Rivers PDP rejects Okocha’s proposed streetlight projecton Saro-Wiwa’s tomb

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the proposal by the state’s Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Tony Okocha, for a solar streetlight project on the tomb of the late Ogoni Environmentalist, Mr. Kenule Saro-Wiwa.

Okocha, who represents Rivers State in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), had while visiting Bane community, the hometown of Saro-Wiwa, proposed a solar streetlight and an access road to the tomb.

But the PDP in a statement signed on Friday by its Publicity Secretary, Tambari Sydney Gbara, described such a move as insulting and disrespectful to the Ogoni hero and his compatriots, who died for environmental, economic and social justice.

Sydney-Gbara said if Okocha had meant well for the Ogoni people, he would have called for the return of the Ken Memorial Art Bus seized by the Federal Government and a declaration absolving Saro-Wiwa of all allegations leveled against him.

He wondered why Tony Okocha wanted to turn the tomb of Saro-Wiwa into a place of jamboree.

He said: “We are sad that Tony Okocha has no respect for the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, that’s why he wants to turn his graveside into a place where people will organise parties and dance on the tomb of the dead.

“This shows his insensitivity to the plight of the Ogoni people and his disrespect not only for the late Ken Saro-Wiwa but also for the entire Ogoni people.”

The PDP advised Okocha to take such projects to his community and site them at the tomb of one of his late kinsmen.

Sydney-Gbara further wondered why Okocha did not propose the establishment of projects that would impact the lives of the people such as modern hospitals, provision of potable water, rural electrification, the establishment of a University of Environmental Studies or a Research centre in honour of Saro-Wiwa.

He said Okocha should have also suggested the naming of the Headquarters of the NDDC in Port Harcourt after Ken-Saro Wiwa instead of attempting to ridicule the Ogoni hero by making his tomb a place for merriment.

He said: “This proposal of his is wicked, demeaning and shameful, therefore, the PDP, calls on the federal government to remove Mr. Okocha from the NDDC Board and replace him with a more competent Rivers son, because he has shown that he knows nothing of the office he occupies and has nothing to offer the people.”

Ondo 2024: PDP needs better candidate to win – Group

A group within the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in Ondo State, ‘PDP Youths Advocates’ has said the party must present better candidate for the party to win the 2024 governorship election.

The group stated that there is need for PDP in the State to pick a candidate that will not only resonate with the masses but also find common ground with various tendencies within the party.

A statement by the Coordinator of the group, Bright Mercy, said people in the State are earnestly yearning for the party to get it right, saying the State is for PDP to win, but the party must prepare adequately by fielding a strong and better candidate.

The statement reads: “As per the timetable released by the National Working Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in a few weeks, the gubernatorial primary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for Ondo State will be conducted.

“A variety of aspirants have trumped up and have been crisscrossing the length and breadth of Ondo State, consulting leaders and Party faithfuls, seeking their support for the topmost job in the State.

“We  have to wait till March 7th, when the sale of forms kicks off, to know the pretenders and the contenders among the aspirants.

“Without prejudice to other senatorial districts, it is no longer news that almost the entirety of the party faithfuls in Ondo State have conceded the ticket to the Southern Senatorial District, in consonance with the dictates of the famed Ondo zoning formula.

“Until recently, the Southern Senatorial District prided itself as the political base and foundation of PDP in Ondo State, so one would expect quality aspirants from all parts of the district throwing their hats into the ring as far as the race is concerned.

“Sincerely, there has never been a better time for PDP to take over the State with the imminent implosion of the ruling party and the untoward hardship being witnessed across the land as a result of the poor leadership and maladministration that APC have brought to bare on governance in the State.”

Explaining various aspirants that have shown face in the coming election on the platform of the party, Mercy said nearly all of them come with one baggage or the other.

He said: “You could remember that we had just a little hitch of a particular party delegate election. That has been an eye-opener to Edo State Police Command that we should no longer see it as a party affair.

“The delegates are people with diverse interests, people with diverse behaviours, people with different attitudes and characters. So, this time around, we are going to ensure that the right thing is done and protect the lives and property of these party members.

“The Nigerian Police, Edo State Command is ready to ensure that there is a peaceful, hitch-free delegate election cutting across political parties in the state.

“The Commissioner of Police has adequately deployed officers and men for the exercise and we believe that with the number of officers, the calibre of officers he has deployed for this exercise, we are not hoping to see any form of violence or civil disobedience.

“The vigilante will not be part of the election process, be it a state election or general election. They are a state-owned security outfit, so we cannot take the risk of having them around in this kind of important assignment.”

PDP hails its governors for criticising APC govt

Main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has praised its governors for blaming the Federal Government for the challenges facing the country.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, the party reaffirmed its position that the Federal Government was overwhelmed and could not lead Nigeria well.

It claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could not justify its criticism of PDP governors who spoke against the perceived failures of the Federal Government.

According to the party, asking the governors why they have not expended vastly increased statutory allocations that came in the wake of oil subsidy withdrawal to tackle insecurity and economic hardship in various states is not justifiable.

“It is an assault on the sensibility of Nigerians that instead of charging the government it formed to live up to its billings, the APC is seeking a sordid and depraved approach to divert public attention from its failures,” PDP said.

  • You are idle, complicit spectators, APC hits back at PDP Govs

You are idle, complicit spectators, APC hits back at PDP Govs

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Sunday, February 18, took a swipe at the governors of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for asking President Bola Tinubu to resign, describing the call as “noxious executive flippancy.”

The party said the frivolous outbursts of the PDP governors, “who are blind to their constitutional responsibilities have not only become their identity but exhibited them as viciously complicit spectators in the affairs of their states and citizens”.

Reacting to the PDP ggovernor’s call on the president and the ruling party to throw in the towel in the face of the ongoing economic hardship in the country, APC national publicity secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement in Abuja on Sunday said the opposition governors rather than face their constitutional responsibilities have turned themselves into a band of doomsday vocalists.

The statement reads: “Basking in willful blindness to their constitutional responsibilities, governors elected on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a statement, yesterday, advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to “throw in the towel” if he can’t govern Nigeria anymore. This noxious executive flippancy has now become a badge of identity for these idle but viciously complicit spectators in the affairs of their states and citizens.

“A federal system like ours operates on the idea of shared, constitutionally delineated responsibilities among the three tiers of government – federal, state and local governments. Effective governance requires collaboration and coordination among all three levels to deliver the promise of democracy to all citizens. By their membership of the National Economic Council and National Council of State, governors bear a solemn duty, where possible, to proffer constructive ideas or solutions to the challenges of governance of our nation.”

Admitting that though the governors like all citizens are entitled to their opinion, Morka cautioned that such right should exercised against a standard of respectability and reasonableness.

Lampooning the PDP governors, Morka said: “Reckless utterances capable of inflaming passions and social upheaval must be avoided. Likening Nigeria to Venezuela as the PDP governors did in a recent communique, even under the prevailing challenging economic and security contexts of Nigeria, is unhelpful and smacks of unrighteous indignation.

“Rather than live up to their responsibilities as chief executive officers of Nigeria’s federating units, the PDP governors have turned themselves into a band of doomsday vocalists, raising their voices to deafening decibels intended to drown the groans of their citizens battered by their critical inertia, ineptitude and dismal performance as governors of their states.

“As the federal buck “ultimately stops” at the President’s table state buck “ultimately stops” at the governors’ table. The PDP governors’ call to the President to throw in the towel is nothing short of self-indictment.

“It is cringeworthy that the same governors that have never justified the massive federal allocations to their states, that have perennially stifled and dispossessed local government administrations of federally allocated funds are talking about “buck”.

“How can a governor of a state in utter shambles like Delta participate, barefaced, in a talk about “buck”? Has the PDP governor of Delta state even attempted to justify the over 483.57 Billion Naira federal allocation to the state in 2023? Which part or sector of Delta state bears witness to the use of that huge allocation? Delta state retirees have remained desperately pulverized by PDP’s uninterrupted reckless rule since the advent of this Republic in 1999.

“Since the buck also stops at the PDP governors’ table at the state level, they should practice what they preach by resigning from their offices rather than blaming the federal administration for their utter failure to mobilize massive resources at their disposal to improve living conditions of their people.”

The ruling party maintained that President Bola Tinubu is taking responsibility and providing solid leadership in this historic season of deep and enduring economic transformation in our country.

According to Morka, “The administration has initiated bold and far-reaching reforms that are indispensable to economic recovery, sustainable growth and prosperity. Our people are going through transient but painful difficulties that the administration is supremely determined to mitigate as these policies begin to yield the desired results.

“Nigerians deserve to live in peace and security, with access to basic social and economic amenities. Our Party and administration patience during these turbulent times as our nation soars unstoppably to firmer grounds and a more prosperous future,” Morka assured Nigerians.

  • Minister to PDP governors: focus on your electoral mandates, stop distracting Tinubu

Minister to PDP governors: focus on your electoral mandates, stop distracting Tinubu

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to face the work they were elected to do and stop distracting President Bola Tinubu.

The Minister was reacting to a statement credited to the PDP governors calling for the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the current challenges facing the country.

The minister in a statement said the president is not overwhelmed by the current challenges the country is facing, neither will he abdicate his responsibilities.

The statement which was signed by Rabiu Ibrahim Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation also accused the PDP governors of trying to intimidate the administration through back door.

The statement reads: “The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, notes the statement by the PDP Governors Forum, directing a call for resignation at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.

“The call is nothing but an attempt at distraction by people who should instead be busy supporting the President’s efforts at bringing economic relief to the Nigerian people. It is our considered view that the PDP and its Governors should not be seeking, through the back door of intimidation, what they have consistently failed to achieve by democratic means, since 2015.

“Those who could not bring transformational change when they had a lengthy chance to, should not seek to interrupt or distract those who are busy at work on the presidential vision that Nigerians elected them to implement.

“The administration of President Bola Tinubu has also, since inception, generously extended financial support to all the State Governments, regardless of partisan affiliation. In addition, the removal of the petrol subsidy—which, incidentally, was one of the main planks of the PDP presidential campaign—has swelled the revenues of all States, including the PDP States. To whom more has been given, more is therefore expected.

“The President and his administration recognise the unfinished business of revamping our national economy kickstarted by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, through programmes focused on large-scale infrastructure, social welfare, prioritizing the equipping and welfare of the military and security agencies, and reclaiming Nigeria’s strategic place in the comity of nations. Boko Haram and its affiliates, on the ascendancy in 2014/2015, have since been decimated, and similar bold gains are now being made with bandits and other criminals.

“Nigerians have not forgotten that it was the APC administration that cleared several liabilities left behind by the PDP government, such as subsidy claims by oil marketers, Paris Club Refunds, unpaid pensions, gratuities, and salary arrears owed various categories of pensioners from liquidated and existing State-Owned Enterprises.

“Major oil sector reforms that the PDP touted for years but could not deliver – passage of the PIB, new refineries, as well as the revamp of existing ones, and so on – are the very real and continuing legacies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“All of these have been accomplished without access to the oil windfall that the PDP government enjoyed for much of the time that it was in power, and also against the backdrop of the most devastating global shock since the Second World War: the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We must continue to state these facts so Nigerians will know where we are coming from, and appreciate what is being done in its full context.

“President Tinubu is not and will never be overwhelmed by the current challenges the country is facing. He will not abdicate his responsibilities.

” He will courageously continue to wrestle with the challenges and surmount them, laying a durable foundation for the new Nigeria that is emerging.

“He has also never shied away from acknowledging the pain of ongoing reforms, and has seized every opportunity to assure Nigerians that inside the pain of the reforms lie the seeds of lasting prosperity and national development.

“To the PDP Governors, let us reiterate: This is not the time for distraction. It is time instead for the rolling up of sleeves, to support and complement the hard work of the President and his administration.”
