  • PDP members defect to ACN

Hundreds of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area(LCDA) in Lagos state have joined the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN).

The decampees were led by Mr. Idowu Ogundare at a rally which coincided with ACN meeting in Agbowa.

Ogundare said they left the PDP because of the developmental efforts of the Executive Chairman of Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA, Prince Segun Adetola, and Governor Raji Fashola.

Adetola, he said, has initiated several progressive moves such as distribution of 100 free GCE forms, construction of a block of six classrooms with head teacher’s office and provision of benches, tables and chairs in schools across the LCDA.

PDP chieftains, supporters defy rain for Oke

Despite the downpour in Akure yesterday that nearly marred the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Chief Olusola Oke’s campaign mega rally, chieftains and supporters of the party defied the rain and trooped out for the event.

The politicians, clad in yellow vests and fez caps, chanted Oke’s name and sang political songs in the heavy rain which lasted for about three hours.

Some PDP chieftains became prayer warriors at the rally held at the Akure Democracy Park. They sought God’s intervention and asked him to stop the rain.

Oke and his running mate, Saka Lawal, who led Vice-President Namadi Sambo, the National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and other chieftains to the podium, were moved by the commitment of the chieftains and members who defied the rain and waited for them.

The PDP standard bearer in the October 20 poll and his running mate later joined the chieftains and members of the party in the rain for the rally.

Sambo hailed the supporters. He said they have shown that the PDP is ready to reclaim the state.

The Vice-President said the Ondo people are agitating for a change and want the PDP to reclaim the state.

Sambo expressed the commitment of the presidency to a free and fair election, saying the President Goodluck Jonathan administration would provide the machinery that would ensure the One Man, One Vote Philosophy.

  • You are part of PDP failure, Akeredolu tells Mimiko

You are part of PDP failure, Akeredolu tells Mimiko

The Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) has challenged Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, to explain why he should not share in the blame of the Dr. Segun Agagu- led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government.

The organisation said Mimiko is also responsible for the failure of the PDP government, which he strongly berated and described as the years of the holocaust at the gubernatorial debate in Akure at the weekend.

A statement by the Director of Media, Publicity and Strategy Akeredolu Campaign Organisation, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku said: “Is Mimiko not the Secretary to the State Government and member of the State Executive Council in the Agagu government?

“If he was that pained why did he not denounce the policies of that administration or resign?”

It also noted: “The same Mimiko was rewarded with a ministerial appointment by the same PDP and under former President Obasanjo whose administration paupersied the entire South West, leaving the Ota road, his home town in a dilapidated state.”

ACO added it is irresponsible of Mimiko to promise to continue working for the state after his admission of failure during the debate.

The organisation queried: “In saying he was going to continue what he is doing now, is it that he would continue to build market stalls, boreholes his token gifts to the people of Ondo in the 21st century?

“Would he continue to build fountains where there is no pipe borne water? Will he continue to conceive abandoned projects like the Doom-Dome, Ondo township road dualisation, Owo township road dualisation?

“Will he continue to aggravate youths of the State with gross unemployment? Will he continue to punish the Staff of Adekunle Ajasin University and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo who have not been paid 28 months areas of salaries and allowances against the holy writ that a labourer is worthy of his wage?”

  • PDP accuses LP of promoting violence

The Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday said the ruling Labour Party (LP) was promoting violence ahead of the October 20 election.

In a statement by the Director-General of the Olusola Oke/Saka Lawal Campaign Organisation, Dr Dare Bada, the PDP said Governor Olusegun Mimiko was creating fear to prepare the ground for his alleged rigging plan.

The statement reads: “Gentlemen, you are aware we just concluded our campaign in all the 203 wards in Ondo State. Throughout the period, we had a peaceful tour and our members kept to our creed of decent behaviour.

“It is worrisome, however, that the LP has been attacking the leaders and members of our party since it realises the rising profile of the PDP and the readiness of the people to vote the party back to power.

“Over the weekend, LP’s weird thugs invaded the PDP secretariat at Ijare, in Ifedore Local Government Area. They removed the posters of the party, pasted theirs in broad daylight armed with dangerous weapons. It took the unusual maturity and enviable calmness by our members to let go the unmitigated brazen oppression.

“At Uso, in Owo Local Government Area, LP thugs came to the PDP office and defaced the party’s billboards. They tore the banners and posters of the PDP.

  • Fear of ACN grips PDP in Kwara

Fear of ACN grips PDP in Kwara

Should the spate of defections to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) by members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties in Kwara State continue, the PDP, in particular, may be in for serious misfortune. This is the current fear being nursed by many PDP chieftains.

Recently, the expansive Latara Hall, Ajase-Ipo Road, Ilorin played host to scores of defectors, ACN supporters and loyalists from within and other neighbouring ACN states.

It was an occasion for the celebration of the defection of some members of the PDP, Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) and Accord to ACN.

The defectors claimed they were leaving a “retrogressive and oppressive” PDP in the state to the progressive party, ACN.

Notable among the defectors are former PDP deputy governorship candidate in the 1999 election, Barrister Akinmade Yahaya Abolarin; former Commissioner and a leading light in the Saraki political dynasty, Chief James Ayeni, and a former PDP chieftain and ex-chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Engineer Jide Usman.

ACN national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; the party’s governorship candidate in the 2011 election, Mohammed Dele Belgore (SAN); representatives of Osun and Ogun state governors among others, were also on hand to receive the defectors at the colourful ceremony in the state capital.

Spokesperson of the defectors, Prince Shuaib Olanrewaju premised their defection on what he described thus: “The reason for our defection is premised on the fact that the state was among the original twelve states created since 1967, having nothing in terms of human capital and social transformation to justify the age of its existence. When we all joined hands with the PDP in the last year poll to deliver the state to the party, our expectation was that the good people of the state would be rewarded with good dividends of democracy.

“Unfortunately, unemployment, poverty and fraudulent political promises occasioned by the PDP’s bad leadership have become the order of the day. All around us, you find mortuaries of wreckage inflicted by PDP in the state. During the past nine or more years, we all have been running a political race, the spectators (the electorate) have been looking on (though not impotently). Our state is like a patient whose condition is daily deteriorating.

“There is the need for the state to be delivered from the hands of PDP that has constituted itself to a political demon and clog in the wheel of progress of the state. In order to achieve this political deliverance, it becomes imperative for all the progressive elements to join forces to fight these political oppressors and chase them away from governance. We promise to form a solid followership for the ACN to engender meaningful development in the state. We are declaring for the ACN today; we shall cooperate with the party from the ward, local, state to national levels to ensure the party’s victory in the 2013 local government election in the state and the national elections in 2015.”

Prince Kolawole added that “here and there, there are evidences of total falling out of the common people with the irresponsible government of PDP. We all know that this state is dead broke. We do know it too, we had to accept that it is so because workers’ salaries are not paid when due and few weeks ago, the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) threatened to go on strike over non-payment of their salaries and other entitlements.”

The ACN spokesman accused the PDP-led Federal Government of incapable of proffering solution to the nation’s problems.

He posited that the PDP-led government’s ineptitude had resulted in the alarming rate of youth unemployment, epileptic power supply and general infrastructural decay.

Maintaining that the PDP government had failed Nigerians, the Mohammed threw jibes at the party’s leadership for its spirited effort to defend President Goodluck Jonathan’s aide, Dr Doyin Okupe, over allegation of contract scandal levelled against him by the Benue State government

The PDP, Mohammed insisted, had never been truthful to Nigerians on any national issue, citing the “many lies the PDP government churned out to Nigerians on the illness of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.”

He added that Nigerians deserved to know the exact situation of the health status of the first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.

Lamenting what he called lack of development and dearth of infrastructure in Kwara State, Mohammed said that the PDP-led government in the state was in no way different from the PDP government at the centre, adding: “The PDP at the national level is not performing, so you cannot expect anything different at the state level.”

In his remarks, Belgore advised Kwarans to stop “suffering in silence” by teaming up with the ACN to sweep PDP away in the next general elections.

Belgore added: “ACN remains the only viable alternative to PDP and the party that genuinely has the interest of the masses at heart. It is becoming clearer that PDP has absolute nothing to offer. Kwara in 2012 is worst than it was last year. People are coming in droves to ACN and there is a lot more than what you are seeing. This decamping, you will keep seeing more as we go along. My charge to Kwarans is for them to defend their right, support the party that will protect their interest and advance their cause and development. It is no point suffering. Support ACN and we will rout that evil called PDP out of our state.

“This is not the Kwara state of my dream with these PDP people in power. What I’m seeing is a state of nightmares. It might be the dream of a few selfish people that are bent on plundering the state for their own personal gains, but it is certainly not my dream state and that of majority of Kwarans.”

How we can stop exodus of members, by PDP

Apparently worried by the exodus of its members to opposition parties, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has resolved to reconcile factions thrown up by conflict of interests among its members nationwide.

National Chairman Alhaji Bamanga Tukur made this known yesterday while receiving the report of the peace committee that reconciled factions in the Benue State chapter.

Tukur said the party cannot win elections when members are split into factions, adding that the party would ensure that all factions are reconciled before the next cycle of elections.

He acknowledged the fact that there will always be problems arising from disagreements and conflict of interests, but stressed that the leadership at all levels must be prepared to listen to the grievances of aggrieved members with the view to settling them.

He said: “We will continue to reconcile warring factions within the party nationwide because we need to be united before we can win elections and deliver the goods to the electorate.

“There will be problems but we need to listen to the grievances of aggrieved members for us to build a strong party. We need to be united to build a strong government and to build a strong nation”, Tukur added.

Apparently worried by the mass exodus of members from the Peoples Democratic Party to opposition parties, the leadership of the party has resolved to reconcile the various factions thrown up by conflict of interests among its members nationwide.
The National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, stated this on Wednesday while receiving the report of the peace committee that reconciled factions in the Benue chapter of the party.
Tukur stated that the party cannot win elections when members are split into factions across the nation, adding that the party would ensure that all factions are reconciled before the next circle of elections.
He acknowledged the fact that there will always be problems arising from disagreements and conflict of interests, but stressed that the leadership at all levels must be prepared to listen to the grievances of aggrieved members with the view to settling them before they get out of hand.
“We will continue to reconcile warring factions within the party nationwide because we need to be united before we can win elections and deliver the goods to the electorate.
“There will be problems but we need to listen to the grievances of aggrieved members for us to build a strong party. We need to be united to build a strong government and to build a strong nation,” Tukur added.
Earlier, chairman of the peace committee, Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun, regretted that there were five failed attempts to conduct party congresses in some local governments in Benue State in the past, as a result of disagreements.
He attributed the cause of disagreements in the state chapter to attempts by certain local leaders to exclude perceived enemies from the party.
According to him, but for the timely intervention of his committee in the Benue crisis, there would have been massive exodus of members in the last few days and urged party leaders to allow interested persons to join the party without restrictions.
Other members of the peace committee are Chief Don Etiebet, Alhaji Dauda Birma, Mrs. Bola Doherty, Senator Jonathan Zwingina and Dr. Mohammed Shata.

Court to rule on PDP, Ondo CJ suit Friday

An Akure State High Court will on Friday rule on a suit filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the Chief Judge, Justice Sehinde Kumuyi, and Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

The PDP took the action over the duo’s alleged involvement in the internal affairs of the party.

Justice Kumuyi was alleged to be a card-carrying member of the Labour Party (LP) and accused of attending the party’s meeting, according to a letter written by the former Chairman of the party, Dr. Olaiya Oni.

The PDP is praying the court to bar Kumuyi from presiding over any of its cases at the High Court or assigning same to any judge.

The party averred that the CJ breached his oath of office when he allegedly joined the LP and had a meeting with Mimiko, where it was reportedly decided that the Kumuyi should grant certain orders to destabilise the party.

At the resume hearing of the matter yesterday, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), opposed the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter on the ground that the action ought not to start with an originating summons.

Justice B. F. Adeyeye adjourned the matter till Friday for ruling on jurisdiction.

  • ‘Osun PDP should prove allegation against Aregbesola’

‘Osun PDP should prove allegation against Aregbesola’

The Osun State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday said it would not dignify the state’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with an explanation on its allegation against Governor Rauf Aregbesola until it proves them.

In a statement by its Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, CAN noted that the PDP allegations were made to attract undeserved attention to it.
The statement reads: “We owe PDP no explanation as to how we run government because they have not demonstrated objectivity and a dependable ability to prove beyond all reasonable doubts their spurious allegations against Ogbeni’s government since he came to power in November 2010.

“It is not in the public interest or that of civilised democratic practice for us to continually suffer fools that appear to abound in Osun.

“If their spokesperson and informants have any sense of responsibility and seriously concerned that Ogbeni is doing anything in government that violates the law and diminish the ethics of civilised governance, they should go to court and seek redress; otherwise, they should stop this stupid business of making senseless noises to draw ignoble attention to themselves.

“The ACN in the State of Osun sees the PDP as a pathetic collection of unserious and idle people who are not equipped with the normal sense and sensibilities to appreciate that politics is a lot more serious business than manufacturing lies against their political opponents to score base points.

“Aregbesola’s trips outside the country are impacting significantly on governance and service delivery in the state of Osun. But if the PDP suffers such horrific impairment not to recognise it, they should not disturb public conscience with sick mentality.”

  • 2015 presidency: Look beyond PDP, ANPP boss tells Igbo leaders

2015 presidency: Look beyond PDP, ANPP boss tells Igbo leaders

The Igbo should look beyond the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)to actualise their quest to produce the President in 2015, All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) National chair Ogbonnaya Onu advised yesterday.

Dr. Onu spoke at the Igbo Leadership Forum of the World Igbo Congress Convention at Orlando, Florida, United States.

His speech is titled: “The Igbo: The Path To Nigeria’s Presidency In 2015”.

The ANPP chairman said the Igbo must not fail to realise that the Constitution makes no provision for independent candidates, and therefore they need a political platform to realise their political aspiration.

His words: ‘‘Anyone who wants to run for an elective office, whether as a Councillor in a Local Government or as the President of the Federal Republic , must be sponsored by a political party. The first important step in running for election is to contest and win the primaries of a political party and become its candidate.

‘‘It is remarkable that of all the major ethnic groups in our dear country, the Igbo are the only ones who are indigenous only in our country. There is no other country in the world where Igbo are an indigenous people. Today, propelled by the indomitable spirit of adventure and entrepreneurship, the Igbo are found in every part of our dear country and in virtually every country of the world.”

Onu said: ‘‘For the Igbo to do well in politics, they should not put their eggs in one basket. What we have today is that most of the Igbo elite are in the ruling party. They believe that the ruling party is where the action is. This has its advantages. It certainly has many disadvantages.

‘‘It is very important to always consider what happens in such a case if, for one reason or the other, the ruling party is unable to make available its platform. In that case every effort made, then comes to nothing. Should this be allowed to be so? No.

‘‘The Igbo in politics should look beyond the ruling party. We should study the political terrain very carefully and take decisions which are in our own very best interest. We should always remember what our ancestors taught us, that when answering the call of nature, we should go with two pieces of sticks. If one falls by the wayside unnoticed, the other can still be relied upon to perform its duty when the need arises.

‘‘The Igbo need an alternative political party that has a national reach and is not perceived by the general public as a regionally-based party. The All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, is that political party which the Igbo should embrace so that they can always make a viable choice. The Igbo need to diversify, as an insurance against the unknown and the unseen.

“For twelve years (1999-2011), the ANPP remained the second largest political party in the country. It initially controlled nine States which spread across three geo-political zones. It also controlled slightly above one quarter of the membership of the National Assembly. Even though its fortunes have declined, it now controls three States. The ANPP has a Senator from Kogi State in North Central Nigeria and a Member of the House of Representatives from Ebonyi State in the Southeast Nigeria.

‘‘The time has come when the Igbo should stop putting all their political eggs into one basket, particularly when the basket is in the custody of others. Allowing the Igbo ambition to be determined by only the ruling political party can result in disappointment at a time that no remedy exists. This cannot be the right road to follow.

‘‘The Igbo should remember that its political leaders were the founding leaders of the All Peoples Party, APP, that later became the ANPP. These great Igbo sons and daughters laid the foundation and nurtured the Party to what it was in 1999. These Igbo political leaders include Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Chief Sam Mbakwe, Chief C. C. Onoh, Chief E. C. Iwuanyanwu, Chief Arthur Nzeribe, Chief Evan Enwerem, Chief Ken Nnamani, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, Dr Hyde Onuaguluchi, Chief Martin Elechi, Chief Chekwas Okorie, Chief Ben Obi, Chief (Mrs) Joy Emordi, Dr Ezekiel Izuogu, Chief Gbazuagu Nweke Gbazuagu, Chief Chris Nwankwo, Chief Frank Ogbuewu, Chief Lynda Ikpeazu.
