  • PDP cautions INEC against declaring Oyo South Senatorial election inconclusive

Following what it described as unexpected delay in collating results, the Oyo state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against bowing to “pressure of the powers that be and allay fears that the election results of Oyo South senatorial district may be manipulated.

As at the time of filing this report, the PDP candidate in Oyo South Senatorial District, Dr. Kola Balogun is leading in the district, though results are yet to be officially declared by INEC.

The chairman of PDP in Oyo State, Mr Kunmi Mustapha in his statement said that PDP recorded great success going by the results sent into its situation rooms by its agents and supervisors deployed for the election.

He said “This is just as the party said it is aware of plans to influence results from Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s Ibadan South West local government to augment their deficit. The ruling party has also arm twisted INEC to declare Ibarapa North/ Ibarapa Central inconclusive which is strange to democratic ideals and processes.

“We are calling on INEC to be steadfast and not allow its men to be compromised by Governor Abiola Ajimobi and the All Progressives Congress led federal government especially in Oyo South senatorial district”.

“With the results at our disposal and verifiable by all INEC standards, our party is comfortably leading the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate in Oyo South. This is apart from the fact that we have recorded victories in four out of the five federal constituencies in Oyo South- Ibarapa East/Ido; Ibadan North East/ South East; Ibarapa Central/North and Ibadan North West federal constituencies. We are only waiting for the official declaration by INEC.

“Since morning, we wouldn’t know why the results declarations have been delayed when they are ready. We have it on good authority that Governor Abiola Ajimobi is mounting pressure on some Abuja forces to save him from defeat. But any attempt to subvert the wish of the majority of the people of Oyo South will be anti-democratic.

“We will like to, at this juncture, encourage the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barr Mutiu Agboke, not to be intimidated by the pressure.”

The PDP chairman said that the INEC boss should call his officials especially the Returning Officers to declare the original results from each of the local government.

“As we write, security agents have sent away supporters of our party from the collation centre while known members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, are allowed access within the premises. This is after declaration of results from each of the remaining 7 local government areas have been stopped, without any tangible reasons.

“While we are confident of victory, we wish to appeal to our teeming members and thousands of people who defied all odds, and rejected the APC’s vote-buying techniques to be calm. We believe that our candidate has won and nothing can change it.”

  • Akpabio decries conduct of PDP officials

Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has expressed displeasure with the turn of events during Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections’, saying the process was disrupted by thugs hired the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who did not allow the wishes of the people to prevail.

Speaking to reporters at his polling unit while waiting for results to be announced, Akpabio said the PDP were shocked with the performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC)  in the election and therefore resorted to carting away result sheets, to disrupt the process. His words: “Today, whenever they are counting votes and the APC is leading, somebody will come from nowhere and grab the result sheet and bolt away.

“It happened in Abak. The APC was leading so much that the brother of one of the candidates for the federal House of Representatives grabbed the result sheet and jumped through the window of the primary school and attempted to run away in his car. But the army shot at him and impounded the car. He managed to escape.

“In the local government of Governor Udom Emmanuel, they got angry when they realised that the APC was leading. They attacked the youth corps member and scattered the materials, as if to say why the APC should be leading in Onna, the governor’s community.”

Akpabio said what the opposition party did not understand is that the people love him simply because of his good works.

He said he was shocked with the avalanche of support and show of love he saw the day he defected from the PDP to the APC.

He added: “I have never seen such a crowd in my life. There were hundreds of thousands of people packed together, but they were patient.”

Similarly, a member of the state House of Assembly, Nse Ntuen, said what he witnessed during the election suggests that the electoral umpire has been compromised. He said: “There are no result sheets in many of the units. Even after voting, you see people coming to cause trouble and harass the voters.

“This is what we have been saying, even before the commencement of this exercise. It seems that the umpire is not neutral; the umpire is biased. But we did not dwell on that; what we have tried to do as citizens was to mobilise people to come out and vote.

“On a good day, nobody would vote for any other party here, except the APC. I am sure you have gone round the units in the local government to see what is happening.

“We have spoken to the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and he says we should mobilise people to take the results from the units to the oval government collation centres, because at the ward level, we hardly know the collation officers.”

He was optimistic however that the APC will carry the day.

The election in Akwa State was generally peaceful, but for a few flashpoints where violence was witnessed.

The exercise started late in many units, due to the late arrival if voting materials.

It was also as if the two major parties concede superiority to their opponent in places where they know they cannot win, by not bothering to have representatives in such units.

For instance, when The Nation called at the voting unit of Senator Bassey Albert, there was no APC agent on hand. Similarly, there were no PDP agents at Senator Ita Enang and Senator Godswill Akpabio’s polling unit.

As at 6.30pm when our correspondent left Akpabio’s polling unit, the results for the three voting points within the complex were yet to be declared.

The PDP also won the election to the Senate with 117 votes, while the APC got 30 votes. Sen. Shehu Sani of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) scored 92 votes.

Lawal said that in the House of Representatives election in the Polling Unit, PDP got 194 votes, APC 30 votes, while  PRP got 19 votes. (NAN)

  • Yobe PDP chair’s defection: APC, opposition party in verbal war

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe State are locked in a verbal war after the PDP chairman in the state, Alhaji Sani Inuwa Nguru, defected to the ruling party on the eve of the presidential and national assembly elections.

The PDP fired the first salvo ,saying  the APC is celebrating a bad product it does  not know.

Speaking to reporters in Damaturu, the state capital, the PDP governorship candidate, Alhaji Umar Ilya Damagum, said Nguru was more of a  liability than an asset to the party.

He said the former party chairman’s defection would not affect the PDP fortunes, but rather enhance its chances in this year’s elections.

His words:” It is a season of cross carpeting. Everyone is changing places that suit them and it didn’t come to me as a surprise because he came through the same process on the eve of the last election because he has that antecedent.

“Of course, human behaviour is situational. It all depends on what he feels at that particular time. The decision he took at that time was out of certain circumstances. Only God knows the offers that he has got or what has gone into his mind.

“I don’t think his defection could affect the fortunes of our  party, looking at what we have done so far.

“As I am talking to you, I am going to receive some defectors  from Zone C where he comes from.

“Some of them told me that they left the party because of him and now that he has gone, they’re coming back. There are people that have been disenchanted in the party because of his presence.

“Now they have activated their mode to work with the party with his exist less than 24 hours. So if you look at it from that angle, his departure has no harm to the fortunes of the party but will only increase our success.

“We are going to have election God willing tomorrow; we will assess ourselves. When someone does this kind of act at this particular time, then two  questions are in place:the question of credibility and the question of sincerity.

“I am sure those that are receiving him know him more  than us who had received him four years ago. For us, he is a bad product that shouldn’t be celebrated.”

But the APC governorship candidate in the state, Alhaji  Mai Mala Buni, attributed Nguru’s defection to the integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari .

He said the Buhari’s integrity has been attracting more politicians of note to the APC.

He said: “The defection of Inuwa Nguru and his supporters is a major political fortune for the party. They will work assiduously for the re-election of President Buhari and the victory of the party at all levels.

“Alhaji Sani Inuwa Nguru has practically and personally seen the achievements of the President  Buhari-led administration and remains the best option for Nigeria’s democracy.

“The former chairman was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the re-election of President Buhari and the APC was the best option for Nigeria and this informed his last-minute decision to abandon the PDP for the APC.

“In spite of all persuasions by the opposition party, the former chairman took an independent and honest decision in the interest of the nation and in accordance to the dictates of his conscience.

”Yobe State has enjoyed major intervention programmes, including the completion of the 330kVA power transmission line, Nguru-Gashua-Bayamari federal highway, education and healthcare delivery.

“We are proud to say that at the state level, the APC administration has more than ever provided democracy dividends in road network, healthcare delivery, education, agriculture and economic empowerment to the citizenry.

“It is on record that while most states could not pay salaries, the APC administration in the state has consistently paid salaries, pensions and gratuities to retired civil servants making it as a leading workers friendly state in the country.”

In another development, the son of the defected PDP Chairman   Lawan Sani Inuwa, popularly known as Mr. LAS, who is contesting for the State House of Assembly Election on  the platform of PDP, said he would not jettison his ambition or  follow his father to the APC.

Inuwa said on the phone that he had not spoken with his father since his  defection became public.

He vowed to pursue his ambition to actualize his dreams of becoming a lawmaker in the state.

  • PDP, Akpabio trade words over Obot Akara attack

Elders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the aegis of the Akwa Ibom Elders and Stakeholders forum and Senator Godswill Akpabio, yesterday, traded words over the carnage in Obot-Akara Local Government Area of the state.

The mayhem, which occurred on the eve of last Saturday’s botched election, led to the death of two persons and the burning down of 13 INEC vehicles in the area.

The PDP elders, who addressed a press conference, at the banquet hall of the Government House, in Uyo, accused Senator Akpabio of masterminding the attack in order to cause panic and win the elections for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Former Military Administrator of the state, Idongesit Nkanga, accused Senator Akpabio of hiring thugs from neighbouring States.

Nkanga who is the Director-General, Mandate Organisation, further alleged that Akpabio had assured the thugs of protection from Aso Rock, the DSS, the Inspector General of Police and other paramilitary agencies.

”The conduct, last Saturday, in Obot Akara where INEC buses were burnt with election materials was masterminded by Senator Akpabio.”

But in a swift reaction on Friday, Senator Akpabio described the allegations as spurious, baseless and unfounded, adding that the elders were playing the victim complex of an impending defeat.

Akpabio who spoke through his Special Assistant Media, Anietie Ekong, said “The attention of the former Senate Minority Leader and Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District, Senator Godswill Akpabio has been drawn to some spurious, baseless and unfounded statements credited to some Akwa Ibom Elders and Stakeholders on the forth-coming election.

”It beats our imagination that the Elders could call a press conference to spew lies and falsehood and make a crude attempt to blackmail President Muhammadu Buhari, all in the name of politics. But it follows a familiar pattern of crying wolf since the defection of Senator Akpabio to the All Progressives Congress.

He added, ”It is nonsensical for anyone to claim that Senator Akpabio held a meeting with unnamed security agencies in the state, and informed them that Mr. President has given permission for him to ‘kill and maim all opponents and that nothing will happen to any officer who carries out the instruction.’

”President Buhari is a responsible leader who is committed to the well being of all Nigerians and could not have given any instructions on innocent Nigerians to be maimed and killed. It is most irresponsible politics to drag in the name of the President.”
