Ondo 2024: Losing November poll will end PDP’s existence, says chairman

The chairman of the Ondo state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tola Alabere, has said that the party would cease to exist if it loses the forthcoming November governorship election in the state.

Alabere stated that the majority of members might not remain in the party if the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious.

He charged youths of the party to work selflessly and tirelessly for the party’s victory at the polls.

Alabere, however, said the PDP would emerge victorious in the November 16 governorship election if the youths go out to canvass for votes.

The Ondo PDP chairman spoke at the inauguration of the PDP Youth Directorate in Akure, the state capital.

Alabere said the attitude of some of the youths, who compromised at the polling unit, led to the loss of elections in the past.

He said: “I am happy because I never knew we still have a large number of youths in the PDP. If youths are given the opportunity they will perform. We have special youths in PDP, we don’t breed rogues as PDP youths.

“You have to go out and canvass for the PDP. The PDP is the only party that can deliver the country. When you work, you will be rewarded. This election is a must-win for us. If we fail, that will be the end of the PDP in Ondo State. The majority may not remain in the PDP. So I want to plead with you, that this is your time. It is the level of commitment you put to it that will determine it. Let us return to our wards and unit to canvass the people.

“This attitude of collecting money to compromise at the polling unit must stop. If we commit ourselves we will win this election. Let us change for the better.”

Ondo PDP youth leader, Victor Oguntoyinbo, vowed that the youths would work for victory at the polls.

He stated: “We are the most vibrant force and the future of this state. Our collective drive can and will reshape the political landscape of Ondo State. We are not just participants in this election; we are the architects of a new era. Our vision is clear. A prosperous Ondo State where opportunities are accessible to all, where education and healthcare are prioritized, where infrastructure supports growth, and where the youth are empowered to lead and innovate. This vision is not a distant dream; it is within our grasp, and it is our drive that will make it a reality.

“The upcoming election is a defining moment for Ondo State. The current administration has had its opportunity, and it is evident that our state needs a new direction. The PDP offers that new direction, but it is up to us to ensure that this vision is communicated effectively and embraced by the electorate. This will require relentless effort, strategic planning, and unwavering determination.”

Ebonyi PDP crisis deepens as Gov aspirant threatens to quit

The crisis rocking Ebonyi chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened with more bigwigs threatening to dump the party.

The party has been in serious crisis, which affected its chances during the 2023 general election.

After the election, many chieftains dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, as peace was being expected, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, appointed caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party.

This caused fresh crisis with many bigwigs expressing anger and threatening to dump the party if the NWC insisted.

One of the bigwigs, Christian Usulor has given the party one week to correct the anomaly failure which will make him to quit the party.

Usulor, a former governorship aspirant of the party and three-term former House of Assembly member  expressed disappointment at the continued factionalisation of the party.

He alleged that the party stakeholders rather than come together to chart a new way forward for the party after the elections have continued doing things the old way.

He claimed that the same practices and actions that caused the party’s defeat at the 2023 general election was  still being carried out by stakeholders.

He further alleged that the newly constituted Caretaker Committee of the Party has three known members of the ruling All Progressive Congress(APC).

According to him such high-handedness of the party’s Leadership as displayed in the Constitution of the Committee against the recommendations of stakeholders has caused serious disaffection and loss of confidence in the party by members across the state.

“The decision to appoint known non-party members into the Caretaker Committee has affected party cohesion, eroded members confidence in the party and caused serious dis-affection which is threatening to torpedo the efforts of right thinking members like myself who are committed to unifying the party and moving it forward in the right direction,” Usulor said.

He further accused the Caretaker Committee Chairman of being autocratic which he said is contrary to the norms and traditions of the party.

“The PDP, as the names implies, is a Democratic party where everyone is carried along in the running and operations of the party.

“But the present Caretaker Chairman in the state is anything but democratic as he has decided to jettison the advices and inputs of stakeholders and members of the party”

He lamented that as a result of the factionalisation of the party and the high-handedness of the Caretaker Committee Chairman, many members who have lost hope and interest in the prospects of the party to bounce back from the trouncing it received in the last election have started defecting to other parties.

He gave an example of one of those key stakeholders who left recently as a former member of the state House Assembly, Mrs Ngọzi Eziulo, who recently defected with thousands of her supporters.

He warned that many other stakeholders and members are still gearing up to officially defect if the factions in the party do not come together quickly to unite the party.

Usulor, Scion of the Late Senator Usulor, therefore gave the party a one week ultimatum to put the party in order or he will have no choice than to also leave the party with his teeming supporters.

“I hereby give the party a one week ultimatum to to correct the anomalies in our great party in the state or else I will also leave the party with my supporter,” he added.

Adamawa council poll: PDP to field mixed gender for chairman, vice chairman positions

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State said it is set for a gender mix between chairman and vice chairman for every local government area for the proposed council poll.

The Adamawa Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) scheduled the election for July 13.

Adamawa PDP chairman, Barr Tahir Shehu, said in an interview in Yola that a male chairmanship candidate of the party will nominate a female as running mate for the election while any woman who may be standing for the election as chairperson will nominate a man to run with her.

“By the grace of God, all LGAs that will be won by our party will have mixed gender in the positions of chairman and vice chairman,” the PDP chairman said.

The Nation reports the  decision was prompted by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri who asked the party to pair male and female members for the positions of chairman and vice chairman for all the 21 local government areas.

“PDP is a gender-sensitive party. To start with, our deputy governor is a woman. We recognize that women generally are honest and committed to what they do,” the PDP chairman said.

He said women who usually outnumber men when it comes to voting during elections, among other things, should be appreciated for their worth.

“We have every reason to encourage women for positions of leadership, and we have women of capacity all around us,” he said, adding that as a party, the PDP would work with candidates to ensure the planned gender pairing.

“We will see to it that where a man is going for chairman, he nominates a woman to go with him, and where a woman competes for the position of chairperson, she nominates a male running mate,” he said.

I’ll resist attempts to sideline me from PDP congresses, says Fayose

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has accused some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of ganging up against him ahead of the party congresses.

Fayose said the gang up against him and his supporters, aimed to deliberately sideline them in the PDP leadership structures, would be resisted.

The former governor spoke during a meeting with members of his Osoko Political Assembly (OPA) in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, called on party leaders to stop the blackmail against him over his support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Biodun Oyebanji.

Fayose also dismissed insinuations that he had dumped the PDP for the APC, saying he only supported President Tinubu based on principle.

He said: “I have no apology for anyone over my decision to support President Tinubu. Asiwaju remains our kinsman and, to the best of my knowledge, he is doing his best for the country.

“Some of our people will go a little further and blackmail me that Governor Biodun Oyebanji is always coming to meet me, some will say I have soft spot for the governor. But one thing I will say is that I have gone beyond politics of bitterness that I will destroy people just because I want to take their position or my party, you won’t find me there.

“When we get to an election year, we will slug it out but, so far so good, Governor Oyebanji is trying, he is uniting the state because without peace you can’t do anything. If someone (governor) comes to my house 13 times, will I say he should go out of my house? It is not possible.

“When the other former governors were in the office, we were all fighting each other but Oyebanji has shown a kind of politics of embracing everybody. The current governor so far has done well and we can’t crucify him because this is not an election year or season.

The stakeholder made their position known during a protest letter signed by the Deputy governorship candidate of the party, Senator Paulinus Igwe Nwagu and Senator Micheal Ama Nnachi among others.

They said that it is embarrassing and worrisome that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party made a volte face and reneged on their own decision by throwing away the list submitted by the critical stakeholders of the PDP.

The leaders noted that the NWC brought out an entirely new list that featured names of members of the party who resigned from the party and declared openly as members of the APC.

They gave the names of the former members of the party as Hon. Udeh Akaji, Hon. Francis Ibiam and Hon Dave Odeh insisting that “these individuals publicly resigned from the PDP and joined the All Progressives Congress another party.

“The list also includes the name of Hon. Okoro Pascal Monday who took the party to court in suit no: FHC/CS/AI/95/2024 Between Hon Pascal Okoro and Ambassador Umar Illilya Damagun (Acting National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party) and Six Others which is still Pending at the Federal High Court, Abakaliki Division.

“It is also noteworthy that the four named individuals were not at the meeting convened by the NWC on June 4, 2024.”

They maintained that from the conduct of the PDP NWC, it was clear they were either working as undertakers for the final burial of the PDP in Ebonyi State or misguided by arch-enemies of the PDP in Ebonyi State.

The group stated that should the NWC reneges on the collectively agreed-upon list of new caretaker committee as submitted by the various local government chapters of the PDP in Ebonyi State, we may not have any other option than to resign from the PDP.

Onu alleged that Makinde and the National Organising Secretary of PDP, Umar Bature are responsible for the brewing leadership crisis in the Ebonyi state chapter of the PDP.

In a statement  in Abakaliki, Onu noted that the leadership crisis in Ebonyi PDP was rooted in Governor Makinde’s ambition of running for the Presidential position on the platform of the PDP in 2027.

He alleged that the shortchanging of list of caretaker committee in the state was part of the hatchet jobs which Governor Makinde has conscripted the PDP National Vice Chairman, Southeast, Ali Odefa to destroy the party in the zone.

According to Onu: “Umar Bature is disorganizing the party in Ebonyi State on the orders of Governor Seyi Makinde. On Tuesday 4th June, 2024 a statewide Stakeholders meeting was called by the NWC and party faithfuls from Ebonyi state came in their numbers to attend this meeting”.

“During the meeting, the Acting National Chairman and the National Organizing Secretary (NoS) assured attendees that any decision reached at the meeting will be implemented because all key stakeholders were aware of the meeting and anyone who knowingly absents himself will be bound by the decisions”.

“On the issue of caretaker committee, the NoS insisted that each LGA in Ebonyi State must submit a name immediately for the list to be published the following day. This was complied with and then the drama began again”.

“The NOS began to change names submitted by the stakeholders and I called him to know why. He explained that His Excellency Dr. Sam Egwu and the National Vice Chairman South East zone (who deliberately stayed away from the meeting because they had no grassroots support) have reported him to the Governors Forum where he was summoned and directed to alter the list in favour of these individuals.

“This explanation wasn’t what was agreed upon in an open meeting and the trust of members was being sacrificed for the ambition of one man that is a Governor in South West”.

The PDP chieftain also alleged that some prominent members of PDP including a former governor of the state, Senator Sam Egwu and the member representing Afikpo North and Edda Federal Constituency, Hon. Idu Igariwey were persons whose wives were leading figures in Ebonyi APC.

“These persons who are struggling to hijack the PDP in Ebonyi State are only interested in getting delegates for the next primary elections as that is their trade.

“They aren’t interested in the party winning any elections in Ebonyi. When I ran for Senate in the February 3, 2024 rerun, Ali Odefa (the National Vice Chairman South East) was in the fore-front working for APC and using his boys to file all sort of court actions against me. I wrote a petition against him to the party and that has not seen the light of day till date”.

“I have decided to come out open, because those that I have mentioned here as the enemies of PDP Ebonyi State were absent in the Stakeholders meeting and as such discussions were not held. I had intended to say it right in their presence. Their entire support structure have already collapsed into the APC”.

“I personally know that Idu directed his structure to collapse into APC and he himself is clandestinely a member of the APC. Dr. Sam Egwu’s most reliable boy who was the Ebonyi North Zonal Vice Chairman for a long time, Barr. James Onah has joined the APC and that cannot happen without Dr. Egwu’s permission.

“Ali Odefa, his brother/his wife are in the trade of holding grounds in all political parties. So, what is the basis for handing over PDP to them? It is simply selling the party for destruction.”
