), huffing and puffing, punching above their weight and making insane boasts about the 2017 polls.

Incidentally, both Obi and Mark were sad parts of the spectacular collapse of PDP.  Mark was its last Senate president as the ruling party (2007-2015).  Obi chased shadows as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate (2019) in an abortive search for the presidency.  That trio — Atiku, Mark and Obi — now lead the charge against their grand old party, towards sweepstakes 2027!

That, by the way, wasn’t accidental.  They were all true sons of their political father — PDP: with its sole and fanatical principle of power and power alone: PDP… PAWA!

Which made it surprising, Prof. Jerry Gana’s new sweet spin that PDP wasn’t just put together to push for and corral power, and pretty nothing else.

Gana, to a PDP ensemble, the Consultative Conference of PDP Founding Fathers and Stakeholders, in Abuja: “In forming the PDP in 1998, the founding fathers were profoundly moved by timeless principles, deep-rooted values and fundamental objectives.  Those leaders did not gather just to capture power … We had very clear ideals and values and principles …” Hear!  Hear!

What gas!  Gana can tell all those to the marines!  Even if the alluring aroma of inevitable power lulled the beneficiaries of the Army Arrangement of 1998 into thinking beyond just grabbing power, their scandalous behaviour all through their best forgotten power years pointed to the contrary.

Double tragedy: Olusegun Obasanjo, elected on the PDP ticket as first president in 1999, left no doubt about devotion to self as against the collective, despite his holy hypocrisy.

Gana and co, of course can push their democratic rights to sweet yarn.  But for a fallen elephant hoping to rise again, it had better correctly x-ray whatever sent it crashing down.  Gana’s tale by the moonlight certainly isn’t it.

  • PDP heads for another crisis over congresses

PDP heads for another crisis over congresses

    • Atiku left PDP in frustration, says Wike • Damagum, Anyanwu, others to vacate office Dec 8

Another round of crisis may be brewing in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the outcome of some of its congresses.

Ahead of the November 14 convention in Ibadan where new national officers of the party will be elected, congresses have been held at the ward, local government and geo-political zone levels.

Among these are the would-be delegates to the convention.

But Minister of Feral Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike yesterday queried the Southeast zonal election, saying it should not stand.

He warned that the zonal election in his Southsouth zone, which some leaders of the party have challenged, must not be tampered with.

Chief Dan Orbih from Edo State was elected as the National Vice Chairman (Southsouth) during the congress held at Calabar in March.

Acting Chairman, Umar Damagum, said the results cannot be upheld because the zonal governors did not support that congress.

Wike, who rejected Damagum’s claim, said his insistence on the cancellation of the congress may spark a fresh crisis in the party.

Also, the minister said the Southeast Congress that produced Ali Odefa as National Vice Chairman (Southeast) cannot stand because the court had ruled that he was no longer a party member.

Wike spoke on the challenges before the PDP ahead of its planned November 15 Convention during the August edition of his monthly media chat on television in Abuja.

According to the timetable for the congresses and convention, Damagum, National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) are expected to hand over the baton on December 8.

    Congresses spark crisis

Wike, who spoke for the first time after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his camp defected from the PDP to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said the crisis may be over following their exit.

He described the defectors as “buccaneers and vampires,” stressing that his firm resistance against impunity led to the shedding of PDP’s excess baggage.

Noting that Atiku is obsessed with getting the presidential ticket of any party, Wike said he left because there was no room for him to get the PDP flag.

The minister, however, insisted that the outcome of the recent Southsouth Zonal Congress, which produced Orbih as National Vice Chairman, must be accepted to avoid another crisis.

He said: “I said I was going to remain in the PDP, and that was why I said the right thing must be done.

“I will not leave this party, which I have done everything for, for the buccaneers and vampires.

“If I had left the party, the buccaneers and vampires would have remained in PDP to come and collect the ticket.”

To avoid a fresh crisis, Wike said the controversy over the Southsouth and Southeast congresses should be resolved.

He said: “Well, it is over for now because there are still some things remaining which I have told them they must do.

“One is our Southsouth Zonal Congress, which we must uphold. There is no two ways about it.

“During our Southsouth Zonal Congress, the acting National Chairman claimed that the PDP governors were not in support of that zonal Congress. Where are the PDP governors today?

“Our Congress was held in Calabar, and there is nothing anybody can tell us. If they want another round of crisis, so be it. That Congress must be. Chief Dan Orbih emerged as National Vice Chairman.

“The courts allowed for congress to hold. A congress was held, and the so-called Acting National Chairman of the party wrote to INEC after the congress had taken place, stating that the congress had been postponed.

“Something was held on the 5th and then on the 8th, you said it has been postponed. So, there is no two ways about it.

“The National Vice Chairman of the PDP Southsouth is Chief Dan Orbih. If they don’t agree, that is another round to the crisis”.

The minister added that the Southeast Congress, which produced Odefa, cannot stand because the courts had affirmed that he was no longer a member of the party.

He said his team will not allow any reign of impunity in the PDP, urging the leadership to resolve the issues before the November convention.

Wike stressed: “These are people who, in all their political nature, and we know from the campaigns, are going from one party to the other.

“So, every political period, you form a coalition. Here we see some people who have joined ADC. It is okay.

“This is not the first time they have joined new parties. It is in their bloodstream that this is what they are going to do. You can’t change it.

“I think he (Atiku) was in the PDP in 1999. Then he joined AC. The AC/ACN was controlled by whom? By the incumbent President now.

“Now, what happened to him? Later, he came back to the PDP. Then what happened? He moved again to APC.

“From APC, he returned to the PDP, only to secure presidential tickets every time. Then, from the PDP now, he has gone away again. ADC.

“All this has to do with presidential ambition. ‘Can I get my ticket? The way PDP is now, it is not likely that I will get a ticket’.

“Then he goes to tell you: ‘Let us come together, let us form a coalition against the people’. It is because he cannot get the presidential ticket under PDP.”

Wike also explained how he led some PDP stakeholders to reject a recommendation that former Senate President David Mark, who is the ADC National Chairman, be made the National Chairman of the PDP.

He recalled: “When we started having this issue of the national chairman in the Northcentral, there was pressure that David Mark should be the national chairman. We refused. Why?

“Why would we not refuse? What change will it bring to the party? If he were Senate President for eight years, what were the things that happened? What is the improvement?

“I have told you here. I prefer somebody who has not had any position who has come to tell me, ‘Look, I am doing this because of this government, I want to help for a change to achieve this and that.

“I will not listen to anybody who has been in power for years, who has refused to contribute anything to the development of the country. And now you come to tell me this story that ‘look, we need to rescue this country’. You were there. The country was sinking. You didn’t rescue.”

Wike urged critics to applaud the administration of President Bola Ahmed for the dividends of democracy.

He said detractors were either misinformed or intentionally ignoring the facts about the scope and direction of the FCT’s development under the Tinubu Administration.

Wike said: “We engage stakeholders. I am not bothered that they said the provider of the infrastructure is showcasing. Can you provide infrastructure without urban planning?”

He recalled his administration’s efforts to engage grassroots communities across the FCT’s six area councils, saying that those consultations directly informed policy and project priorities.

Wike said: “When we came on board, we visited the six area councils. We sat with the youths, traditional rulers and the women. That was the first time that the stakeholders said: ‘This is our priority.’”

He said the collaborative process led to the establishment of a Youth Secretariat and a Women’s Secretariat in Abuja.

Wike added: “What are people talking about, non-engagement with stakeholders? Who are the stakeholders? There has been engagement, and stakeholders’ input drives the economy of any country.

“What brings investors? Will investors bring infrastructure and broadband? These are the primary things that investors will see and come and say: ‘I want to establish a private university, hospital, or agricultural factory.

“People criticise when they don’t have anything to say. My people say: ‘When you don’t have anything to say against somebody, you say: ‘See as him be.’”

Wike said performance should be recognised regardless of personal bias, adding: “You must appreciate when a government has done well; you don’t need to like the person in charge.

“This is a government that inherited so many issues. Something that hasn’t happened in 10 years since 1999, you expect someone to do it in two years? It can’t be done.”

In a statement titled: ‘Timetable and schedule of activity for year 2025 elective national convention and schedule of activities for year 2025 elective national convention,’ the PDP National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, said the various committees for a hitch-free exercise would be set up soon.

He said a meeting of the NWC has been slated for August 24 to deliberate on the agenda before the 102nd  National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on August 25.

Bature explained that the National Caucus meeting would also be held in Abuja on the same day, while the date for the Board of Trustees (BoT)’s meeting would be decided later.

The Organising Secretary said the NEC meeting would review and adopt the resolutions of the PDP Zoning Committee.

Also, between August 26 and September 1, the Zonal Executive Committees (ZECs) in the six geo-political zones are scheduled to hold consultations on nominations for the party offices zoned to the respective regions.

Bature said between September 3 and 22, the PDP Directorate of Finance would undertake the sale of Nomination and the Expression of Interest forms to aspirants for various national offices, which must be submitted to the party’s national secretariat on or before September 26.

The party official said the forms would be processed and forwarded to the PDP Screening Committee for vetting.

On September 30, aspirants are mandated to appear before the PDP Screening Committee at the national secretariat.

Bature said the list of cleared aspirants would be released and certificates of clearance issued to them on October 1.

He said aggrieved aspirants would have the right of appeal on October 6, adding that the final list of cleared aspirants would be published on October 10.

We’re behind Tinubu for 2027 – Ogun PDP

Ogun chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has thrown its weight behind the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Ogun PDP chairman , Hon. Abayomi Tella, made this known on Monday at the inauguration of the campaign council and official campaign flag off  of its candidate for House of Representatives, Remo Federal Constituency bye-election August 16.

The Remo Federal Constituency became vacant following the death of Deputy Chief Whip, Hon Adewunmi Onanuga, last January.

Tella who unveiled Hon. Bolarinwa Oluwole as the candidate, noted that the South West PDP is unanimously disposed to support the President Tinubu to actualise his re- election bid.

He described President Tinubu as the ‘father of the nation,’ saying this also informed the propriety of rallying round him to retain the reins of power till 2031.

Tella urged party faithful to come out en mass to participate in the bye-election, and not to succumbed to intimidation or harassment by anybody or group throughout the electoral process.

“We are not going to submit to any harassment or intimidation on Saturday.  The election is a win win for the party. This constituency is our stronghold and this was evident in the outcome of the 2023 election. Our party defeated the seating governor in his ward. They will record defeat as far as this election is concerned,” he said.

National Vice Chairman, Hon Kamorudeen Ajisafe, before presenting the party’s flag to Oluwole, said the Southwest Zonal Secretariat has momentarily been moved to Ogun State for the purpose of mobilising support the party candidate in the bye-election.

The governorship candidate of the party in 2023, Hon Oladipupo Adebutu, said the party is supporting Tinubu’s reelection to ensure that the bye election is free, fair and credible.
