  • Etisalat backs Lagos Photo Festival

    Etisalat Nigeria, a leading telecommunications company, has announced its readiness to partner with the organisers of the annual Lagos Photo Festival towards staging this year’s edition tagged “Staging Reality, Documenting Fiction”.

    Speaking at a press briefing held at the African Artist Foundation, Ikoyi, Lagos to kick-off the event, Enitan Denloye, Director, Brands and Communications, Etisalat Nigeria, said that the company was committed to supporting the arts, promoting excellence, nurturing talents and providing a platform for people to express themselves and communicate their ideas.

    According to him, Lagos Photo is the first photography festival in Nigeria that uses the power of photography to bring stories that capture individual experiences and identities from all over the world.  “We are delighted to have another opportunity to support creativity in Nigeria. Etisalat sees this platform as an identification of the growing arts and culture industry in Nigeria and our partnership with Lagos Photo re-inforces our commitment to celebrating our culture and creative talents. We are reiterating our commitment to keeping our customers connected to unique experiences that connect with their lifestyle,” he said.

    Also, the Director, Lagos Photo Foundation, Wunika  Mukan, disclosed that the 2014 Lagos Photo Festival would examine contemporary photographers working in Africa who toe the line between photography and truth, by incorporating conceptual practices that expand traditional photographic approaches and techniques.

    The theme of this year’s event, according to Mukan, will also explore “how photographers imagine different futures and charter fictive worlds using photography as a catalyst to explore the changing realities of Africa today.”

  • A lift for Lagos Photo at gala night

    The second LagosPhoto Gala night organised by LagosPhoto Foundation has hosted sponsors, supporters, art patron, and friends of the foundation at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    It was put together to celebrate photography and also to raise funds for the LagosPhoto Foundation with an evening of art that included a candle light dinner, live auction conducted by Roger Woodbridge.

    With the theme, Observation no be crime, the event auctioned photographs that tell different stories about the situation of the Nigerian environment. Photographs were donated by leading Nigerian and international artists such as Kelechi Amadi-Obi, David de Jong, Christina de Middel, Medina Dugger, Delphine Fawundu, Alixandra Fazzina, Stanley Greene, Nick Hagen, Jane Hahn, Robin Hammond, Samuel James, Benedicte Kurzen, Joseph Penney, RijaSolo, Andrea Stultiens, and Hans Wilschut. The photographs represent a selection of images that were exhibited in previous LagosPhoto festivals.

    The evening had performances by Ebisan, Lolo and the Bogo Band, Wura Samba, Afrologic, and the Nimbus Band. Supporters include Segura Viudas, Seven-Up Bottling Company Plc, Porsche, Universal. The annual LagosPhoto Gala is proudly sponsored by Eko Hotel & Suites, Etisalat, and UBS. Furniture, Lufthansa, IQ Booth, and X.O. Wine Stores Limited.

    LagosPhoto is embodied in the exploration of historical and contemporary issues, the sharing of cultural practices, and the promotion of social programs.

    The festival, which will hold this month, will feature activities such as exhibitions, workshops, artist presentations, discussions and large scale outdoor prints displayed throughout the city with the aim of reclaiming public spaces and engaging the general public with multifaceted stories of Africa.

    LagosPhoto aims to establish a community for contemporary photography which will unite local and international artists through images that encapsulate individual experiences and identities from across all of Africa.

    Last year, the first yearly LagosPhoto fundraiser featured an evening of arts and musical entertainment. It also had a live auction, which witnessed a record breaking sale for photography in Nigeria.

  • Photo Africa announces jury

    The Organising Committee of the Life In My City Art Festival (LIMCAF), the Enugu-based annual youth art festival, has announced a cast of experienced and internationally recognised photo artists who have accepted to be members of the Committee of Jurors for the 2013 edition of its Photo Africa contest.

    The committee includes photo art practitioners, such as, Uche James Iroha (Nigeria), James Banor (Ghana), Piere Dufour (France), Amaize Ojeikere (Nigeria), Yehia el Alaily (Egypt) and John Fleetwood (South Africa). The Committee’s work will be co-ordinated by LIMCAF’s Art Director, Ayo Adewunmi assisted by Emeka Egwuibe, a member of the Organising Committee.

    The Committee’s task is to select the best 40 out of the 152 entries received from 18 African countries, which will be featured in an exhibition to be mounted in Enugu during the grand finale week of LIMCAF. Based on the theme life in my city and the guidelines provided, the Committee of Jurors will agree on and recommend one overall prize winner to the Organising Committee of the festival.

    Photo Africa is a recent addition (the first one was held last year and was won by Nigeria’s Eremina Jumbo) to the portfolio of LIMCAF, the pan-Nigeria youth art project designed to encourage and promote awareness of environmental and cultural issues through art, as well empower young people economically by providing opportunities for the sale of their works, winning of handsome prizes as well as the exposure of their creative outputs on a credible national and international platform.

    In keeping with these aims, Photo Africa is an online contest open to young African photographers living and working in Africa. For now it attracts a sole prize of USD 1000 dollars in addition to an all expenses paid invitation to Enugu for the prize winner along with other runners up to visit Enugu during the grand finale week of LIMCAF due to climax this year on Saturday, October 12.

    Life In My City is the brainchild of Chief Robert Oji founder and CEO of Rocana Nigeria Limited, a leading outdoor advertising, printing and packaging outfit based in Enugu. Its board is chaired by Elder K. U. Kalu CON, a former chairman of Union Bank and current Managing Director of a consulting firm, Skoup and Associates.

    The LIMCAF grand finale week is a feast of exhibitions featuring the selected best works in five visual art categories of the over 1000 entries from the festival’s 12 zones around the country  in five visual art categories in addition to an all photo exhibition of the 40 selected.

  • Lagos backs LagosPhoto festival

    The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism and Inter-Governmental Relations has endorsed the 2013 LagosPhoto Festival organised yearly by the LagosPhoto Foundation.

    According to a statement by the foundation, the Director, LagosPhoto, Azu Nwagbogu, met with the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Ministry of Tourism and Inter-Governmental Relations, Fadipe Ashamu Sewanu, on May 8 to finalise the endorsement deal between the Lagos State government and LagosPhoto Foundation.

    “This is in line with the ministry’s set vision of encouraging private sector initiatives on tourism that drive in showcasing artistic excellence in Lagos State. This milestone will enable LagosPhoto Foundation to achieve the objectives of contributing to the education of youths in Lagos and beyond and creating a distinct approach to photography and art exhibitions that reflect and pay homage to African culture,” the statement added.

    LagosPhoto Festival with the theme The Megacity and the Non-City ,will hold for a month commencing  with a grand opening ceremony/exhibition on October 26, showcasing  images depicting this year’s theme. Indoor and outdoor spaces around Lagos will be used this year, making the festival accessible to the public.

  • Lagos Photo partners World Press Photo

    LagosPhoto, the first and only international arts festival of photography in Nigeria, has entered into a three-year partnership with World Press Photo, to bring the worldwide competition of photojournalism and documentary photography to Lagos.

    The judging process for World Press Photo which began on February 2 will end on February 14. Organisers of the LagosPhoto said they are proud Lagos is on World Press Photo’s list of major international cities.

    This year’s edition of LagosPhoto will open in October, with expansion of its size and scope.

    Founded in 1955, World Press Photo is known as the leading international contest of visual journalism internationally. World Press Photo’s aims include supporting professional press photography on a wide international scale, to stimulate developments in photojournalism, encourage the transfer of knowledge, help develop high professional standards in photojournalism and promote free and unrestricted exchange of information.

    World Press Photo organises educational projects throughout the world: seminars, workshops and the annual Joop Swart Master class. Each year, distinguished juries of photography professionals announce prizes for winning photographs, which are assembled as an exhibition and travelled to over 45 countries over the course of the year.

    As the largest and most prestigious international photography contest, the World Press Photo exhibition reaches an audience of over two million people annually.

    Launched in 2010, LagosPhoto is an annual photography festival held in Lagos, with events including exhibitions, workshops, and large-scale outdoor prints throughout the city with the aim of reclaiming public spaces and engaging the general public with multifaceted stories of Africa. LagosPhoto presents a contemporary and historical visual essay of the continent to both a local and global audience. In its fourth edition, LagosPhoto 2013 will open in October, ever-expanding its size and scope.

    The 56th World Press Photo Contest will be chaired by Gary Knight, the founder of VII Photo Agency, widely considered a leading photography agency worldwide.
