I cannot guarantee Peter Obi’s security in Edo, says Okpebholo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has cautioned a former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, against visiting the state without informing him.

Governor Okpebholo said Obi’s security in Edo State was not guaranteed.

He said the former Labour Party presidential candidate should take whatever happened to him anytime he (Obi) visits Edo without informing him.

The Edo Governor spoke in Uromi, headquarters of Esan North East Local Government, while receiving Hon Marcus Onobun, the lawmaker representing Esan West/Igueben/Central in the House of Representatives, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said he was serious about what he said.

According to him, “The man we say he no get shi shi I am sending a direct message to him. He cannot come to Edo without telling me. A new Sheriff is in town.

“His security cannot be guaranteed. We are serious about it. Whatever that happens to him when he comes to Edo State, he will take it. He came the other day and donated N15m. By the time he left after donating the money, there was crisis and three people died in Benin. Tell Obi he should not to come to Edo without telling me.”

On his part, Onobun, who had earlier claimed he was being harrased to join the APC, said he was back home to the APC.

Obi, had last week, visited the St Philomena hospital in Benin City and donated the sum of N15m.

Cult related killings began in different parts of the state last week Friday leading to the killing of over 12 persons.

Stop threatening the coalition, group warns Peter Obi

A socio-political group, the South-South Emerging Leaders’ Forum (SELF), has cautioned former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against making divisive remarks or threatening the newly formed opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Benjamin Kolowei, the group accused Obi of lacking genuine commitment to the coalition, alleging that he is already plotting to abandon it, similar to his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries.

SELF further warned Obi against allegedly blackmailing the coalition to zone the presidential ticket to the South, stating that such actions could trigger agitation from the North to complete the 18 years it claims the South has held the presidency.

The statement reads, “We note that Mr. Peter Obi and his obedient movement, in recent times, have resorted to threatening and blackmailing the leadership of the Coalition. We dare to tell the former Anambra Governor that such a strategy will not work; it has failed woefully.

“Records have shown that Mr. Obi has a history of running away from primary elections, which is a major aspect of democratic culture. If Mr. Obi claims to be a democrat, why is he always avoiding the primary election? Why is he looking for a free presidential ticket? He did that as a governor, and as recently as 2023, Mr. Obi abandoned PDP when it was time for the primary election.

“As a forum of professionals and emerging leaders, we will not fold our hands and tolerate Peter Obi to frustrate the ongoing arrangements to rescue our Nation and have a credible alternative to the APC.

“We hereby call on Mr. Peter Obi to stop his pretentious lifestyle as if he is a saint or the only Messiah Nigeria is waiting for. If Mr. Obi wants to participate in a democratic contest, he should respect the rules of the game. Though he has never fought or contributed to the development of the democratic process in Nigeria, he does not know what it takes.

“Obi and his Obidients should learn early that democracy is about contest, not about free lunch or free tickets. It is not about blackmail.

“If Obi is looking for where he will be given a free presidential ticket, the door is open. Although we have gathered reliably that Mr. Obi has secured another platform where he will soon unveil to contest in 2027, it is high time the leaders of the ADC Coalition do not sleep with their two eyes closed. We are making it public that Peter Obi is not ready to cooperate and work with Coalition leaders.”

The group called on the David Mark-led ADC leadership not to bow to any pressure to zone the ticket of the party to any zone, adding that Nigerians should be allowed to decide what they want.

“We are appealing that the ADC National leadership should ensure a credible and transparent primary election that will produce an acceptable candidate. Whoever wins the primary should be supported by all. If it is Peter Obi, if he remains in the coalition, he should not be denied the massive support,” the statement said.

Why I didn’t attend late Buhari’s burial – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi has explained his absence at the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He cited flight restrictions as the reason for his inability to attend the ceremony in Daura on Tuesday.

Obi said efforts to attend the burial were hampered by a combination of unavailable flights and restricted air traffic to accommodate high-level dignitaries.

He said, “Yes, it was difficult to come here yesterday because there were no flights.

“Even if you had a flight, you couldn’t land at Katsina Airport. It was all closed because of the number of dignitaries attending the burial.”

“It is believed that the mourning continues today and tomorrow. Whoever comes today or tomorrow is still part of the mourning.”

Obi recalled his past interactions with Buhari, particularly a meeting during his presidential campaign in which the late leader urged him to focus on the welfare of Nigeria’s poor.

“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning, and I remember his words to this day: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians’. That’s what I always remember,” he said.

“And I believe he did his best within his capacity. I remember vividly his sincere appeal for fighting and caring for the poor.”

Reflecting on Buhari’s passing, Obi said the former president’s death serves as a solemn reminder of the transient nature of power and life itself.

CSO faults Obi’s Auchi Poly SUG election death claim, demands apology

The Centre for Peace, Transparency and Accountability (CPTA) has called on former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, to retract a statement he made regarding the Student Union Government (SUG) election at the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State.

The organisation has also warned that legal action may be taken if he fails to issue a public apology within seven working days.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, CPTA’s Executive Director, comrade Patrick Ogheneyero Jr., addressed a post made by Mr. Obi on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

In the post, Mr. Obi alleged that two students died and several others were injured during the July 5 SUG election at the institution.

Ogheneyero described the claim as inaccurate and concerning, particularly given Mr. Obi’s influence as a public figure.

“We believe the statement to be false and unverified. It has the potential to cause panic, misinform the public, and unfairly damage the reputation of the institution,” he said.

The group cited an official report from the institution’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Angela Egele, which confirmed that no fatalities or serious injuries occurred during the election.

While the vote was declared inconclusive due to procedural issues, the event was said to have been conducted peacefully under the supervision of security personnel and independent observers.

The group expressed disappointment that the claim was made without consultation with the institution or verification from credible sources.

“We urge all public figures, especially those of national standing, to engage with facts and exercise responsibility in their public statements,” he added.

In addition to its demand for a retraction and apology, the group used the occasion to highlight developments at the Polytechnic under the leadership of Dr. Salisu Shehu Umar, who assumed office as Rector in February 2022.

The group listed several achievements during his tenure, including “Construction of an asphalt road network within the campus, Development of new office blocks and classrooms, Completion of a 250-seat lecture theatre for the School of Engineering, Renovation and modernisation of the central library and ICT centre.”

“Dr. Umar has shown commitment to institutional growth and student welfare. These achievements speak to a vision of progress,” he said.

The group reaffirmed its support for the Polytechnic’s current administration and called on political and public actors to avoid statements that could undermine trust in public institutions.

  • Why we chose Moghalu as Anambra guber candidate, by Obi, Otti, others

Why we chose Moghalu as Anambra guber candidate, by Obi, Otti, others

Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, on Friday, officially presented Dr. George Moghalu as governorship candidate for the November 8 election to the people of Anambra State.

Obi urged the people to vote for Moghalu, assuring them that he was prepared to provide good governance to the state with empathy and compassion.

Speaking in Onitsha during the party’s flag-off campaign rally, Obi also clarified reports alleging that he had dumped LP for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that the coalition remained only in the 2027 general elections.

He said, “Let me state categorically, I and all the members, both at the state and national levels, are part of the coalition that has adopted ADC for the 2027 election.

“But today, we’re LP members. That’s why we’re here for this symbolic flag off the campaign for LP flagbearer, Dr. George Moghalu.

“We urge you to go to your constituencies and convince people. You live in Anambra, so I don’t need to tell you what’s happening here. You can access yourself.

“Governance for me is about compassion and empathy, caring for the lowly, petty traders. It’s not these same poor masses you collect taxes from.

“I’ve governed Anambra State, and I don’t boast of things I didn’t do. I ensured quality education and healthcare. They’re all verifiable.

“You might have heard that the only thing I did was build a brewery. But the same brewery not only gave employment to thousands of people but was also the highest taxpayer and the IGR industry.

“You can compare that with the fun city you have today, and which one is more profitable?”

Describing the Deputy Governorship candidate, Ifeoma Okaro, as organised, Obi said, “We chose a female deputy governor because we want to care for families. She’s not only popular, but organised.

“Let me remind you that I’m running for President in 2027 and I’m serious about it. Everyone has the right to contest, but none of them is better than me. I have the backing of the senators, representatives and others.”

Abia State governor, Dr Alex Otti described Moghalu as a principled politician, pledging full support for him.

Otti, who was represented at the rally, said, “The Anambra guber candidate is a son of Aba, grew up in Aba and started politics in Aba. We’ll campaign for him in Abia State.

“Obi remains the number one performing governor of Anambra State. What he did during his tenure will be replicated and doubled by Moghalu.”

Also speaking, Senators representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh and his Anambra North counterpart, Tony Nwonye promised to support Moghalu to ensure victory at the poll.

They, however,  urged him to shun a campaign of calumny but focus on an issue-based campaign throughout the electioneering period.

On his part, party flagbearer, Moghalu pledged to serve with the fear of God, assuring he would not disappoint the trust reposed in him.

“If we begin to enumerate all we’re going to do, we’ll sleep here. But my pledge to you today is that my deputy and I will serve with the fear of God.

“All will be happy, children will go to school, roads will be built, and agriculture will blossom. We won’t disappoint or put you to shame.

“People will pay tax, but not with a pestle. We won’t collect taxes with pestles. All in our manifesto will be implemented to the letter. None will be left out.

“Remember, the battle before us is not the type fought carrying snuff in hands. We must go back to our various wards and polling units to convince the people that Anambra will be better under LP,” he restated.

  • Peter Obi: The archetypical Nigerian opposition politician

Peter Obi: The archetypical Nigerian opposition politician

While we appreciate the enthusiasm with which Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has delivered his acceptance speech as Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), we must urgently and firmly reject the premise and process behind this appointment — an appointment that lacks due process, transparency, and the broad-based legitimacy expected in a democratic political party”.

“Ironically, the speech talks about internal democracy, ideological discipline, and inclusiveness—yet the very process by which he emerged contradicts every word he  spoke. Democracy cannot begin with imposition. The ADC must not become another replica of the broken parties we seek to replace -Dr. Musa Isa Matara IQAM

    National Publicity Secretary, ADC (Original).

    Here they come again.

A leopard cannot change its skin.

“I promise I will not leave APGA.

Not only that I will not leave, I will die in APGA” — the ever unreliable Peter Obi in 2010.

I now ask: can a group of mostly political Almajiris, described

humorously, as internally displaced persons fighting for relevance by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, come from nowhere, and whimsically grab a fully functioning, INEC – certified political party?

Are there no longer laws in Nigeria, or is it an affirmation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s  allegation concerning their leaders’ belief that “trust in money can buy him his way on any, or all issues”?

Last week on this column I presented, not only what political opposition currently looks like in our country, I equally sketched what a serious and responsible opposition should aspire to be; at least not a demonstration of desperation and lawlessness  as we saw displayed in the manner some oligarchs sought to capture ADC.

No, not in a country of laws even if they individually equate to a Central Bank.

Today I venture a little further into what a responsible opposition politician, not the group, should aspire to be – not look like. Whichever of those currently parading as opposition leaders but whose past does not reflect Nigerians’ wishes should simply be given a wide berth.

Mr Peter Obi, who as Presidential candidate of the Labour party in the 2023 election cycle, placed a distant third, in spite of his unrestrained weaponisation of both ethnicity and religion in his campaign, will be our specimen of what an opposition leader, and ipso facto, a probable future Nigerian President, should not be.

In the same manner they believe they had captured ADC – no process, no rules – Peter Obi has declared, apriori, that he will contest the 2027 Presidential election, come rain, come shine.

This is in spite of the loud presence in the same opposition of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the sedentary politician, and perennial  Presidential candidate, who is dumping PDP for no other reason than that he cannot wangle his way to becoming its candidate again as there aren’t enough Hausa/Fulani contestants in the ADC, this time around, to bulldoze as they did Aminu Tambuwal in the PDP in ’23.

Nor is Obi unaware of the efette presence of Rotimi Amaechi, the ‘Mr am hungry’, and a fellow Southerner who considers himself the President- in- waiting.

That exactly is how self – conceited these opposition politicians are which makes it doubly obvious that a collision of their altars is as sure as day follows the night.

It’s only a question of time.

Festus Keyamo, the Aviation Minister, however, put this in better perspective when he implied that in swearing to contest, Obi was telling Atiku that he understands his( Atiku’s) game plan.

Wrote Keyamo:”This is just Atiku’s faction of PDP in desperate search for the 2027 Presidential ticket – nothing more, nothing less.

The person who the old, cunning guards want to take for a ride in all of this is Peter Obi. They want his votes, but don’t want to give him their Presidential ticket because this is Atiku’s show, simpliciter.

That is why David Mark is the interim Chairman”.

Apparently the crafty old man had this all worked out in his mind when he recently went to Osun state, publicly disdained the state governor, of his then own PDP,  but enthusiastically romanced Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who he must have promised the Secretaryship of whichever party they were hopping into, in the belief that with Aregbesola and the wily David Mark holding the two key positions, his Presidential candidacy was as good as made.

In making Obi our sample we are also guided by the following words of his: “My past speaks loudly for me”.

    Indeed!

But how will Obi, by bringing his past into the equation, not know that he has technically self disqualified?

Or has he forgotten his promise, among many others, never to leave APGA which he not only subsequently ditched to become a political  vagrant, hopping from APGA to PDP, then to Labour and now to God knows what party since ADC stakeholders have promised to fight them to the hilt.

Many statements by Peter Obi have sparked controversy.

He has, in fact, been severally accused of lying, insisting that his claims are, most times, unfounded and lack evidence. He often makes claims that are not supported by facts. He also exaggerates or distorts facts to suit his narrative. He obfuscates, making claims without providing evidence to back them up.

For instance, he is in the habit of claiming that a particular policy or action has had a certain impact without providing data or statistics to support his assertion, even while he loves to dish out fake statistics.

His claim of making Anambra state number one in Education in Nigeria, for instance, has been amply discredited.

As is his wont, Peter Obi is already out whining his Obidients as well as those who will file behind him for ethnic and religious reasons.

He has not only sworn  he wouldd contest the 2027 presidential election, he pledged to serve only one term if elected and promised to restore national stability within two years.

Here you see Obi’s crass ambition and selfishness in bold relief – an Igbo Presidential candidate promising to serve for only one term even when his people have, like forever, craves for that number one position in the country.

I expect Igbos to see through this coy man.

And if we may ask, what exactly does he mean by restoring national stability, which he hopes to do in two years?

Pray, where is this miracle worker whose miniscule political party, the Labour party, has been roiling in crises for as long as Nigerians can remember?

In his address to his supporters during a live X Space interaction he also dismissed reports suggesting a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He had to say that because he knows that the former Vice President is already a dead weight and failed politician. But believe Obi on  any of these things and you would believe anything.

Recall his campaign promise to remove fuel subsidy on Day One, as President, and how he began to rant, whine and obfuscate after seeing the inescapable challenges consequent on Prident Tinubu’s removal of subsidy. Meanwhile had Tinubu not done so the way he did, these ethnicity – suffused people would have ensured they deployed Ajaero, and his NLC, to make it a mission impossible, not minding the draw back that would have meant for Nigeria.

Before concluding this essay, something tells me I should ask their brand new interim Chairman, Senator David Mark, some things about telephones. Are they still for the poor as he once hollered in his glory days as minister? And since Obi wants to be judged by his past, what of Mark?

How does he see his role in the June 12 saga and the struggle for the survival of democracy in Nigeria?Does he feel now, in retrospect, that his serving as a two- term Senate President in a Democratic Republic of Nigeria was haram?

Although you hardly know where exactly former President Obasanjo stands on issues these days besides his anti- Tinubu rhetoric, he has done Nigerians the favour of sufficiently warning us about the duo of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El Rufai, two other leading opposition titans.

Above are some of the gerontocrats now feverishly doing their  damnedest, to once again take Nigerians back to the slave camp.

    But God forbid.

Nenadi-led LP dismisses resignation ultimatum to Obi

The Labour Party faction led by its acting chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, said no ultimatum has been issued to its presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi.

The faction of the party led by Julius Abure had given Obi a 48-hour ultimatum to resign from the party following his participation in yesterday’s coalition movement to the African Democratic Congress.

In a statement by Ken Eluma Asogwa, senior special adviser, media, to Usman, the party said that on May 26, 2025, it publicly declared its full support for Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts aimed at creating a “robust political alternative to rescue Nigeria from the disastrous misrule of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement said, “The attention of the Labour Party has been drawn to misleading reports and commentaries suggesting that His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, has been issued a 48-hour ultimatum to resign from the party following his participation in the recent coalition talks and the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the leadership of the Labour Party, on May 26, 2025, publicly declared its full support for Mr. Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts aimed at creating a robust political alternative to rescue Nigeria from the disastrous misrule of the APC. That position has not changed.

“We wish to reaffirm that Mr. Peter Obi’s participation in the coalition activities, including the ADC unveiling, was done with the full knowledge, approval, and support of the Labour Party leadership.

“The individuals claiming to have issued an ultimatum to Mr. Obi are political jesters with no legitimate standing in the Labour Party. They are neither recognised by the party nor by the law, having long been sacked by the Supreme Court of Nigeria – the highest court in the land – and suspended from the party for their serial acts of indiscipline and anti-party activities.

“It is the remnants of the disorder and mess left behind by these impostors that the current leadership under Senator Nenadi Usman continues to clean. Therefore, members of the public, and especially the media, are urged to disregard the distractions and mischief from these discredited elements.

“For clarity, the only legitimate and authoritative source of information regarding the official position of the Labour Party on any matter remains the office of Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party.”
