The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum says the party remains a formidable force on the political landscape of Nigeria.
Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Chairman of the forum stated this at the end of its meeting on Saturday in Jos.
Mohammed said that the party would soon overcome all its challenges, adding that the ‘minor setbacks’ would soon be over.
He called on lovers of PDP and Nigerians in general not to lose hope in the party.
“The forum notes the concerns of Nigerians, the founding fathers, elders and members of our great party about the seeming divisions within its rank and file.
“The forum, however, wishes to state categorically that it remains resolute in its determination to ensure unity and cohesion within the party.
“This is a party that Nigerians have come to trust as the best platform to provide democratic governance to all; it is still the party to beat,” he said.
The chairman also called on the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to convey a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC), as part of measures to address its current wranglings.
He commended members of the National Assembly elected under the platform of the party for their contributions toward the growth of democracy.
Mohammed, however, called on the leadership of the assembly to critically interrogate all bills to ensure fairness, equity, national balance and even development.
The governor, who noted with deep concern the current economic crisis in the country, called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently review his administration’s macro-economic and fiscal policies to address the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.
While commending Gov. Caleb Mutfwang for hosting his colleagues in Plateau, Mohammed, however, commiserated with the government and people of the state over the recent fire outbreak at a wood market.
As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepares for its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on November 28, Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum chaired a crucial meeting with PDP state chairmen from across the 36 states on Wednesday in Abuja.
During the meeting, held at the party’s national headquarters in Wadata Plaza, Damagum and the state chairmen dismissed claims of internal tension or threats to his leadership.
In separate interviews, the chairmen, who also serve as members of the NEC under the PDP Constitution, expressed unanimous support for Damagum.
Despite calls from some party members, including National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan, for Damagum’s replacement over alleged poor leadership and recent electoral defeats in Edo and Ondo states, the state chairmen maintained there was no cause for concern.
Damagum, appearing confident and composed, described the meeting as a routine familiarization visit, contrary to the speculation of discord circulating on social media.
The state chairmen echoed his sentiments, emphasizing their collective resolve to maintain unity ahead of the NEC meeting.
Newly elected state chairmen of the PDP, along with incumbent chairmen from all thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory, convened with members of the PDP National Executive Council (NEC) led by Ambassador Damagum.
Damagum emphasized that the state chairmen’s visit was primarily a familiarization tour, rather than the conflict and threats being circulated on social media.
Damagum said: “My state chairmen are my commander in the States, this is not an unusual meeting, we’ve had this kind of meeting before; this is not the first time and for the records, I want to make it very clear that this meeting was to interact with the state chairmen.
“You can see from the introduction, that more than half of the state chairmen here are brand new and it is for us to know ourselves and also discuss other matters such as the coming Zonal Congresses; it has nothing to do, like has been insinuated in the social media, about NEC or something of that nature and I had no prior meeting with any of the state chairmen before we met in this hall.
“Issues of NEC are entirely within the purview of NWC and the chairman, so we are not calling the chairmen here to maybe insinuate anything; so, just for the records, it is a normal interactive session to welcome the new chairmen that have just joined us and also to know ourselves and to further discuss the on-going plans for Zonal Congresses,” Damagum stated.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues after the meeting on Wednesday evening, Chief Austin Nwachukwu, the Imo State PDP Chairman who is also the Interim Chairman of the PDP State Chairmen’s Forum told reporters that there is no tension, adding that they also found no need to declare a vote of confidence in Ambassador Damagum because all is well with the party’s leadership.
Nwachukwu said: “The meeting is simply to familiarize ourselves with the National Working Committee; recall that a few months back, a lot of state congresses were held from wards, local government to the state and the NWC deemed it feet to gather all of us in Abuja to enable us know each other
“We also discussed zonal congresses, the forms are out and those people who feel like contesting can go through their zonal offices to purchase the forms; we harped on unity among members of the party and across the board while nothing about the coming PDP NEC meeting or a vote of confidence was discussed.
“We want to clear that erroneous impression that the fortunes of the party is diminishing each day, it is not; it is looking stronger into the new dispensation and what you may call a crisis in the party is just cosmetic,” Nwachukwu said, who blamed the PDP’s recent electoral losses on the tactics of the ruling party rather than allegations of poor leadership being attributed to Ambassador Umar Damagum.
A former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbondiyan, has warned that the party will continue its losing streak and face potential collapse under the leadership of its acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, if he is not urgently replaced.
Ologbondiyan’s remarks signal the possible resurgence of internal blame games and renewed tensions within the PDP, which had temporarily subsided during preparations for the governorship campaign launch in Ondo State.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, following a meeting with members of a PDP support group in Abuja, Ologbondiyan stressed that the party’s failure in the Ondo State gubernatorial election reflects a troubling trend. He called for Damagum’s replacement before the end of November to prevent further setbacks.
“Ambassador Umar Ilyasu Damagum, will extinguish life out of the PDP unless the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for November 28 elects a substantive National Chairman from the North Central as directed by Section 47 (6) of the party’s Constitution (2017 Amendment),” he stated.
Expressing concern at the party’s loss in Saturday’s Ondo state governorship election, Ologbondiyan insisted that if a substantive national chairman is not restored for the party, successive off-season elections scheduled to take place in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun may suffer the fate of Kogi, Imo and Ondo states.
“It is reprehensible that the acting national chairmanis supervising the dishevelling of the party; Ambassador . Damagun has the least of interest in working for the suçcess of the party in any election,” he further noted.
Recalling the allegation against Damagum in the public space in which he was alleged to have met with President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in London, Ologbondiyan challenged the embattled Acting National Chairman to speak up and make a denial if it is untrue.
“How can the head of the leading opposition party be accused of nicodemusly meeting with the President of the ruling government, and he would have no response to provide?” he queried.
Ologbondiyan urged PDP leaders to rescue the PDP from the stranglehold of Amb. Damagum and his backers, if the party must be revitalised to perform optimally as opposition political party.
Stunned by its defeat in the Ondo State gubernatorial election after confidently predicting victory, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the poll as a sham.
In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday night, the PDP’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed deep disappointment over the election.
He claimed that some supporters of the party, as well as those of other parties, allegedly engaged in voter inducement by distributing money on election day.
“The Peoples Democratic Party and indeed all lovers of democracy in Nigeria and across the world have just witnessed the worst election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The November 16, 2024 Governorship election in Ondo State runs short of all expectations and requirements of a free, fair and credible election as it witnessed the height of electoral swindle, deceit and manipulation by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“This election witnessed widespread election merchandising, monetization and barefaced vote buying by the APC and its apparatus in government to suppress the genuine aspiration of the people.
“This devious practice by the APC was rampant and pervasive because the APC have utterly impoverished Nigerians and turned poverty into a weapon of mass subjugation which enabled it to manipulate the election and its outcome,” Olorunagba stated.
Pointing out that PDP is currently undertaking a thorough review of the entire poll, Ologunagba who is PDP’s topmost official from Ondo State ignored allegations of his party’s involvement in attempts to influence voters with monetary inducement on election day and argued for the need to stop APC.
“We call the attention of all Nigerians and the International Community to this reprehensible practice by the APC as widely witnessed in the November 16, 2024 Governorship election in Ondo State and we demand that a serious action be taken to stem such if Nigeria’s democracy must survive.
“In the meantime, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP will be having a more detailed review of the election and its outcome and take appropriate action in the defence of our Democracy,” Ologunagba stated.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained why its candidate, Agboola Ajayi, is yet to speak on the outcome of last Saturday’s governorship election.
It said it would communicate the official reaction of the leadership of the PDP and the candidate on Monday, November 18.
Spokesman of the party, Kennedy Peretei, in a statement, said, “This is to enable us time to look at the results announced by INEC today and interface appropriately with our Party Agents and leaders across the State.”
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, and the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) engaged in a heated exchange on Sunday, November 17, over the construction of the 7.5-kilometer Temboga Road in Benin City.
Chris Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee and former Commissioner for Communication and Orientation under Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration, sparked the disagreement with an online statement.
In the statement, Nehikhare accused Governor Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to claim credit for the construction of the strategic road and other projects in Edo State, which he asserted were “initiated and completed” under Obaseki’s leadership.
Nehikhare said: “The claim by Okpebholo that his government was flagging off construction of the 7.5km Temboga Road, among others in the state, was disingenuous and misleading, as the road (Temboga) has already been constructed by the immediate past government of Obaseki.
“The governor-select should desist from his mendacious antics of rewriting the story of the performance of the Obaseki-led government, by claiming credit for his (Obaseki’s) projects, but rather focus on delivering his campaign promises, if any, by initiating projects that reflect his administration’s vision, if any, for the state.
“It is unfortunate that Senator Okpebholo, the governor-select and his administration are kicking off on a very bad footing, and have resorted to deceiving the people of Edo State with false claims of initiating projects that have already been completed by the government of his predecessor, Obaseki.
“One of the projects is the 7.5km Temboga Road, which was initiated and constructed by the Obaseki-led government. This is utterly preposterous and condemnable. We urge the governor-select and his administration to desist from such ignoble acts forthwith. Edo people deserve better than disingenuity and deceit.
“Rather than engaging in these mendacious antics to rewrite the performance records of Governor Obaseki’s administration, we call on Senator Okpebholo to concentrate on delivering his campaign promises to Edo people, by initiating and executing his own projects that align with his administration’s vision for Edo State, if really they have any plans or developmental agenda for the state.”
Edo governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, however, declared that Nehikhare, whom he described as a retired politician and idle factional publicity secretary of the depleted PDP caretaker committee in Edo, had again exposed one of the many failures of the Obaseki-led administration.
He said: “We understand that the factional chapter of the depleted PDP is in a hurry to redeem itself. The PDP-led administration, for over one year, failed to complete a mere 7.5km of road (Temboga).
“The party (PDP) is pained that Governor Okpebholo is in a hurry to complete some projects abandoned or poorly done by the Obaseki’s administration.
“Governor Okpebholo will not be distracted by retired politicians, who are still chasing clouts and suffering from post-election traumatic disorder.”
Itua also assured that Okpebholo would continue to work for the Edo people, provide critical infrastructure, and create economic opportunities for everyone.
Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has been declared winner in 13 out of 18 local government areas.
Aiyedatiwa won in Ifedore, Akoko Northwest, Akoko Northeast, Owo, Ose, Akoko Southeast, Akoko Southwest, Idanre, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, Ondo East, Ondo West and Irele.
He is leading with a wide margin.

PDP Gov candidate, Ajayi wins polling unit

The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Agboola Ajayi has been declared the winner of his polling unit.
Agboola, who voted at his at Apoi Ward II, Unit 004 in Kiribo, Ese Odo council area, polled 194 votes to defeat his main rival, Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress who scored 003 votes.
Agboola with wife arrived at the polling booth at around 10:36 am and permitted to vote before others who were in the queue.
The couple was accredited around, 10: 45am for voting chatted briefly with voters before leaving the polling unit in a black Jeep.
Speaking shortly after casting his vote, Agboola expressed displeasure over the conduct of the excercise, alleging gross irregularities in the ongoing governorship poll.
He accused the Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agencies of compromising the election in favour of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
Agboola said that the preliminary report from across the 16 local government area has shown that the election so far was far below the standard, asking the INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu to resign for conducting the most corrupt election in Nigeria’s political history.
He described the exercise as not only a sham but also synchronized attempt to murder democratic process, alleging that the stronghold of PDP chieftains were militarised to intimidate the voters from exercising their franchise.

BREAKING: PDP running mate delivers polling unit

The candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the ongoing governorship election in Ondo State, Hon. Festus Akingbaso, has delivered his Polling Unit 8, Ward 2, Alade Okun, Alade-Idanre for his principal, Agboola Ajayi.
Akingbaso delivered the unit with a landslide victory, scoring 187 votes to the All Progressives Congress (APC) 46 votes.
The Labour Party (LP), the Action Alliance (AA) and the PLP got one vote each at the unit.
The unit’s votes were counted amid fears that the community was surrounded by hoodlums reportedly determined to carry the ballot box away.
It took the intervention of armed roving policemen who fired several shits in the air to scare the alleged hoodlums away.
The patrolling policemen were prevailed upon to remain at the unit throughout the sorting and collation of votes.
APC Deputy Gov candidate Adelami wins polling unit

The Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ondo election Olayide Adelami has won his polling unit.
His party polled 209 votes to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which polled 11 votes.
Adelami’s voted at Unit 16, Igboroko 2, Ward 03, Ahmadiya Grammar School, Isley, Owo. He voted by 9:40am.
The Deputy Governor commended the exercise, saying everything went smoothly, particularly in his polling unit.
He expressed confidence his party would coast to victory having campaigned vigorously and received well across the 18 local governments in the state.
Total registered voters in Adelami’s unit was 850.

He said: “If INEC cannot successfully organize election in just one state, then you must know that we are running into anarchy in Nigeria.
“I have been getting reports across the state and it is same, including me , I am a victim here in my unit and I want to say it is deliberate on the part of the REC and the INEC and don’t forget we have said earlier that we don’t trust Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola who is the REC ; she can’t be fair.
“The system is compromised and there are complaints everywhere in the state including vote-buying , BVAS not working and don’t forget the machine is a rigging tools for them. It is a very shameful exercise and I think Nigerians should just call on INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, if he can’t do the job, he should honorably resign because the system is totally compromised, this is sad.
“Under Professor Attahiru Jega as INEC chairman, our electoral process was getting to that international standard but Professor Yakubu has drawn us back , this is sad and Nigerians are not happy.”
On the security situation, the PDP candidate said: ” From my community here it is peaceful but accused the military operatives deployment more men to his area and I would take it up with the brigade commander. They can’t be intimidating the voters.How do you station seven to 10 armed soldiers; we are not at war here !
“On the voters turn out, despite the intimidation, people were willing to vote because they are frustrated already with things in the state and the country.”
He expressed displeasure over the delay he experienced before he could vote due to BVAS malfunction, saying ” The system is not perfect, things are not working and it took more than 10 minutes before the BVAS could accredit me”.

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a suspected vote buyer in the Ondo governorship election.
The suspect was reportedly captured with two bags of money suspected to be for the inducement of voters in the election.

Agboola arrived at his polling unit located in Ese Odo Local Government Area of the state around 10:36am with wife to cast his vote.
The former Deputy Governor clad in a blue caftan was warmly received at the polling unit amid cheers by his teeming supporters.
Almost two hours after commencement of voting, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Agboola Ajayi is yet to cast his vote.
Agboola is expected to vote at his Apoi II, Unit 004, RCM at Idimado quarters Kiribo, Ese Odo local government area of Ondo state.
As of 10:16 am, the PDP candidate is yet to arrive his polling unit to vote.
One of his security aides said Agboola is sleeping as he came in around 6am.
But an impeccable source close to the PDP flag bearer told our correspondent that Agboola was on his way preparing to leave to cast his vote.
“Very soon, Agbo will be on his way to cast his vote,” he said.
Agboola’s kinsmen are at the unit waiting for the PDP governorship candidate’s arrival.

Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has expressed optimism that he would win the ongoing governorship election because he performed well in the last 10 months.
Aiyedatiwa, who spoke after he voted at Unit 5 Ward 4 Obenla community, said he was the only candidate that campaigned across the State.
He said the people listened to him and he expected them to display the love they showed during the campaigns with their votes.
According to him: “I am here at Obela community at Unit 05. It has been calm and peaceful. The turnout is encouraging. I expect same situation at other locations. I believe it should be peaceful in other locations. The people will comport themselves.
“We are peaceful in Ondo. We have been having our election in a peaceful environment. The citizens are law-abiding. I believe the election will be peaceful and credible.
“I urged the people to go out and vote. They should go out and vote. I believe with what we have done in the last 10 months, the voters know who they want.
” I am at an advantage to win because of the work I have done in the last 10 months. I was the only candidate that covered the entire state. I felt the people, I listened to them and the people were excited at my appearance. I believed they will translate the love to vote today.”

Voting is underway at the polling unit of the governorship candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Agboola Ajayi in Apoi Ward II, Unit 004, RCM, Idumado quarters Kiribo, Ese Odo council area of Ondo State.
Accreditation and voting started at 8:05am amid heavy security presence in the polling unit.
Officials of the Department of State Security Services, Nigeria Police Force, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence were seen at the polling unit to ensure a violence-free election.
Announcing the commencement of the exercise, the INEC Presiding Officer for the unit said the voting would end by 2:30 pm.
She read out the voting process in line with the electoral guidelines.
She also displayed the BVAS and empty ballot box while urging voters to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations.
The INEC officials arrived at the polling unit at 7:30 am.

Voting has commenced early in may parts of the ancient town of Idanre, the headquarters of Idanre Local Government Area.
INEC ad-hoc staff got to their units ahead of the commencement of the exercise.

INEC begins distribution of sensitive materials for Ondo poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun distribution of sensitive materials to the 18 local government areas.
Stakeholders from security agencies, political parties representatives and Civil Society Organizations were at the Akure branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) to monitor the distribution.
The materials were first inspected to ensure they were not tampered with before being distributed.
The Ekiti state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has adopted a consensus arrangement for its local and ward congresses in the state.
The state chairman of the PDP caretaker committee, Dare Adeleke said that party stakeholders had agreed to produce a unity list after a wide consultation with PDP members across the 16 council areas of the state.
Adeleke who stated this Friday during the party’s stakeholders meeting held in Ado Ekiti, said the party decision does not stop individuals from testing their popularity on the field.
The caretaker chairman stated that the consensus arrangements were in the best interest of the party, saying such would ensure that the party had a rancor-free congresses to elect party executives at both the ward and local levels.
Adeleke appealed to PDP leaders and members to forge a united front by not allowing individual ambition to divide their ranks, noting that “we must be ready to sacrifice anything for the progress and unity of the party.”
He noted that the ruling All Progressives Congress-led government in the state had failed Ekiti people, adding that there was a need for PDP members to close ranks irrespective of faction they belonged to in the past so the party could rescue the people.
He said, “We must be ready to sacrifice anything for the progress and unity of the party. Some of our leaders must be ready and prepared to shift their stands on certain critical issues. A little to the left, a little to the right. We must bear in mind that we can’t have it all. Nobody can have it all, but in the end, we will achieve a robust party that can reclaim the government house for us.
“It is on this note that we deemed it fit to appeal to all the leaders to work together irrespective of groups or factions they belong to in the past. We must harmonise our positions, especially on ward, local, and state excos, so that we can have a rancour free congress.”
Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of Mr Olasoji Jr. Adagunodo Oluwatukesi as special adviser for regional integration.
The governor also approved the appointment of Mr Salawu Adisa (Okotolaye) as Special Assistant Culture III.
These were contained in a letter signed by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi.
The new Special Adviser on Regional Integration is the son of the late Hon. Olasoji Adagunodo Oluwatukesi, the late former PDP National Vice Chairman (Southwest).
According to the letter, the appointments are with immediate effect.
While congratulating the new appointees, the governor counseled them to see their appointment as a call to service.
There is heavy security presence in Akure, the Ondo State capital and other adjoining towns as electorates prepare to elect a new Governor.
The choices before Ondo electorates are Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) and Hon Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).
Out of 2,053,061 registered voters in the State, a total of 1,793,914 electorates who collected their Permanent Voter Cards are expected to cast their votes on Saturday.
This was unlike in the 2020 governorship election when there were 1,478,460 eligible voters in Ondo State.
Checks showed that a total of 58,708 new voters were registered in Ondo State while 3,132 voters transferred their registration into and within Ondo State, while 123 voters transferred their registration within and out of Ondo State.
Sensitive materials for the conduct of the election were distributed to the local government areas under heavy security and closely monitored by party agents.
This is the first election in Ondo State where minimal violence was recorded ahead of the election unlike in previous elections.
There were no reported cases of attack on billboards or clash of supporters during campaigns. It was at Idanre, Idanre Local Government Area, that seven members of the opposition PDP were hospitalised after they were reportedly attacked by suspected political thugs.
To foster any violence during the election, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbedokun deployed 22, 239 policemen to be supported by 8,500 personnel from the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Correctional Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Speaking on the security deployment, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abiodun Alabi, said the police were prepared to provide level playing ground for all contesting candidates irrespective of party affiliation or status
as well ensured secured environment for successful and peaceful conduct of elections throughout the state.
Alabi said there would be provision of adequate security for election officials and materials from all ”take-off” points to their respective destinations.
He said the police would “Ensure that all participants and other citizens comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act of 2020 as amended and other statute laws of the Federation.
“We will render all necessary assistance to INEC officials to facilitate the discharge of their responsibilities and provide adequate contingency plans to contain any crisis that may directly or indirectly arise before, during or after the conduct of the election.
Alabi said all arrested electoral offenders would be prosecuted accordingly.
