PDP, APC clash over one-party claim

The one-party rule issue came to the fore again yesterday, leading to a clash between the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a communiqué issued after its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the PDP accused the APC of plotting a ‘one-party totalitarian rule’.

The party spoke against the backdrop of the mass defection from its fold into the APC.

Governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, and other elected officials have deserted the opposition party, which is itself in turmoil.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who spoke at the APC’s summit on Thursday, dismissed the one-party fear.

That did not stop the PDP from reaffirming the claim.

Yesterday, the APC responded, saying the PDP was hallucinating.

Party spokesman Felix Morka said opposition parties are living with the fear of the harmless.

Morka said: “The communique of the PDP NEC is nothing but a piece of tranquillising lullaby meant to calm the frailed nerves of members of a pathetic and self-defeating party.

“Rather than concentrate its scant energies in search of solutions to its internecine strife, PDP’s NEC chose, instead, to delude itself by blaming the APC for its woes, including its thinning membership.”

Morka, who said the ruling party would not want to join words with the opposition, assured Nigerians that President Tinubu remains focused on building a prosperous Nigeria.

In the 10-point communiqué, the PDP heaped the blame for the ‘economic woes of the country’ on the Federal Government.

It called on the government to rescind its policies, which it claimed had made Nigerians poorer.

It added that the government had failed to prevent insecurity and kidnapping.

The NEC, presided over by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, ratified the composition of the Zoning Committee, led by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, and the National Convention Panel chaired by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

Other members of the Zoning Committee are Governor Dauda Lawal (Zamfara, Vice Chairman) and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau, Secretary).

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke is Vice Chairman of the Convention Committee, and his Enugu counterpart, Peter Mbah, is Secretary.

Damagum said: “NEC resolved to consider the resolution of the Southeast Zonal Executive at the next NEC meeting scheduled to be held on June 30 in respect of the position of national secretary.”

The Southeast caucus is pushing for Sunday Ude-Okoye in place of Samuel Anyanwu.

The NEC also fixed the convention for August 28 to 30.

The meeting was held at the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, temporarily shut on Monday by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) over non-payment of ground rent for many years.

But the property and others in the same situation got a reprieve of two weeks granted by the President to fulfil their obligation.

Also at the meeting were Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), who is PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman; Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and BoT members – former Senate President Adolphus Wabara,  Chief Olabode George, Chief Tom Ikimi, and Senator Ben Obi.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umoh Eno were absent.

    ‘Those who left will return’

Mohammed said the governors had resolved to stand by the platform and halt the gale of defections.

The Bauchi Governor said: “Our members are standing strong and resolute. There is no intimidation that we are not going through. There is no caressing or cajoling that members and elected governors are not going through if you ask anyone of them. But certainly, we are resolute. We will not abandon the mandate.

“That is why you can see us here together. Yes, we wish well for those who have left. But we believe this is not the first time people left PDP and came back. I’m sure they will come back.

“The governors are united. We are ready to work. No amount of intimidation or exclusion by the Federal  Government will make us give in. And we are ready to tolerate and swallow all the melancholy, all the abuses that we will get.”

Lauding the NEC members for their patience, he added: “This 99th NEC is to us a triumph of democracy, a triumph of good governance about the evil that we are experiencing in this country.”

Wabara described the PDP as the most credible platform for national transformation, adding that its future is bright.

He said: “We must be honest with ourselves. There is still much work to do. Divisions, mistrusts, and lingering grievances within our ranks have at times hampered our progress and blurred our vision.

“As the party of the people, we must recommit to healing these wounds and restoring faith among our members.

“As chairman of the Board of Trustees, the conscience of the party, I call on all of us leaders, elders, youths, and stakeholders to embrace reconciliation, not just as a political tactic, but as a moral imperative. We must open our hearts to forgive, to dialogue, and to debate.”

Party leadership, not Wike, to blame, says Suswam

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam berated the PDP leadership for the protracted crisis.

Suswam, who spoke on television, faulted leadership for holding secret meetings with Wike without the knowledge of major stakeholders.

He said: “The lack of leadership in the PDP is at the root of the crisis within the party.

“According to the FCT Minister, there was a meeting in Lagos.  He was invited and had an agreement in Lagos. There was another meeting in Abuja in the house of a former Senate President, where those agreements were consolidated.

“If you are sincere with the people, when we were called by former and current governors for a meeting about two weeks ago, none of these issues were before us.

“Nobody knew that there was a secret meeting where the agreement was reached with the FCT minister.

“If you engage someone in an agreement, it is only honourable to keep that agreement. If you are not interested, why give false hope in the first place?”

Suswam added: “I don’t blame Wike. It is a lack of capacity of the leadership of the PDP, and the leadership has not been straight with party followers.

“We are stakeholders. If we are called to a meeting by the current governors, under the leadership of Bala Mohammed, and we are not aware of secret meetings held earlier with Wike and the agreements, it means that we were hoodwinked, and I think that is not right.

“There was no need to make an agreement with Wike at the expense of other people.”

    George chides Wike

George condemned the sealing of the party’s national secretariat by the FCT administration, describing the action as a betrayal by Wike.

He expressed disappointment that Wike, a long-time beneficiary of the PDP, would allow such an act to take place under his watch.

George, who spoke on television,  said: “I was shell-shocked. He is my political son. He rose through the ranks on the platform of this party—from local government chairman to governor, minister (state education), and now FCT minister.

“You don’t go to your village, become the local government chairman, and the first thing you do is lock up your father’s house because he owes the village dues. That is betrayal.”

He added: “They waited until the very day we had to hold our NEC meeting to seal our office. He should have just paid it and brought the receipt to us. That is what a true and loyal son of the house would do.”

According to the FCTA, the owner of the PDP secretariat building, Senator Samaila Mamman Kofi, owes ground rent for over 28 years.

Why I won’t attend NEC, by Lamido

Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido insisted that he would not participate in PDP activities unless Wike and former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom were expelled.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who was absent at the NEC meeting, also frowned at the claim by Anyanwu, the embattled National Secretary, whom he said had been rejected by the Zonal Executive Committee.

Though Wike and Anyanwu were not at the NEC meeting, the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Samuel Ortom, was in attendance at yesterday’s meeting.

Decked in his Tiv traditional cap and a white kaftan, the immediate past Benue State governor came into Legacy House in the company of the PDP Governors Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor.

Lamido, who is also a member of the PDP BoT, told reporters in Abuja that the Minister and the former governor should be expelled for anti-party activities and for working against its interest in the 2023 general elections.

The former Jigawa governor berated the FCT minister for his apathy to peace.

He said: “Here is someone who was honoured by the PDP, brought into relevance by the PDP, and now turns around to fight the very party that made him. Wike is, quite frankly, a disaster. “What he has done is un-African and un-Nigerian.

“I don’t understand how someone, simply because of his own ambition, can take things so personally and act so destructively. There used to be a party culture that prioritised collective good, something altruistic, but that seems lost now.

“To seal the PDP secretariat — a party that produced you, nurtured you — no matter your grievances, no matter your bitterness, it’s like destroying your own home. He claims he financed the party.

“But is it wrong for a son to take care of his own mother? Does it now mean the mother must submit to the son and take orders from him simply because he’s providing her clothing?

“Wike is thinking in a very warped way. He lacks the values and traditions that define our political culture. I’m glad, however, that President Tinubu intervened.

“The office was reopened by his order. The very man Wike is trying to please by destroying his own political family is the one saying, ‘No, you can’t do that.’”

Lamidu also faulted Ortom, whom he accused of publicly endorsing the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, at the expense of the PDP candidate.

He said: “Look at the BOT. People like Ortom, who declared support for Peter Obi in 2023, are still members. That’s why I’ve said I will not attend any PDP meeting unless Wike is expelled and people like Ortom are removed from the BOT.

“I remain a PDP member, but I will not participate in party functions or answer calls to meetings while these individuals remain in leadership.

“How can I sit with someone like Ortom in the BOT to discuss the future of PDP? Or someone who is rejected in his own zone and is now being imposed by another zone? These are impostors.”

Lamenting the lack of discipline in PDP, Lamido said: “During our time, the party was supreme. It held full authority, and everyone respected it, whether in the North, South, East, or West. Anyone, no matter how influential, who crossed the party line would be sanctioned.

“Today, people openly working against the PDP are still being tolerated. “Someone like Wike, who claims to love the PDP but is clearly undermining it, should be expelled by the NWC. Why hasn’t that happened?”

PDP NEC fails to resolve issues, Fixes another meeting for June 30

The crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may not be over very soon as its National Executive Committee  (NEC), the highest decision-making organ, failed to resolve major issues affecting the party at its 99th meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

The irreconcilable differences however forced the organ to fix another meeting for June 30.

Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliyasu Umar Damagum dropped the hint of possible conduct of more NEC meetings before the party’s National Convention while declaring open the meeting at the Legacy House, Abuja.

The meeting had been subjected to conflicting directives from the embattled National Secretary,  Sen. Samuel Anyanwu and the Deputy National Secretary,  Hon. Setonji Koshoedo, acting as National Secretary over the procedure outlined in the PDP Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act thay should be followed.

The meeting had all the party’s NWC members, Governors of Bauchi, Enugu, Adamawa, Taraba, Oyo, Osun, Zamfara and Bayelsa States in attendance with members of the Board of Trustees, State Chairmen of the party and members of the National Assembly from the party.

The party’s 2023 presidential flag bearer Atiku Abubakar, Minister of Federal Capital Territory. Nyesom Wike and Akwa Ibom Governor,  Umo Eno were however absent at the meeting

The uncertainty clouded the meeting, having been postponed five times was compounded on Monday when the pre-NEC meeting of the National Caucus of the party adjourned its sitting to Tuesday, the earlier day fixed for the NEC meeting,  only for the leadership to direct that the NEC will still hold as planned.

Presenting the communique after the meeting which lasted for about two hours the acting Chairman said NEC received and ratified the composition of the Committee on the National Convention and approved the conduct of the National Convention on Thursday 28th to Saturday 30th August 2025.

He also said that the NEC  received and ratified the composition of two major committees ahead of the National Convention. There are Committee on the Zoning of National Offices and the National Convention Committee.

According to Damagum, the Zoning Committee has Gov. Douye Diri (Bayelsa) as Chairman, Gov. Dauda Lawal (Zamfara),Vice Chairman and Plateau Governor, Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary.

For the National Convention Committee,  Adamawa Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri will head the committee while Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun State  will serve as Vice Chairman and Gov. Peter Mbah  (Enugu State) as Secretary.

On the contentious National Secretary issue, NEC received the resolution of the South East Zonal Executive and  resolved to consider the resolution of the South East Zonal Executive at the next NEC meeting billed for Monday, June 30.

Assuring Nigerians of the resolve of the party to provide leadership, the Acting Chairman said: “PDP remains strong, resilient , united and determined now, more than ever before in leading the charge to rescue our Nation from the vicious grip of the APC.”

Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum  Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) said they have resolved to stand by the PDP, assuring leaders and members that they are not ready to jump the ship.

Apparently referring to gale of defections hitting the party, Mohammed said: “Our members (Governors) are standing strong and resolute. There is no intimidation that we are not going through. There is no caressing or cajoling that members and elected governors are not going through. If you ask anyone of them. But certainly, we are resolute. We will not abandon the mandate.

PDP crisis: Party leadership, not Wike, to blame, says Suswam

Former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has berated the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the protracted crisis rocking the party.

Suswam, who spoke on a national television today, faulted leadership of the party for holding secret meetings with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, without the knowledge of major stakeholders.

He said that the FCT minister can’t be blamed for the withdrawing on the said agreement.

Wike, had in a statement released on Sunday, announced his withdrawal from the reconciliation efforts, blaming Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for the crisis within the PDP.

In his reaction, Suswam, stated that the PDP’s lack of leadership is at the root of its crisis.

The former Governor stated that PDP stakeholders were hoodwinked by the leadership’s decision to make a secret agreement with Wike.

Suswam said he does not blame Wike for pulling out of their agreement because if someone engages another person in an agreement, it is only honourable to keep that agreement.

He said, “I talk about leadership, even if we do not have good leadership in a family, that family is doomed.

“The lack of leadership in the PDP is at the root of the crisis within the party.

    Uncertainty over PDP NEC meeting

    • Caucus meeting adjourned till this morning
    • Damagum condemns secretariat seal-off

A cloud of uncertainty envelops the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting billed for Abuja today.

The pre-NEC Caucus meeting summoned by some governors elected on the platform was inconclusive yesterday.

The meeting was adjourned abruptly, following the sealing of the party’s national secretariat by the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) due to the failure to pay ground rent for 28 years.

An emergency meeting of PDP leaders was consequently summoned by the PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed at the Bauchi State Lodge in Asokoro to discuss the face off between the party and the FCTA.

Also, the Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting slated for 3 pm at the party secretariat was shifted to Legacy House.

There is division over the NEC meeting summoned by Deputy National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo, acting as National Secretary.

The National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, issued a directive on Sunday postponing the meeting on the ground that the procedure outlined in the PDP Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act was not followed.

The decision by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to withdraw from the party’s reconciliation process generated tension.

The former Rivers State Governor explained that he pulled out because of the governor’s disrespect for the Supreme Court judgment that Anyanwu should continue as national secretary till the next national convention.

At around 3.30pm, eight governors joined former Senate President Bukola Saraki, chairman of the Strategy Committee, for a short meeting.

Barely one hour later, Saraki and the governors joined other members of the National Caucus for the meeting

Alighting from the meeting, the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, said it was adjourned till today.

He said a committee was set up to look into undisclosed issues and report back the next day for the meeting to resume.

Damagum said: “We just adjourn our meeting of today till tomorrow (today) by 10 o’clock. This meeting is going to continue by then.

“We have set up a small committee  that will give us a report tomorrow  morning, and we will continue from there. I will address you (media) properly by the time we conclude our meeting tomorrow.”

Asked if the NEC meeting would still hold, Damagum said:  “The meeting will continue here tomorrow by 10 o’clock,” and walked away.

Damagum condemned the FCTA for ceiling the party’s office.

He said: “This is the height of irresponsibility from this government. If they are encouraging it, we are not going to take it lightly. In fact, they can come and arrest all of us. We are ready for that. We condemn this in its totality. It is the highest sense of irresponsibility. We will not tolerate it. They are trying to mar democracy. This is unacceptable. We condemn it, and we will make sure they have us to contend with.”

At the meeting were Governors Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Abu Kefas (Taraba),  Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa)

Akwa Ibom governor, who has served a notice of defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Bayelsa governor were absent.

BoT members at the meeting included the Chairman,  Senate Adolphus Wabara; Prof. Jerry Gana, Dr.Babangida Aliyu,  former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro.

  • Delta PDP after gale of defections

Delta PDP after gale of defections

Despite the defection of key Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains in Delta State to the All Progressives Congress (APC), OKUNGBOWA AIWERIE, examines how the opposition party is trying to retain its strength

Following the “political tsunami” that raged through the Delta PDP in which Governor Sherrif Oborevwori led his aides, two former governors, five hundred councillors and other political appointees to defect to All Progressive Congress (APC), not many rated the party’s survival chances highly.

But against all odds, Delta PDP appears to be alive and kicking.

Party faithful have been holding meetings the both ward and local government levels in a move to reposition the party.

It was learnt that many PDP leaders, uncertain about their future are beginning to question the wisdom of Oborevwori’s defection.

A member of PDP in Ethiope West, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Nobody is benefitting from this defection except Okowa and Sheriff. Who are they fooling? They cannot just tell us “follow” and then we follow like fools” What is our benefit for defecting to APC”?

Another PDP member who resigned his appointment as  aide to Oborevwori in the wake of his defection, Victor Ojei, said many PDP members are uncomfortable with the decision of Governor Oborevwori’s defection and have sworn to teach him a political lesson at the next election.

He admitted that while finance remained a major challenge, members are determined to regroup and challenge the ruling APC in the next elections.

He added that individual members have been funding the meetings across the state.

While referencing an interim injunction obtained by a faction of the PDP led by Dan Orbih at a Federal High Court in Abuja in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/505/2025, under Hon. Justice I.E. Ekwo, on the 4th day of April 2025, Mr. Ojei boasted of the emergence of a factional wing of the party in Delta state.

He said: “In the next 30 days maximum, there is a strong likelihood that a factional wing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will emerge in Delta State. This looming division stems from growing allegations that the current caretaker leader is a known road project contractor closely aligned with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. These accusations raise serious concerns that he may have been strategically placed to advance their political selfish interests within the Delta PDP, rather than serve the broader party structure.

“This development echoes the deepening crisis in Edo State, where on Tuesday, the factional Zonal Leader, Dan Orbih, announced a parallel caretaker committee to steer the party’s affairs. A similar caretaker committee was also constituted for Bayelsa State, further signaling rising tensions and factionalism within the South-South PDP.

“Can Delta PDP take urgent steps to avert a similar escalation, we doubt because what is good for the geese is also good for the gander.”

Delta Unity Group (DUG), a PDP pressure group formed in the run up to the 2023 election  has described the defections of prominent members “as good riddance to bad rubbish”, saying that the party is much stronger.

The Chairman Board of Trustees and ex- Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare, assured that the PDP was intact and thriving, the defections, notwithstanding.

He admitted that the defection by Oborevwori jolted the party but maintained that the governor’s departure has galvanised the people to pick up the pieces of the party and move on.

His words: “The defections is not a tsunami as such.Though I accept that the governor in any political party is a major figure that must be reckoned with. So, his departure will jolt that party, but in the case of PDP his departure has galvanised the people to pick the pieces of their party and moved on. If you observe what is happening from unit-to-unit, ward-to-ward, local government -to-local government, there is a massive movement within the party. PDP were never scattered. The big fishes left. When you say a commissioner left, they don’t have a choice but to move with the governor. But what is in their minds is different.”

Emmanuel Ogidi, Chairman, PDP Zonal Caretaker Committee (South south) said PDP built Delta State from scratch.

He described the situation (mass defection) as a flood emergency situation that takes away both the good and bad. He added that when the flood subsides, the good ones returns and the bad ones are washed away.

He expressed happiness that many PDP members are coming back to the party and have backed his efforts at reorganization.

According to him, the party built Delta state and have a strong advantage over any party in an electoral contest.

Ogidi, a former Delta PDP chairman, maintained that despite the efforts of “spoilers” within the party who are poised to distract committed party faithful, but stressed that the party will overcome their nefarious activities.

His words,” I was sent to Delta state to take stock of what was left. I am happy to report that I am encouraged because a lot of people are coming back. It was like a flood emergency that carries away both the good and bad. But once the flood ebbs, the ones return and the bad ones hopefully are washed away.”

On the issue of finance impacting efforts at regrouping, Ogidi said: “Finance is a challenge everywhere but because we are determined, it is not a problem for us. You can see that meetings are being held across the state. Individuals are putting their resources together to ensure the smooth running of the party. When people see you are serious, they will support us.”

On rumours of the emergence of a parallel PDP structure in the state, Ogidi described those behind the move as “enemies of distraction “, but vowed to resist the effort.

He said, “ Yes, there are people who are enemies of distraction. They will be there but with time they will be weeded out. We are good and resolute. PDP shall overcome this crisis.”

A former PDP governorship candidate and ex-Delta Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Peter Mrakpor (SAN) said he was not defecting to the APC, stressing that all PDP members joined the party at different times and are not bound to leave the party at the same time.

He said, “ I stand with PDP. I am not leaving the party.Everyone came to this world differently. We did not join PDP at the same time, so we must not leave at the same time.It is what you believe, you must follow your conscience. This is not a slave where you are forced against your will.”

Despite the mass defection of Governor Oborevwori and others not many PDP members have registered with the APC in their respective wards as expected.

APC chairman Ward 4, Warri South LGA, Mr. Daniel Oyibo said the party has recorded zero enrollments.

He said the leadership of APC Ward 4, Warri South, had  created registration centres in Ugbuwangue and Ugbori.

According to him, the registration centres which opens 9am-4pm daily from Mondays through Saturdays are alternated between the Town Hall in Ugbuwangue and Ogiame Primary School.

He said: “Registration is ongoing, today is at Ugbuwangue, tomorrow registration will be done at Ugbori. The registration started as soon as the governor defected. Since the defection, none of the decampees have come for registration. The registration is free.”

PDP faithful have been holding strategic meetings across the state, with PDP members in Orogun Ward 1, Ughelli North LGA, reiterating their commitment to the party.

They assured that they will work to ensure PDP grows from strength to strength in the ward.

Addressing members during one of such the meetings Dr. Simon A. Ohwo said: “I called this meeting today for us to re-affirm our commitment in our great party PDP, adding that Orogun ward 1 still remain PDP, we are not going any where.

He added: “I am very exited seeing you people here today, irrespective of your tight schedule, you have all gathered here for the sake of PDP to move forward, let me assure you, PDP remains and it will not die just as they think, but as far as l am concern the party will continue to grow and it will be stronger.”

He said, “When we heard that Governor Sheriff wanted  to decamp to APC, l personally did not believe, but at the end, he made his own choice, his choice cannot be ours; we remain in our party. It is PDP that produced Governor Sheriff today, so if, he decides to leave, congratulations to him, but l can assure you, PDP remains the best political party where dividends of democracy could be guaranteed.”

    BREAKING: FCTA seals PDP headquarters

The Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) on Monday ordered the sealing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, over the party’s failure to pay statutory ground rent for several years.

At about 2:04 p.m., enforcement officials from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), backed by a joint task force of armed military personnel, police, civil defence, and vehicle inspection officers, arrived at the PDP headquarters in Abuja to carry out the directive.

Upon arrival, the enforcement team met resistance as party staff locked the main gate from inside, preventing access. In response, the FCDA team chained the gate and displayed a large seal notice declaring, “This property is now owned by FCTA. 26-5-25.”

JUST IN: PDP crisis deepens as Wike ‘pulls out of all agreements’

…says Makinde is architect of party’s crisis

…vows to fight on till justice is served

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared his withdrawal from all previously reached agreements aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), pledging to continue the struggle until justice is achieved.

In a personally signed statement on Sunday titled “PDP Crisis: My Position,” Wike expressed concerns over what he described as consistent breaches of agreed resolutions, specifically blaming Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for fueling the party’s internal problems.

“I told Governor Makinde that non-adherence to agreements is the root of the PDP’s current troubles and that he remains the chief culprit in this regard,” Wike stated.

He stressed that the agreements, including the recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary in line with the Supreme Court judgment, withdrawal of all legal cases involving Rivers State by the party’s National Legal Adviser, and the immediate discontinuation of the suit seeking a state of emergency in Rivers, must be upheld without deviation.

Wike maintained that since the concerned parties had failed to honour these resolutions, he was left with no choice but to withdraw from the reconciliation process and continue his fight for justice within the party.

The statement read in part, “Since after the 2023 General election, the PDP has been wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another, owing fundamentally to dishonesty and lack of trust amongst its key stakeholders. To stem this ugly trend, efforts have been made to arrest this pernicious virus of dishonesty and treachery and enthrone fidelity to agreements with a view to stabilizing the party and moving it forward.

“To this end, a meeting of the G5 was held in Lagos. In that meeting, I made it clear to the Governor of Oyo State, HE. Seyi Makinde, that he was the architect of our problems, pointing out to him that non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party, and that he was the chief culprit of this anomaly. At the end of the meeting, we resolved to bury the hatchet and make progress.

“As a follow-up to the aforementioned meeting, there was an expanded meeting in Abuja involving HE. Seyi Makinde, HE. Umaru Fintri, HE. Bala Mohammed, HE, Bukola Saraki, and I in Saraki’s guest house. In that meeting, I made it clear that I had no personal problems with HE. Bala Mohammed, except that he hides under the facade of Chairman of PDP Governors Forum to serially renege on agreements. Tensions rose mightily in the meeting and it took all concerned to calm frayed nerves. At the end of the meeting, we came to some resolutions, including: that Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the National Secretary of the PDP in tandem with the Supreme Court judgement, all legal matters relating to Rivers State must be withdrawn by the National Legal Adviser, the suit on the State of emergency be withdrawn forthwith, and nobody should deviate from the agreements so reached.

“In the light of the foregoing, they pleaded with me to attend the stakeholders’ meeting at the Bauchi Government Lodge, regardless of my many engagements. I attended the meeting and clearly reiterated my earlier concerns, and to this end and in order to resolve all other lingering and pending issues, a committee was formed, headed by HE. Bukola Saraki.

“It is disheartening to note that even before the Bukola Saraki Reconciliation Committee began its work, the gentleman’s agreement we reached at Saraki’s Guest House was already being crudely violated. To my chagrin, Seyi Makinde had connived with Peter Mba of Enugu State to orchestrate the summoning of the meeting of so-called South-East leaders to recommend that if Ude Okoye was not adopted as Secretary, they would pull out of the PDP. I have since granted an interview to the effect that, that resolution of the South-East leaders can not hold.

“Again, Seyi Makinde organized some people in the National Secretariat to insist that the Deputy National Secretary should act as National Secretary, in violation of the agreement earlier reached. To attempt to give credence to this farce, a letter was written by the Deputy National Secretary, calling for a meeting of the NEC of the party. Furthermore, the letter confirming the candidacy of the Governorship candidate of the party in the forthcoming Governorship elections in Anambra State, duly signed by the National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu and the acting National Chairman, was portrayed as rejected by the party through a rebuttal letter signed by the National Publicity Secretary, acting on the orders of Seyi Makinde and Peter Mba.

“All these actions are in complete violation of the agreements reached and would not do the party any good whatsoever. On the 24th of May 2025, in Jos, for instance, a well publicized and properly attended zonal elective congress of the PDP was aborted because the letter inviting INEC to the congress was signed by the Deputy National Secretary of the party. INEC refused to attend because the proper signatory recognized by law, that is Senator Samuel Anyanwu, was not a signatory to the invitation notice. This is undeniably distasteful, provocative and annoying, to say the least.

“I have painstakingly put out all these facts so that PDP members and the general public would know the truth. I have been in this party since 1998 and have worked tirelessly for the survival of this party with all my strength and it is on record that none of these persons have done anything close to what I have done to sustain this party. What is more painful is that I contributed substantially to most of these governors winning their elections, yet I have not made any personal demands on any of them and I would never do so.

“Most importantly, I had thought that we could keep the trust amongst us, but since it is now obvious that they would continue to play games to the detriment of the party, as is the case in the current debacle in the North-Central zonal elections, I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. I have decided to fight on until justice is attained.”

Moro dismisses one-party state fears, reaffirms PDP’s resilience in North Central

Contrary to the opinion being held in some quarters, the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party is not collapsing.

Also reacting to insinuations that the country was heading towards a one-party state, Moro dismissed this and expressed confidence that Nigeria would not slide to a one-party state.

Moro, a former  Interior Minister, speaking in Jos, Plateau State, on Saturday, during the party’s North Central Zonal Elective Congress, disclosed that the challenge facing the party was temporary, insisting that the PDP would bounce back with the emergence of the new crop of leaders.

He said, “It has been a very successful event. You can see the enthusiasm; delegates from across the Zone, including the FCT, are excited and happy that the exercises are taking place today. As you well know, this is one in a series of activities the PDP has lined up in response to the seeming crisis within the party.

“These activities are all leading up to the National Convention for the election of a brand new party leadership. Let’s not forget that the apparent crisis in the party stems from a leadership struggle. But with new leaders being elected from the Ward to the Local Government, then to the State and now the Zonal levels, and eventually at the National Convention, this process will breathe new life into the PDP.

“The Party will continue to grow stronger. With the impressive turnout here, representing all corners of the North Central zone, and with leaders like former Governor Saraki and the rest of us present, I can confidently assure you that the PDP is not collapsing, contrary to insinuations.

“I have no fear of Nigeria becoming a one-party state. Not at all. I don’t believe that’s a likely outcome. Yes, defections have a ripple effect, and the initial shock can be significant. But after that, PDP members will regroup, recommit, and rededicate themselves to the cause. I am confident that the PDP is coming back stronger.”

While addressing the party faithful at the event, the Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, noted, “Democracy is the foundation of our governance, and that is why we continue to uphold our Constitution by ensuring that elections are held periodically, as enshrined in that sacred document.

“Let me sincerely thank the National Vice Chairman and his team. They have led us creditably over the last eight years. Now, the time has come to elect a new set of executives. I’m confident that all the States’ Chapters have done a beautiful job, and your choices have been duly ratified to represent us at the zonal level.

“Let me also congratulate those who have emerged from their various states. Your victory is a mark of trust; your people believe in you. And to those who were persuaded to step down and agreed to do so, I thank you most profoundly. You have shown true loyalty and maturity.”

He stated, “You’ve demonstrated that the interest and survival of the Party is greater than any personal ambition. I want you to know that the Party will never forget this noble sacrifice. On behalf of the Party leadership in the zone, I thank you for making this process seamless.

“As we begin the voting process, I urge us all to ensure that it is peaceful and rancour-free. To anyone who may be called upon to make sacrifices for the Party’s future, I want you to know that it is not a burden; it is an honour.

“We must remain on that path of selflessness and commitment to ensure the PDP endures for the good of the Nigerian people.”

Chairman of the electoral committee, Hon. Tanimu Turaki  said Ajiya got 18 votes.

Ajiya had previously  accused two PDP leaders of spearheading a plot to impose  Takushara on the party.

He said “The election is not about me. It is about  whether we will have a PDP that truly belongs to its members or one  that becomes an extension of the ruling party.”
