Bayelsa election: PDP sympathises with APC, AIT over campaign director’s death

The Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Campaign Council has commiserated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state following the tragic boat accident that resulted in the death of the Media and Publicity Director of its campaign, Peremobowei Tukuwei.

In a statement on Friday, October 27, by the chairman of the Publicity Directorate, PDPGCC, Hon. Ayibaina Crowther Duba, the campaign council also condoled with the management and staff of the Africa Independent Television (AIT) over the loss of Tukuwei, a staff member of the media organisation.

Duba equally extended the PDPGCC condolences to the Tukuwei family of the Ndoro community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of the state, noting that the state had lost a young man with great potential.

The statement described Tukuwei as brilliant and resourceful.

The statement said: “We see how passionately he discharged his media assignments on AIT and during the APC campaigns. It is therefore painful to lose such a brilliant and intellectually sound young man.

“It is indeed sad that Peremobowei Tukuwei departed at a time when he was just beginning to flourish.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the Tukuwei family, the Africa Independent Television, and indeed the All Progressives Congress over this unfortunate incident.

“We pray that the Lord grant his family, his media and political colleagues and associates the fortitude to bear this loss.”

    • Wait till 2031, Ganduje tells opposition parties
    • Atiku, Obi courageous, say Adebayo

It was different strokes yesterday for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) on the judgment of the Supreme Court.

The parties were reacting to the apex court verdict which dismissed the appeals filed by the candidates of the PDP – Atiku Abubakar and that of the LP – Peter Obi.

The PDP and the LP expressed their disappointment with the dismissal of their appeals against the ruling of the Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC), which affirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the election.

But the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Gaduje, told the opposition parties that there would be no vacancy at the Presidential Villa until 2031.

He described the affirmation of President Tinubu by the apex court as victory for democracy.

Wait till 2031 for your ambition

Dr. Ganduje advised former vice president Atiku and one-time Anambra governor Obi to wait till 2031 to actualise their presidential ambition.

He gave the advice shortly after the Supreme Court upheld Tinubu’s victory in Abuja.

In a statement by his spokesman, Edwin Olofu, the APC chair told the two presidential candidates that there is no vacancy in the Villa until 2031.

He, however, admonished the two leaders that hope is not lost for them as they can still actualise their aspiration after eight years.

The statement reads: “This is democracy. Tinubu’s victory is another victory for democratic rule in the country. There is still room for both Obi and Atiku to actualise their presidential aspiration after the second term tenure of President Tinubu in 2031.”

Ganduje commended both Atiku and Obi for their dogged fight to extend the frontiers of our democracy and law, by taking their case to the apex court.

SDP: ruling couldn’t have been different

The candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) at the February 25 poll, Prince Adewole Adebayo, said yesterday’s verdict came as he had predicted

Adebayo’s party came sixth in the election contested by 18 parties.

Congratulating the president on his victory at the at the apex court, the lawyer-turned politician, said he and other politicians should look forward to 2027 for another elections.

Writing on his official X handle, @Pres_Adebayo, he said: “Once again, as I did when @inecnigeria declared @officialABAT duly elected as President of Nigeria, I warmly congratulate @officialABAT on his Supreme Court victory upholding the Court of Appeal judgment. I pray that neither Mr. President, nor Nigerians will regret this day. God bless Nigeria.”

He insisted that the court should not be blamed because the Supreme Court had just upheld its well-established precedent and done justice according to the laws of Nigeria.

Commending Atiku and Obi for fighting their battle up to the apex court, Adebayo however urged them to take another shot at the presidency in 2027. He said: “The courts are not to blame. Exactly as I had predicted to the letter, the Supreme Court has upheld its well established precedents and done justice according to the laws of Nigeria. Kudos to @atiku and @PeterObi. @officialABAT won. We shall vie again in 2027.”

    LP dismayed

LP National Chairman Julius Abure said his party’s was disappointed and dismayed by the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment.

Urged its supporters to be vigilant and brace for the challenges ahead, Abure said: “The leadership of LP watched as the sacred fabric of justice and good conscience was shredded today at the Supreme Court as it delivered its verdict in the case between our party’s Presidential candidate and the APC Presidential candidate.

“We are indeed very shocked and surprised that even the apex Court will toe the line of an earlier judgment in spite of all the flaws associated with the judgment delivered by the Presidential Election Appeal Tribunal.

“Having conclusively exercised our fundamental rights as gifted to us by the laws of the land, we have no other choice but to move on. We may be disappointed and dismayed by the outcome of the exercise but we have chosen to trudge on and to remain optimistic of what the future holds for the nation.

“We weep for our Institutions that cannot rise to the occasion and courageously defend democracy and the voices of our people.

“However, there are great lessons to be learnt. What transpired in Nigeria since the February 25 presidential election is a clear testament that our institutions are not working and that we may be sliding towards dictatorship.

“It is very clear that the executive has hijacked both the judiciary and the legislature. This is so unfortunate for our democracy and it is even more for the people of Nigeria.

“All what our forbearers taught us has been destroyed within a short space of time because of the unbridled ambition of a few. The founding fathers fought with their lives to achieve independence for the country.

“People lost their lives for the struggle to keep our democracy and all these years people have been struggling to achieve electoral and constitutional reforms. Regrettably, all of these efforts and struggles have been destroyed today.”

He expressed the fear that opposition parties and their members might be vilified for their actions.

He said that “persecution, intimidation, suppression and harassment of our leaders using security agencies and all other government institutions will be definitely defended.

“We are therefore calling on all our members, and the Obidient family to be vigilant and brace up for the challenges ahead. The struggle for a new Nigeria will certainly be tortuous and hard.

“Finally, we urge Nigerians not to lose hope in our Country. Though we are paying a huge price to achieve a Nigeria of our desire, we are hopeful that we will get to our destination someday because where there is a will, certainly, there will be a way. A new Nigeria is still possible.”

    Verdict disappointing, concerning, PDP laments

The PDP lamented the loss of its former presidential candidate at the apex court in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

Ologunagba described the judgment as “disappointing” and “concerning”. According to him, “the apex court has failed Nigerians”.

The PDP spokesman said the party was alarmed and gravely concerned with the decision of the highest court, saying the opposition party believed the judgment was against the express provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act 2022, the Guideline and Regulation, issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The statement reads: “The PDP is appalled by the judgment of the Supreme Court in the petition filed by the PDP and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar against the declaration of the APC and Bola Ahmed Tinubu as winners of the February 25, presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The PDP, and indeed majority of Nigerians, are alarmed, disappointed and gravely concerned with the reasoning of the Supreme Court which the PDP believes is against the express provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, the Guideline and Regulation issued by INEC under which the election was conducted.

“The PDP asserts that it is indeed a sad commentary for our democracy that the Supreme Court failed to uphold the provisions of the law. Instead, it trashed the expectation of majority of Nigerians who looked up to it as a Temple of Impartiality to deliver substantial justice in the matter having regards to the laws and facts of the case.”

He claimed that some Nigerians expected the court to uphold and defend the clear provisions of the 1999 Constitution in terms of qualification and minimum requirement for a winner to be declared in a presidential election in Nigeria.

Ologunagba was referring to the required statutory 25% of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which the apex court clarified yesterday.

The PDP statement further reads: “This judgment by the Supreme Court has evidently shaken the confidence of Nigerians in the judiciary, especially the Supreme Court as the last hope of the common man.”

The party said it however remained undeterred and charged Nigerians not to be discouraged or allow the judgment to detract from their collective quest for the entrenchment of a credible electoral system that can guarantee a government that truly derives its legitimacy from the people.

Osun govt, PDP affairs being run in private home, party chieftain alleges

A former governorship aspirant in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Prince Dotun Babayemi, has said government affairs are being run in a private residence outside Osogbo, the state capital.

Babayemi, one of the foremost leaders of PDP, said the affairs of the ruling party are also being run in the private residence.

He said the current government should recognise Osogbo as the capital by moving affairs of the state to the Governor’s Office.

The PDP chieftain, featuring on a private radio, Diamond FM, in Ilesa,  monitored by our correspondent yesterday, said: “The way they run PDP affairs in Osun is not good enough. When some aggrieved members of the party wanted to protest against an appointment, they protested at a private residence where the affairs of the party were being run.

“Those who are aggrieved are the people who are against the bad way the party is being run. They are only carrying a few people along in the running of the party in a private residence.

“It is almost a year now. I don’t think they are making any decision at the Government House. We want the government to come to Osogbo, the capital.

“I urge Governor Ademola Adeleke to seek advice from the party elders. He should bring everybody together in the party and state. In PDP, six people from Osun are members of the Board Trustees, namely ex-governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Shuibu Oyedokun, Senator Olu Alabi, Tajudeen Oladipo, Erelu Olusola Obada…What is the contribution of these elders to this government? They can’t be part of this government and things are going the way they are in the party today.”

Babayemi said he is still a member of the party, but berated its state leadership for shutting out people from the party.

When the state PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, was contacted for reaction, he did not respond to the calls. He also refused to respond to the text messages sent to his line.

Bayelsa poll: Diri will record overwhelming victory, says PDP chieftain

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa state, Engema Jumbo, has boasted that Governor Douye Diri would record an overwhelming victory in the November 11, governorship poll going by his infrastructural revolution across the state.

Jumbo, who is the Director of Centre for Youth Development in Ekeremor Local Government Area, made the assertion when Governor Diri and his campaign train hit Ekeremor Constituency 2 in continuation of their campaigns.

The PDP leader stated that the Sagbama/Ekeremor phase one road project in Bayelsa West Senatorial District, the Yenagoa/Oporoma road affecting Angiama community, the shoreline protection project at Ekeremor waterfront, and the 10-km Glory Land Drive road, among others, are significant infrastructure projects that illustrate the governor’s dedication to accelerating Bayelsa’s development.

Speaking on the chances of the PDP, Jumbo, an engineer, restated that Governor Diri would garner over 90 per cent votes of the Bayelsa voters across the eight local government areas of the state.

He stated: “I will lead other party faithful to deliver bloc votes for Governor Douye Diri in ward eight in Ekeremor constituency two and other communities in the council area.

“We appreciate the Governor for the approval and execution of link roads including the newly inaugurated pavilion in the heart of Ekeremor town to boost social economic activities. What else can we do but to deliver bloc votes for him.

“Diri remains a man to beat in the coming election. He will win overwhelmingly as the people of the state stand with him.”

Governor Douye Diri had earlier in his remarks at the campaign venue thanked the Ekeremor people for their unflinching support and promised to bring more dividends of democracy to Ekeremor communities when re-elected.

Court orders PDP to replace Anyanwu as National Secretary

An Enugu State High Court sitting in Enugu has ordered the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to replace Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.

Anyanwu is also the PDP governorship candidate for the forthcoming election in Imo State.

The order was granted following a motion on notice filed by Nwabueze Ugwu.

Ugwu was seeking the court to declare Senator Anyanwu’s seat vacant due to his current position as the candidate of the party in next month’s governorship election in Imo state.

While ruling on the motion on notice, the court compelled the defendants in the suit- the PDP national chairman, the PDP national secretary, and the national vice chairman, south-east to recognise Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the candidate recommended by the South-East Zonal Executive Committee to replace Anyanwu pending the determination of the motion on notice.

The presiding judge, Justice C.O Ajah held that the motion on notice was brought under order 38 rule 1, order 39 rule 1 of High Court rules of Enugu State 2020, supported by 23-paragraph affidavits deposed to by the applicant.

Justice Ajah ordered as follows: “That an Interim Order is hereby granted as prayed.

“That this Order will lapse after seven (7) days from today in accordance with the Rules of this Court. That the matter is adjourned to 30/10/2023 for the hearing of the Motion on Notice.”

The PDP, southeast zone, last weekend, unanimously nominated the former PDP National Youth Leader, Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the new party National Secretary.

The party’s National Vice Chairman, South-East Zone, Chief Ali Odefa, who read a communique after the meeting, had explained that the decision was to allow Senator Anyanwu to concentrate on his electioneering campaign in Imo state.

  • Supreme Court: You are under another delusion, APC tells PDP, Atiku

Supreme Court: You are under another delusion, APC tells PDP, Atiku

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is again under the delusion that its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, would prevail in his appeal at the Supreme Court.

The party was described as vain, the confidence of victory being expressed by the opposition from its appeal at the apex court, stating that Atiku and his party were heading for another round of “spectacular defeat.”

Supreme Court on Monday, October 23, reserved judgment in the appeal by Abubakar and his party against the September 6 judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) which affirmed the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the last presidential election.

A seven-member panel of the court, led by Justice John Okoro made the announcement after lawyers to parties adopted their briefs of argument and made final submissions.

Dismissing PDP’s optimism of victory at the apex court, APC national publicity secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement in Abuja on Monday trashed an earlier statement by the PDP, insisting that the opposition party is “deep in hallucination.”

Morka, a lawyer argued that “Court cases are won on the strength of cogent, credible, compelling or substantial evidence, not on hollow, implausible, capricious tales and fabrications of the kind that Atiku Abubakar dumped on the court in the guise of a “body of evidence”, evidencing nothing.

The PDP must also be thoroughly deluded to imagine that it can get through the court what it deservedly failed to get through the polls.

The governing party noted that the claim by the PDP that the election was “manipulated” against its candidate was “both ridiculous and insulting to millions of Nigerians who voted massively for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Presidential Candidate, now President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said: “The PDP and its candidate’s desperate resort to blackmail, disinformation, misinformation, and malicious falsehoods against the President and our great Party is intended to prospectively downplay what promises to be a spectacular and ignominious defeat that awaits the PDP and its nemesis of a presidential candidate.”

Imo poll: PDP raises alarm over planned police conference, retreat

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, October 23, alleged plots by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to hijack a police security conference and retreat scheduled to commence in Owerri, Imo State October 30.

The PDP, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed reservations over the choice of Owerri as a venue for the planned event.

The party’s apprehension may have stemmed from the closeness of the conference and retreat to the Imo State governorship election slated for November 11.

The event, which is being organised for senior police officers, is billed to end on November 1, some 10 days before the election.

Ologunagba called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun to either move the conference to another state or shift it until after the November 11 Imo poll, saying that the planned event was not only generating tension but also sending the wrong signals across the state.

The party spokesman further stated that it would be inappropriate to hold the conference in Imo with Governor Hope Uzodinma seeking re-election as candidate of the ruling APC in the governorship election.

The PDP said: “Our party observes that it is inappropriate and against the principle of fairness and neutrality required in a charged election situation as presently existing in Imo State for Governor Uzodinma, the candidate of the APC, to be seen as sponsoring or hosting senior Police officers at this critical period, especially being very close to the election.

“The PDP and indeed the people of Imo State are deeply concerned following boasts by prominent APC leaders to the effect that the hosting of the Police Conference will enhance their alleged plots to compromise the Police to the advantage of the APC during the election.

“Such APC leaders including those fronting for Governor Uzodinma are boasting that the hosting of the Conference in Imo State will give the Governor access to certain senior Police officers, in furtherance of APC’s alleged bid to compromise security agencies ahead of the election.

“This is more so as APC leaders have on many occasions been seen bragging that they will use security operatives to suppress the people and help the APC subvert and manipulate the electoral process in favour of Governor Uzodinma.

“While the PDP appreciates every effort to enhance security in the nation and Imo State in particular, the timing and location of the conference at this period is of grave concern and apprehension to the people of Imo State, political parties, and stakeholders in the state.

“Our party confirms that it has been receiving messages of concerns and apprehension from the people of Imo State since the announcement by the Police to host the conference in the state under Governor Uzodinma.”

The PDP cautioned that hosting the conference in Imo State under Governor Uzodinma just a few days before the election, was a recipe for crisis, stressing that it’s capable of pitching the people of Imo State against security agencies.

The party said: “Our party, therefore, urges the Acting IGP, as a highly experienced and decorated officer, to save the situation and allay the fears of the people by moving the conference to another state or to a date after the election, if it must be hosted in Imo state.

“This is especially true as the provision of security is not by conference but by intelligence and proactive law enforcement operations.

“The PDP demands that the Police must protect its image, and reaffirm its impartiality and neutrality in the election by moving the conference to another state or another date after the Imo governorship election.”

“The position of the National Secretary will be a kind of distraction to his electioneering campaign and victory at the polls.
