Ondo 2024: PDP, APC clash on peace accord violation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) are at each others’ throat on peace accord violation.

While the PDP alleged that APC members in Idanre unleashed terror on prominent PDP members, injuring at least seven people who remain critically injured at the State General Hospital in Akure, the state capital, the APC countered, saying the opposition party was out to smear the good image of the ruling party.

The Chairman of the PDP Campaign Council, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, disclosed this during a press briefing in Akure, stating that no arrests have been made while the perpetrators remain at large.

Olafeso claimed that the attack by thugs loyal to the APC in Idanre injured seven PDP members, including a party leader in the area, Otunba Olowoniyi Akinlemimu.

He reported that Akinlemimu, who was seriously injured, remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the State Specialists Hospital in Akure, while others are still receiving treatment after bullets were removed from their bodies.

Olafeso also raised an alarm over an alleged plan by a top APC member to mobilize paramilitary personnel to influence the election in favor of the Condemning any attempts by the ruling APC to undermine a peaceful election, Olafeso stated that the PDP would resist any violation of the peace accord signed by all parties.

In response, the APC Director of Publicity, Steve Otaloro, denied the allegations regarding threats to a peaceful election, asserting that the party is focused on winning the election.

In a statement, Otaloro said, “The APC rejects any act of violence, especially in an election we are poised to win, given the overwhelming support our candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has received.

“The allegation that an APC member engaged in thuggery to attack PDP members in Idanre is a fabricated story intended to tarnish our party’s image.

“We also deny any involvement of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in mobilizing officers from the Nigeria Immigration Service, Customs, and Nigeria Correctional Service for the Ondo election. These agencies are not legally mandated to participate in election matters.

“The APC remains committed to a free, fair, and credible election. We urge the PDP to do the same and respect the democratic process. The people of Ondo State deserve better than baseless allegations and fear-mongering.

Wike’s aide to Atiku: forget 2027 PDP presidential ticket

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to erase the thought of getting the 2027 presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike said the ticket will no longer be available to be wasted by serial betrayers suffering the consequences of their past sins against the party and its members.

The Minister’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA), on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, who insisted that Atiku should perish the thought of contesting the 2027 presidential election as candidate of the PDP, in a statement on Thursday said: “His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and those urging him on for their personal benefits should let the PDP breathe.”

Wike had said during a live media parley in his office in Abuja on Wednesday that there will be no chance for Atiku, who was the 2023 presidential candidate of the PDP to secure the party’s ticket in 2027.

Reacting through his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku alluded to his defeat of Wike to pick the 2023 PDP presidential ticket as well as the former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal to emerge as the candidate in 2019.

However, Olayinka, who described Atiku’s celebration of his narrow defeat of Wike in the 2022 PDP primary as funny and childish, said: “It is like Arsenal fans jumping to the rooftop to celebrate the club’s narrow defeat of Super Falcons”.

He said: “That Atiku is venerating himself for contesting PDP ticket with Wike and Tambuwal, people who were just a little above 25 as at 1993, when he contested the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential primary and came third, is the more reason he needs to go home and rest and stop acting like the proverbial cock that failed to realize that it is now elderly”.

Describing Atiku as not destined to be President of Nigeria, Olayinka said: “It is obvious that he (Atiku) is paying the price of betraying the PDP in 2003, 2007 and 2014. If not, the same presidency he has contested twice and lost, could have been his to just pick if he had avoided being inordinately ambitious while he was Vice President.

“It was this desperation that made him contest for president as candidate of Action Congress in 2007, while still serving as Vice President, elected under the platform of the PDP. A serving Vice President joining others to form another party and contesting as candidate of the new party against his own party. That’s Alhaji Atiku Abubakar!

“Most importantly, Atiku’s conscience will continue to prick him on his roles in Lagos in 2023, and I am sure that even his apology to PDP members in 2018 can never remove from his body, that garment of betrayal.

“Therefore, it is again being sounded to his ears and those of the people lying to him that he is the only one who can win the presidency for the PDP that the ticket of the party will not be for someone like him, who will lose election and run to Dubai, only to come back two years to another election.”

PDP shuts down Akure highway again for Ondo polls

The ever-busy Oba Adesida -Oyemekun highway in Akure, the Ondo State capital, was under lockdown for several hours as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its final campaign rally on the highway.

It was the second time the PDP would be holding its rally on the highway following alleged refusal by the Ondo State government to allow it use the Democracy Park for its rally.

There was heavy vehicular traffic occasioned by the blockade.

Among those present were chairman of the National Campaign Council of the PDP Governorship Ondo 2024, Governor Ademola Adeleke, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Governor Diri Duoye of Bayelsa, Governor Caleb  Muftwang of Plateau, Sen. Abiodun Olukemi and Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde.

Speakers at the rally urged PDP supporters to ensure they storm collation centres to protect their votes.

They urged PDP members to be vigilance on Saturday and follow the results until the winner is announced.

A two-time former governorship candidate of the PDP, Eyitayo Jegede,
said the PDP would win the polls.

The presence of Jegede ended speculations that he was not in support of Ajayi’s candidacy.

He said the APC was on their way out of power in the state.

Diri mobilised Ijaws in the state for Ajayi.

According to him: “Oppressors will never leave unless you decide to free yourself. It is the people that matters in this election . Power belong to the people.

“Defend your vote. Follow your vote. When the people are strong there is no power that can bring them down. Take over the collation centres in your numbers.

“Let us not hear we won but we were rigged out. Somebody can only rig where he is more popular.”

Nollywood Actress, Rita Orji, urged Ondo electorates to colelct monwy from the APC and vote for the PDP.

“By tonight, they will start crediting your account, collect the money. Reclaim your state.”

Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Umar Damangum, urged the crowd not to yield  to intimidation but to ensure they vote and defend their votes to the final collation centre.

“When the PDP was in the control of government in the state, a lot of achievements were recorded. You saw roads, you saw schools.

Ondo polls: PDP rejects more INEC staff

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has kicked against some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be involved in this Saturday’s governorship election.

It had protested severally calling for the removal of Mrs. Babalola Oluwatoyin as Resident Electoral Commissioner to oversee the polls.

Chairman of the PDP Campaign Council, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, who spoke at a press briefing in Akure, said INEC’s staff “notorious for manipulating election in the ICT should not be allowed to participate in the Ondo election.”

Oladeso also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) of violating the peace accord signed last week by all political parties in the state.

He said attack by thugs on its members in Idanre left seven persons injured.

Dr. Olafeso said Otunba Olowoniyi Akinlemimu, who was seriously injured was still on admission at the Intensive Care Unit of the State Specialists Hospital, Akure, while others were still receiving treatment after bullets were extracted from their bodies.

Olafeso said the actions of members of the APC were clearly in violation of the Peace Accord signed by all parties participating in this election.

“What happened in Edo will not happen in Ondo. They have no manifesto except to say they are lucky. They want to subvert it. Our people are ready for them. Our safety guard is that the people are with us,” he said.

But Director of Media of the Ondo APC, Steve Otaloro, said the PDP’s allegations were baseless, flimsy, and a fabricated story aimed at tarnishing the party’s image.

Otaloro said the PDP’s sudden concern about violence was a desperate attempt to divert attention from their impending defeat.

He advised the PDP to commit to the electoral process and stopped spreading unnecessary fear and agitation.

“The APC remains committed to a free, fair, and credible election. We urge the PDP to do the same and respect the democratic process. The people of Ondo State deserve better than baseless allegations and fear-mongering.

“The PDP’s press conference was merely a desperate attempt to prepare their script for their imminent loss in the coming election. They’re trying to create a narrative to explain away their impending defeat, but the people of Ondo State won’t be fooled.

“We’re confident that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa will emerge victorious, and we look forward to continuing the progress and development of our great state. Let’s focus on issue-based campaigning and allow the people to decide.”

Six hospitalised as thugs attack PDP supporters

Thugs yesterday attacked members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Idanre, Idanre Local Government Area.

Six members of the party were hospitalised after the attack.

This is the first time violence attack was witnessed since campaign activities began ahead of this Saturday’s governorship election.

Ondo PDP Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Adeyemi Fasoranti, said one of the victims was Otunba Olowoniyi Akinleminu.

He said other victims were taken to the intensive care unit of the State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

Olowoniyi said the thugs unleashed terror on the people because of the success of the party’s rally in the locality.

He said the thugs boasted that many would be killed before and during elections.

Another PDP chieftain, Bosede Salami said, the lives of PDP members were being threatened by suspected political thugs and cultists invited by political gladiators in the town.

Oladipo said he convened a peace meeting by bringing together leaders of the two major political parties in the area and he urged them to maintain peace and prevent their supporters from inciting violence.

Ondo 2024: Your shenanigans won’t deter our victory, APC tells PDP

All Progressives Congress (APC) says no amount of shenanigans from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will make it lose its focus of ensuring the success of its candidate, Lucky Ayedatiwa, in Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.

The APC Campaign Council Spokesman, Mr Banji Okunomo, stated this while addressing newsmen on Wednesday in Okitipupa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Okunomo was reacting to PDP’s allegations of planned rigging of the governorship poll by APC.

He said that PDP, through the allegation, had again shown its deep frustration and unpreparedness for the governorship election.

Okunomo noted that while the ‘serious-minded’ APC had been busy campaigning at every nook and cranny of the state, the opposition PDP was busy making baseless accusations.

“Rather than campaigning, they are going about making baseless accusations about some plans to rig the election.

“If there were such plans, why then will APC embark on rigorous and aggressive campaigns that we have done in the past few weeks?

“APC wants to categorically state that there are no plans to compromise any Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official because we have vowed to comply with the electoral process.

“We will not undercut the process because we have already engaged in massive mobilisation during our campaigns, knowing full well that Ayedatiwa will coast home to victory,” he said.

The spokesman said Aiyedatiwa had reiterated his commitment to a credible poll as he was convinced that he had been able to win the hearts of the electorate based on his humanist approach to governance in the last 10 months.

“APC does not need to compromise the process or the electoral umpire to win Saturday´s election because the party is popular and the candidate is widely accepted by all and sundry.

“To be modest, APC has launched out the best political campaigns in the history of the state as the campaign train visited all the 18 local government areas, including all the remote parts of the state.

“In each of the places we visited, people expressed their happiness with Ayedatiwa and we have assurances that they will vote for him on Saturday as an affirmation of their love for him and APC,” he said.

He attributed PDP’s attitude to what he called the unpopularity of its governorship candidate.

Okunomo appealed to PDP to toe the path of honour by focusing on rebuilding its house because of some political gladiators who had left the party as fallouts from its governorship primaries.

“I want to appeal to PDP that rather than making complaints that lack merit, the party should simply accept defeat by declining to participate in the election,” he stated.

Okunomo urged the people of the state to disregard PDP’s allegation and troop out en masse on Saturday to vote for APC and its candidates, Aiyedatiwa and Adelami, to enhance delivery of more democracy dividends.

Ondo 2024: PDP, APC clash over alleged plot to compromise election

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have differed over an alleged plot to compromise Saturday’s governorship election.

Ondo APC Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, alleged that the ruling party has submitted a list of two APC members per polling unit to INEC to serve as Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers. He said those whose names were submitted did not attend training of ad-hoc staff by INEC.

A statement by the spokesman for the Ondo PDP, Kennedy Peretei, said the APC banked on compromising the election at all costs, “having failed tragically to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.”

“The entire world is watching and this move by Adetimehin has vindicated our consistent call for the redeployment of Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, who has Adetimehin’s backing in this evil.

“Our party wishes to admonish all actors to play according to the rule. The entire world is watching, and nobody can hide behind one finger.”

Ondo APC spokesman, Alex Kalejaiye, said the party has no reason to contemplate compromising the election having worked for the people.

Kalejaiye stated that the ruling party was implementing numerous measures to improve the conditions of living of the people.

He said: “We have campaigned across the 18 local government areas, and we are prepared. We have appealed to the people, and they have shown understanding and a willingness to support the party. Therefore, we have no reason to even consider compromising the election; it is simply not true. This is just one of those fabrications from the PDP.

“There is no reason to do that. Our strategy is to campaign. We are working with the people; we have engaged every segment of society. Our focus is on improving the lives of those who are living in challenging conditions. Many projects are underway in the interest of the state’s economic and physical transformation. So, we will continue to appeal to the people.

“Tomorrow, we will hold our grand finale rally, gathering everyone together, and we will send the same message of continuity. However, we will not go to the extent of doing anything unconstitutional just to win an election.

“We have done the work we set out to do, and we are confident that the people are with us. There is no reason to take any improper actions to secure a victory.”

Civil society group knocks PDP for calling for REC’s removal

A coalition of civil society organisations in Ondo State has knocked the People’s Democratic Party and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for calling for the removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Babalola Oluwatoyin.

It said it was shameful that political actors intending to create chaos and tensions in the state were “attempting to use this negative and false narrative to achieve their devilish intentions”.

Speaking at a press briefing in Akure, the Chairman of the coalition, Franklin Oloniju, said they were worried about the activities of some political actors heating up the polity and creating uncertainty ahead of next week’s election. He said the coalition would stand firmly against any attempts to intimidate the Ondo REC because of her gender.

He said: “We are particularly worried about the ongoing mobilization against the person of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in the State. It seems this mobilization is being orchestrated to pre-empt the outcome of the election, disrupt the peaceful political atmosphere in the State, and as a way of instigating election violence, either during or after.

“This became more worrisome especially when the call from these quarters has not ceased even when the electoral management body has swiftly responded to the removal call of the REC by an Oyo State Governor through an unambiguous press statement.

“The State of Origin of the REC has never been in doubt in the past. These same political parties participated in the Edo State Governorship election and never questioned or campaigned against a REC that was accused of being a member of a political party and a brother of a well-known politician in the country.

“But has now found their voice because the REC in Ondo is a woman. We would like to state categorically that we will resist any gender-based violence and intimidation in the State, as we have always done.”
