  • Cross River: APC alleges killing of members

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has alleged the killing of several of its members, who refused to be compromised, during the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections by agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led state government.

The party, which made the accusation in a statement by its acting chairman, John Ochala, rejected the results of the election, which saw the PDP emerge winners.

The statement, made available to The Nation in Calabar reads, “The All Progressives Congress, Cross River State, hereby informs the general public, that, we dissociate ourselves from this rape of democracy in the name of Governorship and State House of Assembly Elections. We are all witnesses to the daylight robbery of our collective will and mandate, led by the PDP state government in active connivance with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives.

”Despite the very responsible manner in which our teeming party faithful and supporters went about their civic responsibility, the PDP in desperation to perpetuate their evil agenda killed several of our members who refused to compromise and resisted the vote stuffing carried out by the PDP.

”We call on all APC members and well-wishers to remain calm and go about their lawful duties without let or hindrance while the party leadership explores all avenues within legal limits to correct this aberration.”

Also addressing reporters in Calabar, the governorship candidate of the Young Democratic Party (YDP), Emmanuel Undie, rejected the results saying there were no elections in the state.

Undie accused the security agencies and INEC of colluding with agents of the PDP to rig the elections.

He vowed to pursue all constitutional means to ensure the exercise is cancelled.

”There were no elections in Cross River State. It was not free and fair, a lot of people were disenfranchised and there was no safety and security for the people. I personally saw SUVs filled with thugs with automatic weapons moving freely with government number plates.

”We witnessed carting away of materials by thugs, multiple thumb printing. There was also swapping of result sheets, hence whatever happened in the field was an exercise in futility. People only went out to waste their time. The police, who were supposed to protect law-abiding citizens, were aiding thugs against the citizens. The results were cooked up,” he alleged.

  • Obasanjo to Makinde: Don’t pocket Oyo state govt.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday advised the Oyo State Governor-elect, Seyi Makinde, not to run a Democratic system that would put the government of the state in his pocket.

Obasanjo said Makinde has the onerous task of striving to transform the capital of former old Western Region, urging the people to keep supporting him to succeed when eventually sworn-in.

The elder statesman gave the advice when he received the Governor-elect, his Deputy, Rauf Olaniyan, Oyo state chairman of PDP, Kunmi Mustapha, Bose Adedibu, wife of late Lamidi Adedibu, Lagos state PDP chairman, Dominic Agboola among others at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun state.

The ex-Head of States described such government that serves narrow interest as “democratic so sa po”, meaning pocketing democratic system for personal gains against true democratic system.

He also advised Makinde to shun corruption.

“Be transparent and embark on developmental projects, which would be a delight to the people of Oyo state. Please run a government that will be making them ask, where have this type of government been all these years in Oyo state.

“You must give them something (positive), you must give them good democracy and not that one my younger brothers will call democratic so sa po’ (pocketing democracy).

“Where there is misunderstanding, call yourselves( your people) together and make peace in the overall interest of Oyo state.

“He cannot do it alone and since you have supported him now, you should continue to be together. You should be mindful that Oyo people are fearless and they don’t mind, whose oars is gored, that is why you are there now,” Obasanjo stated.

He promised to support the incoming new government and be available anytime his service is needed.

In his response, Makinde said the visit was meant to appreciate Baba Obasanjo and seeks wisdom from the elder statesman.

The Governor-elect admitted that Oyo state was “in a bad shape but pledged to apply wisdom to make things better.

“He had warned against corruption and transparency. We are very much aware of this too. With God, Oyo state will never be the same again. This is the type of visit that will give us the needed tonic to forge ahead positively in Oyo state,” he said.

The former Deputy Chairman (South) of the People’s Democratic Party, Chief Olabode George who facilitated the visit, said he called Obasanjo barely 24hours ago to fix the appointment.

“I want to thank him for granting us audience within the short notice,” George said.

  • Ijaws leaders task Okowa on development of riverine communities

The People’s Democratic Party leaders from the Ijaws ethnic nationality have tasked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and governor-elect of Delta State to aggressively focus on the development of the riverine Ijaw communities in the state.

The PDP Ijaw leaders who spoke through Chief Julius Bobuoghan and Chief Torulolo Love, in a statement obtained by the Nation, also enjoined other PDP Delta House of Assembly members-elect across the state to join hands with Governor Okowa to “collaborate towards connecting the riverine communities in Forcados and Escravos Areas to the upland by road networks within the next four years.”

While congratulating Governor Okowa for his victory at the just concluded poll, the Ijaw leaders said the re-election of Governor Okowab was an indication of his wide acceptance across the three senatorial districts of the state.

The Ijaw leaders said Governor Okowa was a rare politician in Nigeria, stressing that the visible transformation of Delta State into an enviable height made Okowa’s re-election very easy.

They enjoined Deltans to rally round the governor and be ready for more developmental strides during his second term.

The Ijaw leaders also assured Deltans, particularly their primary constituency, Burutu local government area, that Governor Okowa would embark on more developmental projects in the area.

According to the statement, “We congratulate the deputy governor, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro, distinguished Senator James Manager, Senator-elect, Delta South Senatorial district; Rt. Hon. Julius Pondi, as member-elect, Burutu Federal Constituency, House of Representatives; Hon. Asupa Forteta, member-elect, Delta State House of Assembly, Burutu constituency I; and Mr. Emomotimi Guwor, member-elect, Delta State House of Assembly, Warri South-West constituency.”

The leaders also expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP 2019 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar will be victorious at the tribunal.

  • Igini: My accusers wanted to buy me over

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom, Mike Igini, has finally opened up on allegations against him in the conduct of the February 23 and March 9 elections.

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have accused him of colluding with Governor Udom Emmanuel to rig the elections in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But Igini, in a telephone interview with the Nation in Uyo on Wednesday evening, said his accusers were the very people who tried unsuccessfully to buy him over.

He alleged they induced him to compromise his integrity and constitutional responsibility to superintend over a free and fair electoral process.

Though he did not mention names of those who tried to lure him into shifting grounds on the elections, he revealed he was invited by some politicians to a secret meeting abroad, which he declined.

”The very people who wanted me to compromise are those who are accusing me.

“Those who wanted me to travel abroad to hold a secret meeting with and them and I said no.

”I said why do you want to go abroad and discuss the affairs of an electoral process outside Nigeria?

“Why do you want me to enter aero plane and go to where? If you want to have a meeting with me, come to my office.

”Since I have been in this state, anybody who says he has given me pure water(sachet water) let him or her come forward and say so.

“All those who contested the elections whether in PDP or APC or any party I don’t know them other than their lists of the names.

”As I speak to you, I don’t have their contacts, even those who won. If I see them on the way, I won’t recognise them,” Igini said.

The Akwa Ibom REC said some politicians in the state have refused to come to terms with the fact that the old tradition of writing fictitious results was over.

He added that since 1999 no genuine elections have been conducted in the state until the one under his watch.

”In Akwa Ibom, apart from 1999 they have not been delivering ballot papers results sheets to polling units.

“They have been writing results in Akwa Ibom state. There were no genuine elections in the state and I said there has to be a paradigm shift to the side of the will of the people,” he said.

Spokesperson APC campaigns in Akwa Ibom, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh who reacted to the allegations, challenged Igini to mention names of his accusers who tried to compromise him as well as the country he was invited to for a secret meeting.

”The principle of law is very clear that whoever alleges should prove. If he has made such an allegation, then he has to prove just like the APC has made allegations against him.

”APC has substantially proven that how can a political party become your image manager.

“Look at the Vanguard newspaper of 28 January, page 39. Chieftains of the PDP paid for an advertorial threatening the INEC chairman not to redeploy Igini. Are they his employers?

”We have also told you that he(Igini) had a meeting with civil society forum, which he told them clearly and it is on record that under his watch APC can’t go anywhere in Akwa Ibom,” he said.

  • Lagos PDP: what next for Agbaje?

The Lagos State governorship election has been won and lost. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Jimi Agbaje, has conceded defeat and congratulated the winner, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The question is: what next for Agbaje, the pharmacist-turned politician? Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU writes on the effects of the defeat on the opposition platform.

He was optimistic of winning. During his campaigns in some parts of Lagos State, shouts of ‘Jay Kay is okay,’ always filled the air. Jimi Agbaje, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, is an eminent Lagosians held in esteem by many stakeholders. But, at the close of polls at the weekend, he saw the handwriting on the wall. Reality dawned on the pharmacist-turned politician that his vehicle, the PDP, could not carry him too far.

At 7.07 pm, shortly before the formal announcement of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he conceded defeat and congratulated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was at the party secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja, warming up for a victory speech. The governor-elect thanked his major challenger for the kind gesture. He later broke the news to party chieftains who surrounded him in that moment of history.

The recent election was Agbaje’s third attempt. He was in the race in 2007 and 2015. Despite past electoral defeats, he was full of enthusiasm and optimism during the campaigns. He was vocal and some people listened to him. His campaign slogan was: ‘freedom.’ Irked by the slogan, APC stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu decried the mobilisation approach, saying that Lagos was not in bondage.

Party women, who composed partisan songs, fired salvos at Agbaje, describing him as a familiar customer. Replying them, the PDP candidate said: ‘the customer is king.” But, on poll day, his supporters were drowned in their illusion of hope.

According to a report, the multi-millionaire politician has rationalised his party’s failure at the polls. He complained about voters’ apathy, which he attributed to alleged intimidation of his supporters. He said many shunned the polling booths because of fear of violence. The APC Chairman, Tunde Balogun disagreed. He said the elections were peaceful, free and fair.

For the PDP, the impact of the defeat is monumental. For 20 years, it has been the major opposition party in the Centre of Excellence. Its ambition to hijack power had crumbed six times. According to observers, Agbaje has been its most formidable and promising candidate in post-Funso Williams era. In 1999, its candidate, Chief Dapo Sarunmi, lost to Asiwaju Tinubu. In 2003, the late Williams also lost. In 2007, Musiliu Obanikoro and Agbaje, who contested on the platform of the Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA), lost to Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN). In 2011, Ade Dosunmu could not fly. In 2015, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode also defeated Agbaje. In 2019, Agbaje, who has become a veteran contender, also lost to Sanwo-Olu.

The implication is that Lagos PDP has been left in the cold for two decades. Many PDP leaders have jumped ship and gravitated towards the ruling party. Ahead of the weekend polls, scores of PDP members deserted the party. Even, the party chairman, Adegoke Salvador, quit the platform.

Agbaje is a household name in Lagos. He is admired by many people across political parties. As a pharmacist and businessman, he had made money and name. Many people see him as a man of honour and integrity. He rose to political fame as the treasurer of  Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group.

Eyes were not on him until he threw his hat into the ring in 2007. Althoigh he had no pubic sector experience, he pulled crowd ahead of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), later Action Congress (AC) primary. Other aspirants included Fashola, former Deputy Governor Olufemi Pedro, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, former Commerce and Industry Commissioner Remi Adikwu Bakare, former party chairman Abiodun Ogunleye, Oyinlomo Danmole, Kaoli Olusanya, Ganiyu Solomon, Erikitola, Kunle Lawal, and Tola Kasali.

However, the shadow poll did not favour Agbaje, who alleged that it was not free and fair. Although party leaders offered him the Lagos Central senatorial ticket, he rejected it.

To spite the former governor and party leader, Agbaje, Afikuyomi, Danmole, Lawal, and Adikwu-Bakare defected to DPA. A week after, Afikuyomi went to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and emerged its governorship candidate. Pedro left for the Labour Party (LP), and later, the PDP. Surprisingly, Afikuyomi later showed up on election day as Fashola’s agent at the INEC office.

In DPA, Agbaje floored Adikwu-Bakare during at the primary. Another aggrieved aspirant, the late Prof. Lawal, became his running mate. Adikwu-Bakare hurriedly left for Progressive Peoples Alliance(PPA). She lost her deposit at the poll.

The campaign was interesting. The contenders-Fashola (AC), Agbaje (DPA), Adikwu- Bakare (PPA), Afikuyomi (ANPP) and Musiliu Obanikoro (PDP)–were locked in a war of sorts. Before the primaries, they belonged to AD, an offshoot of Afenifere.

Agbaje’s manifestos were not significantly different from the promises made to Lagosians by Fashola and Adikwu-Bakare. Except Obanikoro’s PDP, the competing parties were similar. Throughout the campaign, Agbaje and Fashola only disagreed on one point, which was the viability of the Fourth Mainland Bridge. While Agbaje said it was not a priority, Fashola insisted that the people needed it for ease of transportation. Up to now, it has remained a tall order.

However, feathers were ruffled. The parties were enveloped in anxiety. An eloquent speaker, Agbaje ran a neat campaign devoid of thuggery, unlike the PDP train of cutlasses, clubs, bows and arrows. His adverts, including radio and television jingles,  were captivating. Excited at the way the campaign had progressed, his associate, Yinka Odumakin, said Agbaje offered a credible alternative to the ‘same of the same.’

There was apprehension during the televised debate. Agbaje was confronted by Pedro, who had inquired from him, derisively, the experience that qualified him to vie for the governor of Lagos as the owner of  a patient medicine store, with not more than five employees under his control. The DPA candidate noted the scornful look and the attempt to diminish his profile. Returning the missiles, Agbaje  reminded Pedro that when he was a managing director of a bank, he was a shareholder and a director, which implied part ownership. The pharmacist also asked the banker to explain the circumstances that led to his exit from the bank.  Besides, he added that the former deputy governor should respond to the allegation by his boss that he had not properly rendered his account of stewardship. Pedro flared up, taking exception to Agbaje’s remarks. He explained that when he left the bank, the organization held a befitting send-forth for him.

Despite the enormous electoral investment, Agbaje came third, trailing Obanikoro, who was defeated by Fashola.  The love of Lagosians for Agbaje was undermined by a corresponding reluctance to adopt his party by voters. He was a strong contender hindered by his weak party.

Following the defeat, Agbaje protested, claiming that his photograph or logo disappeared on the ballot paper. He went to the tribunal, urging the temple of justice to upturn Fashola’s victory. His prayer was rejected.

In 2011, Agbaje did not contest. Although APC leaders were said to have offered the position of deputy governor to him, he rejected it. But, he remained a public figure who commented on national issues.

In 2015, he finally yielded to pressures to run on the platform of the PDP. Backed by the PDP leader, Chief Olabode George, he defeated Obanikoro at the primary. His chance was bright. Former President Goodluck Jonathan threw his weight behind him. Also, members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) were on the prowl. Agbaje rallied Igbo residents behind his ambition. Although PDP won some House of Assembly and Representatives seats, Agbaje was defeated by Ambode.

After the election, crisis broke out between Agbaje and George. The retired soldier wanted to be the PDP national chairman. Agbaje, who enjoyed the support of  Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his Ekiti State counterpart, Ayo Fayose, also unfolded a chairmanship ambition. But, the crown later went to Prince Uche Secondus, who was sponsored by the PDP governors.

During last year’s primary, Agbaje defeated Deji Doherty, who does not enjoy his kind of popularity. But, at the close of poll at the weekend, there was gap between expectation and reality. Sanwo-Olu polled 739, 44 5 votes to defeat Agbaje who got 206, 141 votes.

What future awaits PDP in Lagos? What next for Agbaje, its symbol? Will he return to the drawing board, restrategise and rebuild the party into a winning platform? Will he return to his shell? Will he quit the politics? In four years’ time, will Agbaje re-contest?

  • PDP’s Ashiru rejects Kaduna gov results, heads to court

Kaduna State gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party ( PDP ), Hon. Isa Ashiru, has rejected results of the contest, vowing to challenge the outcome at the election petitions tribunal.

Ashiru alleged militarisation of the electoral process in various part of the state, arguing “military personnel were used to intimidate voters particularly in the areas where our party has an overwhelming strength and support.”

The PDP gubernatorial candidate, who addressed a press conference at his Kaduna home few hours after the declaration of El-Rufai as winner, also alleged Smart Card Readers were not used during the elections in a lot of polling units in Giwa, Birnin Gwari, Kaduna North, Igabi, Zaria, Lere and Ikara Local Government Areas.

According to Ashiru: “I wish to state without any fear of contradiction that reports obtained by our party from across the State indicate that the elections were marred by a lot of irregularities.

“It is on the basis of these established irregularities that our party in a petition to the State Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, rejected the results and called for its outright cancellation.

“Available reports have shown that Smart Card Readers were not used during the elections in a lot of polling units in Giwa, Birnin Gwari, Kaduna North, Igabi, Zaria, Lere and Ikara Local Government Areas.

“It is our firm believe that the non-usage of the Card Readers which is a violation of the electoral guidelines have rendered the results from these areas invalid and should have been cancelled.

“Another issue of concern to our party was the clear militarisation of the electoral process in various parts of the State as military personnel were used to intimidate voters particularly in the areas where our party has an overwhelming strength and support.

“Of a particular example is the use of military in Birnin Gwari and Kauru local government areas. Soldiers were also used to alter the result of our House of Assembly candidate to in Makera Constituency of Kaduna South local government area.

“I am sure a lot of People in Kaduna State will consider it unbelievable the disparity between the numbers of votes obtained in the Presidential elections and the Governorship elections.

“How could the people of Kaduna State be convinced the APC could get more votes during the governorship elections than it got in the last Presidential elections?”

He went on: “Based on this and other irregularities, I hereby stand by the position of my party to challenge the concocted results at the election tribunal to get back our stolen mandate.

“On this note, I therefore call on our supporters and citizens of Kaduna State to remain calm and be law abiding.”

  • Oyo APC demands arrest of PDP’s Makinde

As the final collation of results across the local governments is ongoing, the Oyo state chapter of the ruling All Progressive Congress has submitted a petition against the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate Seyi Makinde to the electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The APC petition accused Makinde of what it described as “breach of electoral laws” and thereby demanded for his immediate arrest and prosecution.

The petition addressed to the Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner and entitled “Petition Against Engr. Seyi Makinde on Electoral offences committed in breach of electoral laws “, was submitted to the Agodi office of the commission on Sunday.

According to the petition, Makinde was accused of releasing a video in the early hours of Sunday where the PDP candidate “pointedly proclaimed himself winner of the governorship election in Oyo state when INEC, the authorised umpire has not concluded same nor declared any such results.”

The petition signed by the APC state secretary, Mr. Mojeed Olaoya, said Makinde by the action is clearly inciting the citizenry against an eventual credible outcome of the elections.
