    Obi replies Soludo, Babangida Aliyu

Former Anambra State Governor Governor Peter Obi yesterday reiterated his resolve to serve a four-year single term, if elected as president in 2027.

He maintained his determination to re-contest in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, describing the pledge as “sacrosanct” and rooted in his commitment to purposeful and accountable leadership.

Obi stated: “I will serve only one term of four years if elected President. And that vow is sacrosanct.”

It was a vieled reaction to the remarks by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, who doubted that Obi would keep to his works.

Soludo, who spoke in Awka, the state capital, at the weekend,  said any presidential aspirant who promised to spend one term could not be trusted, adding that he should be referred to a psychiatric.

He said: “Some of them want to lie to us, how can anyone with a brain – you think you are talking to fools – you come to people and say ‘I will do only one term’.

“Any politician who says that must be sent to a psychiatric home because the person must have some mental problem.

“When the constitution allows you to stay up to eight years, you come and tell us where it has ever happened. Anybody who says he needs only one term needs psychiatric evaluation because you are taking everybody to be a fool.”

Speaking on television last week, Aliyu, who acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s feats, said a single term of four years is not feasible.

Reflecting on the push for a one-term president for the North by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or South by Obi of the Labour Party (LP), Aliyu said it is illogical, adding that nobody can predict the future.

He stressed: “ I have heard many of the presidential aspirants already saying they will serve one term. Now, if a northerner says he’s serving one term, what problem is he creating for the North? If a southerner said, I’m only going to serve one term, what guarantee do you have?”

Other observers contented that Obi may renege on his promise, recalling that when he vowed not to defect from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2010, he ate his words and defected to the PDP where he became running mate to Atiku in 2019.

But citing examples of globally respected leaders who served brief, yet impactful terms, Obi promised to follow the examples of former United States Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, as well as former South African President Nelson Mandela.

He stressed: “One of the greatest American presidents, Abraham Lincoln, served only four years, yet his legacy endures… Mandela chose to serve only one term… His decision was a deliberate act of leadership.”

Acknowledging widespread distrust in the country, Obi said many Nigerians no longer take politicians for their words.

He stated: “But even in this climate of cynicism, there are still a few whose actions have matched their words — whose integrity is built on verifiable facts.”

Obi tackled the skepticism over his one-term vow, saying: “Recently, I became aware of two statements aimed, albeit indirectly, at my vow to serve only a single four-year term.

“One person remarked that even if I were sworn in by a shrine, I still wouldn’t be believed. Another suggested that anyone talking about doing only one term should undergo psychiatric evaluation.”

Obi defended his record as a former governor, saying: “I fulfilled each of those promises without deviation. My word is my bond.”

He also outlined his top priorities, including improving governance, tackling insecurity, prioritizing education and healthcare, fighting corruption, and transforming Nigeria’s economy from consumption-based to production-driven.

Obi added: “Forty-eight months is enough for any leader who is focused and prepared to make a meaningful difference.”

Obi’s one-term pledge deceitful, Presidency warns

The renewed one-term pledge made by former Anambra State Governor Mr. Peter Obi is deceitful, the Presidency warned yesterday.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, said the presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 election has a history of broken promises and political inconsistency.

Reacting to Obi’s vow -restated in a social media post on Sunday – that he would serve only one term if elected president, Onanuga questioned his credibility and fitness to lead a complex nation like Nigeria.

In a post shared via his verified X handle, @aonanuga1956, on Sunday evening, Onanuga wrote: “Peter Obi, the liar, is exposed again.”

“You’re neither a Mandela nor a Lincoln or a Kennedy. You sound as if you have never held an elected office before. You sought re-election as Anambra Governor in 2010 and narrowly won courtesy of a divided opposition. Why didn’t you walk away after only one term in office?,” he said, referencing Obi’s political record.

He further criticized Obi’s performance as governor, asking: “After serving two terms, did Anambra look like a state that has been transformed? If you couldn’t transform a small Anambra after eight years, is there a guarantee that you’ll do anything significant under 4 years as President of a complex and complicated Nigeria?”

Onanuga also recalled Obi’s earlier vow not to defect from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the party on whose platform he was twice elected governor, before ultimately decamping.

He argued that this past contradiction casts doubt on Obi’s credibility.

“You talk about keeping your promises or your vow being your bond, but you and I know that’s not true. You have broken previous promises and usually lie with reckless abandon,” Onanuga stated.

He added:  “If we’re to make allowance for excuses, you’ll definitely have an excuse to break your one-term vow. You talk about trust, but how do you expect people to trust someone who can’t keep a simple promise not to leave a political party?”

    2027: Obi-Natasha ticket

James Hadley Chase’s fictive creature, Poke Toholo, in “Want to Stay Alive?”, declared he had discovered the magic to prise open locked pockets — the bullet!

For 2027 election hustlers, perhaps there’s a joint magic “bullet” to harvest the vote: China stats from Peter Obi and crocodile tears from Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan!

How good and nice and marvellous would it be, were the originators of both magic to graft under one sole indivisible ticket?

“Sure banker!” — or was that not how traditional pools betters called it, before the arch-democratization of betting, lottery and sundry affairs?

“Sure banker”!  Indeed, if the two pooled their humongous talents (in stats and tears), the presidential election would be a no contest — a sure banker!  And their billions of social media zombies would joy!

How?  Since Obi burst on the national consciousness on Pastor Poju Oyemade’s Covenant Nation yearly symposium, he perhaps has grown the most profitable(?) chatterbox career in Nigerian history — forget his peculiar voice!

The more he talks, the more his excitable rabble hail him, the more he’s condemned to talking more to stay relevant!  Since 2023 when he over-performed at the 2023 presidential election, it’s one day, one jive for Obi.

The famous author and finisher of “go and verify!” has broadened the range of his China stats (euphemism for outright lies with numbers), away from China, to Egypt, to Argentina, to Indonesia — go and verify!

Read Also: Five lucrative ways Nigerians can make money on TikTok

Trouble is: among the sober and introspective, Obi sounds progressively shallower.  Also, he has blown the mystique over his Anambra governorship — mediocre, at best — with its strange “savings”.  Poor Obi is snared in own trap!

Natasha!  The Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, dismissed her post-appeal antics as “skits” and “content creation”.  That might sound harshly dismissive but it’s clinically correct — not only of her post-court posturing alone,  but of the social media theatrics she’d hugged, since her suspension from the Senate.

Pray, how could any trained lawyer reject a verdict — with her legitimate appeal — and yet want to part-enjoy what she already rejected?  No be juju be dat? — as they’ll say in the ever-colourful pidgin high street.

Natasha’s attempt to “resume” at the Senate, after her self-proclaimed “expiry” of her suspension, was laughable but unfortunate.  No less pathetic was her attempt to frame her drawing of blanks as Natasha vs Akpabio, male vs female, over dog vs underdog nonsense.  That’s deliberate manipulation only the truly naive would fall into.

But maybe the Senate was right.  Maybe she was just creating skits and social media content to milk sympathy.  But maybe too, that’s not entirely useless: millions of zombies abound on the social media.

Which is why an Obi-Natasha ticket would a sure-banker — gender balance inclusive!

  • Wike backs Edo governor over Peter Obi visit protocol

Wike backs Edo governor over Peter Obi visit protocol

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has defended Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, over his directive that Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, must inform the state government before any visit to Edo.

Speaking on Monday during the commissioning of the revitalised Edo Line mass transit system in Benin City, Wike said Okpebholo’s insistence on protocol and security was both appropriate and necessary given the current political climate.

“When I was governor and Obi was campaigning, he would notify me before coming to Rivers State,” Wike stated. “That’s the proper way to do things. If anything happens to him while he’s in the state unannounced, the governor will be held responsible.”

Wike stressed that no responsible governor would overlook the security implications of unscheduled visits by high-profile politicians, especially in sensitive times.

“Some people just like to play politics with everything. What Governor Okpebholo said was correct. He never said Obi shouldn’t come. He only said, ‘Let me know when you’re coming so I can protect you.’ And that is the truth,” Wike said.

Taking a swipe at what he described as “populist politics of pretence,” Wike said the real danger is when political actors manipulate public opinion with theatrics rather than address governance with responsibility.

“This is not a time for carrying food trays or pretending to fly commercial aircraft just to deceive people. Nigerians must start to recognise what real leadership looks like,” he said.

Wike further urged the Edo governor to remain firm in his decisions and ignore those trying to undermine his authority.

“In leadership, people will attack you for doing the right thing. Don’t let that bother you. If no one is talking about you, then you’re not leading. But once you have your people behind you, stand your ground,” Wike charged.

He also warned that in the heat of political seasons, even the most innocent acts could be twisted for propaganda.

“These so-called coalition members, if anything happens, they’ll accuse the governor of plotting it. So, your directive to be informed is both wise and lawful. Anyone who doesn’t understand that is playing politics,” he said.

The FCT Minister described Governor Okpebholo as a quiet achiever whose work in the last eight months had begun to restore Edo’s credibility. According to him, performance, not political noise, was the true test of leadership.

“I identify with people who mean well for their people. The governor is focused. He’s not talking too much, but he’s working. He’s not the type to be distracted by noise,” Wike said.

The event also served as a subtle political reckoning, with Wike publicly expressing regret for backing the previous administration in Edo State.

“In 2020, I led the campaign that gave Edo bad governance. I apologise. But I won’t make that mistake again. What I see now is a governor who’s serious about delivering for his people,” he said.

As the Edo Line buses were commissioned amid fanfare, Wike reiterated his support for the Okpebholo administration, urging the people of Edo to rally behind their governor and ignore detractors.

“You’re doing the right thing. Keep going. Don’t let anyone distract you. Protect your people, protect your mandate, and protect your legacy,” he concluded.

    • NAPS queries ex-Anambra governor’s sincerity

Nigerian students, under the aegis of the National Association of Polytechnics Students (NAPS), have barred the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, from their campuses nationwide.

The students said their decision was informed by Obi’s failure to retract his alleged misrepresentation of what happened during a recent student union election at  Auchi Polytechnics in Edo State.

NAPS’ President Eshiofune Paul Oghayan told reporters yesterday in Abuja that Obi’s failure to retract his alleged misleading claim had created doubt about his integrity as a leader.

Oghayan said: “Even more concerning is the pattern emerging from his actions. Mr. Obi, without due verification, recently misled the public with false information regarding the student union government (SUG) elections in Auchi Polytechnics.

“In a widely circulated statement, he claimed: ‘I watched a heartbreaking video that showed students in Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State running for their lives as they were being shot at during their student election yesterday, which left two students dead and several injured.’

Oghayan noted that Obi’s statement was not only false but also reckless.

The NAPS president added: “We, as the direct custodians of student welfare, held a press conference and called on Mr. Obi to retract the statement and issue a public apology, especially to the student community of Auchi Polytechnic.

“Yet, he remained silent. The same man who built his campaign around ‘go and verify’ failed to verify before peddling unsubstantiated claims. That is not leadership; it is manipulation.”

The students said their decision was informed by Obi’s failure to retract his alleged misrepresentation of what occurred during a recent student union election in Auchi Polytechnics in Edo State.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday, NAPS’ president, Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan, said Obi’s failure to retract his alleged misleading claim creates doubt about his integrity as a leader.

Oghayan said, “Even more concerning is the pattern emerging from his actions.

Oghayan noted that the said  statement by Obi was not only false, but it was also reckless, adding that Obi went further to draw comparisons between the actions of students and those of political leaders, implying that student unrest was a result of ‘leaders, who have chosen to fight, snatch, grab and run with it.’

The students’ leader said, “We, as the direct custodians of student welfare, held a press conference and called on Mr. Obi to retract the statement and issue a public apology, especially to the student community of Auchi Polytechnic.

“Yet, he remained silent. The same man who built his campaign around ‘go and verify’ failed to verify before peddling unsubstantiated claims. That is not leadership; it is manipulation.

“Having failed to retract his false statement and refusing to issue a public apology to the student community in Auchi Polytechnic and the nation at large, we are left with no choice.

“By the moral authority and Constitutional responsibility vested in the office of the President of NAPS, I, Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan, hereby declare Mr. Peter Obi as persona non grata on all campuses of our institutions across the country, with a mandated distance of not less than 10 kilometres from any student community.

“This is not vengeance. It is a call for accountability. Leadership cannot preach what it refuses to practice. Influence must not become an avenue for institutional interference,” Oghayan.

He faulted Obi’s claim that Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo, barred him from the state, arguing that the governor’s directive was only intended for security coordination, which is a standard practice.

Oghayan said, “Governor Okpebholo may have spoken with bluntness, but his concern was rooted in security intelligence and recent events.

“If any high-profile visit carries a track record of civil unrest and casualties, then a call for security coordination is not just justified – it is essential.

“Indeed, reports confirmed that three lives were tragically lost shortly after Mr Obi’s last visit to the state. In light of such unrest, what responsible governor would fold his arms and play passive?

“It is commendable that Mr. Obi made a N15million donation to St. Philomena’s Catholic Hospital. Generosity towards health and humanitarian causes is noble and worthy of note.

“This is the same Mr. Obi, who famously declared during his campaign that ‘he doesn’t give shishi,’ a slogan that became both a mantra and identity of his political movement.

“But today, we see him making high-profile donations in public glare. Is this growth or contradiction?

“Furthermore, when public donations are made to churches, hospitals, or other faith-based institutions, they must be approached with strategic discretion and in consultation with relevant security authorities.

“Otherwise, such noble institutions may become unintended targets of violence – as evidenced by the chaos that followed his recent visit,” Oghayan said.

  • Peter Obi’s RBK moment

    Peter Obi’s RBK moment

Recently, Pitobi went on BBC to recreate the RBK Okafor moment. RBK Okafor had tried to exploit the death of Nnamdi Azikiwe, and went on television with an effusive jeremiad telling the world that the Great Zik had handed over his platform and work to him. He was teary and almost convincing. Alas, Zik was not dead, and no such dialogue happened with the Owelle of Onitsha.

Well, Pitobi says he had a dialogue with Buhari and the Daura chieftain asked him to care for the poor. I wonder why he waited, like RBK, until his passing to make such a proclamation. He might not have visited Buhari alone.

They mocked him as liar and they don’t want him near their neighbourhoods, etc. There is a way to respect the dead. Exploiting Buhari’s passing is not one of them.

LP Senate caucus urges Okpebholo to withdraw ‘threats’ against Obi, apologise

The Senate caucus of the Labour Party (LP) on Saturday, called on Edo Governor Monday Okpebolo to withdraw what it described as his recent threats against the 2023 presidential candidate of the party.

They also asked him to apologise to Nigerians for allegedly violating the constitution which he swore to uphold on assumption of office.

The demand by the caucus was contained in a statement by the remaining four LP Senators in the 10th Senate, including Senator Victor Umeh, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Ezea Okey and Senator Tony Nwoye, in Abuja.

The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Labour Party Senate Caucus has been drawn to the disturbing and shocking statement of threat made by the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo openly threatening the life of Mr Peter Obi that his security will not be guaranteed if Peter Obi ever visited Edo State again without obtaining permission from the the Governor, Monday Okpebholo.

“Mr Peter Obi’s only “sin” was his recent visit to Edo State and donating N15 million to a nursing school in Edo State.

“We wish to remind the Executive Governor of Edo State that section 41(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, provides for Freedom of Movement and expression for all Nigerian citizens.

“Mr Peter Obi is a citizen of Nigeria and his movement is guaranteed and should not be curtailed by sheer Executive lawlessness and impudence.

“As a champion of democracy, nation-building and sustainable development, Mr Peter Obi deserves protection and support from the law and all who share the vision for a better Nigeria.

“We humbly urge the Executive Governor of Edo State to quickly withdraw this his unguarded statement threatening Mr Peter Obi’s life, freedom of movement and personal security and tender an unreserved apology to all Nigerians for violating the Nigerian Constitution which he swore to uphold.

Police halt proposed Obi’s birthday rally in Kaduna

The Kaduna Police Command has warned against a planned political rally by supporters of former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to mark his birthday, citing security concerns and a ban on unauthorised political gatherings.

In a security advisory, the Command said it received credible intelligence indicating that criminal elements were planning to infiltrate the rally to incite violence and disrupt public peace.

The statement, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, noted that political rallies and gatherings remain suspended across the state until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially lifts the embargo on campaigns.

“The Command wishes to bring to the attention of the general public that it has received credible intelligence regarding a planned political rally by supporters of Mr. Peter Obi,” the statement reads in part.

It added that the timing of the rally also clashed with party primaries scheduled for the same day by political parties participating in an upcoming bye-election in the state—events which have been formally communicated to the Police in accordance with the law.

According to the Command, the Obi birthday rally was expected to overlap with areas already designated for the primaries, increasing the risk of clashes, tension, and disruption of the electoral process.

In view of this, the Command strongly advised organisers to shelve any planned gathering or procession in honour of the former presidential candidate, stressing that public safety must not be compromised.

“If they wish to hold any form of event in honour of their principal, it is advised that such activities be suspended to ensure public safety and prevent potential hijack by miscreants,” the statement advised.

The Police warned that any group or individual found violating the advisory would face legal consequences, even as it reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
