Abia PDP cleansing itself of traitors –Chairman

The Chairman of Abia State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Allwell Asiforo Okere has described the departure of some members of the party in the state to other parties as the result of the party’s internal cleansing process.

This is even as the immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has assured the leadership, members of the party, and his admirers that he was not going to leave the party, contrary to rumours making the rounds in the state over his possible defection from the party.

Okere while speaking at the Ogurube Layout headquarters of the party in Umuahia, the state capital in a meeting of party’s stakeholders from the 17 local government areas of the state described the recent decamping of some of the party’s members to other political parties as the effect of an ongoing internal or self-cleansing mechanism.

The state chairman who urged members of the party to put behind what transpired during the 2023 election, leading to the loss that they suffered in the election, posited that the party would be reclaiming power from the Labour Party (LP) led government in 2027.

He called on members of the party to be united and stand firm and make sure that they would be part of the June 29, July 6, and July 13 congresses of the party, adding that those that would be part of the party’s congresses should allow internal democracy to thrive.

Former governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu who aligned with the position of the chairman of the party over the recent defection of some members, disclosed that a lot of people from other political parties have indicated interest to join the party.

Edo 2024: APC, PDP clash over alleged plot to manipulate CVR

    • It’s wrong to antagonise electoral commission – INEC

The main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are engaging in war of words over alleged  plot to manipulate the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and compromise INEC’s officials ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

Edo State APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Prince Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, a lawyer, yesterday at a news conference in Benin, alleged that the CVR by INEC, between May 28 and June 5, had been arranged to be compromised by some top officials of the electoral commission for PDP to rig the election in favour of its governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

APC also called for immediate deployment of INEC’s Head of ICT in Edo state, who was accused of working closely with a female staff member of the electoral commission in Bayelsa State.

The party said: “It has become expedient that the APC raises this alarm, and bring to the notice of well-meaning Nigerians, the ignoble plans by PDP’s leaders in Edo State to circumvent and rig the 2024 governorship election, using the CVR as a formidable platform.

“We have on good authority and from multiple sources that some gullible officials of INEC in most of the 18 local government areas of Edo State, approached the outgoing Edo State government to provide them with ‘logistics’ for the CVR. In anticipation, these unpatriotic INEC officials have promised to allow the PDP unfettered access to INEC’s data capturing machines.

“APC also found that Governor Obaseki and his Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, INEC’s former Director, Voter Education and Publicity, are working closely with the Head of INEC’s ICT unit, so that PDP can manipulate the voter registers and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

“We demand strict compliance with wards’ headquarters as INEC’s designated venues for the CVR, complete restriction of transfer of voters from neighbouring states during the CVR, and rejection of the use of Obaseki’s uniformed thugs as security during the CVR.”

Edo APC also expressed optimism that his standard bearer, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, would emerge victorious at the poll.

Reacting, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, described the  leaders of APC as confused and disgruntled people without anything to offer.

He said: “We are embarrassed that this is the quality of opposition the APC is offering in Edo State. We are interested in Edo people coming out to register during the CVR exercise. That is what governments do. Also, political parties encourage the people to come out to register, because it is the votes of the people that decide who will govern them.

“When INEC graciously decided to resume registration of voters, we were excited, and as a government, we encouraged our people to come out because we believe that it is when more people register that the government can be held accountable.

“Edo residents are satisfied with what we are doing as a government, and they will all come out to vote for us. We are not saying that INEC is totally unbiased, but it has a duty to register voters, and we will give it whatever support it needs. Edo State government has nothing to do with the manipulation of CVR.”

Nehikhare also alleged that APC’s “ignorant” members and leaders in Edo were not prepared for the governorship poll, but rabble-rousing and trying to impress their paymasters.

INEC’s Spokesman in Edo, Timidi Wariowei, in his reaction, reiterated that the electoral umpire held stakeholders’ meeting in Benin on May 16, which was attended by leaders of PDP, APC and the 14 other participating political parties.

Wariowei said: “Our doors are open. It is not good to antagonise the electoral commission, when its officials have not done anything wrong. It is not fair to INEC and its officials. This is not the way to go.

“If anyone has anything to say, the person should come to the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha. It is wrong to dish out those allegations.”

The spokesman of INEC in Edo also assured that the commission would conduct free, fair and credible governorship election in the state, while urging politicians and their supporters not to heat up the polity but to give peace a chance, as they campaign in the 192 wards of Edo.

  • PDP’s youngest presidential aspirant dumps party

PDP’s youngest presidential aspirant dumps party

The youngest People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant in the 2023 general elections, Dr. Ugochukwu Williams, has dumped the party.

The aspirant, who threw his hat in the ring for the PDP ticket at 38, stated this in a resignation letter to the Chairman of Chokoneze/Akpodim/Ife Ward of the PDP in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA of Imo State

Citing inconsistencies in the party’s recent affairs and the founding principles of “Power To The People” on which the party was founded, Williams alleged party has failed to uphold the democratic process in its dealings in recent times and adhere to the guidelines and constitution, thereby allowing certain  individuals to be more powerful than ”the constitution and entire structure of the party.

Referencing the Holy Bible, he said ‘the PDP has lost its taste’.

He stressed as the youngest presidential aspirant of the PDP in the last presidential primary,  these developments are in direct conflict with his political philosophy and expectations, leaving him constrained by a  huge moral burden to  resign his membership of the party.

Williams, however, stated that he still treasured the close working relationships he developed with several individuals in the party but he has come to the decision to leave the party after profound reflection and consultation with his close associates and supporters.

He has, however, not revealed his next line of action.

  • Rescuing PDP’s sinking ship

    Rescuing PDP’s sinking ship

    • By Yusuf Saidu Tara

Sir: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has long been a significant force in the country’s political landscape. However, recent internal conflicts and betrayals within the party have raised serious questions about its future.

The party founded in 1998, has been a major player in Nigerian politics, controlling the presidency for 16 years from 1999 to 2015. However, since its defeat in the 2015 elections by the All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP has struggled with internal divisions and power struggles.

In recent years, the party has seen a series of high-profile defections and betrayals. Some members have been accused of undermining party efforts, leaking strategic information to opponents, and acting in their own self-interest rather than for the collective good. The so called G5 Governors and their leader Nyesom Wike who openly worked against party in 2023 are undermining the efforts of the party to reposition itself to retain power come 2027.

Wike’s  romance with the ruling All Progressives Congress APC is very clear as he holds a ministerial position in the current administration.

A part from Wike and his cohorts there are other party bigwigs and members who, for personal gain, betray the party’s principles and trust. These individuals often work covertly to disrupt party activities, align with opposition forces, or sabotage electoral efforts. The impact of such actions can be devastating, leading to electoral losses, weakened leadership, and a diminished public image.

Prominent cases of such betrayal have involved key figures especially in the Southeast and South-south who, despite benefiting from the party’s platform, have either defected to rival parties or engaged in anti-party activities that weaken the PDP’s chances in last elections. This trend has led to growing frustration and calls for decisive action against these elements.

There must be a thorough investigation to identify members whose actions are detrimental to the party, followed by their expulsion. It calls for implementing stricter rules and consequences for actions that go against party interests, ensuring that loyalty and discipline are maintained.

The PDP should in her best interest foster a culture of transparency, inclusiveness, and collective decision-making to build trust and unity within the party and ensuring that leadership positions are held by individuals with a proven track record of loyalty and dedication to the party’s principles and objectives.

For the PDP, the path forward is clear but challenging.  By addressing the internal “Judases,” the PDP can rebuild its foundation, restore public confidence, and position itself as a viable alternative to the ruling APC.

The success of these efforts will depend on the willingness of party leaders to take bold and decisive actions. Only by confronting the internal saboteurs head-on can the PDP hope to avoid sinking further into political obscurity and instead, chart a course toward a more stable and successful future.

  • PDP’s tentative steps towards coalition

    PDP’s tentative steps towards coalition

After waiting and scheming for months for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to collapse under the weight of electoral and religious contradictions, the legends of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have finally decided to forge ahead with measures they should have adopted moments after they lost the 2023 presidential election. The honour of being noble losers, which the world would have accorded them last year had they reconciled themselves to their losses and put the country far ahead of their ambitions, is painfully and permanently withheld. Losing that election was galling enough. But being asked to congratulate the winner, the most sensible thing to do in the circumstance, was to them anathema. They first hid behind the curtain of their constitutional rights to litigate the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory. They had argued that it would not make sense to offer congratulations before they took their chances in the courts. In the end, the litigation process went far beyond the law; it became a bitter and acrimonious exercise to strip the victor of all legitimacy before, during and after the proceedings.

Secondly, the PDP legends, some of them nesting in other political parties, actively schemed for the abortion of the poll victory even before the electoral umpire was through with collating the results. To aid their rebellion, they had diverse champions promoting abortion, some of them former presidents emotionally invested in a different outcome other than President Tinubu, and business leaders financially invested in any outcome other than APC. Shocked to the marrow by the final results, they were unable to help themselves from perpetuating the plot to scuttle the poll by any means. Might street protests do the trick? They tried to assemble opinion leaders, activists, civil society gangs, and sundry handymen and malcontents eternally bequeathed with grudges of indeterminate origin. Somehow, no critical mass was formed. Might preemptive coup d’etat then be the needed panacea? The military were at first amused, then uncannily indifferent when the calls came for them to intervene: they sensed that the world had since changed, perhaps very fundamentally, to countenance that retrogressive measure. Besides, they were unsure that the country had not become badly fractured to make any coup both undesirable and counterproductive. It might very well spell the country’s doom.

Finally, sensing that a vocal, but largely insensitive and ignorant, public opinion dictated by Internet denizens was apathetical to the inauguration of the Tinubu presidency, the PDP legends and their champions and their bedazzled charlatans prayed for Armageddon to descend and consume the administration and hypothetically instigate a national rebirth. Month after month, they hoped for that celestial fire; but month after month, no fire fell. A few days to the administration’s one year in office, the PDP has finally reconciled itself to defeat. Having split themselves into four entities shortly before the polls, an act that was a byproduct of their political naivety and tactical incompetence, the legends and their tired champions are now grudgingly contemplating the way out of three torrid election losses and nearly nine years out of office. They had each vaingloriously regarded themselves as independently capable of taking on the APC behemoth in the last poll; now they are no longer sure of their talisman or indeed of anything. If whipping up the populace into frenzy failed to furnish them the insurrection they needed, and the courts, which they had maligned endlessly, stood pat on the law and would not gratify their lusts, there was little anyone could do to get them their hearts’ desire. They now hope that the next election would not miscarry. But it probably will miscarry for a number of reasons.

The most pertinent reason for a future PDP poll failure is their inability, nay abject unwillingness, to rethink the PDP. When that party, which was then a darling of the military, ferried ex-head of state Olusegun Obasanjo into office, it only mimicked ideology. Its real ideological mooring was tenuous and incoherent. Worse, they were unlucky to put in office a retired army general whose political and social worldview was festooned with hubris and all manner of distortions. The new president thus imbued the PDP with his private failings and weaknesses, and ensured that the baton he passed on to the next generation of national leaders was brittle and greasy. Moreover, after his eight years in office, he suddenly realised he had done little to mentor the next generation. Shorn of a unifying and inspiring ideology, and inexperienced in preparing promising leaders, the PDP quickly began to fray at the edges, and after the 2015 election, simply disintegrated. One of the PDP legends who has taken the front seat in the party today, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, is unfortunately as eclectic as they come and not too dissimilar to Chief Obasanjo in his messianic appreciation of power and superficial consideration of ideology. He has the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, a former Anambra governor and PDP legend, as his right-hand man. Alas, Mr Obi is also destitute of ideology, largely unprincipled, and an opportunistic manipulator of religion and ethnicity. How both gentlemen hope to reform and unite the PDP and then reposition it for state capture in the next three years is hard to fathom.

But there is another pertinent factor: Alhaji Atiku himself. In an interview with BBC Hausa Service last week, the former vice president laboured unconvincingly to showcase his altruism. He affirmed his disposition towards forming a political coalition against the ruling APC, belatedly accepting that had the PDP not splinter into four parts before the last poll, he would probably have won the presidency. Mr Obi had also visited Alhaji Atiku and other northern political titans like former senate president Bukola Saraki and former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido in furtherance of coalition talks. So, everything points to the possibility of a coalition of opposition parties squaring up with the APC in 2027. But there is a snag. The former vice president is obsessed with winning the presidency for himself. In the BBC interview, he, however, indicated that if the party zoned the presidency elsewhere, he would still energise the coalition to at least snatch the presidency from the APC. He predicates that ‘altruistic’ goal on the need to salvage Nigeria from the hands of an inept ruling party, thus making his new objective that of saving the country rather than actualising his personal goal of ruling it. Is he believable? Hardly, for the devil is in the detail. He indeed lied when he suggested in the interview that the PDP ordered an open primary contest for all aspirants in the last presidential election. No, he and his supporters forced the party into opening up the space, the consequences of which eventually led to their dismal 2023 performance.

In the interview, Alhaji Atiku created the impression that he would do everything to ensure that zoning was foreclosed. But if he fails, he would conversely do little to back the party’s candidate. After all, he is not averse to making his antipathy towards President Tinubu his other main and satisfying ambition. If he can’t become candidate again, let alone stand the chance of winning the presidency, he might be willing to commit significant amount of resources to unseating the object of his undiluted malice. Nevertheless, the BBC interviews and the Obi visits, including the reunions, are nothing but the first few tentative steps towards forming a formidable coalition to unseat the APC. It is still early days, however, and the variables that will form the kernel of the next polls are still crystallising. If in the end a durable coalition is formed – and this will be difficult to cobble – there is little now to suggest that a stable coalition can win a difficult and fateful presidential election in 2027.

PDP legal adviser denies $2m bribe, vows to sue media outfit, CUPP

Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has denied allegations of receiving a $2 million bribe to dismiss the sack suit against Rivers State House of Assembly members.

He also warned those spreading the accusations to retract them immediately or face legal action.

He was reacting to a report titled: “PDP Legal Adviser Allegedly Receives $2m To File A Secret Court Paper Against Sacking Of Rivers APC Lawmakers Until Fubara Is Sacked.” which was published on Thursday, May 16, 2024, in an online media outfit.

The report which was credited to a group that identified itself as the PDP Stakeholders Forum alleged that the acting national chairman of the party, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum, received the sum of $2 million along with the party’s national legal adviser.

The report further alleged that the duo revived the money on behalf of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) so that the party would allow the lawyers of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to file secret processes in court to stop the court from declaring the seats of the 27 defected Rivers State House of Assembly members who left PDP to APC vacant.

Ajibade in a letter to the online media outfit described the publication as not only misleading but also damaging, malicious, and defamatory to his character and professional integrity.

He said: “The fact that the headline or the report which alleged that I received the spurious $2 million is different from the details provided, shows clearly that it was deliberately tailored to dent my image using 247ureports and its sponsors.

“I want to state categorically here that I have no knowledge, no link, and nothing whatsoever to do with the allegation raised in your report.

“Contrary to the claims made by your report I had in January 2024, personally filed a suit on behalf of the PDP, to challenge the defection of the 27 lawmakers to APC.

“At no point have I engaged in any unethical behavior in both my private and public service throughout my more than three decades of legal practice?

“My commitment to upholding the values of the legal profession and maintaining the dignity of my family name is unwavering”, he said.

He therefore urged the Media outfit and the Coalition of United Political Parties to retract the allegations or face legal action.

“I hereby give 247ureports, Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), and its publicity secretary, Mallam Abubakar Isa, a 7-day ultimatum to retract this malicious allegation, which is not only false but also damaging to my reputation, failing which will leave me with no choice but to seek stringent legal redress.

“I trust that 247ureports, Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), and its publicity secretary, will act responsibly and retract their erroneous publication within the stipulated timeframe”, he said.

Congress: Ekiti South PDP leaders reject zoning

Some leaders of the People Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti South Senatorial District have rejected purported plans by some members of the party’s State Working Committee to zone offices ahead of the forthcoming congress.

The leaders who vehemently expressed dissatisfaction over the zoning plan cautioned the party’s leadership against any act capable of creating an unnecessary crisis in the state chapter.

This was contained in a communique issued by the stakeholders at the end of a meeting and signed by the former acting governor, Hon Diran Odeyemi, southwest PDP publicity secretary, Sanya Atofarati, Mrs Titi Akindahunsi, Chief Bade Adara, Ekiti South senatorial chairman, Chief Tijani amongst other leaders.

The communique reads in part: “The assembly of the PDP South Senatorial District leaders commended the tenacity and steadfastness of members across the district particularly in upholding the integrity of our party despite the challenges facing the party.

“We urge the state organ of the party to work in unity and in line with the extant provisions of the PDP constitution such that all efforts are geared towards the unity of members across the state than any act capable of disintegrating the party in a quest to actualize personal aspirations.

“The attempt by interested parties in the SWC to sit in judgment over matters of zoning of the states excos in which they are interested parties is condemnable.

“We believe in a healthy and democratic competition devoid of any acrimony and animosity. We therefore outrightly reject and distance the south senatorial district from the purported zoning which is pre-emptive of the State Executive Council’s decision as the highest decision-making organ in the state as enshrined in the PDP Constitution.

“We affirm our commitment to the leadership of Senator Biodun Olujimi with the conviction that all other well-meaning leaders and members will collaborate with her to achieve our common goal of raising high the PDP flag and returning the party to a winning streak in future elections”, it added.

  • We are now in full control of Rivers – PDP

We are now in full control of Rivers – PDP

Governor  Siminalayi Fubara and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are now in full control of Rivers State, the PDP has claimed.

In a statement by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary,  Debo Ologunagba in Abuja during the weekend, the PDP asserted that all the Rivers legislators who defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) have completely lost all claims to their seats while all legal considerations now favour the PDP.

According to Ologunagba, APC is only pursuing mere mirage by making unintelligent claims and trying to subvert Nigeria’s constitution in its recent statements on the vacation of seats by “former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who lost their membership of that Legislative House upon defection from the PDP.”

Ologunagba further stated: “ It is indeed pathetic for the APC to think that the facts and true import of Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to the effect that the former lawmakers have since lost their seats can be muddled and lost in litigations and lengthy press statements.

“Interestingly, in the failed bid to subvert the Constitution to give the former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly a lifeline, the APC ended up admitting the clarity of the proviso of Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in voiding their seats upon their defection.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution is clear in providing that “a member of a House of Assembly shall vacate his seat in the House if – being a person whose election to the House of Assembly was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before expiration of the period for which that House was elected:

“Provided that his membership of the latter political party is not as a result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored.”

Emphasising that all House of Assembly members who defected to the APC are now effectively mere ‘former members’, Ologunagba urged the APC and the legislators to forget any possibility of ever seeing their party taking charge of Rivers State.

“The former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, for reasons best known to them, wittingly vacated and summarily lost their seats as nothing in the proviso protects or allows them to retain their membership of the Rivers State House of Assembly after decamping from the political party upon which they were elected.

“These former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have only themselves to blame for Constitutionally vacating their seats; a course which cannot be reversed or remedied. They should admit their miscalculation and bear the inescapable consequences.

“This is especially so as the Supreme Court, in the case of Abegunde vs Ondo State House of Assembly and Others, has since clarified and affirmed the import of the proviso in Section 109(1)(g) in validating the automatic vacation of a seat by a member of a Legislative House who defected from the Party upon which he was elected into that House.

“For the umpteenth time the PDP cautions the APC to steer clear of Rivers State; it should perish the thoughts of forcefully taking over the State and stop exasperating the public space by seeking to reverse the irreversible.

“The APC should come to terms that with the vacation of seats by the former lawmakers, the quorum of the Rivers State House of Assembly will be determined by the number of the remaining lawmakers as provided by law; until a bye-election is conducted to fill the vacancies now existing in the Rivers State House of Assembly as a result of the defection by the former members,” Ologunagba asserted.

Group knocks Agboworin for allegedly disrespecting PDP Deputy N’Chair

A group within the Oyo People’s Democratic Party (PDP) “PDP Youth Initiative” has knocked member representing Ibadan South East/ North East Federal Constituency, Hon. Abass Adigun Agboworin, for allegedly insulting and disrespecting the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja.

The group said the lawmaker thought he has achieved all by being a member of the House of Representatives and decided to bite the fingers that fed him.

A statement jointly signed by President of the group, Wasiu Ojo and Secretary, Ezekiel Alao stated that behaviour of Agboworin towards  Arapaja is uncalled for.

The duo urged leaders in the Federal Constituency to call Agboworin to order and screen properly those that will represent the party in future elections, insisting they must be people who passed the Omoluabi Integrity test.

The group said: “Agboworin stands as a stark testament to the depths of ingratitude and uncouth behaviour that can plague politics.

“His ascension to power was not through merit or the will of the people, but rather through the dark machinations of a manipulated primary election in 2022. Far from being a true representative of the people, he is a puppet installed by forces with their own agendas, utterly disconnected from the needs and desires of the constituency he purports to serve.

“Instead of showing gratitude for his undeserved elevation, Agboworin has shamelessly turned his back on those who facilitated his rise, particularly his most recent effrontery in consistently insulting and disrespecting a political icon in the person of Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South).

“For Agboworin to be messing up with our leader, Alhaji Arapaja is nothing but showing Agboworin as an Ingrate for biting the finger that fed him.

“Before Agboworin started growing into thinking he would join politics, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja has gone to the House of Representatives, was a former deputy Governor in our dear state , Oyo  and he was a former Nigerian Ambassador. Currently, he is the Deputy National Chairman of the PDP . So he is a national leader.

“The question begging for answer is why the insult and the desperacy from a political neophyte like Agboworin, an Ingrate  to bring our national leader down.

“His disrespect towards figures who helped shape his political career is a testament to his character, or rather, lack thereof. Ingratitude seems to be the hallmark of his tenure, a quality wholly unbefitting of a public servant.”
