2017: Another chance to get it right

It was 31st of December and the time to celebrate the end of a challenging year, and maybe set a new goal for the next 365 days. Tito sat, drunk in a Surulere bar with his jolly friends, their tables filled with different kinds of alcoholic beverages. Each, narrating the challenges the year had brought and how they survived it. The conversation drifted to making plans for the incoming year. Part of the plans for Tito was to drop-down his alcoholic consumption which had consistently drained his pocket. And bla bla bla.
New resolutions have been made, with plans to embrace new attitudes. The key challenge is following the resolutions to the end. About 60% of New Year resolutions are abandoned after 1-2 months, and another 20% after 3 months. Only a meagre percentage follow through to the end of the year. The key problem is our refusal or rather ignorance to create a solid roadmap on how to actualize the resolutions. Tito and friends never did that and there are possibilities that their resolutions might fail. They might just hit the bar again the following weekend.
However, Funke, my friend had an intriguing resolution; she wants a healthier lifestyle for herself and her family. Wow! As simple as it sounds; it requires a high level of hard work. That means sound body and sound mental health which would eventually trigger long life and prosperity.
‘Interesting! So what’s your strategy?’ I asked
    ‘My key strategy is pecadomo’.
    ‘Peca what?’
‘Pecadomo’ meaning Peak Can Do More!
pecadomia7Funke is a busy mum between 25-45; health-conscious, upwardly-mobile. She knows that ‘the family’s health is the mother’s scorecard’, and will do everything to keep her family healthy and happy. Funke lectured me that young and trendy mums all over the country are embracing the use of Peak Milk beyond the traditional bread and tea, and Peak Milk is now used to prepare traditional foods like eba, semo, amala, pounded yam, et al.
‘So why Peak and not other milk brands?’ I quizzed
‘Peak is an iconic brand of great quality and pedigree, nurturing generations since 1954 and produced under strict hygiene, the company adhering strictly by international policies’
    ‘Really?!’ I was impressed.

‘Yes’. Funke preached on. ‘And Pecadomo is a great strategy of meeting the nutritional needs of every family member as critical nutrients are situated at key gastronomic touchpoints. Its the right thing to do in this age when we hardly have time for decent meals’. She nailed it.
It’s a new year and another chance to get it right. A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery.
For me, I have decided to innovate. Trying new things, learning, living, pushing myself, changing myself, changing our world; however to do that, there is need for stronger body and sharper mind; and Peak Milk is equipped to enhance my mental and physical performances; giving me sound mind and sound body.
    A wholesome health for innovation!
‘A toast to a healthier 2017’. I raised my glass of Peak smoothie to Funke.
‘Its always in you’ she replied, smiling, and clicking my cup.

    Pecadomo showcases Peak’s creativity

Peak milk, a dairy brand on the stable of Friesland Campina Wamco has successfully launched a nationwide campaign in deepening milk consumption amongst Nigerians.

The brand’s new initiative tagged Pecadomo— PEakCAn DO More and launched in Lagos recently has traversed the nooks and crannies of Nigeria in an exciting experiential brand activation in selected neighbourhoods, city centres and villages across Nigeria.

Not only that, the Peak Can Do More campaign team took the initiative to schools and markets in a drive to create a firsthand experience for target audiences on the various uses of milk.

Specifically, the campaign was taken round the country to create awareness on the various health benefits of milk vis-à-vis newer ways of using milk in different diet.

Through this innovative campaign, Peak milk has shown that it does not only taste great but can make practically every Nigerian dish taste better and increase nutritional value.

The addition of Peak Milk to everyday carbonhydrate meals like Semolina, Pounded Yam, Tuwo and Rice creates a creamier and more flavoured meal. In Mrs Folashade Obafemi‘s case, being married to a man who prefers to swallow, she learned to get creative with making Semolina by adding Peak Milk.  “Unfortunately, my husband doesn’t eat draw soup so meals were becoming boring since it is either egusi or vegetable soup. The first time I heard that Peak Milk could be added to semo, I wondered how it would taste. The texture is so creamy. Besides being high in fibre, semo made with Peak milk is also nutritious for the family.”

Compared to other milk drinking countries, consumption of milk and knowledge of what milk can be used for is very low in Nigeria. With this campaign, Milk will not only be much more fun; but Nigerians from all walks of life will come to appreciate that this highly nutritious liquid, milk is a veryversatile food accompaniment.  And this is a win-win situation as they get better nutrition, more value for money and newer recipes.

“I love experimenting with food so you can imagine my joy when I learnt about the Pecadomo campaign. Whenever I am pregnant, I avoid eating mayonnaise. However, I love salads and coleslaw but have to avoid it for the nine months. Now, I substitute Peak Milk for mayonnaise. The funny thing is that my salads taste nicer and is cheaper to make because a tin of Peak milk is cheaper than the smallest jar of mayonnaise which like N500. In a recession like now, options like these are needed. That’s where Pecadomo comes in,” saidMrs. Hannah Osasu, in Surulere.

With the rise in cost of living, pocket-friendlier options become necessary and many have learnt the various foods milk can be used to substitute.

Mary Oluwagbemiga is a student at Yabatech. She bakes to augment her school fees since her parents live in Akure. Recently, the price of eggs went up and for cakes, eggs are required. Hear her: “In order not to hike my prices too much, I started using Peak milk to replace eggs. Peak milk is thick and creamy and excellent for baking. Now, more people prefer to order my cakes saying they are creamier. That’s more money for me and less stress”.

A mother of four and businesswoman in Ogba, Mrs. Oby Asombahas to deal with picky eating in her children, especially as they dislike eggs.  “I insist they eat eggs but they always waste them. So through Pecadomo, I learnt how to use Peak Milk to make scrambled eggs and that made all the difference. Now, I get to use less eggs and get better volume. Also the eggs are fluffier and have more flavour. My kids now enjoy eating eggs which is good for me since they get their daily protein requirements and don’t waste food anymore.”

Surprisingly, some people admit that milk might be more than just a food source but might also be medicinal. Mr. O. Michael, a Festac-based businessman confesses that there was a time he had low sperm count. “I read in one of these herbal treatment booklets that mixing Peak milk with stout could boost it. I really don’t know the chemical explanation but I tried it and it worked.”

It also re-invents various local drinks and quick meals into more filling meals that can in the long run save cost especially in a recession like ours.  Mixing some Peak Milk into a glass of Kunu drink, fruit smoothie, coleslaw or Abacha (African Salad) means the consumer gets all the health benefits of these already nutritious foods plus the great benefits of milk and a delicious taste too.

Everyday drinks like smoothies and Hausa millet drink (kunu) can be made to taste better and more nutritious with the addition of Peak Milk.  For Thelma Ekanem, a lawyer based in Oniru Estate, Lekki, smoothies became a part of her daily diet due to her hectic work schedule and weight loss plans. “I usually buy a glass of smoothie for about N1,500 here in Oniru but with this recession, one had to get more prudent. I learnt to make my own smoothie with fruits and recently, adding Peak Milk. The taste is heavenly and very healthy too. Imagine the goodness of fruits and milk in a glass! Now, with about N500, I can have my Peak milk smoothies everyday.”

Alhaji Usman Mukthar, a Bureau de Change operator in Ojodu-Berger grew up in the north and loved drinking kunu. He said:  “I have been in Lagos now for over 15 years and I still really love Kunu. Unfortunately, I hardly get the kind of kunu I’m used to. The addition of Peak milk to the kunu just changes the taste. I recently found a joint where they served kunu with Peak milk. I go there everyday after my business.”

Milk still remains one of the best sources of essential minerals and nutrients like Saturated fat, Polyunsaturated fat, Monounsaturated fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Potassium, Carbohydrate, Protein, Vitamin A, Calcium, Vitamin B-6, Vitamin B-12, Magnesium, Calcium, Potassium and Vitamin D which helps heart and bone health.

Over the last few months, the Pecadomo train has visited many neighbourhoods and markets across Lagos, Ibadan, Akure, Ilorin, Benin, Warri, Port-Harcourt, Onitsha, Uyo and Aba.  Recently, the Peak Milk team was in Next Cash and Carry supermarket and Sahad store, Abuja; Jifatu store, Kano.

In driving more nourishment for Nigerians through its ‘Pecadomo’ – Peak can do more campaign, Peak Milk was recently at Irebawa Street, Ogba-Ikeja, Lagos for the neighbourhood storm where the brand showcased before residents the various ways Peak Milk can be used in cooking.

Despite the threat of an afternoon rain, adults and children residing in the area trooped in front of the Peak Milk truck which had been transformed into a mobile kitchen to experience culinary diversity by the Pecadomo team.

After a warm welcome and a brief introduction to the objective of the campaign, which is to present Nigerians with more ways to stay nourished in these times using their Peak milk,  four dishes were transformed with Peak milk.

According to the diary company in a statement, “Eggs are usually enjoyed during breakfast in many Nigerian homes because of its high nutritional value.  In this regard, the first dish prepared was ‘Peak Scrambled Egg’ which was made with eggs, black pepper, salt, margarine and Peak milk.

“The resulting dish was a creamier and more nutritious scrambled egg which can be served with bread. Peak milk also worked well in the omelet dish giving the omelet a unique colour, aroma and flavor.  The residents/on lookers who volunteered to be part of the taste session attested to this.”

Similarly, the Peak Oat pancake was prepared.  Instead of flour, this pancake was made with blended oats, eggs, nutmeg, sugar, butter, salt and Peak evaporated milk.  Not only did the pancakes turn out creamier and tastier, they also contained high fibre which is excellent for people who desire to lose weight.

As a healthy lunch dish, the chef prepared the popular Peak milk rice which was plain white rice boiled in milk and water. It was served with chicken stew.

Smoothies are fast becoming popular in Nigeria with many people opting for the healthier lifestyle. Hence, the Pecadomo (Peak can do more) team also prepared a Banana, chocolate and Peak milk smoothie (Peak Bachos) with chopped bananas, ice cubes, Peak choco, honey and Peak liquid milk. With a fast but quick mix in the blender, the smoothie was ready to the delight and enjoyment of onlookers.

Sharing her experience of the Pecadomo campaign, Mrs. Grace Philips, a businesswoman said that although she loves smoothies and made them often, the addition of Peak Milk made a great difference.  “I have been making smoothies for many years now but this Banana and Peak Smoothie makes me smile.”

For Mrs. Martha Ugwu, a businesswoman, the Peak scrambled egg tasted so nice and was highly nutritious hence, she promised to add Peak milk to her eggs especially for her children.

A regular consumer of Peak milk, Miss Funke Abiola said she has always trusted the Peak brand hence she was not surprised that they are bringing fresh ideas of how Peak milk can give more value adding “I have always used Peak Milk but I am pleasantly surprised by this. I don’t like eggs but I would definitely try the Smoothie and pancake at home.”

A banker, Mrs. Deborah Akinwehinmi who equally ate the Peak milk rice expressed her delight at learning how to prepare rice in a different way. “Initially, I was sceptical about how the Milk Rice would taste, but it was surprisingly delicious – creamy, smooth and flavourful. I am sure my family would love it when I prepare it for them this weekend,” she added.

Residents were also given nutritional tips as well as some cooking tips by the chef who also directed the audience to facebook.com/peakmilk for more recipes.

The Pecadomo campaign train promised it will be stopping at different locations across the country, imploring residence to be ready as it could be in any neighbourhood next.
