Furore over Peter Obi’s alleged cash gift to Rufai Oseni

Mixed reactions have trailed a recent report that the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, allegedly funded the funeral of the late father of Arise TV’s host, Rufai Oseni.

Reno Omokri, the Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, alleged Obi funded the funeral of Rufai’s father.

Omokri alleged this on his X account on August 25 with a picture of Obi and Rufai.

He asked the former Anambra Governor to come clean on whether or not he gave money to Oseni during the latter’s father’s funeral, a move Reno said has influenced the journalist into making political comments and analysis in favour of Obi.

He posted: “AriseTV and Mr Rufai Oseni should kindly answer the following question. Did Mr Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, fund the funeral of Mr Rufai Oseni’s father by giving him money in cash or via electronic means, either directly or through a third party, in August 2022,

    Peter Obi and Rufai Oseni

“…and has that influenced Mr. Oseni’s open bias in favour of Peter Obi, whereby Mr. Oseni used the AriseTV platform as a medium to campaign for and launder the image of Mr Peter Obi, and his undisguised personal animosity towards me for my refusal to support Mr Peter Obi’s Presidential ambition? I counsel them to think very carefully before they answer.”

Omokri, in one of the tweets, further called on Obi to publicly deny ever-inducing Oseni financially.

He added: “I asked a question that Mr. Peter Obi has NOT answered and has tried to use semantics to dodge.

“My question is this: Did Peter Obi fund the funeral of Mr Rufai Oseni’s father by giving him money in cash or via electronic means, either directly or through a third party, and has that influenced Mr. Oseni’s open bias in favour of Peter Obi, whereby Mr. Oseni used the AriseTV platform as a medium to campaign for and launder the image of Mr Peter Obi, and his undisguised personal animosity towards me for my refusal to support Mr Peter Obi’s Presidential ambition,” asked Omokri.

Reacting to Omokri’s questions, Obi refuted the claims that he financed the burial of Oseni’s father.

In his response via his X account, Obi said that he never sponsored such, adding that it is “a categorical lie.”

According to him: “There is a recent case where my name has been mentioned in a malicious and cheap blackmail against one of Nigeria’s best Television presenters, Mr. Rufai Oseni, who has stood sternly for what is right and has challenged me fearlessly on some occasions while speaking truth to power.

“I have recently been mentioned to have bribed Mr. Rufai Oseni by financially sponsoring the burial of his father.

“Let me clearly state that this is a categorical lie. It is not true, cannot be true and will never be true. Everyone who understands or follows my approach to things will attest to the fact that I do not give anyone money to promote my name.”

He added that he never enticed any journalist to speak or write in his favour.

“I have never and will never monetarily induce any journalist to speak or write in my favour. When I am invited to birthday celebrations or funerals, people know that I do attend.

“Countless journalists, media personnel, the less privileged, the wealthy etc., have all invited me to their occasions and they will attest to the fact that I honour such invitations, especially when people are grieving. I have never been to Rufai’s village. Even at the point of writing this, I do not know where he is from.

“One then wonders why people could decide to tarnish other people’s image for no justifiable reason. To those involved in such evil endeavours, I wish them well and pray that God will have mercy on them.”

  • Peter Obi and the verdict of history

Today, July 19, the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP, Peter Obi turns 58. Except to his business partners, when he became the governor of Anambra State, he was relatively unknown, but through his deeds, he sought to be worthy to be known.

When we talk of the remembrance of history, we are not concerned with the remembrance of man’s follies and crimes, but the encouraging remembrance of the acts of generative souls.

Obi will certainly be remembered for being the first governor to reclaim his mandate through the courts. Before him, Nigeria had elections as rigged as the last election. The common belief was that nobody ever recovered his mandate through the courts. With this mind-set, all those that went to court did so for formality sake without believing in its capacity to be used as an agent for the destruction of the old myrrh. Flowing from his nature, when he contested the gubernatorial election, he went to court. Even when everybody else, including his party abandoned him, he forged ahead. The moment the first judgement was delivered in his favour, they all ran back and as usual, through the press, started claiming the victory was as a result of their industry.  Peter Obi’s victory changed public perception about the delivery of justice in Nigeria. He will be remembered for this and nobody will take it away from him.

As governor, Obi set another record by his obstinacy in insisting that governance is a serious business. It was an irony of history that the House of Assembly led by Hon. Mike Balonwu, with the active connivance of those that were supposed to be Obi’s friends, got him illegally impeached. Undaunted, Obi persevered. Though discouraged from seeking his return, he was reinstated by the courts. He is always prompted by the character of his aims, helped by the fact that he knows what to fight and want to forget.  Thereafter, many people that suffered a similar fate followed his example. Certainly, history will remember him as the stubborn governor that fought against forces massed against him and was able to return from impeachment, thus strengthening the rule of law beyond measure. In this sense, Obi is a progressive force, establishing political stability, restoring the rule of law, disciplining characters, ending and mitigating political recklessness and re-assuring us on the beauties of democracy.

History records the follies of mankind; it also records the morality of the age and can tell us the worst leaders the world has encountered. Describing the morality of a particular leader, a historian conveyed it in a compact sentence: “He liked risqué stories and told them beyond compare”. History also transmitted the deeds of good leaders to us as well, including those that gave stimulating examples in morals and manners. History will certainly remind us that as the governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi shunned all manners of intrigues. He offered to Anambra people morals that were worthy of emulation. He “inherited” over 15 guest houses scattered around the state and closed all of them; only recognizing the comfort of the lodge, where his wife’s reign was supreme. In the eight years of his government, we did not hear of liaisons unbecoming of His Excellency.  This essentially has to do with his psychological make. His mind, either through nature or pressure of work has the defects of romantic imagination, but has the realistic stimulus of daily battling with ideas crying for implementation.

Against the practice of the time, which returned after he left office, Obi as the governor did not set out to deliberately deceive the people of the state. He only said and promised what he would do and followed the dictates of his independent spirit. The propensity of men that govern the state to lie and deceive was long captured by Nikita Khrushchev. Shall we sample him: “Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build bridges even when there are no rivers”. Without compunction, some promise the people what they want to hear and thereafter engage in all manner of subterfuges to sustain the deception. History will certainly remember Peter Obi as different: he did not tell lies and soon the people came to appreciate his openness. Planning was his forte. Before he uttered a word and what he would do or not, he would sit down and examine the finances of the state. He knew the capacity of the state at all times: what was possible and what was not possible because he was orderly. You could feel it even at long range that the unity and hierarchy of his desires or those of the populace imposed a clarifying and directive order upon his ideas, actions, policies and government.

Education! Every school boy was familiar with the decay of the education sector in Anambra State. You cannot build a nation if you do not build the people. Obi came into office not looking for what some people mouth as signature projects that often leads to misplacement of values. Some leaders, at the state and federal levels, had this in mind and ended up building bridges that led to nowhere or even monuments that one can at best describe as prompted by brave idiocy. Obi understands the place of education in the advancement of civilization. One of the tasks awaiting man is his ability to gather his heritage and transmit it to the future generation and this is part of the fruits of education. Obi met Anambra State that was bleeding, a state that always took 27th position among other states in external examinations. By the time he finished with his educational revolution, Anambra State was taking first position. Obi first funded education in his first and second year and did not see corresponding result. Thereafter, he was convinced that something was fundamentally wrong. This was how he returned schools to the church and thereafter committed over N10 billion to schools in the state, including those returned and managed by the church.

Is it not instructive that many years after he left Anambra State, his projects keep attracting awards to the state?  When Regina Pacis School at Onitsha conquered the world in Technovison Competition, the manager of the school easily traced that conquest to Peter Obi.

If we stretch his prudence to elastic limits, we shall accommodate the precedence he set in the history of Anambra State. For the first time, a governor left N75 billion to his successor; with the banks and details too clear to admit of any doubt. Though he recruited some people into the Civil Service, he left their two-year salaries in the vaults to avoid encumbering his successor. Some of the federal projects that delayed in starting because he wanted to get the permission of the federal government as required had the money for their completion set aside. What else shall history ask of a man?

Ndi Igbo have often been criticized for what some consider their noisy envy of one another, the bitterness of their political factions and disputes.  As the chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, Peter Obi made it clear that the era of “Igbo enwe Eze” (Igbos have no king) should be considered in the past and not in the future. He completely deferred to the leadership of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo on the understanding that we should not remain a nation of misanthropes. Under him, Igbo leaders met regularly to review the state of the nation and present a common front. He was fond of saying that nations must forge internal unity in order to fight external threats.

It is an incontestable fact that Obi also left his mark in the area of infrastructure. Under him, Anambra State had the best network of roads in the country. It is not the creation of the e-rats we talked about; the Federal Ministry of Works made that pronouncement and everybody that visited Anambra State under him testified to that.

Before Obi became governor, no health institution in the state was accredited by relevant authorities. Before he left office, he had 12 health institution accredited, including two hospitals: General Hospital, Onitsha and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Awka.  The case of the teaching hospital is particularly interesting. The state university offered medicine as a course without any teaching hospital; thus could not graduate her students. Obi set up a committee headed by Professor Frank Akpuaka and they came up with modalities for the establishment of the teaching hospital, which Obi delivered within time and it is as he left it. This is one of his greatest legacies that will not evade the scrutiny of history.

  • Obi to pupils: choose responsible role models

The Vice Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi, has advised pupils of El-Shalom Convent, New Heaven, Ogbaru to choose responsible people as their role models.

Obi, who visited the school yesterday, advised the pupils on the secret of success, saying they should take their education seriously and see it as a surety for their successes in the world.

He said: “Today’s world is defined by economic indices driven by the intellect; this is why emphasis is on knowledge and not baggage economy.”

The former governor, who recalled how former U.S President Bill Clinton said his encounter with Kennedy implanted in him the hunger to become president, advised the pupils to see the likes of Dr. Okonjo Iweala, Prof. Stella Chinyere Okunna, Chimamanda Adichie as role models. He also encouraged them to read about the lives of illustrious people like the late Prof. Dora Akunyili.

Highlight of the visit was a tour of the school facilities and presentation of a N1 million cheque to the school for continued infrastructural development.

School proprietor and Anglican Bishop of Ogbaru, Rev. Prosper Amah, said the school still uses the generator, computers and other facilities Obi donated as a governor. He thanked Obi for the visit and assured him of continued prayers.

  • ‘Obi is God’s unparalleled gift to humanity’

The Rector of St. John Innovation Institute of Management and Technology, Rev. Enyodiobi Francis, has described the Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi, as God’s “unparalleled gift to humanity”.

The cleric, who spoke yesterday at the unveiling and launching of the Institute at Neni yesterday, said his position is borne out of what Obi did for the institute when he was governor and what he continues to do for them.

He said: “The initial N30 million with which we started our academic block/auditorium was provided by him. He keeps visiting us and donating towards the completion of the project. “His support, as well as others, contributed to securing Federal Government approval for the institution.”

Obi lamented the notoriety with which what works in other parts of the country do not work in Nigeria. “Technical education is the future of the world. The white people started Yaba Institute of Technology and Bombay Institute of Technology in India; the Karachi Institute of Technology started at the same time with IMT, Enugu. While Nigeria’s own has not made any significant progress, those of others countries are part of their development narratives.”

  • 2023 presidency: Peter Obi attacks Amaechi

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vice presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has faulted Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi’s statement on the Southeast and the 2023 president.

Obi spoke with reporters yesterday in Port Harcourt after the lecture/book presentation  in honour of Rivers State Governor  Nyesom Wike.

Obi wondered why Amaechi, who is not from the Southeast, was writing off the region from the next presidential election.

Obi said: “Amaechi is not from the Southeast, so he cannot speak for us.

“He is not in any position to make such statements because even he that is in APC; he did not contribute anything to the success of that election.

“He did not even achieve anything in his own state.  Those of us from the Southeast who are from the PDP contributed to the success of our party.”

He added: “For example, PDP in my state got 95 per cent. They (APC) didn’t even get 25 per cent in Rivers State.  So he is not competent to speak on the Presidency in 2023.”

On the insecurity in the country,  Obi said the only way to achieve peace is for the Buhari Administration to unite the people and tackle insecurity headlong.

“Everybody has to be involved. The President has to work with the governors and the governors should work with the local government councils. We are Nigerians.  We have no other country, so everyone must be involved.”

  • Engage in genuine philanthropy to be happy, Peter Obi advises wealthy Nigerians dress

The Vice-Presidential candidate of the PDP in the last election, Mr. Peter Obi,  has advised Nigerians especially the wealthy ones to engage in genuine philanthropy and assistance  to the poor for them to enjoy genuine peace and happiness.

Obi said this yesterday when, as part of his Easter Programme, he visited the Aguata Anglican Diocesan Hospital at Umunze.

He  said : “spending for the right cause, rather than  wasting money on champagne and epicurean indulgence brings genuine peace and satisfaction to the soul. And there are many ways to do so, some of which are support for education, health, youth empowerment and  community development.

Obi who donated NI million  to the hospital to assist them in what he called “caring for the sick”, thanked the church for their continued efforts towards education, health care delivery, youth development and other areas they compliment the efforts of the government. Speaking during the event,  the Anglican Bishop of Aguata, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, represented by Ven. Dr. kamto Obi thanked Mr. Peter Obi for recognizing the position of the church and partnering with her in the service of the people.

He called on those in government who are genuinely interested in service to see the church as partners in progress.

It will be recalled that Mr. Peter Obi,  as part of his 2019 Easter celebration, decided to visit 50 hospitals across the country. He was accompanied yesterday by his former Commissioner for Information, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna.

  • Obi: youth development must be taken serious

Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Peter Obi has called on governments at all levels to take issues concerning the youth seriously.

He spoke yesterday at his home town, Agulu, during an interactive session with stakeholders and community youths.

According to Obi, beyond the call to take care of the youth, wealthy individuals, at even town level, should show concern about the progress of the youth in their various towns.

Obi, who has been consistent with empowering youth and women of his town, said he was prepared to strengthen the scheme, especially now he had observed that most youths were just in the villages drinking, smoking and wasting their lives. “If the government and wealthy people do not show interest in the progress of the society, it will breed anarchy in future,” he noted.

  • Why I spent my Easter with patients, by Obi

Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Peter Obi has explained that he spent his Easter in hospitals across Anambra State following an inspiration he received in December.

Obi spoke yesterday at the Anglican Diocesan Hospital in Umueje. He visited with the Anglican Bishop of Niger West, Rev. Johnson Ekwe, Prof. Stella Okunna and Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike.

The former governor said: “In season and out of season, I visited schools all over the country, offering my modest support. During Christmas, I visited motherless babies’ homes and prisons, but upon reflection, as if by inexplicable inspiration, my mind kept urging me to visit the sick as another group that needed to be shown special love and concern.

“This was how I resolved to visit hospitals in the state. Apart from few in the towns that enjoy special relationship with me, my resolution is to visit hospitals in the remotest parts of the state.”

It was gathered that Obi, whose intention is to visit about 50 designated hospitals in the remotest parts of the state as part of his Easter celebration, has already visited 12 hospitals including – Diocesan Hospital of the Anglican Diocese of Amichi; St. Charles Borromeo Hospital of the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha; Iyi-Enu Hospital of the Anglican Diocese on the Niger; Anglican Diocesan Hospital at Otuocha and Omor.

He also visited the Umueje Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital, Orsumoghu of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, among others.

Obi, who donated over N1 million to each of the hospitals visited, encouraged other wealthy Nigerians to shun spending on frivolities for those things that would enrich humanity.

  • Easter: Obi calls for prayers, says Nigeria is stressed

The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the February 23 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to use the period of Easter to reflect on the situation in the country and pray for the survival of our democracy.

In an Easter message released by his media office, Obi said the nation’s democracy, more than ever before, is under heavy stress that needed all hands to be on deck for its survival.

He said that the nation’s economy is under pressure and required the commitment, and sincerity of purpose from critical stakeholders to survive.

The former Anambra State governor charged the nation’s leaders to stand up for the truth and and justice to save the country from deteriorating, pointing out that no nation develops in an unjust environment.

“This country has been undergoing a prolonged period of misfortune that this period of Easter provides huge opportunity for Christians to return to God in supplications for lasting solutions to our myriads of challenges”.

He noted that at this critical stage in the nation’s journey to development, it’s only standing on the side of truth on the state of the nation can free it from the economic bondage.

“Indicators are apparent that the country is under siege and Nigerians should use this solemn period of Easter to pray for God to intervene and raise good leaders for the country”, he added.

Obi charged Christians to see the Easter festivity, which also marks the end of the 40 days special fasting and prayers, as an ample period for positive attitude to one another.

He admonished Nigerian leaders to absorb the lessons of Easter and allow it influence their conduct, especially as it concerns the less privileged in the society.

Obi wished the Christian community and Nigerians in general happy Easter celebrations as he urged them to live in peace with one another.

  • Rivers: Let the will of the people prevail – Obi

Mr Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the will of people prevail as it resumes collation of results in Rivers.

Obi, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the PDP in the last Presidential Election gave the advice in a statement issued by his Media Office on Monday in Abuja.

INEC has fixed between April 2 and April 5 for the collation of results for March 9 Rivers’ Governorship Election, which was earlier suspended due to disruption and violence.

Obi said that the needless stretch of Rivers people could only be compensated if peoples will was allowed to prevail in all elective positions in the state.

He advised INEC to see the collation of results in the state as a huge opportunity to project its image.

Obi said that the people of Rivers should not have been subjected to the agony of waiting for more than 20 days before hearing their results, if not for those who were desperate for power.

He said that Rivers state was so critical to the economic and political development of the country that a serious government should not contribute to its destabilization.

The former Anambra Governor said that the militarization of the election in Rivers and other South South states remained the sour side of 2019 general elections.

Obi said that aside the fact that Rivers state was a traditional PDP state, the performance of its gubernatorial flag bearer, Nyesom Wike in the last four years made imperative that no party would be able to compete effectively in the state.

He commended the resilience of the Rivers people and urged them to remain resolute until their will prevailed.
