In a statement in Abuja on Saturday night, Olgunagba asserted that the PDP NWC has directed that one out of the three delegates from each ward must be a woman.

The five-member of the PDP Ward Congress Electoral Committee for Ondo state are: Senator Abba Moro ( Chairman); Barrister  Nheoma Ndu (Secretary); Hon. Tom Zakari; Comrade Isaiah Makinde and Chief  David Kolawole Vaughan.

  • Rumpus in PDP over caretaker committees in states, councils

Rumpus in PDP over caretaker committees in states, councils

There is rumpus in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the setting up of caretaker committees in some states and local governments by its national leadership.

The setting of the new leadership structures in the affected states followed last week’s dissolution of their executive committees.

The affected states and local governments, according to “a special announcement” by the PDP Publicity Secretary,  Debo Ologunagba, include Rivers, Delta, Imo,  Gombe, Bayelsa, Enugu,Bauchi, Ondo, Plateau, Benue, Akwa Ibom and Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

But, rejecting the caretaker committee list for Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara described it as fake, saying that it will not stand.

The State Executive Committee of the party also criticised the list, stressing that it will continue to exercise its duties.

The caretaker committee list is dominated by loyalists of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister o Chief Nyesom Wike, to the consternation of the Fubara camp.

There is no love lost between the governor and his predecessor over partisan matters in the crisis-ridden state chapter.

Fubara spoke in Port Harcourt, the state capital,   when he kicked off the construction of Port Harcourt International Automobile Spare Parts Trading and Commercial Centre project.

He dismissed the list as the handiwork of cheap publicity seekers and agents of crisis, who should know that their imagination would not stand.

The governor explained that the national leadership of the party had met recently and agreed that states where the tenure of PDP executives had expired should continue to maintain the officers as caretakers for the next three months.

Fubara said the decision, which is awaiting the ratification of the  National Executive Council (NEC), did not suggest that new names should be added to the already existing number of officers or that any subsisting officer should be removed and replaced with a new one.

He said: “I know that a lot of you saw something flying in the social media, dailies. Let me brief you. We had a meeting, and we agreed that, not just in Rivers State, but in all the states affected, that the executive councils of PDP should be extended for three months.

“This extension is not meant to bring in new names. The extension also did not say that you are working without the authority of the governor. So, for those lists that you saw and those ones altered, I can assure you that they are not going to stand.”

Fubara added:  “For record purposes, so that you will understand, we also agreed that there is going to be a NEC meeting on the 18th of this month (April) that should ratify that decision.

“So, what you are seeing is the handiwork of desperate people who like media publicity. In fact, empty drums make loudest noise. So, don’t bother about anything. Nothing is happening.”

The governor said fear had befallen his detractors following the warning he issued that he would surprise those, who dared him, vowing to continue to make them feel restless.

Fubara said Rivers remained an important stake to protect, insisting that his administration chose the path of peace to engender progress.

He said: “You can see how restless they have been since I made just one statement, yesterday. We will continue to make them restless.

“They won’t know where we are coming from. We will also continue to hit them hard the way we hit them, yesterday. So, those of you who were worried when you saw those lists that were flying, go and rest, nothing is happening.”

Rivers PDP exco intact, says spokesman

Rivers State PDP Publicity Secretary Sydney Gbara, who echoed Fubara’s position, said the state exco is intact.

Gbara said in a statement that the list should be ignored.

The statement reads: “Let me inform our teeming members, loyalists and supporters that the list flying on the social media space is fake and should be ignored.

“For purposes of clarity, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, following the expiration of the tenure of some states, local government and ward executives had directed after a meeting of the National Working Committee, the BOT and the Governors’ Forum that the old exco members whose tenure had expired, should transform into caretaker committees without anybody being added or removed, not even those who died or resigned from the Exco should be replaced.

“On this strength, I want to state that the purported list of caretaker committees seen on social media, is concocted by enemies of the state whose stock in trade is to constantly exploit every means to mislead gullible people, causing unnecessary distractions in the State.

“The list circulating around is fake in its entirety and not in conformity with the position of the leadership of the party, hence, it should be ignored.

“The fake list in question is the handiwork of desperate empty drums, making loud noise just to infuriate our supporters and cause unnecessary anxiety in the political space. The concocted list is from enemies of the State who used looted state funds to procure it.

“We assure you, that all members of the party exco who transformed into the caretaker committees remained intact with no one added or removed as contained in the memo released by the National Secretariat of our party.

“We also encourage our teeming supporters to remain calm and continue supporting His Excellency Sir  Siminalayi Fubara,  Governor of River State and the leader of the party in the state”.

‘We will promote Rivers economic growth’

On the Port Harcourt International Automobile Spare Parts Trading and Commercial Centre project, Fubara said he was delighted to make another significant impact on strategic governance in the state.

He said the project underscored his genuine interest in the wellbeing of Rivers people and the desire to promote growth.

Fubara explained that when he assumed office, the initial partners of the project were invited, and after extensive discussion and the reasons they gave for the delay, it was decided to relieve them of the job.

He clarified that the former project partners had been paid off before GOSH Project Limited was engaged, adding that they had no reason not to deliver on schedule.

Fubara said: “We are not just coming here to kick-off the project, we want to see it completed in reality. That is what we stand for. Not coming to flag-off, and tomorrow, it doesn’t work, and it is stalled.

“We are not part of that. We are not into show business. We are not here to dance. We are here to work, and you will see it.

“We are a government that believes in the well-being and growth of our state genuinely. Not because we own any business around here, not because we have shops that we intend renting here, but we seek the growth of Rivers State.”

Fubara advised the project partners to ensure that every commitment was made for the successful delivery of the project on schedule.

He said: “We have done everything that we need to do. We have settled the initial partners who defaulted. So, you don’t have any issue going on with this project. It is a mark of our level of commitment to our dear people. The community will need your support.

“At the time that this centre will be properly put in place, it will change the economic status of this environment. People will be employed, businesses will strive, and for those of you that are landlords, you will have more tenants and you will also increase your house rents.”

In his address, the Acting Administrator of Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, Dr. Tonte Davies, said the groundbreaking signaled commencement of construction of the project to mark a significant milestone in furthering the interest and welfare of Rivers people.

He said the project, when completed, would end the era of indiscriminate conduct of auto mechanics’ activities in parts of the state.

He said: “Today’s event is very unique in the sense that it reaffirms the interest of your Government in the welfare of its citizens.

“For us in Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, the 20,000 housing units development, and now, this International Automobile Spare Parts Trading and Commercial Centre is a significant historic moment”.

The Chief Executive Officer of GOSH Projects Limited, Mr Okoh Jeff, said there are 10,000 lock-up shops, 25 banking facilities, 25 brand plaza, 50 industrial warehouses, 10,000-capacity car parks, and mega filling stations.

He said: “There are also ultramodern shopping complex, ultramodern mechanic complex, hotel facilities, export and import trading facilities, while the project will be completed in 36 months”.

Udu leaders, elders, stakeholder petition Delta PDP over purported zoning of chairmanship seat

Leaders, elders, and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Udu Local Government Area have petitioned to the party leadership in Delta, urging for intervention on purported zoning of the council chairman seat in the area.

The petition signed by Theresa Okotete, Hon. Eki Afuevure, Hon. Edwin Notoma, Mr. Ejiro Orugbo, Hon. Patrick Ariole, Chief Johnbull Asun, Comrade Lawson Oghoifo, Mr. Yakubu Dikeji, Hon. Saturday Mofoye and Chief Harrison Veta representing the ten wards respectively, cautioned against the purported plan to zone the next chairman of Udu Local Government Council to the South by some people they described as self-seeking.

They explained in the petition that Udu local government area is one and the same but the political realities of today overtly depict Udu South as over empowered and overloaded with power and positions to the detriment of the North.

“For clarity, PDP Local Government Area Chairman, Chairman, College of Leaders and Elders, Vice Chairman, College of Leaders and Elders, the commissioner and member of the State Executive Council, the Commissioner for DESOPADEC representing Ughelli South, Udu, Uvwie and Urhobos in Warri South, the board chairman, DBS Warri, the member of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, the member, Committee on Peace Building and Economic Development and other multiple EAs, SSAs and SAs appointments are all in the South but over at Udu North are only a Special Adviser, few EAs, SSAs and SAs.

“The above scenario with respect to mobilization for elections, certainly constitutes and forebodes danger, foreseeable failure and doom for the party.

“Udu North being the political arsenal and armoury of the local government area, with  more than 90,000 registered voters compared to about 40,000 votes of the South should be adequately empowered to deliver at the polls.

“The so-called purported zoning was done without recourse to the political realities of the party in Udu LGA whereby Udu South is presently over empowered with political positions at party and governmental levels.

“Zoning per se, as enshrined in the PDP constitution, is usually done to balance powers and not to concentrate power in one zone, and also it comes in when elections are not at hand; zoning of elective offices during and when elections are imminent and when aspirants have commenced vigorous consultation across the length and breadth of the LGA is awry and oppressive and not congenial for political stronghold of the party.

“Owing to the wrong timing and the bad blood already being spilt by attempting to zone some aspirants out, the party, as usual, should allow the most popular aspirant to pick the chairmanship ticket to mitigate political reprisal and vendetta in the Udu politics.

“Zoning is a meritorious exercise and should therefore commence with the leadership of the college of leaders and elders of the Udu LGA as the present situation whereby the chairman and vice chairman of the college are both from Udu South is unfair, lopsided and oppressive.

“We hereby pray the state leadership of the party to step in and do the needful by calling for order and maintenance of the status quo ante (without zoning) for now, in the interest of the Party.

“We as leaders, elders and critical party stakeholders hereby restate our pledge to the party and also have confidence that the state leadership of the party will immediately wade in to redress the lopsided and politically toxic situation being contemplated and paraded at the Udu PDP LGA. The party is supreme and it’s supremacy must be upheld over and  against any personal or group interests,” parts of the petition read.

You can’t impeach Fubara, PDP tells Rivers lawmakers

Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday told the 27 lawmakers of the House of Assembly that they lacked  the legitimacy to impeach Governor Siminilayi Fubara.

The All Progressives Congress (APC)  lawmakers had on Saturday  threatened  to  commence a fresh impeachment proceeding against the governor if he continued to allegedly breach  the 1999 Constitution  and the state laws.

The lawmakers, whose position statement was read by  Speaker  Martins Amaewhule, said: “They must not forget  that we swore an oath of allegiance to the Constitution to do the needful, including the impeachment of the governor as a last resort. So, if it becomes a last resort,  we will not hesitate to do so because no individual is bigger than Rivers State, including the governor.”

Accusing  Fubara of failing to honour  all the  truce   agreements reached at a meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, they alleged that he  has been running the state without an   approved budget.

Tinubu’s intervention in October had saved the governor from being sacked by the legislators, who are loyal to the  immediate past governor of the state and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.

But in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Sydney   Gbara, the PDP asked the lawmakers to stop disturbing the peace of the state and allow the court to determine their legitimacy.

The PDP  urged the lawmakers to address their legitimacy question in the light of Section 109 of the Constitution since they had defected to the APC.

The party   said  it was a thing of  shame that while other state Houses of Assembly were  making laws for   good governance  , the Pro-Wike   legislators  were making frantic efforts to destroy the state.

The statement partly reads: “You have several cases querying your legality in courts, why are you running away from them? You are here constituting public nuisance, engaging in  illegal assembly, taking illegal decisions and making illegal laws, knowing full well that you no longer represent your constituents.

“If you want to know what Rivers people think about you go to streets and ask questions. You are an illegal assembly and your laws are inconsequential to Rivers people.”

The PDP added that the founding fathers of the state would be crying that a group of young people had decided to be used as agents of destabilisation of their own state, the government and its people.

It  warned that posterity would not be kind to them for choosing the path of destruction rather than peace and reconciliation.

On the  claim  of non- implementation of the eight Point Peace Accord by Rivers  APC Chairman Tony Okocha, the PDP said: “Although we are not holding brief for the state government, as a party, let us  tell Tony Okocha that Governor Siminialayi Fubara has in his desire to further deepen peace in the state implemented the Peace Accord and in accordance with our laws.

“So, your attempt to try to stampede Governor Fubara into taking unconstitutional actions is like blowing hot air.”

    • Northcentral shops for Ayu’s replacement

    • Muftwang, others to present name to party before April 17

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun moves to solidify its position as the leading opposition platform and rally other parties into a coalition.

Its first critical step is to put its house in order through reconciliation and enforcement of party supremacy and discipline, a source said.

A committee set up to investigate its electoral defeat, particularly in states hitherto considered as its strongholds, is set to lay its reform before the party leadership.

Also, the Northcentral Caucus of the party has been mandated to shop for a replacement for its erstwhile National Chair, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, who had to step aside, following his suspension by his ward in Benue State.

Following his ouster, the National Deputy Chairman, Ambassador Illiya Damagum, has been acting as national chairman since March 23, 2024.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang and other party leaders from the six Northcentral states are expected to present a new national chairman to the PDP National Caucus meeting slated for Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

The caucus meeting will be trailed by the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, April 18, by the National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja.

The new national chairman would complete Ayu’s term, the party source said.

The source added: “It has taken the PDP North-Central Caucus a period of intense lobbying and consultations to prevail on the party’s National Working Committee on the need to convene a NEC meeting that would receive the zone’s nomination and approve such as substantive National Chairman to replace Ayu.”

After the approval of a replacement for Ayu, Damagum, who hails from Yobe State, would revert to his old position as Deputy National Chairman (North) as originally allocated in the party’s national zoning arrangements.

The source said there were indications that the acting chairman would not be opposed to a broad nationwide consensus being forged on the matter.

An Abuja meeting of the PDP North Central Zonal Executive Committee and state chairmen from the six states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has concluded arrangements on possible replacement.

The meeting was facilitated by one of the governors, who also reached out to many influential party leaders from other geo-political zones ahead of the forthcoming meetings at the PDP national headquarters.

The source hinted that the leaders mandated Muftwang to convene another meeting of the zonal caucus that would come up with the name of a nominee.

He said: “With the exit of the former National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, our zone was expected to produce a successor. But this was delayed. The national chairmanship is zoned to the Northcentral and the PDP constitution provides that a successor must come from the Northcentral. So, the constitution should be followed.

“We have held a series of meetings on the issue and this was also the reason state chairmen from the Northcentral met in Abuja on last Wednesday.”

The source added: “We are unanimous in seeking a credible nomination. I can confirm to you that names are being discussed; we are narrowing our selection and stakeholders will reach a conclusion on their choice before the April 18 meeting.

“We have mandated the governor (Muftwang) that he should call a caucus meeting of our zone to enable us to come up with a replacement to take the mantle from Ambassador Damagum.

“We have raised this with Governor Muftwang in our meeting. The constitution of our party needs to be followed so that our zone (Northcentral) can serve out its term. The position is for the Northcentral and we insist on taking back our position at the NEC meeting.”

Addressing reporters in Lagos, former Lagos East senatorial candidate, Nicholas Akobada, decried the recourse to lawsuit at a time the national leadership had embarked on reconciliation and healing process.

He said:” We hereby disassociate and distance ourselves from the frivolous lawsuits instituted against the leadership and organs of our party, both at the national and Lagos State levels. We see it as being mischievous and embarrassing in its entirety.

PDP preaches renewed hope at Easter

In spite of prevailing national challenges,  Nigerians must use the period of Easter celebrations to renew hope in God and the prospects of a more vibrant nation, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said.

In the party’s Easter message by the PDP National Publicity Secretary,  Mr. Debo Ologunagba,  the party also urged leaders at various levels of government to show more selflessness and empathy towards citizens.

“The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urges Nigerians to use the occasion of Easter, the festival of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to strengthen their hope in God and seek a national renewal by rekindling their love and commitment towards one another especially at this trying time.

“The party also urges Nigeria not to allow the hardship, insecurity and uncertainty pervading the nation to weaken their faith and optimism for a better nation.

“Indeed, the coming of Easter, the celebration of the triumph of life over death serves as divine reassurance of the saving grace of God in the gift of Salvation to mankind and His willingness to bring succor in any adverse situation.

“Our party urges Nigerians to reinforce the bond of unity and love by sharing with and supporting one another as this is the only way the nation can survive this perilous time.

“We also call on leaders at all levels and spheres to renew the virtue of selfless service by directing their energies principally towards the wellbeing and happiness of the people.

Chiding them for distracting the party, he said they were troublemakers causing more crises for the platform.
