You lack moral rights to advise Tinubu on governance, group tells PDP

A pro-democracy group, The Democratic Front (TDF) on Sunday, April 28, silenced the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for arrogating to itself the magic wand to deliver the nation’s economy after plunging it into ruins for sixteen years.

Reacting to the communique issued by PDP at the end of its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the group in a statement jointly signed by its chairman, Danjuma Mohammed and Secretary Wale Adedayo said PDP is not in a position to advise President Bola Tinubu on governance.

The statement reads: “Imagine a political party that failed woefully and landed the country in its present parlous economic state now pontificating on efforts to revitalize the national economy as if they ever had any clue.

“Rather than bury their heads in shame because of the roles the former ruling party played in bringing the country to its knees, they are busy pontificating on the bold initiatives and reforms being initiated by President Bola Tinubu.”

TDF argued further that the country has still not recovered from the mindless plundering of the economy in the PDP years.

It added: “The position of the PDP calls for outright condemnation and repudiation by every well-meaning Nigerian. If the party’s NEC had limited itself to its desperate but unrealistic bid to unify the dilapidating structures of a deeply divided political party, which the PDP has become, that communique would have attracted better attention.

“The absurdity and the manner the NEC members exhibited pretentious insensitivity to the tragic consequences of their Party’s 16 years of misrule resonates with the role PDP played in hindering the growth and development of the Nigerian state.

“A political party which plundered Nigeria’s hard-earned resources and brutally squandered its national patrimony for those lengthy years is expected to display remorse and responsibility on matters of economic revitalization and statecraft.

“Who will easily forget the ring-fencing of hundreds of state-owned companies and investments through an opaque privatization process, the massive diversion of oil revenue into private foreign bank accounts as well as the unconscionable sale and concession of the Nigeria power sector to unqualified and incompetent proxy companies.

“How about the loss of public funds under an alleged doubtful and dubious petrol subsidy regime, the deliberate neglect and abandonment of public infrastructure in the face of huge revenue earnings and allocations, and the flagrant disregard for the ethics of social democracy and the rule of law under the direct supervision of three PDP administrations? All these brought the nation down to its knees and unleashed poverty and economic misery on Nigerians.

“This litany of PDP’s failures and unprecedented maladministration will remain evergreen in our collective memory as a people. So it is egregiously ridiculous that PDP NEC members will cast aspersions on President Bola Tinubu’s highly performing economic team and ask him to reverse his impressively successful economic policies.

Providing some insight into the gains of the Tinubu administration in the last few months, the group noted: “In less than a year of inception, the President’s economic team has pushed through policies that have led to increased revenue accruals into the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), better economic outlook and increased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) projection, a more stable naira against other currencies, increased foreign exchange inflows into the country.

“The prevailing security situation in the country is a testimony of how well the President has performed in ensuring the security of lives and properties since he came to power. The safe rescue of 137 school children who were kidnapped at Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State without payment of ransom, and the decline in the rate of insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings on the highways, particularly in the north, further showcases the outstanding achievements of President Bola Tinubu in the area of national security.

“We therefore urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his economic team to remain focused and refuse to be distracted by the PDP shenanigans. Only the ongoing task of laying the solid foundation for genuine economic growth and political stability in Nigeria is worth your attention.”

PDP, Otti seek justice for businessman killed by policeman in Aba

The Abia chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the governor of the state, Alex Otti have jointly called for the prosecution of Corporal Obaji Njoku, a police officer involved in the killing of Emmanuel Okocha, a businessman from Abiriba in Ohafia local government area of the state.

Okocha, a native of Abiriba, was tragically killed by Corporal Obaji during a routine stop and search operation on the bustling Aba-Owerri road, which serves as a major exit and entry route into the popular commercial city.

The incident occurred as Okocha was departing the checkpoint after receiving clearance from Obaji’s colleague, making the shooting seemingly unprovoked and unjustified.

The PDP in a statement signed by its acting spokesman and Vice Chairman Abia North, Hon. Abraham Amah, said that the party was deeply saddened by the callous act of the police personnel, describing Okocha’s death as shocking and highly unfortunate.

He said: “We commend the Abia State Police Command for their swift response in apprehending the officer responsible, Corporal Obagi Njok, and for initiating disciplinary actions against him.

“We appreciate the command’s commitment to upholding professionalism and the rule of law, as demonstrated in their handling of this unfortunate incident.

“As a party, we stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and the Abiriba community, urging for justice to be served and for measures to be put in place to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.”

In a related development, the governor of the state, Dr. Alex Otti through Professor Kenneth Kalu.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in a statement on Wednesday, April 24, said: “His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, is personally saddened by this unfortunate incident and has directed the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Kene Onwuemelie, to ensure that the Police officers involved in this unfortunate incident are duly investigated and anyone found culpable is made to face the full wrath of the law.

“Preliminary information from the Abia state police command shows that one of the Police officers involved is already in custody and would be made to go through the disciplinary process of the Police Force. If he is culpable, the officer would be sanctioned appropriately and charged in court.

“While commiserating with the immediate family of the victim and the entire people of Abiriba and the Aba community at large, the government commends the communities for heeding to the appeal not to go on protest or take laws into their hands in a display of anger over the death of Mr. Emmanuel Okocha.

“The state government wishes to assure the family and the Abiriba and Aba communities that there will be no cover-up in this matter.

“The state government would like to reassure the citizens and residents of its commitment to protecting their lives and property at all times and enjoins everyone to go about their lawful businesses without fear or hindrance.”

  • Ondo 2024: PDP’s fate rests on Mafo’s shoulders, by stakeholders

Ondo 2024: PDP’s fate rests on Mafo’s shoulders, by stakeholders

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be having its gubernatorial primary in Ondo state on Thursday, April 25.

To those who are keen observers, the PDP primary is the deciding factor as regards what becomes of the state.

Stakeholders reckon that many factors have contributed to the rot and decay in the party, but none is more immense than the party’s reward system mechanism.

Of a truth, being away from power for so long has caused weariness in party faithful with many leaving the party and some others returning at will.

They believe is time to vote for a candidate that’s capable of uniting the party and benefit from the pending implosion of the opposition party.

However, they are confident that John Ola Mafo is the one aspirant who has what it takes to win elections in the next gubernatorial poll.

Observers reckon that aside from being loved by all party members, he has friends and allies across all spheres having been around for quite some time.

According to them, his candidacy promises to reignite a spark for alliance among Ondo state elder statesmen who would see hope for the future they once had.

A statement by the media aide to Mafo, Yusuf Adebayo, noted that he has been on a statewide tour, bought his forms, and enjoys the support of powers that be outside Ondo state in the southwest, adding that supporters are confident that he will not negotiate with the ticket; a fact that can’t be said of many others in the race.

In a few days, party delegates will be saddled with an onerous task and it is to ensure PDP gets it right with their candidacy.
