2027: PDP’s boasts empty, mere illusion – APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the boasts by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unseat it in the 2027 general elections as empty and mere illusion.

The Lagos State APC Spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo, made this remark in a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oladejo was reacting to a recent claim by PDP that only the former ruling party had the “structure and strength” to unseat APC in the 2027 general elections.

He said that such ‘political daydreaming’ should ordinarily be dismissed as the routine rhetoric of an opposition party desperate to stay relevant.

Oladejo, however, added for the benefit of the public and in defence of facts over fiction, APC had found it necessary to set the record straight.

“PDP’s claim of possessing the structure and strength to defeat APC is both laughable and detached from the current political reality in Nigeria.

“What structure is the PDP referring to — the same disjointed, crisis-ridden and fragmented formation that has failed to present a united front since 2015?

“Or the same “strength” that has led to serial losses at the polls, mass defections of key figures and internal implosions across states?

“It is clear that the PDP is yet to recover from the political rejection it suffered over the past decade — a rejection rooted in its legacy of corruption, impunity and squandered national opportunities.

“Nigerians have not forgotten the 16 years of PDP misrule that left our nation economically vulnerable, infrastructurally backward and institutionally weakened,” he said.

The APC spokesperson said that in contrast, APC remained the most formidable political movement in Nigeria today, grounded in progressive ideals, national unity and result-driven leadership.

“From Lagos to Borno, Rivers to Kano, APC’s policies and people-centric governance continue to win the trust and support of Nigerians at all levels,” he said.

Oladejo described the 2023 elections as a reaffirmation of APC’s national spread and deep grassroots connection.

“The same Nigerians who gave us their mandate then are witnesses to the significant strides being made by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration — particularly in economic reform, infrastructural renewal, digital transformation and national security.

“While PDP continues to operate in the echo chambers of political nostalgia, APC is busy rebuilding Nigeria and expanding its reach.

“If PDP believes its press statements and internal wishful thinking can substitute for credible leadership, national cohesion and visionary planning, then it clearly hasn’t learned anything from its past electoral humiliations,” he added.

According to him, PDP should focus on resolving its internal crises rather than issuing ‘hollow statements’ about 2027.

“Nigeria deserves a credible opposition, not a party still chasing the shadow of its lost glory.

“Come 2027, APC will again present to Nigerians a record of achievements, a unity of purpose and a future of promise — not the empty boasts and recycled faces of yesterday’s failures,” Oladejo said. (NAN)

    • Mark, Aregbesola take oaths of office

Opposition parties – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) are locked in supremacy battle.

Following a dig at the PDP by the ADC, the former ruling party yesterday fired back at the ADC now taken over by coalition politicians led by Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP accused some ADC members of being ‘’known agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’’ whose goal was to dislodge the ruling party from power in 2027.

It specifically referred to ADC spokesman  Bolaji Abdullahi, whom it described as an APC-indoctrinated individual, as being pivotal to the ADC attacks

Abdullahi  had  told a national television station that the PDP can hardly play an opposition role effectively because it was never designed to function as an opposition party

“PDP wasn’t built to be an opposition party; it was built to govern. So when it found itself in a strange place in 2015, everything began to spiral downward,”  Abdullahi, a former minister said.

But in a statement yesterday by its  National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP described  Abdullahi’s comments as reckless and revealing.

The PDP accused him of acting out a script to try to derail its growing momentum as the nation’s main opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party said   ‘’the APC-indoctrinated Abdullahi ought to give more attention to the ruling party as a former insider than attacking the PDP.

The statement reads:  “The PDP, as the leading opposition party, commanding the respect, loyalty and solidarity of overwhelming majority of Nigerians across the country and which is also the broad-based platform driving the aspiration of Nigerians to oust the APC in 2027 will not descend to join issues with the ADC or any other opposition party in the country for that matter.’’

The PDP said in spite of the defection of some of its members in recent months, it remained firmly rooted across the country with an “organic support base” that no media attacks by  ADC or any other party can undermine.

It said: “Moreover, it is instructive to state that the PDP, as presently constituted, has more than enough presidential personalities with clear records of achievement and capacity to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at any time”

Mark, Aregbesola, Lawal, others take over ADC leadership

Former Senate President David Mark, ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, and General Tunde Ogbeha (rtd) have assumed key leadership roles in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

They became members of the party’s newly inaugurated National Working Committee (NWC) yesterday.

Former Edo State Governor Oserheimen Osunbor is the National Legal Adviser.

On July 1st, the opposition coalition announced the adoption of the ADC as the platform to contest in 2027.

It announced Mark as Interim National Chairman, Aregbesola as Interim National Secretary and Abdullahi as Interim Publicity Secretary.

Nwosu announced his resignation at the event attended by leading opposition figures in the country.

The day after, Nwosu wrote to INEC convening yesterday’s NEC meeting .

Yesterday’s NEC paved the way for the disengagement of Nwosu-led NWC and replacement with the new members.

How the NEC brought in Mark, others

They NEC meeting was held at an Abuja hotel.

At 7:11 pm, Razak Eyiowuawi, South West Zonal Chairman, moved a motion for the resignation of members of Ralph Nwosu-led NWC.

Kabiru Garba, Zamfara State Chairman, seconded it, and the motion was approved in a voice vote.

At 7:25 pm, the former National Organising Secretary, Ibrahim Sulieman, moved the motion for the dissolution of the Nwosu-led NWC in accordance with Article 19(12)(vii) and 19(14)(s) of the ADC 2022 constitution.

It was seconded by Charles Omidiji from Osun State.

The motion was put to a voice vote, and it was carried.

A members of the party said last night that the dissolution of the Nwosu-led NWC and the takeover by the Mark-led team is contrary to the constitution of the party.

According to him: “Article 23, Clause 4 of the ADC Constitution states that If a vacancy arises in any party office, the appropriate Executive Committee shall appoint a replacement from the same zone or constituency as the outgoing office holder.

“This appointment is to remain in effect until a new election is conducted at the next congress or convention.

“Another provision of the party’s constitution is that for anybody to hold an executive office, he must have stayed for two years in the party.”

At 7:52 p.m., the new NWC members took the oath of office and were sworn in by the former National Legal Adviser, Peters Iyiola Oyewole.

The NEC meeting and subsequent event was witnessed  by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

All newly appointed official were present during the brief ceremony.

In his acceptance speech, Mark warned that the new leadership would not tolerate anti-party activities by members.

Noting that structural reforms would be carried out, Mark emphasised building a competent party bureaucracy, sustainable financing mechanisms, and zero tolerance for indiscipline.

“We will build a technically competent bureaucracy for the party and ensure structured financing. All members will truly own the party.

He stressed that the new leadership would be anchored on collective decision-making and full adherence to democratic ideals, adding: “We shall be committed to full democratic practices and principles that abhor imposition and special privileges.

“Internal democracy, transparency, and accountability will be our mantra. We will guarantee collective leadership at all levels.”

“We will open the gates for the next generation. Our policies, nominations, and leadership roles will reflect meaningful inclusion of youths and women and not just tokenism.

Mark commended the Nwosu-led NEC for the job it did for nurturing the party to the level it attained today.

The party also announced that it would field candidates in the 15 constituencies for the forthcoming by-elections.

The new NEC would hold its inaugural meeting today.

More than 500 NEC members from across the country filled the hall in a lively atmosphere.

Before bowing out, Nwosu said: “This is not just a NEC meeting; this is a moment for us to reflect and decide our way forward. It is a rebirth.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, told The Nation that inclusivity is a core focus of the new leadership and would be actively pursued.

By-election: PDP calls for redeployment of Edo REC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state has expressed worry over the credibility and impartiality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in next month’s by-election to fill vancant positions in the National Assembly.

It called for the urgent redeployment of the Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Anugbum Onuaha, and other electoral officers previously assigned to key local government areas.

Chairman of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, who spoke at a press briefing in Benin City, sais the party was prepared for the by-election in Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency.

Aziegbemi, who expressed confidence in the party’s candidates, Prince Joe Okojie and Johnny Ikponmwosa Aikpitanyi, said the PDP has grassroots strength.

He said the party does not believe the Edo REC would be impartial in the conduct of the election.

Aziegbemi said the continued presence of the electoral officers threatened public trust in the electoral process.

He said, “The party’s resolve to uphold the principle of “One Man, One Vote”.

“We insist on a fair, credible, and transparent election and urge INEC, security agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure that every citizen’s vote counts and is protected.”

  • PDP, not APC, mortgaged Nigeria’s future — Okechukwu

PDP, not APC, mortgaged Nigeria’s future — Okechukwu

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has blamed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for allegedly mortgaging Nigeria’s future, dismissing recent criticisms by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The ADC had accused the federal government of “fiscal vandalism” following the National Assembly’s approval of $21 billion in foreign loans, warning that Nigeria’s public debt could exceed N200 trillion by year-end without commensurate economic gains.

Reacting to the allegation during a media chat in Enugu on Sunday, Okechukwu argued that the PDP’s past actions, especially its handling of the power sector, laid the foundation for Nigeria’s current economic woes.

“My candid position is that it was PDP vandals who truly mortgaged Nigeria’s future through their non-transparent privatisation of the electricity sector,” he said.

He criticised the ADC for ignoring what he described as the “fiscal vandalism” under PDP’s watch, referencing the controversial sale of NEPA, PHCN, and the stalled Mambilla project, which he claimed crippled Nigeria’s economic base.

Okechukwu challenged the ADC to publicly release the 2009 House of Representatives report on the $16 billion power sector spending under the PDP, led by then-Chairman Ndudi Elumelu.

He also accused former PDP members of fleeing to ADC instead of helping to reform their party, saying, “Instead of fixing the PDP, they sought refuge in ADC and are now deflecting blame with stone-throwing.”

While acknowledging the dangers of excessive borrowing, Okechukwu urged President Tinubu to focus on loans for infrastructure development rather than recurrent spending. He expressed support for borrowing targeted at revamping the power sector.

“For me, borrowing should be tied to critical infrastructure like power, which is the bedrock of economic growth, not for recurrent expenditure,” he said.

He further advised the president to prioritise standard-gauge railway projects and deep-sea ports in the Niger Delta over rehabilitating narrow-gauge railways, saying such investments would better stimulate long-term growth.

  • Hope rising for PDP

    Hope rising for PDP

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, was probably right in suggesting that his party’s problems were largely self-inflicted, but his analysis of how far back that problem went remains unpersuasive. Speaking at a pre-National Executive Committee meeting last week, he said: “But we must also confront the hard truth. Much of the injury the PDP has suffered has been self-inflicted. From the Obasanjo era to this moment, we have too often jettisoned ideology in favour of personal ambition. This has cost us dearly. Yet, there is still a beauty that exists only in the PDP: our founding vision, our commitment to internal democracy, our enduring mechanisms for dialogue and reconciliation, and our true national outlook.”

Ambassador Damagum may be uncomfortable acknowledging that his party has been supplanted by the APC in all the attributes he mentioned, but he was at least forthcoming in accepting the fact the current problems had their roots way back in the Olusegun Obasanjo administration. Chief Obasanjo ignored the salient task of laying a solid and democratic foundation for the PDP, having ruled both Nigeria and his party like a despot, a culture that ossified over the years. But for the party chairman to suggest that the PDP often abandoned ideology for personal ambition appears cynical. The party never achieved nor enjoyed clarity in ideology.

The acting chairman’s boast that the party would regain its beauty, which he highlighted in his remarks, is heartening. Nigeria may take solace in the fact that the PDP is less fanatical and irrational than either Labour Party (LP) or the coalition vehicle, the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The Nigerian political system needs the contributions and opposition of the PDP. It should rediscover itself and offer the sensible, firm and measured opposition it is famed for. For the PDP, it is hope rising.

JUST IN: Two PDP lawmakers join APC in Edo

Two lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Edo State House of Assembly, have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Both lawmakers, Hon. Eugene Ojie Inegbeboh, representing Igueben constituency and Hon. Andrew Uzamere who represents Ovia North East II constituency, defected at the party’s secretariat in Benin City,

The defection of the two lawmakers have reduced the number of elected PDP members in the Edo Assembly to four.

Edo State APC Chairman, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, who received the defectors, said it was part of a growing political consciousness across Edo State.

Tenebe stated that the defections aligned with the party’s accountability, vision, and inclusive development.

He emphasised that the Edo APC remained one family, saying there was no old or new member.

According to him, “Your coming is a reinforcement of what we stand for. We are welcoming two proven leaders whose experience will further enrich our party’s vision and grassroots reach.

“Let us All take today as a reminder that the strength of the APC lies not just in our numbers, but in our unity, our discipline and our shared belief in a better Edo.

“As a party, we urged all Edo citizens to continue to give our governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the full support and enabling environment he needs to implement his people-entered programs,” Tenebe stated.

The lawmakers said their joining the party would be a boost in the forthcoming by-election.

PDP shifts convention to Ibadan in Nov.

A two-day National Convention by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, from November 15.

The decision was announced yesterday after the party’s 101st National Executive Committee(NEC) meeting by the  National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja.

The convention was originally planned to be held in Kano, in August.

In an 11-paragraph communiqué read to reporters by Ologunagba, the party said that preparations for the rescheduled convention would be finalised at the  102nd  NEC meeting on, August 25.

It added that the   National Chairman, Iliya Damagum and  National Secretary,   Samuel Anyanwu would thereafter formally notify the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) of the time, venue and agenda of the rescheduled convention in line with the requirement of Section 82 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 and Part 2(12) of the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022.

The NEC meeting also approved the membership of the National Convention Committee and the Zoning Committee, aimed at ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process. But the names of members of the two committees were not made public.

PDP governors at the well-attended  NEC meeting include  Bala Mohammed(Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke( Osun), Caleb Mutfwang(Plateau), Dauda Lawal(Zamfara), Agbu Kefas   (Taraba) and  Ahmadu  Fintiri (Adamawa).

Other leaders in attendance were some  National Working Committee(NWC) and  Board of Trustees members, as well as former Senate President Bukola Saraki.   Chief Bode George, Chief Eddy Olafeso, Labaran Maku, Senator Seriake Dickson and  Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

Ologunagba stated that the party leadership expressed satisfaction with the resolution of internal disputes, describing it as a demonstration of PDP’s commitment to dialogue and unity.

He added that the party remains united, strong and well-positioned to offer a credible alternative to the ruling  All Progressives Congress (APC).

In another resolution, the committee explained plans to initiate legal action to recover legislative seats held by members who defected to other parties.

NEC also frowned at the participation and involvement of some PDP  members in the activities, meetings and gatherings of another political party and called on them to have a rethink.

The communiqué reads:  “NEC approved the year 2025 Elective National Convention schedule of activities and timetable. Under the approved timetable, the elective national convention to elect the next set of national officers of our party will be held on Saturday, 15th to Sunday, 16th November 2025 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

“In its determination to preserve all the electoral mandate given to our party by Nigerians across the country, NEC directed the National Working Committee to take immediate legal action to recover the seats of all serving members of the National and State Assemblies elected on the platform of the PDP but defected to another party.

“By the   provision of Sections 68 (1) (g) and 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), such defectors have irredeemably lost their seats, there being no division or merger about the PDP.”

The NEC meeting further expressed concern over reports of PDP members participating in the activities of other political parties and called for renewed loyalty, discipline, and commitment to the party’s ideals.

“NEC expressed serious concern and frowns at the reported participation and involvement of some Party members in the activities, meetings and gatherings of another political party. NEC calls on these members to reconsider their actions and show loyalty and commitment as members of the PDP, especially as the law does not permit membership of two political Parties at the same time.

“NEC reassures such members of the successes recorded so far towards addressing their concerns on issues relating to our party.

“NEC restates that the PDP, as the leading opposition party and platform of choice for all Nigerians, remains open in working with other well-meaning and like-minded citizens in the collective effort to rescue our nation from the stranglehold of the rudderless and insensitive APC administration.

“NEC reassures of PDP’s belief in democracy and its commitment and readiness to be at the forefront in driving the aspiration of Nigerians to oust the APC and install a people-oriented government on the platform of the PDP come 2027.

“NEC adjourned and fixes its next (102nd) meeting to Monday, 25th August, 2025.”

Damagum, Wabara  urge restraint amid defections

Before the resolutions at the meeting were made public, Damagum, said the vaulting ambition of those who dump the party prevented them from proper reasoning.

He advised that, as the PDP seeks to reposition,  members must be cautious in expressing their opinions on party issues and the defectors.

“With those who feel they will go at this particular time, it’s sad, but when ambition beclouds reason,  then there’s a problem,” Damagum noted.

The chairman said that the fact that the meeting was well attended marked a new era for the  PDP.

He said: “A new era has come for us,  a new dawn; if you notice after the meeting yesterday, we were lamenting how the meeting was conducted because there were no contending voices.  That’s the beauty of it.

“ I want to reiterate here we are the hope of this country,  PDP is the hope of this country; we will remain the same resilient brand that was founded to fight injustice, to strengthen democracy as well as lead with all sense of honour.”

“We should be proud to be PDP members at all times; it is not like what you see in other parties;  PDP is one and united, that alone calls for celebration.

“What we need to do now  is to consolidate and go out there and preach our gospel.”

BOT Chairman Wabara, who was represented by BoT Secretary   Senator Ahmed Makarfi, advised party members must avoid comments that could appear as if they are de-marketing the party. “This is one of the critical meetings intended to set the party on a path to pull in full gear towards rebuilding and improving upon what our past leaders had done. These meetings are very critical, we thank God for the stability that has returned to the party, and we have to build on that stability,’’ he said.

A former deputy governor of Ekiti State, Professor Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Olusola-Eleka disclosed this in a letter dated July 24 and addressed to his Okeruku Ward 2 chairman in Ikere-Ekiti, Ikere local government area of the state.

In a copy of the letter made available to our correspondent on Thursday, the ex-deputy governor hinged his decision on the party’s failure to provide a platform for credible opposition and leadership in the country.

The professor of building technology, who is the PDP governorship candidate in the 2018 election, served as the Deputy Governor between 2014 and 2018 under the former Governor Ayodele Fayose-led administration.

The letter reads, “I write to formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective today.

“My sincere appreciation goes to the party leadership at all levels, as well as to the numerous members and supporters who have stood by me over the years in Ekiti State and beyond.

The PDP has offered me notable platforms for service, including the opportunity to serve as Deputy Governor of Ekiti State between 2014 and 2018, and as the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2018 governorship election.

“I remain deeply grateful for the trust and responsibilities vested in me. However, after deep consultations and reflection, I have concluded that the party has significantly derailed from the path of constructive opposition and credible leadership that once defined its identity. Consequently, I find it difficult to continue associating with the PDP in its current state.

“I wish the party success in its future endeavours”, it added.

Although Olusoka-Eleka did not disclose his next political destination, multiple sources within his political family say he may join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
