Eric Trump posts, delete illegal ballot selfie on Twitter

Eric Trump, the son of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, may find himself in trouble after he illegally posted a photo of his marked ballot on Twitter on Tuesday.

The photo, which has since been deleted from the 32-year-old Trump’s Twitter feed, was in violation of laws in New York State.

New York along with more than a dozen other states, prohibits voters from posting photos of their marked ballots.

Trump shared the photo of his ballot filled out in support of his father with the note, “it is an incredible honor to vote for my father! He will do such a great job for the U.S.A.’’

It is unclear if posting the image, also called a ballot selfie, will draw any legal consequences.

Last month, singer Justin Timberlake also broke the law by posting a photo of himself in a voting booth in his home state Tennessee, where he was casting his ballot early.

Local officials decided not to review the case but they warned Timberlake of the violation, which is punishable by a fine or up to 30 days in jail, according to local News Channel 3 Memphis.

“We’re thrilled; Justin can’t stop the feeling when it comes to voting so much that he voted early in person is promoting voting to his millions of fans.

“In Tennessee, using electronic devices inside polling locations to take pictures, videos or make calls is not allowed,” the office of Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett said.

Teebillz returns to Instagram, bonds with son in photo

After a bitter separation earlier in the year, there are indications that things are returning to normal between Tunji Balogun aka Teebillz and his family.

On Sunday, Teebillz posted a picture on his Instagram page of him and Jamal, the son he and Tiwa Savage had together, sharing quality time in a pool.

“A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body,” Teebillz wrote.

Also, on Saturday, his first post since six months ago after the messy separation, Teebillz had posted inspirational quotes on his Instagram page. “”We must become the CHANGE we seek in others” – Mahatma Ghandi.

“When you find your purpose and define your values in life, everything else is irrelevant” #DavidBillz @lanreolusola thanks for all the wisdom nuggets #BestLifeCoach

Many of his followers have wished him well while praying for his reunion with his wife.

One of those who commented, abbeyluv91, wrote: “God bless you handsome Tunji…God jam jam…God bless TIWA…God keep blessing your home….I’m happy for you boss..you will never experience sadness again in life..!!! * insha allahu*

Recently, a report indicated that Tiwa is also considering reuniting with her husband.

“You can take my word for it that a reconciliation is in the offing between Tiwa and Teebillz,” an anonymous source was reportedly quoted.

“She has told people close to her that she misses Tunji, and she wants him back in her life. Also, as their son, Jamal (Jam Jam) is growing older, Tiwa wants to ensure that he has a father figure around.”

Also, while performing at the Three Thrones Concert at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, penultimate Sunday, Tiwa had paused to ask marital advice from singing couple, Tunde and Wunmi Obe (TWO).

“You’ve been married for so long, and you’re also in the limelight; how have you managed to keep your relationship intact for all these years?” she asked.

“There’s a lot of pressure on young couples and I’m very jealous of you.”

  • Zamfara 8 photo opp.

That pictures don’t lie is almost an age-old maxim. And in this age of speed, instantaneity, ubiquity and compulsive exposure, you never could tell which eyes are watching you and whose cameras are snapping you. For this reason, Hardball would admonish improved guardedness if not sobriety for earthlings of this age.

Why, it does not hurt to be on your guards anyway if you know how dangerous the world has become. And sobriety, (you may quote Hardball on this) is all you’ve got left. They can never make sober machines!

But Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State does not seem like a man who has a capacity to be guarded; not the least being sober. A photograph in the media (see Vanguard, 25/8 page 8) lends credence. Of course there are other matters with his state’s legislature but as we say in the village, let’s allow that whatever bites during the night is mosquito.

The picture speaks volumes. It was the day after the heinous killing of eight persons in his state by some murderous scoundrels. Yari was not alone in the picture: there was also President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State. The photo, which would have been a wonderful presidential public relations gimmick on a sunny day, shows the president apparently poking a little fun at Governor Shettima, which leaves Governor Yari cracking up in laughter.

Good photograph but exposure at that moment was in very bad taste. The story of the day was the dastardly killing in Zamfara. This photo actually illustrates that sad, sad story in some newspapers. Why is the story gruesome and the photo celebratory?

Recall that it was the same inappropriate photo show when Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi visited the president in Aso Rock Villa shortly after Fulani herdsmen massacred some villagers in his state. Ugwuanyi had dressed in flowing agbada and pictures showed him with the president in a joyous mood. How could he forget so soon that there was mourning back home? The insensitivity inherent in these types of photographs is almost blood-chilling.

And as if to buttress this point, or what we have termed Governor Yari’s photo-finish, the governor, who ought to be sober and mourning, said the damnedest thing after the meeting with the president. Speaking to the press and seeking to debunk some supposed irregularities in the story, the governor said two students of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara were fighting and one of them began to shout that the other abused Prophet Muhammad. Pronto, other students gathered and beat the boy to a coma. Security personnel came around, requested help from a nearby shop owner to ferry the victim to the hospital.

The mob got wind of the rescue effort and traced the victim to the hospital. When they could not gain access to him, they returned to burn down the shop of the Good Samaritan. Not content, they located his house in town, cordoned and razed it with eight people in it.

And here is Yari’s final word of admonition to the world: “… everybody killed in the house were (sic) Muslims and not like the rumours going around in the social media that Christians are being killed in Zamfara.”

He also noted that the killers, who are students of the polytechnic, were at large….hmmmm.

Yaw marks birthday with throwback photo

Celebrated Nigerian OAP, actor and compere, Steve Onu, aka Yaw was a year older yesterday and for him, it was a time for sober reflection.

The Wazobia FM presenter, who arrived London on Saturday, started receiving felicitations from his fans, friends and fellow entertainers from the early hours of Sunday.

However, making ‘his day’ impressionable, the entertainer, in a few words, reflects on his life, especially as it pertains success, conviction and confidence.

He posted a photograph of himself as an infant, placed beside his present adult image, with the caption; “Sometimes we may ask God for success, and He gives us physical and mental stamina. We might plead for prosperity, and we receive enlarged perspective and increased patience, or we petition for growth and are blessed with the gift of grace.

“He may bestow upon us conviction and confideconfidence as we strive to achieve worthy goals.

“Happy birthday to me,” he said on Instagram.

Nadia Buari shares photo without her twins

Amidst speculations and disbelieve surrounding her pregnancy and the reported safe delivery of a set of twins, Ghanaian actress, Nadia Buari, has shared a photo of herself on social networking site, Instagram.

Beaming with an infectious smile and spotting a white long shirt with her left leg crossed over the right, she said of the picture; “Dear diary, this part of my life is called being fulfilled. The spirit of this gift is beyond price and leaves me blessed and in debt. God has certainly got me cheesing from cheek to cheek all day everyday.#AmazingGrace.”

It is not clear if the picture was taken before or after giving birth to her twins, whom she describes as “Little angels”. As some said few weeks ago, she looks too trimmed for a woman who has just given birth to twins.

The actress reportedly gave birth to a set of twins in February, as confirmed by her father, Alhaji Sidiku Buari.

“Yes it is true my daughter has given birth to two beautiful bouncing baby girls and we thank God for everything,” he had said.

  • Jonathan, the photo op ‘General’

    Jonathan, the photo op ‘General’

Four weeks ago, President Goodluck Jonathan and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), using the service chiefs forced Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, into acquiescing to a six-week postponement of elections that the entire country had been primed for.

The military ostensibly needed the time to finish off Boko Haram – or at the very least degrade its fighting capabilities. So they fired off a missive to Jega informing him they would be unavailable for middling assignments like general elections. Boxed into a corner, the commission did the pragmatic thing rather than expose its ad-hoc staff and potential voters to unknown hazards.

But it was also a badly kept secret that the ruling party desperately needed breathing space to stave off what would have been a St. Valentine’s Day electoral massacre had the polls gone ahead on February 14 as scheduled.

So, while the army would be busy bruising the head of the insurgents in the North East, the PDP would take the six-week breather to equally degrade the surging momentum of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.

In that time, the ruling party hoped its monetary advantage would come to tell as the opposition depleted its resources. It would have more time to destroy the credibility of INEC and its leadership as well as besmirch the reputation of APC’s leading lights through negative advertising. But more importantly, it hoped that positive spin-off from a successful military campaign against the insurgents would work to the advantage of the incumbent.

Everything that has happened since the fateful night of February 7 when a doleful Jega announced the movement of the polls, confirms that the postponement was forced through to buy time for Jonathan and PDP. So have their chances been dramatically improved over the last four weeks?

It’s been a long time since the nation enjoyed any measure of sustained success against the insurgents. The gains achieved in the military campaign in the North-East, in conjunction with multinational support from Chad and Cameroon, are heartening. Boko Haram have been forced out of places like Baga, Mubi and Monguno, and for the first time in a long while they are the ones turning tail and running.

That marks out the liberation of territories as the signal achievement of the last month. It lines up with the expectations of the administration.

But any expectations that Jonathan and his party would not seek to make political capital out of the military gains were swiftly dispelled when barely days after the battles the president showed up in fatigues on the frontline for photo opportunities. The victories quickly became PDP’s property and not a national achievement to be owned by the whole country and its people.

Given that these gains happened on his watch, no one can restrain him from dashing to claim credit. But he should also be ready to take responsibility for allowing the mess to fester to the point that a huge chunk of sovereign Nigerian territory was seized by the insurgents. If he wants to take credit for cleaning up a mess that developed under him, he’s welcome.

However, he must understand that it is the electorate who would determine whether he deserves any credit for what the military has accomplished so far. As for me, I am sufficiently impressed with the speed with which Jonathan sewed his Nollywood General’s uniform.

If only he had acted with such alacrity in confronting the insurgency as it evolved over the last five years, we may not be where we are today. Did 15,000 have to die, did millions have to become Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), or tens of thousands become refugees in Cameroun? Did the rural economy and local governance structures of the North-East need to be devastated before the Nigerian state could be roused from its slumber? And for this the president is proudly strutting around with a walking stick!

All the election-focused frontline photo shoots cannot obliterate the fact that the president had all of five years to do the needful, but he dithered at critical points.

How can we forget that years ago when many were canvassing the very tough action that is now being taken, Jonathan was against dealing with Boko Haram harshly because he didn’t believe we should unleash the military against ‘our own people’? What is he doing now?

How can we forget that when in 2012 the United States wanted to declare the sect a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) in order to target and cut off its financial supply, this administration sent very senior officials to the State Department to lobby strenuously against the move? They found listening ears in the then Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

At that point, a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) led by its president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, fed up with its members being murdered by Boko Haram arrived Washington to push for FTO designation and tougher measures against the insurgents. Imagine their shock when they found officials of their own government lobbying furiously for the very opposite.

Today, Jonathan and his party put the gains of the military down to the arrival of recently purchased armaments. The president has been accusing all his predecessors of not equipping the armed forces. At a campaign stop in Lagos not too long ago he alleged that Buhari didn’t buy a single rifle for the military when he was Head of State.

What he was inferring was that the military were not properly equipped. Now it is fashionable to admit the truth in order to project the image of ‘the great armourer’ of the Nigerian military. But anyone who has not been afflicted by political amnesia would recall that Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, said the same thing eons ago. For having the temerity to suggest that the insurgents were better armed than our soldiers, the Presidency unleashed a barrage of verbal attacks against him.

How many recall that at some point the wives of a group of soldiers posted to the frontline staged an embarrassing public protest insisting that their spouses wouldn’t move an inch unless they were properly equipped?

How many lives were lost before the president finally accepted that truly our soldiers were outgunned? Today, the president sends delegations to go and appease the parents of the Chibok girls. This is the same man who with his wife made public statements claiming that the abductions never happened! In one of the lowest points of the Jonathan tenure, the First Lady wept theatrically and claimed that the whole episode was the work of her husband’s political foes.

The truth is that the Jonathans don’t do empathy very well. Today, the president is posturing as the champion of communities like Baga. But many will recall that when news first broke that Boko Haram had massacred an unprecedented 2000 persons in the community, not a peep was heard from the Presidency. Instead, Jonathan was busy sending condolence messages to the people of France over the killing of 12 people at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine!

If he truly loved the military he would not have waited until the election week to do what he claims his predecessors left undone. People are not fooled. They can tell that this love-in with the armed forces is election-flavoured. It is just too late in the day to start to show leadership in this critical area.

A tired old cliché says that the hood does not make the monk. It is action, not a well-cut uniform, that makes a credible Commander-in-Chief. When President Barack Obama signed off on the execution of Osama bin Ladin he didn’t need to dress up like General Norman Shwarzkopf of the Iraqi Desert Storm war fame.

It is going to take more than the two-week military offensive in the North-East to alter perceptions about Jonathan’s performance as it concerns insecurity. Voters are going to be asking themselves: between General Buhari and ‘General’ Jonathan who will do a better job in guaranteeing national security? You are that voter: decide and vote wisely!
