Chris Giwa defects to PDP, says it holds key to better Nigeria

Mr Chris Giwa, ACN candidate for the Plateau governorship seat in 2011, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Giwa, proprietor of Giwa FC of Jos, who was received at the party’s secretariat in Jos on Thursday, said that he opted for the PDP because he was convinced that it held the key to a better Nigeria.

“Nigerians have tested and tasted the PDP and the APC; from experience, the average Nigerian believes that PDP is a better option. I have opted to go with the majority,” he said.

Giwa, who said that he had “no immediate ambition”, promised to work for the return of Sen. Jonah Jang (PDP, Plateau North), to the senate in 2019.

In an address to welcome Giwa, Jang said that the PDP in Plateau was intact and ready to regain power in 2019.

“We had a setback in 2015 but we have put that behind and moved on. The defeat was a temporary setback that has made up stronger after realising our mistakes,” he said.

Jang cautioned PDP members against the temptation to jump ship simply because the party was out of power, and declared that those doing so would regret “very soon”.

He stressed the need for the PDP to remain united, saying that a divided opposition had no chance against an incumbent government.

“As your leaders, we will do everything within our powers to ensure that the PDP remains a strong and united entity.

“It is good to have an ambition, but no ambition is more than the PDP because it is the platform through which we can achieve such ambitions,” he said.

Jang assured PDP members that there would be no imposition of candidates, and advised those interested in seeking elective positions to reach out to the people.

Plateau PDP Chairman Damishi Sango in his remarks said that the party was stronger with Giwa in its fold.

Sango tasked members on discipline, noting that nothing would be achieved if members were not focused and discipline toward achieving set goals.

“The party is supreme; every member must respect it,” he said.

Other top PDP members that welcomed Giwa included Sen. Jeremiah Useni (PDP, Plateau South), national and state assembly members, as well as former ministers and commissioners.

Suspended member of Ekiti State House of Assembly Gboyega Aribisogan on Thursday shunned the panel raised by the factional People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to investigate him for alleged anti-party activities and disloyalty to Governor Ayo Fayose.

The five-man panel chaired by Commissioner for Commerce and Industries Michael Ayodele waited for over three hours at the factional secretariat in Ajilosun area of Ado-Ekiti without Aribisogan showing up.

Ayodele said: “Sadly, Honourable Aribisogan didn’t show up. We waited for him for hours but he decided not to honour our invitation.

“However, we are writing our report which will be submitted by next week Wednesday to the State Working Committee, because we were given seven days to complete the trial.

“We are going to rely on the paper submitted by the PDP ward and local government chairmen in Ijesa Isu Ekiti and Ikole local government respectively as regards his conduct over the allegation.”

  • PDP commends Osinbajo on tension-dousing steps

PDP commends Osinbajo on tension-dousing steps

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has commended Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on steps he had taken to douse tension in the country occasioned by “hate speeches’’

Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, Chairman, PDP National Caretaker Committee, said at a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja, that Osinbajo deserved to the commended.

Makarfi, however, called on government to build on the effort by making all sections to be viable and operate an inclusive government.

He advised the government to ensure that its programmes, policies and steps were tailored in a manner that no section of this country would have the impression that it didn’t count.

Makarfi also called on leaders and governments at all levels to handle emerging challenges confronting the nation in best way possible.

According to him, the emerging challenges include insecurity in the North-East, herdsmen/farmers’ clashes, kidnappings as well as agitations and counter-agitations for secession.

He said that PDP believed that human and national development normally had challenges, but that “handling of such challenges determines the direction that the development takes’’.

“As a country and a people, we have faced several developmental challenges; some have been resolved while many others are yearning for resolution.

“Even after such resolution as it’s typical of the evolution of human societies, we should expect to be confronted by new and emerging challenges.

“It is thus the responsibility of each generation of our leaders to grapple with and handle such emerging challenges in the best way possible. It is always a work in progress,’’ Markafi.

On herdsmen and farmers’ clashes, he said that while both groups had constitutionally guaranteed rights to existence, government needed to come up with measures that would once-and-for-all address the issue.

“We must, however, be able to differentiate between the business of peaceful cattle rearing and criminal activities and take appropriate steps to protect lives and property.

“We must also secure our borders in order to prevent the influx of foreigners who may not respect the laws of our land.

“Of concern also is the issue of cattle rustling, which is also taking an altogether unprecedented dimension.

“This unlike the pastoralists/farmers problem, is clearly an issue of criminality, which governments and security agencies need to wake up to, to reassure victims that the state is there for them also.’’

On kidnappings, Makarfi said it was worrisome that school students and teachers were had become targets of the criminal act.

He said that the development underscored the urgent need for security agencies to “up their ante’’ in the fight against the scourge.

“Apart from additional funding, equipping and intelligence gathering, capacity of the security agencies must be improved as a matter of priority as this will enable the nipping of this criminal activity in the bud.

“We, however, wish to commend the security agencies for the bursting last week, of a criminal gang of kidnappers which had brought untold hardship and anguish to several Nigerian families.

“It is our hope that this feat is just the start of series of efforts to not only bring this criminal enterprise to an end, but also bring the perpetrators to justice. ‘’

Makarfi also urged the security agencies and the judiciary to ensure that criminals faced the full wrath of the law.

He said that PDP believed that in any democratic space, allowance must be made for people to express grievances and agitate for the redress of such.

He added that while PDP had no problem with agitations, those calling for succession should respect the rights legitimate rights and dignity of other citizens.

The chairman described recent altercation which degenerated into the issuance of ultimatum and counter-ultimatum for some Nigerians to leave certain parts of the country as an ill-wind that blew no good.

“Hate speeches either coming from the North, South, East or West must be avoided and be condemned by all of us.’’

Makarfi, however, prayed for President Muhammadu Buhari and wished him quick recovery.

  • Makarfi PDP backs restructuring

    Makarfi PDP backs restructuring

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has added its voice to the calls for the restructuring of the country.

Addressing a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Makarfi said the PDP believed that in any democratic space, allowance must be made for people to express grievances and agitate for the redress of such, stressing that it’s a vital ingredient that sustains democracy and the rule of law.

The party chief however expressed worry over the manner in which the agitations and counter agitations have assumed secessionist dimension in certain quarters.

He called on the Federal Government to provide the enabling environment for discussions among the various ethnic groups in the country determine the way forward.

Makarfi said, “The PDP has no problem with agitations; in fact, we respect them and regard them as vehicles through which all segments vent their legitimate feelings.

“As Nigerians and a people, we cannot run away from talking to one another but this should be on the basis of mutual respect, confidence and even empathy.

“This will enable us to have a proper understanding of the feelings and yearnings of one another and properly appreciating where we all are coming from, as individual groups and as a whole.

“Nigeria as a federation has come a long way and it is our duty as individuals and a whole to ensure that it endures; and indeed surpasses the dreams of our founding fathers.

“Every step we take must be, as the Americans would say, ‘towards a more perfect union’. We are therefore free, to at any point in time take a look at the structures of the union, not its basis, and effect whatever corrections we collectively agree are necessary.

“It is in this context that we view calls from some quarters for the restructuring of our own concept and practice of federalism.

“It is therefore important that we consider the framework within which we can even discuss and be on the same page as to what kind of restructuring we mean or desire; and if nationally accepted, agree on frame work for its implementation.

“But we want to urge all of our people that in trying to draw attention to their yearnings and aspirations, respect for one another and the realisation that our rights do not include encroachment into, and infringement on the legitimate rights and dignity of others, should guide our conduct”.

Makarfi blamed military incursion into politics from the mid-1960s, saying the development eroded the very essence of federalism as was practiced pre and immediate post-independence.

According to him, the military in governance largely serviced the command structure of the military and that even democratic administrations have had to make do with military imposed structures.

“Such democratic dispensations, including ours, have had to govern by the dictates of constitutions promulgated by the military institution which is basically unitary by nature”, he added.

The PDP caretaker committee chairman said now that democracy has got foothold in the country, a critical look at areas that need improvement has become imperative.

Continuing, Makarfi said, “It is therefore not out of place for any, or all segment(s) to come up with ideas that they believe will strengthen the structures of our federalism with a view to restructuring it in such a way that it serves all of us and not just some of us.

“Such exercise should take a very good and critical look at all the structures and institutions as well as how they operate with a view to giving them a new sense of direction in tune with current best practices, though, as with all societies, taking due consideration of our peculiarities as a people”.

The former Kaduna State Governor however called for strong institutions that would serve the state and not the whims and interests of those in charge at any given time.

“We, for example need institutions like armed forces and security agencies to operate on the premise of loyalty to the nation rather than loyalty to the President, Governor or whatever nomenclature the Chief Executive is given.

“This should not look like a novel idea because we see it happening everyday around the world in countries that have built strong institutions that are the bastions of their democratic structures.

“The recent altercation between some of our people which degenerated into the issuance of ultimatum and counter ultimatum for some of us to leave certain areas is an ill wind that blows no good, more so that we have a sad history of not so dissimilar circumstances that we had better not allow a repeat.

“Hate speeches either coming from the North, South, East or West must be avoided and be condemned by all of us.

“This country belongs to all of us, and every one of us must be allowed to enjoy the constitutional guarantee of freedom to live and move about this vast God-blessed land without let or hindrance to pursue his or her legitimate endeavours.

“But I reiterate that mutual respect and accommodation are a very necessary ingredient. We have had that before; we still have that and must not allow it to elude us.

“We must also ensure that we have a better legacy to upcoming generations than the one bequeathed to us, and not worse. This is the way decent societies are built and developed by each generation building on the blocks laid by its predecessor(s), not destroying what they found in place.

“There is no harm however in trying to improve upon an existing structure. North, South, East or West, we remain Nigerians and we must continue to make conscious and deliberate efforts to develop and not diminish this our beloved country.

“We must therefore, as in any vibrant union continue to engage ourselves in various conversations that will oil the wheels of our progress.

“We however observe that restructuring could mean a different thing to different people. Whatever comes out of such exercise, so long as it is the aggregate agreement of our people, we should get to work to ensure that it works”.

Makarfi commended Acting President Yemi Osinbajo for the way and manner he handled the tension generated by the agitations and counter agitations by some elements in the Southeast and a group of Northern youths.

Said he, “The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo deserves commendation for the steps he has so far taken to douse the tension occasioned by the altercation, but we call on all government to build on that by ensuring that its programmes, policies and steps are tailored in such a way and manner that no section of this country is given the impression that it doesn’t count.

“At this juncture, let me seize this opportunity, on behalf of the entire membership of PDP to join all compatriots in sympathising with our President and praying over the current state of his health. We wish President Muhammadu Buhari a quick recovery.

“Let me reiterate the belief of the PDP in the unity of this country as well as its unwavering commitment towards the attainment of its manifest destiny as a country of pride to the entire black race.

“The party has tried to give its best in the first 16 years of this dispensation. In the course of that period, we scored many firsts, but as is to be expected in any human endeavour, we couldn’t escape making mistakes here and there.

“But overall, we are proud of the milestones reached under the stewardship of our party, especially put side by side with what obtains in the polity currently.

“We believe that human and national development however well defined, normally comes with challenges, it is the handling of such challenges that determines the direction that the development takes.

“As a country and a people, we have faced several developmental challenges; some have been resolved while many others are yearning for resolution.

“And even after such resolution, as it’s typical of the evolution of human societies, we should expect to be confronted by new and emerging challenges.

“It is thus the responsibility of each generation of our leaders to grapple with and handle such emerging challenges in the best way possible. It is always a work in progress”

Saraki’s CCT acquittal: PDP calls for proper investigation

The National Vice-Chairman (South-South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Emmanuel Ogidi, has advised federal agencies to carry out a diligent investigation of corruption allegations before prosecution.

Ogidi gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja while reacting to Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) judgment in a case against Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Wednesday.

The tribunal discharged and acquitted Saraki of the 18-count charge bordering on false declaration of assets.
Ogidi said that the tribunal did the right thing since there was no concrete evidence against Saraki before it.

He, however, said that cases of corruption were being lost in court due to lack of proper investigation by government agencies involved in the matters.

He said that it was unfortunate that Saraki had even been condemned in the social media before his trail when there was no substantive evidence against him.

If you don’t prepare your case well, you will lose. The way we are fighting corruption in Nigeria is not right. Saraki was presented guilty before he was even charged to court. That is not how to fight corruption. Fighting corruption needs proper investigation.

“If you know you are going to court, investigate properly and prepare your case adequately against the accused.

“Most times they say you are guilty before you get to the court. That is what has happened now. Everybody had condemned Saraki and that is not right.

“Let the court do its work to condemned whoever is found culpable of whatever he is accused of,’’ Ogidi said.

The PDP chieftain advised the executive to allow the judiciary to carry out its functions without any form of interference or intimidation, saying that the executive could not fight corruption alone.

“In Nigeria, we still behave like the military regime. We have three arms of government; let them do their works independently.

“Court has given its judgment and that is the correct thing. People should not intimidate judges; they should do their work in accordance to the Constitution and their conscience.

“Fighting corruption is not by intimidation; it is by proper investigation and ensuring that your evidence is beyond a reasonable doubt.

“That is what the law says, but today, it is not the same. We condemn people before prosecuting them.’’

He also expressed hope that the Supreme Court would be allowed to give its judgment in the PDP leadership tussle without interference.
