Zoning: PDP must admit 2011 mistake – Atiku

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is of the view that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cannot move forward until it admits the wrong it committed in 2011, when it gave its presidential ticket to President Goodluck Jonathan in alleged contradiction to its zoning policy.

Reacting to the declaration by the party leadership, last week, that it will stick to its zoning policy for the 2015 elections, Atiku told The Nation that “If the leadership is serious about making amends for the injustice of the past, it has to first admit that a wrong had been done and then take appropriate steps to do the right thing.”

Atiku, one of the PDP presidential aspirants that lost out in 2011, following the abandonment of the party’s zoning policy said: “It is a fact that the issue of zoning is still enshrined in the constitution as amended. However, recall that in the run up to the 2011 election, the principle of zoning as enshrined in the party was implemented in breach. If the current leadership wants to right the wrongs of the past, it has to match its intent with action. It cannot be that zoning is right for some people and it is abandoned when it comes to others.”

National Secretary of PDP, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, had told newsmen that the party will stick to its zoning policy in picking its presidential candidate for the 2015 election.

He explained that the party’s leadership’s decision was informed by the realisation that, “What has endeared the PDP to Nigerians is the zoning arrangement, which has given minority groups the hope of realising their political aspirations in the country.”

Asked if that declaration would put paid to the long drawn controversy, Atiku retorted, “You cannot eat your cake and have it. If the leadership is serious about making amends for the injustice of the past, it has to first admit that a wrong had been done and then take appropriate steps to do the right thing.

There cannot be atonement without confession. The admission of error is the first step to rectification.”

Other Nigerians, including other PDP stalwarts expressed a similar sentiment. One of them is Mike Okorie, a Lagos- based lawyer and former PDP House of Representatives aspirant in Abia State.

Responding to the PDP statement Okorie said “For more reasons than one, the statement is not conclusive of the matter. Besides, the Party is noted for policy shifts, somersault and double standard. Let us not forget in a hurry the events leading up to 2011 Presidential elections and even thereafter, when zoning was observed in the breach, if not jettisoned. Now the trillion naira question is whose turn is it for at least to produce the next Speaker, House of Representatives, not to talk of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

  • PDP, NURTW in free for all

PDP, NURTW in free for all

There was a bloody post Sallah prayer clash between members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers {NURTW} and some members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party {PDP} in Ibadan yesterday.

It was gathered that the fracas took the intervention of the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji AbdulAzeez Arisekola in whose private residence the fracas ensued.

Sources hinted that pandemonium broke out when the PDP stalwarts in company of the former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin and Azeem Gbolarunmi stormed the Islamic chief’s residence after the Sallah prayers at the Agodi Eid praying ground singing the praises of their party while the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi was still in his office.

It was learnt that one of the promoters of the pro-PDP song who sat behind the chairman of the NURTW, Taofeek Ayorinde Fele was told to stop the song as it was politically offensive, but the advice was spurned.

Fele who became infuriated by the action was reported to have hit the PDP stalwart on the chest, prompting his NURTW members who were at the residence to pounce on the PDP stalwarts beating and clubbing them out of the place.

Arisekola who was not happy with the trend reportedly mounted one of the tables in his sitting room to call the warring mob to order and directed them to leave his house.

In the ensuing fisticuffs, no fewer than twenty persons were injured, while all the PDP supporters were allegedly beaten blue/black by the NURTW boys

Shortly after the incident, the caretaker chairman of the NURTW led his boys to the Agodi Government House, where Ajimobi counselled them against taking laws into their own hands and vowed that he would not hesitate to ban the union if they would engage in street fight.

In his reaction, Folarin denied that his party men precipitated the crisis, clarifying that his supporters were at Arisekola’s residence to felicitate with him on Sallah.

“Naturally, they were singing PDP songs when the NURTW men at the place became uncomfortable and beat the hell out of them. It is the height of political intolerance,” he said.

  • 2015: Why PDP will stick to zoning, by Oyinlola

2015: Why PDP will stick to zoning, by Oyinlola

National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola has given reasons why the party will stick to the zoning arrangement in picking candidates for the 2015 general election.

Oyinlola, who spoke with reporters in his office in Abuja, said experience has shown that zoning affords people from minority groups the opportunity to fulfil their political aspirations.

According to him, the zoning arrangement has endeared the PDP to Nigerians and has given minority groups the hope of realising their political ambitions without fear of domination by existing majority groups.

“What has endeared the PDP to Nigerians is the zoning arrangement, which has given minority groups the hope of realising their political aspirations in the country,” Oyinlola maintained.

The former Osun State Governor said the present crop of PDP leaders at the national level will ensure that the party is run in accordance with provisions of the party’s constitution.

He dismissed threats by the opposition parties coming together to form a united front to defeat the PDP in the 2015 elections, saying the move is an indication of weakness and lack of spread of the opposition.

He said: “A party that is sure of itself should be able to stand firm and fight election.

“ If you are ganging up, it means you don’t have the spread. Ganging up has never succeeded and will never succeed. The PDP is the only party with a national spread.”

Reacting to speculations that Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko may have been making plans to defect from the Labour Party (LP) to the PDP. Oyinlola said the leadership of the PDP was yet to be officially briefed on the governor’s defection plan.

He, however, maintained that there is enough room in the PDP to accommodate as many people as may wish to join, either as new members or as defectors from other parties.

Oyinlola lamented PDP’s loss of Ondo State to the LP, saying the party has gone back to the drawing board to make the necessary adjustments to get attuned to the needs of the people of the state.

“The people of Ondo State have spoken and they have told the world about their preference.

“The message from the outcome of the election is for us to do our homework and an appraisal of the election.

“We need to convince the electorate of what we can do for them before the next election”

He attributed the loss of Oyo and Ogun states to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2011 governorship election to what he described as irreconcilable differences among major political actors.

Oyinlola said but for the differences in opinion, the PDP would have won the governorship elections in the two states,

The PDP National Secretary dismissed insinuations that he was working against the return of former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel to the PDP, saying there was no reason for him to work against Daniel’s comeback bid.

  • Jonathan’s aide: I delivered my ward to PDP

The Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger-Delta Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, yesterday said he delivered his unit and ward to the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) governorship candidate, Chief Olusola Oke.

He debunked rumours that he lost his ward (Arogbo Ward 1) to the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Olusegun Mimiko.

Kuku, who spoke with reporters in Akure, said he won in his unit, (R.C.M. 1 Unit 004), which was in front of his father’s house in Arogbo town and most of the units in Arogbo Ward 1.

He noted that the PDP won with 154 votes higher than its closest rival, the LP.

In Arogbo Ward 2, the presidential aide said the PDP won with 22 votes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cancelled some units in the ward.

Although, the LP in Ese-Odo Local Government polled 9,137 votes against PDP’s 7,295 and ACN’s 2,987, Kuku said he won for his party in his traditional wards of Arogbo 1 and 2, adding that the records are there in the INEC office for anybody to verify.

Kuku, who also doubles as the Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), however, condemned the security situation in the riverine areas, stressing that security was relaxed in the coastal communities such as Arogbo, Ukparama, Bolouwo, Ajapa, Agadagba-Obon, Ikorigho, Ilowo and Ayetoro with the intention to weaken the stronghold of the PDP candidate, Olusola Oke.

He said only two gunboats patrolled the waterways in the state, adding that supporters of the PDP could not come out to vote for fear of being attacked.

Kuku went on: “The election was a step forward in a bid to conduct a free and fair poll. We should thank President Goodluck Jonathan for providing security. But it is pertinent to note that upland security was not enough for the poll, while there was no security in the polling unit of the PDP candidate in the coastal area.

“At every polling centre, only one unarmed policeman was attached with the INEC polling officials and most of them operated in fear and allowed some lapses such as the late accreditation and short period of voting.

“In fact, election materials in Oke’s ward came behind schedule to ensure Oke’s stronghold would not return the expected number of votes.”

He said his intervention across the coastal communities of Ese-Odo on the eve of the election and on election day restored peace, adding that an ex-militant leader unleashed terror on the waterways of Agadagba-Arogbo-Ukparama-Bolouwo.

According to Kuku, the ex-militant leader, on the eve of the election, went haywire, kidnapping, maiming and beating any presumed supporter of the opposition parties; and went ahead to seize the speed boats of the PDP lawmaker in the House of Assembly, Akpoebi Lubi “and my own to disrupt the movement of the agents of PDP to their units for monitoring on the election day.”

The PDP leader cited an incident in Ajapa where some hoodlums, allegedly loyal to the LP, abducted one of his cousins, Darios Aboyewa, a PDP polling agent in the unit, and made away with ballot boxes, which they later returned to the polling centre at gunpoint after thumb-printing ballot papers.

Kuku urged security agencies to recruit more personnel in preparation for future elections, so that all areas, no matter their geographical locations, would have enough security personnel to man the polling booths during elections.

Man arrested with huge cash, list of beneficiaries

A man was on Saturday arrested by a combination of police and soldiers in Ondo town with huge cash and list of beneficiaries.

The man, who identified himself as Samuel Oni, was arrested at exactly 12:30pm at Oke- Itunu, Akure Motor Park, in the town.

Voters waiting to cast their votes at the polling units raised the alarm after sighting the list, party agents brochure and the huge cash in his hands with suspicious moves.

They alleged that he wanted to start distributing the cash to electorate to buy votes for a candidate.

Policemen at the polling units as well as soldiers stationed at the Yaba Junction swooped on the suspects and arrested him.

The suspect confessed to be an agent of the Peoples Democratic Party and explained that the huge cash was feeding allowance for party agents.

He was beaten by the voters before security agents took him away.

The crowd, however, rejected attempt by the police to take him away, expressing doubts that justice would be done in his case.

He was later whisked away by gun-trotting soldiers in a Ford van marked NA 929BOS at about 1:00pm.

  • PDP: why we expelled Agbi, Adegoroye, Adegoke, others

THE Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday alerted the public to the activities of some politicians recently expelled for anti-party activities.

They include: Olu Agbi, Ademola Adegoroye, Segun Adegoke, Kunle Agunbiade and Akin Olowokere.

The Deputy Director of Publicity of the Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation (OOCO), Mr. Rotimi Ogunleye, said in a statement that the politicians were reprimanded several times for anti-party activities and surreptitious romance with the Labour Party (LP) before they were expelled.

He said PDP expelled them because they have become a liability.

Ogunleye said: “A few of them have contested and failed repeatedly, while one of them served as a mole even while contesting the governorship seat in the state.

“We know a Professor of Diplomatic History among them who has refused to be guided by a sense of history. We equally know an old lawyer who has inherited the ill-luck of electoral failure.

“We are surprised that instead of showing remorse after their expulsion, these supposed gentlemen engaged in criminal activities by parading themselves as members of the PDP.

“In their usual manner, they were paid by Dr. Olusegun Mimiko to do a hatchet job. Part of the assignment, for which they have been paid, was to wear our vests, parade themselves as members of the PDP and declare for the outgoing Ondo State Governor.”

  • PDP denies supporting Mimiko

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has denied that the party is canvassing support for the Labour Party candidate in Saturday’s poll, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

He said Mimiko is not a member of the party, wondering why PDP would ask people to vote for its opponent.

The PDP chieftain spoke at the weekend during a rally organised by the party in Akure for its standard bearer, Olusola Oke. President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice- President Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark and other PDP bigwigs were also at the event.

Tukur said: “Mimiko is not in PDP. We have our candidate in the person of Olusola Oke, a lawyer who is qualified to govern Ondo State. Our desire, as President Jonathan said, is to have Ondo State back in our fold. Oke is well-experienced in terms of governance, having been a member of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and a national legal adviser of the party.

“The high-powered delegation of the party that came to Ondo State, led by Mr. President, Vice-President, Senate President and my humble self is an indication that PDP is behind this tall, handsome man called Oke. We use this opportunity to dispel the rumour that PDP is backing Governor Mimiko.”

He warned members involved in anti-party activities to desist from the act, saying PDP would deal with anybody culpable of the offence.

President Jonathan urged Ondo indigenes to vote out Mimiko, saying the Labour Party should not be given a second term ticket.

He said PDP was ready to transform the state.

“Ondo State is endowed with human and natural resources. What is on ground is not commensurate with her potentials,” the President said.

While canvassing support for the PDP candidate, Jonathan warned political parties not to engage in hooliganism. He urged parents to warn their children not to be used as thugs by the parties.

  • PDP suspends national vice chairman

The National Working Committee (NWC), of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, has suspended the party’s North East National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Girigiri Lawal.

According to a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, the suspension takes immediate effect.

The statement said the NWC took the decision in furtherance of its resolve to entrench discipline at all levels of the party’s operations.

It added that Lawal had earlier been invited by the party`s NWC for preliminary hearing on an alleged violation of the party’s constitution.

“After the preliminary hearing, the NWC resolved to suspend Lawal for a period of one month with effect from October 12.

“The matter has been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee of our party for further action,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Metuh as saying in the statement.

  • PDP to Mimiko: don’t deride Fed Govt projects

Barely 11 days to the governorship election in Ondo State, the standard bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olusola Oke, has warned Governor Olusegun Mimiko through his campaign organisation, the Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation (OOCO), not to deride Federal Government projects.

Speaking with reporters in Akure, the Director-General of OOCO, Dr. Dare Bada, said the frustration of Mimiko is understood as his attempts to rig the election are on a daily basis being uncovered.

Bada said the governor has engaged mercenaries who will disrupt election in the areas where he is not popular.

He said the targeted areas are Ondo North and Ondo South.

Bada alleged: “Mimiko has been lobbying the Presidency to disorganise our party. He has bribed a lot of people with the state money. The bribes are given out in hard currencies.

“We have it on good authority that some thugs have been hired by the LP. Also, Toyota Hilux Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) have been purchased and branded in security colour to be used by the hoodlums.

“Security uniform to be used by the thugs have also been sewn.

“The coming of Vice-President Namadi Sambo has deflated his bubbles of lies in the minds of our loyal party members and the people of Ondo State.

“His latest attempt is the dragging of the amnesty programme of the Federal Government into his dirty politics. I think it is a disservice to play politics with the amnesty programme of the government, considering its level of success and advantages.”

  • Plateau: Slain legislator’s wife wins election

Kaneng, the wife of the late Majority Leader of Plateau House of Assembly, Gyang Fulani, was elected on Saturday to replace her husband on the Barkin Ladi State constituency seat.

The seat became vacant following the death of Fulani with Sen. Gyang Dantong, on July 8 in a stampede when gunmen attacked mourners at Maseh, a village in the Bachit District of Riyom Local Government Area.

Similarly, Mr Gyang Pwajok won the election for Plateau North Senatorial District made vacant by the death of Dantong.

Both candidates contested the by-elections on Saturday on the platform of PDP.

The INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Fatima Sawa of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, said Pwajok scored 195,349 votes to beat retired Col. David Dungs of DPP, who polled 38,847 votes and others.

Sawa also announced that APGA’s Chris Giwa scored 36,245 votes, while Danladi Atu of ANPP got 30,132 votes and Yusuf Pam, of ACN received 27,609 votes in the Senate race.

She said Lumumba Adeh of LP got 25,527 votes in the election.

“Pwajok, having satisfied the requirements of the law and having scored the highest number of votes required, is hereby declared winner of the Plateau North senatorial district election,” she said.

INEC also announced that Kaneng polled 33,549 votes to beat Bulus Bot of DPP, who scored 6,718 votes and Ezekiel Gwom of ACN, who got 4,267 votes.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Plateau, Mr Habu Zarma, in an address, appealed to the winner to be magnanimous in victory and carry others along.

He attributed the peace that prevailed during the elections to “the hand of God at work in Plateau”.

The Director-General of Pwajok Campaign Organisation, Mr Abbey Aku, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the results were declared that the PDP victory was for all Plateau people.

“The victory is for all Plateau people and I wish to call on the co-contestants to unite around the winner so as to get the best from the Senate,’’ he said.

Before entering the race, Pwajok, a former University of Jos Political Science teacher, was the Chief of Staff to Governor Jonah Jang. (NAN)
