Edo poll: PDP, APC trade blames over policeman’s death

All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State have traded blames over the death of a policeman in Benin City, Inspector Akor Onu.

PDP demanded that APC and its candidate for the September 21 governorship election, Monday Okpebholo, must face investigation for alleged roles in the violence that resulted in the death of the policeman on July 18.

Responding to the allegation made by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba, in a statement yesterday, APC governorship campaign spokesman in Edo State, Mr. Sebastine Ebhuomhan, expressed shock that the PDP national headquarters was just reacting to the unfortunate incident solely to distract police investigation.

In his statement in Abuja yesterday, Ologunagba condemned APC leaders for giving scholarships to the children of the slain policeman, after allegedly orchestrating the violence that caused his death.

He said: “PDP maintains that APC leaders must not be allowed to hide under the guise of the scholarships to cover their complicity, manipulate and discourage the family of the slain police officer and the unsuspecting public from insisting on full investigation and prosecution of APC leaders implicated in the dastardly act.

“From their conduct, it is clear that the APC leaders have no value for human life and believe they can sweep the matter under the carpet and walk away from their crime.

“Our party restates its call on the Inspector General of Police to investigate with the preponderance of pictorial and video evidence, which show that thugs allegedly mobilised by the APC to escort its governorship candidate and other APC leaders from the Benin Airport into the city were responsible for the violence that claimed the life of the police officer.”

Reacting in a statement, APC governorship campaign spokesman in Edo State, Ebhuomhan, condemned the PDP national headquarters for attempting to sell ‘an ill-motivated afterthought’ to knowledgeable people of Edo State, saying PDP appeared to have suddenly woken up from slumber to try and distract police investigation into a killing that occurred weeks ago.

“PDP statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, calling for the investigation of the APC candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and the party members over the death of the gallant Police Inspector Akor Onu is a calculated distraction to the investigation of the Edo State Police Command, ordered by the Inspector-General of Police. It should be condemned by all democratic and peace loving citizens.

“How long has it taken Ologunagba and his PDP at the Federal, Edo State and governorship campaign levels to formally admit to the murder of Onu? None of these authorities, including the state government, deemed it reasonable to even mention the death of Onu in their past statements, only to now come out with this bizarre statement three weeks after the murder.

“During the long time, the same desperate and violent Edo State government and PDP rushed an untruthful petition to the police as well as an unsigned, illegal advert to media organisations to blackmail selected APC leaders and members at airport on the day of the murder. Almost all the organisations that published that blackmail have since apologised. This shows the extent of the evil party called PDP.

“It is good that Okpebholo, characteristically, has not abandoned the family of his friend and protector, Onu, even in death, unlike Governor Godwin Obaseki and his puppet, Mr. Akintunde Ighodalo, who often uses and dumps their helpers when they are still alive. Edo people are happy to hear that Okpebholo did not only visit Onu’s family, but also assumed the huge responsibilities the slain bread winner left behind.

“Lastly, PDP and Edo State Government need not distract police investigation of Onu’s murder; the evidence of how Obaseki’s Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and Edo State Public Work Volunteers (PUWOV) personnel murdered Onu and injured others is very clear.

“Those who shot and killed Onu have since taken refuge under Obaseki’s executive immunity after police invitation letters were served on them through the government. After all, everybody saw Obaseki threatening Edo State and Nigeria after receiving the letters.

“Okpebholo needs not remind anybody that Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Funsho Adegboye, was not far away when ESSN murdered Onu,” the APC governorship campaign spokesman alleged.

PDP, APC campaign councils clash in Edo

The Governorship campaign management council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State have clashed ahead of the September 21 poll.

The Director-General of PDP’s campaign council, Mathew Iduoriyekemwen, at a briefing in Benin, fired the first salvo, by alleging that unnamed leaders of APC had perfected plans with some policemen to harass, intimidate and persecute some members of PDP to cause chaos in Edo.

He said: “We urge the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, to maintain the high integrity that is associated with his office, and also note that the Nigeria Police are for all Nigerians, and not the extension of APC.

“We also call on the IGP to use his good offices to cause an unbiased and thorough investigation, based on our complaints.”

The Director of Publicity, Edo APC governorship campaign council, Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo however berated Iduoriyekemwen and other leaders of PDP of being economical with the truth.

Omo-Ojo said: “Governor Godwin Obaseki and his handpicked godson, Asue Ighodalo, are agents of destabilisation. Their action, so far, is an attempt to harrass the police and block investigation of the violent crimes they have visited on the state and its people.

“In a saner clime, the PDP’s government in the state would have disbanded the Edo State Security Network (ESSN).”

A former ward secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Aniocha South LGA, Azubuike Christian Uwechue, has said that attacks on his house by some political thugs resulted in the death of one of his relatives.

Azubuike accused disgruntled party leaders of orchestrating the attack on his home in the Ogwashi-Uku area.

The attack occurred just two weeks after Azubuike was accused of engaging in anti-party activities and receiving a large sum of money from All Progressives Congress (APC) politicians.

Azubuike, a two-time secretary of Ward 3 of the PDP in Aniocha South LGA, claimed that party leaders were spreading false accusations against him to incite party members.

In a statement issued on Sunday morning, July 28, Azubuike revealed that the party leaders were upset because their preferred candidate did not secure the party’s nomination for council chairmanship.

He further alleged that the leaders hired political thugs to intimidate and assault his supporters.

Recounting the attack, Azubuike stated that the thugs broke into his home and killed a member of his domestic staff named Michael.

According to Azubuike, the attack lasted for more than 15 minutes. These thugs invaded the compound of my house by smashing my gate.

“They shot at my house, smashed my front door, and destroyed properties worth millions.”

Reacting to the development, the Divisional Police Officer of Ogwashi-Uku Division confirmed the incident.

He further stated that an investigation has been launched to unravel the perpetrators.

Some unidentified political thugs have set ablaze the home of former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ward secretary, Azubuike Christian Uwechue in Delta state.

Azubuike, a grassroots mobilizer who had reportedly clashed with party leaders over allegations of anti-party activities and accepting money from opposition party members, experienced the attack on the evening of Saturday, July 27, in the Ogwashi-Uku area.

An eyewitness, identified as Collins Ibieneye, recounted how the hoodlums invaded Azubuike’s residence, jumped over the fence, and destroyed window glasses and other valuables.

According to Collins, the thugs carried gasoline, foam, axes, Dane guns, cutlasses, and other dangerous weapons during the attack.

“They beat up three people they met inside the house, including two young women. One of the thugs carted away a laptop and two sneakers while another was filming the activity,” Collins said.

According to Collins, the timely intervention of local vigilantes and neighbours prevented the hoodlums from burning the entire residence.

“The thugs vowed to come back and raze the entire building completely if he did not stop interfering in the affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party, Aniocha LG chapter, and the state at large”, he added.

Martin Chike Amaewhule, Speaker of the 27-member House of Assembly in Rivers State, was among the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders who participated in the party’s ward congress on Saturday, despite court orders halting the exercise.

Amaewhule arrived at Ward 1 Oro Igwe in Obio Akpor Local Government Area to cheers from a crowd of supporters.

The party members reportedly held the congress at Eliozu community hall, where they successfully elected new ward executives and a three-man delegate. The event was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The PDP also held its congress in Ward 14, Eneka/Rukpokwu, in Obio/Akpor LGA.

According to sources, the event saw a massive turnout of party faithful, who participated in the exercise and re-elected Chukwuemeka Owhor as chairman for a second term.

Wobe Mike Junior was reportedly elected the Vice-Chairman; ThankGod Wuzor, Secretary; Ogbonna Joy Wobiareari, Assistant Secretary; Mr. Nyekwe Victor Nyebuchi – Publicity Secretary; Iyke Chinda, Treasurer and Owunnah Prince Ovunda’ Youth Leader among others.

Owhor was quoted as thanking party members for re-electing him for a second term, promising to carry all members along in his leadership for the progress of the party at the ward level.

The PDP was also said to have held its congress in Ward13 Obio/Akpor LGA where Chief Wenekanma Chijioke expressed joy over the turnout of members.

He was also quoted as saying that Ward 13 was solidly behind the FCT Minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, whom he described as the political leader of PDP in Rivers State.

Nsirim Samuel Wilson was said to have thanked the party for re-electing him as the chairman of the ward.

It was gathered that the ward congress was observed by INEC officials and security agencies

A similar exercise was reportedly held unhindered at ward five in Ogu Bolo local government area.

Supporters of the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, were said to have avoided the exercise in obedience to the two court orders.

But Amaewhule and other supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom partook in it relying on an earlier Federal High Court order that validated the exercise.

Justice Charles Wali on Friday barred the party, its National Chairman Iliya Damagum, and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, or their agents, from gathering anywhere in Rivers State to hold ward, local government, and state congresses pending the determination of the suit before the court.

The judge further directed the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, the Director-General of the Department of State Security Service (DSS), and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to enforce the order.

Before Wali’s order, Justice Sobere Biambo had issued an order in a suit filed by David Omereji and 10 others stopping the PDP, its national chairperson, national financial secretary, and national organizing secretary from conducting the congress.

However, a Federal High Court in Abuja was said to have countered the first order and allowed the PDP to proceed with its congresses.

Justice Peter Lifu had barred the Department of State Services, the police, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and seven others from “stopping, truncating, or disrupting” the congresses.

Court bars INEC, PDP from recognising Ebonyi caretaker committee

The Abakaliki Division of the Federal High Court has prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the Steve Oruruo-led caretaker committee of the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The court also barred the PDP from recognising the caretaker committee.

The court, presided by Justice Hillary Oshomah, gave the order while ruling on a motion on notice filled in a suit by a former state chairman of the party, Silas Ọnụ against the party and INEC.

It said the order will subsist pending the hearing and determination of the originating summons in the matter.

The party has been embroiled in crisis which started in the lead up to the 2023 general elections and which affected its chances during the election.

The crisis has continued unabated long after the elections leading to serious factionalisation of the party with many key chieftains dumping the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, as peace was being expected in the party, the National Working Committee of the party, appointed a caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party with an Enugu State indigene, Steve Oruruo appointed Chairman of the committee.

This caused fresh crisis in the party with more bigwigs like Ex-Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim crossing over to the APC last two weeks.

In the motion on notice filed on June 20, 2024, one of the aggrieved stakeholders, Mr Onu had prayed the court for an order restraining the PDP from appointing the Chairman, Secretary and Members of the Caretaker Committee pending the hearing and determination of the Originating Summons.

He also prayed the court for an order  barring the 1st(PDP) and 2nd(INEC) Defendants/Respondents from recognizing anyone appointed as Chairman, Secretary and Members of Peoples Democratic Party, Ebonyi State Chapter, Caretaker Committee by the National Organizing Secretary pending the hearing and determination of the Originating Summons.

When the matter came up for hearing on 19th of July, Counsel to the PDP,  Godwin Ngwuta told the court that the party is not inclined to oppose the application.

Delivering his ruling, Justice Oshomah granted the prayers of the applicant and barred the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) and the PDP itself from recognizing the Ebonyi State chapter Caretaker Committee of the party.

He said: “That the 1st and 2nd Defendants are by Order of this Honourable Court barred from recognizing anyone appointed as Chairman, Secretary and Members of Peoples Democratic Party, Ebonyi State Chapter, Caretaker Committee by the National Organizing Secretary pending the hearing and determination of the Originating Summons.

Justice Oshomah further ordered all Parties in the matter “to take note of the pendency of this action and maintain status quo ante bellum by the virtue of the doctrine of lis pendis and not to embark on any act or conduct capable of destroying the res and subject matter of this action or take any step calculated to or with the potential of rendering nugatory the outcome or any decision of this Honourable Court on the substantive action.”

Ondo 2024: Defections won’t deter us, says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state has said that the resignation of a former state chairman of the party, Ebenezer Alabi, and the defection of some of its chieftains would not dampen its resolve to win the November 16th governorship election.

It said it has received more members of the ruling All Progressives Congress within the last two weeks.

The Ondo PDP also carpeted the move by its leaders in the Ilaje local government area to work for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the APC ahead of the polls.

The spokesman for the party, Kennedy Peretei, who spoke in a telephone interview, said it was understandable for its Ilaje leaders to want to work for their son, Governor Aiyedatiwa.

Peretei stated that the party was on course in its mission to defeat the ruling APC.

He said the PDP has a greater advantage at winning the polls.

He said: “The day Alabi said he left our party, we received more than 200 APC members in Ayede Ogbese that left the APC. APC members in Ondo East and Ondo West also joined our party.

“There are a lot of people leaving the APC because of too much hunger and they are saying APC leaders have not lived up to expectations.

“The PDP is still going to have an advantage. No big deal about the Ilaje PDP leaders going to join Aiyedatiwa. It is logical they will want an Ilaje man as Governor.

“That will not dampen our chances of winning the election. We cannot lose sleep over the people that are leaving. The people are behind us in this election.”

PDP governors seek political solution to Rivers logjam

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday called for a political solution to the protracted crisis rocking Rivers State.

Governors on the platform of the major opposition party also renewed PDP’s bid for power shift in 2027, urging other leaders to work for its return to power at the centre.

The governors who met in Enugu, capital of Enugu State, under the aegis of the PDP Governors’ Forum, reiterated their support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who is locked in a lingering feud with his predecessor,  Nyesom Wike, Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had proposed a political solution to the Rivers logjam. But the peace deal was not totally implemented as Fubara later pointed out that the proposals were not legal.

The battle of supremacy has shifted to the court where the three-member House of Assembly, led by Victor Oko-Jumbo,  and the 27 lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, are making claims and counter-claims.

The Fubara/Wike rift was on the agenda of the Enugu meeting, apart from other critical national issues, the crisis in the PDP and its proposed national Congress.

At the meeting hosted by Governor Peter Mbah were Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State),  Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Umo Eno  Akwa-Ibom), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Agbu Kefas (Taraba) and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara States), Ahmed Fintiri (Adamawa),  and Douye Diri (Bayelsa).

Mohammed, Chairman of the forum, who read thd resolutions at the Government House, Enugu, said the governors have resolved to resolve the Rivers logjam without further rancour.

He said: “The forum notes the crisis in Rivers State PDP  and commits to supporting the governor of Rivers State and also resolved that the issue be solved through political solution and other measures.

“All the leaders and organs of the party will be committed so that we can go together and resolve this issue with minimal pressure and without rancour”.

The governors expressed support for what they described as the efficacy of the local government system and the import of bringing governance closer to the people as provided in the constitution.

They vowed to support the local government autonomy as enshrined in the constitution.

The resolutions reads:”In the spirit of the founding fathers of our great party, who adopted internal democracy as fundamental principle, which our party was built, the congresses leading to the election of our leaders at the various tiers must be all inclusive, transparent and must confine with the constitution of our party.

“We must ensure the successful conduct of congresses across the 36 states of the federation and the federal capital territory.

“In the off season elections in Edo and Ondo, we admonish  all the parties to ensure that the elections and campaigns are issue- based, violence free and in strict compliance with the Electoral Act.

“The forum urges the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  to provide a level playing field, transparent, fair elections as any act of bias will be totally rejected.

“The forum urges Mr President to show leadership as a true democrat by refraining or making any statement suggestive of political interference in the entire process.

“On the economy, the forum notes with dismay and great concern, the mismanagement of the economy by the APC led federal government.

“On minimum wage, the minimum wage negotiations are becoming unduly protracted. In view of the attendant hardship on the people, we have resolved that the labour demand on salary increase is justified and therefore commands the total support of the forum.

“While the forum fully support labour in their demand, agreement and consideration must be made in the ability to pay between the federal government, state government and third tier of government

“While negotiations are ongoing, we appeal for restrain in utterances and actions that could lead to the complete breakdown of the law and order and the collapse of the economy.

“The forum believes in the efficacy of the local government system which ensures that governance is brought to the people as provided in the constitution.  The forum will continue to support the autonomy of the local government as enshrined in the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

“The forum regrets that 16 years of growth and tremendous development of the country under the PDP led government, during which the country witnessed single digit inflation, the establishment of the existing anti-corruption institutions, and higher standard of living for every Nigerian, has been eroded during the lifespan of the lackluster APC led federal government.

“The forum identifies with the Nigerian populace in these troubling times and promises to bring back the old good days of low inflation rate, affordable food, fuel and transportation, steady FDI inflows, resulting in high naira value and create equality of human life as recorded.

“The forum commended the governors of the PDP controlled states for their innovative approaches to governance in many fields especially infrastructure, education, health, women and youth initiatives and timely delivery of developmental projects across the country.

“The forum called on all Nigerians to refrain from any anarchy as we march towards the return of the PDP to power in 2027”.

PDP will bounce back in 2027, say governors

The forum vowed to reclaim leadership positions occupied by other political parties in 2027.

Governor Mohammed said the Enugu meeting underscored the intention of the governors to showcase their perseverance.

He said: “Today, we are here to unify ourselves, discuss issues that affect the party and various matters within ourselves.

“Our agenda will go through governance across party administration, discuss inter-party affair, congress and other things we need to do in providing credible alternative to Nigerians.”

Mohammed said the assessment undertaken by the governors, the National Working Committee (NWC) and other party organs showed that Nigeria was drifting toward anarchy.

He said PDP would not allow the country to drift because it shared an aspiration for a better future.

Reiterating the party’s agenda for power shift, Mohammed said:“It is high time the party reclaimed its leadership position in all the states that are currently being occupied by other parties.”

The court adjourned the matter to July 19 for the motion on notice already filed.
