Ex-Kaduna Senator Danjuma La’ah quits PDP, three Assembly members defect to APC in Kaduna

A two-term senator who represented the Kaduna South Senatorial Zone, Danjuma La’ah, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This was even as three opposition members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the impressive performance of Governor Uba Sani as their reason for leaving PDP.

La’ah, who served in the National Assembly for eight years, submitted his resignation letter to the Ward Chairman of PDP Mallagum Ward, Kaura Local Government Area, on February 4.

In his letter, sighted by our correspondent in Kaduna on Friday, La’ah emphasised that his decision to leave the party was personal and did not affect his relationship with the people.

“I humbly write to notify the leadership and members of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mallagum Ward, Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State of my resignation from the party with effect from 4/02/025.

“I, however, thank each of you for your cooperation and support given to me, particularly during my eight-year tenure as Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial Zone, at the National Assembly, Abuja,” La’ah stated in his letter.

La’ah also expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure and wished his former party members success in their future endeavours.

“My resignation, which is personal, doesn’t affect my relationship with the people. I therefore wish everyone the best in all future endeavours,” he added.

La’ah’s resignation has sparked speculation about his next political move, as the party he plans to join remains unknown.

Also, the three state lawmakers who defected from PDP to APC are Henry Marah representing Jaba state Constituency; Emmanuel Kantiok, Zonkwa Constituency; and Samuel Kambai, representing the Zangon Kataf Constituency.

They made their defection to the APC at their various wards on Thursday.

Their defection came just two days after the member representing Zangon Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Amos Magaji also decamped to the APC from PDP.

According to the three lawmakers, their defection was to align with the ruling party at the state level because of the sterling leadership and performance exhibited by Governor Sani, adding that the political future of their constituents was sacrosanct, and they believed that they would serve their people better in the ruling party.

Marah, who is also the spokesman of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, stated that PDP’s popularity and dominance in Southern Kaduna have crumbled.

He also stated that the achievements of Governor Sani have erased animosity towards the ruling party as peace, security and unity have returned to Southern Kaduna under the present administration.

He observed that the achievements of the state governor have erased animosity towards the ruling party and effectively ‘killed’ the opposition parties in the state.

“A major realignment in the power structure of the State House of Assembly is looming as we’re expecting more opposition members to dump the PDP for APC,” Mara said.

    …zonal secretary clashes with Orbih

The South-South Zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been thrown into crisis following a meeting convened by the party’s zonal leadership in Benin, Edo State, on February 15.

Reports indicate that the meeting, called by PDP South-South National Vice-Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, has sparked tensions within the zone.

The South-South Zonal Secretary of the party, Chief Felix Omemu, condemned the planned gathering on Thursday, describing it as illegal and cautioning party members against attending.

In a statement, Omemu argued that the meeting violated the PDP Constitution, which mandates that the Zonal Executive Council can only convene a meeting with the approval of the Zonal Working Committee.

He further stated that no such approval had been given, raising concerns over the legitimacy of the meeting.

He said: “In line with Section 26, (2c) of our party’s Constitution as amended in 2017, there was no such a time that the Zonal Working Committee meeting being a precursor to the Zonal Executive Committee agreed on any reports to be discussed at the Saturday’s scheduled meeting.

‘’As the Zonal Secretary of the party, I am therefore, not aware of such a meeting that purportedly resolved that ZWC could go ahead to convene the highest meeting of the party leaders in the Zone and so, I wish to distance myself from such an illegal ZEC meeting and gathering being called by Chief Dan Orbih”.

Omemu urged PDP leaders in the zone to avoid the meeting, alleging that it was convened to further harm the party’s interests.

He said: “I also wish to call on my colleagues in the zone to boycott Saturday’s meeting whose agenda remains suspicious and may not likely serve the general interest of the party as it is clear that the majority of the leaders of the party in the zone were not duly consulted before calling for the meeting.

‘’By this statement, I am placing on alert the key PDP leaders in the South-South zone including our state governors, former governors on the platform of the PDP, members of the National Assembly from the zone, Principal Officers of the State Houses of Assembly from the zone, members of the National Working Committee from the zone and also State Chairmen of our party from the zone.

‘’I urge the leaders of the party in the zone to call Chief Orbih to order a move to avoid any untoward consequences of allowing an illegal meeting to be held in the zone.’’

    • Damagum, Ologunagba take different  positions  on national secretary
    • Ortom, Anyanwu shun Ikimi panel

There seems no end in sight to the protracted crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The conflict escalated yesterday following the refusal of party bigwigs summoned to appear before a disciplinary committee headed by Chief Tom Ikimi.

Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom and embattled National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu declined the invitation.

Ortom said he could not bring himself to appear before a panel he described as illegal.

According to him, it is a violation of the party’s constitution and the Cybercrime Act.

He demanded an apology from the committee and threatened legal action.

Anyanwu wrote to the panel that he could not honour the invitation because he had a medical appointment.

Benue PDP Chairman Ezekiel Adaji, who was also invited by the committee, said it was curious that faceless people wrote petitions against him.

Adaji requested Ikimi to compel the petitioners to back their petitions with evidence.

The division in the National Working Committee (NWC) also widened yesterday over the national secretary saga.

National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba announced that in line with the position of the party’s governors’ forum and the Board of Trustees, the NWC had started taking steps to recognise Sunday Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary.

But the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, denied that the NWC had rejected Anyanwu as secretary, saying that Ologunagba expressed a personal view.

The Ikimi Committee, which was set up by the BoT, had summoned Anyanwu and Ortom, following petitions from some party members alleging anti-party activities by the two chieftains.

However, Ikimi explained that the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were not summoned by the panel because there was no petition against them.

    Panel illegal, says Ortom

Ortom protested the panel’s summons through a public notice as an affront.

He said: “This public notice has caused reputational harm and violates fundamental principles as enshrined in Section 57 of the PDP Constitution 2017 (as amended) and Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.”

In a letter dated February 11, 2025, Ortom’s lawyer, C.T. Mue, said the former governor was not formally notified of any allegations in writing before the press release on the summons was issued.

He also complained that “the National Disciplinary Committee lacks the jurisdiction to entertain any disciplinary action against them, making the purported inquiry procedurally defective and unconstitutional.”

Emphasising that the committee violated Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act 2015, Mue said: “The premature publication of allegations against our client, without being duly informed, as provided by Section 57(4) of the Constitution of PDP 2017 (as amended), has led to public ridicule and reputational harm.

“In light of the above, we hereby demand as follows: ‘That the National Disciplinary Committee immediately withdraw the Press Release issued on 5th February 2025.

“’That a written apology be issued to our client within 48 hours of receiving this Notice.

“’That the National Disciplinary Committee cease and desist from further public commentary on our clients’ matter until they have been formally notified of any allegations and given an opportunity to respond.

“Failure to comply with these demands within 48 hours from receipt of this letter will leave our client with no choice but to seek redress in a court of law, including instituting a defamation lawsuit and petitioning law enforcement agencies for violations of the Cybercrimes Act 2015.”

‘Why Atiku, Wike were not invited’

Ikimi told reporters at the Legacy House in Abuja where the panel is sitting that the panel will not invite Atiku and Wike unless there are petitions against them.

Accompanied by other members of the committee –  Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), Patrick Ifo, Ibrahim Shekarau and Sam Egwu – the chairman said the panel had deferred its hearing by two weeks.

Ikimi said the committee can only investigate anti-party activities from 2015 if there are petitions.

He added: “Whether acts were committed against the party in 2015, 2019, 2020 or any other year, we can do nothing about them, except there are petitions sent to this committee.

“This committee does not write petitions; we only attend to petitions that are sent to us.

“So, if there is no petition against somebody, we are not going to do anything about it because that is not our business. I’m not out here to write petitions or deal with what is seen in newspapers.”

He faulted Ortom’s claim about public notice, saying that a letter of invitation was delivered to him.

Ikimi said: “Last Wednesday, we went through the various petitions before us and two petitions were slated for hearing today (yesterday).

“One petition was against the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the other against some members of the party from Benue, including former governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom and 10 others.

“We were prepared to hear the petition today; the petitions were served on them directly and through courier and we have evidence that the petitions arrived at their destinations.

“However, we could not proceed today due to correspondences received from these two persons we were supposed to meet.

“Former Secretary, Senator Anyanwu sent us a letter indicating that he was not well and that he had medical challenges, and a medical appointment.

“He backed that up with a letter from his hospital and his doctor. So, he asked for another date.

“In the case of Samuel Ortom and others, they claimed that they had not received the invitations which were sent to them.

“But the invitations were sent and we have evidence that they were sent to them.

“However, the committee has met and because we believe that we should give everyone a fair hearing and that we should not ignore issues like health challenges, we have decided to defer the hearing by another two to three weeks.

“So, we have deferred the hearing to 4th of March. We believe that all will be well and the committee is going to be fair to everyone.”

Why I won’t appear, by Benue PDP Chairman

Adaji said he may not appear before the committee because “ghost members” wrote petitions against him.

He said the petitioners should submit evidence to back their allegations, adding that “petitioners should also provide evidence of their membership of the party, if any”.

Adaji, who confirmed the receipt of the letter from the committee, forwarded a letter to Ikimi requesting the identities of the petitioners.

He said: “There is no group of the PDP in Benue State known as Benue PDP Youths Conscience.

“The people who have signed the petition have not identified themselves as members of the PDP and are unknown to PDP, Benue State chapter.

“The petition has not specified the acts consisting of the alleged anti-party activities.

“The petitioners have also not accompanied the petition with the ‘pictorial, voice and video evidences’ (sic) which they intend to present at the hearing of the petition before the Disciplinary Committee.”

    Split in NWC over secretary

Although Ologunagba said in a statement that the NWC had resolved to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the recognition of Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary ‘in line with the judgment of the Court of Appeal,” Damagum disagreed, saying that the case is inconclusive.

Ologunagba said: “After due consideration of the memo and the attachments, the NWC overwhelmingly recognises, acknowledges and confirms Rt. Hon. S.K.E Udeh Okoye as the substantive National Secretary of the PDP in full compliance with and obedience to the judgment of the Court of Appeal, recognising that there is no subsisting or superseding judgment or order from any Court of superior authority or hierarchy.

“The NWC has commenced the transmission of its Resolution/Decision affirming Rt. Hon. S.K.E Udeh Okoye as the PDP National Secretary to INEC and other relevant bodies for recognition in line with the judgment of the Court of Appeal.”

However, Damagum said there was no such resolution by the NWC.

He stressed: “NWC did not meet today; there was a WhatsApp discussion, but  the Court of Appeal status quo ante bellum still stands.”

Anyanwu also objected to Ologunagba’s claim, saying that “it is very improbable for the PDP NWC to take further decisions on a matter that is still in court.”

He added: “The NWC never met; that is Ologunagba and a few others’ position. The matter was only discussed on the WhatsApp platform.

“Therefore, the NWC has not met regarding it, as the matter is still in court.”

Kebbi PDP Rep dumps party for APC

Within 24 hours, main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives has lost the second member to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

On Tuesday, the party’s member representing Java/Zango Kataf Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, Amos Gwamna Magaji, joined the APC.

The second defector is the member representing Koko/Besse/Mayama Federal Constituency of Kebbi State, Salisu Garba Koko. He announced his defection in a letter read at plenary by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Koko said his defection to the APC was informed by what he called the protracted crisis in the PDP, which has made it difficult for him to remain in the party.

But rising under a Point of Order, House Minority Leader Kingsley China dismissed the defector’s claim, saying the PDP was not experiencing what other parties had never passed through.

The Minority Leader said while some politicians might look for different excuses to defect, it was wrong of the defector to allege that there has been a protracted crisis in the PDP.

He urged the Speaker to declare vacant the seat of the defector – like he should also do to other defectors, in line with the Constitution – and make them go back to their constituents in another round of elections.

Also, Ben Etanebene (LP, Delta) wondered if those defecting would return to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to change their certificates of return which has their names, their parties, and federal constituencies.

He supported Chinda’s position that the seats of the defectors be declared vacant, in line with the stipulations of the Constitution.

But Speaker Abbas said only the courts of the land could declare the seats of members vacant, adding that the Green Chamber would act on the contents of the letters it gets from members.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Disciplinary Committee has no intention to invite former Vice President Atiku abubakar or FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike unless there are petitions against them, Chairman of the Committee, High Chief Tom Ukimi has said.

Flanked by 10 committee members, the Committee Secretary, Chief Eyitayo Jegede Hon Patrick Ifo and two Ex-Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano) and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi) while responding to reporters’ questions at Legacy House in Abuja on Wednesday on why his committee felt compelled to defer its hearing by about two weeks, Ikimi who also explained that the Committee’s review was not time-bound and petitioners may ask for it to look into matters dating back to 2015.

“Whether acts were committed against the party in 2015, 2019, 2020 or any other year, we can do nothing about them except there are petitions sent to this committee’ this committee does not write petitions, we only attend to petitions that are sent to us.

Hinting that former Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom may not be telling the truth, Ikimi asserted that his Committee has confirmed that contrary to claims by Ortom and others, the petitions against them were delivered with invitations for them to appear before the PDP Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday.

“Last week Wednesday we went through the various petitions before us and two petitions were slated for hearing today; one petition was against the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu and the other against some members of the party from Benue state, including former governor of Benue State, Dr. Samuel Ortom and ten others.

PDP NWC overrules suspension of party’s BoT Chairman Wabara

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the suspension of its Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, is a reckless and unconstitutional act that cannot be allowed to stand.

The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) said this yesterday in Abuja while reacting to the purported suspension of Wabara by the Abia State chapter of the party.

In a statement last night by its spokesman, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, the main opposition said the Abia State chapter of the party had gone beyond its constitutional capacity by taking such steps against Wabara who is covered from such decisions by the PDP constitution.

Ologunagba said: “The attention of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been drawn to the purported suspension of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of our great party, Distinguished Senator Adolphus Wabara, from the party.

“The NWC categorically dismisses the purported suspension as null and void and of no effect whatsoever not being consistent with the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017) and laid down Rules of our great party.

“For emphasis, no State Working Committee (NWC) has the power to suspend or take any disciplinary action against a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party without due recourse to the NWC, as clearly provided for under Section 57 (7) of the constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

“Section 57 (7) is unambiguous in providing that ‘Notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no Executive Committee at any level, except the National Executive Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governors or members of the National Assembly…’

“The explicit import of Section 57 (7) is that the Abia State chapter has no powers whatsoever to take any disciplinary action against the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, being a member of the National Executive Committee of the party.

“The PDP, therefore, condemns the purported suspension of Senator Wabara as reckless, and unconstitutional, and cautions those behind this act in defiance of the PDP constitution to retrace their steps as the NWC will not hesitate to take appropriate disciplinary actions to preserve the stability of our Party and the sanctity of its Constitution.

“The NWC calls on all leaders, critical stakeholders, members, and supporters of our party in Abia State, the Southeast Zone and indeed across the country to disregard the purported suspension.”

Earlier yesterday in a statement by the Abia State PDP Chairman Abraham Amah, the state chapter had announced the suspension of Wabara for alleged anti-party activities.

Amah said Wabara had been suspended for one month, pending the investigation of a seven-member disciplinary committee.
