  • Lamido laments confusion in Buhari’s govt

    Declares himself PDP candidate

Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, on Thursday carpeted the administration of President Muhummadu Buhari and alleged that there was confusion in the Federal Government.

Lamido, who insisted that Buhari was not in charge of his administration, added that nobody in the administration could be held accountable for the crises rocking different parts of the country.

The former governor was in Bayelsa State with his entourage to seek the support of Governor Seriake Dickson and the state’s chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for his presidential ambition in 2019.

He, however, declared himself the PDP candidate for the election and boasted that he was sure of winning the ticket and becoming the commander-in-chief in 2019.

Speaking in a courtesy visit to Dickson in Government House, where he was received by crowd of PDP stakeholders, Lamido highlighted some events that made him believe President Buhari was not in charge of his government.

He said a detachment of policemen laid siege at the residence of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, for over 10 hours but that the Inspector-General of Police denied the development and said he did not authorize it.

Lamido further said Buhari claimed he knew politicians behind the killings in the north but had failed to arrest them despite thousands of lives lost in many conflicts.

He said: “Today, Nigeria is under siege. As a government, they have no focus. As a government, we don’t know who is in charge, whether it is Buhari or chief of staff. Nobody knows.

“Lamentably, our President said the issues of crisis and violence is caused by people he knows very well. But he can’t even arrest them. You know them but you can’t arrest them.

“The IG went and blocked the house of the Senate President. For ten hours the house was under siege, but the IG said he was not aware. Who is in charge? Buhari doesn’t know and IG doesn’t know. Maybe it is Sule Lamido. Who do you hold accountable? Nobody.

“We have a government which is not focused, incompetent and evil and this country country belongs to all of us. Today, we could see the impunity in government. The number of theft in NNPC and the Central Bank is unheard of. They loot, drain and suck our blood like leeches. But they will say we are the thieves.

“Today in the north we are killing each other. In Sokoto, Zamafara, Benue and Taraba people are dying. The IG is still inviting Saraki to come for this Offa robbery, but the Attorney-General of the Federation said there was no evidence”.

He said Buahri and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in their tripod campaign promises of security, economy and corruption.

He said: “APC came on the tripod of security, economy and corruption. Under PDP, for 16 years we were only there corrupting, stealing and killing, today we have a party of angels brought from heavens and Buhari, Mr. Saint it is up to us to reflect.

“Are we happier now? Are we more united? Are we richer? And are we more secured? APC is a virus of evil. It has turned lies into a part of governance”.

Lamido claimed to be the only qualified PDP aspirant to challenge Buhari in 2019 and said other aspirants have lacuna in genie membership of the party.

He said: “We want a thoroughbred PDP person. I came to see my brothers and sisters. We share the same concerns and commitments. Before you here is the aspirant not an aspirant. Before you here is the President of Nigeria after our convention.

“Before you here is your brother and commander-in-chief in 2019. Our party needs the cohesion and the discipline.  So, we must rescue Nigeria and it must be somebody with the character of the PDP. In me is a very huge and large heart.

“We have to save Nigeria. I didn’t come to campaign. I am your candidate. Whether you like it or not l must be your candidate. When others come, there will be lacuna in their membership. You need a consistent person”.

In his remarks, Bayelsa State Governor, Seraike Dickson described Lamido as a consistent, dependable, courageous mobiliser for the PDP and supporter of good causes for the country and the party.

While appealing to Nigerians to rally round PDP to rescue the country from its litany of woes, Dickson said Bayelsa was ready to receive more presidential aspirants.

He described the current security and economic challenges in the country as unparalleled saying the APC failed to deliver on its mandate to the citizenry.

He expressed gratitude to Alhaji Sule Lamido and other progressive minded stakeholders of the party for giving the Niger Delta, which is a minority region, the opportunity to produce a president in the person of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Dickson emphasized the need for all PDP contestants to pursue their aspirations with the collective interest of the PDP at heart to enable the party organize a free, fair and credible primary that would produce a widely accepted flag bearer.

He said: “You are consistent, dependable and courageous mobilizers for our party. This state remembers the storms you have weathered to defend the best interest of our party. These are very trying times, but you stood by what was right for Nigeria and for the PDP.

“The state appreciates your steadfastness; even our party leaders are waiting at the secretariat to receive you. All i want to say is that, we appreciate, your steadfastness and progressive views.

“We call on you and other contestants to be ready to collaborate with the national leadership of our party when the delegates come together to vote in a free and fair primaries that would produce an acceptable leader”.

  • Makarfi condemns police siege on Saraki, Ekweremadu

Former Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Sen Ahmed Makarfi has condemned the siege laid by the police on the residences of the principal officers of the National Assembly, describing it as dangerous and a threat to democracy.

Sen. Makarfi in a statement signed by his media aide, Murktar Sirajo, said the latest assault smacks of a breach of the tenets of presidential democracy.

He cautioned that the nation’s parliamentarians should not be treated like common criminals because of their political difference.

The statement reads: “Nigerians woke up again this morning to the rather very sad and disturbing incidences of the siege on the residences of Principal Officers of the National Assembly, by detachments of the Nigerian Police Force, obviously to stop them from presiding over the day’s session, which eventually witnessed the defection of some Senators from the ruling party.

“Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi considers this assault on the leadership of the National Assembly, an independent arm of government and one of the legs of the tripod upon which the presidential system rests, as dangerous, primitive and one that constitutes a very serious threat to democracy in our country.

“It is a clear breach of one of the fundamental tenets of Presidential democracy, which provides for separation of powers.

“It also constitutes a serious abuse of the fundamental human rights of the targeted individuals, both the presiding officers and the defectors respectively, because the right to associate is inalienable. Sadder still, is the fact that this impunity and crass disrespect to legality and constitutionality are being perpetrated under a government that is itself a beneficiary of respect for the rule of law by the then PDP government.

“That the nation’s parliamentarians and their leadership could brazenly be treated like criminals under a democratic setting simply because of political differences is truly an unsettling descent into wanton abuse of power by those sworn to ‘preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’. This descent into the abyss must be halted and reversed.

“These strong-arm tactic adopted by the Police is a setback to our developing democracy and a serious dent on the standing of Nigeria as a bastion of hope in the comity of democratic nations in Africa and it further accentuates the fears of many Nigerians that rather than consolidate on the gains of the 2015 transition, the nation’s democracy is not only stagnant, but being dangerously driven into the precipice by those who ordinarily, ought to know better.”This brazen abuse of power, underscores Senator Makarfi’s popular refrain of recent about the need to, as Nigerians respond to the cries of restructuring, look critically at institutions such as the police and others with a view to restructuring them to make them serve the state rather than continue to operate at the whims and caprices of political leaders.

“Senator Makarfi appeals to Nigerians to remain peaceful but vigilant and do everything within the law to stand up against forces bent on reversing our democracy gains.

“He equally calls on the Police and other security agencies to be professional in the discharge of their duties and never forget the fact that their loyalty is to the Nigerian nation, and not the holders of the levers of its political power, as there will always be a Tomorrow.

“The Senator also welcomes the many Senators and members of the House of Representatives who have taken the wise decision to return home to the PDP and assure them of his personal commitment to play his own part, to ensure that the party truly welcomes them back.

  • Don’t derail Nigeria’s democracy, Southwest PDP urges Buhari

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest on Tuesday urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to initiate actions against moves to derail democracy in Nigeria.

The party in a statement by its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Ayo Fadaka criticized the manner ‘despotic’ democracy under President Muhammadu was gaining ascendancy.

It reads “The Police action taken again the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekeremadu clearly is an abuse of the fundamental human rights of the duo and also an abuse of power privileges.

“No excuse or reason can justify the prosecution of this cheap and pedestrian action; these gentlemen are no criminals that should be hounded by the police who should clearly devote their time squarely to ridding our nation of the many criminal elements that torture the citizenry daily”.

According to the statement, the police invitation to Saraki was in furtherance of the petty attempt to rope him into the now famous Offa robbery, stressing that President Buhari and his handlers should know that irrespective of concoctions in this regard, the eminent and illustrious background of Saraki will never make them to stick.

PDP said” We know this smokescreen is to hound him because of the obvious fact that 15 Senators on Tuesday abandoned the sinking APC ship for the PDP.

“The choice of political party is an inalienable right of every citizen and no power can hold those who have chosen to leave back in the APC.

“President Buhari must also realize that he has since dropped his beret and jackboots, therefore, only persuasion and sincerity of purpose are required to populate any Party”.

The opposition party congratulated the fifteen Senators for taking the bold step to dump a party that exhibits absolute intolerance, incoherence and incompetence in the administration of our dear nation.

“Nigeria today is tottering dangerously on a precipice on account of these factors; a nation that was enjoying near absolute peace in 2015 is experiencing mayhem of differing proportions across board.

“The APC’s government of President Buhari has sentenced over 83 percent of our population to penury and life has become so unbearable”.

“Nigerians today need a new lease of life and therefore call on many still hibernating in APC to bolt out of the Party now reputed for its failed promises, deceit and incompetence.

“We wish to point out that there exists a great danger to our democracy and this is apparent by the many attacks on perceived opponents or enemies of the Buhari administration, democracy is not the same with despotism.

The party noted that Constitution must be respected, while institutions like the National Assembly and Judiciary too must equally be respected.

It noted that if truly this action against Saraki and Ekeremadu was being taken to forestall a sitting of the Senate with a view to preventing scores of APC Senators from decamping, it is pedestrian and disappointing.

The statement recalled that former President Jonathan experienced similar actions in 2013 and exhibited maturity by taking all in his strides, urging President Buhari to follow his worthy example.

  • Bindow condemns report linking him with Atiku’s rally

Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa has described as “malicious and false” an online report alleging that he gave N70 million to organisers of Saturday’s rally in Yola by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Bindow in a statement Sunday by his Special Adviser Press and Media Affairs, Mr Martins Dickson, said the report trying to portray him as engaging in anti party activities was cheap blackmail by those worried over his rising profile and that of APC in the state.

“The publication is false, malicious, misleading and an attempt to mask the rising profile, good virtues and sacrifice of Sen. Bindow in upholding and promoting APC as the most popular party in Adamawa.

“The authors of the fabricated lies have run out of substance with which to discredit him and have resorted to cheap blackmail and childish stories.”

The statement urged journalists and the media to always strive to verify their facts and be professional in their operation.

“The good work of APC under Bindow is spread glaringly across the 21 local government areas of the state for all to see and there’s no amount of falsehood that will make anyone believe that a governor and party that have done so well in the state will be involved in any form of clandestine anti-party activity”.

The statement reiterated the governor’s commitment to remain focused on fulfilling his campaign promises in line with his party’s manifesto.

  • Why I dumped the PDP, by Cross River senatorial aspirant

Mr. Kammonke Abam believes he is not your typical Nigerian politician. The youthful media entrepreneur is aspiring to go to the senate in 2019 where he seeks to represent the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State. He recently resigned from his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in protest against alleged discrimination and injustice against his people. He spoke to Nicholas Kalu. Excerpts:

WHY did you resign from the PDP? My resignation is a statement of protest against the stealthy plan to deny those of us from the Old Obubra axis of the party and particularly Ugep, the opportunity to fly the party’s flag. We believe it is historically justified for the position to be zoned to us. We perceive a surreptitious plan to weaken us out of the race and give the ticket to one of their cronies in Old Ikom even though the senate seat has been domiciled in Old Ikom in the past 19 years. Next year, 2019, would be exactly 20 years of Old Ikom producing senators representing the Central Senatorial District. We believe it is unfair for the party to still want to keep it in Old Ikom. It has become very obvious that the political scale is deliberately and unfairly tilted to favour Old Ikom. The way things are going, some of us have decided to leave the party for them while we seek alternative platforms that respect our wishes and provide a level playing ground for all aspirants. This is after a careful study and analysis of the political patterns and recent history. The case of Ugep, where I come from is particularly disheartening. In the last 20 years, there seems to be a gang up against the political development of the people of Ugep. It happened in 1999; it repeated itself over the years and may happen again next year if we do not wake up from our slumber. We are determined to do our best to scuttle that sad history from repeating itself. We deserve to be treated better.

Could you give us more background on this?

The background to this development is that the Cross River Central Senatorial District is made up of six local government areas. Three of them, Ikom, Boki and Etung are contiguous to each other and used to be under one local government area called Ikom, while the other three, Yakurr, Abi and Obubra are also contiguous to each other and also used to be under one local government area called Obubra. For political expediency, the senatorial district is clustered into Old Ikom and Old Obubra. That way, political offices are meant to be distributed equitably and fairly. At the emergence of the 4th Republic in 1999, the senate seat went to Old Ikom. Senator Mathew Mbu, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba and now, Senator John Owan-Enoh became senators on account of this arrangement. Next year, 2019, would be exactly 20 years that Old Ikom is occupying the seat and those of us in Old Obubra are saying it is time power changed hands so we can also send one of us to represent the senatorial district. Is it a bad thing for us to say we want to share in what belongs to us all? My brother is it bad? The defence they put forward is that Senator Liyel Imoke represented the district in 1992. Funny enough, just for a little over a year. They also argued that Old Obubra has produced two governors in the person of Chief Clement Ebri and Senator Liyel Imoke. While that is true, the office of the governor is a state-wide office. It is not restricted to the Central Senatorial District. So, that argument does not hold water. In any case, the issue right now is that the party that should look at variables that gives it comparative advantage to win the forthcoming election by picking someone from Old Obubra seems to throw caution to the wind by doing everything to favour a particular candidate from Old Ikom. My quitting the party is my own response against this perceived injustice.

Why didn’t you decide to stay in the PDP and try to fight this from within?

That is exactly what we have been doing in the recent past. They say it’s a mad man who does the same thing and expects different results. We’ve fought and are still fighting to have these issues addressed but hasn’t received the attention it deserves. That’s why we have changed strategy. You know, it is politics. There are obviously some people benefitting from Old Obubra and particularly, Ugep not having a voice in the National Assembly. It does appear as if there are sworn enemies determined to keep the Ugep man out of the power loop perpetually. And from the look of things, if we don’t put our acts together and we miss this golden opportunity, we may not be able to do so in the next eight years. I will be satisfied if by this act, the leadership of the party rethinks and an Ugep man is given the ticket of the party. As for me, I shall pursue my future political journey in another platform that will be receptive and respectful of the political interest and views of our people.

What effect do you think this will have on the polity?

Politics is about communication and negotiation. We want to draw the attention of the world to the unfairness against the people of Old Obubra and Ugep in particular. We believe that the people of Old Obubra and Ugep in particular deserve a better deal in the politics of Cross River State and there is no better time to make that statement than now. My interest is to bring this long agitation to the front burner of the political discourse of Cross River State. Attention must be paid to Old Obubra and particularly, to Ugep more than it currently is. We have the numbers to make a difference. Truth is Ugep has been taken for a ride for a long time because our political leaders do not seem to realise the huge political capital that Ugep has or they simply aren’t negotiating well enough. And this just must stop. We have the energy, the numbers, and the resources to take this through

You seem very upset by this?

Yes, why not. Anyone in our shoes as a people will be. It’s as if there is a deliberate calculation to put Ugep down politically. Since the days of Dr. Okoi Arikpo, those with the privilege of calling the shots of power have deliberately choked my community, Ugep, of political breath. At the level of Ugep, we have been meeting for some time to chart a new political course and order that will restore the political glory that Ugep once had. It’s a move to restore the voice of the Ugep man and woman. We’ve been taken for granted for too long and we cannot continue like this. The fact remains that once we put our act together, Ugep will continue to decide where the political pendulum of the Central Senatorial District will swing.

Do you think that your people will support you on this?

This matter is not about me. It has nothing to do with my person. It’s a call that well-meaning persons from Old Obubra and particularly, Ugep have been concerned about. I am just accentuating the issues.

    What next now?

We have concluded plans to move to another political party that is more receptive to our interests and the values we stand for.

  • NEF’s Elders Summit and state of the nation

It is the age of the alliance. As the nation hurtles towards the 2019 general elections, more Nigerians are discovering that there is power in making common cause on political issues.

First, it was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) corralling more than 30 other parties into the contraption called Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), whose sole aim is toppling President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

Then last Wednesday, an ‘Extraordinary Summit of Leaders and Elders of Nigeria’ was convoked in Abuja at the instance of Professor Ango Abdullahi’s Northern Elders Forum (NEF). Aside the grand title of the event, the list of attendees was equally impressive.

It is not every day that you gather the NEF, Ohaneze N’digbo, Afenifere, Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and sundry others in one room, and emerge with an agreement. For each of these groups set their stall as ethnic and religious champions whose interests hardly cohere.

Into the midst of these sectional leaders, the conveners parachuted Buhari’s bete noire former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who loves to posture as the arch-nationalist, as guest speaker – thereby setting the stage for what you would have expected to be a fractious gathering.

But agree they did. In a communique titled: ‘State of the Nation: The Rising Spate of Killings Must Stop’, the leaders and elders condemned the bloodletting, called for the emergence of a new dynamic and visionary leadership, as well as resolved to work towards the restructuring of the country.

The communique must have made for grim reading at the Presidential Villa as the summit returned a damning verdict on Buhari’s stewardship with regards to the economy, security and corruption – the three pillars of his 2015 election campaign. On each item they handed him a failing grade, rounding it up by dismissing his performance as incompetent.

Their call for a ‘new visionary and dynamic leadership’ to lead Nigeria out of its present crisis was certainly no endorsement of the president’s second term bid.

The Presidency hit back in a cutting response by Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, which dismissed the gathering as an unholy alliance of selfish leaders motivated by hunger.

HeHHe accused them of shedding crocodile tears because they felt alienated by an incumbent who had introduced a transparent and accountable system which disrupted their disproportionate survival on resources of the state.

Shehu then reels off a number of ongoing security interventions in Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kaduna and Niger States to debunk the suggestion that his principal was merely sitting on his haunches while the country bled to death.

With the battle line between Buhari and the old political elite – north and south – sharply drawn, it is tempting even if you are not a presidential spokesman to question the motives of the summiteers. Many have been active participants in government at all levels from as far back as the 70s. They, Obasanjo included, had every opportunity to move the country in a better direction but blew their chance.

They could have restructured the country economically and politically but were among some of the most vociferous voices that have pushed for the sustenance of our virtually unitary system of government. They could have been visionary and foreseen signs that the minor economic and sectarian problems they left to fester would one day threaten to break up the country.

So, Shehu may have a point that a lot of the finger-pointing is hypocritical coming from many who helped to create the mess that now requires cleaning. The downside for the president and his team is that, our history notwithstanding, they were elected to clean it all up. It is too late in the day to moan about the scale of the exercise or the motivations of the ever-present army of faultfinders.

No matter how unfair the critics may be, Buhari and his team must ask themselves whether, in the context of what the nation is passing through, their solutions are enough? Defensiveness would not do. Saying that the killings didn’t start under your watch, or that the body count was higher under the Goodluck Jonathan administration, is a totally unacceptable position.

Although Shehu listed several ongoing military operations, it should alarm everyone that in spite of all he says is being done, so much bloodletting continues. It really goes beyond effort; it is all about the efficacy of what is being done. When Boko Haram was bombing major cities back in 2013 and 2014, the Jonathan administration also regaled us with all it was doing to battle to sect.

To be fair, the Buhari government has done well with blunting the insurgency. The Islamist group is no longer the frightening force it was in 2014/2015.  The government equally deserves commendation for the number of Chibok girls it has rescued, as well as its quick response that led to the return of almost all the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls – leaving only Leah Sharibu as a sore point.

Boko Haram maybe on the wane, but the overall security picture is bad news for the government. In terms of numbers and perception, the bloodshed of the last few years clearly surpasses any other period in recent peace time Nigeria.

Herdsmen killings in the Middle-Belt, savage banditry in the Sokoto-Zamfara axis, and the swarm of kidnappers around Kogi, Abuja, Kaduna and many others parts of the country, have obliterated whatever feel-good dividend Buhari expected to reap from his successes in the Northeast.

Indeed, the gravity of the situation was captured recently by former Kaduna State Governor Balarabe Musa who said the kidnappers had become so evil they have taken to abducting poor Almajiris from isolated farms and asking for ransom as low as N3,000.

A person who would abduct another human being for as low as N3,000 is really not much of a kidnapper; he’s just a desperately hungry fellow whose only solution is base criminality.

One direct consequences of the abduction epidemic is that farming takes a hit. The herdsmen killings also have the same effect – compounding poverty and the country’s larger economic problems.

What is happening is very complex and cannot be easily attributed to just one or two reasons. Clearly, the parlous state of the economy is a major factor. A clichéd expression speaks of the devil finding work for idle hands.

There are environmental problems at play as desertification forces herdsmen down south where their unrestrained encroachment on farmlands sparks conflict and killings.

There are the x-factors. Many of Nigeria’s immediate neighbours to the east and north are seething with conflict: from separatist groups in Cameroun to the untamed regions of Libya, there is unceasing flow of small arms that end up in the hands of criminals.

The president and his team would also have us believe that some of the killings are sponsored by politicians. My problem with this is that the government with all its powers has not moved against those it accuses. That is hard to understand.

At different times agents of government have highlighted these points. But to my mind the biggest challenge remains economic. Until the economy is sorted out, a thousand military taskforces would not pacify this land. We would never have enough soldiers and policeman to keep watch over isolated villages, farmlands and highways north and south.

The Elders Summit communique mentioned new statistics that claim Nigeria now has more poor people than India. It should surprise no one that this dubious distinction coincides with the nation’s serious security crisis.

  • 2019 – ‘I am coming to reclaim my stolen mandate’

The 2015 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Alex Otti said that he is coming to contest 2019 gubernatorial election in the state in order to reclaim his 2015 election that was allegedly stolen by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Otti while officially declaring his intention to run for the governorship position under APGA at the Ngwa High School playground in Osisioma Local Government Area of the state, expressed worries that the incumbent administration led by Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu was yet to address majority of the issues that prompted him to abandon his lucrative and plump job to come and govern the state.

Otti who maintained that his loss to the PDP in 2015 was clear case of electoral robbery by the PDP who he accused of using federal might to overturn the party’s victory in 2015, but however stated that it will no longer be business as usual.

The financial expert and former MD/CEO of Diamond Bank while assuring party faithful and his supporters that the party would become victorious in 2019, promised to deploy his wealth of experience in the private and public sector to bring the state out of its state of slavery. This is even as he stated that it was high time the state was redeemed from the hands of godfathers who do not think well for the state.

“I’m declaring for 2019 to reclaim the mandate you people gave me in 2015. Despite whoever that is occupying the Government House, the person that is ruling Abia today is T.A Orji. Abia is not his personal  property, I am on a mission to rescue my people from the Pharaohs of Abia and there will be no retreat and no surrender; they must let our people go this time around. ”

Read Also: Ekiti: We will reclaim mandate in court, says Fayose

Urging people of the state not to allow themselves to be deceived again on where he comes from, Otti said he was proud to say although he has Arochukwu ancestry, that he was born and bred in Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government.

He said the same could not be said of some of his political opponents who have made this a political issue and whose ancestry he enthused had been traced to Itim Ekpo in Akwa Ibom state.

“I am all round an Abia man, I have an Arochukwu ancestry, I’m not denying that and I was born and bred in Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa Local Government, but we have traced the ancestry of some of those who have made this a political issue, to Etim Ikpo in Akwa Ibom State and people can now tell who is more Abian”.

Otti said if elected governor next year, he would change the narratives of the state, assuring that he will not only ensure the state prospers economically, but also ensure her workforce will not suffer as a result of nonpayment of salaries, gratuities and pensions.

In their various speeches, the State Chairman of APGA, Reverend Agustine Ehiemere, Senator Victor Umeh, and the Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano represented by his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke described Otti as a man with impeccable character, intelligence and of good repute who have distinguished himself in both public and private sectors of the economy.

According to them, Otti with the experience he has been able to garner would be the most qualified candidate to lead the state out of its present state of doldrums.

Obiano while urging Abians to give Otti the needed support said that the government of Anambra and leadership of the APGA have the confidence that if elected the governor of the state would replicate the APGA transformation in Anambra and also add to the number of governor in the southeast that would help to ensure that they use their influence and connection to draw the attention of the federal government to plight of the Igbos in the southeast in particular.

High point of the event was the receiving of the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ikpeazu on ICT, Tony Onyenweaku who decamped from the Peoples Democratic Party to APGA officially by the leadership of the party.

  • Eight PDP governorship aspirants opt for consensus in Kaduna

No fewer than eight governorship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State have agreed to come out with a consensus candidate for the 2019 election.

“Eight of us seeking for the party ticket have been urged by our party to go, discuss among ourselves and come out with a consensus candidate.

“We are all qualified and capable, but as members of the same family we do not have room for internal crisis usually associated with primary elections.

“To me, this is a unity of purpose. All we want is victory comes 2019 elections, not only for our party but primarily for the people of Kaduna State, whom we hope to represent and serve, “he said.

He said that the measure would enable the party channel all its resources, expertise and energy into ensuring that it put up a good fight and wrestle power from the APC.

He identified the other aspirants as Malam Isah Ashiru, Mohammed Sani Bello; Bello Kagarko; Sani Sidi; Jonathan Kish; Ramalan Yero the immediate past governor of the state; and Shuaibu Mikati.

“Our central goal is to beat the APC and its candidate, as such, the need for PDP, being a one united family to work together for the interest of the party and the people of the state.

“Eight of us were at the meeting on Tuesday, except for Ashiru who sent a representative.

“We embraced the idea with all our heart. We will commence sitting hopefully this week to bring out one candidate that will beat the APC come 2019 elections,” he assured.

Confirming the decision, Malam Ibrahim Wusono, the PDP Secretary in the state, said that it was a collective agreement of the party executives, elders and members.

“We have the option of either coming out with a consensus candidate out of the eight currently vying for the gubernatorial ticket, or conducting an election if we could not reach a consensus.

“As party executive, we met with members, elders of the party; former Vice President Namadi Sambo and Mohammed Makarfi among others to decide on the way forward.

“Our leaders assured us that they do not have a candidate, that their candidate is the people’s candidate.

“We summoned a meeting on Tuesday July 17 to see the possibility of a consensus candidate that will be acceptable by members and the people of Kaduna State; someone who if elected will be a leader of all.

“And if not possible, then we will have to conduct election when the time comes. But we were happy when the eight aspirants bought the idea and promised to get back to us very soon.”

Wusono, however, said that if another aspirants emerge after the consensus candidate has been decided, the party would not deny him the opportunity to aspire for the governorship ticket.

“We will ask such a person to meet with the consensus candidate and decide who should carry the flag. If that fails then we will have to conduct an election,” Wusono added.

  • Ekiti poll: PDP accuses INEC of doctoring results

The national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of doctoring the results of last Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State.

Dr. Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the election, beating the PDP candidate, Prof Kolapo Olusola.

In a statement on Wednesday by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party said it reached the conclusion after a crucial meeting Tuesday night, where all the facts relating to the election were received and reviewed.

“After a thorough examination of all hard facts, the NWC reconfirms that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) doctored the result of the election to favour the All Progressives Congress (APC)”, the party said.

The party noted that apart from huge discrepancies between the actual votes cast at the polling centres and the results released by INEC, there were evidence that INEC pulled down the original result from its data base to accommodate the alterations.

The statement continued, “The NWC also has evidence indicating that the original result was in favour of the PDP candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka before the figures were altered.

“The NWC, after very exhaustive examination of all facts reconfirms that the PDP candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka, clearly won the July 14, 2018 governorship election.

“The NWC therefore calls on the leadership of INEC to immediately correct their results, apologise to the people of Ekiti state and be ready to admit their falsifications before the tribunal so as to return our mandate which was stolen at ‘gun point’ on July 14”.
