    PDP accepts defeat

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola on his re-election last Saturday.

In a statement yesterday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Chief Olisa Metuh praised his party’s candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, for “his impressive outing” at the election.

Metuh said: “After a careful appraisal of the overall conduct of the election, the national leadership of the PDP, in spite of perceived anomalies, hereby accepts the result and congratulates Aregbesola on his re-election.

“This is entirely in the interest of the growth of democracy, peace and political stability of the country in line with the PDP’s ideology and the visions of its founding fathers.”

The party hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for “creating the enabling environment for Osun people to freely and peacefully exercise their franchise without rancour or blood-letting”.

It also hailed security agencies for keeping the peace during the poll.

The party said: “The PDP urges Nigerians to note that for the All Progressives Congress (APC), elections are only free and fair when they win and rigged when they lose. Such is not acceptable in a democracy.

“While urging the APC to learn from the election and desist from actions and utterances that overheat the system and create room for violence, we call on Nigerians to mark the trends and make their deductions regarding which party is actually committed to the survival and growth of democracy in Nigeria.”

The PDP urged its members and supporters to remain calm and praised Osun people for conducting themselves with decorum.

    Osun PDP rejects result

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has rejected the result of last Saturday’s election.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated Senator Iyiola Omisore of the PDP with 394,684 votes.

    Omisore had 292,747 votes.

PDP State Publicity Director Prince Bola Ajao told reporters that his party refused to sign the result sheet because there were issues to be addressed about the poll.

Representatives of 19 other parties, which participated in the election, including the Labour Party (LP) and Accord, signed the result sheet.

Ajao said the party would not take a position on the outcome of the poll until it has critically studied it.

Kwara APC accuses PDP of using police to seal office

The Kwara State All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the opposition ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of using security agents to seal its office at Oke-Ero Local Government Area.

But the command said its action was to prevent anarchy, as the two parties were laying claim to the property.

APC accused a worker of the Itesiwaju Cooperative Society and a card-carrying member of the PDP of being behind the “illegal lock-out, having boasted that he would eject the APC from the building.”

In a statement by council Chairman and APC’s Secretary Chief Joseph Adeniyi and Alhaji Azeez Amuda said the development portends grave danger for democracy.

The statement reads: “The APC, which has been the legal occupant of the property since the breakage of the PDP in November last year, renewed its tenancy in May.

“The party has held over 30 meetings since without any molestation until the PDP claimed the building in June. The settlement brokered by the owner and the Oke-Ero divisional police officer was resolved in our favour.

“As a law-abiding party, we are worried by this act of persecution and lawlessness.

Police spokesperson Ajayi Okasanmi said the police sealed the complex to prevent anarchy.

He said the “Police Commissioner, Ambrose Aisabor, has ordered the contending parties to settle out of court.

‘’When the court has pronounced the rightful tenant, we’ll  reopen the building. The office wasn’t sealed in bad faith.”

Niger East: APC alleges harassment by PDP thugs

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State has alleged that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is using thugs to harass its members ahead of the August 30 Niger East by-election.

State Publicity Secretary Jonathan Vatsa yesterday in Minna, cited attacks on the party’s Legal adviser Khaleal Ibrahim on Saturday by alleged agents of PDP, at Paiko.

Vatsa said the thugs attacked and dispossessed Ibrahim of his mobile phone and stole his money.

The APC chieftain said some of its members from Rafi local government area were on Wednesday waylaid by thugs, who inflicted injuries on them.

He said: “We can’t be intimidated because I said the APC does not have confidence in the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

“We accused the REC of collecting money from the state and the government agreed it  released N28 million to the committee set up by INEC, chaired by the REC.’’

Vatsa said “intimidating APC members cannot deter the party because the party has a good candidate in David Umaru, we also know that as they did in other places, they will want to use the military to intimidate us,  but the people will resist intimidation.”

  • PDP wants to stage civilian coup in Osun, says Aregbesola

PDP wants to stage civilian coup in Osun, says Aregbesola

    • Mixed reactions trail poll

Mixed reactions yesterday trailed the governorship election in Osun State.

While a cross section of party leaders hailed the electoral commission and security agencies for patriotism and commitment to the sanctity of the ballot box, others said that they could have performed better.

Prominent politicians, including former Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Rauf Aregbesola, his deputy, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, said that the militarisation of the state and the arrest of chieftains of the ruling party provoked anxiety and fear.

The governor, who highlighted some irregularities that marred the exercise, said that the PDP wanted to stage a civilian coup, adding that the state is under the siege of the gun.

There was tension in many parts of the state following the harassment and arrest of many All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and followers by the police. However, the tension subsided, shortly after the commencement of the accreditation of voters when the chieftains were released.

Among the APC leaders arrested were the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Wale Afolabi, his Ministry of Agriculture counterpart, Wale Adedoyin, Mr. Tijani Oladosu and party supporters. Adedoyin said that no fewer than 50 supporters were hounded into detention by the police. Another chieftain, Bamisaye, a legislator from Ilesa, had to run into the bush to escape arrest.

Also, APC, Labour Party and Social Democratic Party (SDP) chieftains protested to the electoral commission that party agents were not allowed to monitor voting by INEC officials and security agents, owing to the lack of identification tags in Ile-Ife area. To douse the anxiety, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje, directed that some officials issue the tags to the affected agents.

The REC explained that the non-issuance of tags to the agents was not deliberate, adding that the complaint had been taken up. Agbaje said: “I have received calls from party leaders on the complaint. Many party agents did not show up with their tags. They did not go to the polling booths with tags. We have directed that the specific electoral officer should return to the INEC Office to release the tags to them.”

From 8 am to 4pm, movement was restricted across the state. The weather was benevolent. Voters stormed polling units across the three senatorial districts and six zones for accreditation. Owing to the huge turn -out, accreditation could not be completed at noon. However, prospective voters who came late were not allowed to join the queue by polling officers and security agents.

Ahead of the poll, sensitive and non-sensitive polling materials had been deployed to the local governments. Although there were reports of delay in some polling units, the anxiety triggered by the delay fizzled out when the polling officers arrived.

There was massive presence of security men at polling centres. Police helicopters hovered around the state in surveillance.  Unlike previous polls, there were no complaints about shortage of voting materials, late coming by polling officers, absence of accreditation materials, lack of voters’ register and harassment and molestation of voters by security agents.  Also, there was no case of ballot snatching by thugs.

Hailing the peaceful atmosphere in Iragbiji, where he voted, the Chief of Staff to Osun State Governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, observed that people turned out en mass to perforce their civic right. “As at now, all is calm. The turn -out is huge,” he said, shortly after his accreditation.

The deputy governor, Mrs. Grace Tomori-Laoye, who voted at Owo-Ope area of Osogbo, the state capital, said that, although she was impressed by the large-turn-out, the complaints by party chieftains that some members were arrested by the police without justification were worrisome.

She said: “I did not sleep throughout the night. A lot of our members, APC members, were harassed, molested, and picked up by the police. In Oba-Oke, the monarch called me that the town was in turmoil. The youth leader was picked.

“There were attempts to arrest Senator Adebayo Salami. In Ede, there were attempts to arrest Senator Isiaka Adeleke. Two commissioners were arrested. A party chieftain, Owonikoko, was also picked. I called the police. The police denied. Some people are threatening to disrupt voting. The policemen were tying an ankara and they said that they covered their faces”.

Hon. Bamisaye said that “hired policemen had chased APC members into the bush in Ljesa area”. He added on phone: “I can’t reveal where I am now. I escaped into the bush. Many of our leaders are in the bush; wounded. We don’t know whether they are policemen or fake police”.

Former Governor Adeleke, who protested assault on his residence, said: “I had relocated from my house to my mother’s house to vote. At 1 am on the eve of the poll, a van containing military men, SSS, police with AK 47 came to my house. I was taking my bath. They said I should open my gates. I said no. They started shooting. Five minutes later, they left. They covered their faces”.

Adedoyin, who was released around 11.30 am, said the arrest of party leaders was unfortunate. Narrating his ordeal, he said: “Around 9.15 pm, some people were banging my gate in my house at Ilesa. They said I should open the gate. I reported to the SSS. The SSS said that I should not open. After 15 minutes, one of them jumped the fence into my house. They said that, if I don’t open my door, they will blow up my house. They said they wanted to interrogate me at their office in Osogbo.”

Akande, who voted at Ila, complained that the accreditation was flawed, blaming the INEC for inefficiency. He said, if care was not taken, the poll may be the worst in the history of the country.

The elder statesmen also objected to the decision by some INEC staff to stop the voters from folding the ballot papers after voting, saying that they had the constitutional right to do so. He said: “Voters are at liberty to fold the ballot box before dropping it. A voter can even put the ballot paper inside his pocket and refuse to drop it”

Akande also berated the security agents for molesting APC supporters, saying that it was part of the move to disperse the chieftains and divert their attention. He added: “An old man of over 80 years was seized at Ifedayo local government and dropped at Osogbo. We called his children to go and pick him up.”

Lamenting his arrest, Afolabi said: “They took my car key from me and pushed me inside the police station. I am a lawyer and chief law officer of the state. I met the Agriculture commissioner there. They asked me to write a statement. SSS interrogated us. 50 members of our party are still in detention now. They said they released me on bail later. I didn’t have any incriminating material in my car. If this could happen to me, you could imagine what would have happened to other members of the party.”

After he was accredited around 10.45 am, Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who was accompanied by his mother, wife, Sherifat and children, urged the people to remain calm and shun unruly behaviour. He chided the security agents for committing terror against the people.

He said: “Nobody can abort the people’s will. What is important is to encourage our people to follow up the process, stand by the ballot until the votes are counted and results announced”.

Aregbesola alleged that “some law enforcement officers have abused their duties”, adding that the state was not seized by violence because the peace-loving people of Osun State were determined to maintain peace and defend democracy.

The governor added: “The behaviour of the some officers has made the process leading to the actual right to vote is flawed. The problem is not with the people, but with the institutions charged with the conduct of the election. INEC’s failure to provide accredited party agents adequate tags is bad. This has implications for election monitoring. There is no justification for denying party agents identity tags.

“APC agents in Osigbo, Atakumosa, Ifedayo and other places could not monitor the process from the beginning to ascertain whether the process is good. Also, not all security agents maintained neutrality. The crackdown on APC leaders was unwarranted. They were, molested, brutalised and incarcerated.

“The Attorney-General was manhandled and detained without any charge. The Agriculture commissioner was abducted and released at 11.30am. Segun Olanibi is in detention. Their crime is that they are chieftains of the APC. Osun is under the siege of the gun. What does the federal government want? Do they want to force their candidate on the people or they want the people to exercise their right to vote. They want to stage a civilian coup in Osun.”

  • 2015: PDP, APGA pact collapses

    2015: PDP, APGA pact collapses

The romance between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) may be over if the decision of some federal lawmakers in Anambra State to ditch APGA for the ruling party is anything to go by, reports Assistant Editor, Remi Adelowo

The exit of Mr. Peter Obi as the Anambra State governor appears to be generating unexpected developments within his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Almost five months after he stepped down as the Anambra helmsman, following the expiration of his two terms in office, Obi has slowed down on his political activities within his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and only making few appearances at mostly religious events.

While he held sway as governor, elected on the platform of an opposition party, Obi enjoyed a close relationship with the presidency much to the discomfort of three other South-East governors who belong to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

That the former was one man in whom President Goodluck Jonathan was well pleased was  not in doubt. Not only was he appointed by the president as his Honourary Economic Adviser, Obi was also appointed into the very powerful Economic Management Team (EMT), which is the economic advisory body to the President. And for the entire period of his second term as governor, Obi also served as the Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum.

A few weeks before Obi handed over to his protégé, Willie Obiano, in March, speculations were rife that Jonathan had resolved to appoint him as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to replace Anyim Pius Anyim as compensation for his loyalty.

Not sure of the president’s stance on the issue, sources disclosed that the report resulted into a crisis of confidence between Obi and Anyim, even as some powerful figures in the PDP were alleged to have fiercely opposed the idea.

Then, came another report that Obi would be appointed as the new Minister of Aviation to replace Ms. Stella Oduah who reportedly resigned on February 12 in connection with her alleged role in the controversial purchase of two BMW cars for N255 million for her personal use.

As days rolled into weeks and weeks into months, Anyim not only managed to hold on to his seat, the president had also appointed a new Aviation Minister in the person of the former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osita Chidoka.

Weeks before Chidoka’s appointment was made public, many key stakeholders were optimistic that Obi’s appointment into the Federal Executive Council (FEC) was a foregone conclusion.

In an interview with an online medium, an APGA chieftain and a member of the House of Representatives, Victor Ogene, defended the alleged plan by the President to pick the former governor as minister.

“The President appoints his ministers in conformity with the federal character principle and by that, each state is supposed to get at least one ministerial slot. The constitution did not talk about political parties. Secondly, the former governor (Obi) has acquainted himself very well and don’t forget that there has been precedents of people coming in from other political parties to be ministers.”

Speaking further on why Obi deserved to get the ministerial slot, Ogene argued, “Peter Obi has shown that beyond his own political meaning, he is one person who goes for anything Nigeria. He has distinguished himself in terms of work ethics, in terms of personal examples, in terms of infrastructural development and in terms of proper deployment of the resources of the people of Anambra State and I think he can replicate that in many folds at the federal level.

“With somebody like Mr. Peter Obi, who is “particular” for due process, you can be sure that that (the Aviation) sector would do him just better.”

So, what went wrong? The Nation gathered that while the President was initially disposed to having Obi to join his cabinet, hawks in his party and kitchen cabinet convinced him otherwise, arguing that doing so is tantamount to  strengthening opposition parties against the PDP ahead the 2015 general elections.

“Top PDP members vehemently kicked against any ministerial appointment for Obi. They told the President that if Obi wants to serve as minister, he should defect to the ruling party,” a source quipped.

Another PDP chieftain in Anambra State who spoke to The Nation on the condition of anonymity gave another version why Obi seems to have lost out in the power play. “The President has realised that Obi is not as popular as it was widely believed,” he said.

    Defection saga and APGA’s future

The defection of Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, a ranking member of the House of Representatives from Anambra State from APGA to the PDP a few days ago was as unexpected as it was shocking to many people in the state.

Ekwunife had hinged her decision to dump APGA on its factionalisation, alleged lack of internal democracy, coupled with lack of tolerance to contrary opinion by the party leadership.

Plans are alleged to have been concluded by three other federal lawmakers from the state to leave APGA for the PDP. Mentioned in the defection plot include the Deputy Spokesman of the lower House, Victor Afam Ogene; Deputy Chairman, Committee on Capital Market, Chris Azubogu and Cyril Egwuatu of Onitsha North/Onitsha South Federal Constituency.

On Thursday last week, the concerned lawmakers held a meeting with the National Chairman of the PDP, Adamu Muazu and other members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) where modalities for their defection were said to have been fine-tuned.

One major condition allegedly tabled by the lawmakers was the granting of a special waiver to enable them contest for a fresh term next year, a request that was speedily granted, according to a source privy to the outcome of the meeting.

The fractured relationship between PDP and APGA, a source revealed, is a deliberate policy by PDP National Chairman, Adamu Muazu, to strengthen and reposition the party irrespective of previous relationship that existed between the ruling party and other parties. “This policy will be strictly enforced no matter whose ox is gored,” said a source.

The APGA leadership is, however, not giving up in taking measures to keep its house in order.

A scheduled meeting convened by the Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, with the APGA lawmakers took place on the same day Muazu also met with the three politicians. The main agenda of the meeting was to plead with the lawmakers not to exacerbate the brewing crisis in the party and remain loyal to Obi, who is the party’s Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT).

But if the feelers from the camp of the lawmakers are anything to go by, their defection to the PDP, according to sources, would be formally effected in the next few weeks, even as another federal lawmaker from one of the federal constituencies in Awka, the state capital, is also allegedly muting the idea of jumping ship from APGA to the PDP.

Is this beginning of the end for APGA or would the party survive the ongoing attempts by federal forces to decimate its ranks? Time will tell.

  • Rivers…Between Riverine and Rivers Southeast

    Rivers…Between Riverine and Rivers Southeast

As we approach the 2015 general elections in Nigeria, Rivers State is on the spot for a lot of reasons. One, it has enormous voting strength capable of tilting the balance in favour of any political party in Nigeria; two, it has a popular incumbent who understands the levels of power and grassroots mobilisation; three, it is a multi-ethnic society with different ethnic groups on collision course on whose turn it is to produce the governor; four, the state has enormous human financial resources; and five, the state has wider implications for the larger Nigeria.

However, the governorship elections can be narrowed down to a two way battle between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The APC bench is sparse for good reasons though very formidable.  It is sparse because Governor Rotimi Amaechi has control of the party machinery.

The PDP has a full house of persons considered to be light weights, most of who may have jumped into the race without thinking through it, something politicians calls battle of second eleven.  One unique thing about the PDP candidates, however, is that all are claiming to have been endorsed by President Goodluck Jonathan or the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

Before Amaechi defected to the APC, Magnus Abe, a senator and Dakuku Peterside, a member of the House of Representatives, were considered clear favourites for the governorship ticket of the PDP.  The permutation is that their Senatorial District, Rivers Southeast is the only one yet to produce a governor.  When Amaechi moved, the duo moved with him leaving the field open for those considered second 11.  Abe and Peterside, tested grassroots mobilisers, were formidable foes to any opponent.  Abe’s greatest advantage is that he is a media personality and is blessed with the gift of articulation.  Peterside is considered humble, God-fearing, deft and a mobiliser.  He comes from the riverine part of the Rivers South east Senatorial District.  Riverine Ijaws have been at the fore front of agitation for governorship of Rivers State, the upland would by next year have had it for sixteen years at a stretch.

So, if the pendulum of zoning goes to Southeast Senatorial District, the race for the APC ticket is between Dakuku and Abe. On the other, if it is decided that no upland person should give the APC ticket a shot, then the riverine takes the ticket and Dakuku is the clear favourite. He is the only major contender who is riverine and is also from the Rivers Southeast Senatorial District.

For the PDP, it has two big hurdles to face: one is the ability to choose a candidate acceptable to most of the stakeholders from the crowd; and two, what to do with Nyesom Wike, who is Ikwerre like Amaechi.

At the last count, PDP has about 18 aspirants.  Some of them are Alabo Paworiso Samuel Horsfall, Dumo Lulu Briggs, Nimi Walson-Jack, Reynolds Dagogo-Jack, Engr. Emma Princewill, Major Lancelot Ayanya, Prince Uche Secondus, Senator George Sekibo, Ateke Tom, Prince Tonye Princewill, Prof. Don Baridam, Senator Lee Maeba, Faafaa Dan Princewill, Hon. Ibinabo Michael West and Nyesom Wike amongst many others.

Of the 18 aspirants, more than eleven are from the riverine part of the state considered the natural geo-political zone to produce the next governor. Two are Ogonis, another part of the upland though in Rivers Southeast Senatorial District agitating to produce governor in 2015.

The real issue in PDP is who has the will of Jonathan.  It is clear to all that Wike is carrying the anointing of the First Lady.  The second real issue is the fact that Wike has a stranglehold of the party structure in Rivers State to the exclusion of all other aspirants.  There is no doubt that if things continue the way they are now, Wike can start celebrating his emergence as PDP standard bearer in 2015.  How the emergence of Wike will translate to votes in the general elections is a different issue. The APC needs to just pick the right candidate from the area that has not had it since 1999, the race is won and lost. It is sure the party to beat. PDP is only struggling.

Osun election: APC uncovers PDP’s alleged rigging plans

Ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has uncovered a ‘secret’ document on how the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) allegedly intends to rig the election.
The National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun in a statement on Thursday said the document, marked boldly as ‘CONFIDENTIAL’, a copy of which is now in the possession of APC, Osun, contains the program of the PDP to rig the election and the projected results from the rigging exercise.
The full text of the statement reads as follows:

“De-register 47,000 by deleting their names from the Register. This is certainly to disenfranchise them on Saturday.

“Programmed ballot paper designed. By this, the import is that the voting becomes distorted in favour of the PDP through a chemical process.

“Programmed thumbprint. This is being done with a view of accounting for the lacunae created between those disenfranchised and those that failed to turn up for voting.

    “Impression on the ballot papers

“Vanishing ink on the programmed ballot paper.

“These two processes are part of the grandplan to manipulate the process through scientific rigging.

    “Polling units 1195

The document further contains a meticulous outline of plans to rig the election Polling Unit by Polling Unit using pre-programmed ballot papers already designed, and thumb printed with vanishing ink in favor of PDP. The document further contains the plan to deploy specified numbers of impression ballot papers and vanishing ink in 1,195 polling units across 155 wards in all Local Government Areas in Osun. This, by their machination is expected to award the PDP a whooping 406,916 votes even before voting commences!

This elaborate and audacious plan is to be carried out in connivance with key INEC officials from the National headquarters, and those deployed from other states with staunch backing of all security agencies deployed for the election, with particularly mobilized personnel, former militants and masked thugs impersonating security officials under a combined team code named ‘Election Task Force’ directly under the instructions of Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro (Minister of State for Defence) and Jelili Adesiyan (Minister of Police Affairs), Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode and Mr. Chris Uba mandated to intimidate and harass APC party chieftains, agents and sympathizers who are uncompromising or refuse their offer of filthy lucre.

Evidently, PDP’s repeated boasts that it would capture Osun is predicated on this grand plan. This cannot be regarded as an empty boast considering the chronicle of recent PDP ‘abracadabras’ in Delta Senatorial, Anambra governorship and Ekiti governorship elections. All these points to the fact that PDP’s devilish plans to destroy our nascent democracy would stop at nothing to achieve its aim.

We hereby put all stakeholders on red-alert. We call on Prof. Jega to ensure that his name does not go down in infamy as some others have. We also call on the new IGP, Mr. Abba and other security agents to show to Nigerians that they are truly professional and men and women of honor. We appeal to all Nigerians and particularly the Osun electorates to be extra vigilant and ensure that, their will is not subverted by this on-rushing brigade of evil. On our part, we shall put all machinery in place to safeguard the mandate of our teeming supporters as we shall resist all forms of intimidation or devilish manipulation of the voting process,

According to our source, in the unlikely event that the above fails, violence must be unleashed on the people so as to forestall the announcement of the winner. In furtherance of this, Chris Ubah has been allocated fifty soldiers to terrorise , intimidate and maim the Osun voters. Additionally, to compliment this act of brigandage, three hundred thugs are camped by Omisore at Ballam Hotel, Bolonduro and are with unclaimed voters card.

  • PDP accuses APC of plotting ‘Arab Spring’

PDP accuses APC of plotting ‘Arab Spring’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to ignite the “Arab Spring”, should the party lose Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.

The PDP was reacting to a statement by the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, that the party would set up a parallel government, if the PDP rigged the election.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Abuja, PDP National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh said Odigie-Oyegun’s statement was an invitation to “Arab Spring”.

The Arab Spring was a people’s revolt that swept through many misgoverned countries in the Arab world in 2012. Some dictators were toppled in some of the countries.

But Metuh would not say if the PDP intended to rig the election, which the APC chair warned against; or, if he disagreed that the country was being misgoverned by the PDP-led Federal Government.

He said: “Nigerians need to be reminded that the APC’s understanding of rigging is where they lose an election. Whenever they win, as was the case in Edo, it is free and fair.

“It is a globally acknowledged fact that shadow or parallel governments have no place in a presidential system. Therefore, the threat to institute such is nothing short of implementing the agenda to destabilise and collapse the democratic system and institute a reign of anarchy.

“The statement by the APC National Chairman, therefore, has confirmed our position that the APC is not planning for the 2015 elections but an overthrow of a democratically elected government, having realised that they cannot and will not win in the general elections.”

The ruling party said the statement raised the suspicion that the APC leaders had been holding meetings outside the country to enact an Arab Spring to forcefully take over power, if they lose in 2015.

“This explains why they have been making inflammatory statements and publishing negative advertorials and articles in local and foreign media to incite Nigerians, embolden insurgents and stir hatred and division among the populace while balkanising the nation along its fault lines.

“All the pockets of anti-government protests and calls for civil disobedience in parts of the country bear the imprints of the APC and are geared towards cultivating a fertile ground for them to unleash a reign of terror against the country.

“The importation of thugs to cause confusion in elections, including in Anambra, Ekiti and now Osun, are all part of the plot to discredit the electoral system and truncate the 2015 elections.

“The attacks on institutions of government, including the Judiciary and the security agencies, are all part of the larger plot to weaken government systems and make them vulnerable and powerless and set the stage for the materialisation of their ignoble plans.

“Nigerians are also aware of the hiring of foreign consultants by the APC to tarnish the image of the country abroad, as a means to gain foreign support when they eventually strike.

“We, therefore, call on Nigerians to be ready to defend their hard-earned democracy and protect it from encircling vultures who are hell-bent at taking us back to the dark ages.”
