Peter Okoye, brother at war again?

AT times, familiarity breeds communion. At other times, it breeds contempt. That, in a nutshell, is the picture of the relationship between the R&B duo called Psquare. Theirs have been periods of progress interrupted by those of strife. The latest gist in town is that the relationship between the enterprising double acts is once again headed for the rocks, following a sequence of exchanges on the social media which seemed to hint that all is not well between them.

It will be recalled that Paul Okoye and Peter, his brother who burst onto the music scene as Psquare with their hit album, Get Squared, in 2005, fell out with each other in 2015, leading them to briefly embark on solo careers as “Rude Boy” and Mr P”. Mediation from their brother, Jude, as well as pressure from fans and good old common sense, however, prevailed and the two reunited.

News that the two are once again at each other’s throat has spread like wildfire through the entertainment scene. Paul, whose wife recently gave birth to a set of twins in the USA, had posted a message directed at an unnamed woman to steer clear of the group, only for Peter to swiftly respond with what some consider an oblique defence of the said woman. It is no news that Peter’s wife, Lola Omotayo, was a factor in their earlier fallout.

Psquare, whose best-selling album, Game Over, has sold eight million copies, have since cancelled their much-anticipated tour of Canada, fuelling speculations of a cold war between the two.

PETER OKOYE TELLS HIS SIDE OF THE SAD TALE

THE last might not have been heard of the rumoured Psquare split as one half of the superstar music duo recently jetted out of the country to Dubai on an Emirates airline flight. The singer was accompanied by his new manager; Olatunde Michaels, and three dancers.

The Okoye twins have come a long way from their early days of squatting with Howie T; a music promoter at his Ilupeju home. The once inseparable duo hardly sees each other regularly despite living on the same estate, according to information. Further strengthening the rumoured split is the fact that Peter was billed to perform solo as ‘Mr. P’ at the Dubai event. This comes on the heels of his March 12 solo debut at Abuja.

Recall that PSquare have had an ongoing online battle which has pitted him against his manager cum elder brother; Jude and his twin and partner; Paul. The crux of the matter, he claimed in an earlier interview, is the lack of structure in the operations of the group. As he said, “’As I speak to you right now, we don’t have an office, [we have] no structure. When this issue started about five years ago, our lawyer told us the way we run our business is wrong.”

Lending credence to an earlier twitter rant in which he said he was no longer willing to work with his elder brother; Jude, who had managed the twin music stars for a decade. He said, “Because I announced new management, people feel I’m the one going solo, but Paul has already gone solo. He’s moved on and didn’t need to announce any new management because he still works with Jude, so I had to announce mine and believe it or not, people are booking me for gigs already.”  As we speak, the former co-point man of the rested group is now set up to perform as a solo act, and posted booking details online

After the long running battle on and offline, the two have gone their separate ways, and are in the process of concluding the division of all assets owned by the group. Peter stated, “Our lawyer came and told Paul that it’s wrong to share it equally with Jude, but he insisted, so we divided every property we owned in Lagos, Jos, America, and Abuja. In-fact the right and left wing of the Square Ville mansion belongs to Paul and Jude now. So that was how we shared all our properties equally among the three of us about two or three years ago.”

  • Psquare is still together, says Peter Okoye

Psquare is still together, says Peter Okoye

Following what is being perceived as a split of Africa’s biggest singing duo, P-Square, one half of the group, Peter Okoye has said that they will still do projects together. This is against the backdrop of many of their fans urging the twin brothers to come back together as Psquare.

Explaining on his Instagram page last Saturday, Peter noted that henceforth, they would have separate music-managers as he would no longer have anything to do with elder brother, Jude Engees.

Peter further stated that there’s nothing wrong in doing separate projects while still being together as P-Square.

“For public record, I don’t have any issues with my brother Paul the only issue I have is with the management which I have disassociated myself with. There is a clear line between family and business, Jude still remains my brother; he is just no longer my manager. For the record also, Psquare still remains, the only difference is that we are under separate managements and there is nothing wrong with that. I see no wrong in doing separate projects and still being together as Psquare,” Peter wrote.

He also accused his brother of being the first to go solo, stating; “You went solo first by releasing a song with ‘Tiwa’ and your new artists. This doesn’t stop us from producing good music together or giving our fans the best of Psquare, its just time for personal development. I am not against Rudeboy Records, Northside Entertainment and wish you the very best.”

And as if solidifying his commitment to remaining Psquare, Peter also posted a notice of show on his Instagram page, stating; ‘Psquare live in Rotterdam Netherland Saturday 26th March. Be there or be squared. It’s Gonna rock!@palmundoworld #festival.’

Meanwhile, his brother Paul has extended an arm of appeal, calling on Peter to bury the hatchet.

“All you all want is Psquare, all I want is family, love and care!!! Social media is the new root of all evil!! There’s family before Psquare and there will always be family after Psquare. Jude was only a scapegoat and a victim; the person who has been keeping us together for all these years. The truth is Peter and Paul have issues,” he noted.

Paul further apologised to his twin brother for the issues they may have had, urging him to forgive and forget.

“Dear brother am begging you even if you dont want Jude anymore and you dont want Psquare, u re forever going to be my brother. But I wish the three of us could still do these together, bcos its a thing of joy, people love us so much not only because of our good music but seeing brothers doing it together and keeping it together, setting a good example to other families and to our kids,” he added.

PETER OKOYE TESTS SOLO CAREER WITH NEW SINGLE

PETER Okoye, one half of the Nigerian music duo, PSquare, dropped a new single on March 3, titled ‘My eyes’.

The singer dropped the single on YouTube, and contrary to their usual practice, did not feature his brother, Paul on it. The star is presently promoting the single on his Instagram timeline; even as his legion of fans have been sending their feedback.

Many wonder if this development is Peter’s attempt to test the waters of a solo career. The Okoye twins have always performed as a team, until the face-off between Peter and their elder brother and manager, Jude Okoye.

Recall that the twins have been having a long running battle with Jude over the management of their career. One of the complaints being that many of the upcoming  acts Jude refused to let them sign on to their label have turned into bigger stars.

In response to the anxious enquiries of fans unwilling to see the duo go their separate ways, Peter allayed their fears by stating that he was still in good terms with his brother, but that the management needed to change.

He tweeted: “And for those who are saying that Square is breaking up. We are not. Just the management needs to go.”

Peter, the half brother of Africa’s biggest singing duoshared a picture of himself with former super eagles player YakubuAyegbeni on his social media page with the caption “With my bro YakubuAyegbeni, Instabul, Antalya and London am on my way to you. Welcome to my football world.”

It will be recalled that the Olympic milk brand ambassador also floated his personal record label Pclassic two years ago, unveiling his cousin MalcoholicObinna as its first artiste on the label.

Also In a similar development, Peter has alsorenewed his contract with Olympic Milk. He announced this on his social media with a picture of him signing the document with the caption “Renewed, Signed and Sealed… The possibilities of the year have just started. Olympic is here! When the oath of ‘I-do’ rent the air

IT seems many of the celebs had vowed to change their individual status. While many of the guys were in a hurry to bid bye to bachelorhood, some of gals couldn’t wait to slough-off their spinsterhood status.

This year, a couple of weddings took place that rocked the industry and changed the way celebrity weddings are perceived.

Rated as the biggest of them was the union between superstar, Tuface Idibia, and his long-time beau, Annie Macaulay. It was held at the famous five-star Jumeirah Beach Resort in Dubai.

The wedding, which had red as its colour theme, had lots of guests in attendance.

Other famous weddings that took place in the year were those of pop star Peter Okoye and Lola Omotayo as well as Tiwa Savage and Tee Billz who were both joined in traditional weddings. Also on the list of those who wedded traditionally is popular Yoruba actor, Olaniyi Afonja, aka Sanyeri, who got married to the mother of his children and lover of many years. The footage of the wedding was reportedly sold for N1m.

Others celebrity weddings involved actress Toyin Aimakhu who got married to fellow actor, Niyi Johnson; Mercy Aigbe and Lanre Gentry; Matilda Obaseki and Arnold Mozia; Charity Ekeh and Austin Fanni; Uchenna Nnanna and Richard Maduka as well as Uche Ogbodo and Arthur, a Norway-based football agent.

    •Brothers missing at ceremonies

A large number of entertainers, last Sunday, gathered to celebrate their own, as Peter Okoye, the one-half of the popular P-Square group got married to his baby’s mama, Lola Omotayo. Jude Okoye, the celebrator’s elder brother, who is also manager of the P-Square group, and Paul, the other twin were, however, absent at the star-studded event.

Omotayo, who already has two kids for Okoye, was apparently overwhelmed as she exchanged marital vows with the singer at the Ark Event Centre, Lekki, Lagos.

The superlative wedding was witnessed by family and friends of the artiste, some of who included May D, Kate Henshaw, Funke Akindele, Toke Makinwa, Emmanuel Adebayo, Gbenga Adeyinka, Klint Da Drunk, Genevieve Nnaji, DJ Jimmy Jatt, Iyanya and a host of other celebrities.

For a day that could be described as her most cherished moment, the bride wore three outfits; two traditional attires and one shimmering green gown, looking fabulous in them.

One celebrity, who tweeted about his inability to fly into the country to attend the party was fellow artiste, D’banj said he wished he had a private jet. “God go do am”, he prayed. Jude and Paul were said to be having a studio session with another singer, Ayodeji Balogun aka Wizkid.

The wedding, which is now the talk-of-the-town, earlier in the year, came under public scrutiny after Lola gave birth to their second child outside wedlock. She had rebuffed critics, saying she was never desperate or in a hurry to get married to the renowned singer. She claimed she would be content to remain as Okoye’s baby mama than to marry him without being able to support him financially. No sooner than the interview hit the internet than fans began to call her all sorts of unprintable names. Omotayo must have been demoralized by the negative comments that he beau went on Twitter to defend her, saying,” she accepted me when I had nothing. Now that I have achieved a lot, respect her for that. E no easy.” On another occasion he had said, “…Met this woman when I had nothing…she’s a blessing to me, so don’t talk like you know her because you don’t”.

Perhaps to put to rest the furore being generated by having children by Omotayo outside wedlock, Okoye, in August proposed to this mother of his kids.

Okoye, a music superstar, did not opt for a regular kind of proposal; he did it in superstar grand style with a brand new Range Rover Evoque, bouquet of flowers, a hand written sign and an absolutely stunning diamond ring.
