Kashamu faults Makarfi’s call for alternative platforms

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Buruji Kashamu has faulted the call by the Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee on members to seek alternative platform for their political aspirations.

Kashamu, who represents Ogun East in the Senate and a staunch member of the Ali Modu Sheriff camp, described Makarfi’s call as self-serving and disingenuous.

In a statement he circulated in Abuja on Thursday, Kashamu called on party faithful to ignore the call, saying Makarfi’s statement amounted to anti-party activity.

The statement said, “While it is true that a political party is an organization made up of people who voluntarily joined and could voluntarily exit, that call to decimate the PDP could come from those who seek to lead it leaves much to be desired.

“It is most reprehensible when it is realized that the call is coming from those who had benefitted so much from the PDP as governors, ministers and lawmakers.

“I dare say that their posture has not only shown their state of mind but it has also exposed them for who they are. It has shown that contrary to their claims, Senator Makarfi and his co-travellers never really had the interest of the PDP at heart.

“They have not conducted themselves as true party men. If they were true party men, they would never seek to throw away the baby with the bath water.

“There is no perfect relationship or organization anywhere. People, especially politicians, are bound to agree and disagree. We disagree, negotiate and build consensus”.

  • House of Reps member decamps to APC

House of Reps member decamps to APC

The caucus of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) got further depleted in the House of Representatives Wednesday as a member from Plateau State, Edward Pwajok defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is as a December 2017 dateline was given for the final decimation of PDP.

Plateau State governor, Simon Lalung said though democracy was not about a one-party state but PDP members would be left with no option than to join the ruling party by the end of the year.

House rules were stepped for the presence of the governor in the chamber to witness the defection.

This brings to 221 the number of APC member in the House.

On the 22nd of February, a member of the PDP, Emmanuel Ukoette representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom, defected to APC.

A month later, on the 22nd of March, two House members, Tony Nwoye (Anambra) and Emmanuel Udende (Benue) defected from PDP to APC on the floor at plenary.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara read Pwajok’s letter on the floor after which the Minority Leader, Leo Ogor protested saying the movement was wrong since there is a substantive Chairman of the party.

Pwajok, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) cited irreconcilable differences that have left PDP divided at all levels as part of his reasons for dumping the party.

Saying that the party secretariat in Jos was not even spared as it was sealed last week, he noted that, “The party is divided in my Local government down to the ward level with parallel structures.

“On Saturday 13th May, 2017, over 500 delegates from my constituency besieged my residence mandating, directing and authorizing that I quit the party”.

Minority Leader Ogor protested that the party has a chairman and that until the litigation at the Supreme Court was disposed of, division within the party was not enough reason for defection.

Ogor also protested when the Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila welcomed Pwajok into the fold of APC but the Speaker placed him saying same privilege would be extended to the Minority Leader if any lawmaker defects to his party.

Goveneor Lalung, who witnessed the defection of Pwajok on the floor said Nigerians should expect a decimated opposition party in the near future.

Saying that Pwajok’s defection would open a floodgates of movement to APC, Lalong said he was not planning to muzzle the opposition in the state.

“We are not planning to turn our State into a one-party state but if APC government is very doing and everybody is moving into our party from the federal to the State, why not?

“Though we are not saying we want a one party state because we need a strong opposition to check mate the ruling party, but I’m sure, before the end of the year, with the things this government is doing both at the federal and state, we may not have a substantial minority party again.

“The movement of Pwajok has opened the gate and very soon we will see a lot of defection into APC in Plateau State,” he said.

On his part, Pwajok dismissed the threat of the PDP caucus in the House saying he was “ready for them”.

He said his defection was not about 2019, adding that besides his constituents that encouraged him to dump PDP, the party’s chairman, Ahmed Makarfi has also asked members to find alternative platforms to further their political ambitions.

“PDP is the cause of its own problem and it is irredeemably damaged.

“Some party stalwarts like governor Fayose have sworn to leave PDP if Sheriff is declared chairman. Is that how to reconcile? Was it not those people that invited Sheriff?  APC did not impose him on PDD.

“Some of us complained at the initial stage that bringing Sheriff into PDP is like inviting an undertaker.

“So, I have to look at the realities and if the irreconcilable differences persists, one need to find an alternative platform.

“That is why this is taking place now and not on the eve of an election,” he said.

No law stops me from leaving PDP – Fayose

…Parades campaign buses without party logo

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has hinted on his readiness to quit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over the protracted factional crisis tearing the green-red-white umbrella to shreds.

The governor has also showcased new campaign buses which have no PDP name and logo fueling speculations that he had perfected plans to move to another party.

The campaign buses have the following inscriptions: “Support Continuity 2018, Fayose Wherever You Go, We Will Go”; “Ekiti 2018…Continuity, Fayose Leads, We Follow.”

Buses including 35-seater Toyota Urvan and 18-seater Toyota Hiace, otherwise known as Toyota Hummer bus are parked in the premises of the Government House.

TRENDING: Fayose removes PDP logo from campaign office, billboards

The buses which are painted lemon green are embossed with the picture of a smiling Fayose wearing black “danshiki” with red embroidery and waving.

The non-appearance of the PDP name and logo are tell-tale signs that Fayose has made up his mind to quit the umbrella party.

But Fayose who hosted students and youths Wednesday evening at Government House grounds whose ages range between 18 and 22 emphasized that he won’t wait a day longer in the PDP if his faction loses the case at the Supreme Court.

Many of the students who were attracted to the Government House with the governor’s promise of giving the first 300 that arrived laptops went home disappointed when the promise was not fulfilled.

Fayose promised to organize a raffle draw to determine the laptop winners which did not go down well with the youths who were eager to go home with their prizes.

Addressing the audience earlier, Fayose He also dropped a bombshell that stakeholders in the party loyal to Senator Ahmed Makarfi will defect to another party, if Senator Ali Modu Sheriff wins the appeal pending at the apex court.

He did not mention the party they (Makarfi loyalists) would defect to in the event of a loss to Sheriff.

When asked whether he has the intention of leaving the PDP as being rumoured, Fayose stated that no law prohibited him from defecting if the PDP can’t be a veritable platform for him to advance his political frontiers in 2018.

Fayose said: “I am still a member of the PDP and still the Chairman of the PDP governor’s forum, there are no two sides to it.

“But the strategy for 2018 poll is strictly my own business. No law says I should not run on the platform of another party if the PDP is no longer a right direction depending on circumstances.

“If they are bent on destroying the PDP, let them go ahead but I will never have anything to do with Senator Sheriff. The party is like a vehicle and the vehicle can’t be more important than the driver.”

Supreme Court Verdict:  Abia PDP set to go on fence mending mission

The Supreme Court judgement which affirmed the validity of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s nomination for the governorship election he won two years ago has made the Abia state chapter of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to set machinery in motion to bring back estranged members.

Speaking in Umuahia on the outcome of the judgement the chairman of the party Chief Johnson Onuigbo said that with the court case over that the party has commenced moves to bring back some those who left the party.

Onuigbo said that it is obvious that some of their members who felt aggrieved with the result of the party’s governorship primary left the party and that now the court case is over, “The next thing to be done is to bring them back”.

He said, “We’ve lost friends and associates during the legal tussle, now that the apex court has finally laid to rest any doubt concerning Governor Ikpeazu’s victory at the polls all those that had left the party should come back and join hands with the governor to build Abia”.

Onuigbo said that it was a thing of joy Uche Ogah, who was one of the litigants that dragged the Abia governor all the way to the Supreme Court, has congratulated Governor Ikpeazu after the Supreme Court judgment.

He said, “I learnt that Ogah had called to congratulate the governor which is welcome development which means that the war is over, the next thing is for others like him to do the same and also come forward to help build the state”.

The Abia PDP chairman acknowledged that the long drawn legal tussle had taken its toll on the governor because “for two years now this governor had been under pressure from left, right and centre.”

Onuigbo said that notwithstanding the distractions Governor Ikpeazu has been performing very well in driving development across Abia, adding that having finally overcome his traducers he would redouble his efforts to do more for Abia people.

He said, “The CJN wondered how four people would want to be governor of a state at the same time which is not possible, I advise politicians to put their house in order and stop putting undue pressure on the judiciary”.

“The judgement of the Supreme Court shows that there are still good people in Nigeria as their judgement on the Abia governorship issue has shown that there is future for the common man which the judiciary represents”.

Onuigbo commended the governor for the rapid development in the state despite all forms of distractions which have come his way in the last two years he has been in office and urged him to continue the good work he has been doing.

He lauded the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen for exposing the antics of politicians and chiding for interfering with the judicial process by trying to influence judicial officers with inducements.

He said that the advice the CJN gave to politicians was in order, adding that the disposition of justice Onnoghen was a strong indication that “good men are still around and that the judiciary remained the last hope of the common man”.

The CJN had while delivering judgment on the Abia governorship advised that politicians “should allow the judiciary to be independent because without an independent judiciary, there will not be a just society”.

He had noted that there were several security breaches, where desperate politicians made frantic efforts to compromise the court officials in the course of doing their job.

The CJN therefore warned that attempts to bribe judicial officers to pervert justice constituted serious offences and they would be thoroughly investigated to unmask the politicians and make them face the wrath of the law.

  • We must begin to prepare for 2019 – Oyegun

We must begin to prepare for 2019 – Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said on Friday that the party must begin now to articulate its achievement no at the federal and state levels and not wait for the 2019 general elections before doing so.

Addressing Party’s Publicity Secretaries from the 36 states and the FCT at a two-day workshop sponsored by the International Republican Institute (IRI), Chief Oyegun said the party must begin now to prepare for the next election by constantly and effectively communicating the achievements and plans our state governments to the people.

According to him, it is the responsibility of the publicity Secretaries to convince the people to continue to support the policies and programmes of the Government both at the states and federal levels, while selling the party vision to the people.

He told the, that as “spokespersons, you are the face and voice of the Party. You are the ones that the media and the public deal with most frequently. This has serious implication for the Party, our success or failure to a large extent depends on how well you are able to do your job.

“Accordingly, if for any reason the people are not happy with the party, the spokesperson is often the one who bears the brunt. He is criticised and railed against as a liar or even worse, called unprintable names. But in spite of this, he still has to do his job

But in spite of this, he still has to do his job which is that of effectively communicating the Party’s vision and plans in a way that it is acceptable to the public.

As you are aware, our Party is the first in the history of Nigeria to unseat a ruling party. We achieved that feat because of what you did and because of the effectiveness of our communication system across the states. We were able to sell the Change agenda to Nigerians, a message of hope and true transformation built on efficient management of government resources.

“Now that we are no longer in the opposition, but have formed the government at the federal level and in 24 states, there is more work to be done.

We need to sell our programmes and vision to our people even with greater vigour. We need to convince them to support the policies and programmes of the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We need to properly articulate the achievements of our respective state governments and sell the programmes of our Party to the people. We do not have to wait until the next election cycle to do this. This
    > is the time to prepare for the next election by constantly and effectively communicating the achievements and plans our state governments to the people.

“In this digital age, there has been an explosion of the mass media channels. In fact, it is very difficult to catch up with the information in the media these days, not to talk of the challenge of fake news that abounds everywhere.

“This has made the job of the Publicity Secretary even more complex. You have to be wary of what you respond to, and how you respond. The world is changing fast and we must also change the way we do things to continue to be relevant and effective.”

Country Director of the International Republican Institute (IRI), Sentell Barnes said an assessment conducted by the institute after the 2015 general election revealed that while only the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC clearly separated the responsibilities for internal and external communication, none of the parties has a written communication plan and strategy.

He said further that though the report observed that political parties are resorting to the use of new media platforms over and above the traditional media channels, it is interesting to note that none of the party reviews the content of its website to reflect it ideology, aims or address strategic party issues.

He stressed that a strong party-based communications provide vital avenues for public participation and connecting leaders and elected officials around common programs.

According to him, “Nigeria witnessed a remarkable political change nearly two years ago when for the first time in its political history, an opposition political party defeated a government whose party has held power for over 16 years. Many factors may have been considered as responsible for the feat but one which I consider prominent among them was the practical effort at communicating the party manifesto to the public.”

He disclosed that the workshop is expected to explore the communication channels that the party can use to strengthen their links with citizens by developing communication policies that will promote dissemination of party-based information through effective coordination of internal and external of the party.

In his remarks, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said the it was important for the party and its spokesperson to recognise the critical challenge in making transiting between how to handled party communication in the time of war, which election more or less is and how we handle party communication when you form government.

According to him, the party at the national level has benefitted from this transition by changing communication leadership at the national level from wartime to peace time, adding that people will now hold us to account for those promises that we made, People will recall that we were a party in opposition and there were things that we said as a party in opposition that presumed that we were operating on higher moral grounds.

“Now that we are in government, people will want to hold us to the same, if not higher standards. People will ask questions. Some will ask nicely, some will not. If they ask nicely, how do we respond? If they don’t ask nicely, how do we respond?

“For me, these are questions that I have struggled with. But one thing that is clear to me is that my job will be easier if I don’t see anyone who criticises the party as the enemy of the party. It is to presume that the criticism that I receive are well-intentioned, even if they are not.

“Treat them as well intentioned and therefore stick to the facts available to you. I know how much I have struggled to do this and I know that the aggregate of the party’s performance at the national level is the performance of all of you across the country.”

    Aba agog over Ikpeazu’s victory

Supporters of Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu on Friday trooped out in their numbers in Aba, the commercial hub of the state to celebrate the victory of the governor at the Supreme Court, Abuja over a fellow People’s Democratic Party (PDP) man, Dr. Uche Sampson Ogah.

At about 10am, when the news of the victory apparently broke, there were sounds of fireworks and cannons at both Aba North and South Local Government Headquarters respectively.

When our reporter visited the Aba South LGA, the road leading to the local government which also serves as a major road to Aba Main Park was closed down as jubilant Ikpeazu supporters dance round the arena to the tune of music being played by various music groups.

Prominent among elated supporters of Ikpeazu whose joy over the victory at the Supreme Court knew no bound was Hon. Eziuche Ubani, a close associate of the governor and the Works Commissioner.

At about 12pm, the convoy of the victorious Ikpeazu rode into Aba amidst jubilation from some residents and supporters from Abia South who came to welcome him.

The governor later made way for his country home, Umuobiakwa in Obingwa LGA through Aba-Ikot Ikpene Expressway and Ururuka road where he was later received by his kinsmen after which he went in for a closed door meeting with some of the people that came back with him.

Some of his kinsmen and Obingwa indigenes including Chief Dan C. Nwaogwugwu described the victory as divine.

According to Nwaogwugwu, he expected the governor and his team to focus on delivering democratic dividend to the people.

Nwaogwugwu urged Ikpeazu to have the heart to forgive, accommodate and extend olive branch to those that took him to court and to also use the remaining years to complete some of the project he has started across the state.

Security beefed up in Abia ahead of Supreme Court judgment

Police and sister agencies in the state have beefed up security in the state ahead of Thursday’s Supreme Court’s judgment on the Governorship case between Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu and Dr. Uche Ogah of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) respectively.

Our reporter who went round the commercial nerve of the state reports that there was presence of uniform and mufti security officers at strategic locations in Aba.

Some personnel of security agents who spoke to our reporter said that they decided to take such steps in order to ensure that nobody capitalized on the judgment of the Supreme Court to disrupt the peace in Aba and its environs.

In a chat with the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Geoffrey Ogbonna warned both Ikpeazu and Ogah’s supporters to avoid acts that could jeopardize the peace in the state, stressing that anyone that would truncate the peace in the state would dealt with by the police.

Ogbonna said that Abia Police Command decided to dispatch its personnel as a proactive step in stemming the activities of hoodlums and mischievous persons tomorrow.

“The Abia State Police Command has put all necessary things in motion to ensure that there would be no breakdown of law and order in the state no matter the outcome of the verdict of the Supreme Court. Divisional Police Officers have been advised to ensure that there is adequate security of lives and property in their areas of jurisdiction to avert any ugly incident that might come up as a result of the court verdict. Our men have been deployed at various strategic points as well.

“The youths in the state should not be allowed to be used in any form of thuggery during, before and after the Supreme Court judgment. I believe that whichever politician that they may be working for, will not send his or her children to be there. Parents are as well advised to warn their children, especially the youths to maintain the peace and stay away from any act that is capable of bringing violence into the state.”

  • Lagos LG polls: No room for PDP win in any council – Tinubu

Lagos LG polls: No room for PDP win in any council – Tinubu

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not record any win in the forthcoming council polls in Lagos State.

Tinubu, a former governor of the state, said this while addressing hundreds of party faithful at the Lagos State APC Stakeholders’ meeting at the party secretariat at Acme Road, Ikeja.

The stakeholders’ forum was held in preparation for the July 22 council polls.

Tinubu regretted the loss of some national and state legislative seats to the PDP in the 2015 general elections.

“2015 election was the greatest battle of our time. In the last election, we lost more than three LGAs to our opponents, which is very unusual.

“We have asked our leaders in those local governments to examine what went wrong and work together to chart a new course to ensure the APC wins back those councils.

“PDP cannot have any share in these council elections,” Tinubu said.

The national leader commended party faithful for their support to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration, saying that the governor had not disappointed the party and the people.

“We are grateful to you the people for your great support during the 2015 election. We have continued to hold Lagos in spite of strong opposition.

“Gov. Ambode has not let us down; he is doing a fantastic job in an environment where we have the economic challenges. He is doing it and he is doing very very well.

“He has a very good team. He is doing a great job and we are very proud of that,” he said.

Tinubu urged party leaders at the grassroots to shun bribery and favouritism, adding that quality leadership and merit should be upheld.

“Our leaders should be fair to the people at the grassroots; we cannot please all, but we can satisfy the majority. This politics is a give-and-take compromise.’’

According to him, the party will not use any of the current sole administrators in the forthcoming council poll.

“To appease some people, we asked the government to allow the Executive Secretaries to take over after the tenure of last council chairmen expired, instead of civil servants.

“That was why executive secretaries were chosen to pave way for politicians.

“When the term expired, we used sole administrators, but before we used them, we warned them that `when the elective position comes, you are not entitled to contest’.

“We agreed that time, we cannot change it overnight; executive secretaries, however, can contest.”

Tinubu, however, said 19 former council chairmen, except for one of them who is late, who only served single terms, would be given another chance in the coming elections.

He urged the party leaders to give consideration to youths and women in the sharing of positions.

The party leader also urged Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State to increase security presence in Surulere area of the state to check violence.

According to him, his attention was drawn to some violence in the area, which gave cause for concern.

”I urge the people of Surulere to be patient and peaceful. We will all benefit from the party,” he said.

Also speaking, Ambode urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure APC victory in all the 57 councils.

Ambode said: “We are meeting on a very happy note. I am able to look back and say that that confidence you reposed in me to defeat the PDP candidate was not in vain.

“This coming local government election is all in your hands. My call to all members of our great party is to ensure that all the 57 councils are won by APC. We have begun a journey to make Lagos and Nigeria progressive’’.

Earlier in his opening remark, Mr Henry Ajomale, the Chairman, Lagos APC, said that the forum was organised to allow party faithful to interact with the leaders of the party.

Ajomale said that meeting was aimed at moving the party forward ahead of the forthcoming council polls.

NAN reports that hundreds of party faithful and leaders across the 20 local government areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas were in attendance.
