Mass exodus hits Ebonyi PDP as Deputy Speaker, others resigns

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Ebonyi State chapter has continued to suffer more massive defection of major stakeholders with the immediate former Speaker Odefa Obasi Odefa the latest to jump ship.

Odefa with other stakeholders from his Onicha East constituency resigned their membership of the party.

Odefa tendered his resignation letter to the Chairman of his Ogudu Okwor Ward, Oshiri community in the local government.

On Wednesday he confirmed his defection to journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital.

He was flanked by other bigwigs of PDP and Labour Party(LP) in the local government who all announced their resignation of the membership of their political parties.

They include: PDP Chairman of Ugwu Oshiri Ward, PDP Chairman of Okpuzor/ Ukawu Ward, PDP Chairman Ebyia Oshiri Ward, PDP Chairman Abaomege Ward, PDP Chairman Ishinkwo/Ukawu Ward, PDP Chairman Ogudu Okwor Ward Oshiri, Odefa Ogbu Odefa Coordinator of Chukwuma Odii campaign organization in Onicha local government area, former Labour Party Chairman of Onicha local government, Hon. Chinedu Nwokposi, Dr. Pius Okoro a key stakeholder of PDP in Onicha local government and many others.

Odefa’s resignation letter reads: “After a robust discussion with my family and associates, I have decided to resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP).

“In considering the decision, I am satisfied that I have given my best to the party and as well thank the party for the chance to serve while I was in the party. I wish you well and thank you so much”.

He noted that on Monday this week, all the ward executives of PDP in Onicha local government and Onicha East state constituency where he represented in the House of Assembly for third term resigned en mass.

“The implication of that is that there is nothing like PDP executives or functional executives in the entire Onicha East which comprises of Oshiri, Ukawu, Abaomege and Ishinkwo communities,” he stated.

Odefa and the PDP/LP bigwigs di not disclose the party they will be joining but it was gathered that they will likely join the ruling All Progressive Congress(APC).

Odefa, whose younger brother is the National Vice Chairman of PDP, South East, said the National Vice Chairman was free to remain in PDP.

“Yes, my younger brother is a major stakeholder, not just a major stakeholder. He is the National Vice Chairman of PDP all over south east. But in our family, we are very mature people. We may have different opinions and we respect each others opinions and feelings.

“People in the same family, even people from the same mother and father can be in different parties, politics is different from family. When it comes to politics, we we do politics, when it comes to family, we do family.

“We are all old and matured, none of us is less than 50 years, all of us are all grown up and married with children. So, we have no problem with that at all,” he said.

PDP will win Kogi, Imo, retain Bayelsa, party boasts

The People Democratic Party (PDP) has boasted that its candidates will win the governorship election in Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo States.

At an interactive session with reporters yesterday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) do not stand a chance in the three states.

Ologunagba said: “Our candidates are standing strong with the people and we are sure of coasting to victory on Saturday in the three states. The signals are all there for everyone to see.

“In Kogi, we have a very popular candidate, Senator Dino Melaye, whose popularity has rendered the APC candidate, Usman Ododo, practically mute.

“The APC is now jittery and in mortal fear of the PDP. Only this morning, the APC-led Kogi State Government denied our party the use of the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja for our campaign grand finale scheduled for Thursday.

“In Bayelsa, our party is standing strong with the overwhelming popularity of Governor Douye Diri, whose achievements have earned him the support of the people and sobriquet, ‘the Miracle Governor’.”

He said: “The APC candidate, Timipre Sylva, has no fighting chance in the face of the more popular candidate of the PDP. He has no message. The APC is practically dead in Bayelsa and cannot win in any local government in the state.

“We are set to win overwhelmingly in Imo State because of the acceptability of our party and our candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu among the people. He is an accessible, grassroots politician, humane, understands and connects to the suffering of the people. He has always won elections through popular vote and he will win on Saturday.

“In contrast, the candidate of the APC, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has never won any election. He has always been disconnected from the people. In this election, no matter the shenanigans by Gov Uzodinma and APC, defeat stares them in the face

Gov. Uzodinma cannot win in any polling unit in a free and fair election in Imo State. He has no organic support in any part of the state, including his home zone, Orlu.”

    • Reveals plot by LP to cause mayhem in Abia

Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has congratulated Col. Austin Akobundu, the party’s senatorial candidate in Abia Central Senatorial Zone, on his victory at the Appeal Court.

This is even as the PDP said it has uncovered plot by the Labour Party (LP) to cause mayhem in the state, following the removal of its candidate, Darlington Nwokocha, who was the Senate Minority Chief Whip before the judgment that saw Akobundu defeat him.

Nwokocha of LP was declared the winner of the Abia Central Senatorial election following the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election. This led to a petition by Akobundu at the Abia State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, which equally upheld the election of Nwokocha.

Dissatisfied with the judgment of the tribunal, Akobundu appealed the judgment of the lower court at the Court of Appeal, which vacated the judgment of the tribunal and pronounced Akobundu as the authentic winner of the Abia Central Senatorial Zone election.

Elder Abraham Amah, Abia PDP Vice Chairman/Acting State Publicity Secretary, said his party has come across two disturbing documents with one of the documents in circulation on social media from the Labour Party in Ikwuano, calling on its members to a solidarity rally in black clothes to protest the judgement of the Court of Appeal.

According to Amah, “this is unheard of in the history of our democracy that a political party will call its members to protest the judgment of a court.

“Another document is the news conference addressed by the Chairman of Abia Labour Party, Mr. Cheeky Igara, wherein he assumed the position of Judge Extraordinaire to lecture ‘Abians’, Nigerians and the press on why the judgment of a validly constituted court should not stand because a member of his party was removed from office.

Amah said it is extremely disturbing to hear the Abia LP Chairman refer to a judgement of a court of competent jurisdiction with derogatory words like, “the rascality of the judiciary, especially muscling judgements, divisive judgements.”

He said that such actions are unbecoming of a Party to make a public declaration to reject the judgement of a court of competent and final jurisdiction and ask it to review its judgement because that is nothing but a call to anarchy.

“These infractions on the law by the Labour Party are jokes taken too far and it seems that the Labour Party is unaware of the actionable nature of their actions.

“In the first place, the Labour Party is quite ignorant of the fact that Abia PDP had 19 grounds of appeal, most of which the Labour Party could not defend against, which bother on noncompliance to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the 2022 Electoral Act as Amended. Their attempts to reduce the petition of the PDP to Section 77 of the Electoral Act is a careless and unforgivable display of ignorance.

“The Labour Party also refused to understand that a Court of Appeal had also determined that Section 77 of the Electoral Act is both a pre-election and post-election matter.

“Furthermore, the Labour Party also conveniently ignored the fact that the Court of Appeal also took cognizance of the rejected votes in some polling units which was on the petition of the PDP.”

Amah said that a more grievous display of ignorance is the inability of the Labour Party to provide a copy of the judgement to members of the Press even while making wild claims of reversal in sane breathe.

Je said that it is quite unfortunate that the Labour Party would stay mute when judgements go in its favour but prefer to bully society whenever a judgement goes against it.

“Since 1999 when Nigeria returned to democracy and the 24 years it was in power in Abia State, the PDP never disobeyed any court order nor did it ever call its members out to protest the judgement of a court.

“Following these developments, the Abia PDP is compelled to alert the security agencies in Abia State of the devious plans of the Labour Party to cause a breach of the peace in the State.

“The Abia PDP has consistently said that the Labour Party in Abia State portrays itself as a reckless organisation that does not respect the laws and has the tendency to push the State into the hands of autocrats and the events of today do nothing but to validate our proposition.

“Once again, we call on the vigilant security agencies in Abia to forestall any breakdown of law and order in the State by

restraining the Labour Party from acts inimical to the peace of the State and cautioning its leadership from statements capable of causing mayhem and a breakdown of law and order in Abia.

“We also call on members of the PDP to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding even as we ask the good people of Ikwuano to call their children and wards to order and prevent them from engaging in acts that may lead to a crisis in the State.”

Bayelsa’s poverty index, evidence of PDP’s failure, says LP candidate

The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the forthcoming election in Bayelsa, Udengs Eradiri has described as alarming and disastrous the ranking of the state as the second poorest in the country, after Sokoto State in the multidimensional poverty index.

Eradiri, who spoke in Yenagoa yesterday, said Bayelsa’s poor rankings in all economic and developmental indices remained an eloquent testimony that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Douye Diri have failed the state.

The LP candidate, an engineer, said the PDP and Diri had nothing to campaign with. He added that the governor could not wrap his head around the stinking poverty in the state despite the small population of Bayelsa and huge revenue allocations from various sources.

Eradiri attributed the woes of Bayelsa to many years of cluelessness, incompetence, avarice, profligacy and anti-people policies of the PDP insisting that the current administration had no idea of how to tackle the issues.

He said: “Why is Governor Douye Diri and the PDP still campaigning for a second term? Data technology company, StatiSense, recently unveiled the Multidimensional Poverty Index of 2022 report of the National Bureau of Statistics.

“That report exposed the number of people living in multidimensional poverty in the oil-rich Niger Delta states. That report is alarming, and distressing and goes to show the failure of the PDP leadership of Bayelsa since 1999. It shows that the PDP leadership and the current government of Douye Diri diverted and squandered all our commonwealth.

Why we intervened in Wike/Fubara rift, by PDP governors

The motives driving the involvement of PDP Governors in the political conflict between Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, have been unveiled.

According to the PDP Governors Forum (PDPGF) chairman and Bauchi state governor, Bala Mohammed, the sides involved in the dispute are dedicated members of the party.

Governor Mohammed led fellow PDP governors in a meeting with Wike in Abuja on Wednesday, November 1.

Wike was a member of the forum and a friend to most if not all of the members of the PDPGF.

Bala said: “Wike is a member of our party, a jolly good fellow who is here dispensing national service to our country as a minister of the FCT.

“Because of the maturity and leadership of the minister and the intervention of Mr President, this crisis is going to be nipped in the board.

“We know the person of Wike, his contribution to politics and National development, we know his relationship and his achievements in politics. So we are not surprised that this matter is coming to an end.

“We would have waded into the matter because of our personal and inter-personal relationship that we have with him the FCT.

“But we are happy, this was resolved at the instance of the Governor’s forum which has gone to show his person.

“The importance of Rivers as an economic enclave and the kind of good leadership that Mr President is dispensing. We appreciate the person of Mr. President.”

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory revealed some information about the origins of the problem when he welcomed the group to his office and swore to keep his political system.

Wike said: “Let me thank my brothers and friends for this wonderful visit, just to appreciate Mr President for giving me this position and we will continue to work for Mr President to realise his renewed hope agenda.

“I have made it clear to everybody that I am not here for any party. I am here for the interest of Nigeria and the unity of the country. I am still a PDP member and I have never hidden my decision.

“They have talked about the crisis in Rivers state, let me tell anybody who cares that nobody can intimidate me, it does not matter whether you go and bring thugs, or you say you are Ijaw, if I want to do something I will do it. Impeachment is not a military coup. Impeachment is provided under the Constitution.

“About the rumours of money this and that, all that is rubbish, I just left office many months ago and I’m the FCT minister, which is money, but nobody can take away our political structure, no one.

“I have listened to them and for me, you cannot work and people will begin to bring enemies, those who fought you, nobody does that.

“I hear they said I gave a limit of what he can do, I want 25 per cent, these are ridiculous. I am not a political ingrate but don’t touch the political structure in Rivers state, I will not shut my eyes.

“Forget about the Obedience and the Atikus, who have lost, who felt I did not support them and those who invoke their C of O. Wike did this, Wike did that because I did not support their presidential candidates all those things I am not perturbed, I will only do what is right.

“The president is our father, he has spoken, we will see where it takes us, but no amount of propaganda. My conscience is clear: nobody can rubbish me. I am not a person you can go to social media and say all kinds of things and you go free, so be careful I can fight back.”

Bayelsa poll: PDP calls for MacIver’s arrest over alleged inciting comments

The Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Campaign Council has called on the Inspector-General of Police and Director-General of the Department of State Services to immediately invite a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joshua MacIver, for interrogation.

The chairman of the campaign council’s publicity directorate, Hon. Ayibaina Duba, in a statement issued in Yenagoa, on Monday, October 30, said that MacIver made inciting comments capable of truncating the peace of the state in a video now in circulation.

MacIver, who is running mate to his party’s governorship candidate, Timipre Sylva, was said to have made the incendiary comments during a rally in Twon-Brass on Saturday.

In the video that has gone viral on social media, the former militant leader urged the people to “throw into the sea anyone that misbehaves on November 11 and ensure the person dies.”

The PDP campaign council strongly condemned MacIver’s alleged thoughtless comment, saying it had the potential of throwing the state into anarchy before and during the November 11 governorship election.

The PDP noted that the APC leader was notorious for instigating political violence and that his comments only confirmed what Bayelsans generally know about the party’s plot to cause violence during the election.

The ruling party in the state recalled how the quasi-security outfit, Operation Famoutangbe, created when Chief Sylva was governor, in Gestapo-like manner, allegedly visited mayhem on hapless Bayelsans and political opponents in the state.

It wondered if MacIver and his party were having a dress rehearsal to again visit Famoutangbe on people of the state.

PDP said under Governor Douye Diri, peace had been fully restored in Bayelsa and the people now sleep with their eyes closed.

It stated: “But because the opposition has nothing good to offer the state, it has continued to incite violence with MacIver’s recent comments the height of the party’s desperation to seize power at all costs.

“We restate our PDP call on the security agencies to ensure the governorship poll is peaceful and devoid of interference. The security agencies should perform their professional and non-partisan roles in elections and ensure anyone that breaches the electoral process is brought to book.

“We also urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be transparent and ensure that the November poll is free, fair and credible. Election is about the ballot and not the bullets.”

Ebonyi senator, rep, others resign from PDP

The implosion of the Ebonyi chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continued at the weekend, as Senator Obinna Ogba, ex-House of Representatives member Livinus Makwe and other top stakeholders resigned from the party.

The two former National Assembly members announced their resignation in a letter dated October 27, 2023 to their ward chairmen.

Ogba represented Ebonyi Central District between 2015 and 2023, while Makwe represented Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo federal constituency from 2019 to 2023.

Also, six local government chairmen of the party announced their resignation.

They include Agbom Friday (Ezza South), Nwofe Philip Don (Izzi ), Nwobasi Ude Chizoba (Ohaozara), Chukwu Micheal (Ivo), Ifere Sunday Bright (lkwo), Ndukwe Orji Okam (Afikpo South).

Others who announced their resignation include James Alaka (State Organising Secretary), Ebeh Kingsley (Zonal Youth Leader), Uchenna Nwafor (former Zonal Auditor Southeast) and Samuel Onyeleke (Zonal Youth Leader, Ebonyi North).

Ogba in his letter said the decision to quit the PDP was personal.

“As an individual, I have made my modest contribution by working for the growth and development of PDP from ward to national level since its creation in August 1998,” he said.

The senator said the party had contributed towards the growth of his political fortunes.

“I will remain grateful to the party and its leaders from the ward, local government, state, zonal to the national level. But it is time to quit,” he added.

On his future political plans, the senator said he would make this known in future after consultation with his immediate family, political followers and associates.

Makwe said he resigned from the

party after consultation with his followers, supporters and well-wishers.

“Accordingly, I hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today, October 27, 2023.”

“The National Chairman of PDP, National Vice Chairman PDP (South East), Ebonyi State PDP

Chairman and Ivo Local Government PDP Chairman are by copies of this letter hereby accordingly notified of

    this decision.

“I wish to thank the party for the platform and opportunity given me in the past to serve our nation, especially as a member of the 9th House of Representatives.

“That is something I will always cherish. I do hope that this my resignation will be accepted in good faith by you and other members of

    the party,” he said.

The six PDP chairmen and other officers in their own signed letters said the reason for their resignation was personal.

A factional deputy governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Nwabueze Ajah, has also resigned from the party.

He said it would serve no meaningful political interest for him, political associates and supporters to hold further the membership of the Labour Party.

“The development will enable me explore other options that may accommodate my political aspirations, that of my associates as well as supporters,” he said.

But the Caretaker Chairman of Ebonyi chapter of the PDP, Augustine Nwazunku, said the party was not aware of the resignation of the heavyweights.

He alleged that they did not follow due process for resignation as enshrined in the party’s constitution.

  • PDP tottering on the brink

    PDP tottering on the brink

After losing its bid for the presidency in three consecutive election cycles, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing the challenge of resurrection and resurgence. Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI examines the woes of the former ruling and why it is not likely to get it right in the next election cycle.

Following the outcome of last Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling, the dream of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of upturning the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25, 2023, presidential election, has ended. As the court of the last resort, it means that the PDP must wait for the next four years for another bid to return to power at the centre.

After losing its bid for the presidency in three consecutive election cycles, the PDP is facing the challenge of resurrection and resurgence. From all indications, Thursday’s Supreme Court verdict is a major setback for the party; it now finds itself in a tight corner, with little room to manoeuvre.  Observers believe that it must put its house in order if it is to make any headway during the next election cycle in 2027. Following its defeat in the just concluded election, there are indications that the party stakeholders are interested in rebuilding it, to go back to its winning ways.

As victory became elusive, things fell apart within the party. For instance, the erstwhile PDP National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, who was at the centre of the crisis that undermined its performance in the recent general election, was suspended by his ward executives. He was subsequently sacked from office, after the gamble to return to power on February 25, 2023, failed. This is a signal that the rebuilding process is underway. In that development, members of Igyorov Ward, Gboko Local Government of Benue State, passed a vote of no confidence on Dr Ayu over alleged anti-party activities during the March 18, 2023, governorship and state assembly elections. The executives allege that the former national chairman did not vote during the election and that he worked for the success of his party in the election.

With last Thursday’s Supreme Court verdict, it is now inevitable for the party to get its acts together, otherwise, it stands to lose what amounts to its last strongholds, after it was dislodged from some of its erstwhile domains in the last general elections. The first step is to get a new national chairman who can rally the support of the aggrieved members and work for the repositioning of the party.

However, observers believe that reconciling the warring factions would not be an easy task because of the vested interests of the disparate groups tearing the party apart. Some of the party’s leaders complain that there are moles planted by the ruling party in some PDP state chapters. One such leader who does not want his name in print said: “I think some people are just working for the APC and pretending to be with us. These people worked for the APC during the election, after pretending to be with us all through the campaign. All because we’ve been out of power for a long time and our people are languishing for lack of patronage. Many are buffeted and demoralised. If the party must survive, there is a need for everyone to be involved.”

In the same vein, former Minister of Aviation and a chieftain of the party from Anambra State, Osita Chidoka has warned his colleagues that the party could become extinct if reforms are not made urgently. Chidoka expressed concern that the PDP lost some of its strongholds to the Labour Party (LP) in the last general election and that the PDP needs to do something to avoid going into extinction.

The former minister said: “Now, we are beginning to see that the PDP needs to be reformed. It needs to renew and reinvent itself to be able to begin to play the role of opposition, knowing full well that we have a politician as president. If the PDP doesn’t get its acts together, it will be an extinct party.”

One of the names being touted for the position is that of the former Senate president and ex-governor of Kwara State, Dr Bukola Saraki. One of his close associates and the National Coordinator of the Saraki Support Group for the 2023 presidential election, Osaro Onaiwu, has already indicated that there is a lot of pressure from the people of the North Central, urging him to come and rebuild the party. “A lot of the people in the country, particularly those from the North Central and across other zones want him to come and rebuild the party,” he was quoted as saying.

He added: “As it stands, he is the only one that can bring everyone back to the table; he is a unifying factor; the bridge between the old and the young, the South and the North. He has done it before during the reconciliation of the party; he went round the country, so he will do it if he accepts the job.”

A former presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP, Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze, has also hailed the choice of Senator Saraki to replace Dr Ayu as national chairman. In a statement, Anakwenze, however, urged the leadership of the party to pick a southern candidate if Saraki eventually emerges as the new national chairman. He said Saraki is eminently qualified to lead the party at “this crucial time and reconcile all the aggrieved members and groups within the party”.

In addition, a video that recently went viral on social media, of the former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike cooking for Saraki and a group of people suggests that the former Senate president paid a courtesy visit to the minister’s house in Abuja. There is no indication as to when the video was recorded, but it gave the impression that the former Rivers governor and Saraki enjoy a cordial relationship. Wike is the leader of a faction of the PDP that is at loggerheads with the leadership of the party headed by the former vice president and presidential flag bearer in the recent election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Those rooting for Saraki to become the party’s next national chairman may have their reasons for doing so and it may not be unconnected with calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Similarly, a source close to the Atiku camp said associates of the former vice president are pushing for former Senate president, David Mark, also from North Central like Saraki, as the next PDP chairman. The source said the Atiku camp is pushing for Mark, to assume the chairmanship of the party. He said the Atiku camp is not comfortable with the leadership of Umar Damagum who assumed the role of acting national chairman following Ayu’s suspension. He said the group perceives Damagum to be closely associated with Wike who is currently serving as minister in the Bola Tinubu-led APC government.

Meanwhile, Wike who openly supported the then APC candidate during the recent election has indicated that he would support Tinubu in the 2027 election for a second term. In an apparent reference to Atiku, he added that those who scored 2,000 in the 2023 elections (in Rivers State) would score next to nothing in 2027. The minister made the declaration while receiving leaders of the Rivers APC led by the National Vice Chairman (South-South), Victor Giadom.

The former Rivers governor also said he has no regrets about supporting President Tinubu in the last general election because he was out to ensure equity and justice. He said: “Let me say clearly and to the hearing of everyone: we owe a duty to continue to support Mr President irrespective of the political party we belong. My position is not hidden. I owe nobody no apologies that I stand firm with Tinubu. I stand for equity, fairness and justice.”

The party has itself to blame for its recent woes. During its 16-year reign, it was something of a behemoth. But, it fell from Olympian heights to an abysmal chasm, because those who called the shots within the party during those years were not interested in having a viable political platform with an enduring institutional framework. They were more interested in self-aggrandizing pursuits than the interest of the party.

Eight years after it first lost power at the centre, nothing has changed. For instance, indications are that the party lost the recent 2023 general elections because it discarded its power rotation arrangement or zoning, which ironically was one of the major reasons why it lost the presidency in 2015.

The Southeast used to be a stronghold of the party. However, its dominance in the region has been threatened by the emergence of the LP as a third force in Nigeria’s politics. The Southeast voted predominantly for the LP in the just concluded election. The region, which used to vote for the PDP in past elections chose to back the LP to protest against the injustice of giving its ticket to a northern in violation of the zoning agreement. In the same spirit, the presidential candidate of the LP in the 2023 general election, Peter  Obi, dumped the PDP before the party’s presidential primary last year when it became obvious that the party bigwigs were not prepared to zone the presidency to the South, in accordance with the zoning formula enshrined in its constitution.

Obi’s defection from the PDP to the LP turned the hitherto insignificant political platform into a party capable of making an impact at the national level. It capitalised on the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket by appealing to voters in the dominant Christian South, the Middle Belt and parts of the Northeast. Besides, its aggressive campaign appealed to the youth who appeared to be fed up with the two major parties, the APC and the PDP.

With the benefit of hindsight, the participation of Obi in the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the LP caused more damage to the PDP, than the APC, because it easily made inroads into places hitherto considered as strongholds of the main opposition party.

Besides, before the 2023 election, the PDP was hit by a gale of defections. This is primarily because the PDP has not done well as an opposition party. Since it became an opposition party in 2015, efforts to challenge the ruling APC and regain power at the centre have been hampered by a serious internal rift among its leaders over how its affairs have been handled by those who call the shots within the fold. It was such an internal rift that led to the party’s defeat once again in the recent 2023 general election.

Going by the rotation or zoning, which had been in place since the return to civil rule in 1999, it was the turn of the South to produce the party’s presidential flag bearer. The immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, who hails from Daura, Katsina State in the Northwest geopolitical zone, vacated the position after serving for the maximum two terms of four years each allowed by the constitution.

The PDP shot itself in the foot when it decided to throw its presidential ticket open to contestants from all parts of the country. It committed a blunder by reneging on the zoning principle enshrined in its constitution. This was caused by the desperation to return to power at the centre at all costs. The party was probably eyeing the kind of bulk votes from the Northwest and the Northeast that catapulted Buhari to victory in 2015 and 2019. The cash-strapped opposition party also used the no-zoning verdict to ensure that Atiku gets the ticket and bankrolls the project with his megabucks.

The emergence of Atiku as the PDP candidate in last year’s primary divided the party. The leadership crisis, which is yet to be resolved, is threatening to tear it apart. Ahead of the election, stakeholders dissipated energy trying to manage the crisis; instead of concentrating on the task ahead as a united family. Wike who came second in the party’s presidential primary was the arrowhead of the opposition against the PDP flag bearer and its leadership. He was backed by some fellow governors, including Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Samuel Ortom (Benue). Other governors, including Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta), Duoye Diri (Bayelsa), Darius Ishaku (Taraba), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa) and Godwin Obaseki (Edo) supported Atiku, while some chose to remain neutral.

The crisis was eventually narrowed down to the removal of Dr Ayu as national chairman, but the Atiku camp remained obdurate, saying invariably it doesn’t matter if both the party’s national chairman and presidential candidate come from the same region.
