  • Petrol sells for N250 in Calabar

FOR most residents of Calabar, the Cross River State capital, these are hard times following the petrol scarcity that has hit the city.

Few stations that have the product sell it for as high as N220 to N250 per litre, yet consumers scramble for it.

Brawls among buyers are common incidences at the filling stations that have the products available, as black market operators sell for as high as N300 per litre.

Chairman, Cross River State Petrol Tankers’ Association, Mr. Abdullahi Akomaye, said the situation was created by the strike embarked on by his association.

He, however, said following the calling off of the strike yesterday, the city will be flooded with the product in the shortest possible time.

Why petrol is scarce in Abuja, by NNPC

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has blamed the fuel scarcity in Abuja on panic buying and hoarding.

Acting Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division, Fidel Pepple, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday that there was enough fuel for the nation.

Pepple said the corporation through its subsidiary, Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), had at least 30 days stock of petrol and hoped that the queues would soon thin out.

“I want to appeal to consumers to avoid hoarding and panic buying of fuel; the NNPC through its subsidiary, the PPMC , has at least 30 days stock of the product,” he said.

He said NNPC was working with relevant stakeholders to ensure adequate supply of the product across the country.

“We are working hard with the relevant stakeholders to restore normalcy and we hope the queues will thin out very soon,” he added.

According to him, the delay in the repair of the vandalised pipeline in Arepo, Ogun has led to bridging of the product across the country with trucks.

Despite the assurances from NNPC on the availability of fuel, NAN, however, reports that the product was still scarce as evidenced by long queues in filling stations.

The queues resurfaced on Friday, as only few filling stations were dispensing the product, while others remained closed.

  • 20 burnt in petrol tanker explosion

About 20 people, mostly youths, were burnt to death yesterday when a petrol tanker from Lagos exploded at Kudu village in Mokwa Local Government, Niger State.

Many were injured and several houses razed.

An eyewitness told our reporter that the tanker fell because of the bad condition of the Mokwa/Bida Road. Immediately it fell, villagers, mostly youths, trooped to the scene to scoop petrol from the ground. The tanker later exploded.

Efforts by the village head and policemen to disperse the youths were not successful.

“The refusal of the boys to heed the advice was responsible for the high number of casualty,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman Pius Edobor put the casualty figure at 16 and said those injured are being treated at the General Hospital, Mokwa.
