  • The PDP debacle

    The PDP debacle

    • By Sunday Olagunju

Sir: The gargantuan political vicissitudes that befell PDP and wreaked somewhat irreparable havoc on its psyche, reminds one of the timeless and immortal words of late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, first President of Nigeria, “It is not a sin to fall, but it is a sin to refuse to rise after a fall”.

Since committing what one political scientist described as a political hara-kiri, the once inimitable PDP has not only fallen from the pinnacle of political success to the abyss of political guagmire but like the Biblical Simon, it is now singing its own political nunc-dimittis.

The PDP debacle at its very onset was its failure to distinguish between the personalities of the party and party doctrinal principles and their roles and obligations to their numerous esteemed electorate that voted tem to power.

At its pinnacle, the personalities loomed large at the peril of party’s nuances, principles and objectives agreed upon at its formation. Under President Olusegun Obasanjo, the turn-over of senate presidents was unprecedented because of his hold on the party at the expense of the party constitution.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has contested the presidency more than three times as the party’s flag bearer, and his penchant to still contest the 2027 remains not just high, but almost incontrovertible.

The party’s chairmanship and the presidential candidate have remained in the North and all appeal to decentralize the position have fallen on death ears. The PDP as a political party places more premium on personalities and influential individuals at the detriment of the party constitution and supremacy.

Since the loss of 2015 election, the PDP has become boundless in principles and conscience with the governors and the National Party Executives (NEC) at each other’s jugular for the control of the lever of the party. As the main opposition political party that has all it takes to challenge the ruling APC in 2027, the PDP has descended to the lowest base of consciousness by uniting in cahoots with splinter political groups to a rather irreverent coalition that appears dead before arrival. It is like falling from grace to grass.

The wholesale defection of the entire PDP in Delta State and Akwa Ibom to APC is a sign that all may no longer be well with the PDP. Described as political tsunami, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, ex-Governor Okowa and the PDP leaders moved en masse to join APC. Described as unprecedented in the country’s political history, it is the height of loss of faith in PDP and whatever future it stands for.

Since 2015, the PDP leadership has not only lost direction they have touted leaders who imbibe the selfishness motive and greedy character, lacking the zeal and quintessential attitude to pilot a drowning party to safety.

Like Simeon’s nunc-dimittis “Now lettest thou depart”.

Police tighten security in Osun as APC, PDP officials plan council takeover

A fresh crisis is brewing in Osun State as local government executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lay conflicting claims to the control of council areas, following a recent court decision.

The Nation recalls that the Court of Appeal, on February 10, 2025, reinstated APC council executives previously sacked by two Federal High Court rulings.

However, the appellate court also dismissed a subsequent application by the APC to relist an earlier appeal struck out on January 13 for lack of diligent prosecution.

In the wake of this development, PDP chairmen elected on February 22, 2025, backed by the Osun State Government, announced their intention to resume control of the councils.

They argued that the dismissal of the APC’s fresh appeal effectively upheld the sack of the previously reinstated APC executives.

Reacting, the Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) for the APC, Abiodun Idowu, insisted that APC officials remain the lawful occupants of the council offices.

“The keys to the councils are with us,” he said. “We have an enrolment order confirming our legitimacy. Let the PDP’s illegal officials show the police their own enrolment order.”

“There is no fear, we are in control of the local government which is why our enrollment order made IGP deploy its men to us. No fear, Osun residents should go about their normal business.”

However, the ALGON chairman for PDP, Sarafadeen Awotunde speaking with The Nation said “We are not interested in disrupting the peace and good governance we are enjoying in Osun State under Governor Ademola Adeleke. Resumption does not matter to us for now but the developmental projects that we are enjoying in Osun State.

“The Court of Appeal that gave the judgment on Friday knows the next step to take to chase out those hooligans, the government is continuing. We respect the rule of law, this issue is not between Osun APC and PDP but APC against the people of Osun State.

Speaking with the Osun State Police Command through its spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, he confirmed that they have deployed their men at the councils to forestall breakdown of peace.

“Our own is to provide security, to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order, which we have put in place, we are not into politics, we are just to ensure safety. Our deployment has been done and I urge the people of Osun State to go about their business.”

It could be recalled that the Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji raised alarm that the Osun State Government is planning to use Amotekun corps to eject reinstatement executives from the councils.

Tinubu to PDP, others: put your house in order before 2027

President Bola Tinubu has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties to resolve their internal issues ahead of the 2027 general elections, dismissing claims that his administration is working to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

Speaking on Friday during the commissioning of the newly constructed Left-Hand Service Carriageway of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) Stage II, from Ring Road 1 Junction to Wasa Junction, also known as the Apo-Wasa Road, Tinubu reiterated his commitment to a multiparty democracy.

Represented at the event by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu stated that while he remains a party loyalist, he will not interfere in resolving the internal crises plaguing opposition parties.

“Let them put their house in order,” he said, adding that the responsibility to remain viable political contenders rests squarely with the opposition themselves.

Saraki panel meets Makinde on PDP crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reconciliation train rolled into Ibadan, Oyo State capital, yesterday, in continuation of the consultation on how to resolve the protracted  crisis.

The chairman of the panel, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, held a meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde at the Government House, Agodi.

It was the second time the strategy committee met with the governor since Saraki, former governor of Kwara State, took up the assignment.

The main opposition party was thrown into confusion on Tuesday, following the resolution of some stakeholders that its 2027 presidential candidate should come from the South in the spirit of zoning.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, who hosted the stakeholders, including members of ‘G5 governors’, formed ahead of the 2023 presidential election, emphasizing that peace can only reign in the party, if its constitutional provision on rotation is upheld.

The minister, who was PDP governor of Rivers between 2015 and 2023, also faulted how the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was shoved aside by the PDP governors.

Yesterday, the Bayelsa State chapter of the PDP hailed Wike and the G5 over the Abuja parley, noting that the resolutions are critical to the survival of the party.

Also, the chapter applauded Anyanwu’s affirmation as National Secretary by the stakeholders and their insistence on presidential zoning to the South.

    Saraki on trouble shooting

Although details of the Ibadan meeting are unknown, sources said Saraki visited Makinde to seek his opinion on how to resolve the leadership crisis and prepare for the proposed convention

According to the source, “the party will hold its convention in Kano in August and the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by end of this month. There is need to bring all the warring factions together under one umbrella.

“As we all know, Makinde is a major factor to be reckoned with in the party. Hence, the need to always carry him along. Even though we were not privy to their discussion since it was held privately, it might not be unconnected with the resolve of the Committee to end the crisis in the party.

Saraki, who confirmed the Ibadan meeting, wrote on his Facebook page: “Thank you, Your Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, for making time to meet with us today-even though it coincided with your wife’s birthday.

“Warm wishes to Her Excellency Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde.

“Following today’s meeting, we remain cautiously optimistic as we forge ahead to secure a common position among the leadership of our great party”

    Bayelsa PDP hails Wike, G5

Bayelsa PDP, led by Acting Chairman George Turnah, described the meeting hosted by Wike as a decisive step towards uniting the party.

The Publicity Secretary, Derri Alasuote Wright, said in a statement that the parley underscored Wike’s unwavering love for the PDP and his relentless fight for justice.

The party saluted Wike’s  dedication to  party’s principles, adding that he had championed the cause of unity and integrity within the fold.

The  statement reads: “ We fully endorse the resolutions reached at the meeting, and as a state chapter, we stand by our recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the PDP, and to state that there is no vacancy requiring any replacement whatsoever.

“Our party’s constitution and the recent Supreme Court decision regarding the National Secretary issue are very clear and unambiguous in this regard.

“As a state chapter, we stand united with the rest of our eminent leaders and concerned stakeholders across the federation in the decision to zone the Presidential ticket of our party for the upcoming 2027 elections to the Southern region.

“This strategic move does not just demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity and fairness. It also does ensure that our party remains attuned to the voices of all Nigerians.

“Bayelsa State PDP reaffirms its loyalty to the resolutions of this meeting and remains steadfast in its support for Nyesom Wike as our national leader, as well as our endorsement of Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary.

“Together, we will forge ahead with renewed vigour to restore the PDP to its rightful place as a beacon of hope and justice for our people and nation.”

    ‘Abuja meeting unknown to PDP’

The Director-General of the PDP Campaign Council for the November, 2024 Ondo State Governorship Election, Eddy Olafeso, said those at the Abuja meeting attended individually and not as party members.

He called for peace in the party, saying that it is in the interest of members.

Olafeso, former Information Commissioner in Ondo State, said: “That was not a PDP stakeholders’ meeting; they will be correct to say that they are concerned individuals.”

PDP, Edo govt bicker over good governance

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has condemned the state government’s threat against Mr Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor over a Facebook post, urging it to focus on good governance instead.

A statement by state PDP Caretaker Committee, Dr Anthony Aziegbemi, yesterday in Benin City, urged public office holders to accept criticisms.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Samson Osagie had warned Ifaluyi-Isibor over a social media post.

NAN reports that the Facebook post was deemed defamatory against Governor  Monday Okpebholo and the commissioners.

The commissioner  in a statement accused Ifaluyi-Isibor of criminal defamation and threatened legal action unless a public apology was issued within twenty-four hours.

He demanded a retraction on all social media platforms and a publication in at least one national newspaper.

Aziegbemi noted that the statement by Osagie was an attempt to stifle dissent, suppress opposition, and intimidate citizens who criticised the Okpebholo-led administration.

“Osagie cannot lawfully silence Edo citizens or curtail their right to comment on government performance and leadership.

“Ifaluyi-Isibor simply stated the truth. His critique reflects the PDP’s position and exposes the failures of the administration.

“Edo State is visibly dysfunctional. The governor’s frequent absence has caused widespread regression across key sectors like education, healthcare, economy, and security.

  • Fayose rules out defection, says PDP in crisis

Fayose rules out defection, says PDP in crisis

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in deep crisis and risks collapse if urgent steps are not taken to salvage it.

Despite the wave of defections from the opposition party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Fayose ruled out any intention to leave the PDP.

He spoke with reporters after he met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The former governor said his visit was personal and aimed at encouraging the President in his efforts to stabilise the country.

“Let me first of all clear this. I, Fayose, will not move from PDP to any political party, not even APC. I am 65 years old this year. It is within the choices of those who have chosen to move.

“Some said they saw what the President is doing. Some said they believe that the party is in trouble. And without doubt, the PDP is in trouble. That is the gospel truth,” he said.

He warned that the party could disintegrate if internal issues are not swiftly addressed.

“I believe that if they don’t quickly, quickly take steps, the party in itself will become a carcass. That is the truth,” he warned.

Fayose, who has been an outspoken figure in the PDP, said he was no longer playing a frontline role in the party’s leadership and has already made his contributions during his time in office.

“I am not on the front line anymore. I am no longer the governor of a state. The little contribution I can make, I made it while I was on the seat,” he said.

On his visit to the President, Fayose said it was motivated by the need to encourage the President to continue in his efforts to reposition Nigeria.

He acknowledged the difficulties in governance but said President Tinubu’s initial steps deserve commendation.

“No one is saying it is easy, but there is no miracle that can turn things around overnight. For the little the President has done, we must commend him,” he said.

The former governor added that though he had criticised the previous administration, the current situation cannot be compared to the past.

“Well, even while I was in office as a PDP governor, I’ve always believed in his leadership. And I did not hide my support for him even before he became the President.

“The only thing we can do as leaders of this country today is to continue to encourage him, to lift up his hands,” Fayose remarked.

He noted that stabilising the economy and the currency is critical and commended the President’s courageous decisions so far, stating that such efforts give hope for a better future.

  • How PDP can survive, by Wike

How PDP can survive, by Wike

    • Minister hosts party stakeholders

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike yesterday hinged the survival of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on strict adherence to its constitution and 1999 Constitution.

He said if the party had listened to the advice of the ‘Group of Five Governors (G5), it would not have been boxed into its current situation.

Wike, former governor of Rivers State, recalled the agitation of the five governors for presidential zoning or rotation, noting that it has stabilised the polity.

He cautioned against double standards, wondering why only the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was prevented from returning to his position after losing the Imo State governorship poll.

Wike pointed out that other party officers who lost elections were allowed to return to their positions, stressing that it smacked of partiality.

The minister hailed the resolution of the stakeholders to work for the survival of the party.

Wike reflected on the challenges confronting the main opposition party when he hosted some stakeholders in his official residence in Abuja.

At the meeting were former Governors Ifeanyi Uguanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); Senator Anyanwu; former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda; serving and former federal and state lawmakers, and zonal and state party executives.

He described those who visited him as  stakeholders who believe in the survival of the party.

Wike said: “All of you here are those who are committed to the survival of our party, not just on TV talking or in the newspapers talking, but you are committed to the party at the various levels.

“Today, this country is stabilized because of the activities of the G5 Governors. You may like us, you may hate us. The truth of the matter is that if G5 did not take the decision we took, this country would have been in crisis.

“It doesn’t matter who the beneficiary was, but the right thing had to be done and we still stand by that decision.

“If the party had listened to what we said, we won’t have been where we are today and we have continued to sound it to the party, let the constitution of the party and of the country be respected.

“That, as an opposition party, we cannot continue to act with impunity. No opposition party acts with impunity. Ours is to continue to placate people and bring them together, not to say that they should go to hell. Let us not allow greed, let us not allow ego to kill out party”.

The FCT minister who condemned the fixation on national secretary, said Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, who was the chairman of the party in the state, did not resign before contesting for governor.

Wike said Kefas only went back to resign after winning the election.

He said that the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who contested for the Kebbi State governor, retained his seat even after losing the election.

Ortom noted that he who pays the piper dictates the tune, challenging anyone to tell Nigerians who has contributed to the growth of the PDP more than Wike.

The former governor said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Wike as FCT minister because he does not believe in a one-party state.

Ortom said: “For whatever reason, PDP made a lot of mistakes and we are where we are today.

  • 2027: PDP to pick presidential candidate from South, says minister

2027: PDP to pick presidential candidate from South, says minister

Some concerned leaders in the People Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday resolved that the party must zone its presidential ticket to the South in 2027.

The resolution was read in a communique after the meeting yesterday in Abuja by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The meeting was hosted by the minister.

Reading the communiqué, Wike said the elders resolved that to finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction, the PDP must, without further delay, respect the judgment of the Supreme Court.

Wike said the stakeholders have unequivocally reaffirmed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party.

They also threw their weight behind the reconciliation committee headed by former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

The communique reads: “At a meeting of the aforementioned group on the 9th day of June, 2025 in Abuja, the state of affairs of the party; the need to reinforce internal democracy, equity and justice within the ranks of the party were discussed and carefully reviewed.

“The eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders drawn from the various states of the federation, took a deep and strong view of the situation in our party and came to the following conclusions:

    •The seemingly intractable crisis in the party is as a result of inexplicable refusal of a few to adhere to the party Constitution, with particular reference to Section 36(1)(a) (b) and (c), Sections 47(3)(5) and 48(1)(i) and the definitive Supreme Court Judgment regarding the position of the office of the National Secretary of the party;

•The eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders are alarmed that the party is in an inevitable path to self- annihilation, if urgent steps are not taken to rein in the desperate, divisive and selfish tendencies that brought the party to its knees in the lead up to the 2023 election.

•These divisive tendencies, unfortunately, have found expression in the conduct of certain interest within the ranks of our party both at NEC, NWC and Board of trustees level.”

    The stakeholders also resolved:

•That to finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction in our party, the party must, without further delay, respect the judgment of the Supreme Court. We, therefore, unequivocally reaffirm Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party.

•In the spirit of fairness, inclusion, federal Character principles and respect for our party Constitution, the Party must make an unequivocal pronouncement Zoning its presidential candidate to the south in the 2027 elections after the unbroken years of Northern President under President Muhammadu Buhari.

•In line with the provisions of our party constitution only the National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, can issue notices of meeting of the National Convention, National Executive Committee, National Caucus and the National Working Committee and to this end all notices not issued by him and actions founded on them, including correspondences to INEC are null and void and of no effect whatsoever.

•Furthermore, it is clear from the Constitution that only the National Convention, properly and duly constituted can remove Senator Sam Anyanwu, the National Secretary, arising from his status as a member of the National Executive Committee of the party.

•We, therefore, demand that the acting National Chairman and the National Secretary jointly issue a notice to INEC with an attached agenda for the NEC meeting of the party being the only pathway to abide by extant laws.

•We, the stakeholders reiterate our commitment to our great party and urge all members to uphold the rule of law, respect constitutional mandate, resist all machinations aimed at destabilizing the party and support the efforts of the National Reconciliation Committee headed by His Excellency, Senator Bukola Saraki.”

At the meeting were former Governors Ifeanyi Uguanyi (Enugu); Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia); National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu; former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda; serving and former federal and state lawmakers, among others.

2027: 1,000 PDP youth groups declare support for Tinubu, hail Wike as party’s greatest asset

A coalition of over 1,000 youth support networks under the platform of the PDP Youth Vanguard for Renewed Hope has declared total support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

The coalition made the declaration in a statement signed by its national president, Hon. Charles Onoja, on Sunday.

The youth coalition also described the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as the “greatest political asset” produced by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in recent times.

The group praised Wike for showing unmatched courage and clarity in declaring that he would lead Tinubu’s presidential campaign in Rivers State come 2027.

Onoja said Wike’s decision to back Tinubu, despite remaining a card-carrying member of the PDP, shows that Nigeria’s unity and future development now matter more than party affiliations.

The coalition noted that the country is experiencing a political rebirth where competence and patriotism should take precedence over partisanship.

“We align completely with His Excellency, Nyesom Wike. He is a lion of Nigerian politics and the greatest asset the PDP has ever produced in the interest of national unity,” the statement reads.

“That he boldly declared to the nation, on live television, that he would lead Tinubu’s 2027 campaign in Rivers is not just political news but a strategic move. He has chosen the path of truth and prosperity will be kind to him.”

Wike had, during a media chat broadcast live on Channels TV earlier this week, responded to questions about his political future by confirming he would spearhead Tinubu’s 2027 campaign in Rivers State.

The coalition said it was encouraged by the minister’s courage and sincerity, adding that many young PDP members across the the country have resolved to campaign vigorously for Tinubu’s second term.

The statement noted that while Wike may be misunderstood by some within his party, millions of young Nigerians see in him a leader who is pragmatic and patriotic.

“This is not about crossing over to the APC. It is about crossing over to the truth. The reality is that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outperformed expectations in infrastructure, education particularly the student loan scheme and job creation, aviation sector reforms and more. Young Nigerians, particularly in the North, are tired of PDP’s propaganda. We want sound leadership, and that is what President Tinubu has provided in the past two years,” Onoja added.

Onoja disclosed that the coalition has begun grassroots mobilisation across the six geopolitical zones to ensure massive support for Tinubu in the next election.

“Our structures are active in the 774 local government areas. We are organising town halls, campus engagements, digital campaigns, community meetings, church and mosque-to-mosque sensitisation efforts. We want to make a clear statement that Nigeria’s youth are not blind to results. We support Tinubu because he delivers,” he declared.

The group also used the opportunity to urge PDP stakeholders to refrain from attacking Wike, warning that doing so may alienate more young people from the party.

“Rather than vilify Wike, the PDP should listen to him. He has his finger on the pulse of the people, especially young Nigerians. His decision to back Tinubu is in line with the aspiration of millions who want Nigeria to rise above the same old politics,” the statement added.

“We want to be on the side of truth, performance, and stability. Wike has shown us that it is possible to stay loyal to your values and still support a government that works. Tinubu has earned our respect. Come 2027, we will speak with our PVCs.”

Onoja announced that details of its mobilisation plan titled “10 Million Youth Votes for Renewed Hope” would soon be presented to President Tinubu and Wike at a youth engagement summit in Abuja.
