    As PDP implodes

PDP has imploded again. That cannot be news to Nigerians who have come to know that party like their palms. But then am not referring to last week’s fracas at the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja over which the  member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State and spokesman of the Coalition of United Political Parties, the once – expelled, Ikenga Imo Ugochinye, so praised one of the cruiserweights, you would think that one had just won a national wrestling contest.

The bruising contest had erupted when thugs from the two flanks of the  embattled party  emerged, fighting for either of the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the former National Youth Leader Sunday Ude-Okoye – see the names, and mentally recall the unending imbroglio for the position of President of the senate in the Obasanjo years, and give yourself a good laugh. This cannot but be so as while in office, the U. S Ccommittee on Foreign Relations had long concluded that this is a party that thrives on rent seeking and clientelism. Giving Nigeria’s current challenges they are believing themselves as capable of winning elections in 2027, even without planning, without attempting a thorough cleasing of their Augean stable of a party.

    Let them carry go!

Resplendent in their VIP seats as the war raged were the big guns, who never stopped deluding themselves, calling PDP ‘our great party’, rather than a hollow party – the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.

BoT Secretary, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Hajia Inna Ciroma, Senator Ben Obi, Chairman of PDP Reconciliation Committee,  Gen. Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, among others.

The scene easily reminded me of what I wrote here recently in the tribute to my inimitable teacher, Dr Segun Osoba, to wit:”looking back now, one of the very important lessons I learned from him was the importance of understanding the past in order to appreciate the present, with a view to shaping the future. He taught us that history is not just a series of dates and events but a rich tapestry of human experiences, cultures, and traditions”.

So is it a tradition of the PDP to always implode?

Yes, of course, majorly because it have always been an ensemble of the same kind of people, united as President Obasanjo once said, by love of office, and patronage, or  a fresh craving for office.

Unfortunately, even if this were not the case, the mere presence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the party would have been enough to set it into a tailspin as has been the case since he returned from ACN, and later, APC.  When he exited the party for the ACN, it was for the sole purpose of wanting to emerge the Presidential candidadate of a party he did not found but which Ahmed Tinubu indulged him, and then went, solely on his own, to pick his VP without consultation.

He actually has never been able to invest the patience and intellectual depth needed to found a political party.

And that ambition to ride roughshod over any, and every, party to which he belongs, believing that money will make that a done deal.

I enjoin Nigerians to watch out as the equally ambitious politicians like Obi, Saraki, El Rufai, Ogbeni and others he must be surreptitiously romancing now, will not lie low and be prepared to play the monkey.

Let us hear how  President Segun Obasanjo situated this Atiku’s corrosive ambition on reliance on Marabouts.

He wrote in MY WATCH, Pages 31 – 32-

“What I did not know, which came out glaringly later … were his propensity to corruption, his tendency to disloyalty, his inability to say and stick to the truth all the time, a propensity for poor judgment, his belief and reliance on marabouts , his lack of transparency, his trust in money to buy his way out on all issues and his readiness to sacrifice morality, integrity, propriety truth and national interest”.

Had Atiku not sacrificed morality, he would have known how immoral it was to think that a Northerner should succeed President Muhammadu Buhari after completing two terms of 8 years. And to imagine that some myopic Northern leaders so supported him they bulldozed a frightened Aminu Tambuwal out of the race is insulting.

As a historian this leads me to my article of 16 January, 2011 titled:

    AS PDP IMPLODES –

    It reads:

It is a settled truism that a house built of spittle must, of necessity, collapse. So let it be with the Peoples’ Democratic Party which one of its unreflective past chairmen once said would rule Nigeria like forever. Since they do not read, he could never have heard about Hitler’s Third Reich. But then, we must not be deceived; for a dangerous game is afoot, and Nigerians, especially those in both the ACN and the Labour party, two parties currently receiving hordes of departing decampees from the PDP, and therefore, the  obvious gainers from the demise of the party, must show themselves much smarter than either the manipulators within the PDP or the miserable cast of individuals now jumping ship in droves, determined only to go out there to prostitute, profit and then promptly return to their vomit. Therefore, they must be understood for who they are, and must be kept at reasonable arm’s length.

They must be made to campaign for the presidential candidates of their new parties, whoever it turns out to be.

We said it long ago that the party’s Chairman, Board of Trustees will lead it  to its demise.

The hour has come and even with the very best of intentions, it is now beyond the PDP to save itself. But we must ensure that Nigeria does not go down with this ‘biggest rally’ in Africa.

I haven’t the slightest doubt that those now decamping are on a mission to go and find an avenue for their political ambitions whilst leaving their  supporters for the would-be PDP presidential candidate. In which case, the parties now receiving them in droves may actually  end up being  used and subsequently dumped. They must not be allowed to eat their cake and at the same time, have it.

The scenario building up before our very eyes is one more reason why the  Almighty God must always be given His full due of thanksgiving in all circumstances, as the holy writ enjoins us. He uses anybody, or anything, to accomplish His words and desires.  He appears ready to use a once, all-conquering, Obasanjo to set this country free. God in His infinite mercy is about taking plan – lessness, dubiety, profligacy and kleptomania out of our body politic. He is  setting us on the right path, in a way that Nigeria’s traducers would no longer blaspheme that  God gave us abundant resources but fools for leaders.

The implosion of the PDP must be celebrated like the Israelites did the unprecedented parting of the red sea. Or where today is Nigeria after 12 years of outright rudderless – ness in the hands of a manipulating, and thoroughly unfeeling PDP? What is the status of infrastructure stock, energy or security in a country that received, in the last 12 years, an unprecedented quantum of petro – dollars?

As you read this in the year of our Lord, 2011, twelve years into PDP’s stranglehold over the country, you do not have a dedicated road from Lagos to the nation’s capital, Abuja.

In my view, nothing better illustrates the complete irresponsibility of the PDP than the state of our roads; not even the equally parlous state of electricity after blowing 16 billion dollars? How can  PDP, buoyed together only by patronage, be so acutely bereft of a plan to genuinely move this country forward, not as in their slogans, but genuinely, for the sake of today’s, and even unborn Nigerian generation? What exactly is that party doing to ensure that our young ones do not graduate into unemployment or into paving the streets, selling cheap imitation goods from China and Taiwan under the scotching sun?

Should Nigerians, whether in our collective un-wisdom, or cruel trickery, allow the victory of the PDP come the next elections, then we would truly deserve our servitude, condemned as we would then be, to four more years of the same.

What was true of the PDP in 2011, is true today, 14 years after, as Alhaji Atiku Abubabakar’s purpose for it has not changed one bit.

He sees it as a Northern political party to be used solely for the benefit of the North.

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum yesterday decided to pitch its tent with Sunday Ude-Okoye as the National Secretary of the party, in a twist to the crisis rocking the opposition party.

The forum, rising from an emergency meeting on the crisis in Asaba, Delta State, hinged its decision on the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed Udeh-Okoye, a former National Youth Leader of the PDP, as the party’s authentic National Secretary.

The governors directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to abide by and implement the court’s decision.

But Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who claims to have filed a stay of execution on the Court of Appeal’s decision at the Supreme Court, laughed off the governors’ position when he was contacted last night.

He described their communiqué as nothing to worry about.

A former deputy national chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George, decried the situation in his party, warning that the unresolved internal wrangling could cost it the 2027 elections, while the senator representing Delta North, Ned Nwoko, formally left the PDP yesterday, citing deep divisions and factionalization.

The PDP governors, in a communiqué, also asked the NWC to reschedule the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the party for March 13, 2025.

The meeting was originally slated for February.

The Forum said it “noted with delight the ongoing efforts at resolving the crisis in the National Working Committee (NWC), on the position of the National Secretary, and has reaffirmed its support for the Court of Appeal judgment; consequently, the Forum advised the NWC to set up the machinery for the effective implementation of the court judgment.”

It said having examined “all the notices required by law to be given to validly convoke NEC” the NWC should proceed to organise the NEC meeting on March 13.

On the state of the economy, the PDP governors said the macro-economic policies of the Federal Government have “inflicted hardship and pain on the polity” and asked the federal authorities to “either revisit or rejig its macro-economic policies to ameliorate and stop the hardship/pains that they have inflicted on Nigerians as no meaningful/impactful achievements in the states will be achieved until the harsh policies are addressed.”

They hailed themselves for “pursuing policies and programmes that not only ameliorated the plight of the people but were also aimed at creating the foundation for sustainable development in their various states.”

In attendance at the meeting were Governors Bala A. Mohammed (Bauchi); Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers); Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta); Agbu Kefas (Taraba); Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa); Dauda Lawal (Zamfara); Ademola  Adeleke (Osun); Douye Diri (Bayelsa); Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom);  Peter Mbah (Enugu) and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau).

Oyo State was represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal.

‘I remain PDP National Secretary of PDP’ – Anyanwu

Contacted on the phone last night, Senator Anyanwu insisted that he remained the National Secretary of the PDP regardless of the Asaba communique of the party’s governors.

He said there the position of the governors was nothing to worry about.

“The communique of the PDP Governors’ Forum is nothing to worry about. I remain the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party,” he said.

“Note that under the Constitution of PDP, the Governors’ Forum is not exactly a formal or constitutional organ of the party.

“It is only a pressure group, so their communique is advisory.

“It is very likely that that they did that today (yesterday) to please Governor Peter Mbah who spearheaded this.

“The Constitution of Nigeria and the courts of the land tower above all.

“The Appeal Court gave an order for a stay of execution that is in my favour, and it is clear that as we speak today, in compliance with the law and the order of the court of law, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will not dare deal with any other person in PDP as National Secretary except me.

“As I said earlier, there is nothing in that communique to worry about.”

On December 20, 2024, the Court of Appeal ruled that Ude-Okoye should replace Anyanwu as the PDP national secretary.

It voided a high court judgment which had prevented Anyanwu’s removal, saying the lower court’s verdict was lacking in merit.

The South-East zonal executive committee of the party nominated Udeh-Okoye to replace Anyanwu after he became the PDP gubernatorial candidate in Imo State in 2023.

Only last Wednesday, a fight broke out at the national secretariat of the PDP in Abuja when Udeh-Okoye was not allowed to attend the board of trustees (BoT) meeting.

We must tell Atiku, Wike enough of this nonsense, says Bode George

Chief George, speaking on Arise TV yesterday on the PDP crisis, asked the party to set up a committee to resolve the rift between Anyanwu and Udeh-Okoye over the position of the party’s National Secretary.

He dubbed the situation a public disgrace and a show of shame.

His words: “I have always stated that when you have a little problem and you don’t arrest it on time, it becomes cancerous and affects everybody.

“I believe that at the stage we are, whatever is happening between the two Secretaries—Anyanwu and the other former National Youth Leader of the party—is a reflection of the lackluster approach to solving this problem.

“I was disgusted and ashamed that this kind of crisis would get to a crescendo where our public image is being eroded. It was a show of shame and very disgraceful.

“My take is this: the contentious matter is that the former youth leader went to the Court of Appeal, which gave him judgment that he was right to take over the Office of the National Secretary, and Anyanwu went to another court that ordered the status quo to be maintained.

“It looks depressing and disgusting when you consider that a party, which is like an Iroko tree, is being decimated because of personal ambition. It bothers some of us who have been part of the party since 1998.

“Resolving this crisis at the midpoint doesn’t make any political sense. Let us set up a committee to conduct an in-depth analysis of what happened.

“All sides of the divide are making us very angry. People are starting to say that our party is dead. But we say no, we can disagree without being disagreeable.

“I will remain consistent in my argument that we must go to the root of this madness so that it will never repeat itself.

“We have to set up a proper committee to resolve the mess from that convention. We must avoid this dirty public image.”

He said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike should stop ‘this nonsense’, a reference to the lingering face-off between the two party stalwarts.

He said party members should stop blaming the ruling All Progressives Congress for the crisis.

“Throwing tantrums and accusing APC, we are just trying to undermine the issue. We must sit down, all sides of the divides.

“Both Atiku and Wike have committed hara-kiri, and we must be bold enough to tell them enough of this nonsense,” George said.

George, who also addressed newsmen at his ikoyi, Lagos residence, warned that the 2027 elections would be disastrous for the PDP unless it unites and wields the big stick on characters destroying it.

“We’ve found ourselves in our current situation due to a self-inflicted crisis. We should bury our individual ambition now and not allow the PDP to crumble,” he said.

“Elders of the party should tell those funny characters to calm down.

“Unless we are united, with equity, fairness and justice being the pedestal for any political decision taken, this party will be heading to disaster in 2027.

“What happened on Wednesday was horrendous, terrible and dreadful.

“We are all aware that the National Secretariat of our party in Abuja is sacred. The premises must be respected by all members and non-members.

“It is sacrilegious that thugs were hired to enter the premises to unleash mayhem, disrupting the 79th Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting.

“If that could happen, then what do you think those who sponsored the thugs will do during National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings?

“I have consistently stated that those with a belligerent attitude, if they are not ready to repent, should be shown the way out.

“As the largest party in Africa, PDP should not be turned into an ‘Agbero’ party by any member with an inordinate ambition. We have rules and regulations that govern our party.”

    Apugo: How Wednesday’s fracas started

A party stalwart from the South East, Chukwudi Apugo, said yesterday that Udeh-Okoye should not have been invited to the Wednesday’s Board of Trustees’ (BoT’s) meeting.

He said it was wrong of BoT chairman Adolphus Wabara to have listed Udeh-Okoye as national secretary on the day.

“At what stage did it occur to him (Wabara) to invite Sunday Ude-Okoye who is not a member of the Board of Trustees of the party?” Apugo asked.

“If Anyanwu was recognised and invited to the meeting as a serving National Secretary of the Party, what then was the motive of Wabara in inviting Sunday Udeh-Okoye in the same capacity as a serving National Secretary?”

Apugo said that all parties should maintain the status quo ante bellum as directed till the matter is finally determined by the court, and any action contrary to that position is reprehensible and should be properly sanctioned.

    Nwoko formally dumps party

Senator Nwoko, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of PDP Ward 8 in Aniocha North LGA, Nwoko blamed deep divisions and factionalization, which he said made it difficult to foster unity and advance the collective interests of the people.

He said party functionaries went to the lowest level on Wednesday by engaging in physical combat due to irreconcilable differences.

Nwoko expressed appreciation to PDP for providing him a platform to contest the 2022/2023 senatorial election, which afforded him the opportunity to directly engage with the people of Delta North and present his vision for a brighter future.

He stated that during his campaign he made promises to his constituents, commitments he took seriously, but regretted that the current structure of the party in the state had not been conducive to realising his promises.

He said after careful consideration, he had come to the conclusion that stepping away from the party was necessary for him to fulfill his obligations to the people.

He assured party faithful and his constituents of his unwavering dedication to statesmanship, unity and advancement of Delta North, stressing that his decision was rooted in the best interest of his constituents.

He added he would remain committed to the progress and prosperity of the state and the nation.

Nwoko thanked the PDP leadership and members for their support and wished the party continued success in its endeavors.

With Nwoko’s exit, PDP currently has no senator in the state.

You’ve lost direction, stop blaming Tinubu for your woes, LP tells PDP, Atiku

The opposition Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure, has advised the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to stop blaming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the intractable crisis plaguing the PDP, saying it is a self – inflicted woe.

The Labour Party also asked the PDP to recuse itself from contesting or presenting any candidate for the country’s next presidential election in 2027, declaring that the hitherto largest political party in Africa has lost both “direction and focus.”

Emphasising the alleged leadership crisis rocking the party, the fight that erupted at its headquarters in Abuja during a meeting of the party’s board of trustees (BoT) as both Samuel Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye continued to lay claim to the position of the National Secretary, and allegation by Atiku Abubakar, that the opposition leaders were paid N50million each by the government at the centre to undermine democracy, the LP submitted that the umbrella party can no longer be expected to provide the much-desired leadership role in the country.

In a statement on Friday by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, the LP said if the PDP had not been able to put its house in order and work in unity since losing power in 2015 to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), it will also be quite difficult for it to reclaim power in 2027, let alone summoning the requisite direction, focus and organisation to manage the affairs of Nigeria.

Arabambi added that given the precarious situation of the opposition PDP today, it would  be a deft move if the once ruling political party in Nigeria should heed the wise counsel, recuse itself from the next presidential election and join forces with the Labour Party and Mr Peter Obi to make the union formidable enough to wrest power from the APC in 2027.

The LP Publicity Secretary said the advice became necessary and timely as the nation inches closer to another general elections season so as to avert a repeat of what happened in 2023, when the PDP and LP went to the presidential election separately and lost  to the APC, instead of joining hands together as a single entity to upstage the ruling party.

He expressed the confidence that with the over six million votes garnered by the LP in 2023, there is hope in the horizon that the party would pull winning votes in 2027 and more victory votes if the PDP aligned with LP ahead of the next presidential election.

“PDP is in a serious leadership crisis. They have not been able to put their house in order and how can they manage the affairs of the country? PDP should recuse itself from participating in the 2027 presidential election and support the Labour Party to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress, APC.

“We don’t want what happened in 2023 to repeat itself in 2027 when the PDP and LP went separate ways to contest in that election and divided their votes. If they had worked together as one their combined votes would have defeated the APC,” Arabambi stated.

JUST IN: Senator Ned Nwoko dumps PDP, set to join APC

Senator representing Delta North, Prince Ned Nwoko, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform on which he was elected to the Senate in 2023.

In a letter dated January 30, 2025, and addressed to his Ward 8 chairman in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nwoko cited various reasons for his decision to leave the party.

A copy of the letter was made available to our correspondent yesterday by his media team, confirming his departure from the PDP.

The letter: “I write to formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party I have proudly served as a foundation member since 1999

“My decision to resign is first and foremost due to the deep divisions and

factionalisation within the party. This fragmentation has made it increasingly difficult to foster unity and advance the collective interests of our people.

“Just this week, precisely on the 29th of January, the top party functions degenerated to the lowest levels by physically fighting themselves arising from the stated factions, which have become irreconcilable.

“I also deeply appreciate the platform the PDP provided me to contest the 2022/2023 senatorial election.  It was an opportunity that allowed me to engage directly with the people of my constituency and present my vision for a brighter future.

    “However, during my campaign, I made solemn and actionable promises to my constituents commitment to take seriously, regrettably, the current structure of the party in our state has not been conducive to realizing these promises. After careful consideration. I have come to the conclusion that stepping away from the party is necessary to fulfill my obligations to my people;

“While I bid farewell to my membership in the PDP, I assure all party members and my constituents of my unwavering dedication to statesmanship” the letter read

Enugu PDP appeals to LP guber candidate Edeoga to return to party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has urged Chijioke Edeoga, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, to return to the ruling party and contribute to its progress.

The appeal was made on Friday by the state chairman of the PDP, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, during a visit to Edeoga’s residence in Enugu, accompanied by key officials of the state executive committee.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Dr. Chukwunweike emphasized the party’s desire to rebuild and strengthen its political structure in the state.

“Ever since I assumed office as the state chairman of the PDP in Enugu, we have been strategizing on how to make the party formidable once again,” he stated.

The PDP leadership expressed confidence that Edeoga’s return would bolster the party’s influence and enhance its efforts to serve the people of Enugu State effectively.

“PDP used to be the only party in Enugu State l. But in the last election, something happened that things didn’t go the way they used to go.

“When I came on board, I discussed with the governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, that we must do everything possible to get all our people back on track. We must do everything possible to see that Enugu State becomes 100 percent PDP once again the way it used to be.

“We took the decision to consult with some of our very key people who have been PDP all along. Number one on the list is the person we’re in his residence, Chijioke Edeoga.

“Edeoga has gone to the House of Representatives under PDP. During our discussion, he told me plainly that he owes a lot to PDP. He’s become a lot because of PDP. He’s been in the state executive council of Enugu State courtesy of the PDP and a lot of other things.

“So, it was painful to me to come and be acting as the PDP chairman without someone like him being in PDP.

“The governor approved that I should go and talk to him and beg him to come back to PDP because he (the governor) knows that he (Edeoga) is a force to reckon with in Enugu State politics.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions before now. Today, we, myself and key members of the executive of the PDP in Enugu State, have come to consult with him, and he’s okay with our visit. He’s very satisfied with our visit.

“I believe, from what he told us, that we are going to have him back in the party. The only thing is that being somebody who is not standing alone, who has people who are his team members and companions, he feels that it is right that he also consults with them before coming to give us the expected verdict.

“It might not cause him anything (to make his stand known) but it doesn’t augur well for his personality to just tell us, ‘Let’s go back to PDP’. But, naturally, as a man of honour and integrity, and as a general who controls people, he needs to consult with his people to give us his final expected verdict, which I believe will not be in a long time so that as the battle is beginning to prepare now, we will all go into the battlefield united as one family, which we have always been.

“We know that Enugu State under Dr Peter Mbah will eventually become what PDP used to be. He’s asked us to extend his greetings to the governor. He’s asked us to tell the governor that he has seen the good works.

“We’re happy this our visit has been very successful. I believe that when next we call you will be for him to now tell you the expected response”, Chukwunweike said.

Edeoga, in his response, thanked the leadership of the PDP Enugu State for looking for him and promised to give them a response anytime soon.

He said: “You heard the chairman. They want me to come back to PDP and I told them that I would consult widely because I’m a product of several men and women of goodwill. I will have to take back the message from the chairman and his team, whom I have enormous respect for. It is un-Igbo to hear such a request and respond immediately. I’m going to take it home and as early as possible, get back to the chairman”.

PDP crisis: Personal ambition decimating our party, says George

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, has expressed concern over the internal crisis within the party, stating that personal ambitions are damaging its prospects.

Speaking on Arise TV, George called for the establishment of a committee to resolve the ongoing rift between Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye over the position of PDP’s National Secretary.

He described the situation as a public disgrace and a show of shame.

His comments come in response to the altercation between Ude-Okoye and supporters of Anyanwu during the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

The dispute began when Anyanwu left his position to contest the Imo State governorship election, which he lost.

In his absence, the party endorsed Ude-Okoye as his replacement. However, upon returning, Anyanwu opposed the decision and took legal action.

Reacting to the fight, George said: “I have always stated that when you have a little problem and you don’t arrest it on time, it becomes cancerous and affects everybody. I believe that at the stage we are, whatever is happening between the two Secretaries—Anyanwu and the other former National Youth Leader of the party—is a reflection of the lacklustre approach to solving this problem.

It looks depressing and disgusting when you consider that a party, which is like an Iroko tree, is being decimated because of personal ambition. It bothers some of us who have been part of the party since 1998.

“Resolving this crisis at the midpoint doesn’t make any political sense. Let us set up a committee to conduct an in-depth analysis of what happened. All sides of the divide are making us very angry. People are starting to say that our party is dead, but we say no, we can disagree without being disagreeable.

“I will remain consistent in my argument that we must go to the root of this madness so that it will never repeat itself. We have to set up a proper committee to resolve the mess from that convention. We must avoid this dirty public image.”
