  • Political coalition in Delta rise against NASS minority leader

Chairmen of registered political parties in Delta State on Friday lamented the under-development of Isoko Federal constituency and poor representation in government at the National Assembly.

Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Leo Ogor presently represent Isoko federal constituency. He has been in the House since 2003, and is eying another term in next year’s election on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Rising from a meeting in Asaba, the chairmen said despite the huge contribution of Isoko constituency to the wealth of the nation through oil and gas exploration, the area has nothing to show for it in terms of industries, adding that the area lacked steady electricity, potable water and basic infrastructure.

Reading the resolution of the meeting, Dr. Clarke Mejebi of the Grassroots Party of Nigeria (GPN) stated that the party chairmen also noted with dismay that the area has not produced federal minister, ambassador or any other position of note since the return of democracy in 1999.

As a result, Mejebi said the party chairmen resolved to support a former chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, Mr. Joel Onowakpo-Thomas to realise his aspiration to represent Isoko Federal constituency in 2019 election, irrespective of the political party he intends to use for the election.

Giving reasons for the endorsement, Mejebi said Onowakpor “has never been indicted for corruption in spite of so many sensitive positions he had held and still holding till today.

“That Joel Onowakpor as chairman of Delta State Board of Internal Revenue raised the revenue of Delta State by over 250% before he left and we believe this experience will be usefully deployed to represent the Isoko people in the House of Representatives as from 2019.

“That Onowakpor’s credentials as a chartered accountant, business consultant, serial entrepreneur with interests in hotels and hospitality, financial services, commodity trading and other endeavours will be utilized for the benefit of the Isoko people if elected in 2019.

“As former member of the Delta State economic council, he has acquired much experience that would impact positively on the lives of Isoko people if elected in 2019.

“That Onowakpor believes in grassroots governance and development and was at a time chairman (mayor) of Isoko South Local Government Area (2007 – 2008) when he demonstrated leadership and executive capabilities.

“Onowakpor who is currently coordinating Federal Inland Revenue Service for Edo, Delta and Rivers states will leverage on his humongous experience and vast contacts to grow the Isoko nation to prominence when elected to represent the ethnic nationality in the House of Representatives.

“Our coalition notes that Onowakpor’s simplicity, accessibility and his philanthropic nature will definitely benefit the Isoko people whose men, women and youths he has vowed to empower when he us elected into the House of Representatives in 2019.”

He called on Isoko political stakeholders opinion leaders and the electorate “to vote in this exceptional son of Isoko in 2019 in order to terminate the dark days that Isoko people have endured so far.”

According to him, the coalition will support credible candidates with proven record of integrity and performance from the position of governor to members of House of Assembly in no distant time, adding that the case of Isoko Federal constituency is peculiar because of the lamentable level of under development.

  • 2019 polls: Bafarawa pledges to remain in PDP

….says former gov using NASS as hideout from harassment

Former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, on Thursday said he will remain in the Peoples Democratic Party even if he fails to emerge the flag bearer of the party in 2019 general elections.

Bafarawa is seeking to become Nigeria’s President under the PDP’s platform.

He said good governance and party supremacy must be respected at all times.

The former Sokoto state governor spoke with reporters in Abuja.

Bafarawa said he welcomes the entrant of new aspirants for the PDP’s presidential ticket.

He said: “I will remain in theceven if I don’t get the ticket. Anywhere we are playing politics, the party is supreme than anybody. The governor, the president is the agents of the party. Therefore the party is supreme is to supervise what the governor or the president is doing.

“The cardinal principle of any good government or party is the manifesto. Only the manifesto mentions what the party is going to do for the people.”

He kicked against former governors who are serving as senators in the National Assembly.

According to him, some of the former governors have made the national assembly a hiding place to escape harassment from their previous deed in office.

Bafarawa said: “I have been saying that the only way we can move the national assembly to be neat, to be well respected, is unless that governors are not going to join as senator. You cannot be a governor for eight years and then you occupy the whole constituency of a state and then for goodness sake what are you going to do in the senate?

“Those who are joining (the senate) after serving as governor for eight years, it looks like it is just a hideout place where they don’t want any harassment from whatever they have done.

“You can be a senator and then go for governorship but you can’t be a governor and come back to be a senator. Unless we change the system rejecting the governors joining to contest for senate then democracy will never be in good shape in this country.”

  • NASS invasion: APC, Presidency confused, says PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the Presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are confused based on the their reactions to the blockade of the National Assembly complex by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) on Tuesday.

The PDP also said the two institutions are burdened by guilt, following the barrage of national and international indignation that greeted incident.

In a statement on Wednesday by the spokesman of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said with the “failure” of the Presidency and the APC to sway the public with the sack of the Director General of the DSS, Lawal Daura, they have become “schizophrenic” in their bid to politicise the invasion, while further exposing their culpability in the sordid act.

In its latest reaction to the invasion, the leadership of the APC had accused the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki of instigating security issues at the National Assembly.

The Presidency had, in a swift reaction shortly after the invasion, sacked the DG, DSS, Lawal Daura with immediate effect.

Describing the APC’s accusation as jaundiced, the opposition party said the ruling party’s penchant for deceit knew no bounds.

The statement said, “How can the APC accuse Senate President Saraki of causing security concerns by ‘reconvening’ the National Assembly, when it is public knowledge that the National Assembly has not been reconvened despite the pressure by the factional National Chairman of the APC, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, the Special Adviser to the Presidential on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang and Senator Ahmed Lawan on the leadership of the Senate to reconvene?

“Is it not revealing that the APC, in alleging that the Senate President ‘reconvened’ the Senate as a pre-emptive move to frustrate federal lawmakers’ move to impeach him, unwittingly exposed their plot to cause violence and illegally take over the Senate?

“The APC, in its statement, has finally vindicated our position regarding its plans to stampede the Senate President to reopen the National Assembly wherein it will unleash thugs and security agencies to trigger violence, overwhelm the legislature and forcefully take over the leadership of the Senate.

“Nigerians are now clear on the fact that the invasion was carefully planned by the APC and the Presidency and that they would have succeeded but for the resistance mounted by our lawmakers, Nigerians and the media, who stood in defense of democracy.

“We invite Nigerians to note that in its attempt to politicize the invasion and provide cover for the culprits in the Presidency and the APC, the APC has ended up exposing their sinister plots and culpability.

“The PDP therefore insists on an independent panel of enquiry to be headed by a retired Chief Justice of Nigeria to investigate the remote and immediate cause of the assault while all culprits, no matter how highly placed, must be made to face the wrath of the law”.

  • Certificate scandal: Court dismisses case against Adeleke

A case against the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Ademola Adeleke for not allegedly possessing secondary school certificate on Tuesday was dismissed by an Osun State High Court in Osogbo.

The presiding judge, Justice David Oladimeji, dismissed the suit filed by two PDP’s delegates, Rasheed Olabayo and Oluwaseun Idowu, asking the court to restrain the PDP from presenting Adeleke to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as candidate of the party for the September 22 Osun governorship poll.

The plaintiffs, who are members of PDP in Osun had claimed that Senator Adeleke did not possess Certificate and urged the

They also urged court to restrain INEC from accepting Adeleke from PDP as its candidate on the basis that the Senator was not qualified, quoting Section 177 (d) of the 1999 Constitution.

In his ruling, Justice Oladimeji said the claims of the plaintiffs that Adeleke did not possess a “secondary school certificate cannot disqualify him from contesting the election because the constitution does not state that a candidate for the office of the governor must possess a certificate.”

According to the judge, the constitution only stipulated that the candidate must be educated up to secondary school level, saying “the plaintiff also admitted that the Senator attended Ede Grammar School.”

Dismissing the case, the judge, who said that whether Adeleke obtained a certificate or not cannot be used to disqualify him, maintained that the fact that he attended the secondary school is enough for him to contest.

  • PDP to N/Assembly: Impeach Buhari

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the National Assembly to immediately pull the full weight of all legislative instruments against President Muhammadu Buhari to save the nation from imminent collapse.

A statement signed by the spokesman of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said President Buhari crossed the line by placing the country’s democracy in jeopardy, thus setting the nation on the path of anarchy.

The statement said, “The invasion of our highest legislative institution by agents of the Buhari-led executive, a few months after the Senate mace was blazingly carted away by armed hoodlums, is condemnable, reprehensible, unpardonable, and completely unacceptable.

“With this siege, barely a week after presiding officers of the Senate were held hostage at their residences, it has become clear that the Buhari Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) intend to forcefully overrun and ultimately shutdown the highest lawmaking organ of the Nigerian government and pave the way for the total suspension of constitutional rule in the country.

Read Also: “You must join Buhari to transform Nigeria’

“The PDP notes in this administration’s quest to foist a fascist regime on our country, the APC-led government has taken several steps and actions tending towards the suspension of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), including direct usurpations of the duties and powers of the National Assembly and the judiciary in governance.

“Nigerians and the international community will recall that the PDP had earlier alerted of this plot, which included the phony medical trip to London for President Buhari as an alibi to exonerate him from any blame for this sordid assaults on democracy.

“The PDP, therefore, calls on the Government of Britain to support Nigeria at this perilous time by not shielding President Buhari in London. Nigerians urge the British government and other members of the international community to immediately condemn and totally reject the ugly developments in our country.

“President Buhari and his APC have consecutively and deliberately put our nation and its democracy on harm’s way and the National Assembly, as representatives of the people, must eschew all partisan interests and save the nation by immediately deploying all legislative instruments against President Buhari before it is too late.

“It is instructive to state that if today’s assault on our legislature had succeeded, it would have been the second time Muhammadu Buhari would have toppled constitutional rule in our country.

“Finally, the PDP commends Nigerians, who marched out in their numbers today, in response to our earlier call, to resist this brigandage against our nation even as we urge them to remain alert, as eternal vigilance is the price of liberty”.

  • ‘I joined PDP to kick El-Rufai out of Government House’

The Senator representing Kaduna North in the National Assembly, Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi said he joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to help kick Governor Nasir El-Rufai out of the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House.

Hunkuyi who recently decamped from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside other Senators on the floor of the Senate, had since fell apart with Governor El-Rufai, a situation which led to his spearheading a faction of the APC in the state.

Hunkuyi made the assertion, while responding on behalf of the decampees at a formal reception for them by the (PDP) in Kaduna on Monday.

He added that, God gives power but the APC regime in Kaduna and Nigeria has dealt with the electorates and the electorates will retaliate at the right time.

According to him, “We don’t insult, but we tell the truth. I am telling El-Rufai to use the remaining time he has in office to pack his things and be prepared to leave Government House. We don’t insult, but they will feel pains by the truth we speak,” he said.

He further disclosed that, PDP is full and rebranded, ready to take over.

The Lawmaker admitted what he described as ‘the error of bringing el-Rufai on board’, begging the Kaduna State people and God to forgive him for his roles. Adding that, “The engine of APC has been removed along with the tyres.”

He vowed that APC will never come back to power. “We came to join hands with our friends to liberate our friends from the bondage of APC in Kaduna State.

“Let’s join hand with our great party PDP and change things. Without PDP, there would be no end to untold hardship Nigerians would be suffering. We are praying to God to help us to be united to be successful in reclaiming our state and country,” he said.

Hunkuyi assured all those sacked by Governor El-Rufai that they would be given back their jobs when PDP comes back to power.

In his remarks, former Kaduna State Governor, Dr. Mukhtar Ramalan Yero said that PDP is back and the people are yearning for its return to power.

PDP Chairman Kaduna State, Honourable Felix Hassan Hyet while welcoming them back to the party, said that they would work together with the decampees to liberate Kaduna State and Nigeria from the shackles of APC.

He said all the mistakes APC are making is to propel PDP back to power.

“Hunkuyi brought El-Rufai to power. I believe he has realized his mistake and would work hard towards correcting that by helping to send him packing from Sir Kashim Ibrahim House,” he added.

  • PDP accuses Presidency of inducing senators to impeach Saraki

The leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has accused the Presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of inducing senators to impeach the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki.

The opposition party also alleged that the government was in the process of forcing the reopening of the Senate, contrary to Section 12 of the Senate Standing Rules.

The Senate is currently on annual recess and is expected to resume session on September 25, to begin legislative business.

But the PDP said the Presidency was offering each lawmaker $1 million to impeach Saraki for defecting from the APC to PDP.

The Presidency however, said its call for the National Assembly to resume duties was to enable the federal legislature process the 2019 election budget for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President Muhammadu Buhari had, a week before the National Assembly proceeded on its annual vacation, submitted a budget of N242 billion for the INEC for the consideration of the lawmakers.

But at a media briefing at its Abuja secretariat on Monday, the PDP queried the timing of the submission of the INEC budget seven months to the general elections.

Besides, the party, through its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the Presidency does not have the powers to order or call for the reopening of the National Assembly, as suggested by the presidential liaison officer for the Senate, Ita Enang.

Ologbondiyan said, “What Enang had done is just a mere wish. He does not have the power to order or call for the reopening of the Senate.  He is just expressing his personal wishes.

“As a matter of fact, Sen. Ita Enang has been the chairman of the Senate Rules and Business Committee both in the House and in and the Senate. Would he have listened to anybody from outside the chamber to come and dictate to the presiding officers.

“It is unfortunate that people who have experience in legislative practices and procedures, when they get to the executive arm, instead of telling the executive the limit of their powers, they pretend to know it all, and by so doing, they mislead the executives. That is exactly what Enang is doing.

“There are set rules: Section 12 of the Senate Standing Rules puts the opening  of the Senate within purview of responsibility of the President of the Senate and the operational word there is “may”; that is if the Senate President is convinced to reopen the Senate.

“We must not allow those who have no respect for laws to take charge of our lives because what they are plotting to do have a huge capacity to create anarchy for the nation.

“This is not a local government parliament, we are talking about our national parliament and some characters are sitting somewhere and dominating ideas that suit their own interests. And they want to use that to subdue what the rules and the laws say. It is totally unacceptable”.

  • 2019 PDP ticket: Ayade weighs options over opposition

Sunday Oguntola reports on the intriguing battles in Cross River State within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against Governor Ben Ayade’s second term bid

FORCES within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are perfecting strategies to stop the second term bid of Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, it can be exclusively reported.

The forces, according to investigation, are bent on truncating the governor’s bid to fly the party’s ticket because of several issues they have against the former university don.

Top among the reasons, it was gathered, is the perceived non-performance of Ayade by PDP chieftains and stalwarts, a development they said might make the party lose the election should it field the governor again.

A stalwart, who spoke with our correspondent, last week said: “The governor likes to talk big grammar and mesmerise people with grandiose projects. How many of those projects have been completed? How much impact has he had in terms of specific developments in the state?

“It is obvious most of his plans are more on paper than on the grounds because people are obviously crying they have not felt his impact at all.

“To field a man like that can be counter-productive for the party. So, it is better we put him where he belongs to salvage the PDP and retain the state.”

It was learnt the perception of non-performance has gained grounds across the state with residents saying the governor has not delivered like his two recent predecessors, Liyel Imoke and Donald Duke.

This perception gathered momentum recently when the highly respected founder of Bishop of God’s Heritage Centre Worldwide, Calabar, Dr. Josef Bassey, dismissed the governor as a colossal failure.

A visibly livid Josef told reporters that Ayade is undeserving of a second term in office. According to him: “Cross River State needs to be rescued as a matter of urgency from sinking. We have been inundated with pressure of public complaints. It is at different levels … people are crying, people are agonising, all manner of things.

“First year, he made excuses and assumes that he is trying to settle in and he has done a few things and all of that; the second year the same thing. As fathers, you don’t rush to talk, you don’t rush to say things, you watch, you pray, you hope and believe that, if that is a mistake, that somebody will make it right.

“Let’s even assume that somebody played and played away two years; that this person is likely to seek reelection, he should do his best in the next two years to get things right.

“But, unfortunately, that has not been so because, as I speak with you, I have to stop to think, what are the key areas where you can say this is where progress, meaningful progress has been achieved and actualised?

“In all sincerity, I rally cannot find any. And I have been around here for a long time by the grace of God from the days of the military administration, whether you are going to talk about Ibim Princewill, the Kefas, whoever, the Agboneni to the days of Clement Ebri , the Donald Dukes, all of that . You can put all of them together.”

Bassey, who serves as President of the Cross River State Christian Leaders Forum (CRSCLF), a powerful ecumenical Christian pressure group in the state, added: “In my opinion, and our opinion, we have never had it this bad. It has never been this bad for a state and it couldn’t be worse than this, so I think. So, something needs to be done. What area is there to commend; maybe of course the area of appointments.

“That there have been a lot of people being appointed into positions, and these appointments also, well, for those of us who understand public service, and understand procedures, how things are done, are also worried because, how are these things done?

“Never in the history of this state has the state civil service been so bastardised. I understand what civil service is about. When you now have a situation where a person is appointed a Director-General and you go to his office and the person doesn’t have a chair, he doesn’t know where his office is.

“We should constantly work at developing stronger institutions than stronger individuals. But, when we see our institutions being destroyed, the legacy, the heritage of the civil service for instance, being destroyed before our very eyes, something is wrong.

“When you tell me there is a government running where there are no memos, and that memos are by WhatsApp, then something is wrong.”

Bassey may have spoken after feeling the pulse of common men as a gospel minister. But the governor’s aides carpeted him as sponsored.

The Special Press Secretary to Ayade, Mr. Christian Ita, said: “There is no conflict or face-off between the governor and Christian leaders. We have good relationship with CAN and PFN, so where is the conflict coming from?

“That forum does not even exist. It is the creation of one man. He is just on his own with some drummers in the bush beating the drums for him…Josef Bassey is the voice of Esau, the hand of Jacob.”

There are insinuations Bassey may have been prompted or encouraged by PDP chieftains in the state to take on the governor. Aside from commanding large followership, the preacher is perceived as the conscience of the masses in the state.

The ploy, it was gathered, is to sell the impression the Christian community has ditched the governor as a prelude to denying him the governorship ticket of the PDP.

Aside from taking him on in the public space, albeit through proxies, our correspondent learnt the stalwarts have also convinced hitherto jittery aspirants to join the race. Backed by those they consider party heavyweights, the aspirants have become more and more vociferous with their campaigns, even demeaning the governor as unfit.

A former aide to the governor and special envoy of Cross River to the African Development Bank (ADB), Emmanuel Ibeshi, is leading the pack, giving the governor a good run for his money. His supporters recently protested at the PDP National Secretariat demanding that Ayade shouldn’t be fielded. Another of such protests held again in Abuja, sending shivers down the governor’s camp.

Ibeshi, a former National Publicity Secretary of the party, is from the Northern Senatorial District like Ayade. His entrance into the race seriously jeopardises the unwritten, gentleman arrangement for power to rotate among the three districts in 1999.

Based on it, Duke from the South and Imoke (Central) rode to the governorship seat with Ayade serving the turn of the North. But political stakeholders in the state are of the argument that the arrangement no longer subsists since all the districts have taken their turns.

Besides, they said even if the North must serve out its second term, the district should look for another candidate who can deliver democratic dividend against “paper work projects.”

Other governorship aspirants from the North include ex-House of Representatives member, Paul Adah; former Commissioner Venatius Ikem and John Upan Odey, a banker. Incidentally, all of them are from Obudu Local Government Area like the governor.

There is also a geoscientist, Tony Ushie, from the district. Thankfully for the governor, they are in the All Progressives Congress (APC) aside from Ibeshi. Rumours are rife the aspirants from the governor’s council were engineered to portray him as lacking home support and unpopular among even his kinsmen.

Another grouse by the PDP leaders against the governor is the alleged efforts to raise a new generation of political supporters, totally disloyal to the old order. This anomaly, as they call it, is most reflected in his choice of political appointees without regards for inputs from established politicians in the state.

In fact, it is believed this political mafia is behind attempts to deny him the party’s ticket. These people, most of who function as godfathers, are not only heavily grounded financially but also politically. They are said to have vowed that Ayade will never fly the PDP’s ticket so long as they are still alive.

They are said to be gaining support of the PDP executives in the state, who have mostly been silent or non-committal to the second term ticket of the governor. The party executives, according to investigations, believe Ayade runs a one-man show and does not fund operations that would have empowered them.

By allegedly not funding party activities as well as shutting off matters relating to appointments, the party executives are seen to have withdrawn into their shelf, waiting for the governor to approach them with request for the ticket.

One of them, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent: “We shall see how he would get the ticket without recourse to us. If he thinks he can run the government alone for four years, let’s see how he will get the ticket without us. We shall let him know then who is really in charge of the party.”

The governor, according to sources close to him, is well aware of oppositions against his second term ticket and is weighing his options. One of them confided the governor might consider leaving the PDP for a mega party in the event everything fails.

But an aide said the governor will get the party ticket without as much as a sweat. “These things are not new. They happen every time there is election. The governor is not shaken at all. He knows what to do to whip everybody into shape. I assure that when it is time, everything will fall into line for him“.

  • Ekiti election: Fayose’s deputy files 700-page petition against Fayemi

Urges tribunal to declare him winner of gov. poll

Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, has dragged the governor-elect, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, before the Election Petition Tribunal.

Olusola, who was the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the July 14 governorship election, urged the court to declare him winner of the poll claiming that he scored the highest number of lawful votes cast.

He urged the jury to set aside the victory of Fayemi, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the result declared by INEC, Fayemi polled a total of 197, 459 to defeat Olusola, who received 178, 121 votes.

Olusola, who was accompanied by his running mate, Mr. Ayodeji Ogunsakin, submitted a 700-page petition at the tribunal registry within the State High Court premises at about 5.30 pm.

The statutory 21-day grace allowed by the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) to file a petition by any candidate aggrieved with the outcome expired on Friday.

Olusola explained that the team of lawyers that will defend his petition will be led by an Ilorin, Kwara State-based Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Malam Yusuf Ali.

Speaking with reporters after filing the petition, Olusola said he was motivated to go to court because of what he described as the “brazen robbery” allegedly carried out by INEC in collaboration with federal security forces.

He alleged that the poll was manipulated by people he described as “political desperadoes using the instruments of the Federal Government.

The PDP flag bearer also alleged ballot snatching, ballot stuffing, gross falsification of results and the use of security forces to subvert the electoral wishes of Ekiti people.

He urged his supporters to keep hope alive noting that he has absolute trust in God and the judiciary to retrieve the alleged stolen mandate.

Olusola said: “Today, I formally filed the much expected petition against the results of the July 14, 2018 governorship election, which was openly manipulated by political desperadoes, using instruments of the federal government.

“Like I have maintained, I am challenging the election results not out of desperation to be governor, but for reasons of future and posterity, and largely on behalf of the people of Ekiti, who were taken aback by the outcome of the election.

“Without doubt, the will of the people was subverted by those who have chosen to take Nigeria back to the dark days of ballot stuffing, ballot boxes snatching and outright falsification of election results and I believe they deserve to get justice.

“I am challenging the election results not out of desperation to be governor, but for reasons of future and posterity, and largely on behalf of the people of Ekiti, who were taken aback by the outcome of the election.

“Without doubt, the will of the people was subverted by those who have chosen to take Nigeria back to the dark days of ballot stuffing, ballot boxes snatching and outright falsification of election results and I believe they deserve to get justice.

“As law abiding citizens of our country, the only path of honour to take in a situation like this is the process that we have initiated today, to seek redress against the use of security forces and other instruments of the federal government to suppress the will of our people.

“Sadly, the desperation of the APC to take over all States in the country, especially those under governors like Dr. Ayodele Fayose perceived as uncompromising has destroyed all the gains made by the PDP government regarding free, fair and credible elections.

“The mood of Ekiti people when the beneficiary of the electoral robbery was declared winner and up till today is a pointer to the resolve of the people not to accept the subversion of their will and we have answered their calls to use the judiciary to get back their mandate.

“In doing this, we have presented overwhelming discrepancies in the results declared by INEC to the tribunal to adjudicate upon and I am confident that the popular mandate of the people of Ekiti will not go unrestored. I therefore want Ekiti people to keep hope alive, remain strong and resolute in their belief in God.

“While we go through this judicial walk to exposing the electoral thievery of July 14, 2018, we urge the good people of Ekiti State, especially my teeming supporters to remain calm, peaceful and prayerful, bearing in mind that those who stole their mandate will not enjoy the benefits for long.

“I also want to use this opportunity to condemn the indefinite closure of the State Radio and Television stations. No doubt, the closure of the radio and television stations was part of the grand plan to sustain the inglorious use of naked force to rob Ekiti people of their democratic rights, but the people will triumph ultimately”.

A member of Olusola’s legal team to the petitioner, Mr. Ola Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate, said what the petitioner was asking for is outright nullification of the election that produced Fayemi and declare their client winner of the poll.

Olanipekun said: “By the time the hearing begins, we are going to prove cases of falsification of results, ballot snatching, ballot stuffing and use of powers to subvert the will of the people.

“By the time we do this, the whole world can judge whose the actual winner was. We are confident that justice will be done in this case, we are sure that our client shall get justice.

  • Realignments for survival, relevance in 2019

The spate of defections, mostly from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reached a crescendo on Tuesday when Senate President Bukola Saraki and Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State, two senators, six members of the House of Representatives and 22 of the 23 House of Assembly members dumped the ruling party. Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI, Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN and MUSA ODOSHIMOKHE sought the views of some observers and politicians about the development.

The much-expected defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his political associates in Kwara State from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came to pass on Tuesday. He was accompanied by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State, two senators, six members of the House of Representatives and 22 out of the 23 House of Assembly members.

Politicians lawyers and right activists who spoke to The Nation said the body language of the affected politicians had long indicated that they were bound to leave the party before next year’s general elections. But, the likely impact on the election, they say, would become discernible with the passage of time, as other variables come into play.

Former Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch, Mr. Monday Ubani said Saraki’s resignation from the ruling party does not come as a surprise, because it had become obvious a long time ago that he was on his way out of the party, adding that it is a good development that he has eventually made his final move. Ubani described Saraki as a calculating politician who must have done his homework before taking the final move.

He said: “My people in Igboland say when a snake is inside a hole, one may not be able to assess its height and weight until it comes out fully. At the moment, many things are still hazy; we may not be able to say accurately the impact this development will have on next year’s general elections, but we can hazard a guess. If the APC eventually loses the majority in the Senate, it is going to be a bit turbulent for the party, particularly the dealings of the Executive with the upper chamber; it would become a bit more contentious.

“But knowing the way Saraki operates, he would not have made this move, if he was not sure that the PDP will become the majority in the house. So, before making this final move, he must have secured arrangements to ensure that the PDP becomes the majority; to make his continued stay as the Senate President would be secure.

“He would now ensure that he comes back in 2019 to become the Senate President once again. One, he must be sure that his new political party will win the majority in Senate and he would be sure of his own re-election on that platform, so that he can retain the presidency of the Senate.

“The point is, he must be sure of his political existence and relevance before making the move. The recent of defections is about the political survival of the individual politicians; they are all looking for a breath of live. Where there is no breath of live, they will move on.”

Second Republic politician, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, also said the development was expected. He said: “Saraki has virtually been out of the APC for a long time. All his supporters have already left the party, so everybody has been waiting for him to make this move. His supporters that won elections during the recent APC primaries in Kwara State have been sacked and a caretaker committee appointed to take their place, so the move was expected.

“Besides, given the persecutions that followed his emergence as Senate President, it is not surprising that he opted out of the party.”

Yakassai the recent spate of defections is likely to affect the overall number of votes that would be cast for the ruling party next year, “if the election is going to be free and fair”. He added: “What I do not know is whether Buhari and his supporters would behave the way former President Goodluck Jonathan and his supporters behaved, in the event that they lose the election.”

A chieftain of the PDP in the Southwest, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, said the PDP is Saraki’s home and “we are glad that he is back to the fold”. His words: “Like any other Nigerian, hunted by his own party, will you feel happy staying in that same party? If the future of our nation is at stake, the way it is, will you want to stay behind? Will you want to stay with those that destroy the very fabric of our unity? I want to say that Saraki did the natural thing to do, running away from enemies and embracing friendship. The PDP is Saraki’s home and we are glad that he is back to the fold.

“His coming will enhance the fortune of the PDP because Saraki has become a franchise in Nigeria. You cannot ignore his presence. He was a two-term governor and the number three citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The future will depend on what he does and what he does not do. We welcome him back to our party and we are glad our son is back home.”

Former Minister of Transport, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, who is also a chieftain of the PDP, said it is a beautiful piece of news that Saraki has left the APC. His words: “It’s a very beautiful news to hear that Saraki has left the APC. I am happy about it, when he was with us in the PDP, he was very good. He was upright and when he left I was one of those who missed him. For us, it is something good that he is back to the PDP with Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State.

“He is a very competent fellow; I am very delighted they are back to the good people where they naturally belong.  We are going to win next year election and they have added to our chances of winning. That is why I support wholeheartedly the request by the National Working Coming of the PDP to change its name from the PDP. With that new name by the grace of God, we will go with our allied to win next year’s election.”

A senior lawyer, Chief Niyi Akintola, has ruled out Saraki’s  exit affecting the performance of APC in the 2019 general elections.

Akintola said the impact of Saraki’s defection would not be felt beyond Kwara State. Certainly his exit will not affect APC victory in 2019, he stressed.

He said while Saraki has the right to leave and join any political party of his choice, he should resign as Senate president. The legal luminary said: “The honour and dignity demand that he should step down as Senate president. Unfortunately, honour and dignity are in short supply by the Nigerian politicians.

“The legal implications of his defection can only be decided by the court. But speaking as a concerned citizen, I think Saraki should not wait for anybody to tell him that he should leave the office of Senate President honourably.”

The APC spokesman in Lagos State, Mr Joe Igbokwe, was very blunt in his comment. He said: “Thank God that Saraki the greatest traitor has finally gone; he is gone into political oblivion. I have not forgotten the night of long knife that threw him up as Senate president. After more than three years of disaster foretold, the Judas is out for good.”

To Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, the exit of Saraki was not unexpected; we saw it coming. Members of the new Peoples Democratic Party and the Reformed APC had given us an indication that their departure would be in phases.

Mamora said the utterances of Governor Ahmed and Kawu Baraje in recent time suggested that it was a matter of time that they would leave APC. The masquerade has been unmasked, no one is left in doubt, the plan has been actualised, he added.
