Plateau becoming a killing field, NNPP laments

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has condemned Friday’s attack on communities in Mangu and Bokkos local government areas of Plateau, saying the State is fast becoming a killing field in the country.

The party asked the Federal Government to seriously consider an overhaul of the security architecture in Plateau to stem the tide of recurring killings in the state.

In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, the party lamented the spate of killings in Plateau State was becoming a national nightmare and embarrassment.

While commiserating with the people in the affected communities and Plateau State in general, the NNPP asked security agencies, particularly those in the intelligence unit, to do more by unravelling such killing plots before they are carried out.

The party acknowledged the efforts of the security agencies so far, adding that more needed to be done with greater support from the Federal Government to seriously tackle the recurring killing of people in Plateau which seems to have defied solutions.

The NNPP said: “It is mind-boglling to hear about the incessant attacks and killings in Plateau State which is now a national embarrassment. So many families suffer from these attacks and the situation looks to defy solution.

“The security agencies seem to be doing their best, but what is obvious is that there is a need to tweek the security architecture in the state especially for the intelligence units to do more proactively so that these attacks are nipped in the bud and thus curtail the wanton bloodbath in the State.”

“And the militias not satisfied had to come in again this morning despite the presence of security. They were given a chase but I don’t know the number of casualties but as of yesterday six persons  were reported dead’.

Furthermore, a statement by the liason officer to governor Mutfwang, Hon. Plateau orphans cautioned against anti-social vices

Orphans living in orphanages in Plateau State have been cautioned against drug abuse and general anti-social vices.

The caution, which was given yesterday at the launching of an initiative by Kingdom Kids Klub tagged ‘Stand Out Aging Out Africa (AOA) Mentoring Network,’ also featured the unveiling and allocations of mentors to each of the orphans.

The orphans, who are over 50 from across seven orphanages in the state, will be guided along attitudinal and career path by the mentors, as they transit from the orphanages into the larger society.

Speaking at the event, the Global Coordinator for Kingdom Kids Klub, Sandra Chikan, said the concept of the programme was as a result of a research which showed that some of the children or teenagers stay longer than necessary at the orphanage homes, which is not supposed to be so.

She said that was why they came up with the initiative whereby orphans of particular ages could transit from the orphanages into the larger society, adding that they had arranged for accomplished people in life to volunteer as mentors, so that they can guide them accordingly.

“From the researches we have done, many of those children in orphanage homes have been there from above five years and up to 11 years, and which is not supposed to be so.

“But as the children grow and reach 18 years and above, and due to leave the orphanages, where do they go to and what happens to them? That is why we set up ‘Stand Out’ initiative, so that they can find men or women who are already accomplished in life and doing something tangible, so that they can help mentor and train the children and build relationships.

“So that when the children leave then homes, they will be able to stand on their own, have something doing for themselves, contribute to the society and nation building.

“Being in an orphanage alone is a disadvantage because there are many things you would not know or have access to, but with these available mentors who will be on ground for them, we are sure that these children will be well tutored and guided, and they will not fall into bad gangs upon leaving the homes.”

Chikan said the programme is for one year for starters, after which they will review it for onward continuation, adding that the mentees were carefully chosen and screened.

Programme Manager, Kingdom Kids Klub, Sharon Osondu, said the programme is necessary because some of the kids from 15 years and above are always afraid of leaving because the orphanages provide them a kind of safe haven.

    • Mutfwang condemns killings, charges security agents to hunt perpetrators

Gunmen struck in fresh attack on Bokkos community Friday night, killing no fewer than 10 persons.

Source from the community alleged that a group of terrorists invaded Mandung-Mushu and Kopnanle villages at the dead of the night to carry out the killing of targeted victims.

A member of the community, Barrister Farmasum Fuddang, who signed a statement as

Chairman, Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard said: “Last night, April 12, our community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State faced a horrific attack resulting in the senseless slaughter of at least 10 of our members.

“Despite the presence of security forces, including the DSS, army and police, the perpetrators, identified as Fulani terrorists, were allowed to carry out their heinous acts with impunity.

“Under the cover of darkness, more than 50 armed terrorists descended upon the villages of Mandung-Mushu and Kopnanle, targeting innocent, unarmed and peaceful residents as they slept.

“The assailants set fire to homes and a place of worship, mercilessly gunning down fleeing civilians while nearby soldiers failed to intervene effectively.

“This brazen attack, which predominantly targeted children, appears to be part of a calculated effort to instill fear and perpetrate further displacement within our communities.

“We condemn this act of terror, which we believe is aligned with a broader agenda to impose Sharia law and seize control of our lands.

“Just hours before this tragedy unfolded, BCDC Vanguard submitted a petition to the Department of State Services (DSS), challenging a leaked memo that falsely accused our people of planning violence against Fulani residents.

“We unequivocally stated that the intelligence behind the memo was fabricated and defamatory.

“Despite our efforts to rectify these falsehoods, the security apparatus failed to protect our community from the very threats we highlighted.

“We are appalled by the apparent prioritization of the lives of Fulani residents over our own and demand answers from the authorities.

“The timing of this attack, following closely on the heels of the DSS’s erroneous warning of an impending assault on Fulani communities, raises serious concerns about collusion or deliberate neglect.

“We refuse to accept such injustice and demand immediate transparency and accountability. This is more so that advance notices of attack in the area were published and circulated at least a week prior to the so-called DSS intelligence.

“The DSS ignored these warnings and instead chose to implicate the victims despite acknowledging in their memo that the Fulani were responsible for the six-day attack that claimed over 300 of our members last Christmas.

“We wish to put on record that the DSS alert is synonymous with the age-long strategy of the Fulani terrorists who often raise false alarms to intimidate residents and/or justify planned attacks. And unless the DSS clears its name on this, we reckon that it is complicit and compromised.”

The statement warned that should the authorities fail to provide satisfactory explanations within the shortest possible time, “we are prepared to pursue legal recourse”.

Reacting to the incident yesterday, Plateau State governor, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, condemned in strong terms the renewed attacks that have claimed several lives and property in Kopnanle community and Mandar Shar village in Mangu and Bokkos local government areas of the state.

Governor Mufwang described the attacks as unfortunate and unacceptable, especially now that the government is working to restore peace and security and facilitate the return of displaced persons to their homes.

The governor, in a statement by his spokesman, Gyang Bere, warned perpetrators of these dastardly acts to desist forthwith as government is determined to fish them out to face justice.

While appreciating the intervention of security agencies in the protection of lives and property in the state, Governor Mutfwang urged them to redouble their efforts in discharging their constitutional responsibility of protecting innocent communities.

He expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families and the affected communities and prayed for quick healing of those who sustained gunshot injuries.

The governor called on community stakeholders across the state to activate dispute resolution mechanisms in tackling issues of disagreement and report without delay early warning signs to constituted authorities for prompt intervention.

  • Conspiracy against the constitution in Plateau State

Conspiracy against the constitution in Plateau State

In a brazen display of political pride, both Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State and House of Assembly speaker Gabriel Dewan paralysed the State House of Assembly for months by refusing to swear in 16 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers declared winners of last year’s legislative poll by the Court of Appeal last November. They pussyfooted until last Friday before mystifyingly swearing in nine of the lawmakers, including a Labour Party legislator. Thereafter the governor met the lawmakers, saluted their ‘independence’ and enthused over their legislative work. It became clear that the dithering in the legislature, which is still conducting business at the old Government House, was a conspiracy. It is unclear what ghosts haunt Mr Mutfwang. Does he fear being presented a majority APC House of Assembly? Does he fear being impeached sometime in the future by hostile lawmakers, in a replay of the childish wrangling in Rivers State?

Hon Dewan is the only Young Progressives Party (YPP) member in the Assembly. He seemed a place-holder for the PDP but appears afraid of being impeached and replaced by an APC lawmaker. His emergence is obviously a product of shadowy compromises undertaken when the APC legislators had yet to win their case in the courts. Since last November, however, both the governor and the speaker have been ill at ease, and have stalled the inauguration of the APC members and engaged in a fruitless merry-go-round in the courts hoping that in light of the Supreme Court judgement validating the governor’s election, the Court of Appeal victory of the APC members could be reversed. The case is still pending. The APC lawmakers’ victory will, however, not be reversed, and Hon Dewan is merely chasing shadows. Despite the hostility of the Plateau public and their past but now waning animus against the APC over the same-faith presidential ticket, there is nothing anyone, governor or lawmaker or the public, can do to mitigate the severity and direction of the case. Indeed, there is a limit to which they can hedge their responsibilities.

Hon Dewan’s procrastinations are unjustifiable but understandable. He has nothing to lose. What is perplexing is the governor’s flagrant disobedience to court judgement and the constitution. He has misled the Plateau public, muddled up the legal case against his party, engaged in self-help, and pretended not to be involved in the dilatoriness enacted by the obsequious Hon Dewan. No, the governor is culpable. He is behind the whole saga, and he continues to pull the strings. He is disrespectful of the law and sets a very bad example for future generations on public behaviour. He has also displayed poor judgement in a complicated matter that nevertheless beckons on him to rise to statesmanship and greatness.

Are his fears of impeachment and perhaps lack of legislative cooperation real? They probably are. But then it is in the face of such dire antagonisms that leaders and leadership are forged. Unfortunately, Mr Mutfwang has chosen the easy way out: covertly assailing the courts, hoping for a legal deus ex machina, and generally stalling the process in the hope that some kind of unearthly solutions can be found. Neither he nor Hon Dewan has the right whatsoever to stall the swearing in of the lawmakers. Despite their high offices, they are not above the law and the constitution. Hear the governor waxing lyrical when Hon Dewan presented the exultant lawmakers to him: “Today brings me immense joy. I have always advocated for the seamless functioning of the three arms of government. Thus, it is gratifying to witness the House fully operational, poised to safeguard the interests of the people of Plateau State across various constituencies. Despite wrong accusations of obstructing the House’s inauguration, it is evident that the House is fully in charge of its affairs, and I commend you for that…” The governor knows he is lying. Did they not say the courts had stayed their hands?

Read Also: Ndume condemns electricity tariff hike

The APC needs to sanction their consenting and conspiratorial lawmakers who broke ranks with their colleagues. They acted disreputably in the face of the governor’s divide and rule, and are thus unworthy of the positions they were elected into. It is even alleged that the nine had agreed to resign from the legislature after their swearing-in. If the governor will not do what is right, and the state’s attorney general will not advise him, it may be time the federal attorney general wrote the state, urging them to mend their ways. Too many childish actions endangering democracy are emanating from some states. For the sake of democracy and political stability, even in the face of the judiciary muddying the political waters, principal political actors should apply wisdom, eschew populism, and be prepared to sacrifice everything for the sake of unborn generations. Plateau’s top political actors, like Rivers State’s dissimulative leaders, have behaved most atrociously and egotistically.

Mr Mutfwang should put a halt to the foolishness in the State House of Assembly. He is a lawyer who claims to be a man of faith; he can’t say he does not know what to do. Hon Dewan privately claimed his disinclination to swear in the rest seven lawmakers was due to certain documents at his disposal. Do those documents supersede the law and the constitution? And where on earth are Plateau State elders? If they can’t judge between the controversial jurisprudence of the appellate court in the matter of the 16 victorious APC legislators and the embarrassing self-help embarked upon by their governor and his conniving legislative allies as well as the disinterested public, it means they deliberately undermine the integrity of their eldership and the wisdom that should come with it.
