Spokesman for the PDP in Edo State, Mr. Chris Nehikhare, who spoke in a chat with our reporter said the party was worried about the turnout for the polls on Saturday.

Nehikhare said the party was worried over voters apathy in the polls.

He said the voters turnout might be low because the people were not happy about the results of the February 23 general elections.

  • Court refuses to hands-off ex-minister Akinjide’s trial

Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court in Lagos Wednesday refused to recuse himself from the trial of former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Mrs Jumoke Akinjide for alleged money laundering.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned her with a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader in Oyo State Chief Olarenwaju Otiti and a former Senator representing Oyo Central Senatorial District Ayo Adeseun.

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, said to be at large, is also named in the charge.

Otiti and Adeseun had on February 6 prayed the judge to recuse himself from the case.

They accused him of bias, claiming that as a former head of EFCC’s legal unit, they did not believe they would get justice in his court.

Justice Hassan headed the EFCC’s legal unit before he was appointed a judge.

The applications were filed after trial had begun, during which a trial-within-trial was also held.

But, Justice Hassan dismissed the applications, describing them as “cheap blackmail”.

He held: “As rightly submitted by the prosecution, at the time the defendants were investigated and subsequently charged before the Federal High Court in Ibadan, the trial judge had been appointed a judge already.

“I agree with learned counsel for the prosecution that judges of superior courts of record swear to oath of allegiance to be just and fair, and cannot be disqualified from presiding over cases by mere allegations that the judge once worked in an organisation.

“Learned counsel to the third defendant had filed a similar application for the transfer of the case to Ibadan.

“On 12 December 2018, the court dismissed the application, only for counsel to turn around and raise allegations of bias.

“These applications are meant to harass, intimidate and blackmail the court; the court will not succumb to cheap blackmail.

“Both applications are liable to be dismissed and they are accordingly dismissed. I make no order as to cost,” the judge held.

The defendants were re-arraigned last January 16 on the amended charge.

EFCC accused them of conspiring to directly take possession of N650million from Mrs. Alison-Madueke, which they reasonably ought to have known was part of proceeds of an unlawful act, and without going through a financial institution.

The alleged offence, EFCC said, contravenes the Money Laundering Act.

Justice Hassan adjourned until April 18 for continuation of trial.

  • Fayose’s kinsmen, others defect to APC in Ekiti

No fewer than 100 kinsmen of former Governor Ayodele Fayose and members of Peoples’ Democratic Party in Afao Ekiti, Ifelodun/Irepodun Local Government Area have dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors were led by Special Assistant to Fayose on Local government affairs, Mr. Ayodeji Adu and other PDP’s heavyweights in the council barely three days to the House of Assembly election.

They were received by chieftains when campaign train of the APC assembly candidate in Irepodun/ Ifelodun state constituency II, Hakeem Jamiu hits the town on Wednesday.

Speaking on their behalf, Adu said they were spurred to join APC because of Governor Kayode Fayemi’s sterling leadership qualities in taking the decision and the progressive policies put in place.

The former Special Assistant disclosed that Fayose’s abysmal performance and his hostile leadership style forced them out of the party.

He added the PDP is myopic and short- sighted in ensuring sustainable development.

“This decision to dump PDP for APC was borne out of patriotism and it is for the betterment of my state and the country at large.

“Afao despite producing the Governor of the state for eight years is still in shambles without meaningful development, hence the need to embrace the right ideas that can take the town out of the current economic and social despondency.

“I pledge my commitment to the success of the APC candidate in Afao-Ekiti . I want to assure the APC would have a block vote in the town come Saturday,” Adu said.

Jamiu assured the next assembly won’t be a rubber stamp under Fayemi but provide a platform where people oriented policies would be enacted.

“Governor Fayemi is exposed and I know that he will see the legislative arm as partner in progress, rather than trying to treat lawmakers as slaves, the way Fayose did.

“Let me tell you, there are no defectors in APC, we are all one, so you have nothing to fear. I am assuring you that everybody will benefit from this government,” he said.

  • Kaduna: PRP, PDP senatorial candidates, call for poll cancellation

.. I’m going to court – PDP Candidate

People’s Democratic Party ( PDP ) Senatorial Candidate in Kaduna Central, Lawal Adamu Usman (MR LA) and People’s Redemption Party (PRP) have described the February 23rd Presidential and National Assembly (NASS) election in Kaduna central senatorial district as a sham and call for its cancellation.

PDP Senatorial Candidate and PRP in their separate press conference in Kaduna, commended the people of all the seven local government areas that make up his designated constituency for their support and the roles played by community leaders, the youth, women and multitude of independent voters to ensure their ‘victory’ at the polls.

Usman however said that, he would be challenging the outcome of the election, which favours the APC candidate, Malam Uba Sani in the court of law.

According to him, “we however find it saddening, embarrassing and ridiculous that the state government and the ruling party in the state went as low as to temper with the mandate voluntarily and collectively given by the people; a mandate freely given and universally acknowledged.

“Consequent upon this, and for the avoidance of doubt, we state here that we are committed to exploring all available lawful, constitutional and democratic windows to ensure that the people’s stolen mandate is reclaimed and restored.

There is no doubt the election was rigged and manipulated by the ruling party in the state and it must not be allowed to stand because it is not the will of the people.

“Accordingly, we hereby announce in categorical terms that we reject the process that led to the announcement of that manipulated, fabricated and concocted results, and call for their immediate cancellation.

“We wish to reiterate the call for all the people of Kaduna State, and in particular the good people of Kaduna Central District not to relent in their democratic struggle for a meaningful in the state – a change we can see, feel and use – by coming out en masse once again to assert their right to select leaders that would responsibly shape their future.

“Notwithstanding the ugly and shameful act of desperation shown by the state government and the ruling party, we remain committed to the overall peace of the state and communal harmony based on our abiding faith that only God gives power to whomever He wills,” he said.

At its own press conference addressed by the state chairman, Abdulrahman Haruna Danbirni, PRP said, “we condemn the last Presidential and National Assembly elections, as it ridiculed our Democratic participation of one-man one-vote in which each vote must count.

“It is sad that the election that has costs Nigerian a colossal sum of money and a great deal of time to prepare ended as a charade and a rape to our democratic process.

“Inundated with electoral irregularities, we are left with no option than to throw away the baby with the bathwater. Our agents from across the state have flooded us with reports of electoral irregularities, most prominent and widespread are: Alteration of results, vote-buying and non-accreditation of voters before casting their votes, non-application or deliberate bye-passing of card readers and the use of financial inducements and vote buying was business of the day on date of the election.

“The ruling party was seen openly engaged in buying votes from the electorate using cash and other valuables. APC Local Government Chairmen in the state were seen sharing money and materials openly to voters in election centres in order to win their votes.

“This open show of partisanship by public office holders is an indictment on their presumed non-artisanship and a testimony of the misuse of public funds for political gains.” He said.

Other irregularities alleged by the PRP include, over-voting in most polling units, cancellation of results in almost all the polling units that did not favour the ruling party, non-availability of result sheets in most of the polling units and intimidation and open partisanship of security personnel.

“For instance, in Birnin-Gwari and Giwa, Kajuru, Igabi, Birnin-Gwari and other local governments, security personnel were used to intimidate and scare away voters perceived to be in opposition to the ruling party.

“Another particular point of note is over-voting where the total number of ballots cast exceeds the number of accredited voters, which have been reported in most local governments and our agents have protested to no avail.

“INEC presiding officers have been fingered for numerous electoral malfeasances, where officials connived with the ruling party to manipulate results in its favour.

“It is also an established fact that the ruling party has replaced trained polling personnel with its cronies to aid in the manipulation of results to its favour.

“We therefore reject the complicity of INEC and the role of the security and the APC-led government in deploying state resources to aid the party in its mission to rig elections in its favour.

“We therefore call for the cancellation, Senatorial and House of Representatives elections in Zone II by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” said PRP.

  • Polls: PDP accuses Obaseki of harassing traders to vote APC

The Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State has accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of resorting to blackmail, intimidation and harassment of traders in the state with a view to forcing them to vote for the All Progressives Congress in Saturday’s House of Assembly elections.

It said the state government financially induced various market leaders at New Benin, Oba Market, Etinosa Market and Ekiuwa market to force and blackmailed traders at the markets to join an “Apology March” to government house scheduled for Tuesday, March 5, 2019 to beg Adams Oshiomhole and Governor Obaseki for forgiveness.

The PDP said it was clear that Edo people have rejected the APC policy and style and urged the people to give the APC a bloody nose again on March 9, 2019.

Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Chris Nehikhare, who stated this in a press statement said the traders are to join the in Apology March and pledge loyalty to APC or they lose their stalls in the markets.

Nehikhare urged the traders to resist the threat and see the elections as an opportunity to wake Edo state from its deep legislative slumber and make the state work again.

According to the statement, “Threatening a man’s means of financial survival for political compliance is reprehensible, irresponsible and condemnable. It exposes this government and its party, APC, as hollow, wicked and devilish.

“Edo PDP uses this opportunity to reassure the market women and traders that the APC threat is not actionable. It is a ruse!

“They have no powers to take your stalls talkless of demolish the market as they are boasting they would. You must stand up to the bullies. APC cannot bully Edo people.

“We sincerely appeal to you to extend same support you gave to our presidential and National Assembly candidates and vote massively for PDP House of Assembly candidates. Your support will guarantee quality representation and robust debates in the assembly.”

Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, described the allegation as a complete false and creation of the Edo PDP.

Osagie said it would take someone suffering from horrific hallucination to imagine that Governor Obaseki would hurt interest of the traders after prioritising their wellbeing through several reforms of trade practices.

He noted that some of the traders might not have obtained degrees from universities but they were more intelligent than Nehikhare.

According to him, “It is still lost on PDP that they lost the war in the presidential and national assembly elections held on Saturday February 23.

“They have depended on lies for decades as a strategy for accessing power and swindling people’s mandates, but Edo people and Nigerians now know them for what they truly are, mandate swindlers!

“Nehikhare must think very little of our illustrious women, mothers and sisters, who toil night and day to keep food on the table of most families in our state.

“For example, they know who has cared for them the most; sanitising revenue collection in the markets, rebuilding markets raised by fire incident, and appointing a market woman as a member of the board of the State Universal Basic Education Board, to represent the interest of our market women and mothers on the SUBEB board.”
