  • Milk and the growing ‘more’ trend

Milk and the growing ‘more’ trend

Food is a necessity across different socio-economic class; and top brands are relentlessly creating an association with it in order to gain traction, acceptance and expression in the marketplace. While that sounds like a drift, there’s likelihood that brands will continue to seek more opportunities to connect to foods, even the very unlikely ones.

Currently on top-of-mind is Peak Milk’s “PECADOMO”.

Though regularly consumed by the middle-to-upper class, milk was a clear outsider to what is generally perceived as regular meals in Nigeria. However, that changed when Peak Milk launched ‘Pecadomo’, an acronym formed from a longer phrase, ‘Peak CAN DO More’; which was designed to elevate Peak Milk not just as a component of light breakfast meals (like coffee, tea, cocoa beverage drinks and in some cases, pap and custard) but as an integral constituent of our daily meals.

Peak innovated brilliantly, elevating itself to an enviable position; and positioning itself at the centre-stage of quality nutrition.

Since the launch, Pecadomo has been a hit, cleverly helping Peak Milk re-enforce its position as a clear category leader. And as consumers continue to seek new flavours and experiences, other food and beverage brands in Nigeria began to explore innovative ways to connect their products with consumers in other ways beyond the regular pitches.

While Coca-Cola may have been the first in recent times to explore food-inspired campaigns in Nigeria, it may actually be Peak Milk that glamorized and made the practice trendy and more sustainable with the launch and successful execution of Pecadomo.

In Nigeria, consumers are quite familiar with the idea of enjoying milk with tea, pap, cornflakes, Quaker Oats and other traditional breakfast items. Lunch and dinner are usually laden with heavy doses of starch and oil, and very little of other essential nutrients like protein, fibre, vitamins and mineral that the body requires for healthy growth. Such dietary imbalance has its consequence – malnutrition.

According to a 2013 report by the Federal Ministry of Health, 41 percent of Nigerian children under age five suffer stunted growth as a result of malnutrition. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) nails it home when it disclosed that Nigeria has one of the poorest rates of milk consumption in the world.

Hence, Pecadomo was conceived as a solution to this nagging challenge, as it highlights and focuses on driving new and wider usages for Peak milk beyond the breakfast menu. It meant that regular meals like eba, semo, pounded yam, et al can be as rich in protein and other essential nutrients as they are in starch and oil. Pecadomo now becomes an invitation for consumers to explore and discover the goodness and richness of milk beyond traditional breakfast meals.

Within a year of launch, over 100 Pecadomo recipes have been conceived; which had benefited Peak Milk in terms of brand equity and market share.

This success recorded in a short time had prompted other brands in soft drink and alcoholic beverage categories to strategically aim their campaigns at foodies.

Today, we are beginning to see the emergence of celebrity chefs like Falz and AY in food-based TV shows and online digital content. While this looks like a transitory trend, a Toe-In-Water (TIW) survey reveals that it is likely to continue as more brands are expected to join the brand-wagon and consumers are becoming more health conscious.

Trust Nigerians consumers who are naturally trend-conscious, they are already jumping on Pecadomo, embracing Peak Milk as an integral part of their daily food recipes; and in the process, enjoying stronger bodies and sharper minds.

As for me, I’m not just going to watch the trend evolve, I’ll be part of the movement.

You should too, because Peak Can Do More for you. Trust me.

…As winners smile home with rewards from school cooking competition

The grounds of Lagos State Television (LTV) was agog on June 1, 2017 when over 5,000 school children gathered for the annual celebration of the global World Milk Day celebration.

This year, a cooking competition was designed to foster creativity and versatility with everyday foods using Peak Milk.

Over 150 entries were received with unique recipes. 10 schools eventually were selected by the panel of judges. Whitefield High School clinched the top spot and was awarded N500, 000 cash price. “I am very excited about this overwhelming turnout. I see excitement on the faces of the children and more importantly, they have become Peak ambassadors.” Said Ben Langat, the Managing Director of FrieslandCampina WAMCO.

Speaking further, he said: “This concept is to encourage versatility in everyday Nigerian foods that children eat and can prepare themselves. This is an evolution in terms of children coming up with their own concepts,” he continued.

“Children are very creative when it comes to recipe development and also in the multiple ways of using Peak. Hence, FrieslandCampina Wamco has provided a platform to encourage this versatility campaign which we have tagged PeCaDoMO, urging them to do more with Peak and furthermore boost the nutritional benefit in every meal with the addition of Peak.

Tarang Gupta, the Marketing Director said: “Today is World Milk Day and we are celebrating the children”. Children are the leaders of tomorrow and it is essential to cultivate them young. We are specifically educating the children by showing how Peak Milk can be used in different ways using different cooking methods because Peak milk has unrivalled value, taste and nutrition more than anything else.”

He stressed further: “I want to see each child go back home and say Mum, add Peak to my meal because it adds more nutrition to my meal.

Mrs. Adenihun Adebukunola, from Jibowu Junior High School and President, Lagos State Home Economics Teachers Association, Lagos State Chapter thinks the event is an encouragement for students to know more about Peak Milk and the many diverse ways of using it. She expects the students to showcase what they have learnt and inform others.

For Maureen Ifada, the Marketing Manager, who was visibly excited at the success of the event “Peak is the number one milk brand in Nigeria and it is strongly associated with quality. It contains adequate nutrients that provide consumers with stronger bodies and sharper minds to enable them reach their peak. So it is important that more consumers know there is much more you can do with Peak Milk” she said.

Peak Milk started with the PeCaDoMo cooking competition last year and recorded same level of participation from schools and Lagos State Government. Maureen Ifada sees it fast becoming a Pan- Nigeria project, extending this celebration to more cities across the country. Peak Milk has been celebrating World Milk Day for almost 2 decades.

    My Mum, my heart

There are women everywhere, but mothers are rare to find. Mothers are a bundle of emotions that sometimes defy reason. A mother is the best friend anyone could ever ask for. When everyone else turns away, she will always turn towards you. When you fall, she’s the one that helps you up and when your heart is filled with despair, she’s the one that gives you a glimpse of hope.

At a time when society urges women to seek their worth and personal fulfilment in things that take them away from their families, real mothers stick to their children. My mum has been there from my first breath to my first broken heart. She sees right through me and always knows what’s wrong. Then reassures everything will be alright even when she doesn’t know what went wrong.

One thing we always forget to do is tell our mothers how thankful we are for everything. On Mothers’ Day, the world sets aside one day to do what we should do every single day; tell our mums that we love them and that that will never change.

Thank you mum for teaching me how to read even before I got into school. Thank you for being always proud of me when I read to people so early in age and they marvel. Thank you for your heartache and worries to watch me disappear down the street, walking to school alone for the very first time.

    9. ABACHAThank you for crying silently when I seemed to have gone astray. Thank you for bringing me back to my senses through your love and understanding. Thank you for staying awake all night whenever I fell sick and constantly uttering those compassionate and reassuring words, “Mommy’s here.”

Thank you for making me who I am today. You were there for my first breath, I promise to be there for your last, and we will be together for everything in between.

  • Get creative; get peak

    Get creative; get peak

2017 is gradually dragging on and we are getting the full vibe of the year. At the opening of the year, many resolutions were made.
Johnbull Okafor resolved to expand his business from a tiny shop into a warehouse in order to make more money and live a better life.
Funke Williams, a manager in an advertising agency plans to set up her smoothie business in 2017. Ogbonnaya Micheal wants to relocate to Canada, Olasunkanmi Jibril is planning to enroll for a MBA programme, Bolu John wants to stop smoking and Dolapo Ojo resolved to live a healthier life by reducing her weight.
These are beautiful resolutions, but the question is how far have they gone in making that resolution a reality? That brings us to the key elements needed in making true our resolutions; and the chiefest among them is creativity.
A great intention not backed up with creative approaches might definitely fail. In January when Uche Agbaragu was planning to set up a Coffee Bar, he had to study the environment, creatively picked his location, understood the target audience and the designed the most creative way of reaching them at minimal cost. He also used influencers to draw people into the bar, and today, the business is gradually picking up. He spent half the money he would have spent if doing the business conventionally. That is the power of creativity. Less effort, more result. Less marketing, more prospects.
In any resolutions you have made, there is the need to look at the best creative approach to make it a reality, and then break the approach into simple actionable plans.
However, in order to make that sound creative decision, you need to be nourished physically and mentally; and that’s where Peak Milk comes in.
Peak Milk is strongly formulated to give stronger body and sharper mind; not just through the traditional bread and tea, but now also through #pecadomo; that is the creative way of using Peak Milk in the preparation of traditional meals like rice, pounded yam, fufu, eba, amala, semo, eggs and pap. Wow!
Using Peak Milk in the preparation of these staple foods ensure that consumers get all-round great nutrition; and that is the smartest way to a great-healthy lifestyle and fulfilled dreams. Peak Milk make the foods more nourishing, nutritious and gives the creative power needed to plan and take the future.
In the words of Tunde Abolaji, a Lagos-based nutrition and lifestyle expert, ‘a malnourished mind cannot produce great idea!’
    Go get Peak!

  • Hello Mummie: I’m a Chef

    Hello Mummie: I’m a Chef

I was alone again on my balcony and reflecting on how motherhood was reenacted during my December visit to mum’s after three years. I got deeply emotional and was prompted to compose her a love poem. Of course, Ann Taylor’s ‘My Mother’ came to mind. I picked my phone and called. Mum was quiet but I could hear her excited breathing beneath my cracked voice.

Who sat and watched my infant head

When sleeping on my cradle bed

And tears of sweet affection shed

    My mother

I continued singing, swelling up with each verse, and struggling to hold my burst.

    Until the last stanza!

When thou art feeble, old and grey

My healthy arm shall be thy sway

And I will soothe thy pains away

    My mother

Then it happened. I couldn’t hold it anymore. I lost the struggle and tears erupted, freely flowing down my cheeks, mum was crying too. It was an emotional moment I couldn’t find words to describe; the priceless feelings, the loud silence, the agelong understanding… Oh motherhood, how can I ever forget your kindness? What can I do to repay you? What have you not done for me? Thank you maami.

Mum has been a great help, a support and an inspiration to me, and I constantly seek unique opportunities to create experiences to at least, repay a portion of her kindness.

Part of what mum taught me was how to cook a good meal and I’m planning to cook for her. She has cooked for me all her life and I want to do the same for her. The fast approaching Mother’s Day is a perfect opportunity to show mum the Chef in me. I’m planning to drive from Lagos to Ilorin just to cook for her. I would buy all the ingredients here in Lagos then hit the road. No matter how tired I am, I’m going straight into the kitchen to make her one of the most nutritious and nourishing food on earth.

Well, I might have limited knowledge of recipes but you can never go wrong with pecadomo. It is the simplest and smartest form of getting nutrition; it means Peak Can Do More which is a new trend among the health-conscious Nigerians, embracing the use of Peak Milk beyond the traditional bread and tea. Peak Milk is now used in the preparation of traditional foods like eba, semo, amala, pounded yam, etal.

Even at her age, mum still needs good nutrition. As a retired nurse, she has private health consultancy business which requires sharper mind and stronger body, and pecadomo is that perfect strategy of meeting her nutritional needs as critical nutrients are situated at key culinary touchpoints.

Why Peak Milk? Peak is an iconic brand of quality nurturing generations since 1954 and produced under strict hygiene.  Peak is nutritious and enhances the mental and physical performances of consumers. So join me in the next Mothers’ Day as we show mum the Chef in You, nurturing her to health and nutrition.

This might be the simple idea to connect with mums again, sometimes, it’s not always about that expensive gift but a unique experiences that invoke emotions and create lasting impressions.

    Knock-knock-knock, Mum I’m hooome.

  • It’s time to innovate

    It’s time to innovate

Its 2017 and the world is not where it used to be. Our world has moved, edging closer to the dreaded 22nd century. It’s the freaking digital age and disruption is happening all over the world. The world’s biggest taxi company owns no single cab. World’s biggest media creates no content. The world’s largest music company signed no artiste. World’s largest telephoning company has no telco infrastructure.
The world’s largest video company owns no camera. The world’s biggest marketplace has no merchandise of its own. The world’s largest library don’t write book. The world’s largest software companies don’t write apps. The world’s largest movie house owns no cinemas! Of course, we know Uber, Facebook, iTunes, Skype, YouTube, Amazon, Google, Apple and Netflix. I wonder what lurks ahead for humanity as we approach the next century. The future is gonna be mad!
These thoughts ruled my mind as I drove towards Lagos after the wild Christmas break. My mind wandered about in quest of culinary trends in our ‘green and white’ nation. I started with ‘mixology trend’. Nigerians are getting more health-conscious and getting careful of what goes into their system. They also want to enjoy their bitter liquor though with an enhanced taste. The eating your cake and having it stuff. These and other social concerns ushered in the concept of ‘mixology’; and Coca Cola, being the always-smart-brand tapped into the trend and encouraged liquor consumers to mix, but only with Coke.
I chuckled at this thought and shared with my wife as we rode, moving closer to Lagos. Conversation ensued and shifted to smoothies, cocktails and salad; and how pundits have innovatively sold the concepts to Nigerians, leveraging the growing health consciousness.
I aired my concern on how staple ball foods have remained the same ever since and that was the trigger needed to activate something in my wife. She lectured me on a new trend in the kitchens of the young Nigerian mums; it is called ‘pecadomo’ meaning Peak Can Do More! Wow!
She said the young mums have embraced the use of Peak Milk beyond the traditional bread and tea, and Peak Milk can now be used to prepare traditional foods like eba, semo, amala, pounded yam, etal.
They are usually busy mums between ages 25-45. They are health-conscious, upwardly-mobile, and since they know that a family’s health is the mother’s scorecard, they do everything to keep their family healthy and happy.
‘Pecadomo is a great strategy of meeting the nutritional needs of every family member as critical nutrients are situated at every gastronomic touchpoints’.
     ‘Really?!’ I questioned
‘Yeah. Its about being a good mother to my kids and great wife to my hubby. Its the right thing to do in this age where we hardly have time for decent meals’. She nailed it.
I was impressed at the innovation and the quality of thinking behind pecadomo. This means that innovation is not only about creating apps or inventing drones, but also adding values to little things that matter in our lives. However to innovate, there is need for stronger body and sharper mind; and Peak Milk comes to rescue in enhancing the mental and physical performances of consumers.
So either you’re an app developer, a creative writer, recipe mixer, or content producer, always know that Peak Can Do More for you.  #pecadomo
