Northern Elders condemn killing of travellers in Plateau

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has condemned the brutal massacre of innocent Nigerian travellers in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

NEF said the nation can no longer afford to treat such atrocities as routine tragedies.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, the Forum said it was “shaken to its core” by the premeditated slaughter of 18 citizens—including women and children—who were ambushed, hacked to death, and set ablaze while travelling to a wedding in Quan-Pan, Plateau State.

Jiddere said: “This premeditated atrocity is not only a crime against humanity but a stark indictment of a nation losing its grip on the most basic duty of governance, the protection of human life.”

According to credible reports, the victims, ordinary citizens, including women and children hailed from Basawa, Sabon Gari Local Government Area in Kaduna State were on their way to a wedding in Quan-Pan, Plateau State, aboard a clearly marked official vehicle of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. After losing their way, they sought help in Mangu, only to be met with savagery.

Jiddere added, “They were ambushed, hacked down, and burned alive in what can only be described as a merciless, calculated act of terror. Of the eighteen aboard, only two survived, rescued by the courage of a single local resident.

“Let us be clear: this was not a case of mistaken identity. It was not random. It was an act of evil. In any functioning society, a marked official vehicle carrying unarmed civilians, particularly women and children, would be seen as sacrosanct. That such a group could be slaughtered in cold blood speaks volumes about the depths of hate, lawlessness, and moral decay festering in parts of our nation.

“This tragedy is part of a much darker narrative, one where the Northern region of Nigeria is bleeding daily from unchecked violence. In the North West, villages are emptied and lives stolen through mass abductions and killings.

“In the North East, terror persists. In the North Central, random killings and kidnappings have become routine. What was once sporadic unrest has mutated into systemic terror, thriving under the shadow of impunity and governmental inertia.

“The Northern Elders Forum categorically rejects silence, tokenism, or bureaucratic lip service. This is not the time for vague promises. It is the time for uncompromising, sustained action.”

The Forum rejected what it called “silence, tokenism, and bureaucratic lip service” in response to the tragedy, insisting that only uncompromising action could stem the tide of violence.

The NEF made the following demands: “Immediate arrest, public prosecution, and uncompromising punishment of all those responsible for the Mangu massacre. Justice must be swift and public.

“Accountability from the Plateau State Government and all relevant security agencies, including restitution to the victims’ families and to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

“A federal security overhaul, not symbolic redeployments, but a real, strategic, and well-funded campaign to reclaim the North from bandits, terrorists, and killers.

Massive deployment of trained security personnel and intelligence assets to violence-ridden regions across Northern Nigeria.

“Clear timelines, measurable outcomes, and public accountability from the Federal Government. Enough with empty reassurances. The North is tired of burying its dead.

“This country is bleeding, and it is bleeding from the North. The obligation to protect life and restore order is not a favour the government grants, it is a constitutional imperative. Failure to act now is not just negligence. It is complicated.

“To the grieving families, the people of Giwa LGA, and the Ahmadu Bello University community, NEF extends its deepest condolences. We grieve with you. We rage with you. And we stand with every Nigerian regardless of ethnicity, faith, or region, who has suffered because those in power have failed to keep them safe.

“This moment demands courage. It demands honesty. Above all, it demands action. Enough is enough.”

Reps minority caucus urges holistic strategy on insecurity, demands justice for Plateau killings

The Minority Leadership of the House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to adopt a comprehensive approach, combining justice, dialogue, security, and reconciliation, to address insecurity across the country, warning that fragmented responses are no longer effective.

In a statement signed on Monday by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, Deputy Minority Leader Aliyu Sani Madaki, Minority Whip Ali Isa JC, and Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi, the lawmakers strongly condemned the brutal killing of about 12 wedding guests in Plateau State last Friday.

They urged both the Federal and Plateau State governments to immediately launch a full-scale investigation into the incident, ensure those responsible are brought to justice, and implement robust security and reconciliation measures in the state.

The statement reads, “We are deeply saddened and outraged by the heinous attack that took place in Plateau State on Friday, June 21, 2025, in which 31 innocent wedding travelers, members of the Basawa community from Zaria, Kaduna State, were ambushed while en route to a marriage ceremony in Pau.

“Among the 12 killed were the father, younger brother, and uncle of the groom. The grief and anguish visited upon this family, and upon a community that had set out in joy, are both staggering and unconscionable.

“According to survivors, the victims had clearly explained their mission: they were not combatants, nor were they party to any conflict. They bore no weapons, only gifts, kola nuts, and goodwill. Yet, they were met with suspicion, rage, and deadly violence. The assailants ignored every plea for understanding. Such cruelty offends the conscience of every peace-loving Nigerian.

“We commend the prompt intervention of the Nigerian Army, whose swift action prevented further loss of life. But we must ask: how did we get here? How did we become a nation where joyful travelers can be mistaken for threats, and murdered in cold blood?

“We cannot ignore the wider context. Mangu Local Government Area has, in recent years, become a cauldron of herdsmen attacks. Just last night, 19 people were reportedly killed and many homes set ablaze.

“In the absence of effective state protection, it is sadly understandable that local communities have resorted to desperate acts of self-defence, forming vigilante groups and responding to every movement with suspicion.

“In such an atmosphere of fear and retribution, the line between justice and mob violence disappears; and innocent people, like the victims of Friday’s tragedy, are consumed in the chaos.

“Peace, law, and order cannot thrive where fear reigns and the state appears absent. It is the solemn duty of the State and Federal Governments to ensure that peace-building mechanisms are urgently instituted. Dialogue must be fostered between communities. Early warning systems must be activated. And most critically, perpetrators of violence must be brought to justice swiftly and transparently.

“We call on the government of Plateau State and the Federal Government to launch a full investigation into this attack, to bring all those responsible to account, and to urgently implement security and reconciliation initiatives in the State.

“Piecemeal responses will no longer suffice. What is required is a holistic approach that combines justice, dialogue, security, and reconciliation.

“To the grieving families of Basawa, we extend our deepest sympathies. This tragedy must be the turning point; not just in words, but in action”.

Northern senators forum condemns Plateau killing of travellers, demands swift justice

The Northern Senators Forum (NSF) has condemned the brutal killing of innocent travellers in Plateau State, describing the attack as barbaric and unacceptable.

Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, expressed the Forum’s outrage in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

According to the statement, the attack occurred on Friday, June 20, 2025, when an 18-seater bus carrying passengers from the Basawa community in Zaria, Kaduna State, to Qua’an Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State was ambushed in Mangu Local Government Area.

“The Northern Senators Forum (NSF) vehemently condemns the brutal killing of innocent travellers,” the statement read. “On behalf of the Forum, I extend our deepest condolences to the government and people of Kaduna State, particularly the bereaved families affected by this heinous attack.”

Senator Yar’Adua described the incident as a cowardly act that has no place in a civilised society, stressing that swift and decisive justice must be served.

He noted that such violence violates the constitutional right of every Nigerian to move freely and live in any part of the country, as guaranteed under Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution.

“These senseless killings are a threat to the fabric of our national unity and must not be allowed to continue,” the Forum emphasised, calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and restore peace in the affected areas.

“We call on the Nigeria Police Force to enhance its strategic information gathering capabilities to prevent and effectively respond to such crimes, ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.

“Upon conducting our preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the victims were travelers from Zaria, Kaduna State, who were in transit to Quan’pan LGA to attend a wedding ceremony when they lost their way.

“Their vehicle was illegally stopped by the angry mob and set ablaze. As a result of this unfortunate incident, some of the passengers lost their lives, while seven persons sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“In a display of courage, our men, in collaboration with other security agencies, were able to rescue fourteen (14) persons unhurt.”

The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, had since visited the scene and deployed personnel from the State Intelligence Department (SID), State CID, and Tactical Teams to intensify investigations and apprehend more suspects.

    Mutfwang expresses shock, condemns killings

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, yesterday expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragic mob action that claimed the lives of 12 travellers in Mangun District of Mangu Local Government Area at about 9.47 pm pm on Friday.

Governor Mutfwang, who visited the survivors in the hospital and the scene of the incident, expressed profound grief, describing the mob action as totally condemnable and avoidable.

He noted with sadness that Mangun and the adjoining districts of Chakfem in Mangu LGA and Mushere in Bokkos LGA have for over a month suffered coordinated terrorist assaults resulting in daily casualties and mass displacements, plunging communities into mourning and distress.

He, however, said the prolonged attacks do not justify such a senseless act against innocent commuters.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, Governor Mutfwang said:  “Today is a tragic day for us in Plateau State.

“I never imagined that such a senseless act of violence could occur within our borders, especially considering the commendable efforts of our youths in this community and neighbouring districts, who have consistently risen to support security agencies in defending against criminal incursions.

“It is deeply disheartening that the same youths who have shown courage and patriotism would turn around and take the law into their own hands.

“This is utterly unacceptable, and the government will not sweep it under the carpet.

“We are working to build a Plateau that is welcoming to all and hospitable to visitors.

“We have been educating our young people about the importance of allowing free passage on all roads across the state, and this incident has come to us as a rude shock.”

The distraught governor, however, assured that Plateau State remains a safe place for all travellers.

He said: “I have spoken with my colleague, the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, to brief him on this unfortunate incident.

“I have also reached out to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Zazzau, to express my heartfelt condolences over this tragic loss of lives.

“In the spirit of solidarity, we will be sending a high-level delegation to commiserate with the government and people of Kaduna State as well as the Zazzau Emirate.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the North has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Rev. Fr. Dr. Polycarp Lubo, the Plateau State chairman of the association.

Fr. Lubo passed away in the early hours of Sunday following a short illness linked to injuries from a recent accident.

In a condolence message, the Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, described the late priest as a fearless and committed servant of God who stood for justice, peace, and the well-being of the oppressed.

Hayab noted that Fr. Lubo’s words during the Plateau Peace Walk—“we deserve to live”—captured the pain and voice of victims affected by violence and displacement in Plateau and other parts of Nigeria.

He said the late Catholic priest also played a significant role in fostering religious cooperation, working with leaders of other faiths under the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development to support immunization campaigns and the fight against polio in Nigeria.

Hayab highlighted that as treasurer of Northern CAN, Fr. Lubo brought discipline, transparency, and strong leadership to the association’s financial operations.

He stressed that the priest’s passing has left a major void in the Northern Christian community.

Northern CAN extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, the Plateau CAN leadership, his parish community, and Christians across the state.

The body also urged security agencies and government officials to honour Fr. Lubo’s memory by strengthening efforts to protect lives and promote fairness across Plateau and Nigeria.

Stakeholders advocate administrative independence, financial autonomy for SIECs

Stakeholders in the electoral process want administrative independence and financial autonomy for State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) to be prioritised.

They stated that this was a necessary step toward strengthening the ability of SIECs to deliver on their constitutional mandates.

The stakeholders said this in a communique issued at the 13th National Delegates’ Conference (NDC) of Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON) in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.

Themed “Local Government Elections in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges, and Opportunities,” the conference brought together participants from all 36 states, including representatives from academia, civil society, and key electoral stakeholders.

Officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme, Development Alternatives Incorporated (DAI), and the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) were also in attendance.

The communiqué, jointly signed by Jossy Eze, National Chairman, and Joseph Aremo, National Secretary of the forum, said that “improved autonomy,” was the “foundation for restoring public trust in the conduct of local government elections.”

To address growing concerns about public perception and misinformation, the communiqué urged SIECs to “embark on regular public engagements with election stakeholders across the 768 local government areas,” adding that such efforts would help build public confidence in the capacity of SIECs to conduct credible and transparent polls.

It also highlighted the critical role of political parties and citizens in enhancing democratic accountability.

According to the communiqué, “political parties, as the only platforms for nominating candidates for elections, should evolve mechanisms that support the emergence of leadership with proven integrity.”

It further called on the electorate to “consistently monitor and assess the performance of their elected representatives in order to promote accountability.”

Building on existing electoral reforms, the communiqué recommended the extension of legal and institutional frameworks that have strengthened the operations of INEC to also apply to SIECs, noting that such reforms would enable more effective and standardised performance at the state level.

On legislative reform, the communiqué urged State Houses of sssembly to “adopt the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 regarding the procedure for conducting Area Council elections.”

Doing so, it said, would “help ensure uniformity and certainty in the conduct of local government elections.”

In addition, the communiqué emphasised the importance of grassroots education and voter mobilisation, encouraging SIECs to deepen partnerships with civil society organisations and development partners to support voter education and civic engagement.

“All politics is local and it is essential that SIECs become not just administrators of elections but champions of civic competence,” the communique added.
