FRSC takes road safety campaign to Churches in Jos

The Plateau Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has taken its sensitisation of motorists on safety measures to Churches and other worship centres in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign kicked off on Sunday at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Gigiring, Jos, with the Sector Commander, Mrs. Pat Emeordi, declaring that the initiative was aimed at reducing road traffic crashes.

“Our visit to this Church today (Sunday) is to commemorate the 4th UN Global Safety Week.

“The theme for this year’s UN Safety Week is ‘Managing Speed’; we are focusing on that and want to urge all motorists to obey speed limits,” she said.

She urged Christians to obey traffic rules just as they obey God’s tenets so as to rid Nigeria of crashes on its highways.

“As Christians, we respect and obey God’s commandments; we should equally obey traffic rules and regulations.

“God created roads for safety and not for us to die on them. He also created the traffic regulations so that we shall obey them toward safety. So, if we refuse to obey traffic regulations, we are disobeying God,” she said.

Noting that road accidents do not recognise wealth or status, she challenged Nigerians to support the campaign by cautioning drivers against speeding “even if they are our parents”.

She warned drivers against wrong overtaking, speeding, overloading and use of phones, saying that anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law.

Yelwa made the disclosure when Mr. Henry Yunkwap, the Majority Leader, Plateau House of Assembly, visited him in Jos on Thursday.

‘‘The potato value chain project will be formally launched in the state by June.

‘‘This project, to be funded by the AfDB, will cover production to the marketing of the product, and in turn give room for better yield and increase the income of the state.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the projects will also cover storage, processing and marketing of potato.

He stated that the project, initially designed to cover the nine potato-producing local government areas, would now cover all the 17 local government areas of the state.

‘‘Those that don’t produce potato will benefit from other infrastructure such as roads, electricity, construction of dams and what have you,’’ he said.

Yelwa further said the project would create jobs and make potato production a viable business where a lot of idle persons would be engaged in the production of potato.

  • A health boost in Plateau constituency

A member of the House of Representatives Hon Solomon Maren has strengthened health facilities in Bokkos/Mangu constituency of Plateau state, which he represents.

The lawmaker, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) serving his first term at the House, made his constituents happy when he donated medical facilities to a hospital in Bokkos Local Government Area as well as to  Mangu General Hospital in Mangu Local Government Area.

Hon. Maren said, “My decision to supply these health facilities to these two hospitals is for two basic reasons; first, it is part of my free medical outreach for my people, secondly it is to uplift these hospitals because the last time I came to these hospitals for a free medical outreach I was not impressed with the state of facilities in the hospitals, they were in such deplorable conditions that if left that way they will not be able to deliver quality health care to rural people.

“You remember, during my last medical outreach when we carried out surgery on 148 persons, the facilities at the hospitals were obviously inadequate for a comprehensive medical programme that I intended. And I vowed to myself that before I return here fo another free medical outreach, I must do something about the poor facilities in these hospitals. Today, I’m here with those facilities to equip the hospitals because the health status of people of my constituency is important to me.”

The lawmaker a complete set of metallic sterilisers used for sterilising surgical equipment. Until now, the hospital in Bokkos lacked the equipment, a situation that compelled its management to often take surgical kits to Jos or Pankshin for sterilising.

Other facilities donated were stethoscopes, blood pressure monitoring machines in each wards complementing the only one in the cottage hospital. There were other items donated by the lawmaker, including mattresses.

Hon Maren also kicked off his youth empowerment programme by providing a take-off grant for 150 youths whom he had earlier trained in skill acquisition in Gombe, Ibadan and Ilorin.

The lawmaker said, “The youths are the working class in any society, and for them to be useful to the society, they need to be empowered, hence I sent them for skills training outside the state. But the training alone will not be enough; they need capital to start their business. With the startup fund I’m providing for them today, these youths have become self-employed. This is just the second batch because in 2016 over 300 youths benefited from a similar programme. Another group of youths will soon be sent on training outside the state”

The beneficiaries were trained in bakery, weaving, knitting, juice making, food preservation, fashion design, tailoring and hairdressing, among others.

Senator Jonah David Jang, who witnessed the event, urged Governor Simon Lalong to look into his administration’s handover notes, which he said, contained the list of all equipment needed for all upgrades and renovation of general and cottage hospitals in the state.

Senator Jang said, “This is not an issue of politics anymore, it is time to look into the pain of our people. I urge Governor Simon Lalong to looked into our handover notes, it has the list of every equipment that is to be procured for all the upgraded and renovated hospitals in the state as time was not by our side to finish these projects.”

The Chief medical surpritendant of Bokkos Cottage hospital, Dr. Geoffrey Kumven represented by Metron Kemza Shendam thanked the lawmaker for the gesture, appealing that the cottage hospital should be connected to the national grid for effective utilization of the donated equipments. The hospital is also in need of functional toilets and power generating sets.

At the Mangu General Hospital, the medical superintendent, Dr. Daplet Ezra thanked the lawmaker for coming to their rescue, adding that he had, at some points, bought some of those equipment out of his own pocket.

FRSC to clampdown on drivers using phones while driving

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Plateau Command, says it will from Monday clampdown on drivers using phones while driving on the highways.

The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Pat Emeordi, who stated this on Saturday while briefing newsmen in Jos, said anyone caught would pay a fine of N4, 000.

Emeordi said that the FRSC Establishment Act 2007, Section 10 (4), prohibits the use of phones while driving for obvious reasons.

“When people drive and make calls or do text messages, it causes distractions and everyone knows that driving requires a 100 per cent concentration.

“But the sad thing is that many people, including those who are supposed to know, are defaulting. We are saying that the act should stop.

“The situation is so bad that the House of Representatives on the 7th of March had to take a cursory look at the situation and everyone is worried,” she said.

According to her, the use of phones while driving has been identified as one of the major causes of road crashes in recent times.

“In the couple of days, therefore, beginning from Monday, we are going out massively to clampdown on those who may default,” she said.

Emeordi also advised road users to always ensure little children were kept at the backseats of cars as a safety measure.

The commander stated that children kept in the front seat of cars face a higher risk than those who use belt at the backseats.

According to her, the command will soon embark on sensitisation visits to schools and hospitals to educate parents on the dangers of keeping children in front seat or not strapping them to their seats.

Only 10 per cent of house owners in Plateau have titles to their lands, Mr Festus Fuanter, Commissioner, Ministry of Lands and Survey, said in Jos on Tuesday.

Fuanter, who spoke during an advocacy visit to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), revealed that only 60,000, out of the 600,000 house owners in the state, had regularised their title deeds.

Urging defaulters to do the needful or risk sanctions, he said that government had made things simpler by discounting the cost of land documents by 50 per cent.

“The gesture is to encourage land owners to get their documents; everyone must take full advantage of it,” he said.

He urged CAN to spread the good news to Church leaders to enable them regularise their title deeds, stressing that the Plateau Geographic Information System (PLAGIS), had made the process cheaper and faster.

Fuanter said that the ministry was exploring all avenues to enlighten the public on the need to process their title documents, and advised landlords to embrace the carrot approach so as to avoid the stick option.

Dr. Soja Bewarang, the Plateau CAN Chairman, commended the commissioner for the advocacy visit and assured him that the message would be passed down to all Churches.

Bewarang assured the Commissioner of CAN’s readiness to partner the ministry in the campaign.

Mr Jacob Pwakim, a member of the community and Executive Director, Youth Initiative Against Violence and Human Rights Abuse, told NAN in Jos on Tuesday that the Plateau Government should urgently intervene to bring succour to the people.

“Jenta Adamu is one of the oldest and largest communities in Jos; it is the largest electoral ward in Jos North Local Government Area of the state.
“But this community has been neglected over the years by successive administrations, who only remember them during electioneering campaigns.
“The road networks in Jenta are in a sorry and deplorable state. People travel for kilometers just to get good drinking water.

“The terrain is also a difficult one, so even when you dig wells, accessing water under the ground remains a serious challenge.

“With good road networks in the community, economic activities in the area will surely be boosted, thereby, increasing revenue generation for the government,’’ he said.

  • Carnival on the plateau

    Carnival on the plateau

In carnival gear Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong leads 52 tribes of the state in a street celebration of peace.

Governor Simon Lalong led the way. His wife Regina followed, as did members of the state legislative assembly, commissioners and over 52 tribes of the state. Plateau State was in a jolly mood. After crisis, peace has returned, and it was worth celebrating, the people said.

For a few years, the state, known for its clement weather, hospitality and tourist sites, lost its peace. Sectarian crises, thought to have been orchestrated by unscrupulous politicians, threatened to tear the state apart. As if that was not enough, cattle breeders and local crop farmers clashed persistently resulting in wanton waste of life and property.

That unsettling atmosphere has since given way, and the people trooped out to reaffirm the peaceful coexistence for which they were known. The carnival brought out all the cultural organisations of the state as well as professionals in the entertainment industry in a very long train of street display.

Governor Lalong also had the company of the Minister of Youth and Sport Solomon Dalung, the state Deputy Governor Sonny Tyoden and the entire cabinet. Local government chiefs and the party leaders were not left either.

It was on Easter Monday, a public holiday, which provided the opportunity for residents to savour the carnival atmosphere in Jos, the state capital.

The over 52 native tribes of Plateau State and other ethnic groups came out to showcase their rich cultures. It was a day residents celebrated the return of peace to the state.

“We are celebrating our peace through this carnival, there is nothing like peace, and we are living in “Home of peace tourism”, Plateau is back again”, some of them said. “We are demonstrating our joy, our peace, our unity, our everything.”

Addressing the jubilant crowd at the Jos Polo Field where the carnival procession terminated, Governor Lalong said, “The days of mourning and burial as a result of crisis or attacks are over. We have to celebrate this hard-earned peace, we shall do this every year because it brings together our people to celebrate and forget our sorrowful past”

The governor also used to opportunity to call on youths to desist from any form of crime and criminality and develop their talents for the betterment of Plateau State and Nigeria.

Lalong said, “I am the happiest governor in the 36 states of the federation today, the days of mourning and burial are over. Plateau State in the history of Nigeria has produced great talented minds, musicians, sport men and women in Nigeria, the likes of 2face, P Square, Ice Prince, MI, Kelvin Pam, sport legends and will continue to do that. Plateau has produced some the great and famous politicians, administrators, the state has produced two winners of Big Brother Africa in the person of Kelvin Pam and Efe. We are celebrating our culture, our human resources, our potentials; indeed, the state has impacted positively on the growth and development of the entire country, we have reason to celebrate,” he said.
