Appeal Court sacks LP Abia lawmaker, declares PDP’s candidate winner

A Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has sacked Abia Labour Party (LP) lawmaker, Hon. Destiny Nwagwu, representing Aba North state constituency.

The Nation reports that in his reaction, Nwagwu took to the streets of Aba (Brass junction to be precise) to protest his sack after the appellate declared Aaron Uzodike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the validly elected Aba North state constituency.

It was gathered that Nwagwu’s legal team failed to prove to the court that their client was validly nominated to run for the 2023 general election, which was the reason the PDP candidate approached the Court of Appeal seeking the review of the judgement of the election petition tribunal sitting in Umuahia, the state capital, which had validated Nwagwu the winner of the seat after it dismissed the petition of Hon. Aaron.

Nwagwu and members of his team were yet to make an official comment on his loss.

Sources close to him said that he was not in the frame of mind to speak at the time of filing the report

Nwagwu also lost to Uzodike in the 2019 general election in what many have described controversial declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Nwagwu, in 2019 ran for Aba North state constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with Alex Otti as their governorship flag bearer.

Meanwhile, the camp of Uzodike and the PDP have been in a jubilant mood as his victory has further boosted the move by the PDP to take over leadership of the Abia State House of Assembly.

PDP governors confident Lawal, Mutfwang will get justice

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors yesterday reaffirmed their confidence in the judiciary despite judgments that have gone against their colleagues.

After a meeting of the PDP Governors Forum, they urged the Federal Government to prioritise the implementation of a new revenue allocation formula.

Two governors elected on the PDP platform – Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau) and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) – had their victories invalidated by the Court of Appeal, but both appealed to the Supreme Court.

A communique issued after the meeting reads in part: “The meeting reviewed the recent judgments of the Court of Appeal concerning governors of various states and noted the mixed outcomes.

“As a Forum, we once again re-state our overall confidence in the judiciary to do justice.

“We believe that the Supreme Court will do justice in the cases where we recorded temporary setbacks like Zamfara and Plateau states.

“The meeting also reviewed the off-season elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states.

“We support the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the allegation of the existence of pre-filled result sheets even before elections started in some places to ensure the confidence of the people in the electoral process.

“On the national economy, the meeting urgently requested the Federal Government to prioritise the introduction of a new revenue allocation formula that gives more money to states and local governments to enable them to meet their increased responsibilities.”

At the meeting were Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Ifeanyi Ossai (Enugu Deputy Governor), Kola Adewusi (Osun Deputy Governor), Mutfwang and Mani Mummuni (Zamfara Deputy Governor).

C/River governorship: PDP heads to Supreme Court

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River says it will contest Wednesday’s Appeal Court judgment that affirmed Gov. Bassey Otu as winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

The party’s decision to challenge Otu’s electoral victory is contained in a statement issued by its state Publicity Secretary, Mr Mike Ojisi, and made available to newsmen in Calabar on Thursday.

While urging PDP supporters to remain calm, Ojisi noted that verdict of the appellate court did not reflect the full conviction of the party’s position on the processes leading to the election.

“While we are saddened by this temporary setback, we are, however, glad that there is still room at the supreme court and this is the beauty of our judicial system and democracy.

“We kindly appeal to our teeming supporters and party faithful to remain calm, as we are still committed to seeking legal opinions and exhausting all legal means toward reclaiming our mandate,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the appeal court sitting in Lagos had, on Wednesday, affirmed the tribunal judgment which upheld Otu’s victory after dismissing the PDP candidate, Prof. Sandy Onor’s petition for lack of merit.

Meanwhile, the governor, who had earlier called for an end to further litigation on the matter, however, said that he remained unshaken by the petition against his electoral victory in the March 18 governorship poll.

Speaking on the appeal court judgment, Otu said that he believed that the people of the state overwhelmingly gave him their mandate.

He said it was time for all, irrespective of political party affiliations, to join hands with him to move the state forward.

The governor said that the affirmation of his victory by the court had given him an added impetus to serve the state and move it forward with his ‘People First’ agenda.

“The ruling of the court of appeal is a welcome development and it affirms that we were overwhelmingly voted in by the people on March 18, 2023.

“This judgment should bring an end to litigation on the outcome of the governorship election.

“For those in the opposition, especially my brother, Prof. Sandy Onor, I once again offer you a hand of friendship.

“Come and join my administration so that together, we can move our state forward and bring about dividends of democracy.

“My administration is fully re-energised to deliver on the ‘People First’ mandate, which is on track to reposition our state for effective and responsive governance,” he said.

Otu solicited for the support and patience of the people of the state, as his administration had continued to navigate the challenging times toward achieving the Cross River of his dream.

“Let me reassure all our citizens that we are working round the clock to ensure that we deliver the best governance to our people.

“It is important also to note that reparations are in top gear for a robust and successful Calabar festival, while we continue to address other socio-economic and developmental issues,” he said.

Yobe PDP lawmaker defects to APC

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker in the Yobe State House of Assembly, Lawan Musa Majakura, yesterday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The ceremony which took place at the official residence of Governor Mai Mala Buni at the Government House saw the Speaker of Yobe State House of Assembly, Chiroma Buba Mashio, the Deputy Speaker Yau Daachia and other lawmakers accompanied their colleague for the event.

Buni praised the dedication of the member to serving his constituency, emphasizing the importance of politics as a means of providing effective service to the people.

The governor expressed satisfaction with Majakura’s commitment and the notable politicians who accompanied him, indicating widespread acceptance within credible political circles.

Majakura explained that his decision to leave the PDP for the APC was motivated by the commendable efforts of Buni’s administration in bringing transformative infrastructure to his constituency.

He specifically highlighted the construction of roads, housing estates, and medical facilities that have positively impacted local communities.

He said:  “I want to join hands with you and support you in serving my constituency to improve the lives of my people. I am convinced that we can achieve more if I am on the same page with you in the APC; it will benefit the people of my constituency better.”

Speaker Mashio lauded Majakura’s outstanding commitment to representing the interests of his constituents.

“This defection is as an advantage to the APC and the government of Yobe State. I am  optimistic  about the positive impact Majakura’s move would have on the party and the state’s governance landscape,” he said.

Though the former Speaker had challenged the victory of Majakura at the tribunal, he could not get his prayers as the tribunal ruled against his petition declaring Majakura as being validly elected and returned as member of Nguru II constituency.

With the defection of Majak ura to the APC, only Sadiq Yahaya representing Bade Central State Constituency is now left in the opposition PDP out of the 23 members in the House.

    • Shehu Sani: it will be like Ferrari engine in Peugeot

The Labour Party (LP) has said it is not in talks with main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a merger to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power.

LP’s National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh said this in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had called for a merger of the opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections to oust the ruling party from power.

Abubakar, who was PDP’s presidential candidate in the February 25 election, said only a merger could remove the APC from power.

But Ifoh said the LP had not even reviewed this year’s presidential election.

The statement reads: “Kindly disregard the sensational news making the rounds which suggests that Labour Party is working out a merger arrangement with any other political party. It is purely a news item twisted and sensationalised by a section of the media to embarrass the LP.

“…In my reaction, I said that it was only a proposal and every Nigerian should be interested in making democracy work in Nigeria and that what we have presently is an autocracy. There was nowhere in the response that the purported merger between LP and PDP was mentioned.

“The Labour Party has just concluded the 2023 general election episode and a post mortem is yet to hold. Therefore, the way forward for the party has not been discussed. When we do, Nigerians will be properly informed.”

Reacting to Atiku’s proposal, the National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Alhaji AbdulRazaq AbdulSalam, said: “NNPP is an independent political group. As such, we stand firm in our commitment to respect all political parties and refuse to engage in merging with any party to combat another.

“Our party values inclusivity and maintains a non-partisan approach.

“It is crucial to note that those engaging in the merger talk have been expelled from NNPP, and the party currently faces internal conflicts pending court resolution.

“Until proven otherwise, these internal matters take precedence.”

Also, erstwhile Kaduna Central senator and rights activist, Shehu Sani, described the likely merger of the PDP with the LP as fixing a Ferrari engine into a Peugeot vehicle.

In a tweet via his X (formerly Twitter) yesterday, he wrote: “Merging PDP with the young, agile, and restless Labour (Party) supporters will be like fixing a Ferrari engine into a Peugeot.”
